What Is a Trimaran?

luxury sailing trimaran

A trimaran is a multi hulled sailboat with three individual hulls; the main hull ( vaka ) and a pair of outrigger hulls ( amas ). These smaller outrigger hulls are attached to the main hull using beams.

While trimarans have a rich history dating back nearly four millennia, these types of sailboats have only gained popularity in the late 1900s and early 2000s.

Trimarans are primarily used as personal boats for sailing enthusiasts or racing. These sailboats draw their versatility from their lightweight design, making them faster and easier to handle at sea when compared to single-hulled boats (monohulls). Additionally, the three hulls also contribute to better stability, making it very hard to capsize (although more likely than a cat according to this study)

Trimarans come in various sizes, and some can be as small as 19 feet (5.8 meters) in length, while others go up to 60 feet (18meters). They’re also used for different purposes. Most trimarans are used for racing and recreational purposes, although some units are still used as ferries.

As with all things, to find out which is the best we need to understand what it will be used for. There is a big difference in requirements between a boat used for day sailing compared to offshore around the world sailing.

The list below highlights the best trimarans for different purposes.

Best Trimarans For Cruising, Liveaboard and Sailing Around The World

The Neel 43 is a French trimaran best suited for cruising. Its key features include:

  • Easy maneuverability on the open sea by only a small number of crew members

Still on design, the Neel 47 is ideal for couples looking to take a weekend off or spend some time as liveaboard. It has a spacious owner’s cabin and two bedrooms. It also features a spacious living room and kitchen and is optimized to ensure comfort for a couple.

The Rapido 60 offers a blend of performance, safety, and luxury, making it one of the best options for bluewater sailing. Measuring 59.3 feet (18 meters) in length, the Rapido 60 is an imposing unit. It’s made from lightweight sandwiches and carbon materials that provide speed and strength, allowing it to stand up to strong ocean currents.

The Rapido 60 also has spacious living spaces and is built for comfort at all points of the sail. Its design also optimizes safety. While it’s an ideal option for circumnavigating, it’s also an excellent choice for racing due to its speed.

This is also the same boat that The Youtube channel La Vagabond just purchased.

The Rapido 60 retails at $1,400,000 .

4. Rapido 40

The Rapido 40 measures 39.4 feet (12 meters) in length and is ideal for cruising around the world. The Rapido 40 features twin “C” foils, which provide added lift, enhancing its speed and performance whether you are sailing downwind or upwind.

Because it has C foils, this trimaran doesn’t have a central daggerboard, increasing interior space. Accordingly, it’s an excellent option for couples looking to cruise and enjoy great performances .

The Rapido 40 is made from high-tech all-carbon materials for a lightweight yet sturdy design. This material is also used for the countertops and furniture, and the cork flooring adds a touch of style.

This trimaran retails for $595,000 , making it a cheaper option than the Rapido 60.

5. Dragonfly 40

The Dragonfly 40 measures 40 feet (12 meters) in length. It features high-comfort standards, making it one of the best trimarans in the market for taking your family for a cruise. Because of its larger size, it has a better capacity, being capable of accommodating six to eight people, so you can bring your family and friends along.

It’s easy to navigate and extremely safe. With a maximum speed of 24 knots (44.5 km/h), this trimaran also provides fast speeds to make your cruise even more exhilarating.

Although slightly longer than the Dragonfly 28 with its 32-foot (9.8-meter) length, the Dragonfly 32 has a max speed of 23+ knots (42.6+ km/h), making it one of the fastest trimarans for racing. This unit also has comfortable accommodation, which makes it an ideal option for a weekend cruise with family and friends.

The Dragonfly 32 has a base price of $350,000 .

Thanks to a variable draft with a retractable rudder, the Corsair 37 is an ideal choice for shallow water exploration. This 37-foot (11.3-meter) long trimaran features advanced foam-cored construction designed for safety, making it virtually unsinkable.

The carbon hulls minimize weight, this makes for a lightweight ocean exploration sailboat with blistering speeds. One of its selling points is that this trimaran has previously been used for Arctic expeditions, possibly marking it as one of the better options for circumnavigation and offshore sailing in the northern waters.

This trimaran has a base price of $189,000 but can go up to $204,125 .

The Dragonfly 25 retails from EUR 86,800 .

The Pulse 600 trimaran is a compact sailboat. It’s made from lightweight, carbon-reinforced construction and vacuum-formed materials for optimal speed. This trimaran is an ideal option if you are looking for speed.

This trimaran measures 19.8 feet (6 meters) in length and can be sailed single-handedly by one person with minimal effort. The Pulse 600 has a base price of $38,800 , which places it in the lower price range.

The F-22 is one of the smaller trimarans in the market. Developed in New Zealand, the F-22 is a folding trimaran built for speed. The hulls are made from narrow fiberglass tied together using fiberglass beams and aluminum, minimizing bulk while optimizing speed.

The F-22 is roomy and is not as pricey as other models in the market. This trimaran has two main versions:

12. 2019 Weta Trimaran

The 2019 Weta trimaran is a 14.5-foot (4.4-meter) trimaran featuring a carbon frame, centerboard, rudder foil, and rudder shock. The hull is made from fiberglass and foam. The Weta is built for strength and speed based on these lightweight materials.

