EAST BAY SAILING FOUNDATION

IMG_9195.jpg

Located at Bristol Yacht Club in Bristol RI, East Bay Sailing Foundation represents the future of sailing by training youth and adults from Bristol and surrounding communities. We train beginner sailors on appropriate beginner boats and give them the opportunity to advance to single handed boats and larger keel boats. We also offer racing opportunities for youth and adult sailors and are working hard to expand access to our foiling programs, one of only a few on the east coast.

As sailors ourselves, we know the joy of learning to handle a boat solo or with a crew brings with it a greater appreciation and respect for the marine environment, the ability to form deep lifelong friendships and life skills that can be applied every day.

Herreshoff Marine Museum

Sailing Programs

Programs start this spring, 401-253-5000 x220 for questions, one burnside street , bristol, ri, 02809 usa.

The Herreshoff Marine Museum offers unique & interactive youth and adult sailing classes for the summer and fall. The mission of the Herreshoff Seamanship Program is to teach the art of seamanship and the principles of sailing, with an emphasis on excellent instruction, as well as the design, beauty, and unique features of these classic vessels.  All classes are taught on our Herreshoff 12 ½s – 16 foot wooden sloops with jib, main & spinnaker – or our Sea Sprite 23s on the Narragansett Bay.  Class sizes are limited and will be filled on a first come, first serve basis.

Updated as of May 22, 2020: The Herreshoff Marine Museum based on the  guidance  Issued by the state of Rhode Island for summer camps has implemented the following  changes for summer sailing camp.

We will be modifying the drop off and pick up procedures to eliminate the forming of groups of people and take into account the need for social distancing.

All staff and campers will be screened verbally upon arrival at camp using the state's self attestation  form . Anyone who answers yes to any of the questions will not be permitted to participate in camp and be sent home.

Visitors during the camp day. Trips to Prudence Island will not occur this summer and our popular Friday cook out and awards will be limited to staff and campers only.

We will be utilizing “stable groups” in our program, and our groups will be based on state guidelines of 15 people or fewer. As a sailing program, our groups in a boat on the water will be smaller than that as boat groups are typically 6 people or fewer.

We will also be reducing the total number of campers per session to fewer than 50 participants.

Your child will be with the same children each day and the same instructors. They will sail on the same boat during the course of the session.  All staff will use masks during camp, and although it is not required, campers will be asked to use masks as well while sailing.

Camp will be conducted on the waterfront and under the tent to allow for the state recommended distance of 14 feet between stable groups and personal social distancing within groups. The classroom at 17 Burnside street will not be utilized for camp activities due to its small size. Facilities will be installed on the waterfront to allow for frequent hand sanitizing and all campers will be encourage to do so multiple times per day.

All high-touch camp equipment will be sanitized multiple times per day. This will include the bathrooms in the museum and the boats we will be using in the sailing program.

Life jackets will not be provided due to the difficulty in cleaning and sanitizing them. Each sailor must provide their own life jacket.

As we continue to learn more from the state, we will update and modify our procedures to comply with recommended practices.

We will continue to modify our standard policies which we hope will make it easier for you to make the decision to enroll:

  • - The minimum amount required to enroll your child in summer camp to 10% down with the balance due on July 1, 2020. This should make it easier for you to hold a spot in the event that our class sizes are limited.
  • - The revised the cancellation policy as follows: Full refunds will be issued to withdrawals received before the start of the Session. In addition, we have waived the administrative fees for the 2020 season. You may also request to transfer your registration to a session later in the summer if there is space available in that session or receive full credit for for the amount paid toward the 2021 season.

We’re all waiting and hoping for good news, and now it is here. Summer camp may look different this year than it has in the past but the importance of camp in a child's development has not changed,  the memories, friendships and shared experiences will still be created this summer on the water. Here at the Herreshoff Marine Museum we are dedicated to providing the best summer camp experience possible. We can't control the wind but we can adjust the sails, we hope to see you this summer.

On behalf of your museum staff, we hope you’re staying safe and sane in the midst of these uncharted waters.

FULCRUM FLIGHT SCHOOL - UFO Foiling Clinics

Has your child always wanted to learn to fly? Here’s their chance!  New for 2020  The Herreshoff Marine Museum has teamed up with  Fulcrum Speedworks  to offer  Fulcrum Flight School - UFO Foiling Clinics  this summer at the museum for sailors ages 12 - 15 with previous dinghy sailing experience.

