Matthew Stone, Awards-Winning IYC Yacht Broker on The Future of The Luxury Yacht Market

An Updated Conversation with Matthew Stone, IYC Yacht Broker of The Year

In August of 2021, we published an interview with an upcoming young IYC (International Yacht Company) yacht broker, Matthew Stone.  Since then, 17 months later, he won the prestigious IYC Broker of the Year Award, and of equal importance, helped open and lead the team of the new IYC Showroom at Shelter Island, Mission Bay, in San Diego.

In the meantime, we recently spoke with him again about his dramatic successes in the past 17 months.

Were you surprised when IYC chose you as Broker of The Year, and why did they choose you?

I knew many were in the conversation for Broker of The Year, but yes, I was surprised they chose me.  Yet, I did know that I sold 1100 feet worth of yachts. That means, basically, I sold many 150-foot yachts, 140 foot, and so on.  This is a good way of defining a parameter of success, because yacht pricing goes up and down, but the yacht dimensions stay the same.

In an earlier article about the yachting business, I read that selling a yacht is sometimes like selling a home. Can you discuss this a little?

While there are some parallels in the process of selling a yacht to that of selling real estate, the sales processes seem very different to me.  The complexity of buying a yacht is far more rigorous than a house. You're dealing with complex equipment surrounded by saltwater in most cases. And in many cases, we as salespeople, must remember that many of those who come looking for a yacht, are not always completely aware of what they want. We must peel the layers of the onion so to speak, but thankfully we know how to do it. We ask how often they will use it, if and how many members of the family will use the yacht, what experience they have in yachting, what they are looking for in a crew, things like that.

Another example is most people need real estate, you don't need a yacht, and for that reason alone, you may only have a handful of people that could be a prospective client for a particular yacht. Additionally, when purchasing a yacht, you are buying an ultimate luxury asset. Lastly, in my opinion, there is far more emotion when purchasing a yacht; it's a lifestyle, a lifelong dream, a passion, and at times there are even elements of impulse. But most people don't impulsively buy real estate.

How have you seen the luxury yacht market evolving one the past few years?

Yes, absolutely and in all facets of the industry, starting with construction methods and ending with the consumer. Technology advancements making yachts more efficient and safer. Diesel alternatives are allowing yacht owners to operate their vessels in an environmentally responsible way.  The consumer (and how they use the vessel) is also evolving with several new buyers entering the marketplace to get family, friends, and loved ones together in the safest environment possible.  Finally, where do you see the high-end yacht market growing or not in the next five years?

We no doubt see that the yachting market will continue to grow. We continue to see new buyers enter the marketplace who want to enjoy time with family, friends, and loved ones in a controlled environment. Experienced owners' needs and wants are evolving, and IYC will evolve with them.

_____________________________________________________ Article & Interview from August 2021

An awards-winning broker, Matthew Stone has devoted more than half his life to the yachting industry. Growing up in South Florida, Matthew realized early that he felt more comfortable on the water than on land, so his interest and comfort with sailing became his passion, which became his career. In 2016 that he moved from being a yacht captain to yacht broker, and in 2020, he was nominated for the coveted IYBA (International Yacht Broker’s Association) award for Outstanding Young Professional in Yachting . In both 2018 and 2019, he earned Broker of the Year.

His professional growth accelerated recently, as he now represents IYC, one of the largest and most reputable global brands in the yachting world. IYC  is one of the world’s largest international yachting companies with over 100 professionals based in 14 strategically located offices around the globe. IYC has expanded its geographic footprint in multiple countries and continually invests in the development of proprietary software solutions to deliver advice, insight, and support to yacht owners, buyers, charterers and captains worldwide. In addition, it has been announced IYC will expand its reach to Southern California very soon.

Mr. Stone, as an IYC team member, is deeply committed to his and his clients’ continuing yacht education and has a particular passion for new construction builds. He has toured and learned about new builds from many of the world’s leading international shipyards including Lurssen, Feadship, Heesen, San Lorenzo, Baglietto, and Benetti, all while sharpening his skill set to meet his clients’ growing requirements and interests. In media,  Matthew is a regular on the AWE network TV series, Selling Yachts and has been featured in a variety of industry magazine publications.

