joy feadship yacht underway

Joy: On board Feadship’s 70m superyacht with a basketball court and disco

The owner's first yacht,   Joy is a 70 metre Feadship , but this is one owner for whom size is not everything.

The bigger the saloon, the less it gets used. Despite this being one of the few generally accepted rules of superyacht design, boats are still pouring out of sheds with wide-open acreage on their main and upper decks. Designers earn their money making these spaces feel as comfortable as possible, but there’s often no hiding the fact that they’re just really big rooms. And who feels comfortable putting their feet up in one of those?

Clearly not the owner of 70 metre Joy , who has pulled off something of a magic trick with this, his very first yacht: he’s made it feel cosy. “I did not want some floating villa with vast internal spaces compromising the relationship with the ocean and the interior,” he says.

“We did not need to be compromised by some preset platform or convention. We designed Joy with our own lifestyle and vision in mind.” To achieve this, volume has been turned right down. Joy carries fewer gross tonnes (around 1,100) than any other 70 metre motor yacht on the water.

Even Heesen ’s low-slung and sporty Galactica Super Nova is packing a bigger interior. Benetti ’s stacked 70 metre Freedom , by comparison, has almost twice the internal volume, at 1,975GT. “I wanted a yacht that was progressive and not afraid of challenging convention,” Joy ’s owner adds, consigning the superyachting mantra of “more and bigger” to the dustbin.

Actually, that’s not quite true of the whole boat. By keeping the interior human-sized, the decks have been exaggerated. You can comfortably walk two abreast down Joy ’s ample side decks, protected the entire time by the high bulwarks and deck overhang above.

The owner’s deck, meanwhile, should really be known as the “promenade deck”. You can stroll hand in hand around the entire superstructure, all on one level. You could even jog in tandem. Feadship claims there’s more teak on Joy than any other comparable superyacht. I can believe it — it just keeps going, ending up on the owner’s deck in a basketball and badminton court all the way forward.

Joy wasn’t always going to have such expansive outside spaces; she grew from 50 metres to 63 metres and finally to 70 metres. Simon Rowell, creative director at Bannenberg & Rowell , which designed her exterior and layout, says: “Once Joy was mapped out and engineered [at 63 metres], the owner asked us to study a longer prow, in essence for two simple reasons: he felt that a longer external foredeck visually gave more breathing space between hull and superstructure and leant the yacht an elegant stance on the water; secondly, he would benefit from a very large terrace forward of his suite, effectively extending his family deck significantly.”

It was a savvy move from the young owner, whose defiance of yachting norms extended to his choice of collaborators in the creation of his boat. Joy is the first exterior design by Bannenberg & Rowell to hit the water, while for the interior he turned to London-based Studio Indigo , which had designed boats before but never on the scale of Joy .

The company is led by Mike Fisher, who said he was asked to create an interior that was “unique and non-boat like”. He continues: “The client and his wife are young, energetic and visionary. They look to the future and rarely to the past. They hoped the design of Joy would create a real sense of contentment and comfort, without making the boat feel like every other yacht and avoiding the clichéd details that would date in years to come.”

The approach has led to an interior that’s not easy to pigeonhole, but which Fisher describes as “vintage, without being overtly fashionable”.  Equally outside-the-box is Joy ’s superstructure, which looks as if it was carved.

“We wanted to connect with the surroundings, to garner the best views,” says James Carley, director of exterior design at Bannenberg & Rowell. “Chamfering the edges [of the superstructure overhangs] effectively raises the external deckheads, both around the side walkways and the overhanging aft decks.” This drive to provide a generous outlook from every internal space led to some “ongoing but friendly” battles with Feadship, says Rowell, who with Carley pushed to make sills and coamings on Joy as minimal as possible, to allow the maximum possible glazing.

The best example of this is to the rear of the bridge deck, where the entire space has been given over to Joy’s glass-walled superyacht gym , kitted out with the latest Technogym equipment. It’s a hybrid space — both inside and outside — and was an important requirement for the owner, who says enthusiastically: “The gym on the bridge deck may be the best place to work out anywhere in the world!”

Carley adds that he would have removed the entire structure from this area if he could, but the exhaust casings were non-negotiable. Still, Joy ’s gym is an incredibly bright and inviting space, one that is actually quite hard to walk through without an urge to better yourself — a benefit of placing a wellness area like this in an unavoidable part of a yacht, rather than squirrelling it away on a lower deck.

Double stairs forward sweep up to the superyacht sundeck and its pool, which together create an exclusive perch at the top of Joy . The gym’s blurring of what is exterior and interior extends across the main and upper decks, which both have winter gardens that can be closed off with glass to take them from outside to inside with a nod to a deckhand.

The challenge for Studio Indigo was managing this interface, to make sure there’s no jarring as you enter the yacht proper. “We used a great many finishes and textiles as well as materials and styling of furniture to make the exteriors feel like an extension of the interior spaces,” says Fisher. “Moreover, each living area has windows looking out on to the wide walkways — making the rooms feel much larger than they are.”

Then there are the carpets in Joy ’s upper and main saloons that demand you walk barefoot, drawing you into the comfortable interior. The main saloon’s is silk and nettle and made by German firm Jan Kath, represented by Front Rugs. The seating in here is low and comfortable, while an Irish whiskey bar to starboard, made in the UK by Silverlining, keeps things social.

The only other saloon on Joy , on the upper deck, couldn’t feel more different. This is very deliberately a family space. “There were certain vital principles that we were determined to achieve to make the yacht work and flow with different groups and situations,” the owner says. “There are elements such as the owner’s deck, which is almost a penthouse so I can be alone with my family.” Joy ’s layout reflects this, with a master suite forward and a pair of double cabins amidships for the two children the only accommodation on this level.

Studio Indigo used more than 250 finishes throughout Joy — “too many to mention!” jokes Fisher. “We gave each area its own unique and highly individual character by using diverse materials and patterns. We didn’t just want to give each cabin a theme, we wanted to make each one an experience — a memorable space full of colour and texture.”

The design for each room started with a single item, playing on the owner’s love of tactile materials. A Yastik cushion, for instance, was the initial building block for the owner’s and VIP cabins on Joy . Hand-woven ikat fabric from Indonesia and Suzani textiles from central Asia informed other areas. “These materials tell their own stories using colour, weave and pattern. The story of these cushions seemed to fit perfectly with the client’s vision and the feel of what we were all aiming to achieve,” adds the designer.

