Dodger Order Form

Get out of the sun for the afternoon. This cover protects the cockpit from light rain and sun without the use of bows. Awnings can also help ventilate your boat in an array of weather conditions allowing hatches and companionways to be open and covered from rain or sun. Awnings work well with dodger and bimini’s. Winter Covers

We can build covers for any custom projects. We will work around special rigging or unique designs to bring it all together for the perfectly finished look. Many times the up front cost of a winter cover is substantially high, however if you keep your boat for more than three to five years the cost becomes much lower than shrink wrapping. Also the quality and functionality of the cover is much greater than the standard blue and green polyethylene tarps. Sailor-friendly sailboat dodger designs

I have been a sailor longer than I have been a marine fabricator. In fact, being a sailor is how I got into this business. I often hear from fellow fabricators that the client is not always right, but when it comes to dodger design, it is important to listen to the client’s desires. 

A dodger is an important feature of a sailboat that can greatly enhance the sailing experience. It is an essential component in providing protection from the elements for the companionway and cockpit area. When done correctly, it will complement the overall look of the boat and function well. When done poorly, it can be an eyesore and a nuisance. According to the sailors I spoke with, here are the most important features of a dodger:

  • It provides protection from the weather.
  • It offers a good line of sight.
  • It enables easy companionway access. 
  • It provides airflow. 
  • It does not interfere with sailing.

This article will help you understand how to achieve a great dodger design that your clients will love.

Dodger styles

There are two basic dodger types: a traditional dodger and a California dodger. 

A traditional dodger is fabricated all in one piece that is seamed across the front bow of the frame. It will typically have a front center roll-up window and a more rounded frame. I use a custom 18-inch radius bender to achieve this look. 

A California dodger will have a fabric top with anywhere from two to five removable panels. It will feature a flatter frame and will typically provide better all-around visibility. It very much resembles a small bimini with an enclosure. California dodgers are increasing in popularity; however, traditional dodgers are still commonly found on classic boats.

Determine the right style

Determining the right dodger style for your clients depends on a variety of factors. Asking the following questions can help you assess the pros and cons of both dodger styles and guide your clients to the right decision.

How do the clients use their boat? For example, clients who use the boat for both cruising and racing may want to fold down and/or remove the dodger during races. A traditional dodger can be designed to fold down, although folding clear vinyl repeatedly will damage it well before the end of its life. In this scenario, a California dodger with removable panels might be a better option.

What type of climate are they sailing in? If your client sails in an area with significant temperature changes, having the ability to remove some or all of the panels to increase airflow provides maximum flexibility unlike a traditional dodger with only a single center panel to roll up. 

What is most aesthetically pleasing to both the client and the boat? Classic boats, which typically have a narrower beam, look better with a traditional dodger. Newer boats with wider beams look better with a California dodger, which has a flatter frame. 

How wide is the cabin top? Can your client easily see around the sides? If not, a traditional dodger may impede visibility too much, and a California-style dodger might be the better option. 

Will they be storing the dodger during the off-season? If so, a one-piece traditional dodger might be a lot for some to wrestle on and off the boat. California-style dodgers not only offer easier handling but also store flat.

Design for functionality 

Clearance, clearance, clearance. This cannot be stressed enough. Your clearance design can create a great sailing experience or an unpleasant one. Two very important aspects of sailing are the winches and traveler line.  

Winches are often mounted on the combing in the cockpit or on the cabin top and often have an 8-to-10-inch removable handle. It is very important to ensure a 360-degree rotational clearance for the handle. A second consideration is the clearance between a winch and/or cleats mounted on the combing and dodger wings for entering and exiting the cockpit area. Although not always possible, try to design with ample distance between them to avoid a tripping hazard. In both scenarios, a scalloped wing may be the way to go to provide clearance while still maintaining a good design. 

