My husband and I are the new owners of a Jeanneau 53 that was listed by Ancasta Barcelona. Starting in April 2025, we plan to sail 7 months out of the year in The Mediterranean and work 5 months here in The Netherlands. A hybrid sabbatical for a few years so to say.The boat was owned by Australians who we never met. Not something we’re used to here in The Netherlands. When we put our Dehler 39SQ up for sale last September, we met the interested parties during viewings (at their request) and we took them for short trial sails. We then spend half a day with the buyers when we handed over the boat.In the absence of that personal interaction, Josiane Sader handled all our questions in a swift manner, chasing and securing a quick turn around by the seller in Australia or the shipyard at some point. Her replies were always very professional and explanatory so that nothing got lost in translation in this three-way, remote selling/buying reality. Daily practice for you I’m sure, but a once in a lifetime experience for us most likely (we don’t expect to sell the boat in a few years while living on the other side of the world:).We put our own broker, on copy during the process, especially during the contract phase. Not once did Josiane give us the feeling that we were over-asking or being difficult. Her patient demeanor really made this a smooth process.I also want to take the opportunity to let you know that if it wasn't for Kostas Saltouridis, we would not have bought the boat at all. In my profession I know that good and genuine customer service can make a difference and Kostas definitely over-delivered.With a seller in Australia, we as buyers in The Netherlands and a broker in Barcelona, we started to doubt after the survey if buying that particular vessel was the smart thing to do. With no one on the ground in Greece we felt uncomfortable to try and find the right people remotely to work through the essential jobs that came out of the survey.Kostas noticed that however and stepped in. He offered to use his own expertise and local network of specialists to work through the most important repairs. After consultation with the seller we agreed to a plan and a timeline. By checking in with me daily and by sending through pictures and video's, he kept us informed on the progress. Last week I hopped over to Greece to go over all the jobs done by Kostas and his team. I had no comments so we made the last payment the day I got back.The seller in Australia isn't able to handover the boat to us so Kostas also took the time to explain all the electronics/equipment to me in detail which I video recorded for later "direction for use" references.We are waiting on some final paperwork after which we hope to launch the boat early August ready for new sailing adventures starting next year. We were looking for our next boat and had decided on a three-cabin flybridge. Ancasta Chichester was advertising a 1999 Princess 460 which looked like it could fit the bill, so we made an appointment to view. A long drive from our home in Essex to Chichester Marina to view the boat proved very fruitful, and after a fault-free sea trial and positive survey, we are now the proud owners of that vessel! From the first contact, Sam and Chris at Ancasta Chichester proved themselves to be the ideal intermediaries - well informed, responsive, flexible and friendly. We felt very welcome and supported at all stages of this process, our questions and concerns were addressed quickly, and we feel confident that we have secured a fair deal on an excellent boat. We bought our boat from Ancasta Dartmouth and thank Nick Bishop for his help and patience during the process of arranging surveys and seatrials. Nick kept us regularly updated, liaising with the vendors whom we thank also.The offices and marina itself are a pleasure to visit.

We have recently purchased Dentino II from Sam Peters.  We initially contacted him through the website asking for more details, photos and videos about the boat. Sam was obliging and pleasant to deal with from the start.  There was nothing that seemed too much effort and he always replied to my messages and phone calls, even on weekends and after hours.  The offer did not go to plan but with Sam’s help and smart negotiation, we were able to put another offer forward.  The offer was accepted and we are now proud owners of the boat.  I will be seeing Sam next week to pick up the keys and paperwork before the boat is brought through to Christchurch. I feel in the current times we live in people are always quick to complain, but we feel that this is one situation that praise needs to be given to Sam. After several months of looking and two failed surveys, I have just completed the purchase of my first boat, a Jeanneau Merry Fisher 795. As a newcomer to boating I have to admit my first impression of boat brokers was pretty poor (compared to other industries I deal with) - descriptions were definitely on the optimistic side, boats were untidy, dirty and generally poorly presented. No excuses, just very poor sales and I would be careful who to list my boat with in the future. Then I came across Ancasta (Leo Walters) who shone bright like a beacon. The description of the boat was accurate, minor faults highlighted and extra pictures provided on request. Communications with Ancasta have been excellent, the boat was very well presented for inspection and after sales Ancasta remained interested to ensure my experience was positive. I wouldn't hesitate going to Ancasta for another purchase and if you are thinking of selling a boat, consider using Ancasta, you will get better service and value for money than many other brokers out there. And as a buying customer I would feel confident buying through them so you would be more likely to sell to me!