The 2019 Weta trimaran is easy to sail and is worth considering whether you want to take a quiet sail, race with your friends, or take kids to a sailing lesson. It has a simple design and is easy to set up independently. Thanks to its collapsible design, this trimaran is easily stored away with minimal space demands.

13. WindRider 17

The 17.4-foot (5.3-meter) WindRider 17 is one of the more versatile trimarans in the market. It packs high performance for a low cost. This trimaran has a light rotating mast to boost performance, and a full-battened mainsail optimizes visibility.

This sailboat is made from rotomolded polyethylene, which is more durable than fiberglass and demands less maintenance.

The WindRider 17 has a comfortable interior and can fit six adults. This is an ideal choice for social sailing for a couple or a family and friends. It’s easy to ride, and a shallow draft allows easy maneuverability.

14. Astus 22.5

If you’re looking for something small but still comfortable, this 22.5-foot trimaran is for you. Built for speed and maneuverability, the Astus 22.5 has optional foils to optimize speed. The Multi 23 trimaran has a contemporary design, featuring a vinyl ester and PVC foam core construction. The section below the waterline is made of solid glass for a sturdy base.

The beams are made of lightweight carbon, and the trimaran features a 33-foot (10-meter) aluminum rotating wing mast for optimal harnessing of the wind. While ideal for weekend excursions with family, once rigged with the asymmetrical spinnaker will get your heart pumping.

This trimaran packs high performance at a lower cost than most other options in the market. It’s a good choice if you are looking for a high-performing unit without spending an arm and a leg.

16. Challenger Class Trimaran

The Challenger Trimaran 15 is the best choice for persons with disabilities. It’s designed to provide disabled sailors an opportunity to explore their passion for sailing without worrying about aspects like safety or operation.

A man named Geoff Hold circumnavigated the British Isles in 2007, becoming the first disabled person to achieve this feat. He had quadriplegia.

Living up to its name, the Challenger can withstand harsh weather conditions while blending performance with speed.

Final Thoughts

But whether you are looking to race with your friends, take your loved ones or friends for a cruise over the weekend, or circumnavigate the ocean, you can rest assured that these lightweight trimarans will deliver speed, safety, and comfort to make it worth your while.

These brands are innovatively designed and feature intricate safety mechanisms that make them virtually unsinkable. Give them a shot and begin your ocean adventure.

ASK ABOUT THIS YACHT

luxury sailing trimaran

The 210 Sunreef Power Trimaran is the avant-garde of superyacht design and the ultimate expression of engineering expertise. An ambitious 210ft three-hulled concept, it fully utilizes the space within and between the hulls to reach a living area of nearly 1000m². The vessel’s outdoor social area features an immense flybridge, a cockpit opening onto the saloon as well as terraces at the front and aft.

The power trimaran’s upper deck features an aft terrace giving access to a grand dining room, an internal navigation station, a gym space, and the captain’s cabin. The main deck stretches over 510m² of entirely customizable surface. The saloon features a main lounging space placed amidships and four relaxing scenic areas with floor to ceiling glass windows.

The optional layout comprises six guest cabins, all fitted with large double beds, each facing retractable private balconies. The primary tender for up to 12 is stowed in the foredeck along with the crew dinghy. Placed forward is the stately master suite with panoramic widows, twin dressing rooms, an office and access to a private front terrace.

The lower level of the 210 Sunreef Power Trimaran is entirely devoted to the crew. Accessed through the water toys garage storing two jets skis and sea bobs, the central hull houses a fully equipped galley, dining and sleeping quarters, a laundry and large storage areas. All three levels of the trimaran are connected via an elevator and a spiral staircase.

General Information

“I  sailed Rapido Hull #01 on the Mediterranean Sea the other day and we were doing 14 knots upwind while cooking in the spacious kitchen!" Ferdinand van West (former F18 World Champion working with designers, Morrelli & Melvin ). ( Click here for original article in Catamaran Racing.)

Billed as the World’s Ultimate Ocean Cruising Trimaran , the Rapido 60 really is the Queen of the Oceans . It offers speed, safety, performance – and luxury.

The inspiration behind the Rapido 60 comes from Paul Koch (co founder of Rapido Trimarans), arguably, the man who has built more production trimarans than anyone else on the planet.

The design is by world renowned naval architects, Morelli & Melvin Design and Engineering who use some of the most sophisticated technology in the world. Triac Composites  is our exclusive builder.

While the foam sandwich and carbon construction is lightweight which gives the boat its speed, it also provides an extremely strong and rigid structure that has been designed to withstand the might of the oceans.

An additional benefit of the foam sandwich construction is the high degree of insulation, protecting the Rapido when the sun beats down.

Morelli & Melvin enjoy a very strong international reputation. Their designs even include entries for the America’s Cup .

[Video caption: Take a tour onboard Rapido 60, Romanza with owners, Dougall and Jaz Love, during Hamilton Island Race Week.]

Morrelli & Melvin’s computer modelling said that the Rapido 60 was very strong. And so we tested it.

We bolted the centre hull of the Rapido to the factory floor in HCMC. We then brought in two mobile cranes – each took a diagonal corner of the two outer hulls. With one diagonal corner each, the two cranes began to lift while the trimaran’s centre hull remained bolted to the floor, causing it to twist. One tonne of lifting pressure… Two tonnes… Three tonnes…

As the trimaran twisted it began to creak and groan. But the sensitive electronic equipment we had measuring every move and twist remained unphased. Everything was within design parameters.