The traveler line will run from forward of the dodger windshield into the cockpit on each side and, in some cases (not all), may require an upward lift motion of several inches. When it does, clearance can be provided by aligning with the vertical zipper connection of two panels or by creating a vertical slit directly into the clear vinyl. A cleaner installation is running the line through a fairlead on the cabin top and through the dodger windshield using a small circular entry point, such as a large grommet. This avoids the need for a large slit in the windshield.

Height considerations

The last thing you want is for your clients to be hitting their heads every time they get in and out of the companionway or having the dodger frame land at exactly eye level. Most often, I find clients want to see through the dodger rather than over the dodger, which allows them to sail with a connector for additional shade. With taller clients, it can be a challenge to balance this without making the dodger appear boxy or more like a tugboat than a sailboat.

To counter this, consider these design moves:  

Maximize the forward and aft length of the dodger top. The longer this length, the shorter the dodger will appear. It is good practice to extend the aft edge of the dodger a few inches past the aft opening of the companionway, particularly for boats without a connector. It will help prevent rainwater from dripping directly on top of or into the companionway.

Increase the amount of crown. In most cases, for aesthetic reasons, I look to match the crown of the frame with the “crown” of the cabin top. To accommodate a taller dodger, adding more crown allows maximum height in the center while decreasing the height moving toward the sides, which also makes it appear slightly shorter. 

Avoid a boxy or straight up-and-down look. This can be done by increasing the rake of the front windshield and/or decreasing the shoulder width of the frame from the mounting point. When decreasing the shoulder width, be careful to still allow proper clearance for any cabin top winches and handles. You will also need to ensure the dodger will both fit under the boom and have proper clearance for the mainsheet, which often runs close to parallel with the windshield, possibly extending over the top of the dodger. It is very important to have your client set the boom in “sailing position.” Many clients will raise the boom height when in port.

My last piece of advice is to be creative! A dodger is an excellent project for letting your creativity shine. A dodger should look like it was an original part of the boat design and not an add-on. Features like scalloped wings, rounded window corners mimicking the shape of the port windows and details created with stitching and fabrics are all great ways to set your dodger apart from others.

. I consider them a valuable addition to a cruising . The focus of the thread is on HARD Dodgers because they are more uncommon and pose additional cost and consideration ("How will it look?").

A is one of the most highly suggested additions to a cruising . While some and purist day sailors will dismiss or discourage them because they affect the appearance of a boat, I think their practicality is undeniable. Some of my favorite cruising have hard dodgers.


I am no boat expert, and I have not built or bought a Hard , but I do have experience that influences my Point of View.

I know from personal experience while on a long (2,500 miles nonstop) it is nice to have some shelter from the spray that comes from the bow or crosses the . I spent many hours with hard driven cold spray and rain in my face to appreciate that a dodger would make my time at the or on watch much less unpleasant. One night at the , as the spray was stinging my eyes and the rain felt like needles in the face (due to high winds) I wished the boat I was on had a dodger behind which I could shelter while on watch. It was at that moment I decided I really wanted one on my future boat. Harsh experiences or unpleasant hours doing something tend to make that kind of impression.

I intend to add many examples of hard dodgers to this thread as I come across them while researching boats. I have many examples in my files, and as I have time I will add them to this thread so it can become a good "Illustrated Guide" and I hope it will be a good contribution to CF and useful to members now and in the future.

I also encourage any CF Members to participate by adding photos and descriptions of your own Hard Dodgers too. In particular, mention the boat you have it on, whether it was a custom build, or if you bought a kit or fabricated it yourself. Include recommended changes or tips. Include your estimated total cost. Feel free to add your opinions on your own dodger and its success or usefulness and value to you. Please post a of your HARD dodger, if you have one so members can see their style and appearance on your model of boat.

I think a HARD dodger has some advantages over a SOFT dodger. A few I think important are:

1. A HARD dodger can have tempered or laminated GLASS window that are less likely to be scratched and may provide a clear view forward for many years. This means the viewing forward can be clearer, compared to many soft dodgers that use soft vinyl. In addition, I have noticed that most HARD dodgers have more clear viewing area, while many SOFT dodger have large sections of solid , which can block the helmsmans view forward. I consider maximum visibility (clear sighting) to be important and prefer that. Some Soft dodgers use all vinyl or all clear , but they seem rare.

