Effective 7/15/22 All COVID-19 Testing Requirements for Travellers Have Been Revoked!

Effective 15th July, 2022, all entry COVID-19 testing requirements have been revoked. Travellers are no longer required to a negative Covid test upon arrival.

To that end, we met our goals. In the past 7 years there have been over 1.2 million visits to the website and over 3 million pages have been viewed. There are over 1,000 pages on the site featuring news posts and detailed listings on all hotels, villas, restaurants and sailing charters located in the BVI. The BVI Government and many business, hotels, villas and sailing charters have all agreed that the site “moved the needle on tourism” after Irma.

The site, however, has run its course. It has served its purpose by bringing visitors and local businesses together to rebuild the tourist industry and it is now time to shut down operations for good.

The British Virgin Islands (or BVI) are a collection of islands in the Caribbean, just East of Puerto Rico. They have been dubbed the “playground for the rich and famous” and are undoubtedly the perfect setting for relaxing and luxurious yacht charter holidays.

Comprising over 50 stunning islands, most visitors will be familiar with the main locations: Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke.

This itinerary guide will help you plan your trip to get the most out of your experience and ensure you don’t miss anything.

Our proposed route begins from Norman Island and concludes in one of the smallest and most interesting spots, Jost Van Dyke.

Arriving in the British Virgin Islands and embarkation at Norman Island

Most BVI visitors will arrive at Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport (previously known as Beef Island Airport).

You may also fly to St Thomas earlier and explore the area before making your way to Norman Island, where your yacht charter, crew, and captain will be waiting to welcome you on board.

This privately owned and uninhabited island is said to have inspired Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island . It is a heaven for snorkeling enthusiasts, with options whether you are a beginner or not.

The association and history of piracy have led to rich pirate folklore.

• Multiple anchorage options are available  
• The area around the coves can be crowded with day trippers 

> Sailing Norman Island – don’t miss:

• Dining at Pirate’s Bight Restaurant. 
• Hiking trails for those who wish to venture ashore – try Spyglass Hill for beautiful vistas. 
• Sunset drink at Willy T (William Thornton).

Day 1 – Norman Island to Peter Island

As you sail from Norman Island , you’ll first notice the serene blue-green water. It’s like a dreamy swimming pool that goes on forever.

While on Peter Island , enjoy time lounging under the palm trees, or if you prefer something more active, snorkeling around the reefs.

• Usually, a more quiet anchorage than nearby options
• The area was hit hard by Hurricane Irma and is still recovering 

> Sailing Peter Island – don’t miss:

• Exploring old shipwrecks on the south side 
• Swimming among green sea turtles at Little Harbour

• Diving at Dead Chest

Day 2 – Peter Island to Spanish Town

Also known as Valley , Spanish Town is your chance to explore the second-largest town on the BVI and catch up on some shopping.

While you’re there, make sure to visit The Baths, a natural rock formation carved out by the ocean and one of the most popular spots for yacht charters.

• Virgin Gorda is the third largest island 
• Major tourist destination, so crowds are to be expected

Day 3 – spanish town to mountain point.

From Spanish Town, we make our way north to Mountain Point , between Saddle and Long Bay.

This lesser-known spot is home to the Kodiak Queen , a sunken WWII warship that has recently been transformed into an artificial reef.

A perfect spot for recreational diving and educational activities for children and adults.

• Long Bay offers a secluded spot with limited to no facilities perfect for relaxing

> Sailing Mountain Point – don’t miss:

• Snorkel the BVI Art Reef, aka Kodiak Queen

Day 4 – Mountain Point to North Sound

From Mountain Point, you will make your way to North Sound, a favorite spot for yacht charters with stunning waters and some of the most luxurious resorts and privately owned islands .

The world-famous Bitter End Yacht Club is a must for watersport activities, as is a visit to Saba Rock , the iconic acre and a half islet, perfect for an evening cocktail.

