Gulf Craft Majesty 120 Review (2021 Edition)

The Majesty 120 superyacht presents an exceptional blend of cabins and deck space, however, it's the unprecedented level of finish that truly distinguishes Gulf Craft's latest offering.

This 37m (121ft) superyacht market features two and three-deck yachts of incredible ability and luxury, but they usually have one thing in common — five cabins. The tri-deck Majesty 120 has six, and they're all good. Add a sensational sun deck and a level of finish previously unseen from this Middle Eastern yard and the 120 looks an important vessel for its builder and the wider market.

Design & Build

Whilst touring this 120 in Cannes, we kept asking the same question. How has Majesty created an excellent six-cabin 37m (121ft) yacht while the competition has stuck with five cabins? 

We found the answer is rather straightforward following some reflection — and after looking at many rival yacht layouts. 

By moving the crew quarters aft, Majesty and Christiano Gatto Design have made room for a forward VIP on the lower deck, adding to the four guest cabins amidships that every boat at this length has. Nearly every other yacht in this class keeps the crew forward, so no VIP.

Shifting the crew quarters might suggest a loss of space at the aft end of the boat, and that assumption would be correct. However, everything falls into place due to the smaller size and relocation of the three-person crew quarters aft, without a beach club encroaching on the LOA. Moreover, the addition of the sixth cabin, the exceptional VIP suite, is just the start of the story.

The tri-deck design of the Majesty is fairly in keeping with this yard’s contemporary fleet, but there is something more impressive at work here, from the powerful bows to the clean, linear upper works. It's a design that really delivers onboard, with a mix of cabins and decks that can’t be beaten on space. The crowning glory of it all is a majestic sun deck that feels like it has been lifted from a 60m (197ft) vessel. 

Finished with a Flourish

The other thing about this 120, is the clear and impressive progression on fit-out and finish. The interior is the best we have seen from a Majesty yet, full of detail, sophistication, and style, while the decks carry a real air of superyacht confidence.

Sitting just under 300GT, the yacht is on a par with many tri-deck rivals on overall dimensions and volume, so the 120’s successes can be put down to making intelligent calls that benefit both the owner and guests.  

Away from the onboard quality, a semi-displacement hull and Caterpillar C32B 2,400hp engines deliver a useful 20 knots. Reducing the revs results in a range of around 1,000nm at 10 knots — fairly low, however, for a yacht of this size with a 24,000 liter (6,300 US gal) fuel capacity.

Interior Accommodation

Because this Majesty is so smart and considered inside, it's easy to look past the design and proportions that enable the yacht to impress. Every part of the interior is spacious and functional. The salon and owner's stateroom on the main deck, the five cabins below, and the upper lounge above — everything feels beautifully balanced. 

If there is one omission, compared to more recent 35-40m (115-131ft) superyacht designs, there is a lack of inside-outside thinking. The main and upper salons have the usual aft deck doors but there are no side doors or balconies to open things up.

There is the option to replace a lower deck cabin with a lounge — a feature that removes this yacht’s six-cabin USP — but if you only want five cabins it creates some private space for friends and family.

This internal choice reflects a wider enthusiasm by Majesty to work with clients to create highly personalized yachts. Fabrics, finishes, cabinetry, and furniture are all bespoke to the buyer.  

Cabin Craft

Staying below decks, the five-cabin layout has two symmetrical doubles aft, with two twins leading to the all-important VIP. This forward cabin is notable for its excellent floor space in the entranceway, making the cabin feel much more usable. The finish is good, as is the ensuite and walk-in closet that push aft. All the cabins are ensuite with deep sections of hull glass for the four guest cabins. Moreover, the doubles come with dressing tables.

Up on the main deck, the owner’s stateroom is the place to understand the uplift in the finish we are seeing across the Majesty fleet. The cabin feels like it is enjoying a lot of the 120's 8.3m (27ft) beam with plenty of floor space around the berth and big sections of glass to light it all up. There’s a walk-in closet off the entrance and a long sofa below one of the windows but the final furnishings and finish will be left to your tastes. The test boat came with an ivory palette with paneled walls and contrasting, highly lacquered, dark cabinetry.

Back out of the owner’s cabin, the kitchen lies just around to port. Often, guests will congregate in a crewed yacht’s galley — especially if it's as big and social as this one. The kitchen itself is large, lined by storage and worktops, with a dedicated cold storage section. Designed for serious use, the yacht‘s chef will be more than happy, but the neat diner makes the area a space that the whole yacht might well enjoy.

