Welcome to the Com-Pac Idea

Com-Pac Yachts began business in 1974 with our first boat, the Com-Pac 16. The idea then was to build a seaworthy yacht with a strong commitment to value. (For the full story, see Hutchins Company Profile .) Since then we have expanded our line and today we have twelve models, six cat-rigged sailboats, five sloop rigged sailboats and one power launch. The Com-Pac line covers a wide range of sizes from a 14' day sailor to the Com-Pac 27/3 cruising yacht . Each model, regardless of size, is built with the same exacting attention to detail and that same commitment to value.

All the convenience of our cat boats in a sloop-rigged daysailer with a 9' cockpit --> --> The Launch is a comfortable, multiuse yacht for a leisurely cruise for sightseeing, to dinner or, even, the occasional overnighter. --> -->

Our line of modern cat-rigged models (dubbed “A New Breed of Catboat”) offer the ultimate in trailer-sailing ease and rig set up. All come with the Mastendr™ quick-rig sailing system that allows for the boom, sail, and gaff to be left installed on the boat while the mast is folded or raised. The shrouds stay attached and the head stay disconnects with the flip of the pre-adjusted forestay self-locking lever. This system, unique to Com-Pac, adds an ease and convenience to trailer sailing that is really astounding. Your mast is up and you are ready to go in seconds, not minutes.

Our newest sloop-rigged models are the Eclipse SL , the Legacy , and the Legacy Sport daysailer. We consider these yachts “crossover” models. We have taken all of the convenience and features of our cat boat line and applied them to these new exciting sloops. Features include the Mastendr™ (Eclipse), Boomtendr™ (Legacy & Sport), keel centerboard hull configuration and low riding trailers for ease of launching and retrieval.

The three traditionally rigged sloops ( 23/IV , 23 Pilothouse , and 27/3 ) have full masthead, eight stay rigs and fixed keels. As such they can be sailed in areas and conditions that lesser sloops would be wise to avoid. Many of our sloops have long cruises to their credit. Coastal cruising, Gulf of Mexico crossings, and long term Bahamas cruises are a few that are recorded. The 23/IV and 23 Pilothouse are trailerable but they are still full fledged cruising yachts. We did not compromise sea-worthiness or comfort. When the 23/IV or 23 Pilothouse is fitted with the available custom trailer, they can easily be taken over the road for vacation or winter storage.

The new launch with the available electric propulsion is perfect for an evening of touring the harbor, canals and waterways or even more varied areas of interest with the standard 2 cylinder diesel engine.

All of our models come with an extraordinary list of amenities and standard equipment. From the 14' Picnic Cat to the 27' cruiser, you will find everything you need for that day sail, day cruise, weekend getaway or extended cruise.

If you are looking for something other than an “off the shelf” yacht, then Com-Pac is for you. Many builders today do not give you any more choices than cushion fabric and canvas colors. Whether your yacht is 14' or 27', nowhere else will you find the freedom of involvement and creativity you will find by sitting down with us and discussing your dream yacht. Our answer to 95% of requests for personalization is “we can do that.”

sailer. The key to wanting a like this is you need / want to trailer around to different places and or access shallow waters.

You just are not going to want this for an ocean . You could easily sail this boat on short hops where you pick the day and the . In heavy weather it's not going to handle as well as a traditional boat would. It's not built to that level of construction because it's primary purpose would not include that type of use plus it has to be trailered around.

As a trailer sailor they come with a nice setup for staying aboard overnight and you may have trouble finding a more spacious trailer-able boat. It is clearly optimized for space aboard and ease of trailering.

If you just want to keep a boat in one place and sail it from there then maybe this isn't a good choice.

I guess the term "trailerable" is subjective. I bought this boat and trailered from Colorado to , and southern . As well as seasonally to and from the reservoir she spent summers on.
Then I stupidly got bigger boat fever and it. What an idiot.

PRICED WELL BELOW MARKET!