Foiling is no longer just for highly-trained professionals on  Moths  and  America's Cup yachts . Foiling is for everyone, including junior sailors, and the UFO is the ideal platform for learning how to foil. Fulcrum Speedworks, builders of the  foiling UFO , will be offering a total of 4 clinic days this summer. *The days are scheduled during sessions 2 , 4 , 6 , and 8 of the Herreshoff Summer Sailing Program and are coached by a member of the Fulcrum Speedworks coaching staff.

Fulcrum Flight School Highlights:

  • Learn how to foil on the most accessible and easiest to use foiling dinghy on the market, the foiling UFO.
  • Professional coaching from a staff member at Fulcrum Speedworks, builders of the foiling UFO.
  • Class size will be limited to 3-4 foiling students. We've found foiling can be very tiring when you're just getting started, so we'll be switching sailors on and off one UFO. Switching off the UFO and watching another student foil allows the learning to continue while you catch your breath.
  • Plus with junior sailors the UFO can be sailed one, two or even three up depending on sailor size.
  • And to get smaller sailors started on the path to success the coach can come along for the ride, too.

This summer 16 lucky kids are going to have the time of their lives! Is it going to be yours? Sign up today for the Fulcrum Flight School as part of the Herreshoff Summer Sailing Program. Questions? Contact Kirk Cusic at  [email protected] .

The United States SailGP Team held its inaugural ‘Learn to Foil’ camp with the Bristol Yacht Club & East Bay Sailing Foundation (EBSF) July 20-21 as it kicked off ‘Foiling First’ – a breakthrough athlete development program created to advance diversity and inclusion in the sport as it builds the first-ever professional pathway to foiling in the US.

Foiling First: Learn to Foil Camps  were created in support of the initiative’s goal to use foiling as a catalyst to advance change in the sport of sailing; expanding the talent pool, educating young athletes and coaches about the importance of inclusion and equity in sailing, and including communities that may have previously been excluded from the sport.

bristol yacht club sailing camp

For the camp at Bristol Yacht Club & EBSF, U.S. SailGP Team athletes Jimmy Spithill, Rome Kirby, Andrew Campbell, and Cooper Dressler flew in straight after competing at the Great Britain Sail Grand Prix in Plymouth, to facilitate a multi-day course introducing thirty-five community youth and their coaches to foiling. The two-day camp consisted of extensive individual coaching sessions with youth and athletes, including safety briefings, equipment overviews, on-shore instruction, as well as two individual hour-long, on-water coaching sessions per athlete.

Spithill said in a statement: “The other athletes and I couldn’t help but smile all day. When you see the next generation get their first taste of foiling, it takes us back to our first time taking off and flying above the water. We see this as starting to fill the American talent pool and we want to be sure we’re casting a wider net and help to advance inclusion and diversity in our sport.”

YouTube video

American boat manufacturer  Melges Performance Sailboats , which has partnered with the U.S. SailGP Team and Foiling First, provided access to the new Skeeta and Nikki foiling platforms for the camp which are designed to allow new athletes an easy transition between traditional sailing and foiling, facilitating a smooth process for youth to learn how to foil for the first time.

East Bay Sailing chairperson Kristin Browne said in a statement: “This was an amazing week for our community helping launch Foiling First with the best coaches you can possibly have. I heard kids come off the water saying ‘this was the most fun they’ve ever had sailing’ and we can’t wait to continue in our partnership with the U.S. SailGP Team.”

As part of the camp programming, youth and coaches also participated in an educational workshop put on by the team’s  #RacefortheFuture  partner  RISE , which educated the group about the concept of identity, its multifaceted nature and how advancing diversity and inclusion benefits teams and the sport more broadly.

RISE senior director of curriculum Dr. Collin Williams said: “We’ve seen that engaging with youth is important because a lot of the stereotypes and biases we have heard we learn as kids. We’re excited to partner with the U.S. SailGP Team and help educate young athletes on how they can create inclusive environments and, in the future, help lead change.”

The United States SailGP Team is currently accepting applications from sailing organizations interested in joining Foiling First. Interested organizations can learn more and apply for both the partnership program and learn to foil camps at  FoilingFirst.com .

