PAE/MASON SAILBOATS

Beautiful Blue Water Sailing Yachts

The Journey Continues…

Designer Al Mason was chosen as the naval architect of PAE’s first project. Al was the natural choice for several reasons. His designs were famously beautiful, rugged and seaworthy and several boats of his design had been sold by PAE through their brokerage. Furthermore, because Al Mason had worked for John Alden in his earlier years, there was a DNA connection in design, style and beauty to the lovely Malabar VII. The first PAE/Mason design was a 43-foot sailboat. With completed design in hand, the search began for the right Taiwan builder. Through introductions, serendipity and hard work, the young men at PAE learned of Ta Shing Yacht Building. Ta Shing (which means Big New in Chinese) was founded in 1976 and the company was just completing their state of the art factory when the Mason 43 project was introduced to them. The founder, visionary and first president of Ta Shing, Mr. CM Juan, had a simple mission statement: to be the best. No expense was spared on the facility, equipment or staff. But two things were missing; a good design and an American partner. PAE and their Mason 43 project came along at the perfect time. The Mason 43 was an immediate success and was followed by the M63, M53, M53cc and M33. There were 132 “3” series PAE/Mason sailboats produced between 1978 and 1985. Nearly all of these boats are still in service today and have become beloved and respected icons. Between 1984 and 1988, PAE redesigned each of the “3” series Mason designs into the PAE/Mason 34, 44, 54 and 64. These handsome designs used the same hull but had new deck designs and interior layouts. Eighty of these “4” series PAE/Masons were produced. PAE’s last sailboat order, a Mason 44, was taken in 1997 and a few years later, all the Mason sailboat molds were destroyed. But the classic breed lives on. Of the hundreds of Masons sold, most of those are still being used by their faithful owners today. These Mason sailboats are still cruising in all parts of the world, further illustrating the timeless, ocean-crossing durability and class of yachts manufactured by PAE. Mason owners are a tight-knit group and have established their own online community. Full Details

"The Mason 43 was designed by Al Mason. During his career Mason worked with Carl Alberg, John Alden, Philip Rhodes and Sparkman & Stephens, as well as independently. His take on design is generally traditional , with pleasing proportions and gentle sheer lines. According to PAE's Joe Meglen, the 43 is an "evolution of a successful CCA ocean racer named Sitzmark," which in turn evolved from the Nevins Yawl, Finisterre, and farther back, the New York 32...

Ta Shing Yacht Building Co. of Tainan, Taiwan, built the molds and the boats for PAE. During a tour of Taiwan boat builders in 1986 we felt that Ta Shing was doing the best work of any Taiwanese-owned and operated yard in the country (the other superior yard at that time was Ted Hood's Little Harbor facility). Ta Shing also has built the Norseman 447 Skye 54, the Babas, Flying Dutchmans and Pandas and its own Tasbiba and Taswell lines....

The design of the Mason 43, with its long trunk cabin, generous overhangs and full keel, makes no pretenses of modernity. Apt adjectives include traditional, classic, handsome. and according to the ads "timeless.' With its heavy displacement (d/l ratio= 400) and cutter or ketch rig, cruising is clearly its intention." ~ Practical Boat Buying

New Listing – 1995-launched Mason 54

Posted Tuesday 25th May 2021

al mason sailboat for sale

Grabau International is delighted to announce the listing of the 1995-launched Mason 54 ‘JOAN’.

The penultimate example of this legendary Al Mason designed and Ta Shing built aft cockpit ocean cruising yacht. Launched in 1995 and offered complete with full cruising spec and ICW-friendly rig.

FURTHER BROKER’S COMMENTS:

JOAN is hull number 10 of 11 of the Al Mason designed Mason 54 constructed by the legendary Ta Shing shipyard to Lloyds 100A1 specifications and launched in 1995 for her original US-based owner.

This evergreen and enormously capable ocean cruising yacht has built up a cult following amongst bluewater sailors thanks to her outstanding quality of construction, sea-kindly shape and relentless all-weathers mile-munching capabilities. Her ability to cross oceans in all sea conditions and with predictable passage making times makes her a great option for those looking to take on some serious adventures while her 110vAC domestic systems will allow her to play nicely in US waters as well as European destinations. Her special ICW rig is also designed to allow easy navigation of the Intracoastal Waterway as well as usefully lowering her centre of effort for improved stability under sail.