His proudest achievement on Joy is the central cantilevered superyacht staircase , which winds up from the lower deck around a lift shaft. You ascend on hand-woven carpeted pads past windows, beautiful églomisé panels made by DKT Artworks and oak marquetry.

You emerge at Joy ’s bridge deck, which, apart from the gym, has an office that is treated to its own fold-down superyacht balcony , mirroring one on the starboard side. No hydraulics or electrics are used — “they have been developed to be operated manually, by simply pushing down”, says Carley.

Electrics and hydraulics are required, however, for the other openings on board Joy . Two sections of bulwark fold down pantograph-style, forward on the main deck, to release the tenders stored there. And the large transom door levers up, to create a shade for the bathing platform and to open up the superyacht beach club .

The other access to the beach club is via a set of bomb bay doors on the main deck. They reveal a cinema space, with beanbag chairs and a huge video wall made by VBH, which can be used to screen movies or play computer games. And in the teak floor — the owner’s star sign displayed in LEDs.

It’s Rowell’s favourite part of Joy . “The combination of bomb bay doors and pivoting transom door is very successful. The visual connection between decks, particularly when one considers having parents on the main deck and kids on the swim platform, really proved worthwhile. The geometry and engineering of these features is not easy, but the relatively compact lower deck beach club ‘den’ is immeasurably improved by this interaction.”

Feadship has kept everything squeak-free, as you’d expect. It’s a testament to Joy ’s build quality, too, that while underway, even with all that glass and those huge overhangs — features that terrify engineers tasked with keeping a yacht quiet — there is not a rattle to be heard.

In fact, the ship is almost eerily silent when running, even when weaving figures of eight in two metre seas for the photographer in the helicopter hovering above. “She is my first Feadship,” says the captain after the shoot. “I have been impressed with the overall build standard and attention to detail. Joy is very stable and quiet as a mouse underway.”

To stay out of the images, everyone on board is asked to hide away in Joy ’s main saloon. I sink into the sofa scattered with Holland & Sherry cushions to wait it out, as the skipper swings us left and right. It’s only a few seconds before I’m forcing down the urge to put my feet up on the custom coffee table. But the fact that I want to — feel irresistibly compelled to — tells you everything you need to know about Joy .

Joy is managed by Burgess with charters starting from €700,000 per week .

The Incredible Features Of Michael Jordan's $80 Million Superyacht

michael jordan with sunglasses

Basketball superstar Michael Jordan's love of the sea is well-documented, so it's no surprise that he is the owner of an $80 million superyacht named Joy. This 230-foot luxury vessel is modern, spacious, and comes with a full-length basketball court which is an extra touch befitting of a basketball legend like Jordan. This high-end yacht has not been his only maritime purchase in past years. As an avid sports fisherman who has competed in various sports fishing tournaments, he also owns an $8 million fishing yacht dubbed Catch 23 (via CBS ).

Joy was built by the Dutch ship construction company Feadship, which also was responsible for building a superyacht for the late Steve Jobs (via AutoEvolution ). It is powered by twin 1,850-horsepower engines and has an average cruising speed of 12 knots and a maximum speed of 16 knots. The former king of basketball was last seen cruising on Joy in 2019 while on a sailing trip to St. Barts with friends (via The U.S. Sun ).

Joy's interior is sleek and modern

modern super yacht on water

This award-winning luxury boat oozes elegance from all corners. Photos published online show that its design emphasizes natural light and uses glass paneling and large windows all over the ship to achieve this. As a result, guests can enjoy the sublime ocean view from nearly every room on the yacht.

This luxury yacht is enormous and consists of five decks that are connected by a glass elevator and a timber spiral staircase. There are seven cabins on board, including the master's suite featuring a 270-degree view and a private terrace. There is also a VIP stateroom, four double cabins, and one twin cabin to accommodate guests. In total, it accommodates up to 12 guests and 19 crew members.

For someone as enterprising as Michael Jordan ( Forbes has estimated his net worth to be $1.7 billion), this vessel has everything a billionaire businessman needs to kick back and relax. It comes with its own bar and a jacuzzi on its main deck. There is also a fully-equipped gym and a full-length basketball court whenever he is ready to take on anyone who wants to challenge him for a pick-up ball game.

By Editorial Team | 21st Oct 2016

Sleek and unique, the 70m/230ft motor yacht JOY inspired an incredible wave of intrigue following her delivery from Feadship.

Embodying the youthful lifestyle of her Owner and redefining current notions of style, superyacht JOY possesses the kind of distinction from which classics are created. Enjoying detailed discussions with the designers behind the yacht, YachtCharterFleet can exclusively reveal the innovative touches that make up this modern masterpiece.

Constructed in Holland by the esteemed Dutch shipyard, superyacht JOY  is the first ever build to boast exterior styling from Bannenberg & Rowell , one of the yachting world's most famous names which has, until now, devoted all its attention to the interior of superyachts.

Sure to lay the foundations of a reputation to rival that of their celebrated interiors, JOY’s exterior is truly cutting-edge, gifting the superyacht with a remarkably distinctive profile.

In a similar vein, Studio Indigo - the design house behind the Feadship's interior - was chosen to bring its design expertise to bear on the world of superyachts. Using their keen awareness of the Owner's tastes and preferences, the team ultimately shaped the interior design of JOY to heighten the overall experience of being on board.

JOY photo 25

Responding to the Owner’s desire to harmonise the exterior and interior spaces, the designers developed pioneering ‘winter gardens’ on the main and Owner’s deck. Allowing guests to alternate between larger indoor and outdoor areas, the winter gardens are formed by optional glass panelling which instantly transforms open deck space to air-conditioned zones which still enjoy plenty of light and access to views.

Consistent with this approach to flexible luxury living, a semi-open air gymnasium was also installed on the bridge deck to enahnce the experience of working out.

Making all these features even more attractive, of course, was the recent news that JOY will be available to charter, allowing parties of 12 to enjoy the sophistication of this contemporary superyacht for themselves.

yacht called joy

Due to the relatively low volume of JOY (1,100GT, to be exact), Bannenberg & Rowell devised a progressive styling which would optimise the feeling of being at sea whilst forming a seamless transition between the indoor and outdoor spaces.