• Lots of protected anchorages to choose from 
• Great for adrenaline seekers and water sport enthusiasts 

> Sailing North Sound – don’t miss:

• Snorkeling at Prickly Pear Island and Moskito Island
• Adventure watersports at Bitter End Yacht Club
• Fancy dining at Biras Creek 

Types of Charter Yachts

We recommend either chartering a   catamaran   or a motor yacht f or your crewed yacht charter vacation in the British Virgin Islands. Why? The water in the BVI is very shallow, which greatly limits accessibility for deep-drafted yachts.

Day 5 – North Sound to Anegada

From North Sound, it’s time to head even further north. Anegada is the third largest barrier reef in the world and host to the famous BVI full moon parties .

The name Anegada was given by the Spanish and translates to “Downed Land” for its flat terrain.

The highest point is only 28 feet above sea level. Its dreamy, powdery beaches go on for miles, while the coral landscape makes this a perfect spot for underwater explorations.

The island is known for its fresh seafood, especially lobster , which you’ll find on offer on every menu.

• It is best to book restaurants ahead, especially for lobster!

Day 6 – Anegada to Jost Van Dyke

A beautiful day of sailing is ahead of you on Day 6 as you make your way south towards Jost Van Dyke . The island is famous for the Soggy Dollar , a laid-back beach bar that you will have to swim to reach, hence the name.

Its specially blended dark rum, pineapple, orange juice, and cream of coconut cocktail has become synonymous with Caribbean holidays since its creation in the 1970s.

• White Bay can be a crowded spot.

Day 7 – Jost Van Dyke to agreed disembarkation point

The last day of your journey will be a comfortable sail back to Tortola , where you will disembark, prepare to catch your flight or stay and linger on the island.

The route can differ based on weather and preference and will be agreed upon with your captain. If you prefer to extend your stay in the BVI , we can help coordinate a transfer to another resort or villa.

How to Tie a Bowline

Knowing how to tie a bowline, the right way, is one of the fundamental sailing skills we should all know..

What do you use a bowline for?

Bowline – one of the ‘big five’ sailing knots you should know:.

• Round-turn and 2 half hitches
• Sheet Bend (including the double)
• Clove hitch
• Stopper knot (2 to choose from)

The bowline is used to form a secure loop in the end of a line.

Using the bowline

When and why you should use this knot.

The bowline’s advantage is it’s ability to be untied, even after being under extreme pressure (there are limits – although I have not come across them yet) you simply ‘break the back of the knot’ and it becomes easy to untie.

A bowline should be used to secure a line (often attached to a boat) to an open position, for instance, over the top of a cleat or a bollard.

A bowline should not be used to secure a line to a ‘closed position’ (see round-turn-and-two-half-hitches) like a ring. This is because the knot cannot be untied under pressure, only once it has been under pressure. The majority of the time, there would be no penalty for tieing to a closed position, until, that is, the other end becomes jammed, and you will have to cut the line releasing any strain in an uncontrolled way. A round turn and two half-hitches, will allow a control untying whist underpressure.

Why this method?

We think that this method of how to tie a bowline beats all others. The “figure 6” method is too ‘fragile’. If you are going to learn how to tie a bowline, we recommend you use this method from the start, this way you can deal with tying the knot, even when it is under pressure – and even one handed. and has these advantages.We think this method of tying a bowline has several advantages over the other figure 6 – followed by the rabbit up the hole. In this version, the rabbit starts up and out of the hole.

• Can be retained using muscle memory.
• Can be tied without looking.
• Can be tied whilst the line is under pressure.
• Can be ties one handed.

Rendezvous diving

If your crewed charter yacht does not offer onboard diving then fear not, rendezvous diving can be arranged.

So what is Rendezvous diving?

A local dive company will pick you up direct from your charter yacht at a pre-determined location and take you for a one- or two-tank dive to experience the BVI below the water. This is an excellent option if only a couple of guests wish to dive or can work equally as well if all your group are interested. If your charter yacht offers minimal onboard diving, then rendezvous diving can also work if you wanted to add a few more dives during your charter.

Rendezvous diving is at additional cost, payable locally. The dive company provides all gear.