The wheelhouse also boasts, the galley located along the port side of the wheel house featuring, a Techimpex 2 burner gas hob with oven and grill, double stainless steel sink, and an Isotherm 65Lt Fridge with freezer compartment new in 2022, plus an additional isotherm chest fridge fitted beneath the saloon seating and a 240 volt socket. Directly opposite the galley is the large u-shaped booth seating area with central table, under berth storage and this area also converts to a double berth when required.    Additionally, this Kent 33 is fitted with an Eberspacher diesel cabin heating system, ensuring comfort with vents leading to the owners cabin, guest cabin, heads compartment and wheelhouse saloon. Moving aft through the doors leads to a spacious aft cockpit for a boat of this size, featuring rear seating with under-seat storage, step seating to both port and starboard side, blue cockpit cushions, and access to the two Nanni engines. Latest: No one remembers the mast snapping before 56m superyacht Bayesian sunk, says crew

No one recalls seeing the mast snap on board the 56-metre Perini Navi sailing yacht Bayesian which sunk yesterday (19 August) off the Italian island of Sicily. The eyewitness account of a crewmember on board the vessel, which was obtained by BOAT International , said that the boat was struck by a freak weather event which led to the yacht heeling at around 20 degrees to starboard. As crewmembers were securing items, the heeling angle began to increase rapidly until the yacht started sinking.

The crewmembers who were up on deck were able to evacuate the yacht with minor injuries. The yacht is understood to have sunk in just twelve minutes, and it is believed that a "major ingress" of water from the top down would have caused the sinking, according to a captain who wishes to remain anonymous. This is based on the fact that no breaches have been reported in the yacht's hull, and the fact that the yacht should have been able to remain afloat with two flooded compartments.

The captain of the sistership to the sunken 56-metre Perini Navi sailing yacht Bayesian has said it is "very difficult to understand what could have overwhelmed a vessel of that size" and called the 56-metre Perini Navi series "bulletproof".

David Hutchinson, captain of Rosehearty , said he had taken the yacht around the world multiple times and he had "total faith in the boat".  "We've been to Antarctica and Chile, and we've had her in 70 knots of wind," he says, and the vessel had never put them in a situation that felt unmanageable.

However, Hutchinson noted there were differences between Bayesian and Rosehearty ; notably, Bayesian's  74-metre mast, which would have been heavier and added increased windage. The yacht's layout was also different, with guest accommodation on Bayesian located further forward.

Who's currently missing in the Bayesian disaster?

The yacht's sinking in Italy has resulted in one confirmed death, which is understood to be the chef, and six additional people missing.

The six missing individuals are:

• British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, once dubbed 'Britain's Bill Gates'
• Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah
• Morgan Stanley's chairman, Jonathan Bloomer
• Judy Bloomer, wife of Morgan Stanley chairman
• Chris Morvillo, a lawyer working for London-based law firm Clifford Chance
• Neda Morvillo, an American jewellery designer and Chris' wife

It is understood that the yacht was being used to celebrate Lynch's recent victory in a 13-year £8 billion fraud acquittal.

• At around 5am local time on 19 August, Bayesian was hit by bad weather and sunk.  The sailing yacht was anchored or idle at the time of the incident.

Built in Italy by renowned builder Perini Navi and delivered in 2008, the yacht's naval architecture was developed by Ron Holland Design while the interior design is by Rémi Tessier . She was formerly known as Salute and was last refitted in 2016. She was listed for sale earlier this year, according to BOATPro . The yacht had accommodation for nine guests and 12 crew.

UK Tech Tycoon Lynch Missing After Yacht Sinks Off Sicily Coast

(Bloomberg) -- British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch is among those missing after a luxury yacht was struck by a tornado and sank off the coast of Sicily.

