If you have heard about beaching a Catamaran but don’t know how to do it? Don’t worry, it’s easier than you think. Below I will teach you how.
If you want to know more about how to choose the right beach, when beaching cant be done, and more, keep on reading.
Table of Contents
Beaching a catamaran is when you use a beach as an improvised marina. It can be done in two ways, either entirely stranded on the beach with no water around the hulls (for hull repairs), or partially stranded, with only the bows on the beach (bringing onboard load).
The fundamental distinction between these two is that a fully stranded version utilizes the high tide to go far up the beach. When the low tide comes, it remains on the beach—leaving enough time for repairs until the next high tide comes and picks the boat up.
Using the partially stranded method enables you to bring onboard gear or people that otherwise would be tricky with a dinghy. It can also be used as an alternative to standard anchoring.
To find the right spot to beach your catamaran, I would recommend using this list to aid with your choosing. The Criteria are;
Choosing the right beach and location on the shore is an essential skill in making this an enjoyable experience instead of a horribly expensive one.
I see two potential situations: you find yourself cruising, and suddenly this perfect beach appears, and now you want to bring your catamaran upon it.
The second situation, which is the preferred one out of a safety perspective, is the one where you actually plan to beach your cat because ou needs to do maintenance or inspections of the boat.
Let’s look at situation number one, you have found a beach, and you want to park your boat on top of it.
Since you dont have information on the beach other than the charts of the water coming up to it, you will have to bring all your experience to test on this one.
If you know the area well, then you can use that information to your advantage when choosing your spot. Do you usually find coral rocks on the beach? Can you already spot that the beach isn’t flat but seems to have dark spots?
All of this might be indications that this might not be the perfect place to beach.
You also might have to anchor a few meters out to understand the wave patterns and winds before you go all the way to the beach.
The second way is much better since now you will be able to ask people in the marina, or online. You can also carefully study the amount of traffic that passes by and if they create big waves that might interact with your beaching.
Planning your beaching means that you can find a beach that fulfills all the criteria, which I would say is especially important the first couple of times. Once you get more comfortable, you can improvise more and more.
An excellent example of a boat that can be beached is a Lagoon; this is because the keel protects all of the vital parts. Let’s look a little bit deeper and see if also your boat can beach safely!
If the boat is appropriate to beach or not os something that differs from model to model, here I will give you some general guidelines so that you can better understand what makes a boat able to beach safely.
The lowest point of the boat needs to be something hard , so this principle means that if you are going to put all of the boat’s weight on any part of the baot, that part really needs to be strong enough to hold the full force of the boat.
If you have a boat where the lowest part of the boat is either the rudder, propeller, or anything else that is obviously not strong enough, then that boat is not a good match with beaching.
If you have a boat with daggerboards, please notice that they are not strong enough to withstand beaching, and since you dont have any fixed keels, beaching might not be possible.
On the other hand, if you have a boat with fixed keels, then the odds are that you will do much better since these are usually very sturdy. They are also long, making the weight distribution more even.
If your boat has skegs , this will significantly enhance the safety of your rudder. For example, if you’re on your last few feet from the beach and suddenly, a medium-sized wave lifts your boat up and then drops it down again once the wave has passed.
Then there might not be enough water to keep the boat afloat; the boat hits whatever is under, and in the case of skegs, no big deal, in the case of the unprotected rudder, it might bend or crack.
The size of the boat is a minor issue; more important are the factors mentioned above. Obviously, a smaller ship can be more easily pushed or winched in the direction you want if you get stuck.
But other than that the size doesn’t really matter…
There are many good reasons to beach a boat, I think first and foremost, since the boat is totally dried-out, the possibility of doing maintenance and repairs under the water level even if your in a somewhat deserted area (which is something I really would have enjoyed when we had a giant hole in our monohull, more on that in another article 😉 ).
The other aspect is the amount of money you will spend, especially if you’re on a big boat where the prices for a haul out can be ridiculously high.
