How did you get into yachting as a chef?

Prior to the yachting industry I cheffed in restaurants and worked in catering in Australia. I was introduced to the Superyacht Chef industry, when I met my Aussie boyfriend who was also a chef. He had worked on yachts in the Med and The Caribbean. He was keen to return to the yachting industry and invited me to join him.

tales from a luxury yacht chef

What is your formal chef background?

I studied and did my apprenticeship to become a chef in Queensland, Australia.

What are you working on right now?

Due to the Pandemic, I left The Caribbean in April 2020 and returned to Australia. I have joined forces with 3 super yachts based in Queensland and Sydney. We do day trips. I have created an “ Indulgence yacht experience” – they get to join me for an onboard cooking workshop plus spa services and live Jazz or Classical music.

I also do land-based catering plus cooking workshops in my commercial kitchen. Also, live online cooking workshops that are held globally and I also go to people’s homes and teach cooking workshops there.

Interestingly, I have a cookbook that will be available globally in November – Fine Dining Made Easy, Galley Gourmet With Chef Lisa Mead, it can be ordered from my website –  www.lisamead.com  or via Amazon.

I also hold speaking engagements, that include a live cooking workshop. This is where I chat to the audience about what it’s like to work on a Superyacht and all of the adventures I have had along the way. Some of these include producing and hosting my own cooking tv show for 7 years which aired in the US, Canada and The Caribbean. It was filmed on location in the British Virgin Islands.

I have also recently created my own Podcast – TALES FROM A LUXURY YACHT CHEF – Where I chat to people connected to the global yachting industry. It has been going really well and there has been lots of positive feedback.

Like a lot of chefs, I am also an artist. I have been exhibiting my paintings for the past 25 years, since moving back to Australia. My label is Lisa Mead Designs, where I have a variety of lifestyle products with my original designs – you can check them out via my Instagram page – Lisa Mead Designs.

What are some of the biggest difficulties working as a sole chef?

I often find that the weather conditions can be difficult as it is often unpredictable. Also, keeping track of special diets and tastes of my guest and crew. Staying energised can also sometimes be a challenge as a yacht chef in the middle of a busy season.

What does a normal day look like for you as a yacht chef?

5:00 am start, prepping as much as possible for the day ahead, sorting out made-to-order breakfast for the guests, getting crew breakfast out early.

Checking in with the Steward or guests on the planned menu for the day. Followed by prepping for lunches, Apps, and multi-course dinners. Finally, I can sanitise and clean the galley at the end of the night, possibly prep for meals for the following day, and sleep!

tales from a luxury yacht chef

What are some of the most inspiring destinations you have travelled to as a chef on yachts?

Sardinia, Amalfi Coast, Malta, Balearic  Islands, South of France, BVI, Spanish Virgin Islands, French West Indies, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Whitsundays off the coast of Queensland, Australia.

tales from a luxury yacht chef

What has been the most exciting part of working in the yachting industry?

Being able to tailor-make menus to suit the exact taste of your guests and seeing their reaction to your meals. Travelling to amazing anchorages all around the world and meeting guests and crew that end up becoming lifelong friends.

tales from a luxury yacht chef

What has been the most challenging thing so far in your yacht chef career?

I was based in the British Virgin Islands when Hurricane Irma and Maria hit, we went through the eye of the storm. I have been through a few cat 5 Hurricanes, but they say this was about a 7. Sadly, I lost my apartment and everything I owned that was in it on Tortola, as did many people in the BVI.

The yacht that I had been cheffing on, sank.

tales from a luxury yacht chef

How is life on board different to working in restaurants?

On land, you have staff to assist you. You have to be able to cover some of those jobs yourself on board a yacht. Understanding that you don’t have access to shops 24/7, you may need to adjust your menu according to rough weather conditions. Also, you are living with your guests for a week or more.

tales from a luxury yacht chef

What advice do you have for new chefs coming into the industry?

Make sure that you can handle being away from friends and family. You also need to be outgoing. It’s important to make sure you get all the correct certificates required.

Before joining a yacht – do your homework on the boat, if it charters, how busy is it for the season, and what are the crew and owners like?

tales from a luxury yacht chef

What are your favourite dishes to make?

Since I am currently in Australia, I have been doing lots of cooking workshops using native Australian bush flavours and proteins such as lemon myrtle, finger lime, Davidson plum plus crocodile tail, emu and kangaroo.

Where do you get your inspiration for dishes, ingredients or plating?

I love looking at Superyacht Chef Instagram page , as well as Pinterest and other cooking sites.

tales from a luxury yacht chef

Have you entered any chef competitions?

Yes, I have entered 3 of the British Virgin Islands, Yacht Chef cooking Competitions and won all 3 times for my dishes. I was pretty nervous but excited.