JustLuxe recently spoke with him about the future of the yacht industry, and how recent events have affected the industry.

JustLuxe: How has Covid affected the high-end Charter mega-yacht market?

Mr. Stone : Simply put, it has forced the charter market to restructure from charter agreements, sanitation protocols, crew requirements, and the list goes on and on. Fortunately, like most areas of the yachting industry, it has had a positive effect that has allowed for a safer and more controlled environment for our clients. We still face logistical challenges with travel restrictions that are continuously changing. With that said, we're happy to announce that so far in Q3, IYC has surpassed our last three fiscal years.

JustLuxe: In an earlier article about the yachting business, I read that selling a mega-yacht is a lot like selling real estate. Can you discuss this a little?

Mr. Stone : While there are definitely parallels in the process of selling a mega-yacht that would be comparable to selling real estate outside of that, it is notably different. The complexity of buying a yacht is far more rigorous than a house. You're dealing with complex equipment surrounded by saltwater in most cases.

Another example is most people need real estate, you don't need a yacht, and for that reason alone, you may only have a handful of people in the world that could be a prospective client for a particular yacht. Additionally, when purchasing a mega-yacht, you are buying the ultimate luxury asset. Lastly, in my opinion, there is far more emotion when purchasing a yacht; it's a lifestyle, a dream, a passion, and at times there are even elements of impulse. Most people don't impulsively buy real estate.

iyc yacht brokers

JustLuxe : How have you seen the luxury yacht market evolving one the past few years? Or have you at all?

Mr. Stone: Yes, absolutely and in all facets of the industry, starting with construction methods and ending with the consumer.

JustLuxe: Where do you see the high-end charter/mega yacht business going in terms of challenges and solutions?

Mr. Stone : For the charter market, we're going to continue to face logistical challenges with travel restrictions. From the client's, perspective make sure you're working with a reputable company like IYC that has a global presence, so you have the resources and information to make educated decisions on where, when, and which yacht you should charter to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable experience.

The biggest challenge we're facing on the sales side is inventory; it's scarce. But, again, having an experienced broker backed by a reputable brokerage house with a diverse database allows you to find opportunities that wouldn't normally be available.

iyc yacht brokers

JustLuxe :   Do you see the buyers of these vessels changing in terms of their needs and wants in yachts?

Mr. Stone :Yes, now more than ever. Clients' desires to be in congested ports are becoming less appealing with an increased appetite for remote destinations, impacting their needs and expectations of the yacht's capabilities.

JustLuxe: Finally, where do you see the high-end yacht market growing or not in the next five years?

Mr. Stone: We do not doubt that the yachting market will continue to grow. We will continue to see new buyers enter the marketplace who want to enjoy time with family, friends, and loved ones in a controlled environment. Experienced owners' needs and wants are evolving. New products are entering the market, appealing to a wider audience. Economists suggest that the economic expansion that started in mid-2020 will continue, the GDP has recovered to pre-pandemic levels. Our industry has adapted and evolved to the times and will continue to do so.

Charter yacht Africa currently on the market with IYC

Why the future of chartering is in Greek waters

Nestled in the heart of the Mediterranean, Greece has become a desired tourist destination and is conveniently positioned at the centre of the bustling yachting season each summer. A testament to this is the annual Mediterranean Yacht Show (MEDYS), now in its ninth edition and returning to Nafplio from 27 April to 1 May 2024, having become an increasingly prominent event in the yacht charter calendar in recent years. With a staggering 245 per cent surge in its charter yacht fleet since 2015, BOAT turns to the expertise of leading brokerage firm IYC to decipher the currents shaping the Greek charter market.