Seven tonnes… Eight tonnes… Nine tonnes…

The pressure was eased and the Rapido spring back into its original condition – totally unaffected by the enormous twisting pressure that had been placed upon it.

The computer modelling had accurately predicted the incredible structural strength of the composites used in the Rapido. The Rapido is built to take on the oceans.

Rapido is, simply, the Queen of the Oceans.

Incredible storage capacity

The Rapido 60 has amazing storage capability in the floats (4.8m x 1.3m), beneath the seats in the cockpit (2.1m x 0.5m) and in the forward cabin (1.4m x 1.2m x 1.2m).

The Rapido 60 has amazing, dedicated storage capacity. Floats (4.8m x 1.3m). Beneath the cockpit seats (2.1m x 0.5m). Beneath the cockpit floor (2.1m x 2.9m x 1.3m). Forward of forward cabin (1.4m x 1.2m x 1.2m).

FAST AND POWERFUL

Trimarans are safe, powerful and fast as demonstrated by the fact that they consistently win races and hold the solo speed record for circumnavigating the world.

Safety at sea is the No. 1 priority and this thinking is reflected throughout the design and construction of the Rapido.

The Rapido 60 has some truly amazing living spaces which provide more open, private and intimate areas than monohulls or catamarans.

stable and comfortable

Trimarans are comfortable on all points of sail.

The combination of safety, performance and comfort put the Rapido in a league of its own. The enormous trampoline nets add fun and excitement as you watch the blue water rush underneath you – or as you lounge on the nets while gently floating over a reef. You will be instantly hooked..

Trimaran Sailing Yacht Blue Coast 160®

A truly sensational appearance:

This BLUE COAST 160` sailing trimaran mega yacht with 3 decks is a fusion of architecture, design, comfort, performance, luxury, economy and technology. The 48m long carbon fibre trimaran yacht was designed by world-renowned naval architect Jean-Jacques Coste.

Description

The BLUE COAST 160` has extendable side hulls. At sea, the overall width of 23 m then offers very stable sailing even in rougher seas. With the side hulls retracted, the yacht, which is only 11 m wide, finds suitable berths in marinas and harbours. The shallow draft allows anchoring close to the most beautiful beaches.

Read here an article about this stunning trimaran from Multihulls World magazine no. 191.

The energy concept is also revolutionary: all the energy required on board comes from renewable sources. Of course, the latest battery management system (BMS) technology with state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries is part of the overall concept. This means that exclusive ports can be entered with renewable energy. Additional requested energy can be generated by an optional hybrid propulsion system.

The customised luxurious interior design is also by Jean-Jacques Coste. Of course, a garage for the owner's car "matching" the yacht has also been thought of; it can get on and off the yacht via the retractable platform.

With a twinkle in the eye, here is a note on the term "yacht" : At the christening of the new "Brittania" by Queen Elizabeth II, a journalist asked why a vessel of 126 m length with a crew of 236 and 5.769 GRT could be be called a "yacht"? A member of the Royal Family gave him a convincing answer: "The use of the term yacht does not depend on the type, length, weight or size of the crew of a vessel, but on the status of the owner!"

Design according to your preferences

The design of the Blue Coast 160 can be adapted to your ideas as you desire in terms of length, width, number and layout of cabins, interior fittings and furnishings.

Marlin 33 is the multihull of the year 2022

  • Alex Giuzio
  • May 19, 2022

The foldable sailing trimaran Marlin 33 has won the prestigious ‘Best Multihull of 2022’ award, the world’s highest accolade for multihull sailing and motor boats. Awarded in recent days at the International Multihull Boat Show in La Grande Motte, France, the prize was consigned into the hands of the Marlin 33’s designer, Dane Jan Andersen , at a special ceremony.

Mr Andersen is the head of Vision Boats , a small Danish team specializing in the design of multihull yachts that has an established working relationship with Marlin Trimarans. Designer, builder and sailor, with the Marlin 33 Mr Andersen has developed a trimaran for both racing and cruising that combines extreme sailing speed, great comfort and attention to aesthetics. It is one of the fastest trimarans in the world, built entirely in carbon with a set of innovations that have distinguished the work of Marlin Trimarans and Vision Boats, in particular its characteristic of being foldable and thus easily trailerable , but also easily assembled by just two people. The Marlin 33 won over the public at La Grande Motte: not only did the boat come top of the “Sailing Multihulls up to 40 feet” classification, it also received the most votes overall (47.36%) to win the first overall prize as the best multihull of the year, beating all the other boats and yachts in the competition .

marlin-33-transport

As well as offering above-average sailing performance in its category, also thanks to its extreme lightness (the boat weighs just 1460 kilograms ), Marlin 33 has ample space on board to comfortably accommodate an entire family even on long distance cruises, with the saloon measuring 1.95 metres in height, cabins to accommodate six people and a table seating eight. The trimaran is also very easy to steer, offering easy handling and excellent visibility, especially in the two-rudder option. It is equipped with a 450W solar panel to power the Torqeedo electric motor, lights and on-board equipment, making it completely energy autonomous.

