Have you ever been sleeping on a boat before? And we don't mean just a casual nap in the sun. When you charter a yacht for your holiday getaway, you can skip the overcrowded and overpriced hotels by spending the night aboard your very own home-at-sea.

Not sure if spending the night on a boat is really your style? When you book a private yacht charter, there are enough different choices to suit everyone's unique style of travel—from elegant, five-star accommodations to casual, do-it-yourself adventure.

Get ready for sleeping on a yacht rental overnight with our Ultimate Overnight Boating Guide:

Why sleep aboard?

How to sleep on a boat, what our overnight yacht rentals can offer you.

If it's your first time considering sleeping on a boat overnight, then you might be wary of getting started. We get it. But whether you're looking for a boat for camping or a boat for luxuriating between beach trips, the best overnight accommodations is your yacht. Here's why:

Get an early start to your day

If you're spending the night in a hotel, then setting sail early in the morning means you have to hit the ground running. You've got to wake up early enough to assemble your gear at the hotel and spend time physically getting to the docks—all before the rest of the crowds do.

But when you spend the night aboard your boat, you're ready to go from the moment you get out of bed. This spells less time wasted trying to get to your destination and more time on the open water enjoying your holiday.

Enjoy more amenities at a cheaper price

Sleeping on a boat overnight doesn’t just save you time—it also saves you money! After all, you're already chartering a boat for your holiday, so why add additional hotel (and travel) fees to the mix?

And while spending the night aboard your yacht is cheaper than staying in a hotel, it can actually be more luxurious. Why shell out the cash for a hotel room with a waterfront view when you can enjoy your own on-the-water view from your private yacht charter?

Settle in with all your luggage

With views that can't be beat and a nonexistent hotel bill, sleeping on a yacht rental overnight is one of the biggest insider tips from pro-travelers—and at the end of the day, it’s just more comfortable, too.

As you sail from one hot locale to the next, why would you want to keep unpacking and packing your bags at every different hotel you have to check into? When you decide to sleep on your yacht overnight, you can fully settle in for your holiday. This means you won't have to worry about forgetting anything in hotels, and you won't have to waste time going back and forth between hotels and your yacht. Instead, you can truly get comfortable and make your cabin your cozy home-away-from-home for your holiday.

Escape loud neighbors and street noise

Perhaps the number one reason for sleeping on a boat during your holiday is to skip out on the crowds, the loud neighbors, and the street noise.

When you charter your own yacht, you can truly enjoy a tranquil getaway, where the gentle sound of the waves can lull you to sleep at night—not your annoying neighbors in the hotel who won’t stop partying. For a relaxing holiday that's peaceful and calm, sleeping aboard your boat can't be beat.

Sold on spending the night sleeping on your yacht rental? Get ready for a good night's sleep with our boat camping tips:

Make sure you're well anchored

It might go without saying, but if you're going to be sleeping on a boat overnight, make sure that you're well anchored before you're ready to get under the covers, so you don't drift during the night. (No matter how adventurous you are, no one wants to wake up the next morning somewhere unknown out at sea!)

Don't forget extra layers

Even if you're sailing in a warm climate, like the Mediterranean or the Caribbean, it's a good idea to bring some extra layers with you. At night, your body temperature will naturally drop, which can make you feel cold while sleeping, so make sure you pack an extra sweater and socks to stay cozy at night.

If it's your first time sleeping on a boat, you may be feeling a little uneasy, as it's a new and unusual experience. Try to remember that sleeping on a boat is just like sleeping anywhere else. It also helps to maintain your normal pre-sleep routine (like having a cup of tea, reading, etc.), so your body knows it's time to get to sleep.

We also recommend bringing earplugs in case the splashing water or creakings from the boat distract you at night.

At Yacht4less, we know not everyone's idea of a dream holiday is the same, which is why we offer a host of different yachts for charter, so you can find the perfect match for your tip. Here's what some of our yacht rentals can offer you:

Fully-crewed yacht

Looking for five-star luxury? We deliver with a fully-crewed yacht .