Cause of Death Determined for 'One-of-a-Kind' Chef Aboard Luxury Yacht That Sank in Sicily, Sources Say

Recaldo Thomas “was a one-of-a kind special human being," a friend said

The cause of death for chef Recaldo Thomas, the first person found dead after the Bayesian yacht sank off the coast of Sicily last month , has been determined, PEOPLE confirms.

Thomas died of drowning after the 183-foot boat sank following a severe storm on Aug. 19 , according to sources close to the ongoing investigation.

His body was recovered outside the vessel not long after the yacht went into the water, and sources say he had seawater in his lungs.

The chef was one of seven victims in the sinking, Italian authorities have said. Twenty-two people were onboard the Bayesian — 12 passengers and 10 crew — at the time. Fifteen of them were subsequently rescued.

The victims included Thomas as well as Chairman of Morgan Stanley International Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy Bloomer ; New York City-based lawyer  Christopher Morvillo and his wife , jewelry designer Neda Morvillo; and British tech businessman  Mike Lynch and his daughter Hannah .

While Thomas drowned, testing is ongoing to determine if the six other victims, who were found inside the Bayesian after it sank, may have suffocated because an air bubble they were in ran out of oxygen and filled with carbon dioxide, PEOPLE previously reported.

Thomas' friends have mourned him since the tragedy.

One friend previously told  The Independent  that he “was a one-of-a kind special human being.”

Eli Fuller, another friend, told the BBC that the chef was somebody young children from his native Antigua looked up to.

"He was sought after," Fuller said. "The kids would see all these white people working on yachts. For them to see an Antiguan man traveling all over the world — it was important for our community."

Related: Acquitted of Fraud, Mike Lynch Was Elated but 'Struggling to Accept' New Reality Before Yacht Sinking, Reporter Says

Gareth Williams, who had known Thomas for 30 years, said that Thomas lived in Antigua during the yachting off-season and worked in part to help his parents, the BBC reported.

"He told me just the other day that he needed to work two more seasons to fix up his late parents' house," Williams said. "He loved yachting, but he was tired."

A source close to the survivors previously confirmed to PEOPLE that Mike Lynch and the other passengers on the Bayesian had been celebrating with family and friends following Lynch's acquittal from a U.S. fraud trial in June.

Related: Victims of Sicily Yacht Tragedy Formally Identified, Authorities Say Some Were Searching for Air Pockets in Final Moments

In the wake of the sinking, James Cutfield, the yacht's captain, and two crew members have been questioned by Italian authorities.

Authorities also opened a manslaughter and negligent shipwreck  investigation in connection with the sinking, but no one has been charged or accused of a crime.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Exes Daisy Kelliher and Gary King Have Explosive Reunion in Season 5 Trailer

Below deck sailing yacht 's daisy kelliher confronts "pr--k" gary king following their failed boatmance in e news' exclusive first look at season five. plus, meet the new yachties..

Below Deck Sailing Yacht 's new season will be anything but smooth sailing.

That's because returning costars Daisy Kelliher and Gary King are anything but friendly after their failed boatmance in E! News' exclusive first look at the Bravo series' fifth season.

Following Daisy, Gary and BDSY alum Colin MacRae 's messy love triangle , Daisy is still reeling from the complicated and dramatic fallout from last season.

"Going into this season, I got rid of some dead weight," the newly single Chief Stew says in the trailer. "The breakup did a number on me last year. I felt very broken. But now, I'm coming back in more focused, full of energy and I'm f--king good at my job. And I'm taking back the reigns."

Despite her initial confidence about returning to the Parsifal III , Daisy adds, "It's gonna be a s--t show."

Cut to the Ireland native yelling at Gary, "Guess what? We have a f--king job to do and I'm not f--king carrying this season on my own, you f--king pr--k!"

But luckily for Daisy, the preview teases her quickly moving on with new Deckhand Keith Allen , who tells Gary, "Daisy would make a very good wife. No?"

As for Gary's response, he bursts out laughing at the crewmember's declaration.

However, Daisy feels the same about Keith and tells him, "You're the kind of person I've never met before."

And when it comes to this season's charter guests, the yachties have too much of a good time with one group on shore.

After a night out, Captain Glenn Shephard warns the team, "You guys went out with some guests, I set some ground rules. Two drinks maximum. You knew the rules, you broke the f--king rules, and now you're here getting upset."

Check out the trailer above for a preview of all the drama to come. And keep reading to meet new yachties Chef Cloyce Martin , Chief Engineer Davide Morosi , Stews Diana Cruz and Danni Warren and Deckhand Emma Crouch .

Below Deck Sailing Yacht premieres Monday, Oct. 7, at 9 p.m.   on Bravo. Episodes will be available to stream next day on Peacock.

Captain Glenn Shephard

Capt. Glenn and his expert crew set sail on Parsifal III to the luxury party capital of the world, Ibiza. While Ibiza is known for its sunny day parties and crystal-clear coast, it’s stormy waters ahead for the crew as they navigate blossoming boatmances, competitive co-workers and tense personal dynamics, all while trying to raise the bar every charter.