Perfect in shallow waters as well as when sailing in archipelagos, bays, fjords and rivers, Marlin 33 finally stands out for the high volume of its side hulls, which guarantee maximum safety even in strong winds while sailing.

Series production of the Marlin 33 has already started at the Elica Yard in Bulgaria.

  • LEEN 56 Power Trimaran

The LEEN 56 power trimaran and her sistership the LEEN 51 and the LEEN 72 are long range cruising multihulls. Experience these capable yachts, embark on transatlantic voyages and discover the world on your own terms.

The revolutionary trimaran shape of the 3 hulls and this yacht’s exceptional weight distribution permits her to reach an unprecedented range of 3000 nautical miles. Experience a range of up to 3000 nautical miles with a single 5000 litre (1,100 gal) fuel tank.

This high latitude capable yacht may only be fueled up once a year. Consequently all LEEN models have a single large diesel engine as main propulsion and electric drives in the outer hulls (amas). This allows for great maneuvering in ports or silent autonomy on just the electric pod-drives.

Hybrid Power Yachts. Long Distance Liveaboard Cruisers

The LEEN range is a true hybrid electric multihull and a large generator acts as an effective charging device in case the main engine fails. With just the electric drives the boat is capable of speeds of up to 5 knots. Consequently this boat is perfect for silent harbor maneuvers. Typical cruising speeds are between 15-18 knots and consumption is a super-low 2l/hour.  Experience fuel efficiency about 10 times less than a power trawler. This eco-friendly power multihull is estimated to be even 30 percent more fuel-efficient than power catamarans!

LEEN 56 Power Trimaran

The LEEN 56 Power Trimaran combines all the advantages of the live-aboard trawler motor yacht. Dynamic appearance, outstanding seaworthiness, and optimized interior volume. This trimaran represents autonomy, long range and explorer yacht attributes.

World Class Design. Experienced  Build Team

Designed by Bernard Nivelt et Pierre Frutschi, these boats are true liveaboard, shorthanded yachts. This power multihull can be easily operated by a husband and wife team. Consequently NEEL and LEEN trimarans offer their full experience of having built more than 2000 multihulls.

Dragonship 80m trimaran superyacht design unveiled by Pi Yachts

Pi Super Yachts has released details on a range of trimaran sailing superyachts, starting with the 80m flagship vessel, the Dragonship 80, an aluminium 80 metre, five-deck, three-masted trimaran yacht.

Pi Yachts commissioned McPherson Yacht Design to develop a new range of sailing trimarans aimed at the luxury end of the yachting market. Starting with the Flagship of the fleet, the brief was to create a style that was elegant and in-tune with what a superyacht client would expect of a vessel of this size, while also maintaining a sporty image.

'We looked for a designer with the imagination and creative flair who would produce a design that would easily convert into a realistic vessel, McPherson Yacht Design has done an incredible job. The yacht will be the flagship of our Dragonship range of trimarans that we propose building over the coming years. The range will consist of the 80 metre, a 50 metre, 35 metre and our baby Dragon at just 25 metres,' says Will O’Hara, Director of Pi Super Yachts.

The rig is highly innovative and cutting-edge, similar to the wing masts recently used on the America’s Cup AC72 yachts. The system is the brainchild of Jack Manners-Spencer who’s been pioneering his Autosail rig since the 1980s. It does away with the use of sheets for control, instead relying upon a powered rotating mast which supports the aerofoil section sail. Two rig options are planned, ‘Sports’ and ‘Cruising', depending upon the client’s wishes.

Her layout was designed to be charter-friendly, accommodating 12 guests in six cabins and supported by a crew of 17. The main and upper decks are dedicated to social areas which will offer excellent views out to sea. Facilities on the main deck will include the saloon, bar, dining room, library, spa and a gym, all encompassed by a wide promenade offering the sheer luxury of space. Outside dining is catered for at the aft end of this deck, while the foredeck is kept clear as a reconfigurable space that can be populated with loose furniture as desired.

The upper deck features the skylounge and has an emphasis on out-door enjoyment. A large exterior bar overlooks the Jacuzzi and spacious sun-pads. This area can also be shielded from the sun by the built-in awning system. Forward of the bridge is another large exterior seating area including a bar/TV cabinet which leads on to open deck space for sun-loungers. Exterior helm stations are located on the fifth, upper-most deck and boast commanding views of the rig and offer clear views out to sea . This deck also provides seating and a bar for guests to share in the thrill of helming this powerful, graceful vessel.

Folding System

Legendary ability, unbeatable reliability.

Folding and unfolding a Corsair trimaran takes only a minute. With just 4 bolts to remove, it is easily managed by one person, and is normally done while afloat. Simply raise (to fold) or press down (to unfold) the inboard end of one cross beam. It can be done from the safety of the cockpit and only a little force is needed due to the folding system’s carefully balanced geometry, and the movement of the floats being mostly horizontal.

The solid aluminium folding struts have absolute control over the folding motion and prevent flexing or racking. A stainless steel bolt on the inboard end of each beam secures the floats for sailing. Crucially, wingnets remain attached during the folding process – their frictionless fixing allows them to tension themselves appropriately through the folding process. The system is so simple and balanced that Corsair trimarans can even be folded while motoring.