This kind of charter comes staffed with a captain, hostess, and private chef. Imagine waking up after spending the night on your boat with a gourmet breakfast prepared to your liking by a private chef. No need to go to a restaurant—instead, enjoy your custom meal on the deck of your private boat with the view of the sunrise.

By the cabin

Want the feel of that five-star luxury with a smaller price tag? We have options. Charter a yacht by the cabin .

With a by-the-cabin yacht charter, you're booking a cabin aboard a yacht, much like booking a room in a hotel or on a cruise ship. You'll still enjoy a private room and bathroom, and you'll have free range of the common spaces, such as the kitchen, living room, and deck. This is also a great choice for those who like the more social atmosphere of a hotel.

Are you really looking for a boat for camping? It's time to go bareboat !

Bareboat is for those who want to be the captain of their own vessel, chartering a fully-equipped yacht to sail without the assistance of a skipper. If you're an experienced sailor, this is a great way to enjoy maximum freedom and privacy while you spend the night aboard a private yacht.

Need something a little more stripped down, but don't know how to sail? Choose a skippered yacht charter .

With a skippered yacht, you can enjoy sailing and sleeping aboard a boat stress-free with a private skipper who's at the helm to take care of the legwork. An added bonus is that you can stay at unique anchorages and bays that you wouldn't have access to on a bareboat, as they're only open to a crew with expertise.

Sleeping on a yacht rental overnight takes a sailing holiday to the next level.

Testimonials

I have attended several events on the Yacht Justine. The plush furnishings and careful interior layout produce an atmosphere that is both elegant and intimate. Clean, comfortable, and spacious. A truly memorable way to experience the New York harbor.

Mike Mallner

We spent the first night of our honeymoon on Yacht Justine. It was the ten year anniversary of 9/11, and the tour around lower Manhattan was sobering and reflective, but also heart-stoppingly beautiful. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to celebrate our country and one of its greatest cities, and made the first day of our marriage magic and memorable. The accommodations were also very chic and comfortable, preparing us for the five-star resorts we had booked for the rest of our honeymoon. On top of spending the night in luxurious accommodations, we got a kick out of the novelty of knowing we were on a boat. All in all, it was a cherished experience, and one we would recommend to anyone looking for a truly special night.

Rachel Darwin , Communications Manager at Taft and Partners

Justine is beautiful, outside and in; and her crew is tremendous. I have been on many leisure trips on New York waterways on all types of boats from rustic sailboats to cruise ships, and can say that the aesthetic and ethos of one's immediate surroundings greatly impacts the experience. The elegant look of Justine, and the friendly unpretentious feel of her crew has been the number one factor in my enjoyment.

Sidney Oolongo , Events Coordinator

I had the great pleasure of coming aboard Yacht Justine for a cruise on NYE. Justine is a beautiful vessel and the staff was extremely accommodating and nice. I was very impressed by how attentive the staff was and all their efforts to make sure that I enjoyed my time aboard Justine. I will definitely book another cruise in the near future. If you are looking for a classy retreat from the city in the company of an incredible staff, this is where you want to be.

Samantha Hodges

YACHT CHARTERS

Q What is different about your company?

Although everything that floats in New York City is marketed as a "luxury private yacht," Zenith actually owns and operates high-end, beautifully maintained yachts. Our photos, videos, and TV clips are accurate. For ten years, Zenith has served a global elite of CEOs, celebrities, and VIPs from the highest echelons of power. We are the top of the market. We encourage you to visit and see the yachts you are interested in yourselves, and compare. Please ask any local charter agent about our reputation.

Q Who will be on the yacht with us?

All cruises will have a minimum of three crewmembers aboard to assure your safe and enjoyable cruise. A Captain will helm the yacht at all times. All of our captains bring a lifetime of experience and are happy to answer questions and share stories. Two mates will assure safe docking and while aboard will assist guests with comfort, food, and beverages. Cruises booked with a private chef, bartender, or NYC tourguide will have these in addition.