Upper Class

A central, backlit walnut staircase connects the lower, main, and upper decks, and it's the upper deck we'll head to now. A tri-deck yacht’s upper lounge delivers social space in an elevated and private setting that the main salon can’t. Here we have a simple salon and bar area but again the final layout is yours to choose. 

The joy of these smaller (and more convivial) lounges is the view they deliver and how they connect to the upper aft deck. Here, the upper deck doors open onto a covered private dining area with its own barbecue area, creating a mix of lounge, bar, and dining across the deck.

Helm Station

The tri-deck design creates a proper pilothouse on the upper deck, with the captain’s cabin running off it — something that eases the pressure on the crew quarters. The helm station spreads across the wheelhouse, with excellent forward visibility and the space for up to four MFD screens.

Doors to each side mean crew access to the upper deck is easy and guests can join the Captain, with a raised sofa tucked aft.

The upper deck does have an open aft section away from the overhang but it feels like a dedicated dining area. This was another considered move by Majesty because just a few steps away, the sun deck delivers all the sky and lounge space you could desire.

The sun deck is a triumph, as good as anything you will find below 40m, and feels like the kind of terrace that used to be the preserve of 60m yachts. Again, the beam plays its part. The sun deck feels wide and long, with a central bar and lounge finished in rich washed teak beneath an impressive hardtop, inlaid with more teak, stainless steel, and cool lighting. 

At the forward end, a raised spa pool is surrounded by sun pads, to the aft, an open deck can come with all manner of seating, the test boat’s modular, movable pads are a great option. It's the sun deck’s overall size and quality, however, that impresses most, all set safely within tall, stainless steel guardrails.

Decks & Tenders

The other on-deck highlight is the long sweep of the elevated foredeck lounge that will be a popular on-port hangout or an exhilarating spot when underway. This forward section has a dual role — the lounge leading down to a working foredeck with a central crane for launching two PWCs.

The main tender has a garage aft. The PR shots might show a club of sorts with some smart deck furniture but this is a garage first and foremost and that furniture will have to be stowed somewhere else when the tender is stowed. With the tender launched, the garage’s teak deck and neat wet bar create a fun hydraulic waterside terrace with smart steps adding some luxurious ceremony to taking a dip.

Value For Money

Gulf Craft and its Majesty range offer comparatively good value to the superyacht world. Its designs might not always offer the advanced features and finish seen on its rivals but the ability to build large yachts with enticing customization makes Majesty an interesting option. And, of course, if you cruise in the Middle East region, Gulf Craft’s local support network cannot be beaten.

From our experience, when the vast array of extras these yachts demand is added, the pricing tends to get uncomfortably close to the Italian builders that rule this market.

What sets this boat apart from other models is that it can stand up to scrutiny purely on its design and finish, not just relying on being less money than its competition. 

The Majesty 120 is an important yacht, one that boosts Gulf Crafts' constantly improving credentials. It’s important, simply because it's so good. A 37m yacht that delivers superb decks and cabins and comes finished with a new flourish and confidence. The crew quarters are small, but if your cruising is about coastal adventures with as many friends as possible, this is a yacht you need to see.

Things to Consider

First, let’s deal with the wonderful elephant in the room. The Majesty 120 finds itself in the same company as Benetti’s Motopanfilo 37m , a wondrous, elegant, timeless and massively capable yacht that simply cannot be beaten. A tri-deck design with a fun fourth viewing platform and a mini beach club, the Motopanfilo has a captivating interior modelled on a whale’s skeleton with ivory ribs running through the yacht. The owner’s stateroom is magnificent as are the shapely guest cabins. A masterclass that will only improve with age, the Motopanfilo has a range of just under 4,000nm - but it is only five cabins.

Another Italian contender guaranteed to be of interest is the tri-deck Sanlorenzo SD126 . Identical to the Majesty on overall dimensions it enjoys a vast salon and main deck owner’s stateroom, plus a class-leading crew quarters forward. The sundeck isn't quite as big but the two-tier foredeck lounge is excellent. It is a slightly slower yacht with a top speed of around 18 knots but a 3,000nm range adds to the yacht’s superyacht status.

Next, we have two yachts that aren’t tri-decks and also stick at five cabins but both are worth your time. The Westport 125 has a massive interior, with an impressive salon, main deck stateroom and crew quarters. The engine bay is excellent with a dedicated engineering zone and there is space for a mini beach club. A top speed of 25 knots is joined by a range of around 3,000nm.