TRAILERING ACROSS CONTINENTS

Corsair Marine trimarans are especially weight-conscious, and sit low on their trailers meaning they have excellent trailering characteristics. They are equally easy to launch, giving you more time on the water, and the ability to expore many more remote cruising grounds or participate in regattas far from home. Some Corsair trimaran models go from trailer to water in 25 minutes, and with practice even the largest boat models can be done in 40 minutes.

TOP 3 Best Luxury Sailing Trimarans Neel under 1 Million Euro in 2024

In this article well tell you about 3 best NEEL trimarans in category under one million euro – information, images and comparisons with our personal opinion added to the mix. All three of them are available for purchase at our marketplace – don’t hesitate to ask us any questions if interested in buying one of these beauties.

A sailing trimaran is a vessel with three parallel floats, which are connected to each other at the top. The trimaran is one of the youngest types of sailing yachts that appeared in the 20th century and has been developing rapidly over the past 20-30 years.

They are designed for people who prefer high speed on the water with minimal engine power and fuel consumption. The advantages of these vessels include the combination of a large deck and interior space with simplified navigation and high seaworthiness. They feel great on the wave, providing a smooth ride, and can withstand serious loads.

NEEL Trimarans is one of the most popular brands from France, which has released a number of models of sailing cruising trimarans, has won a large number of prestigious awards, and most importantly, has gained sympathy and high demand from yachtsmen all over the world. Such attention is due to the fact that their boats largely manage to combine the maneuverability and speed of monohulls with the comfort and convenience of catamarans.

[vitrina]1689,1712,1713,1694[/vitrina]

NEEL Trimarans boats owe their futuristic appearance to the talented designer Marc Lombard and designers from La Rochelle, one of the world capitals of shipbuilding with rich experience and traditions. In the article, we intend to consider the available models, their strengths and weaknesses in the stated price category.

NEEL Trimarans 43 is a 12.9 m (42.3 ft) sailing single-masted cruising trimaran, the most compact model of the entire company range with 3 passenger cabins and a rather high draft of 1.5 m (4.9 ft) for a trimaran. The boat has been produced since 2021, and it largely resembles its more massive predecessors in terms of design. The base of the hull is a fiberglass and composite vacuum-sprayed sandwich, using PVC and PET materials and reinforced carbon fiber.

NEEL 43

The design of the 43rd combines a central movable hull, which facilitates maneuvering in port, with streamlined side floats that provide stability and prevent pitching. The side floats are narrow right at the waterline and much more voluminous above the water surface, under the central hull there is a monolithic keel and one rudder. The center hull keel protects the engine block and steering gear.

Designed for high speeds and maneuverability, the NEEL 43 carefully balances weight reduction with sufficient payload capacity for long trip. About 80% of the weight is concentrated in the hull, while the skeg keel helps to better navigate the wind and the large single rudder gives the impression that you are at the helm of a monohull.

NEEL 43

The centralized weight allows the trimaran to operate in a wider range of winds than catamarans, since the three-float Neel 43 can typically lean for about eight degrees, and with a beam of about 7.5 m (24.6 ft), its stability is enormous. The side floats are stretched to provide directional stability and shift the center of buoyancy depending on the load on the mainsail.

Reducing the size of the boat compared to its previous models in no way reduces the appetite of yachtsmen, who want more equipment, more supplies, more water, more fuel, more people on board.

For any multi-hull vessel, weight on board and lack of storage space are real issues and an important part of the equation, but this yacht's designers did a good job and found a way to lighten the hull by several tons and provide a modest displacement of 9 tons and still maintaining to deliver serious trimaran performance.

The sail plan consists of a mainsail and a roller staysail, while an asymmetric spinnaker makes it easier to sail upwind. Mainsail’s sailing area of 59 m2 (635 ft2) and a genoa of 43 m2 (463 ft2) gives us about 17 m2 (183 ft2) per ton, which is a lot. This provides an average cruising speed of about 10 knots, easily allowing you to pass more than 200 nautical miles every day, and when the breeze increases, the speed of the trimaran develops up to impressive 15-18 knots. The rigging is directly borrowed from racing trimarans, which results in a cruising speed that is twice the speed of conventional cruising yachts.

A staircase from the cockpit leads to the skipper's place, and there is also an opportunity to quickly get there from the deck. The only helm and helm station are elevated on the starboard side of the vessel, there are also several additional seats so that the skipper does not get bored alone, and a canopy to protect from bad weather. The bimini has a transparent section at the top so that you can easily observe the condition of the sails.

NEEL 43

This location offers excellent visibility to the entire side of the starboard hull, the stern and the edge of the port float. All sheets and halyards pass through the organizers and converge to the winches at the skipper's post at arm's length.

The interior design of NEEL 43 uses modern lightweight materials. Over the years, NEEL's residential design has evolved. This is especially noticeable aboard the 43, where entering the saloon gives the feel of volume thanks to the 360-degree panoramic views and exceptional lighting.

NEEL 43

The trimarans feature a single living space that includes a bridge, a central galley, a spacious saloon, three double cabins and two bathrooms. Furniture is offered in several modern eco-friendly materials at your choice. The floors are covered in heavy-duty, high-tech woven polyester, available in a wide range of colors.

