Superyacht owners keep me in business, says Britain’s last ship figurehead carver

Superyacht owners who wish to have an element of maritime history worked into their decor have helped keep Britain’s last ship figurehead carver in business.

Andy Peters, from Waterstock in Oxfordshire, said that at one time, every major port would have had a ship’s carver to create the multitude of sculpture that decorated both naval and merchant ships.

But now the 67-year-old is the last one who remains.

He started woodworking aged 11 and was a carpenter his entire life before turning his attention solely to boats in 1990, earning a living through his business Maritima Woodcarving, mostly doing restorations for collectors and museums. Some of his works can sell for up to £30,000.

He says he spent more than a decade restoring traditional decorations on superyachts for owners who wanted a nod to maritime history on board.

“Interior sculpture is a way of keeping figurehead carving alive and it was the bulk of my work for around 10 years,” he told the Telegraph.

“There’s still some restoration work available on the interiors of superyachts .”

All his figureheads are done by hand, and the work has included carving seahorses and dolphins into wooden furniture, with heroes from Greek mythology a popular motif, too.

He has also carried out a host of restorations and original sculptures of ships figureheads, including building a replica figurehead for The Cutty Sar k when the original started to rot .

One of his biggest works was the monumental task of creating the replica of the ship Gotheborg, the Swedish East India Company vessel from 1738.

The project set out to construct as authentic a replica that modern-day safety requirements will allow for a ship to sail unaided around the world.

The majority of figureheads are constructed from sections of timber, laminated to form a carving block. Mr Peters conceded that his trade is dying as the interest in tall ships – sailing ships with several masts – dwindles among young people.

He said: “It’s quite a dying trade because there isn’t that much work. UK trade may be gone forever when I stop, I’m the last carver.

“It used to be a big thing in this country but interest in England is waning especially after our two tall ships were sold.”

The Prince William and its sister ship Stavros S Niarchos, two British tall ships, were sold in 2010 and 2017 respectively, because no one was using them and they weren’t making money, according to Mr Peters.

Mr Peters has been sailing since was 11 and crewed on tall ships himself during holidays.

In March of 1897 Chekhov was dining at an elegant restaurant in Moscow when blood began gushing from his mouth. He returned to his hotel, and later, after another hemmorhage, allowed himself to be moved to a clinic that specialized in the treatment of t.b. and related respiratory infections There he was visited by his sister and Tolstoy, both of whom kept diaries from which the writer quotes. Once Chekhov's own t.b. was dicovered, he tried to minimize the seriousness of his condition. He was moved to Badenweiller, a spa & resort city in the western part of the Black Forest. It was June, 1904. He was with his wife, the actress Olga Knipper. He was very happy with her. As he grew weak, he worked less; finishing "The Cherry Orchard" was the hardest thing he'd ever done. A Russian journalist visited the couple at their hotel and the dispatch he wrote to his editor is quoted. "Chekhovs days are numbered." On July 2, 1904, after midnight, Olga sent someone to get the doctor. Chekhov was delirious. When the doctor arrived, he told Olga he'd send for oxygen. Suddenly Chekhov became lucid & spoke, "What's the use? Before it arrives I'll be a corpse." The doctor figured out how to use the phone on the wall & called the kitchen. He ordered up champagne and 3 glasses which were delivered by a young, sloppily-dress boy. It was almost 3 in the morning. They drank; minutes later, Chekhov died. Olga asked the doctor not to tell anyone about the death until the morning; she wanted time alone with Chekhov. He agreed. In the morning, there was a knock at the door. It was the same boy as the night before, only neatly groomed. He told her about breakfast, and he held a vase with 3 roses in it. He sensed something was wrong. She told him Chekhov was dead, and to find the best mortician. To go quickly yet calmly. To remain calm for her; soon things wouldn't be.