Q Justine is a huge yacht! What is up with the 12 guest limit??

It's the law! The Justine is a private yacht. Under federal regulations any private boat taking paying passengers is only allowed SIX GUESTS, or TWELVE GUESTS for much larger boats – like the Justine - generally over 80 ft long. There are no exceptions; no passenger can be a "friend" or "crewmember" other than paid staff such as your event photographer, tourguide, or wedding officiant. Children do count as passengers. Our company is fully licensed and insured to take guests in a safe and compliant manner. We have been in business over 10 years. Charterers should be VERY wary of any operator telling you to put down excess passengers as "crew" or offering a "bareboat" contract in which the guests claim to be hiring the crew and taking liability for the cruise. None of that is legal nor insured. The Juliette is a unique vessel in NYC - an actual private luxury yacht which has been upgraded to meet Coast Guard commercial standards and legal for up to 40 guests. It still offers a private yacht look and feel.

Q I represent a client who has special security and privacy concerns.

We have broad experience in handling these concerns. All of our guests are entitled to 100% privacy and discretion. We never share any guest information. Crew do not carry phones or cameras. Private and diplomatic security personnel are welcome to travel with guests. Please contact us with any specific concerns or NDA's.

Q What can I bring?

Comfortable shoes and clothing and non-spray sunscreen. Cameras, phones, chargers. We will have towels, ice, and nonalcoholic beverages for every cruise. High heels and shoes with hard black soles are not allowed. Please do not bring any pollution hazards such as confetti, glitter, or streamers; fire hazards such as sparklers. hookahs, fireworks, or sternos; messy food items such as stews, soups, curries, chicken wings, ice cream cakes, bloody mary's, etc.

Q Can we bring children?

Yes, you are welcome to bring your children - HOWEVER they must be under constant adult supervision. We highly recommend bringing your nanny.

Q Can we bring pets?

We do not permit any pets aboard, other than authorized service animals assisting guests with a disability. We love furry guests but keep in mind they get scared, confused, and seasick on yachts.

Q Is there Wi-Fi?

No, but cell phones and streaming data will work throughout all of our routes.

Q What is the music situation?

Both yachts have speakers on all decks. Stereo systems play XM/Sirius radio or guests can Bluetooth their favorite music. You can bring a DJ with their own equipment as well.

Q Do I have to remove shoes aboard?

We do allow guests to wear their shoes aboard. We recommend comfortable options such as sandals or sneakers. High heels and mens' dress shoes with hard black soles are not permitted.

Q Are any parts of the yacht off-limits?

Guests are not allowed into the engine room or other clearly-marked restricted areas. However, anyone who wants an educational tour of the engines and machinery of the yacht is welcome to request this of the captain before or after a cruise. Staterooms with attached bathrooms are available on both yachts for private conversations, changing, hair/makeup, etc.

Q Where do you sail from? Where do you go?

Our home dock is Newport a private and upscale marina in the heart of the Jersey City Waterfront. It is located directly across the Holland Tunnel from Manhattan with PATH Train and garage parking onsite. We can pickup and dropoff guests at Chelsea Piers, North Cove (World Financial District), Dyckman Marina in uptown Manahttan, Liberty State Park (Jersey City), and One15 downtown Brooklyn Marina for varying fees. We can also serve the Hudson River Valley, Long Island, Connecticut and the Hamptons. Our typical 3 cruise covers all of Manhattan's iconic skyline, including the Empire State Building, Freedom Tower, Intrepid, Brooklyn Bridge, Ellis Island, and a close-up at the Statue of Liberty. Full day cruises can explore the Northern Hudson Valley, Sandy Hook, or Long Island Sound. The Hamptons, Montauk, Mystic, Newport RI, and Block Island require multiday bookings.

Q Which times/dates are available or recommended?