2. The HARD dodger structure can include secure handholds (for leaving the in transition to the side decks), for viewing the above the dodger, and a more protective structure for the crew to shelter behind when facing green over the bow or sides. Some dodgers also include (though they can be added above some soft dodgers too).

Many boats have a soft dodger made of and some clear vinyl. Those are ubiquitous and also useful. The advantage they offer is that the dodger can usually be folded down when not needed. It is also a more "temporary" addition to the boat. Some sailors don't want ANY dodger affecting the appearance of their boats lines.

In short, if I could not afford to add a HARD dodger, I would add a SOFT dodger.

The shortcoming of the SOFT dodger is that it is soft and made of materials that do not last long. The canvas is subject to UV damage and may need to be replaced after a few years. The frames may be damaged over time and may not survive a breaking wave. The soft clear vinyl window panels may become scratched or hazed due to abuse, use, or sun damage or age. Some older SOFT dodgers have clear panels that are difficult to see through due to hazing or discoloration (due to age and UV damage).

I will post a few examples of SOFT dodgers too. Some are unusual and noteworthy.

There can also be a HYBRID dodger that has a HARD top and soft sides. I will post some examples of those too.

"It took me 80hrs. A Trojan 32ft boat with a fly bridge. Used cored flybridge and about 20ft plate midships. It's solid composite with green Solex Laminated windows. And a good attatude to get it right. If you have a 40 Bristol this would fit it. All custom cutty's need to flow with the lines of your boat.

Priced around 8K for labor, 4k materials, 6 hundred for glass, stainless handrails 12 hundred, 13.9K. Not including , lights, ."

I know a few people who have made their own and it's not at all difficult. Make a , using luan, and lay it up. Stainless tubing for supports and you at least have your roof. You can get as extensive and fancy as you like.

or clear dome would be on my own future boat. Seeing one on your Hard Spray Hood/Dodger shows another good location. I like that, as I imagine it serves the purpose of looking at the above, but also without having to expose ones face over the top of the dodger. Cool!

very good airflow in warm .
The only issue I find that is a drawback is the limiting of line of site for close quarters maneuvering, although it's really the loss of visuals below the bow that is problematic not really the presence or height of the dodger. I agree completely about using clear glass for night use.
The combination of and dodger allows me to be a mostly fair sailor even when the weather doesn't co-operate.

A bimini top is an open-front canvas top stretched over a metal frame, or bows for the cockpit or deck of a powerboat or sailboat. Most bimini tops can be collapsed or retracted when not in use and returned to their full extension if shade or shelter is needed. Unlike sailboat dodgers, biminis are found on all different types of sports boats, performance powerboats, pontoon boats and sailboats. Biminis provide shade and protect the helmsman from UV rays but they do not provide full protection from the elements.

The Structure of a Hardtop Dodger

Hardtop Dodger : Our frames and supporting structure are fabricated in 1.25” OD 316 stainless steel tubing. The larger diameter is robust and can withstand higher loads.

Canvas Dodger : Typical construction is with 1” OD tubing. This is a fine size to support the canvas top.

The Surface of a Hardtop Dodger

Hardtop Dodger : The actual hardtop is fabricated with a ¾” foam or balsa core , x-mat fiberglass , epoxy resin and high quality gel coat . It is a 3 inch cambered 90” x 54” x 1” top with a rain lip. Because of these features, The hardtop is very strong, robust and provides a durable surface allowing you to mount solar panels, lighting, sound systems, hand rails and ancillary hardware.

Canvas Dodger : Typically made from durable marine Sunbrella or PVC coated fabric. Canvas dodgers, even when stretched perfectly across their structure, can not accept as much weight as a hardtop.