As stylish as they are functional, the angular surface shapes and sculptured sections which grace the exterior of the yacht ultimately allow a great deal of natural light to pass through. This, along with the large windows which encase the living spaces mean that those on board are forever at one with their surroundings.

James Carley, the director of exterior design at Bannenberg & Rowell explained this approach, describing how: ‘the design was very much governed by the desire to minimise anything which would get in the line of sight, and to ultimately maximise the deck space’.

Rivalling the quality of their celebrated interiors, the cutting-edge exterior Bannenberg & Rowell has developed is sure to lay the foundations of a similarly enviable reputation

JOY photo 23

Bomber Doors

Encountering a flourish of innovation immediately upon stepping foot on board via the main deck aft, guests are sure to be impressed by the sofa which opens up to provide access to a staircase leading to the beach club on the lower deck.

Like the hatch of a bomber jet, the upward hinging doors have the added advantage of forming further seating arrangements to both port and starboard.

What’s more, when the doors are brought down, the space becomes an impressive outdoor lounge with a retractable screen attached to the ceiling ready to serve up endless hours of nighttime entertainment.

The creativity behind such a multi-functional space is impossible to overstate, and demonstrates the incredible synergy that has been the driving force behind JOY.

JOY photo 1

Wintergarden

Moving forward, charterers reach a set of sliding glass doors which open up onto a spacious dining area encased by glass panelling.

Referred to as the ‘Wintergarden’, this space playfully disrupts the traditional limitations of exterior and interior design, creating an entirely new environment for guests to enjoy.

As Mike Fisher, creative director of Studio Indigo, is keen to point out, ‘air conditioned outdoor-in zones are part and parcel of the fundamental leitmotif of blending exterior and interior spaces on board superyacht JOY’...materials and styling makes the exteriors feel like they are an extension of the interior spaces. Moreover, every living area has windows looking out onto the wide walkways, making the rooms feel much larger than they are'.

JOY photo 11

Entering the main salon, guests get their first taste of the 250 different finishings and materials which Studio Indigo have integrated throughout JOY.

Remaining faithful to the layout designed by Bannenberg & Rowell - as well as their aesthetic sensibilities - the interior designers have clearly been attentive to the comfort and ambience of the spacious communal area.

Exuding an understated elegance, the terracotta carpeting is accented by lightly toned fixtures and deeply hued furnishings. Flanked by floor-to-ceiling windows, the space enjoys an abundance of natural light and allows guests to take in the same views on offer outside.

As the social centre of superyacht JOY, a classically styled bar is situated on the starboard side to serve cocktails with more than a touch of glamour.

Appropriately, the artwork remains wholly unobtrusive, with only a single impressionist painting adorning the forward wall. Although vibrant, the painting enhances rather than distracts from the cohesive textures which surround it.

Ultimately, the main salon is something of a colorful interpretation of minimalist design, infusing an impressive warmth into the spatially sensitive approach.

JOY photo 12

Heading towards the VIP cabin and two double staterooms, which occupy the forward section of the main deck, charterers will find themselves passing the circular glass elevator located amidships on the starboard side.

With an expertly crafted, cantilevered, timber staircase spiralling around its shaft, the elevator is nicely consistent with the overall feel of the yacht whilst being completely functional.

Connecting all decks with the exception of the lower deck, the elevator unquestionably heightens the experience of reaching both the owner’s deck and bridge deck.

JOY photo 13

Keen to create a link between the interior and exterior, each of the two double cabins found on the main deck are fitted with large windows and expertly selected soft furnishings.

Providing an individuality through their distinct use of colour, these guest spaces feel huge thanks to artfully installed reflective surfaces.

The VIP cabin, which is found just forward of the two doubles, would assuredly give the master suites of many large superyachts a run for their money. Indeed, with a broad dressing area and similarly large bathroom, a soothing sense of tranquility runs throughout the cabin.

A total haven, sofa seating has been added at the foot of the bed to allow guests the option of relaxing in privacy. Furthermore, a desk has been included to starboard side, ensuring any necessary business tasks which need attending to can be conducted in the utmost comfort.

Forming something of a mirror image to port and starboard on the lower deck, the ‘child’s cabin’ and ‘nanny cabin’ of superyacht JOY are beautifully coloured, with

Congruous with the design of the communal spaces, the minimal configuration of furnishings and fixtures optimises these guest areas to create a truly harmonious setting which would be appropriate for additional guests as well as for its intended purpose.

Flexible and superbly styled, the accommodation available on board superyacht JOY is certain to satisfy the modern charterer

JOY photo 14

Reminiscent of a contemporary penthouse, the Owner’s deck is comprised of a stateroom, two children’s VIP suites, and a large lounge towards the aft. Uniquely styled, this layout is completed by light woods, modern decorative touches, and cream coloured furnishings.

Serving as a hangout room, the owner’s lounge includes a state-of-the-art television amidst sofa seating and bronze detailing. Once again, the area feels incredibly voluminous and is sure to be popular amongst charterers.

The Owner's stateroom itself is surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows with an overhead skylight to illuminate the space by day. Thanks to the clean design of the foredeck, the wraparound windows provide unobstructed views making it possible to take in ocean panoramas from the large bed.

JOY photo 30

With dedicated his and hers bathrooms along with attendant dressing rooms, the accommodation on this deck is effortlessly modern, with the proximity to the children’s suites being an obvious advantage for families away on a charter vacation .

Indeed, it’s difficult to imagine a configuration which would be more family-friendly and offer an environment as exceptionally equipped as that of JOY.

JOY photo 15

No doubt the greatest talking point of superyacht JOY’s exterior, however, is the basketball hoop which can be erected at the bow.

With a collection of nets easily attached to the sides, this feature is sure to capture the imagination of guests of all ages. Termed a ‘Games Deck’, the area can also be effectively configured for badminton and football.

With alfresco dining options also available on the terrace immediately forward of the master suite, guests can decide whether to enjoy a coffee sat over at the port side or dine at the more formal arrangement on the starboard side.

JOY photo 17

Thanks to the walk-around exterior configuration, charterers occupying this deck are able to reach the various outdoor areas with no difficulty whatsoever, going from the second ‘Wintergarden’ located towards the aft to the bow with a gentle ease.