Headroom in the cabin is about 1.95 meters (10.8 ft). The feeling of spaciousness is provided by large windows on the starboard side and the absence of a bulkhead on the port side. Of course, there is less privacy in the cabins compared to the cabins of a regular 43 ft catamaran. Such a boat is often the choice for family vacations or for friends, who know each other well. The decoration of the premises is quite simple, yet bright and colorful. A relatively compact galley is located on the starboard side, and next to it is the watch seat and navigational instrument panel. There is plenty of storage space.

The owner's cabin is the only one with a traditional door - inside we will find a very bright room, a large bed and a stunning view through the portholes around the cabin. To isolate yourself from the saloon, it is enough to draw the curtains, ventilation is provided through opening hatches. The double cabin in front of the central hull is accessible from the saloon.

NEEL 43

Another cabin on the port side is fully open to the saloon. It is more like just a sleeping place with a large tatami-like bed, which, if necessary, is fenced off with a curtain and can be a great resting place for younger children. Although the NEEL 43 has three double berths, the company says its total capacity can be increased to 10 people as the manufacturer offers as an option to convert the float forepeaks to single berths and change the dining area so that the dining table can be converted into a double bed.

In the cockpit there is a spacious L-shaped dining area with a bar, grill and an additional wide bench facing the stern. Sturdy double sliding doors enclose the saloon, while deep scuppers protect it from water.

NEEL 43

On the sides there are handrails that will secure the way to the bow, where we will find two solar panels located on the roof, which are able to power the on-board electronics and the refrigerator. The bows of the floats are narrow, but so deep that extra berths can be placed there, although in the model that we came across, this area was used for storing fenders. A strong bowsprit extends the center hull to support the bow and anchor, as well as the tack point for the lee sails. And the trampolines here are really huge.

So discerning sailors should look to the high-performance NEEL 43 cruiser since it lives up to its design mission: being a stable and fast boat while offering a comfortable interior.

A year after the launch of the successful NEEL 51 model in 2018, the French shipyard updated the range with the no less successful 47th model. Sailing yacht NEEL Trimaran 47 has been produced by the shipyard since 2019 - it is a sailing cruising trimaran with a length of 14.33 m (45.9 ft) with 3 passenger cabins and a draft of 1.58 m (3.3 ft).

NEEL 47 is easily recognizable among its brothers due to the smooth contours of the hull and the strict superstructure with slightly beveled glazing, making the trimaran look solid, powerful and even to some extent predatory.

NEEL 47

The interiors of the boat are designed in Mediterranean style. The yacht successfully combines the advantages expected from multihull cruising: safety, performance and comfort for a full life on board. The ship has won two Cruising Magazines awards: “2020 Cruise Boat of the Year” and “2020 Multihull of the Year”, proving that it is full of innovation.

The trimaran structure consists of sandwich panels throughout the hull and deck, with an Airex PVC foam core impregnated with vacuum polyester resin between fiberglass skins. The outer layer is coated with vinyl ester resins that help prevent osmosis. To reduce weight, the internal bulkheads and most of the furniture are also made of foam or light cork. The main body and floats are built as a single three-piece unit, which made the structure very rigid. The deck is glued to the hull with a strong aircraft-grade adhesive.

Movement stability is provided by a fixed ballastless keel with foam filler under the main body. The keel and hull are not a single part of a monolithic structure - the keel is specifically attached as a separate part and, according to the plan of the developers, should come off in the event of a strong collision.

NEEL 47

As with catamarans, the wide strut eliminates the need for a backstay, allowing a powerful square head mainsail to be hoisted. In the front triangle, you can use either a genoa or an automatic staysail.

The yacht has received CE (A) certification, which means that the boat is ready for transatlantic crossings and will provide the necessary comfort for the entire company on long autonomous voyages. The design of a trimaran is usually heavier than a catamaran, but due to narrower bridges it is stronger and more stable. This is not the case for the NEEL Trimarans - a 47-foot half-load boat displaces only 10.6 tons. So, it's no surprise that with centered weight and a judicious choice of materials, the boat easily hits 220 nautical miles in 24 hours.

NEEL 47

To provide better visibility, the engineers moved the helm station to a separate elevated section with an excellent view that can be accessed both from the cockpit and from the deck. All the ends were also brought here, so a small crew will cope with the boat just fine. The rudder was very responsive, light and pleasant to the touch, and could be compared to a half-displacement racing monohull.

NEEL 47

On the transom of the yacht there is a place for a dinghy, which is very easy to manage here. Indeed, thanks to remote control and winches, one person can successfully hoist it from the water and secure it firmly when needed. Dinghy does not flap in its place (it is really a very nice touch), it does not need to be additionally tied or somehow strengthened, which for some reason is not common. The aft deck is shielded from the sun by a hardtop that houses multiple solar panels, providing additional power to electrical appliances and saving fuel on a long voyage.

The design of the interior and exterior is called the Cockloon, which means an organic mixture of saloon and cockpit. It sounds a little childish, but the essence is true. The cabin, aft area and saloon are placed on the same level, which is quite convenient, and you never risk falling on the stairs. A wide sliding glass door can be used to divide this space depending on the weather and personal preferences.

NEEL 47

The cockpit is conditionally divided into two recreation areas: a living room with a couple of sofas and a dining room. At the same time, there is a lot of space, and there is still a free passage in the middle, which is not surprising, because the width of the boat is 8.23 m (26.2 ft). The aft cockpit leads directly into the dining area of the saloon on the port side, which is adjacent to the U-shaped galley with two sinks, a refrigerator and a stove.