Side panels and enclosing your Dodger

Both the hardtop and softtop dodgers use canvas constructed side panels. The Hardtop panels tend to be a bit bigger based on the overall size of Hardtops. Panels can be fabricated in either Sunbrella acrylic canvas or PVC Canvas such as Stamoid or Herculite. Window materials vary from polycarbonate, acrylics to clear vinyls. Brands, coatings and thickness vary and can affect both longevity and budget.

Maintenance on a Hardtop Dodger

Hardtop Dodger : The fiberglass hardtop can be easily wiped clean, eliminating possible mold, algae and organic growth. Cleaning the hard top is as straightforward as cleaning the balance of the fiberglass on your boat.

Canvas Dodger : The canvas top is made from fabric, it is susceptible to algae and organic growth and sun damage over it’s life. They must be regularly cleaned in order to minimize degradation of the fabric from the elements.. Often the process of dismantling a dodger to clean the fabric can be a challenging task.

The Abrasion on a Hardtop Dodger

Hardtop Dodger : Because the hardtop surface is precisely molded and rigid, there is no need for a chafe pad to protect from the mainsail canvas rubbing on the top.

Canvas Dodger : Depending on the position of your boom, canvas dodgers often need reinforcement along the top edges to prevent wear and tear where the boom may hit the dodger.

How is the Canvas Works Hardtop Dodger Enclosed?

Stanchions and Support Structure : 1-1/4” 316 stainless steel stanchions and supports provide the foundation of the structure. Two sets of handrails on the outer edge of the dodger are mounted opposing one another. The lower set becomes the strut and stanchion attachment point, while the upper rail is a grab handrail.

Windows and Window Frames : Fitted 40 mil Makrolon polycarbonate is semi-rigid, incredibly optically clear and has an industry leading warranty. Covers for the windows are included with each dodger. Serge Ferrari Stamoid Top or Sunbrella Marine fabric window frames add an attractive, finished look and years of service to any dodger panels.

Hardware : Keder welt and track for forward windows which creates even tension along the leading edge of the windows and provides excellent spray and weather resistance. All hardware is top quality hardware, including snaps, lift-a-dot or twist lock fasteners as required by the installation. Whenever possible it is preferable to use a PVC track, welt and zipper attachment system in-lieu of fasteners.

Traditional vs. California Dodger — What's the Difference?

With so many benefits, it’s easy to see why dodgers are a favorite among sailors. But when it comes to style, there's no one-size-fits-all option. There are actually two styles of this popular canvas piece: traditional and California-style dodgers. Both are great additions to any sailboat, but there are a few differences to consider when choosing the right style for you.

In this blog, we’ll discuss the differences between traditional and California dodgers to help you pick out the style that best fits your boat. We’ll talk about size and shape, the front and side windows, and whether you want a one-piece or multi-piece assembly. Let’s dive in!

Dodger Size & Shape

The first difference to consider is size. Traditional dodgers are generally more compact, both in height and depth, than California dodgers. This style won't shelter the companionway as much because it's not as deep from front to back, but it may be easier to see over. A traditional dodger's compact profile also gives you more space to move around its sides to the front of your boat.

On the other hand, a California dodger tends to be taller and deeper front to back, giving more coverage to the companionway. Because of its height, though, it may not be easy to see over. It might also be tougher to move around the sides to access the front of your boat. Be sure to take size and ease of movement into account when picking your dodger.

Second, take a look at the dodgers' shape. Traditional dodgers typically have rounded corners, giving them a sleek and streamlined appearance. This is because they're sewn as one piece — windows and all. Because they're made of multiple interlocking pieces, California dodgers tend to have squared corners, making them look boxy.

Shape is definitely a cosmetic concern, not a functional one. A sleek dodger will protect you from wind and spray just as well as a boxy dodger. So, it all depends on your preference of how you'd like your dodger to look.

Front & Side Windows

Let's move on to the front window — the equivalent of a car windshield on a boat dodger. Being more compact, a traditional dodger may have a smaller or narrower windshield than a California dodger. This can affect visibility to the front of your boat and the water beyond, so think carefully about how much forward visibility you need from your dodger.

