In a harrowing sea disaster off the Sicilian coast, a luxury yacht christened the Bayesian carrying 22 people capsized during a ferocious tornado .
Rescuers have found one body amid the wreckage while six remain unaccounted for, including two American citizens, a Canadian, four British citizens and a crew member. The ill-fated ship, hoisting the Union Jack, now lies submerged near Porticello village close to Palermo, discovered a mere half-mile from land.
Divers have located one man's body floating near the sunken vessel. Miraculously, emergency teams managed to save 15 people, among them an infant Brit named Sophie, as searches persist for the others initially aboard when the vessel encountered trouble around 5am.

It's understood the boat sank during bad weather as a tornado hit Sicily. Divers have reached the hull at a depth of 49 meters. At 10am local time today, the Italian fire brigade broadcasted: "#Palermo , shipwreck of vessel off the coast of Porticello, 15 people rescued, 7 reported missing: from dawn, divers from the #vigilidelfuoco engaged in the search. Wreck identified at 50 meters depth, speleo divers arriving."
In a follow-up, 90 minutes after the initial report, officials tweeted: "#Palermo, shipwreck of a vessel in Porticello: the lifeless body of a man was recovered by the #divers of the #vigilidelfuoco outside the wreck. The search operations continue with the coordination at sea of the @guardiacostiera."
The doomed vessel carried mainly British nationals, along with individuals from New Zealand, Sri Lanka, two with Anglo-French nationality, and an Irish citizen. Rescue efforts are underway with helicopters scanning for the ship while survivors receive care locally.
This includes a 1-year-old British child, Sophie, who, as a safeguard, has been transported to the Children's Hospital in Palermo with her mother, who suffered minor injuries.
Sophie's mother Charlotte recounted the harrowing ordeal to Giornale di Sicilia: "For two seconds I lost my baby in the sea, then I immediately hugged her again amid the fury of the waves. I held her tightly, close to me, while the sea was stormy. Many were screaming. Luckily the lifeboat inflated and 11 of us managed to get on board," painting a clear picture of the terror they experienced while being tossed about by the unforgiving sea.
Sophie's dad was ushered to the Civic Hospital, and an additional five individuals received care at a makeshift emergency center in Bagheria. Domenico Cipolla, the pediatric hospital's leading emergency official stated, "They are all in a good condition," adding, "We managed to get the parents to talk on the phone, with doctors and nurses all emotional especially with the little girl fine, the outlook is fine and we are carrying out tests only as a precaution."
A number of those affected have found sanctuary at the Domina Zagarella hotel in Santa Flavia. A relieved survivor expressed, "We are safe, we just arrived at the hotel. But we were very scared," according to reports.
To provide support, the mayor of Santa Flavia, Giuseppe D'Agostino, along with several municipal councilors made their way to the hotel. Moreover, other passengers from the ship were accommodated in the nearby town of Termini Imerese.
However, on a more somber note, the Civil Protection of Sicilys chief, Salvo Cocina, revealed to Corriere della Sera chilling accounts of divers witnessing "corpses through the portholes". The ship succumbed to the depths amid challenging marine conditions and it has been reported that the visibly distressed captain will undergo questioning by authorities.
According to eyewitnesses, prior to the capsize due to harsh weather, the vessel was docked at Porticello's harbor. Witnesses reported that the vessel was anchored off the coast of Porticello when a tornado hit, snapping its large sail mast and causing it to capsize. Another anchored boat nearby is said to have come to their aid.
An unsettling image captured just hours before the catastrophe shows the Bayesian peacefully moored in the harbor.
"That vessel was all lit up," a local from Porticello recounted. "At around 4:30 in the morning it was gone. A beautiful vessel where there had been a party. A normal holiday day spent happily at sea turned into a tragedy. The vessel was not far from the port. It would have taken very little to raise the anchor and head for the port. Evidently they were surprised by the storm that suddenly hit and they were unable to avoid the sinking."
As the Coast Guard and firefighters persist in their search efforts, volunteer organizations have joined in at the behest of the Bagheria Carabinieri Station Command. The incident has sparked intense debate on social media, with many questioning the decision to set sail despite weather warnings.
Social media users expressed concern, with one posting on Facebook, "My God, let's hope they find them," while another hoped, "Hopefully they can all be found, God help the civil protection and the law enforcement who are trying to locate them."
Yet, some questioned the judgment of the boat's excursion, with one person asking, "What the hell was this boat doing to us in the middle of the sea in a storm, after all the warnings of the weather?"
A Facebook user captured the grim scene last night, posting: "Last picture I took at 10:00 pm. The yacht on the left sunk at 4:05, caught in the middle of the hurricane 300 meters from the port of Porticello, next to another sailboat that provided rescue. It looks like there are 22 on board but unfortunately 7 missing, feared to be still in the hull. Unbelievable tragedy tonight. I'm out of words."
The Bayesian stands as a testament to luxury maritime engineering, a stunning 56-meter sailing vessel with a hefty gross tonnage of 473 tons. Crafted by the esteemed Perini Navi Viareggio shipyard and gracing the seas since February 2008, this grand dame claimed further glory with a 2020 refit.
The ill-fated boat reported to Porticello following an elegant waltz through Milazzo with a scenic cruise past Cefalu, according to tracking details from Vessel Finder.
Porticello's own Pietro Asciutto, a seasoned fisherman, recounts the chilling moment he witnessed the vessel's demise: "I was at home when the tornado hit. I immediately closed all the windows. Then I saw the boat, it had only one mast, it was very large. I saw it sink suddenly." Moved by curiosity and concern, Asciutto braved the elements and ventured down to Santa Nicolicchia Bay, only to behold the last moments before the yacht succumbed, vanishing beneath the waves.