It is also an excellent way to inspect and remove growth on the hull. Just make sure you do this in an environmentally healthy way. It is not a nice thing to leave your antifouling scrapings in the sea. That’s something for a proper marina.
There are some drawbacks; once the boat is out of the water, many functions will not work anymore.
The first thing to notice is that your toilet(head on a boat) is probably not going to work since most need water is taken directly from the sea.
The other issue is that you might not have electricity to run all your conveniences. Since there is no water around the boat that the engine can use for cooling, you don’t be able to run it. That also means that you want to be able to generate electricity other than with your solar, wind, or portable generator.
Considering the other alternative, partially beaching, the main reason would be to unload or load large amounts of stuff; maybe you have bought a lot of groceries that would take ten trips with the dinghy. Or perhaps you need to fill up with 400 liters of water.
Some people also use this as a way to anchor. Still, I never really understood why. My experience tells me that its only a bouncy and uncomfortable event unless its very calm sees and zero waves.
We have briefly discussed the dangers of beaching, but I want to make a few more points under this heading.
So there is a real possibility of you getting stuck. This is mostly a problem if you are partially stranded, and a big wave lifts you and carries you onto the beach.
This will put you in a position where you might break something under the boat and the possibility of not getting back out again.
I’m not saying there will be a giant tsunami-like wave to bring you one mile inland; I’m talking about something that will put you far enough up that you can not motor out on your own.
This is mainly an issue of choosing your correct location, making sure there won’t be much traffic, and being aware of weather changes, especially if you are not on board at the time.
Being unlucky or not doing your reconnaissance thoroughly, you might put your boat on a rock.
One problem with rocks is that they might be under the sand and not possible to spot from above.
So what happens if you do park on something hard. So what the sand actually does is that it shapes itself around the hull, making the forces acting upon it be more evenly distributed.
This distribution of weight is essential if you want to avoid cracks.
When placing a boat on a rock, all the boat’s weight is concentrated on this small point of contact, and the risk of breaking something is much higher.
One problem with beaching is no matter how perfect a beach you will find; you are basically parking the boat on sandpaper at best. This means extra wear on your hulls and antifouling.
There is something you could try to minimize this. Build protecting “boots” for your boat. These could be made of whatever materials you can find that are strong enough to withstand the sandpaper effect of the boat rubbing against the sand.
You add these homemade protectors to the area of the boat, which will be in contact with the beach; this will make the chafing happen between the protectors and the sand instead of against the hull.
When traveling in shallow water, you should be aware of the prop spinning up sand and rocks. This increases the wear on the prop by massive amounts.
If you’re unlucky enough, you might even rip up small rocks from under the sand; these can easily make chips in your prop, making it unbalanced and creating vibrations.
The good thing is that it is easy to counteract those problems; the first rule is to limit the amount of prop action.
Keep the rpm as low as you can and avoid revving up if you dont really need to. When it is shallow and possible, consider putting the boat in neutral and drifting the last few feet up on the beach.
No matter which one of the two methods that you opt for, make sure you go far enough up the beach so that you do not bounce around.
What you dont want is that your boat is semi-stranded, that is when your boat lifts from the sand whit every little wave. This will make for a lot of baning vibrations and a lot of noise.
It takes a little practice, but you’ll quickly get the hang of it after a few tries!
There is not a big difference between anchorage and beaching when it comes to weather, but here are some factors worth diving a little deeper into.
Since you are now on a beach, there is only one way to get out, going backward. If you have too much wind or waves on your stern, you might not be going anywhere until that changes.
While at anchor, you might be able to go full speed with your prop; as discussed above, this is not recommended in shallow waters due to the potential damage to the boat.
Beaching is a calm weather sport when the weather is not perfect id instead use a standard anchorage then risk banging around on the beach.
When it comes to setting anchor, I like to drop them from my boat and then motor-power “away from it,” make sure it digs down, and I know for sure that it is holding.