All of our cruises are custom and yachts are available any time, any day. Holidays and weekends are generally booked early. Some guests prefer spending all day under the sun, others prefer watching the city lights from the comfort of a private yacht at night. The most popular option is to book during sunset, 6-9pm or 7-10pm to experience daylight, sunset, and a bit of NYC after dark.

Q What if the weather is bad?

If the weather is unsafe to sail, we offer a no-fee rescheduling or if no mutually agreeable date is available, full refund. If the weather is not perfect but not unsafe (i.e. rain) we do our best to accommodate all guest requests. It is our goal to provide the best experience possible and in these situations we will try to work with you and see if better times/dates are available. The yacht interior is climate controlled and we do sail in rain. The contract does not provide for no-fee rescheduling or refund for inclement weather but we try to work with everyone to come up with mutually agreeable solutions.

Q I see the same boats listed everywhere? Where should I book this?

Our pricing is standardized and you should feel comfortable booking with any authorized agent or broker, or directly. Online "Airbnb"-style booking services may levy additional fees.

Q How do we pay for a cruise?

We take deposits on credit cards to reserve dates and expect the balance to be paid online via Zelle/ACH/"E-check". We also accept wires, bitcoin, cash, and company or bank checks.

Q What discounts do you offer?

Our pricing is based upon the substantial overhead costs of maintaining and professionally staffing multimillion dollar private yachts. We cut no corners and provide luxury service. Generally speaking, we do not offer discounts. We offer an experience which is often less expensive yet vastly superior to private service at exclusive Manhattan landside venues.

Q What is a customary tip?

Tips for hardworking crew are not included unless specifically added in advance. Tipping is appreciated and customary at the end of your cruise for an amazing experience. One tip for the entire crew, recommended at 18% of total charter fee, can be handed to the Captain and will be split evenly among the crew. Cash is preferred but credit cards, Zelle, and Venmo are also accepted.

Q I am an influencer! Please give me a free cruise so I can post photos of your yacht and get you tons of business!

Thank you but pass.

Q Are we allowed to swim from the yacht?

New York Harbor and the Hudson River have fast currents and heavy boat traffic and are NOT safe for swimming. We do permit swimming from the Justine yacht only, as part of full-day or overnight cruises. We will take you to a more protected area such as Croton, Coney Island, Manhasset Bay, or Sandy Hook. There is no swimming from the Juliette yacht, or as part of any half-day cruise.

Q Can I fly my drone?

We allow guests who wish to take a drone photo or video to do so from a dock only, either before or after the cruise. Any aerial videography from a moving yacht MUST be discussed and cleared with management well in advance (not during boarding). We must discuss homepoint settings, EMF interference, and have insurance and a damage deposit on file.

Q Are there any kayaks, jetskis, etc?

We operate primarily in New York Harbor, which is not a safe place for kayaking, wakeboarding, etc. We can bring water toys upon request for overnight or fullday charters leaving the metro area. Any jetskis require coordination with a third party rental company, which requires advanced planning.

Q Can we film aboard?

You are welcome to photograph/film and share whatever you like. Commercial film and photo shoots should be aware that we do not require permits to film aboard but marinas and docks will require permits for dockside filming. Our crew can help with layouts, positioning, and recommend locations and angles. All commercial film and photoshoots are subject to a $1250/hr flat fee, 4 hour minimum, with a credit card on file for overtime. We can assist with chase boats. Staterooms are available for monitors, hair/makeup/wardrobe, etc.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Q What are your policies regarding masks and the Coronavirus?

We will fully comply with state and federal regulations which apply. Our guests are not currently required to mask and social distance aboard during the 2023 season.

Q Am I allowed to smoke on the yacht?

Smoking and Vaping is permitted on outside decks only. Ashtrays will be provided. Guests are not allowed to bring any smoking device with hot coals, such as hookahs, which present a fire hazard.

Q Are you Handicap-accessible?

No , these yachts are not ADA-compliant. All guests must ascend stairs to board and to access the top deck. However, we have hosted many guests with limited mobility, who board with the assistance of crew and family members. Please contact us with any specific concerns or requirements.