Back to Italy and the sharp, sleek Custom Line 120 . This yacht has a very similar main and below-deck layout to the Majesty only with its crew quarters forward. There’s no sundeck but there is an excellent flybridge, with a pilothouse tucked just below for longer passages, and a foredeck lounge. A tender garage lies aft for tidy launch and recovery.

Benetti 120

When I think of a classic Benetti motoryacht, what springs to mind is something similar to Gladiatore , a recent delivery from the Italian builder that I was aboard in Miami. Like many recent Benetti yachts , this 120-foot trideck motoryacht features styling by Stefano Righini . She’s modern without being avant-garde and current without resorting to fads. She’s built well and solidly, with first-rate systems and equipment. That’s what makes a classic, but Gladiatore is a classic in another sense of the word too. She springs from the line of semicustom Classic models that began in 1998 with the 115-foot Stella Fiera , Benetti’s first composite yacht.

Benetti has been building ships and boats in Viareggio, Italy, since Lorenzo Benetti founded the yard in 1873. In the early years, the yard specialized in commercial ships, built of wood. When Lorenzo’s sons Emilio and Gino took over in 1914, they began building oceangoing ships and yachts. It wasn’t until 1963 that the yard began to build in steel. It went on to deliver a number of notable yachts, perhaps the best known among them being Nabila . Built for Saudi arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi in 1980, the 281-foot superyacht eventually was acquired by real estate mogul Donald Trump in 1988 and renamed Trump Princess . Later sold to a Saudi prince, she cruises today as Kingdom 5KR .

Benetti was acquired by Paolo Vitelli in 1985 and merged with his production company to form Azimut Benetti. The group now covers every facet of the boating market, from the smallest family cruiser to the largest megayacht, and it does so without the individual divisions stepping on each other’s toes.

Benetti’s continued success was not without its challenges. The old yard on the harbor was bursting at the seams when production of the Classic series gathered steam, and it was clear that something had to be done. In 2000, Azimut Benetti acquired space at Lusben, an idle shipyard at the foot of Via Michele Coppino, just a few hundred feet away from Benetti’s yard. The company refurbished part of it for Azimut, part for Benetti and part for a marina. This provided temporary relief, but as its semicustom composite yacht family continued to grow, so too did its space requirements. Add to that the dual complications of building steel superyachts alongside composite yachts and then delivering them through a channel that was becoming increasingly restrictive as the custom yachts got larger, and it was apparent that something further must be done.

The solution came in 2003 as Benetti took over another idle shipyard a few miles south of Viareggio in Livorno. The yard was rebuilt to Benetti’s standards, and production of the steel custom yachts, many in the 200-foot range, was shifted to the new facility. The Viareggio yard was now fully devoted to the building of Benetti’s semicustom yachts. By this time, the family of composite yachts had grown to include not only the Classic but also the 99-foot Tradition, the 143-foot Vision and, eventually, the 85-foot Legend. Meanwhile, the Classic, after 27 hulls at 115 feet, grew to 120 feet, as represented by Gladiatore , the 14th of the new series. The 90-foot Delfino will soon be joining the family.

My chance to visit Gladiatore in Miami happened as she was en route to her new owners, a young couple from Mexico, moving up from a 98-foot Azimut Leonardo. The semicustom design of their new yacht allowed the couple to contribute their personal talents as a painter and a fashion designer to Gladiatore .

Gladiatore’s natural-toned interior is clearly modern, with no unnecessary frills. Yet it is quite stylish with its straight lines and clean corners. A large sofa on the upper deck skylounge converts to a king bed, transforming the area into another private guest suite with great views. All of the exterior tables can be dropped to create additional sunbathing areas.

With her extra foot of beam, added when the Classic model’s length went from 115 to 120 feet, Gladiatore has lots of interior volume and can sleep up to 14 guests. In addition to the convertible upper-deck suite, there are four staterooms belowdecks, two with twin berths and pullmans, and two with queen berths. The master suite, with a king berth, is forward on the main deck. The extra volume is also evident in the salon and dining room, a single large area that appears even larger thanks to the abundance of windows. The extra length and beam enjoyed by Gladiatore and her sisters enhance their spaciousness and livability without really changing the basic arrangement.