One person has died and six others are missing after the boat named the Bayesian sank early Monday near Porticello, according to the local coast guard and firefighters. Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, was among those rescued, according to a person familiar with the matter, asking not to be identified because they weren’t authorized to speak publicly.   

The couple were aboard the yacht celebrating, following Lynch’s tumultuous acquittal from fraud charges, the person said. Lynch was found not guilty by a San Francisco jury just ten weeks ago, over accusations that he had committed Silicon Valley’s biggest-ever fraud during the $11 billion sale of his company Autonomy Corp. to Hewlett Packard Co. in 2011. 

Separately, Lynch’s co-defendant in the HP case — former Autonomy vice president for finance Stephen Chamberlain — was fatally struck by a car on Saturday while out running, according to his lawyer Gary Lincenberg. 

On Monday, Italy’s coast guard was leading search and rescue operations and had recovered 15 people, said the managers of the 56-meter (184-foot) sailing yacht, Camper & Nicholsons. There were 12 guests and 10 crew on board. 

The missing people were British, American and Canadian, according to a coast guard statement.

Specialized divers have been deployed to search for victims inside the vessel, which sank during a violent storm and is now 50 meters underwater, firefighters said.

“The yacht had been at anchor and not navigating, as far as we know,” a Camper & Nicholsons spokesperson said.

Bacares is registered as the owner of the entity that owns the Bayesian, according to an April filing in a Jersey registry.

Why the Bayesian Sank

Italy is struck by about 100 tornadoes a year, according to AtmosphericG2, a company that provides weather data to traders. On average, just over 70 are “marine spouts,” occurring off the coast, with another 30 onshore.

A woman named Charlotte Golunski saved her one-year-old baby from drowning by holding the child above the waves, according to Italian newspaper La Repubblica. Golunksi is a partner at Invoke Capital — an investment firm founded by Lynch — according to a page on social media platform LinkedIn. 

“I held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning,” the newspaper quotes Golunski saying. “So many were screaming. Fortunately, the lifeboat inflated and 11 of us managed to get on it.”

The UK’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Palermo, Italy, to conduct a preliminary assessment into the foundering of the Bayesian, the MAIB said in a statement. 

“We are providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families following an incident in Sicily,” a spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office said.

Who Is Mike Lynch?

Lynch, who was an adviser to two UK prime ministers, co-founded Autonomy in 1996. The company developed software to extract useful information from unstructured sources including phone calls, emails and video.

Soon after acquiring Autonomy, HP wrote down the value of the business by $8.8 billion and a long-running legal battle followed. Lynch lost a civil trial in London related to the deal in 2022 and was extradited to the US, where he stood trial in a San Francisco federal court. A jury found him not guilty on all counts in early June.

After the Autonomy sale, Lynch set up venture capital firm Invoke Capital, founding a series of tech companies run by former employees. The most successful was Darktrace, a cybersecurity business that uses AI to detect suspicious activity in a company’s IT network.

The body of the vessel’s cook was recovered while divers searched the hull of the Bayesian for passengers, including the tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch.

Deep-sea divers with Italy’s firefighter corps resumed their search on Tuesday for six missing passengers — including a British software mogul and his daughter — of a yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily the previous day.

Twenty-two people were on board the 180-foot British-flagged sailing yacht, the Bayesian, which was anchored near the port of Porticello, when it was hit by what witnesses described as a waterspout, a small tornado on water, during a sudden and violent storm.

Fifteen people who managed to get to a raft were rescued by the captain of a nearby sailing cruise ship. The body of the yacht’s cook, identified by news outlets as Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian Antiguan, was recovered on Monday. But several people are still unaccounted for, according to Salvatore Cocina, an official with Sicily’s civil protection agency.

Those still missing are Mike Lynch, a British technology entrepreneur; his daughter Hannah; Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Christopher J. Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford Chance; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

Mr. Lynch was acquitted of fraud in a U.S. trial in June, ending a high-profile, decadelong legal battle against accusations that he had defrauded Hewlett-Packard when he sold his company, Autonomy, to Hewlett for $11 billion.