Q Will I be seasick?

New York Harbor generally is fairly calm although waves can be made by criss-crossing ferries. If you are prone to seasickness we recommend taking an over-the-counter medication such as Dramamine one hour in advance, not drinking alcohol, and spending time on outside decks. Crew cannot dispense medications.

Oahu Overnight Charters  allow you to escape city life for the tranquil and tropical waters surrounding Hawaii and sail off to the Gathering Place’s more discreet island locations.

Whether you want an authentic Hawaiian sailing adventure or you want to combine sailing with other excursions, your Captain can make it happen.

Oahu 2 Days, 2 Nights A great way to start or finish a vacation in Hawaii. For those arriving with late flights and a busy schedule.

First Night:  Stay aboard the yacht at Ko’olina resort. This is a beautiful resort on Oahu’s west side. A crewman meets you on board to get settled then leaves you for the night. You can catch the luau at the hotel, fine dining awaits, or if you want something special on the boat just let us know.

Day 1:West Oahu  We get a late start and sail offshore, then tack back in to the lee of the Wainae mountain range at Makaha where we stop for lunch and snorkeling. After lunch, we sail to Pokai bay, our destination for the night.

Day 2: West Oahu  We get a late start and sail close to shore working our way back to Ko’olina resort to disembark. The calm seas and gentle breeze will leave you wondering why you didn’t book a longer charter.

Oahu Overnight Charter – 3 Days

Day 1: West and North Shores of Oahu  Depart from Ko’olina resort, the newest luxury resort on Oahu’s beautiful west side. Sail in the lee of the Waianae mountain range. We stop for lunch at Yokohama Bay, then head to Haleiwa for the night. Haleiwa is a historical town that blends old Hawaii with new. It has a relaxed country atmosphere, which is very different from the pace of Waikiki.

Day 2: Waimea Bay  We get a late start and set sail down the coast to Waimea Bay. Waimea is a beautiful location that is a sacred place in Hawaiian folklore. Once home to one of Oahu’s largest indigenous populations, today it is the home of the largest wave contest. For obvious reasons we only anchor here in the summer months when the surf is down. Go ashore and explore the sea caves, take in a show at the waterfall, or relax on the beach and watch the sunset.

Day 3: Return to Ko’olina  We get an early start and sail a different tack back around Kaena point and stop for lunch and a swim along the way. This day is a downwind run and you get a chance to sail in the trade winds. The fishing is great off the coast and we try our best to catch a big one. We arrive late in the day back at Ko’olina resort.

Oahu Overnight Charter – 4 Days (5th Day Option)*

Day 1: West and North Shores of Oahu  Depart from Ko’olina resort, the newest luxury resort on Oahu’s beautiful west side. We sail in the lee of the Waianae mountain range and stop for lunch at Yokohama Bay, then head around Kaena point to Waimea for the night. Waimea is a beautiful location that is a sacred place in Hawaiian folklore. Once home to one of Oahu’s largest indigenous populations, today it is the home of the largest wave contest. For obvious reasons we only anchor here when the surf is down. Go ashore and explore the sea caves, take in a show at the waterfall, or relax on the beach and watch the sunset.

Day 2: Kaneohe Bay  We get an early start and set sail along the north shore for Kaneohe Bay. The island looks decidedly different on this side, much more like French Polynesia with a barrier reef and sharp mountain ridges. Look deep into lush green valleys and try to count the waterfalls. The destination for the day is Kaneohe Bay. A beautiful location, we anchor on an island made entirely of sand that comes and goes with the tide.

Day 4: Honolulu  We get an early start, sail through Kaneohe Bay and back into the Pacific. We sail past numerous small offshore islets teeming with wild tropical seabirds, and an abundance of sea life, whales, dolphins, and turtles. We round Makapu’u point and pick up the trade winds for a fast sail back to Diamond Head and anchor off Waikiki for the night. The city lights are great at night and if we are there on a Friday, there‘s even a fireworks show.