Making the experience of chartering the yacht that bit more special, this means that charterers staying on the Owner’s deck can choose to dine socially or privately as well as indoors or outdoors. This being said, the space is large enough to accommodate the entire party and could equally be used as an alternative alfresco dining option.

JOY photo 26

In many ways a natural extension of the owner’s deck, the bridge deck includes a sizeable office as well as the wheelhouse and semi open-air gymnasium.

A sofa situated immediately behind the captain’s chair is a nice addition to the wheelhouse as it allows guests to gather together whilst plotting the course of their cruising as well as enjoying spectacular views from on high.

Fitted with a wide variety of exercise equipment, and suitably spacious, the gymnasium allows charterers to continue their fitness regime, no matter how demanding it may be. Indeed, the oceanic views on offer are sure to make working out - excuse the pun - a complete joy.

Located beneath the sundeck, the gymnasium also offers impressive views of the Jacuzzi above in a feat of architecture that has unsurprisingly garnered a significant amount of praise.

Leaving the gym to reach the staircase on the aft, charterers will find sofa seating which fringes the deck space, offering an excellent space to unwind and look out over the ocean.

JOY photo 20

Sure to be the preferred communal outdoor space, the sundeck of superyacht JOY is graced with forward facing sunpads, a wide jacuzzi, and a selection of extra furnishings for light dining.

Thanks to an attachable bimini, the deck can be transformed from a sun-drenched paradise to a chillout zone in a matter of minutes.

Anticipating the long stretches of time sure to be spent on the sundeck, a bar has been installed on the port side whilst the space to starboard has been put to good use with a full grill.

A true all-rounder, superyacht JOY offers the very best to her guests whether they be indoors or out

JOY photo 22

The Beach Club

Heading inside via the swim platform, charterers will find themselves in the highly innovative and thoughtfully arranged beach club.

With video walls surrounded by a collection of bean bags, the area is entirely child-friendly, with the option of hooking up games consoles to keep everyone amused for hours on end.

Elsewhere on the lower deck, a sophisticated treatment room provides a range of wellness options. Specifically, there’s a large shower, which doubles up as a steam room, whilst the electronically operated massage bed can be used to carry out a number of spa therapies.

JOY photo 21

To cool off, it doesn’t get much better than heading down to the swim platform, which extends off the aft deck, either to board the toys and tenders or recline in the shade formed by the raised transom door. Indeed, by swiveling open, the transom door forms a generous canopy to expand the possibilities of this waterside space.

Reached via broad staircases on the port and starboard sides, the length of the swim platform also ensures that families and parties are able to gather together with adequate room by the water.

Along with her impressive collection of towable toys, JOY also comes with all of the diving and scuba gear necessary to explore her charter grounds.

JOY photo 27

Besides being eye-catching and satisfying her Owner’s desire to be distinctive, superyacht JOY is forever at one with her surroundings. Such harmony between the yacht and the water is of course owed to the effective collaboration of the teams behind her.

What's more, the superyacht sets an exciting precedent for Bannenberg & Rowell, ushering in a new era as they take on exterior design. By anyone’s estimation, it would appear from JOY that they’re well on their way to developing a similar excellence to that of their legendary founder, Jon Bannenberg.

Ultimately, JOY would be entirely suitable for a number of party configurations. Whilst a single family might enjoy her in their own way, it’s just as easy to imagine how two families might divide themselves across the main deck and Owner’s deck depending on the preferences of the principle charterer. Indeed, the flexibility of the decks and guest spaces means there’s the opportunity to finely balance the social with the private.

Joy – Running Heli

Featuring a great wealth of exterior spaces and a contemporary classic interior, the 70-metre Joy is the first superyacht to feature an exterior design by Bannenberg & Rowell and the first Feadship with an interior by the architects at Studio Indigo. The result is an astonishing superyacht which truly meets the owner’s brief to ‘create something totally different to every other yacht.’

All Feadships are, of course, pure custom creations and the vast majority are built for experienced sailors. The Joy project, however, was predicated on a fresh perspective, as the client is completely new to the industry and has never owned a superyacht before. The first of many distinctive aspects to result from this approach is the radical exterior styling, which brought with it a raft of challenges for the yard in terms of construction, fairing and painting.

Michael Jordan’s Yacht: Everything You Want To Know

Ian Fortey

NBA superstar and arguably the greatest basketball player of all time Michael Jordan retired from the game years ago but still keeps busy doing all kinds of things, including sailing on his yacht . This is no toy, either, as his yacht qualifies as a superyacht and you’ll see why shortly.

Before we get too deep into this it’s worth noting that the yacht we’re covering here may not actually even belong to Michael “Air” Jordan. He chartered it several times and there is a rumor that he purchased it in 2019. But we don’t have 100% confirmation on that so it’s possible this is not Jordan’s yacht at all, just one he really likes. That aside, all of the details about the yacht are still accurate and you’ll see why, even if Jordan didn’t buy this one outright, there’s every reason to understand why he would have, and why he’s chartered it in the past.

What Did Michael Jordan Call His Yacht?

Michael Jordan’s superyacht is called Joy and was launched back in 2016. Of course, that’s just one of his yachts as he actually owns a smaller (but still impressive) sport fishing yacht that he named Catch-23. The name is a clever pun on the familiar saying “Catch-22” and also his jersey number 23 from when he played professional basketball. His fishing yacht cost a cool $8 million so you can imagine what the superyacht Joy must have set him back if he really is the owner. Or you can just read on to find out!

How Much Did Michael Jordan’s Yacht Cost?

yacht called joy

Because this yacht is a remarkable, one of a kind vessel, the owner, if it is Jordan, was willing to pay to ensure he got the best of the best. Is it the most expensive yacht in the world? No, not even close. But at $80 million (some sources even say $90 million) it’s definitely no joke. Joy is not a superyacht most people would be able to afford by any means.

How Big is Michael Jordan’s Yacht?

yacht called joy

According to most reports, Michael Jordan’s yacht clocks in at a very impressive 230 feet. That’s nowhere near the largest yacht in the world but it’s incredibly large nonetheless and more than twice the size of Shaquille O’Neal’s yacht or Tom Brady’s yacht .

How Fast is Michal Jordan’s Yacht?