While beaching, this is also very important since this might have to be strong enough to pull you off the beach, so make sure your anchor is safe!
If you have a strong enough dingy, you can use it to drive the anchor down. Once the first one is set, you lay another anchor to form a Y position; this position is advantageous if the boat tends to wander from one side to another.
Something that I always do when I have either a new crew or an experienced crew but are doing something that we have never done before is a “walk-through.”
We do this to determine who does what and when it is also excellent to find the problems in your plan and make it better.
Usually, I start by showing all the different phases, such as the “approach” or “anchoring” phase. Then we draw on the whiteboard how it’s going to look, and together we come up with a solid plan.
The next thing we do is a dry-practice where I will call out the commands, and the crew will act as if we are doing it live.
This makes us identify and correct gaps in the plan. Once we are done with the plan, we get to the mission, and we execute flawlessly.

Best Sailboats You Can Beach
Sailing is a unique experience unlike any other, especially in shallow waters. There are plenty of sailboats you can beach to enjoy these opportunities.
Beaching a sailboat allows you to park the boat right along shallow waters so you can explore where other large boats cannot. So what are some of the best sailboats you can beach?
The Catalina 22, Fountaine Pajot Lucia 40, Hunter 22, and Lagoon 39 are great examples of sailboats you can beach. Others include Nautitech 40, Hobie 16, and the Hunter 15. Essentially, every catamaran trimaran, and full keel sailboats are capable of being beached as long as you use caution.
The beauty of beaching a sailboat can help save you time and money. Instead of anchoring and using a dinghy to get closer to shore, a beachable sailboat can skip that entire process.
According to experts in the industry, you want to make sure you are capable of beaching your sailboat first before trying it out. Failure to know if your boat can safely do it can result in expensive damages or potential injury.
Table of contents
When sailing on a boat that you can beach, you have a luxury like no other sailboat. Whenever you want to explore shallow waters, you simply head that direction and ease it into the sand. A handful of variables come into play, but generally lower draft boats are capable of doing so.
{{boat-info="/boats/catalina-22"}}
The Catalina 22 is an excellent option and is one of the most popular sailboats in use. Due to its retractable keel, this makes all the difference in the world when trying to beach your sailboat.
For a sailboat under 25 feet, it is hard to beat the comfort and ease of use of a Catalina 22. Whether you are day sailing or sleeping in it overnight, you can easily go back and forth between beaching and to deeper waters.
{{boat-info="/boats/fountaine-pajot-lucia-40"}}
The Fountaine Pajot Lucia 40 is a relatively newer design for catamarans. The Lucia 40 debuted in 2016 and has received very positive reviews.
This 40 footer offers plenty of space on board for several people to live on. It has plenty of power and stability to handle any conditions. In addition, the sailboat can be beached since catamarans are two long hulls.
{{boat-info="/boats/hunter-22"}}
The Hunter 22 is everything you need to get out on the water and is completely beachable. This sloop rig is comfortable enough for family and friends without compromising anything.
Some include a performance package that you can use to make it in a racing sailboat. Either way, you can safely beach it since it has a hydraulic lifting centerboard.
{{boat-info="/boats/lagoon-39"}}
The Lagoon 39 has very similar features compared to other Lagoon models. However, the mast and center of buoyancy are different since the hulls are further apart.
For a 38.3 foot sailboat, some sailors might find it intimidating to beach one of these. Luckily this is a catamaran, which is easy to beach and has no risk of damaging your boat if you do it correctly.
{{boat-info="/boats/nautitech-40-open"}}
Another good size catamaran right at 40 feet is the Nautitech 40 . The fractional sloop and open design is a great set of features that many gravitate to when looking for a sailboat.
For the perfect balance of speed and comfort, this one is up there with the best. The biggest difference between the Nautitech 40 and other competing catamarans is that it uses foam composite instead of balsa cores, which saves a ton of weight. Beaching this catamaran is easy, especially with its four foot draft.