Day 5: Pearl Harbor  We get a late start and sail past Honolulu and down the main channel of Pearl Harbor. It is quite remarkable to sail into this infamous harbor and see the landmarks from history. We stop for lunch before heading back to sea and our destination at Ko’olina.

*Day 6: Same as above with two days in Kaneohe Bay  Spend an extra day to sail and explore this beautiful bay, kayak to Coconut (Gilligan’s) Island, wait for the tide to cover up Sand Island, swim and snorkel, or just relax and enjoy.

Kauai Itinerary for Inter-Island Sail from Oahu to Kauai:

Day 1: Sailing by the stars

Depart from Honolulu in the afternoon and sail by the setting sun towards the western tip of Oahu in the lee of the Waianae mountain range. Sail past Pearl Harbor, Makaha, and the beautiful west side of the island, while enjoying a light dinner on the way to Kaena Point. Once past Kaena Point the channel opens up to Kaui and get ready for 60 miles of downwind sailing by the stars (it doesn’t get much better than this). By morning, the approach is made to Kauai and before noon of Day 2, the hook is in the sand at Hanalei Bay.

Day 2 & 3: Hanalei Bay

There is so much to explore on this part of Kauai, and Hanalei Bay is so amazing we spend two nights here before exploring the NaPali Coast.

Day 4: NaPali Coast

Off to an early start, we sail downwind, close to the legendary sea cliffs of the NaPali coast to really get a feel for the geography and the height of these 3,500 ft. sea cliffs, the tallest in the world, then tack out to sea for perspective, then back in close for a lunch stop and swim ashore at Kalalau beach, complete with a waterfall and valley (yes, it really is all in the same place and yes, it is paradise). From Kalalau, we sail to a protected anchorage just down the coast, the site of an ancient Hawaiian fishing village, and our stop for the night.

Day 5: Day sail to Waimea*

A late start to this day, we sail past the remaining sea cliffs and around to the west side of Kauai. The winds are light, and the ocean is calm. This is the dry side of the island and it’s time for serious sunbathing and swimming. We stop for lunch and snorkeling at Waimea Canyon (where Capt. Cook made his first Hawaiian landing) before heading to Port Allen Harbor for the night.

Day 6: Waimea Canyon*

This is a day ashore, and Waimea canyon is the grand canyon of the Pacific region and a sight to behold. You will want to see this area of Kauai and hike out to the overlooks above the NaPali Coast.

Day 7: Day sail to Lihue

Sailing to Nawilili Harbor, Lihue Kaui. Congratulations, you’ve circumnavigated Kauai. Go ashore here for shopping, dining, or whatever you wish to do.

Day 8: Oahu Return

An early start and back to Oahu we go. This is a bit more rigorous a sail since it is upwind, enjoyable yes, but we won’t be offended if you opt to take Hawaiian Air back to Oahu.

*Day 5 & 6 Option: Niihau

Sail to Niihau Island and anchor for the night. Depart Niihau and sail to Port Allen Harbor. –note of caution– You can’t go ashore on Niihau as it is a private and protected Hawaiian culture reserve. There is not much to see or do here and it requires a lot of sailing to go and come back.

British tech magnate Mike Lynch, 2 US citizens among missing after luxury yacht sinks off Sicily

15 people were rescued and one body believed to be the cook was found near the wreck, but six others were unaccounted for and believed inside the hull, by andrea rosa and nicole winfield | the associated press • published august 19, 2024 • updated on august 19, 2024 at 6:21 pm.

British tech magnate Mike Lynch and five other people were missing after their luxury sailing yacht sank during a freak storm off Sicily early Monday, Italy’s civil protection and authorities said. Lynch’s wife and 14 other people survived.

Lynch, who was  acquitted in June  in a big U.S. fraud trial, was among six people who remain unaccounted for after their chartered sailboat sank off Porticello, when a tornado over the water known as a waterspout struck the area overnight, said Salvo Cocina of Sicily’s civil protection agency.