With a pair of 1,850-horsepower engines,  Joy has a cruising speed of 12 knots. At top speed it can reach 16 knots, making it on par with other yachts of this size in terms of speed. At the size it’s clearly not intended for racing or hitting high speeds.

What’s the Interior of Michael Jordan’s Yacht Like?

yacht called joy

What’s the one feature you’d absolutely expect to find on the deck of the yacht owned by a basketball legend? Joy has what has been called a full sized basketball court for playing while cruising, so long as the motion of the ocean doesn’t make this too uneven. Guess you’ll have to be careful with those rebounds. To be fair, though, when you look at images and videos it only shows the one hoop so it really looks more like a half court than a full basketball court. Not that there’s a problem with that, it’s certainly more than most yachts have.

In addition, the space is easily converted if guests are in the mood for different sports and you can play volleyball or badminton. Heck, you can even toss a football around, there’s enough room. If it seems like that might take up too much room, don’t worry. The entire yacht has five decks so there’s plenty of room for the rust of the luxury features someone like Michael Jordan might want included.

yacht called joy

As you’d expect on a luxury yacht of this size there’s a large beach club at the aft of the vessel with a dive platform and everything you’d expect in your beach club area. However, when the sun goes down this space is easily converted into a club for parties and it’s decked out for just such an occasion. There are video walls, bean bag chairs and a number of video game consoles for having a good time. It also serves as a movie theatre for when you want to gather a group and watch a film. Obviously there’s a large dining room for meals as well.

Obviously, the designers included a fully equipped gym on his yacht as well but unlike some, this is a partially open air gym. That means you can take in views of the ocean and enjoy the fresh air during a workout. Of course, additional health amenities exist as well. There’s a spa, a masseuse, and more plus a crew of 19 to make sure it all runs smoothly. One of those crew members is the private chef as well who is said to have a Michelin star, and as you’d expect the food will be able to meet the luxury of the rest of the boat.

yacht called joy

You can travel across the 5 decks either by the spiral staircase or a luxurious glass elevator. This can take you from the gym to quarters where you’ll find seven cabins to accommodate guests. With the VIP you have eight cabins total.

The master suite offers an impressive 270 degree view of the ocean and has a private terrace if you want to go out for a closer look. The owner’s deck is opulent in design and resembles the penthouse of a luxury hotel. It even has his and hers bathrooms so no one needs to fight over who has access to the rain showers. For more private getaways there’s a private office for business meetings and lounge area for dining that are separated from the rest of the vessel.

yacht called joy

You’ll also find four double cabins on board plus one twin cabin and finally a VIP stateroom. In total six time NBA champion has room for 12 guests in addition to the crew. All of the rooms are designed and decorated in a slightly different style so that people who come aboard get a chance to pick a room that appeals to their own personality rather than having a generic room that is the same as everyone else’s.

Elsewhere on board you’ll find a full bar for entertaining as well as a glass-sided deck jacuzzi for relaxing.

Throughout the yacht’s interior you’ll find ocean mosaics, granite finishes and a lot of other opulent decorative touches that give it the sense of being at a resort.

yacht called joy

When it comes to cutting loose and having a good time, the people who designed Joy didn’t skimp there, either. The boat has a number of water toys including jet skis and guests can wake board, water ski, kayak and go scuba diving or snorkeling as well. Several tenders can take you to and from shore or wherever else you may need to go.

If you want to slow it down but still have fun, there are tons of inflatables that can be taken out and even a giant waterslide. If things get out of hand and someone gets in trouble don’t worry, Joy even has a rescue boat.

Is Michael Jordan’s Yacht Kept at a Caribbean Island?

Much of the reason people believe that Jordan owns Joy is because he was spotted there at the Caribbean island of St. Barts with the yacht back in 2019. Most of the pics you will find online that show Jordan on the yacht are from this time period and this is where speculation that he purchased the yacht came from.

The Bottom Line

Joy is a luxury superyacht that costs as much as $80 or even $90 million. There’s a rumor that Michael Jordan is the owner of the yacht, and as the first billionaire athlete it’s not hard to believe, but it’s worth noting you can head to a number of yacht charter sites right now and charter this specific yacht for $700,000 per week. Would Michael Jordan let his private yacht be rented out for charters? You can decide that for yourself. Many other sites on the internet are convinced Jordan owns it but we’re not so sure just yet.

Regardless of who owns it, this massive 230 foot vessel has a basketball court on deck that can be converted for other sports or just whatever activities you feel like. There is a huge selection of water toys, space for parties, room for 12 guests, a jacuzzi, a swimming pool, a cinema and a master suite with an incredible 270 degree view of the ocean.

With a top speed of 16 knots and all the features you’d expect from a luxury hotel provided by a staff of 19, whether or not this is owned by Michael Jordan or just enjoyed by the Bulls legend, it’s easy to see why it’s such a highly prized vessel.

"Joy," Michael Jordan's $80 million yacht, is one of the GOAT's most prized possessions.

Michael Jordan's $80 Million Yacht Is a Luxury Boat Fit for the GOAT

Let's face it: The average joe, or even most above average joes for that matter, isn't going out and buying 200-foot super yachts. Only a select few of the most successful people in this world can afford such a luxury. Take the greatest player in NBA History, Michael Jordan , for example.

There's pretty much no denying it: Michael Jordan is the GOAT. Not only was he an NBA legend who won six NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls, but the five-time MVP also turned his Jordan brand into a super-successful business, making billions of dollars for Nike and opening the door for other athletes to do the same, like LeBron James. As of today, the billionaire owner of the Charlotte Hornets' net worth puts him on the Forbes list year after year.

Now, Jordan is no stranger to boating. A while back, he bought a massive sport fishing Viking Yacht named Catch 23 . It rocked the Air Jordan 3 sneaker elephant print color scheme, and he commonly used it to compete in fishing tournaments. However, one of his more recent purchase puts his old fishing boat to shame. I mean, it is an $80 million luxury yacht after all.

Below, we'll check out what the North Carolina's native pride and Joy (that's the boat's name, by the way) has to offer.