Purchased by her current British owners in 2004, JOAN (then named ESCAPADE) was sailed extensively on the North American East Coast and then the Mediterranean. Cruised twin-handed at all times, JOAN is configured with in-mast furling and a number of electric winches to ensure safe and easy handling. Her specification highlights include:- • Hull hand laid to Lloyds + 100A1 specifications. • Rig height suitable for navigating the ICW. • Hand built teak interior joinery. • Master and VIP double cabin layout with en suite/day heads arrangement plus forepeak crew/workshop • Cutter rig with removal inner forestay. • Hydraulic adjustable backstay and boom vang. • Genoa roller furler. • In mast furling mainsail. • High-quality stainless steel work with polished welds. • Encapsulated long keel. • No teak to the decks for reduced maintenance and cost. • Comfortable and spacious interior for a more classically styled yacht. • Electric winches • Replacement engine. • Replacement generator. • Heating and air conditioning. • GRP sailing tender/lifeboat • Washer/dryer. • Microwave. • MaxProp 3-blade propeller. • Electric ventilation fans to interior. • DC/AC refrigerator and freezers. • Fly screens for all ports and hatches.

Berthed in Croatia at the time of its inception into the EU, JOAN was then ‘grand-fathered’ into EU CE-exemption and gained full EU VAT-paid status, making her a truly unique proposition amongst these types of boat which are so rarely found for sale within EU or UK waters. Shipped from the Mediterranean to the UK in the summer of 2019, she is now offered for sale with effective UK VAT-paid and UKCA/CE exemption status.

Re-engined in recent seasons with an ultra-reliable Beta Marine 90hp and with the benefit of wonderful non-slip decks (no teak to maintain or replace), she also represents a very cost-effective solution at this size and quality bracket. Now in need of a light mid-life refresh to make her look a million dollars (without costing a million dollars!), JOAN is reluctantly offered for sale as her owners have moved on to much larger boating projects.

BUILDER’S OVERVIEW:

“The Ta Shing Shipyard was established in 1957 with, to quote their website; “Let the owners’ dreams come true.”

Once again, to quote their website; “Ta Shing is an experienced and fully customized boat yacht OEM builder, the boat building experience from Shing-Sheng in 1957 and has constructed more than 1,200 boats. The Models been built include Sailboats: Mason, Tashiba, Taswell, Sky, Mystic, Norseman etc, and now building Nordhavn motoryacht/motorsailer.”

They are renowned for hand crafting using high quality materials such as Burmese teak for much of their yachts’ interiors (the quality of-which is a particular feature of the Taswell brand) to create strong, comfortable and easily managed yachts comparable with brands such as; Najad, Halberg Rassy, Malo and Contest.”

Text taken from Ta Shing’s website MEDIA REVIEW:

“Dancing quickly and quietly through the swell in a fading afternoon westerly off the California coast, the Mason 54’s easy motion defined its 40,000-pound displacement, full keel, and cruising lines. A well-defined cruiser, she performed more like a go-fast, accelerating in the puffs and responding smartly with subtle sail trim. An unexpected treat for this traditionalist, the sea trial of the new Mason was a real eye opener.

The Boat was well driven with main and small genoa on a Harken furler. She moved at 6.5 knots to weather with 12 knots apparent and above 7 knots on a beam reach in the same light air. Performance like that can’t be faulted.

Powered by a 85-horsepower Perkins diesel, the boat turns on a dime and will move at 8 knots at 2,400 rpm, 2,000 rpm seemed better though, pushing her at about 6.5 knots in quiet water.

From the drawing board of designer Al Mason, the hull lines are basically those of the Mason 53, a proven family cruiser stretched slightly, while the interior and deck configurations were redesigned by a talented young Californian, Jeff Leishman.

A solid hand-lay-up built to Lloyd’s 100A1 specs, the hull is beefy. Stiffness is developed with eight full-length stringers and a plethora of transverse members. Balsa-cored glass decks are graced with neatly installed teak decking bent to the sheer and finished with custom design quality.

The aft-cockpit seat has a convenient cutout, allowing quick installation of an emergency tiller.

Instruments, running-light switches, and engine controls are all nicely in reach of the helmsman, whose perch could be aft of the wheel or to the side, with comfort and visibility either way. There are a lot of fine touches topside. Stanchion bases are carefully mortised into the deck so that a tasteful angle to the hull is maintained. There’s a clever setup to release and stow the inner forestay, permitting easy tacking and no genoa hang-ups.

Security for sail handlers is provided by mast pulpits arched for back comfort. Amply sized self-tailing Lewmar winches abound.

The cutter rig is tall and hefty. Fore-spar’s “Furlaway” electric main furler is optional, but skeptics beware-this system permits simple trimming on all angles of sail with the flip of a switch. The main is easily furled inside the spar in a few seconds.

Below, vibration and noise from the engine and generator are nominal, despite their location beneath the main cabin sole. All through-hulls are neatly labelled, and the wiring and plumbing are first rate. Custom breaker panel, automatic locker lighting, and three separate DC systems are but a few more of the special treats.

The main cabin is large, a veritable entertainment center seating a dozen people on two settees. A few grabrails or overhead centerline handholds would make it easier for crew to move fore or aft at sea. Future vessels will have the appropriate handholds.

…. the Mason 54 is a quality package, impressive from every perspective including performance. Sailing it away with all its standard gear and equipment would be a pleasure”