Com Pac Yachts , part of the Hutchins Company, a family owned-and-operated corporation founded in 1957 by W.L. Hutchins Sr. They began building sailboats in 1970 and continue to this day in Clearwater, Florida.

Traditional styling , solid construction and a timeless design all combine to make the Com Pac 27/2 the perfect extended cruiser . Her shoal draft keel makes her an ideal choice for gunkholing the shallows of the Chesapeake Bay. Originally designed by Bob Jonson, founder and lead designer of Island Packet, the Com Pac 27 was first introduced in 1986 and still remains in production to this day.

Below decks, you’ll be amazed at the abundance of interior space . Remarkable head room and a well designed layout make this 27-footer feel much larger than she is. She’s designed to sleep six with opposing settees in the salon that convert to double bunk berths port and starboard while the roomy v-berth provides private sleeping quarters for two. A fully enclosed head compartment is amidships to starboard opposite the fully equipped galley to port at the base of the companionway. Com Pac’s use of woods throughout, including the teak and holly soles and solid headliner give her an elegant look . With her eight opening brass ports , two deck vents and two large opening hatches, ventilation is a… breeze!

Topsides the Com Pac 27/2 is easy to move about. Her uncluttered wide side decks , lifelines and full length teak hand-holds make her safe to get to and work the foredeck under any conditions. With her roller-furling genoa , all handling lines leading aft and wheel steering, she’s a cinch to single-hand. Whether you’re new to sailing or a seasoned expert, you’ll surely appreciate her agility and stability whether in a strong blow or a gentle bay breeze. However, a speed demon she is not…you won’t win races with the Com Pac 27/2. Since her outboard rigging shrouds and genoa track will not allow for close sheeting angles, her windward performance will not be the greatest. Then again, she wasn’t designed to win races…she was designed for comfortable , safe handling and cruising …which she does beautifully .

Her current owner has enjoyed this Com Pac 27/2 for many, many seasons on the fresh waters of the upper Chesapeake Bay and hasn't missed a year yet…until now. Physical limitations, due to age, have created this wonderful opportunity for her next Skipper. She’s is seriously for sale (which is reflected by the price) . The bottom has been freshly painted, her hull sides, top sides and interior have been cleaned for the season and she’s ready to be launched so she can continue her voyages with her new Captain at the helm... Will it be you?

There are only three other Com Pac 27’s available (at the time of this listing) , as seen on Yacht World. Two are much older while the third, more comparable one is priced much higher. This is an excellent opportunity , for an excellent sailing vessel with a legacy that still continues today. Don’t let this one pass you by!

IJPE : 327.42 sq ft I : 31.42 ft J : 11.00 ft P : 25.75 ft E : 12.00 ft

The Com-Pac 27-2 is built in the traditional Hutchins style, with bronze ports, bronze deck hardware, and extensive teak. She tracks straight, maneuvers tightly, and accelerates easily. Her balanced ends offer agile performance even in light air. She turns within her own length, and motors as well as she sails. The 6-foot 10-inch cockpit with port and starboard seat lockers also has wet storage under a contoured helmsman's seat. Wide decks and cabin top provide plenty of room for sail-handling. The Com-Pac 27-2's interior allows standing head room, six berths and an enclosed head with optional hot water shower. A full galley, hanging locker and storage space helps to satisfy the needs of a cruising family. Two hatches and eight opening ports ensure ample ventilation and a bright, airy atmosphere below. Her two-cylinder, fresh-water cooled diesel, or her powerful sail plan with standard 135 percent roller furling Genoa, smoothly propel the Com-Pac 27-2 through crowded harbors or across open water.