Michael Jordan's Yacht a.k.a. Joy

RELATED: Tom Brady Announces Divorce From Gisele Bündchen, Calling Decision "Painful and Difficult"

Coming in at a massive 230 feet, Joy can be spotted miles and miles away. With eight different full-sized cabins onboard, the yacht can house family, friends, or anyone else worthy of staying in the Master Suite with no problem at all. Inside, you'll also find a full bar with a beautiful dining room area and a 270-degree ocean view. Of course, Jordan has also hired some of the world's finest chefs and bartenders as crew members, to serve himself and the guests while out on the water.

Along with an amazing view, the rear deck is fitted with a jacuzzi and a surrounding lounge area for hanging out or tanning. Jordan isn't the kind of person that likes to just sit around though, so it makes sense that there's also a full gym at his disposal to get the blood pumping. Those five-star meals need to get burned off somehow. Additionally, it wouldn't truly be a yacht owned by basketball player Michael Jordan without a full-sized basketball court. He may not play professionally anymore, but that doesn't mean he can't teach his guests a few lessons on the court from time to time.

When it comes down to it, Jordan is a businessman. Because of that, there's also a room that's mainly dedicated to meetings with important clients. The room is fitted with top of the line audio/visual equipment, and a satellite to give a presentation that is nearly impossible to decline. What better way to pitch your ideas than from this luxurious meeting room?

To put things in perspective, this yacht costs around $840,000 each week in order to man the ship and to keep the vessel in seaworthy condition. Not exactly a small price to pay on top of the $80 million price tag, but for the top-of-the-line amenities, it seems to be worth every penny to Jordan. He truly is living the life, pulling up to the beach club on a Caribbean island, ready to take play some 1-on-1 with anyone willing to take on the GOAT.

Michael Jordan’s Yacht Life. Inside the NBA Great’s Multimillion-Dollar Fleet of Yachts

Michael Jordan is enjoying smooth sailing since agreeing to sell his stake in the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets for a reported $3 billion. The former NBA champ has at least three multimillion-dollar yachts — an $80 million yacht called Joy, another yacht called Mr. Terrible worth $21 million, and one named Catch-23.

yacht called joy

Inside ‘Joy’

Joy measures 230 feet (70 meters) in length. Bannenberg & Rowell Design created Joy, which has a top speed of roughly 16 knots and a cruising speed of about 12 knots.

yacht called joy

The super yacht, launched in 2016 and purchased by Jordan in 2019, has a total of five decks, each built of teak wood. The owner’s pavilion, which gives a 270-degree view of the ocean and features a chic owner’s lounge for enjoying a luxuriant yet private moment, is one of this opulent ship’s key attractions. The master suite is exquisite, and the bedrooms have mosaic skylights that overlook the ocean. Additionally, there is a stunning owner’s office.

The yacht can accommodate a crew of 19 and roughly 12 passengers. The eight lavish cabins, which are almost as opulent as the master suites, are available for guests to stay in. All of the bathrooms include granite finishes and rainfall showers. To provide visitors with the most memorable experience possible, there are spa rooms equipped with an indoor jacuzzi and sauna. A VIP suite and twin rooms are lavishly provided for on the yacht.

yacht called joy

And, of course, it has a gym and an indoor basketball court.

To adapt to shifting weather conditions, the ship is built with an aluminum superstructure and glass aluminum insulation.

Among the trips Jordon has taken on the yacht was with some of his closest friends to the Caribbean island of Saint Barthélemy.

Inside ‘Mr. Terrible’

Although it is four times smaller than Joy, Mr. Terrible is also one of the most luxurious ships now cruising the seas, and by most measures, its overall length of 154 feet is sufficient to deem it a super yacht.

yacht called joy

Mega yachts are essentially private yachts that are 24 meters or larger in length and are so big that a professional crew is necessary to manage them.

Mr. Terrible has an indoor bar, and additionally, there is a space for dining outside as well as a dining area within with a real chandelier. On top of that, Mr. Terrible has a design that was influenced by both Art Deco and tropical themes, as evidenced by the use of tropical wood in its walls and on a staircase made of Bubinga, a tropical African hardwood.

yacht called joy

It is unclear when Jordan purchased Mr. Terrible.

Inside Catch-23

Jordan also owns a fishing yacht called Catch-23; his Chicago Bulls playing number was 23. The yacht cost $8 million .

Viking Yachts produced the Catch 23 luxury motor boat in 2018.

yacht called joy

The sport boat has a top speed of 40 knots and a range of more than 500 nautical miles. This magnificent yacht is outfitted with cutting-edge technology and facilities to provide a pleasant and entertaining experience for everybody aboard. The 80-foot yacht’s interior is built for luxury and comfort, with high-end finishes, comfy furniture, and cutting-edge entertainment systems. The boat can easily accommodate up to eight people and a crew of two. In 2020, Catch 23 was used to compete in the Big Rock Fishing Tournament, where Jordan traveled to Morehead City, North Carolina. Jordan competed in the nonprofit event to raise money for local charities.

Inside M’Brace

It is rumored that Jordan also owns a yacht called M’Brace, which is worth $115 million. According to Majorca Daily Bulletin, the yacht was sold in December 2022, allegedly to the basketball legend. The yacht can accommodate 12 guests and a crew of 24.

Another feature is the tender garage onboard. That has been moved forward in the bow and is semi open as the garage doors are not 100-percent solid. The tenders will eventually be served by overhead trolley cranes. The main tenders are up front to make room for a spacious beach club on the aft lower deck perhaps where the tender garage would have been traditionally. Speaking of the beachclub, that feature will be a hit with guests and owner on board. The transom hatch opens upwards to allow natural light in and access to the large swim platform.

yacht called joy

JOY’ s owner has prime real estate onboard –which is not surprising-. The forward upper deck is where the master suite is and has 270-degree field view. Even the side bulwarks have been 'lowered' in design and the height deficit made up by incorporating glass to preserve the near-seamless views outward from the owners suite. The owners cabin has a large rectangular skylight in the ceiling as well to offer views upward when desired.

yacht called joy

Hull 812 as she was known as under construction up to this point will be launched in a very ‘finished’ state. Exterior wise the 70-meter superyacht looks very complete and even the interior areas that can be seen look largely complete. Based on this, preparation for sea trials should be fairly swift. Once trials have been satisfactorily concluded, JOY will be delivered to her owner. We will have more information here on YF as it comes to hand. 6 Passengers, Including 2 Americans, Missing After 180-Foot Yacht Sinks amid Storm in Sicily

Search operations are underway for six missing passengers after a yacht sank in Sicily on Monday, Aug. 19, while one man had been found dead

yacht called joy

Two Americans are reportedly among the passengers missing after a yacht sank in a storm off the coast of Sicily.

