Alumni Sailing

Alumni sailing is carried out like most classes are - only better, since we're saving some trees by giving no written tests! On our first day, we will have a discussion of the week's schedule, including: route, weather, stops and duties of each alumni onboard. Each day, one of our alumni will be "Captain of the Day", in charge of the day's voyage and operation. The rest of the crew will assist the person in charge. The captain of the vessel will insure proper procedures and bring coaching/advice on proper ways and better techniques of reaching our goals.

Requirements are ASA 104: Bareboat Charter certification or equivalent experience.

Marsh Harbour, Abacos, Bahamas

We are not currently teaching courses in the Abacos. Please see our Fort Lauderdale or Virgin Islands bases for Catamaran training.

We actually went somewhere (Key Largo), rather than returning to the dock each evening. The course was made to be an adventure, as well as simply instructional. The weather was “made to order” — sun and gentle breeze Saturday through Wednesday, then Force 8 for our ‘foul weather instruction’ on Thursday.

I thought it was an excellent, challenging course. It definitely wasn’t a “cruise.” The instructor expected a lot from the students. I like that.

I have nothing but the utmost praise for your entire operation and the quality of the instruction that I received. Al Hatch is a consummate instructor and brings to this activity a love and a passion that is genuine and expansive. I hope to be able to return to Blue Water to experience some of the higher-level courses of instruction, and I certainly would have no trouble at all recommending your company to anyone.

Catamaran Sailing RYA Cruising Classes. Transfer your sailing skills to a Catamaran!  We now offer our RYA courses also on Catamarans to expand your horizons and allow you to experience sailing on board a different breed of vessel.

Why a catamaran .

  • SPACIOUS – a bigger living space and home comfort
  • STABLE   – healing angle is minimal
  • HANDLING – two engines, “Split the sticks” manoeuvring and docking made easy

Catamarans can be great charter options as they are very family and group friendly, with plenty of room to congregate and share meals after a good day of sailing along the coast of Antigua or up to the beautiful island of Barbuda.

We offer our standard RYA Competent Crew , RYA Day Skipper and RYA Coastal Skipper onboard, as well as a special Transition to Catamarans week so that you can both deepen your skippering skills and widen your options when chartering or sailing your own boat.

During your time on board, we will explore the differences between monohull and catamaran sailing such as tacking angles and docking practices , as well as covering the full RYA syllabus for your course.  Overboard crew recovery, downwind sailing, safety, and navigation will be addressed (just to name a few) while also making sure we take time to stop for a swim break along one of our beautiful beaches.

You will be learning on a comfortable cruising catamaran with three or four ensuite cabins, showers and heads, fully equipped galley, a saloon, and a spacious area on deck.

RYA Competent Crew Course

The RYA Competent Crew Catamaran Training course is ideal for beginners. It’s the ideal course for those who want to participate as crew, learning the ropes and basic skills to help run a Catamaran.

RYA Day Skipper Course

The RYA Day Skipper certificate is the minimum accepted certificate by most authorities worldwide to charter a yacht or Catamaran. To get the RYA Day Skipper Certificate you need to complete the practical course and pass the assessment of RYA Day Skipper Theory . At our school, we require proof of completion of the Day Skipper Theory course before enrolling in the practical course. We recommend completing the RYA Day Skipper Theory course online (the most convenient option) or in the classroom beforehand.

Holders of an RYA Day Skipper certificate can apply to the RYA for an ICC (International Certificate of Competence) which is an internationally recognized qualification.

 RYA Coastal Skipper Course

The RYA Coastal Skipper Certification enables sailors to sail Catamarans on coastal passages, both during the day and at night . It requires a higher level of competence and decision-making abilities, as sailors may encounter more challenging weather conditions and navigate unfamiliar waters, and to other islands including custom procedures.