Caliber 28 vs. Island Packet 27 vs. Com-Pac 27

  • Add to quote

A couple years back I was lurking/posting here and got some great suggestions regarding living abroad and cruising. In the past two years we bought a small house, had a baby, and revised our plans. Rather than looking at a 37' to 42' cruisers, we are limiting our search for a first boat to smaller boats--probably 27' to 34'. Ideally, we'd like to find an older boat in good condition, for under $30,000. Most of our sailing will be in the Chesapeake Bay, but we hope to cruise as well. Possible destinations include the ICU, east coast, or Caribbean. So we strongly prefer a boat that is stout enough to allow us to plan a few adventures further afield. Of course we also hope to fit three people--two adults and a little boy--on the boat, albeit with careful planning/rationing and no expectation of privacy. So far, we’ve identified a few boats we want to know more about. In each case there’s a boat on the market within our budget that we could consider: -Com-Pac 27 -Caliber 28 -Island Packet 27 (We talked about Orions. But those seem a little pricey for budget ...) Thoughts? Experiences? If you have a hands-down favorite, that would be good to know too. Any other boats to consider?

com pac 27 sailboat

I'm surprised you didn't get any responses. I'm no expert but the Com-Pac 27 has always stood out to me (based mostly on interent browsing) for it's all around practicality considering both price and size. If I wanted to move up in boat size without actually taking on much more expense I'd consider it. I like it's solid look and think the simple aft head layout is ideal for that size boat. The island packet is also a Bob Johnson design but it's 1' wider and 1 ton heavier. I think the build quality of the island packet is probably going to be better but the Com-Pac is unique for a 27 footer because it actually survived through the 90's into today. So unlike most used 27 footers you can actually find newish used ones if you want. I think that speaks to what I said initially which is that it's a good all around value. Note that Bob Johnson boats are known for their comparatively large cabin size but not their sailing ability. Neither of them are going to be particularly quick. I don't know much about the caliber.

Thanks for the response! We are still hunting. We saw the Island Packet, and like it a lot, partly because it is such a beefy, stable platform for a couple of newer sailers and a little kid with some room down below. However, most of the IP 27s are a bit outside our current budget. We've ruled out the Caliber for the moment, because the one we'd ideally buy is again, a little expensive, and we'd have to move her cross country. The local example, also nice, received a ton of offers in the wake of the Annapolis boat show. But if another comes on the market in our region, it'd be back on the list. We haven't seen the Com-Pac yet. Since then we've looked at an older Sabre 30 (with a newer engine! -- but the owners been letting her sit for the past couple yrs or so), and are traveling tomorrow to see an IP 26 Mark 1, a 29.9 Bristol, and a 31' CAL. So we are casting this way and that way, trying to figure out which of these boats is still in reasonable condition (since we're not clever enough to take on project boats, only to maintain already nice ones) ... and what will work for us personally. I tend, just by personality, to lean toward somewhat heavier, more forgiving boats, at possible expense of performance; but I am not sure if that is a mistake, and that for the Chesapeake especailly, if a livlier boat like the CAL isn't a good idea. If anyone has advice/experiences to share, we're all ears.... I am having an especially hard time locating information on the IP 26, beyond the original promotional brochure. I'm a bit fascinated by the fact that she has a centerboard, but wondering if she performs reasonably well/is seakindly for a 26' craft, or if she's really meant just to gunkhole.

My dad had a com-pac 27 & loved it. They are well built boats, if you can find one I'd take that over the IP. Don't know the caliber 27 but have sailed one of their larger boats (47) from Trinidad to Annapolis. My impression was of a very well built solid ocean vessel. From what you said in the original posting I'd go with the Com-pac.

Funny how I found this thread. I have previously owned a ComPac 27 and am now looking at a Caliber 28. The IP 27 is also on my wish list although out of the price range. It's very late right now and no time to respond properly. If you would like an indepth response or have specific questions about the ComPac just ask. I really enjoy talking about my old boat even though it is another skipper's hands now.

Hey, thanks for the reply. I think we've narrowed down our list of prospective boats and the particular Com-Pac I had in mind got eliminated. (Though if our current picks don't pan out, we'll keep looking, and Com-Pac might get back on the list! ...) Are you looking at the Caliber in Tennessee? She looks wonderful (from a distance, anyway), but she was too pricey/far away for us to make a bid.

Island Packets are still in production and there is a good online support forum as well. I don't know if the others are still being built.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