Chief Stew Daisy Kelliher

After a distracting love triangle last season that took her focus away from work, Daisy is ready to take the reins back in the interior department with a new sense of energy and determination. However, plans for a stress-free charter season are threatened when her stews question her leadership.

First Mate Gary King

On deck, Gary attempts to keep his team motivated as one crew member struggles to learn the ropes.

Chef Cloyce Martin

In the galley, Chef Cloyce charms the crew and guests but at only 22, he may be too inexperienced to meet the demands of the high-maintenance charter guests.

Chief Engineer Davide Morosi

(E!, Bravo ad Peacock are all part of the NBCUniversal family)

I took a $13,000 pay cut to work as a deckhand on a superyacht. I don't regret it as it gave me a career I can grow in.

  • Nathan Marx was a quality controller in South Africa but decided to switch to becoming a superyacht deckhand.
  • Marx said the job has more growth potential than his previous job and helped him develop more meaningful relationships.
  • Working around the wealthy has shown Marx that success is attainable and wealth doesn't change people's core natures.

Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Nathan Marx, a deckhand for a superyacht. It has been edited for length and clarity.

From 2020 to the end of 2023, I was a quality controller at an engineering company that made mining machinery in South Africa, I managed 132 employees and earned 3,000 euros, around $3,333 a month.

My future was pretty secure at the company, but I lacked that sense of adventure and felt like there was more to life than working away every day and not seeing the world as I would like.

I knew some friends who had entered the yachting industry since leaving school, and it looked very intriguing and adventurous.

My previous job had long hours and was hard work, which made me comfortable stepping into the yachting industry.

When I started working on deckhand certification courses in January this year, I was told about these massive yachting hubs where it'd be easier to find work opportunities because they were saturated with boats.

Related stories

One of those was Antibes, France. I moved there in May this year and traveled the entire coastline of the south of France, dock walking daily, exploring the vessels, and putting myself out there to catch the right opportunity.

I started documenting my job search on TikTok on the day I left for France. I was very nervous that I didn't have a job yet, and I wanted to stand out and get a step ahead in my job search. I love expressing myself through video creation, so the two went hand in hand.

I met this girl who works on this vessel docked in Monaco for the season. She saw my videos, and we got to know each other. I was the first person she contacted when they needed a deckhand. So it's all about getting in front of the right people's eyes.

My role on the yacht is to ensure the boat's exterior is pristine. Everything regarding the exterior, from the hull to the deck, to any furniture outside, is my responsibility to ensure that it is presentable for guests. I also help with basic watchkeeping when the yacht is out at sea.

Now, three months in, I'm at the bottom of the food chain and I'm earning 1,000 euros less every month than I did back in South Africa. But this career has room for growth and will keep me above the ceiling that I reached in South Africa in my management job.

One thing I realized working on yachts is that you live in the same space as your coworkers. If something bothers you about a person and you keep quiet, it builds within you and just sours the relationship on board. You have to foster a relationship with them that is a lot more fruitful than a normal employee would.

I think I also value that because not only am I getting to travel or experience all these crazy things that normal people in a 9-to-5 usually won't, but I'm also meeting people and creating connections with them that'll last a lifetime instead. That real connection with people also gives me satisfaction.

Having a life outside this industry might be challenging because anything can happen at the last minute. You might have time to spare one moment, but you're expecting guests the next, and you're suddenly back to work for a week. So whatever you have planned just needs to fall on the back burner.

But the maritime industry here sets out work-life balance very well, and I think that's also one of the things that drew me to the yachting industry because my previous job did not value my personal life. So, after the hard work, I get a lot of off time, and I have time to go and experience things and step off.

One of my favorite places I visited was Corsica, France, a beautiful little town on a hill with an absurd history. We also had the privilege of hiking up into the old city, an amazing experience I don't think I would've had otherwise if I wasn't into the yachting industry.

I once spoke to a person who's been in the industry for around nine years. He told me about chartering Will Smith and all these big A-list star names, which sounded so enticing. I haven't had any of those or any experiences like that, but the individuals we meet on this boat are very high-net-worth because renting the vessel I work on costs about 78,000 euros a week.

We once had a client with 3.2 million Instagram followers on board and had a normal conversation with her. It was humbling to me because you always think these people will be different or special in some way, but at the end of the day, they're just normal people. She never mentioned anything about her success once. It was so normal that I was surprised.

It's very motivating to be surrounded by individuals like that because they make you feel that their success is possible for you, too.

The superyacht industry is unlike other luxury sectors. The places people visit are so unique that not everyone gets to see them. The cost involved is also quite exorbitant, with some yachts going for 500,000 euros a week. So, the client has a level of expectation of luxury they want to receive, and you have to live up to very high standards that no other luxury industry has.

My career can progress from here in many ways, and I'm trying to explore all those avenues. But the yachting industry is a tight-knit community that's made me very happy over the past few months, so I'll stay for as long as possible.