Both Azimut and Benetti build yachts in the 80- to 120-foot range, so you may wonder why the couple who bought Gladiatore opted for a Benetti rather than moving up to a larger Azimut. Quite simply, the boats are very different creatures in a number of ways, sharing fiberglass construction and similar lengths but very little else. Azimut’s models are larger versions of its smaller yachts, while Benetti’s are smaller versions of its larger yachts. They have different designs and intended uses, different outfitting and equipment, and different navigational capabilities. In the end, it comes down to the owners’ determination as to which type of craft will most closely suit their personal lifestyles and cruising plans.

Once those questions are answered and a decision is reached, the remaining choice is custom or semicustom. These smaller semicustom Benetti yachts benefit from a much shorter build period with few structural or machinery changes from boat to boat. This means the company is able to offer quicker delivery at a reduced cost, while still providing owners an opportunity to customize the interior. Gladiatore reveals these differences and advantages, as well as what some might consider a disadvantage. Unlike Azimuts of similar length, the Benetti 120 Classic is intended for long-range cruising, and therefore has a displacement hull for maximum fuel economy. The downside is a slower top speed, a limitation that long-range cruisers accept. Her maximum speed is 16 knots, but the continuous cruising speed is only a knot less. When you back off the Caterpillar C32 diesels and cruise at 11 knots, her range soars to 3,300 miles.

This 120 Classic is also equipped with Naiad “Stabilization at Anchor” units that operate both at sea and anchored. With active fins that are larger and longer, and that operate for more extended periods, this system is more robust and expensive than traditional at-sea systems. The added benefits, however, are numerous and, in my opinion, worth the cost.

For example, one of the most readily apparent benefits is the reduction in peak rolling angles. This means guests will be more comfortable whether under way or at anchor.

After visiting a number of Benetti Classics in Italy, it was nice to see Gladiatore bringing a little Italian pizzazz to this side of the Atlantic. She looked as comfortable here as her sisters do in the Mediterranean. But that’s because she’s a Classic.

Aqueous 120 Meter Superyacht Concept

Aqueous 120 is the mega yacht concept that measures an impressive 120-metres in length and was created to merge generous dimensions with a fresh and striking profile

Aqueous 120 is the latest mega yacht concept created by yacht product studio  Facheris Design . The yacht concept generously uses glass in its design, featuring prominently throughout the superstructure and hull, maximizing the amount of natural light permeating each cabin, as well as the salon and entertainment spaces.

At 394 feet (120 meters) of length, the Aqueous 120 provides abundant opportunity. Her ample 400square metre aft deck features a huge infinity pool, a retractable awning, which covers a section of the aft deck, as well as a double lounge seat and bar. Two large garages are designed to house two 11-metre limo tenders, a jet ski and additional water toys and equipment. The sunpad toward the bow can convert into a helipad. Such an enormous vessel as the Aqueous 120 will need 42 crew members to take care of onboard operations. The guests will be accommodated in four VIP, eight double, and six single cabins.

The Aqueous 120m will be powered by an environmentally responsible hybrid propulsion system, which will result in fewer emissions. Facheris Design’s calculations estimate that quadruple 4,290-hp MTU 20V 4000 M73L engines as part of the hybrid system should permit a top speed of 20 knots, too. Add a fuel capacity of 71,591 gallons (271,000 liters), and the Aqueous 120 would be capable of reaching many a destination.

120-Square Metre

In 1907, the Swedish Sailing Federation established a committee to design a national racing yacht class. Previous handicap rules had tended to be very simple and boats had evolved to be very fast and extreme racing machines, which were perceived as unsafe and impractical. Recently developed other options were the Universal rule (also called ‘American rule’) and the International Metre rule, neither of which were seen as fully satisfactory by the Swedish Sailing Federation.

The committee completed its proposal the following year. It was accepted as the first Square Metre Rule: yachts were to be classed by their sail area which was fixed. In addition, there were minimum requirements for weight and cabin measurements. Four new classes were originally accepted: 22m² , 30m² , 45m² and 55m² classes. Soon, new classes were to follow: 38m² class in 1912; 15m² , 75m² , 95m² , 120m² and 150m² classes in 1913; finally in 1915, 38m² and 45m² classes were combined to new 40m² class. The new rule became very popular within the Baltic region; between 1907 and 1920, Finnish yards alone built some 600 Square metre rule yachts. During peak years, Skerry cruisers made up 95 percent of the yards’ output.  They were also exported to other European countries and the USA.