Riding the wave of demand

Xenia Tsipidou, senior charter manager at IYC, paints a picture of remarkable growth in the Greek charter market, driven by local demand and an expanding international clientele, which is expected to increase as we approach MEDYS 2024 and welcome sunnier days in Greece. “In 2023, the East Mediterranean region (encompassing Greece, Croatia and Turkey) retained its top position in terms of bookings, with a market growth of 51 per cent, up from 48 per cent in 2022,” says Tsipidou. “Within this, Greece commands a substantial 29 per cent share and Greece continues to reign as the leading global charter destination, with a further two per cent increase in market share observed in 2023.”

The recent legislative changes allowing foreign-flagged vessels to engage in commercial operations in Greece have further fuelled this growth. IYC’s success demonstrates this, with $103 million total value of charter fees booked in 2023, equating to over 5,000 days of charter booked. “IYC’s growth in this market has been tremendous due to the combination of an outstanding team, growing fleet and an increased charter demand throughout and post-COVID, reaching an exceptional 300 per cent growth between 2018 and 2023 in Greece alone,” explains Raphael Sauleau, CEO of IYC. “This clearly shows the appetite for this destination and the tremendous changes it is going through on all fronts.”

This surge in interest is prominently reflected in digital platforms, with IYC securing $8 million in total charter revenue online. Renowned for its commitment to innovation, IYC stands as a vanguard in digital advancements within the yacht charter industry. At the forefront of its digital arsenal is the 'reserve' feature on its website, offering clients a convenient way to secure their ideal charter yacht. Additionally, IYC boasts BLUE, its cutting-edge AI ‘virtual yacht manager’. This technology supports senior crew and yacht managers in navigating the complexities of daily onboard tasks, enhancing the onboard experience for both crew and guests.

Catering to an evolving market

When it comes to market research, IYC is at the forefront. With 15 offices in 10 countries and a team of over 160 passionate employees, the firm monitors the global market to spot new trends. Anna Michail, senior charter manager, sheds light on shifting trends, noting that with a greater choice in yachts available to charter, there is a growing emphasis on cost-consciousness amongst customers with a “notable inclination towards securing the best deals”. Additionally, Michail notes a preference for new-build or newly refitted boats, mirroring the desire for “modern amenities and well-maintained vessels” and “reduced fuel consumption and minimised environmental impact”.

Aside from vessel preferences, Fotis Geranios, head of charter management Greece, underscores some of the popular experiential requests, with increased demand for an expanded array of amenities to entertain guests. “There is a notable shift towards exploring alternative itineraries that offer a blend of cultural immersion and exclusivity. This includes visits to archaeological marvels, secluded locales and pristine destinations,” he says. “Land-based activities are also gaining in popularity, which complements their seafaring adventures. From exhilarating horseback riding excursions to enriching museum visits and indulgent wine-tasting sessions, guests are seeking diverse opportunities to engage with Greek culture and heritage.”

Despite representing the largest fleet in the world, boasting over 160 charter yachts in its fleet, IYC is committed to providing a tailored, “boutique” approach to every charter. With just seven yachts entrusted to one manager, it ensures that every client receives the very best service possible.

Connecting to the growing charter market

MEDYS stands as a cornerstone event in the charter calendar, welcoming the start of the summer season. Whilst it is a showcase of the industry’s spectacular selection of charter yachts on the market, it is also a celebration of Greece's rich maritime heritage and cultural treasures. “The show offers a lineup of yachts for the brokers’ inspection who travel from different countries all over the world in order to visit the most luxurious fleet of yachts in the Greek market,” Geranios notes. “The number of attending brokers and attending yachts is impressive, placing MEDYS in one of the most successful yacht shows worldwide.”

This year promises an impressive lineup and IYC is leading the charge with the largest display at the event. Visitors can expect a diverse selection of almost 30 superyachts, including 59.3-metre Idyllic , 54.7-metre Rare Find , 49.8-metre Almyra II , 50-metre Zia and 49.9-metre Ouranos .

To book an appointment with IYC at MEDYS, contact the team today . Alternatively, you can view the firm’s vast array of superyachts available to charter this season on the IYC website .