Mr. Lynch and the others went missing days after Mr. Lynch’s co-defendant at the fraud trial, Stephen Chamberlain, a former vice president of finance at Autonomy, was fatally struck by a car on Saturday while out for a run, his lawyer, Gary S. Lincenberg, said in a statement.

Prosecutors in the Italian city of Termini Imerese, east of where the yacht sank, are opening a formal investigation into the yacht’s sinking. Reached by telephone, the chief prosecutor declined to comment.

The search for the missing passengers began on Monday but was suspended late that night as crews found themselves limited to the bridge deck and items like furnishings “obstructing passage,” the firefighters’ corps wrote on social media .

When divers resumed the search on Tuesday, ships trawled the waters near the site, the corps said in a statement. The Italian Coast Guard also said in a statement that search operations were “continuing unabated,” with the deployment of helicopters. There was no evidence that gasoline was leaking from the yacht, the Coast Guard said.

The yacht was lying on its right side in about 165 feet of water, meaning that divers, working in pairs, could stay underwater for only about 12 minutes at a time, said Luca Cari, a spokesman for the firefighters’ corps.

Divers were seeking a safe point of access to the vessel’s cabins. “Obviously, everything fell and the space is very tight,” Mr. Cari said, adding that the divers were having to remove obstacles, like furnishings and electrical wiring, that were “completely blocking passages.”

The firefighters’ corps said in a statement that it was impossible to verify whether people were inside the hull.

Mr. Cari said that several divers had been part of the search-and-rescue operations when the Costa Concordia, a cruise liner, capsized off the Tuscan island of Giglio in 2012, killing 32 people. It is considered one of the worst maritime disasters in modern Italian history.

“It’s like the Costa Concordia, but much smaller,” Mr. Cari said in a telephone interview, comparing the search operations. “In the Costa Concordia, we came across many obstacles but we somehow were able to overcome them. Here, the obstacles block the passages and have to be removed.” He added, “This makes it more difficult.”

Crews were also trying to raise the yacht, which experts will examine to try to determine why it sank. Until then, experts can only hypothesize what happened.

Karsten Borner, the captain of a ship, the Sir Robert Baden Powell, which picked up the Bayesian’s 15 survivors, said in an interview that when the wind picked up around 4 a.m. Monday, the Bayesian was about 490 feet behind his vessel. Once the wind wound down, he said, he could not see the yacht anymore.

“My theory was that she was capsized first and then went down over the stern,” Mr. Borner said.

Dario Boote, a ship structures and naval architecture professor at the University of Genoa, said: “Now I imagine that a whole series of lawsuits will be triggered, obviously to ascertain whether there is any responsibility, as always happens very unpleasantly in these situations.” He said, however, that in this case, responsibility might be hard to determine. “Clearly, only once the wreck is raised will we know more,” he added.

Several fishermen told Italian news outlets that they had witnessed a waterspout. Peter Inness, a meteorologist at the University of Reading, said they were relatively common in the Mediterranean, though their occurrence and intensity are unpredictable.

“Until one actually forms, you can’t start telling people where it is,” Mr. Inness said, or “how to get out of the way.”

The inclement weather — with lightning intermittently streaking through the sky — made it hard to know exactly why the yacht sank. Col. Attilio Di Diodato, director of the Italian Air Force’s Center for Aerospace Meteorology and Climatology, said the agency had registered intense lightning activity and strong gusts of wind in the area at the time the boat sank.

The Bayesian had one of the tallest aluminum masts in the world, according to its builder, Perini Navi. “Having a tall aluminum mast would not make it the safest port to be in case of a storm,” said Andrea Ratti, associate professor of nautical design and architecture technology the Politecnico di Milano. The type of intensity unleashed by a violent lightning storm “could have created a significant shock wave,” he added.

He, too, cautioned that “a lot of questions will remain until we have other elements at our disposal.”

Modern yachts are built to withstand meteorological events of reasonable intensity, and all international naval registers suggest that new ships be designed for higher waves and more frequent and extreme weather events.

But “this seems a case of an unreasonable extreme event,” said Emilio Fortunato Campana, an expert in Naval Hydrodynamics at Italy’s National Research Council. “In that case, no ship is 100 percent safe,” he added. “I think the Titanic showed that nothing is unsinkable.”