The search for six people continues after a 56-meter (183-ft) yacht carrying 22 sank in the island's Palermo area in the early morning of Monday, Aug. 19, according to reports.

The Italian coastguard said in a statement, per The Guardian , “This morning at about 5 a.m. following a violent storm, a 56-meter yacht called Bayesian flying the British flag sank near Porticello.”

Eyewitnesses reported that the yacht was anchored when it was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and lost its balance, causing it to sink, per Sicilian news agency Ansa .

The body of a man, who has been identified as a cook on the boat from Canada, was recovered near the vessel on Monday morning, local outlet Palermo Today reported.

Two of the missing were later identified by authorities as tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his daughter Hannah , who is believed to be 18.

Two Americans and four British travelers are still among the missing as fire and water rescue teams search to try and locate them, per Ansa, and local news outlet Corriere Della Sera .

Coastguard patrol boats and firefighters rescued 15 people as divers reached 49 ft below the sea surface to the vessel, according to the outlets.

One of those rescued was a 1-year-old English girl named Sophie . She was sent to the Children's Hospital of Palermo, where she was reunited with her mother, who received minor injuries in the incident, per Ansa, The Independent and Corriere Della Sera .

The pair remain in “good condition,” the head of the emergency room of the pediatric hospital, Domenico Cipolla, confirmed to latter outlet.

The father was sent to the Civic Hospital in Palermo, and five others rescued were transported to an emergency point at another hospital, Ansa reported.

Footage posted by Italy's fire-and-rescue service, Vigili del Fuoco, shows rescue teams on Friday morning sailing out to sea in their continued search for passengers, with divers entering the water and helicopters flying overhead in an attempt for more findings of the wreckage.

According to the tracking website Vesselfinder , the 16-year-old yacht departed a port in Milazzo in Sicily on Wednesday, Aug. 14, and was listed as “at anchor” on Sunday. The ship is managed by Camper and Nicholsons International, per the BBC .

Said fisherman Pietro Asciutto, who witnessed the sinking from his home, per Ansa, "I was at home when the tornado hit. I immediately closed all the windows."

"Then I saw the boat, it had only one mast, it was very large. I saw it sink suddenly ... The boat was still floating, then suddenly it disappeared," he added.

The rescue teams theorize the missing people to possibly be trapped inside the hull, making the search for any passengers all the more urgent, Palermo Today reported.

PEOPLE has reached out to the Italian coastguard for further comment.

British tech billionaire Mike Lynch and his daughter are among six people missing after a superyacht sank in a storm off the coast of Sicily - with one person confirmed to have died.

Twenty-two people were on board the vessel, 15 of whom were rescued - including Briton Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter Sofia.

Four other Britons and two Americans remain missing, including Mr Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, according to Italian media. The entrepreneur's wife Angela Bacares was rescued.

Here's what we know about the sinking of the luxury vessel so far.

Seven people missing after British-flagged yacht capsizes in tornado off coast of Italy

What might have caused the sinking?

The British-flagged luxury vessel, named the Bayesian, capsized at around 4.30am local time off Palermo, according to ship-tracking site Marine Traffic.

It sank with 22 people on board - 12 passengers and a crew of 10, according to the Italian coastguard.

Waterspouts, essentially tornados which form over water, were seen as powerful winds battered the area overnight, local media said.

The yacht may have also tipped over more easily with all the doors open due to the hot weather, Sailing Today magazine editor Sam Jefferson has said.

"I imagine all the doors were open because it was hot, so there were enough hatches and doors open that it filled with water very quickly and sank like that," he said.

"The reason it got pinned over so hard was because the mast is huge. It acted almost like a sail. [It] pushed the boat hard over on its side. (The boat) filled with water before it could right."

Official pictures show air conditioning units in several of the rooms, however, which could counter the suggestion open windows caused the vessel to sink faster.

What are waterspouts?

Waterspouts typically occur during thunderstorms and can develop very rapidly, within minutes.

Their spin generally reaches wind speeds between 75-200mph, but can reach as high as 300mph.

They can travel at around 10-20mph typically but can reach greater speeds, making them difficult to avoid - especially in something as slow-moving as a yacht.

Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, called the reports of a tornado or waterspout "rare" and "quite alarming".

"The vessel was at anchor in a recognised anchorage," Mr Schanck said.

"Depending on wind direction and the state of the sea, this informs the captain whether it is a safe area to anchor or not. There was nothing that was too concerning, for my eye. All in all, the captain used the information they had to make a safe call."

Who owns the yacht?

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch is among those missing.

The 59-year-old owner of the yacht is known as the "British Bill Gates" and has been in the headlines in recent months over a high-profile fraud case.

yacht called joy

In June, a US jury cleared him of all charges , which were related to the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard (HP).

HP accused him of deliberately overstating the value of the company before it was acquired by the American tech giant.

Mr Lynch was extradited to the US to face trial in May last year and spent 13 months under house arrest in San Francisco as he awaited trial on 17 charges of conspiracy and wire fraud brought by the US Department of Justice - which were later reduced to 15 charges. He always denied any wrongdoing and was acquitted.

Who was on board when the boat sank?

The vessel had passengers from Britain, America and Canada, the Italian coastguard said.

Most of those on board were British, Italian news outlets have reported, adding that the others were from New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and Ireland.

Charlotte Golunski was among the Britons rescued. Her LinkedIn profile says she is a partner at Mr Lynch's firm Invoke Capital and has worked there since 2012.

Charlotte Golunski

Speaking after the ordeal, Ms Golunski told Italian media that she lost her daughter Sofia for "two seconds" amid the "fury" of the sea but was able to retrieve her. She said she held the infant above the waves until the lifeboat was ready.

"Many people screamed. Luckily the lifeboat inflated and 11 of us were able to get on board," she told ANSA.

The girl's father James Emsley also survived, according to Sicily's civil protection agency.

Also on board were Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of investment bank Morgan Stanley, his wife Judy Bloomer, a top US lawyer Chris Morvillo, who worked on Mr Lynch's criminal case, and his wife Neda Morvillo.

Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan chef who was working on the boat, has been found dead, the Italian Coastguard has confirmed to Sky News.

Eight of those rescued were transferred to local hospitals and all were in stable condition, local media reported.

During rescue efforts, divers saw "corpses through the portholes" of the wreck as they recovered the body of a man at a depth of 50m (164ft), according to Salvo Cocina, the head of the Civil Protection of Sicily.

What do we know about the vessel?

The Bayesian was known for its unusual 72.3m (246ft) single mast - one of the world's tallest made of aluminium - and shared its name with the statistical method Mr Lynch's Autonomy software was based on.

Pic:Danny Wheelz

It was built by Italian company Perini Navi in 2008 and last refitted in 2020.

It was listed for rent for up to €195,000 (£166,000) a week, according to online charter sites.

The luxury vessel, which was managed by yachting company Camper & Nicholsons, can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites.

It won a string of awards for its design, according to online specialist yacht sites.

Mr Schanck said the vessel would have been equipped with "high standard" life-saving appliances and radio communications. He added the yacht would have met all international standards and UK maritime coastguard agency regulations before its voyage.

The boat left the Sicilian port of Milazzo on 14 August and was last tracked east of Palermo on Sunday evening, with a navigation status of "at anchor", according to vessel tracking site VesselFinder.

The Bayesian previously travelled to other parts of Sicily before its last sighting off the coast of the port of Porticello.

On Sunday, the boat was seen off the coast of Cefalu before it travelled towards Porticello, MarineTraffic data shows.

In the days before, the yacht travelled around four of the Aeolian islands, just north of Sicily.

It was previously named Salute, or "health" in Italian, when it flew under a Dutch flag. Its minimalist interior featured light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions on charter sites.

Rep. byron donalds slams kamala harris’ economic platform: ‘joy and vibes isn’t going to put food on the table’.

CHICAGO — A House Republican serving as a surrogate for the Trump campaign slammed Vice President Kamala Harris’ new economic platform in a Tuesday press conference, accusing the presumptive Democratic nominee of blithely ignoring Americans’ concerns about skyrocketing prices with her talk of “joy and vibes.”

“Joy and vibes isn’t going to put food on the table,” Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.) told reporters at the Trump Hotel Chicago at a presser with campaign adviser Brian Hughes. “I don’t know what to tell you.”

Presumptive vice presidential candidate and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz had thanked Harris “for bringing back the joy” after she replaced President Biden in the 2024 race.

Press conference at Trump Hotel Chicago featuring Rep. Byron Donalds and Trump campaign adviser Brian Hughes

The Harris-Walz campaign have since blasted out many press releases touting their ecstatic Democratic ticket, with fawning left-wing lawmakers and credulous media alike repeating the “joy” messaging.

“You could be happy and you could be hungry all at the same time,” Donalds countered, hitting Harris over her plans to federally set prices for grocery stores to avoid “price gouging,” hand out $25,000 to first-time homebuyers and grant up to $6,000 in onetime tax breaks for lower and middle-income families of newborns.

The mounting costs of the proposals — some of which were reminiscent of “Soviet-style” central planning — could add as much as $1.7 trillion to the nation’s deficit and would likely lead to widespread shortages with little to no effect on inflation, economists previously told The Post .

Even with a 28% corporate income tax hike , which the Harris campaign rolled out on Monday, the ballooning $34 trillion national deficit would only be reduced by between $1 trillion and $1.2 trillion, according to non-partisan estimates by the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, the Tax Foundation and the Penn Wharton Budget Model.

“Joy does not provide security,” Donalds said at the press conference in the background of the 2024 Democratic National Convention. “Joy does not provide an economic vision. Joy does not provide peace on the Middle East.”

“Go, take your joy to the mullahs in Iran and see what happens to you,” he dared. “It doesn’t work. What is required in this moment is true leadership. We have that opportunity with Donald Trump.”

Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, Democratic presidential candidate, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, and Democratic vice presidential candidate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz attend the first day of the Democratic National Convention at the United Center on August 19, 2024 in Chicago, Illinois.

Donalds accused the joyous campaign of faking the good fellow feeling since Harris lacked raw political talent.

“Now you have a situation where they’re trying to rebrand Kamala Harris because she’s been one of the more unmarketable figures in national politics,” he said. “This whole joy thing … is the cover up for the fact that their policies are a disaster for the American people.”

The two-term Florida Republican also criticized Harris’ record on crime as both vice president and a former state and local prosecutor, needling the Democratic candidate for supporting “cashless bail” and refusing to back law enforcement over fears of alienating the “defund the police” activist wing of her party.

Republican Presidential nominee, former president Donald J. Trump remarks during a campaign event at Precision Custom Components on August 19, 2024 in York, Pennsylvania.

“In 2017, when she was in the United States Senate, she introduced a bill to incentivize states to move toward cashless bail,” Donalds noted. “Cities in our country that have used cashless bail, like New York City, my former home city, have realized that all it creates is a turnstile for criminals to be arrested and go right back out on the streets. It decreases morale amongst law enforcement.”

Police departments have lost nearly 4.8% of their officers since January 2020, according to data from the Police Executive Research Form , which Donalds also cited.

The Trump surrogate later went after Walz for sitting on his hands while Minneapolis was torched and looted by rioters following the killing of George Floyd in 2020 and refused to call in the National Guard for days — something for which the city’s former Democratic mayor blamed the governor as well.

Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) speaks to reporters on the steps of the U.S. Capitol Building following a vote on July 25, 2024 in Washington, DC. The House of Representatives has opted to start the August recess a week early leaving Congress to pass a stop-gap measure and avoid a shutdown in September.

“He watched the city of Minneapolis burn,” Donalds thundered. “It wasn’t the upper class neighborhoods of Minneapolis, wasn’t the suburbs of Minneapolis that was burning — it was poor areas of Minneapolis, which mostly are inhabited by black people and Hispanic people.”

Harris at the time urged Americans to donate to bail funds that set loose both the vandals and violent criminals — and still supports it — while having distanced herself from other radical proposals to defund law enforcement.

“This is not leadership. This is putting your finger in the air and in figuring out which way the wind is blowing,” Donalds charged. “Joe Biden has done that as President. Kamala Harris has done that as vice president. Tim Walz did that as governor of Minnesota.”