{{boat-info="/boats/hobie-16"}}
The Hobie 16 is an excellent sailboat that is trailerable, fun, and can be beached. This boat’s design debuted in 1969 and offers one of the best options for getting your feet wet with a catamaran.
With its kick up rudders and a mix between fiberglass and foam hulls, you should have no problems beaching it. If you are wanting to sail with a companion for the day or want to sail by yourself, the Hobie 16 is a great size to do either one.
{{boat-info="/boats/hunter-15"}}
The Hunter 15 provides simplicity when you need it, whether you are an expert or newbie to sailing. The fiberglass hull and foam floatation, it is a very sturdy sailboat for its size.
With its stability in addition to its kick up rudder, you can safely take this one to the beach to explore your surroundings. They also make this one in an 18 footer for those that want a little more room.
{{boat-info="/boats/montgomery-17"}}
A boat that has surprised many in the pocket cruiser category is the Montgomery 17 . The masthead sloop and swing keel make it a unique sailboat for around 18 feet.
When the swing keel is up, the boat is just shy of two feet max on the draft. This allows you to beach it or explore shallow waters with ease. They also make these in 15 and 23 foot editions, whether you want more or less space.
{{boat-info="/boats/flying-scot-classic"}}
This 19 footer is one of the most popular daysailers of all time, dating back to 1957. The sloop rigged design remains popular to this day and has been competitively raced in over 130 fleets across the U.S.
When the centerboard is up, the boat glides gracefully at just eight inches and can be beached or used in shallow water. Many have used this boat to sleep on with some accommodations, even though it was designed to be a daysailer.
{{boat-info="/boats/windrider-10"}}
The Wind Rider 10 is a trimaran that is fast, stable, and has an extremely low draft. This particular model joins the likes of other Wind Riders, like the 16 and 17, but is not as large for those wanting to have something smaller.
The six inch draft and weight of about 125 pounds makes it easy to transport and beach. The beauty of this trimaran is that you can go anywhere you want without having to worry about size.
Beaching a boat is when a sailor decides to park their boat on the beach in the event that they do not have a marina to tie off to or if they want to explore the area. There are two ways to beach your boat, which is stranded or partially stranded.
When stranded, the boat is completely out of the water. This allows for repairs to be made on the hull or to inspect it periodically if you travel full time with it.
As for partially stranded, this means the boat is still in the water but the majority of the bow is in the sand. This allows you to take a break from traveling or to go ashore for a while. Both beaching methods have their advantages depending on why you need them at that moment.
The lowest section of your boat needs to be tough if you want to beach it. This needs to be a strong material because you are hitting against something firm every time you are wanting to stop your boat.
If the lowest part of your boat has a propeller, rudder, or anything that sticks out too low, it is not a good candidate for beaching. This is why it is important to know what is underneath your boat and what it is made of.
Fixed keels usually have a better chance at standing up to the wear and tear of beaching since they are made with the hull. They are more sturdy and provide stability while beaching.
Full keels, twin keels, multi-hulled boats, and a few varieties of bulb or wing keels are good candidates for beaching. Doing your research based on what boat you have is the most important thing before attempting to beach.
A boat with dagger boards is not quite strong enough to handle beaching. Since the keels are not fixed, it might cause damage if it has any pressure in the wrong direction.
If your boat has skegs, it might be wise to avoid beaching. If your boat takes on a wave and slightly gets lifted while in shallow water, the chance of damaging the rudder is much higher when the boat comes back down and there is no water to stop it.
If you are curious about beaching your sailboat, you are not alone. Most likely you have seen other sailors do it or have seen pictures online showing boats of all shapes and sizes tackle this feat.
The problem is that beaching your boat is not good, especially if you are rough on your boat in the process. However, when done properly, beaching your boat will not harm anything.
When you want to beach your boat, you have to choose a section that is relatively flat. While this sounds like common sense, it should always be your first choice when given the opportunity.