To get the RYA Coastal Skipper Certificate you need to complete the practical course and pass the assessment of RYA Coastal Skipper Theory / Yachtmaster Offshore . At our school, we require proof of completion of the theory course before enrolling in the practical course. We recommend completing the course online (the most convenient option) or in the classroom beforehand.

Transition course for Certified Day/Coastal Skippers to sail Catamarans

A bespoke course designed to enable a certified monohull Day Skipper or Coastal Skipper to make the cross over to Catamaran sailing. The emphasis is developing practical boat handling skills for sail and power required onboard a Catamaran as opposed to a monohull.

RYA Day Skipper Online Course | Get your ICC

Official rya day skipper knowledge & theory course.

The RYA Day Skipper Online Course prepares sailors to confidently skipper small yachts (28ft and greater) in coastal waters and qualify for the ICC License. Covering navigation, pilotage, collision avoidance, rules of the road, weather forecasting, and passage planning, this comprehensive course is a prerequisite for the RYA Day Skipper certificate and ICC License. Practical training with an authorized RYA school is required for certification. Alternatively, sailors can obtain the globally accepted SLC. By course completion, participants will possess the knowledge and confidence to navigate coastal waters and handle various sailing scenarios.

Estimated Time: 40 hours Price: $294 + support materials (approx. $95 in the US and CAN)

If you want to get an International Sailing License, particularly for the Mediterranean, you have two best options: the ICC or the SLC.  This course is the Official RYA Day Skipper Course. You will gain the ICC after passing this course AS WELL AS you must pass a 5-day practical training and assessment on-the-water training at an official RYA School. Just FYI - In North America, there are a limited number of RYA Schools. But many worldwide.

Your second option for an International Sailing License is the NauticEd SLC where there are many more training and assessment centers in North America (and a few worldwide). See below for the SLC options.

This RYA Day Skipper Course

Sign up today and gain the necessary knowledge and skills to confidently skipper a sailboat (28 feet or 8.5 meters, and greater) in coastal waters. This comprehensive course covers topics such as navigation, pilotage, collision avoidance, rules of the road, weather forecasting, and passage planning.

By the end of the course, you will have gained the knowledge and confidence necessary to skipper a vessel and handle a variety of situations that may arise at sea. Don't hesitate to start your journey toward becoming a competent and safe skipper. Embark on this official RYA Day Skipper Course online and fulfill the knowledge requirements for obtaining your ICC License and RYA Day Skipper Certificate.

The exam is an open-book exam and is graded by a real human usually in 1-2 days. It covers general knowledge questions as well as chart plotting and tides. If you don't pass the first time, you can take the exam again.

Once you have gained the RYA Day Skipper Certificate you are eligible for an ICC which is gained through the RYA in the U.K.  (instructions for obtaining the ICC after passing this course are included in this course). Alternatively, consider the NauticEd SLC (International Sailing License and Credentials) and Bareboat Charter Master bundle. The SLC is an equally accepted Sailing License globally and has more assessment schools throughout North America as well as some internationally - see the NauticEd Sailing Schools page.

Student Reviews

Excellent course and very thorough. I had one issue with something technical and Grant responded right away to offer assistance. Couldn't recommend more!

The animations were useful to help understand the subjects.

The interactive content was great. Also the animations helped a lot with learning the concepts. I also liked the additional useful information given above the course content. Especially some of the external links. The value for money was good as well.

Wealth of additional information to consider as you begin to set up your boat for cruising.

This is a very thorough preparation for the RYA Day Skipper Theory test. There are so many, excellent practice questions and exercises throughout the course, that I couldn't help but ask myself "is that all?" upon reaching the end of the final exam. The RYA material itself is excellent and the NauticEd material online summarizes and supplements the key points very well.

kept the nose to the grindstone had to get money out of the deal

The content was comprehensive with clear examples and animations making it easy to understand. The end of module questions really helped consolidate what I had learned. I loved being able to take the course at my own pace, fitting my learning around other commitments. I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting to gain a good knowledge base that can be used whenever you go out sailing.