One body was recovered, and police divers spent the day trying to reach the hull of the ship, which was resting at a depth of 50 meters (163 feet) off Porticello where it had been anchored, rescue authorities said. They returned to the site after 10 p.m. to see if it would be possible to search through the night, when weather conditions were expected to worsen, said Luca Cari, spokesman of the fire rescue service.

It had a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers, the Italian coast guard said. A sudden fierce storm had battered the area overnight, and struck the place precisely where the 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian had been moored.

“They were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Cocina, noting that another superyacht nearby wasn't as badly damaged and helped rescue some of the 15 survivors, who included Lynch's wife Angela Bacares.

The Bayesian was notable for its single 75-meter (246-feet) mast — one of the world’s tallest made of aluminum and which was lit up at night, just hours before it sank. Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week.

One of the survivors, identified as Charlotte Golunski, said she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, Italian news agency ANSA reported, quoting the mother. The father, James Emsley, also survived, said Cocina.

Hundreds of pagers exploded in Lebanon and Syria in a deadly attack. Here's what we know.

Karsten Borner, the captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, said he had noticed the Bayesian nearby during the storm but after it calmed he saw a red flare and realized the ship had simply disappeared, ANSA and the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported. Borner said he and a crew member boarded their tender and found a lifeboat with 15 people, some of them injured, who they then took aboard and alerted the coast guard.

Eight of those rescued were hospitalized while the others were taken to a hotel. One body believed to be the cook was found near the wreck, but six others were unaccounted for and believed inside the hull, said Cari, the fire rescue spokesperson. The rescue operations, which were visible from shore, involved helicopters and rescue boats from the coast guard, fire rescue and civil protection service.

Fisherman Francesco Cefalu’ said he had seen a flare from shore at around 4:30 a.m. and immediately set out to the site but by the time he got there, the Bayesian had already sunk, with only cushions, wood and other items from the superyacht floating in the water.

“But for the rest, we didn’t find anyone,” he said from the port hours later. He said that he immediately alerted the coast guard and stayed on site for three hours, but didn't find any survivors. “I think they are inside, all the missing people.”

He said he had been up early to check the weather to see if he could go fishing, and surmised that a sudden waterspout had struck the yacht.

“It could be that the mast broke, or the anchor at the prow pulled it, I don’t know,” he said.

Cocina said the crew and passengers hailed from a variety of countries: In addition to Britain and the United States, passengers and crew were from Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain, he said.

Among the dead and missing, four were British, two were American, and one was a man with dual citizenship from Canada and Antigua, according to Luciano Pischedda, the Italian Coast Guard official overseeing the rescue operations.

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Italy to conduct a preliminary assessment. The Foreign Commonwealth and Development office said it was “providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families.”

Dutch foreign ministry spokesperson Casper Soetekouw said the lone Dutch citizen on board, a man, had been rescued and was not in life-threatening condition.

Lynch, once hailed as Britain’s king of technology, was cleared in June of fraud and conspiracy charges related to Hewlett Packard’s $11 billion takeover of his company, Autonomy Corp.

The not-guilty verdicts followed an 11-week criminal trial in San Francisco that delved into the history of HP’s  2011 acquisition  of Autonomy, a business software firm founded by Lynch.

The  fraud accusations  represented a dramatic turn in the fortunes of an entrepreneur once described as the Bill Gates of Britain — a title he seemed to live up to when he netted an $800 million from the Autonomy sale.

The acquittal vindicated Lynch, who had vehemently denied wrong doing and portrayed HP as a technological train wreck.

“I’m looking forward to returning the UK and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field,” Lynch said in a statement released after the verdict.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, can accommodate 12 passengers in four double cabins, a triple and the master suite, plus crew accommodations, according to Charter World and Yacht Charters.

The vessel, which previously was named Salute when it flew under a Dutch flag, featured a sleek, minimalist interior of light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions and photos on the charter sites.