It is also important to note that you do not want a lot of rocks or debris in your way. If you can safely navigate to the shore without anything potentially stopping you underneath, that is your best bet.
You will need to take into account your environment while trying to beach your boat. The wind and ranges are going to act a bit differently closer to shore than they are in deeper waters.
When positioning your boat to the beach, you have to have the same mentality as if you were trying to park it in a packed marina. Paying attention to your surroundings is going to be key.
If the conditions allow you to safely drift to the beach, allow enough momentum to carry you there at a nice pace. After that, you should turn off the engine or propeller in case you hit shallow water faster than you anticipate.
If you hit the beach a little harder than you would have liked, it could potentially damage your prop or hull. Navigating using slow speeds and turning off the prop will stop it from trying to turn in the sand.
Unless you are in an emergency, you should wait for the right time to beach your boat. If the wind and waves are not in the best place, you should consider waiting it out. Your environment does not have to be completely perfect, but it would be best to have desirable conditions while trying to beach your boat.
The whole purpose of beaching your boat is that you can park it on shore and then simply get out of your boat. However, there are times when the tide comes in or the water is extremely shallow for a section of the beach.
During this time, you might have to consider walking a bit until you get where you want to be or use an inflatable dinghy to help you out the rest of the way. In addition, the dinghy can be used to help deploy your anchors on your main boat.
Beaching is a great way to explore shallow waters or to hit up a nice looking area. There are plenty of reasons to beach your boat. However, there are plenty of dangers associated with beaching that you need to be aware of.
This happens a lot more than you would think, especially when waves or the conditions change while you are beached. Waves can carry your boat further into the beach where you cannot move it.
If this is the case, you would have to try and pull or push it out by hand or wait for the water to come back to you. This could potentially damage your boat too.
If you get stuck, the dangers of damaging your boat go up. In addition, you could damage your boat before the chance of getting stuck even occurs.
Over time, you are effectively rubbing the hull into sandpaper. This means you will need to periodically check your hull out to make sure it is not wearing down too fast.
Failure to locate rocks or anything in the water beforehand is going to ensure your boat is damaged. If you damage your hull, you definitely would have to beach it in order to make repairs.
You could also mess up the prop, rudder, or whatever you have that sticks out lower than the boat. These delicate, but essential parts of your boat do not need to be beaten up.
If you do not beach your boat properly, there is a chance you could lose your boat. This is why picking a flat surface and checking out your boat after you beach is important.
If you beach your boat onto a rocky surface, there is a good chance that the material is not supported underneath. This could potentially wiggle your boat loose or mess with your anchor. Taking your time while beaching your boat is crucial to making sure your boat does not take off anywhere.

People sunbathing on a beach in Moscow’s Serebryany Bor.
This is one of most picturesque places for sunbathing. Situated on the bank of the Moskva River, this location has all the conveniences of a beach resort and overlooks both green spaces and urban areas. The beach is secluded enough from the city to be nice and calm.
Address: Tamanskaya St., Beach No. 2. To get here take Bus 390 from the metro station Polezhaevskaya and exit at the Prichal stop.
This beach is more remote than Serebryany Bor-2, and is quite a long walk away from the other beach, so we recommend that you chose just one of these destinations before you go. This place is further out in the countryside and is surrounded by greenery. However, there are still all the amenities and activities you’d expect, both in water and on land, including beach sports and opportunities for relaxation. You can rent a tent here, but we recommend that you do so in advance.
Address: Fourth line of Serebryany Bor, Beach No. 3. To get here, take Bus 390 to the stop Beach No. 3. From there the beach is only a three-minute walk away. Trolleybuses also go here, but they don’t stop as close to the beach, so you’ll need to walk further. On the way, you will pass the beautiful Zhivopisny (Picturesque) Bridge.
While Serebryanny Bor is situated on the Moskva River, Mescherskoye is a small lake not far from the Moscow Ring Road. This place is located in a village so you are likely to encounter locals cooking shashlik. Next to the beach is a large forest and a park where you can rent a bike or boat. However, there are no beach chairs for rent here.