That's not all to think about on a dodger windshield though. Another consideration is airflow. Traditional dodgers are sewn as a single piece and the windows aren't removable. (However, you can modify a traditional dodger pattern to add a roll-up or removable section to the windshield if you want.) Nonremovable windows may be beneficial if you boat in areas that are chilly, windy and/or prone to rain. In that case, you may prefer the solid protection of a single-piece dodger.

On the other hand, the large windshield on a California-style canvas is completely removable from the rest of the dodger. Not only does this allow airflow, but it also gives you the flexibility to decide how much shelter you want from one day to the next. If you boat in areas that are often hot, muggy and/or don't get much rain, you would benefit from the airflow that a removable windshield allows.

Next we'll turn to the side windows. The port and starboard windows on a traditional dodger are much smaller than those found on its California-style counterpart. Traditional side windows take up a quarter to a third of the canvas on the side of the dodger, offering limited side-to-side visibility. They’re also not removable.

Since California dodgers are deeper front to back, their port and starboard windows can be much larger. The majority of a California dodger's side curtains are comprised of vinyl window material with only a border of marine canvas. This extends you much greater side-to-side visibility. California dodger side windows are completely removable from the rest of the assembly.

One-Piece vs. Multi-Piece Assembly

The final difference we'll go over is how many pieces make up each dodger. Traditional dodgers are usually sewn as a single piece with no removable parts. Conversely, California dodgers are comprised of four separate parts: the top, front windshield and two side windows. This difference brings up unique challenges when sewing, installing and storing the dodgers.

Which is easier to work with in these regards is subjective. We'll point out the pros and cons of each to help you decide which is the better fit for your sewing skill level and lifestyle.

You may find it challenging to sew a traditional dodger because it's one piece. That means you have to fit the whole assembly through your sewing machine's throat as you work — and it only gets larger as you add more canvas and window vinyl. The benefit here is that there's only one piece to build on, minimizing the chance that any pieces will get lost.

A California dodger is sewn one piece at a time, so there's less material to fit through the throat of your sewing machine all at once. However, there are more pieces to keep track of when sewing this dodger style, and you have to make sure all the pieces fit together properly as you work.

Next, think about the process of installing the finished dodger on your boat. A single-piece traditional dodger may be quicker and easier for you to install. After all, there's only one piece to tension rather than four separate pieces. On the contrary, you may find that the separate pieces of a California dodger are easier for you to tension one at a time, even though matching up the pieces may take longer.

Finally, there's the important matter of storing your canvas dodger for the off-season.

Because it's all one piece, there's no way to separate the window material from the marine canvas in a traditional dodger. Unless you have a large open space available, you may find it impractical to hang a traditional dodger for winter storage. And since the assembly is curved to fit the dodger frame, storing it flat may not be ideal either. You'll probably have to roll your traditional dodger around a piece of soft fabric for winter storage — but even then, the curved sections of canvas may wrinkle or refuse to lie flat in a roll.

Disassembled California dodgers offer a bit more flexibility for storage. You can roll each piece individually with less wrinkling than a traditional dodger may give you. Hanging the pieces vertically is also an option. Just make sure you have plenty of side-to-side space to keep the panels from touching. Lastly, you could stack the pieces on top of each other (with soft cloth between each panel) for flat storage — but this could take up quite a bit of space and require a large storage area as well.

Wrapping Up

As you can see, both sailboat dodger styles have their merits. Which one you choose depends on your needs, preferences and off-season storage capabilities.

Choose a traditional dodger if:

You don't need or want much coverage over the companionway. You need or want a compact dodger that's easier to see over and move around. A sleek, rounded appearance is important to you. You don't need or want extra visibility through the front of the dodger. You don't need or want a removable front window. You don't need or want much side-to-side visibility under the dodger. You don't need or want removable side windows. You prefer sewing and installing a single-piece dodger. You have the space to hang or roll a single-piece dodger for off-season storage.