Foiling First to Kick off in Bristol

  • By Dave Reed
  • Updated: June 28, 2021

Last week the United States SailGP Team announced that applications have opened for community sailing organizations to join its “Foiling First” program, created to “develop foiling sailors and advance diversity and inclusion in the sport through building the first ever professional pathway to foiling in the States.

Female sailing a foiling dinghy

“The first partner announcement came through Rhode Island’s East Bay Sailing Foundation which operates on the grounds of Bristol YC where, in late July, U.S. SailGP team members will kick off the initiative on the upper reaches of Narragansett Bay with its first foiling camp for local kids and coaches. “Since launching Foiling First we’ve been overwhelmed by the response from the American sailing community,” said U.S. SailGP Team CEO and Driver Jimmy Spithill in a team statement. “We’re looking forward to working with Bristol Yacht Club and East Bay Sailing Foundation and we’re excited to invite more organizations to join. It’s really encouraging to see communities ready to participate in change on and off the water.”

The program, the team says, has three components whereby organizations such as the East Bay Sailing Foundation will build a fleet of foiling boats to train locals with the support of U.S. SailGP Team sailors and coaches who will lead annual multi-day clinics. The partner organization will also then incorporate one diversity-focused organization in their community to work with, supported by Foiling First, to create introductions to the sport of sailing.

“Kids want to learn how to race foiling boats and compete like the pros do,” said Kristin Browne, board chair of the East Bay Sailing Foundation. “At the same time, as a club, we want to contribute to making our sport more inclusive and we’re excited to partner with Foiling First and the U.S. SailGP Team to help begin that change.”

The Foundation will host the first domestic Foiling First: Learn to Foil Camp July 20-21, in cooperation with Melges Performance Sailboats, which will supply six to eight of its Skeeta and Nikka singlehanded scow-like foilers designed by Australian designers Jim and David French. According to Browne, U.S. SailGP sailors Jimmy Spithill, Rome Kirby and Andrew Campbell will lead the clinic next month using boats provided by Melges. For 2022, a patron of the East Bay Sailing Foundation has purchased six boats for the Bristol program.

According to the announcement, Foiling First participants and coaches will also engage in educational workshops with RISE and World Sailing Trust, aimed at educating athletes on racism, social justice, and advancing inclusion in the sport. Interested candidates for the Foil First camp should contact [email protected]

BRISTOL YACHT CLUB

Our history.

Bristol Yacht Club had a modest birth in 1877 when a group of Brown University students got together and formed Zephyr Boat Club "for the purpose of mutual interests and the practicing of rowing on our harbor, the principal object of the club being however to have a good time."

That same year, Zephyr Boat Club became Neptune Boat Club, and in 1899 we became Bristol Yacht Club. Our initial purpose, having a good time, has continued on for more  years. We've updated this mission to "encourage and promote yachting, seamanship, aquatic sports and social activities among our members." We've had several Clubhouses in several locations around the harbor but our desire to have fun has helped us survive fires, floods, hurricanes and two world wars.

Today, Bristol Yacht Club sits on the west side of Bristol Harbor in the old Red Crest Estate. In 1955 some forward thinking members saw an opportunity, purchased the site and the rest is history.

Our facilities and active waterfront make it easy to have fun. Members actively volunteer to maintain the house, grounds and waterfront. We might host an informal clambake on the lawn one day and a formal dinner dance the next. Our competitive but friendly Wednesday race series often draws more than 40 boats on the line; we are active in the NBYA (Narragansett Bay Yachting Association), MOHOSA (Mount Hope Sailing Association), and Newport to Bermuda races.

Over the years our members have raced fleets of Herreshoff 12 1/2s, Herreshoff S boats, International 110s, Thistles, Dyer Dhows, Pearson 26s, Sea Sprites, 420s, Lasers, Optis, Mercuries and A-Cats. Our Penguin frostbite fleet is one of the oldest continuously operating frostbite fleets in the country.

Our annual cruises in and out of the Bay are perfect opportunities for developing life-long friendships. Visiting yacht clubs on their cruises find Bristol Yacht Club a convenient place to visit, as we are close to so many shore side activities, museums and restaurants.