NEEL 47

A large navigation table is located at the front of the saloon. NEEL 47's sophisticated interior design, combined with exceptional natural light from multiple portholes and skylights, creates a sense of well-being. The vibe of the saloon gives you a feeling of warmth and coziness due to the light Alpi wood in natural beige shades used.

NEEL 47

The owner's cabin on the main deck is certainly unique. This configuration offers breathtaking 270-degree views and thanks to a sliding partition system, the cabin opens easily and harmoniously into the saloon.

Access to the master double cabin is via a very wide doorway that opens directly onto the walkway between the galley and the aft saloon. All living areas of the main hull, including the aft deck, are on the same level, with the exception of the main toilet and shower.

With less usable horizontal space than catamarans, the NEEL 47 uses vertical space very efficiently.

Under the saloon and galley floor there is a very spacious utility room containing fuel and water tanks, plumbing manifolds and AC and DC electrical systems including batteries , but not a generator.

Two guest private cabins are occupying the floats, each with its own ladder leading to the deck. The side windows provide plenty of light and great views with plenty of space under the wide double beds to store luggage and gear. A wardrobe and a shelf for clothes and accessories play more of a decorative role. Each cabin is equipped with its own sink and can also be equipped with a pair of toilets hidden behind a folding boarding ladder and a shower hose on the side.

NEEL 47

To sum it up, the NEEL 47 is an interesting boat with a lot of ingenuity. This is a yacht that will resonate with those yachtsmen who are primarily drawn to the sea looking for the sheer joy of sailing.

The new sailing trimaran is a new concept based on reiteration of the previous experience by the same Marc Lombard, who was also responsible for the design of previous models. The new multihull NEEL 52 replaces the successful cruising NEEL 51.

The trimaran NEEL 52 has some dynamic improvements in its design. Its central oscillating hull and thin and long outer hulls facilitate maneuverability and tacking, greatly increasing stability and sailing performance. The engine and other primary systems are installed in the central hull, and the task of the side floats is to stabilize the trimaran.

NEEL 52

This is a serious issue, since the weak point of many trimarans is poor controllability when maneuvering under the engine at low speed, namely when mooring and especially in bulk wind. The hull is large and wide, the draft is small, the surface part of the hull is voluminous, and there is only one propeller and engine, unlike the catamarans, where there are 2 engines and 2 propellers that allow you to turn the vessel on the spot.

NEEL 52

Nevertheless, NEEL adequately coped with this task. This large trimaran can sail in wind speeds not less than 8 knots. This is a trick that any other multihull with the same dimensions is unlikely to repeat. The trimaran requires minimal power to accelerate, so fuel is consumed sparingly, saving the captain from thinking about refueling for a long time.

The cruise speed of a trimaran with a strong engine in calm weather is 9 knots, which is significantly higher than that of catamarans and monohulls of the same length. But still, the best qualities of a trimaran are discovered while sailing. The cruising speed under sail is 10 knots, and with sufficient wind and skillful settings, the trimaran accelerates up to 15-18 knots, while providing fairly high stability and smoothness.

The sailing systems of the vessel are thought out and arranged in such a way that one person can easily control the boat, reef and maneuver. With its colorful modern silhouette and sleek lines, the boat exudes power, speed, safety and elegance.

NEEL 52

Materials and technologies proven on previous models were used to made the floats:

  • reinforced carbon fiber;
  • composite sandwich;
  • vacuum infusion.

The width of the yacht is 7.9 m (26 ft), half of its total length – 15.8 m (52 ft). It can carry two 600-liter fresh water tanks and accommodate up to 12 passengers.

Trimarans are capable of faster speeds than monohull yachts or similarly sized catamarans. Until recently, boats were used as sports boats capable of reaching high speeds. The vessel is suitable for all cruising programs, including short cruises, long voyages and competitive racing.

But now we can even get a charter version of the vessel with a lot of additional options. You will be able to adjust the number of guest cabins, as well as to control the decoration and arrangement of the interior of the owner's cabin, saloon and cockpit. The trimaran is available in a variety of layouts, including four, five or six cabins, with a choice of an owner's cabin on one level or a huge saloon with an enlarged galley and breakfast bar, as well as one or two crew cabins.

When designing the hulls, the architects also had to take into account the load on long-haul trips, increased fuel consumption, provisions and water, and as a result, the carrying capacity of the NEEL 52 came out to be 19.5 tons.

NEEL 52

NEEL’s trimarans are also known for their unsurpassed handling. This is due to the unique design of the rudder, controlled by textile straps on ball bearing blocks, where the rudder beam is mounted on self-aligning bearings.

The sail plan consists of a mainsail with 3 reefs and a furling staysail on a structural wire inside the sail. The asymmetrical spinnaker makes it easier to sail downwind.

The company offers 2 mounting options to choose from:

  • Conventional rigging where the mast and boom are made of aluminum and the standing rigging is made of stainless-steel wire.
  • High performance rigging where the mast is made of carbon with an aluminum boom and the standing rigging is made of textile, except for the forestay, which remains wire.

The height difference between the two mast versions is 70 cm (2.3 ft).