Choose a California dodger if:

You need or want more coverage over the companionway. You don't need or want as much space to see over or move around your dodger. A sleek, rounded appearance is not important to you. You need or want extra visibility through the front of the dodger. You need or want a removable front window. You need or want good side-to-side visibility under the dodger. You need or want removable side windows. You prefer sewing and installing a multi-piece dodger. You have the space to hang, roll or stack multiple dodger pieces for off-season storage.

We measure the boat and then bend stainless-steel tubing to the exact specifications necessary to provide a perfect fit. We often install the track on the deck of the boat, further improving strength. Keder tape is installed into the track and zippers are sewn to the Keder, which provides a long lasting waterproof connection.

Custom-Made Hard Top Biminis

I was wondering if there is any information regarding the protocol for replacing canvas with a rigid Bimini/dodger on a small 36-foot catamaran. I could not find a review of solid Bimini replacements. We have strong stainless steel frames. They are fixed with metal struts with no flexible straps. I do want to be able to see the sails from the helm and bulkhead mount. I want to be able to take advantage of roll up clear plastic front and side curtains. Most summers my current set stays in the rolled up position. They have since shrunk enough that they can no longer be fully snapped.

I am looking for some material that is relatively light with strength. Is there any info on the polycarbonate tops such as the Hard to Top system ( www.hardtotop.com )? It seems to be light and strong, translucent. It comes in several panels to make up the necessary width. Is there any other material options that combine light weight and strength? The solid plastic systems seem to be very heavy per square foot.

Because these are semi-custom jobs, we havent done a dedicated review of hard-top Bimini options, but this topic is definitely worth a closer look. Hard tops are so popular among warm-water cruising catamarans that they are standard on most of the boats you see today. Retrofitting one on an older boat, however, deserves some careful thought. Your concern about weight is on target. On a catamaran like yours, the weight of the top and the structure begins to add up quickly-as does cost.

Because the Hard to Top System can be incorporated into an existing Bimini frame, it would appear to be a cost effective option, but wed be concerned about longevity of any plastic, and the translucent nature of the material seems to defeat the purpose of a Bimini, which is to create shade.

A canvas Bimini offers many advantages over a rigid one, especially to offshore sailors. Importantly, you can fold it down or remove it in a gale, when the windage of a permanent hard top can affect the boats trim and balance. And Bimini tops almost always interfere with access to the mainsail. You can usually zip out a panel of a canvas Bimini, or remove it completely as needed.

A hard dodger (as opposed to a Bimini) is less intrusive. Weve seen several custom , lightweight designs with low profiles that provide four-season protection and look terrific. For many boats, a good compromise is a hard dodger top (usually custom made), with canvas sides and clear vinyl front panels. We recently compared three types of popular clear vinyl glazing: Strataglass, OSea , and Regalite (see PS January 2014, How do Different Vinyl Types Compare? ). And this month we look at the long-term results of our canvas test.

To get a better picture of the pros and cons of hard top versus a conventional canvas top, we will begin a survey of various custom shops that offer hard tops and dodgers and compare costs and materials. The more sensible hard Bimini tops that weve seen for catamarans incorporate lightweight cored panels and aircraft-grade anodized aluminum supports. Atlantic Towers in Bayville, New Jersey ( www.atlantictowers.com ) has a number of custom sailboat jobs to its credit. In Southwest Florida, we would recommend JTR Enterprises ( www.jtrmarine.com ), the family-run welding company in Gulfport that rigged the early Endeavours.

Two companies we are familiar with fabricate hard-tops and dodgers using thermoformed ABS plastic: Cruising Hardtops ( www.cruisinghardtops.com ) and Shipshape Canvas ( www.shipshape.canvas.com ). However, as you pointed out, these tops are heavier than comparable designs using cored panels.

Just about any region in the country is home to at least one custom welder/fabricator who can help you come up with design . The aim would be to keep weight minimal without breaking the bank. Wed invite any comments from owners who have retrofitted their boats with hard tops and have advice on this topic.