RYA courses are far superior to anything this side of the pond. NauticEd Ed presents the material well and the proctored remote exams are superb. You need this qualification along with the practical RYA Day Skipper to sail in many European Countries. Don’t go to Greece without it.

covers the material very well and in depth provides practical advice for real-life situations the structure and feel of the course is consistent with the RYA exam - I felt very well prepared for the exam

Excerpt from the course

The following is an excerpt from this course

RYA Day Skipper Course: Tides and Current

... So what are the tide heights at times other than at high and at low? You can not assume a linear progression. It more acts like a sine curve. To calculate the tide height at any time you use a tide curve specific for that location.

... The following animation shows how to predict the tidal height using a tide chart.

Testimonial/Review

Subject: Sailing

For a while, I had been keen to do some sailing, but my wife Janice had shown little enthusiasm. I researched the idea and decided catamaran sailing would most likely appeal to her.

I found Pacific Sailing School offered a Competent Crew course on a Catamaran out of Sydney. Janice agreed to participate in this five-day and four-night course to see if she would ever be interested in sailing with me ( she’d had almost no experience of sailing). We set sail onboard a Seawind 1160 Catamaran with 3 other student sailors and our instructor Brett Hodder.

We loved it and Janice was hooked on sailing. Our instructor was a patient teacher with a wonderful sense of humor. It was a fun time but Brett was always teaching. He included each person being mindful of their particular experience and skill level. He was patient and confident while students attempted new skills/maneuvers. Life onboard the Seawind 1160 was a fun time. While there was plenty of room on board for the six of us, we could see the boat could easily be managed by a couple.

The highlight for Janice was night sailing into Sydney Harbour identifying different lights /markers while the student Day Skippers navigated the way in. We intend soon to do the Pacific Sailing Schools Day Skipper Course with Brett on the Seawind 1260 and feel confident we’ll then be ready to pursue my( now our) sailing dream.

We highly recommend this course. Adrian and Janice Mulligan

Becoming ASA Certified is just the beginning…

We give you the knowledge and experience to be confident and safe on all your sailing adventures – whether you charter a boat from a local harbor, go on an exotic sailing vacation, or even buy your own boat.

Once you have achieved certification, practice, practice, practice! How your sailing ability will be evaluated depends on many things; when, where, and to what level you become ASA certified, and how much you have sailed since your certification. However, being ASA certified will be yours for life as a testament to your ability and commitment from the day your ASA instructor signs your Logbook.

ASA Certifications

catamaran skipper course

Listed below are the summaries of all ASA’s Certifications. The detailed standards, including pre-requisites, for each certification may be found by clicking the title, they are also published in the ASA Official International Certification Logbook .

Each certification requires participants to fully satisfy both knowledge and skills standards, which will be verified through a written exam and an on-the-water practical exam. The standards are intended to be a minimum  set of requirements.  ASA affiliate sailing schools and instructors may choose to include additional requirements if they wish to emphasize knowledge or skills appropriate to local waters, conditions or practice vessels.

RYA Day Skipper

RYA Day Skipper courses can be taken in either sail or motor yachts and your certificate will be endorsed accordingly.

This is very much a hands-on course with little time to teach navigation or other theoretical subjects. It is therefore recommended that you take the RYA Day Skipper shorebased course prior to your practical course so you can put those skills into practice on the water. If you need a Day Skipper certificate in order to work on board a commercial craft subject the to MCA's codes of practice, you will need to get it commercially endorsed. You can then work on commercial vessels up to 24m in length, operating in category 5 and 6 waters - that is up to 20 miles from a nominated departure point in fine weather and daylight. Please note: If you will be working in category 5 waters, you will need to hold both the shorebased and practical Day Skipper certificates, and get them commercially endorsed. If you hold a non-tidal Day Skipper certificate and want to work in category 6 waters, you will also need to hold the Day Skipper shorebased certificate. Our section 'Where you can work with RYA qualifications'  has further information on the categorisation of waters.