Address: 5 Voskresensky St. To get here, take an elektrichka from the Kievskaya railway station to Vostryakovo or catch Bus 66 from the Yugo-Zapadnaya metro station. The lake will be at the final stop.
There are three lakes in the Kosino district of Moscow: Beloye (White), Chernoye (Black) and Svyatoye (Saint). Local residents swim in all of them and they are in close proximity to each other. Officially, however, swimming is only allowed in Beloye Lake, the water is said to be cleaner and there are fish. One of the local landmarks is located right on the bank of the lake, the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. There is also a nearby hotel for cats, called “Red Cat,” which might inspire you to make the trip.
Address: 2/6 Zaozernaya St. To get here take a bus (602, 613, 772, 747, 722 or 79) from metro station Vykhino to the Poliklinika stop. Or take Bus 1064, 792, or 723 from the Novokosino metro station to the Vetluzhskaya Ulitsa stop. This will get you to within a five-minute walk of the lake. The Kosinskaya Fabrika bus stop, on either route, will also get you to the lake.
This is one of the most luxurious beaches and there are lots of bars and restaurants. The rental price for beach chairs and other services is quite high, but the views are nice. In fact, this is one of the most popular places for wedding photoshoots. At the beach, you can find the Royal Yacht Club where water sports are available. The most spectacular thing about this beach is that the sand was brought in from the Maldives. Why not?
Address: 39 Leningranskoye Highway, about a 10-minute walk from the Vodny Stadion metro station.
There are no beach chairs here, but you will find free parking, a number of cafes, volleyball courts and soccer pitches. The beach here is grassy and doesn’t have sand. It can also get crowded because the Moscow Ring Road and Leningradsky Highway are nearby. At this beach, it’s a great idea to take a riverboat tour and you can purchase tickets for these from the station.
Address: 5 Pribrezhny Lane. To get here take Bus 138, 270, or 338 from the metro station Rechnoy Vokzal to the Pribrezhny Proyezd stop.
This is a cozy pond right on the edge of a park. There are also several cafes and sports fields. The only disadvantage of this beach is that it is located really far away from the city center, in the town of Zelenograd, the northwestern district of Moscow.
Address: Zelenograd, Park Pobedy, 4922 Lane. To get here take Bus 476M from the Rechnoy Vokzal metro station to the Dvorets Kultury stop. Be aware that this route can take over an hour. Make sure to pay attention so you don’t miss the stop.
This lake is also situated in Zelenograd and the name translates to Black Lake. However, don’t confuse this with the other Black Lake mentioned in listing four. This lake got its name because it was once filled with peat and there is still some peat on the bottom of the lake. This is not dangerous but it does is make the water appear dark. This lake is situated in a nice, natural area and is a bit primitive with a lack of infrastructure. This lake is only a 20-minute walk from the Big City Pond in case you happen to find yourself craving more company or amenities.
Address: Zelinograd, Microdistrict 6. To get here take Bus 400 from the Rechnoy Vokzal metro station to the Mosckovskoye Shosse stop.
This pond has an interesting history. In the 19th century, when the railroad between Moscow and St. Petersburg was being built, this pond was constructed as a reservoir for trains. This nice, small pond is located in an urban area and you can swim or rent a boat here. There are cafes and stores nearby.
Address: Zelinograd, Microdistrict 10. To get here, take Bus 431M from the Rechnoy Vokzal metro station to the Oktyabrskaya stop. Be aware that this route can take over an hour.
With boats and catamarans, this place has plenty of entertainment for both children and adults. The water here isn’t especially clean, and at the end of the summer, it can actually get quite dirty. Still, this is a beach where swimming is officially allowed.
Address: 12 Akademika Vinogradova St. To get here take Bus 144 from the Teply Stan metro station or Bus 227 from the Troparyovo metro station to the Akademika Vinogradova stop.