The helm station is particularly ergonomic thanks to the triple seat and easy access from the cockpit or deck, allowing for easy communication between skipper and crew so the helmsman is not excluded from social life on board. The trimaran's rigging is centralized and is concentrated at the helm station. Reefing, furling and raising sails, as well as tacking, adjusting sails and anchoring, can be done by the skipper without even getting up from the seat.

Two pairs of side steps lead up to the roof from the cockpit and from the helm side, providing easy access to the mast, boom, sun deck and sun lounge. There are secure handrails around this area for safe movement on board. Instead of sun loungers on the roof, there is the option of installing solar panels for additional energy while sailing.

NEEL 52

The entire interior living space, master suite and cockpit are on the same level, highly ergonomic and fully open-plan for exceptional lighting and visibility. The kitchen and chart table are facing forward. The panoramic view from this huge saloon is hard to believe.

NEEL 52

In general, the model looks very promising - the company has absorbed all the previous positive experience and embodied it in the NEEL 52 Trimaran. Hence, first place in our top 3 is well deserved.

To conclude this little research, we want to remind you that you can find any of these models at our website with price calculators, additional files and specifications. If you have any questions regarding these magnificent trimarans, feel free to call or send us message - we will resolve all the arising issues in no time.

A superyacht captain shares 3 things people who want to charter a luxury vessel should know

  • Vacationing on a superyacht may sound like it's all Champagne and sunbathing.
  • But before boarding a luxury vessel, superyacht captain Kelly Gordon advises keeping certain things in mind.
  • Yachting is a summer pastime with risks and nuances for clients and crew.

Insider Today

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez soaking up the sun. Travis Barker and Kourtney Kardashian's wedding . Beyoncé's carefree jump into the ocean.

One of these images is likely what comes to mind when you hear the word "superyacht," a phrase generally used to describe a yacht over 80 feet in length.

While ultra-luxurious vessels are associated with all things carefree, tragic events such as the sinking of the Bayesian superyacht off the coast of Sicily on Monday is a reminder that yachting is a pastime with unique risks and nuances. It's unclear what the protocols were on the Bayesian.

For those keen on the idea of chartering a superyacht, captain Kelly Gordon, 42, told Business Insider there are a number of important factors to consider before hopping on board.

Gordon fell in love with yachting after she stepped aboard a yacht for the first time in her mid-20s.

Hellbent on reaching captain level, Gordon quickly worked her way up the chain of command. She's spent most of her time sailing the Bahamas and the Caribbean and is now based in Florida, where she works as a captain on a 108-foot-long privately owned vessel.

Gordon, who has over 12,600 followers on Instagram , shares three factors to keep in mind before boarding a chartered superyacht.

Think of the process of chartering a superyacht as buying a house

One of the most important things to do when chartering a superyacht is to work with a charter broker, Gordon says.

"The charter manager's job is to No. 1: find you a safe boat," Gordon said, adding that in her experience, "Not all programs put safety as high up on the list as it should be."

She also likes to equate charter brokers to Realtors in that they take on the role of finding you the best option for your taste.

"You find one that you gel with really well and has a good reputation, and then you discuss with them what your budget is, where you want to go, what your activity levels are, what your personalities are like," Gordon said.

Pairing clients with a crew that aligns with their characteristics is a huge part of a charter broker's job, Gordon said.

"If you think about it, you're living with that crew for 24/7, around the clock," she said. "You're not going put someone that just wants to sit and read books all day with a crew that's extremely active."

Find a crew that is competent and prioritizes safety

Charter brokers also help match clients with a competent crew that prioritizes safety.

"I don't know that many people realize just how much their life is in our hands when we cast those lines and we go to sea," Gordon said.

Part of that is having a safety briefing, which Gordon carries out every time she welcomes clients onto a chartered vessel before leaving a dock.

A thorough safety briefing includes informing clients about the location of safety equipment and lifejackets and the procedures for events such as a fire, a person falling overboard, or the boat sinking.

"You should have a safety briefing, and if you don't get one, you should ask for one," Gordon said.

The process, she added, can be different on privately owned yachts, where passengers may be familiar with the vessel.

The Bayesian is a private yacht owned by tech tycoon Mike Lynch; it's not yet known what kind of safety protocols staff and guests were trained on.

Make sure there's a member of the crew on watch 24/7

"A lot of charter guests think when they go to sleep, the crew goes to sleep," Gordon said.

But that shouldn't be the case, she added. "You want to be on a boat knowing that someone's up, because if the weather changes or the anchor starts to drag, you need somebody that's up and ready to go and get everybody else to handle it."

Among the biggest weather risks are tornados, which can be extremely difficult to predict and prepare for whether you're on land or at sea.

"I'm from the Midwest, where tornados pop up," Gordon said. "It's hard to see a tornado coming, and if you do see it coming, the tornado goes where it wants to go."

Most often, that leaves people near the weather event with just minutes to ready themselves, which is even trickier "in the middle of the night."

While rapid changes in weather are tough to contend with, Gordon recommends researching the areas you are sailing in beforehand, like you would when visiting a new country.

"It's no different than if you're going on vacation on land," she said. "You want to know where you're going. Don't put that just all on the crew."

While the research doesn't have to be as extensive as the crew should be doing, it's important to still be "responsible for your own self as well as your family and your guests."
