The new Outremer 52 takes on all the knowledge from the companies previous successes, the Outremer 51 and 55

outremer 52 catamaran

Product Overview

Grand Large Yachting has pooled serious knowledge, design and build experience to create what it deems to be an ideal family-sized fast catamaran for world voyaging. The Outremer 52 combines the proven features of the 51 (over 100 built) with the fresh looks and success of the recently launched 55, which won a European Yacht of the Year award last year.

Outremer is targeting 10-12 knot average speeds for this new model: “250 miles a day is enough for comfort and performance,” said Outremer CEO, Xavier Desmarest, at the Cannes Yachting Festival unveiling.

Its sister company, Gunboat, was involved to help lighten the structures while increasing stiffness, including the use of carbon bulkheads. The weight saved in structure allows more volume with slightly wider upper parts of the hull, and openings and glass surfaces have been increased. In comparison to the 51 it is actually slightly heavier, but carries more sail area.

VPLP, which spent two and a half years developing the design with Franck Darnet and Patrick Le Quément, expects the performance to be similar if not slightly better than the 51. Sightlines and communication are also improved, with forward visibility from the bar area and saloon seating, and there are four opening ports in the saloon for ventilation.

outremer 52 catamaran

Wheel and tiller options are offered or, uniquely, a choice of both on either side, while mechanical steering should bring the sporty feel for which the brand is renowned. The layout sees three or four cabins and three different ‘moods’ or styles. And, like on the larger sister, a utility cabin option is offered so owners can choose an office, workroom, laundry or kids’ cabin.

The standard boat will have diesel engines, but the Grande Motte yard insists the yacht’s ability to sail well means these will be little used. It does already offer electric propulsion alternatives and – as seen on Roland Jourdain’s new 5X We Explore, which uses lots of flax fibre – it is increasingly building with recycled or recyclable materials. The 51 has the potential to mount 2,100W solar panels, an option all owners are reportedly choosing.

Outremer is continuing to increase its production capacity to try to meet the insatiable demand for its performance catamarans, but insists it will maintain its direct customer contact approach. The first boat is in build and will debut at the International Multihull Show in April 2023.

First look: Outremer 52 – serious adventure catamaran

If you’re after a serious round-the-world adventure and have the budget for a boat like this, the Outremer 52 could well be the cat you're looking for

outremer 52 catamaran

Product Overview

Multihulls are clearly booming. They’ve been popular as charter boats for a long time, thanks to the sheer amount of real estate they offer, and the appeal of life on an even keel. The high-volume charter boats haven’t, however, done much to improve multihulls’ reputation for aesthetics or performance.

Outremer catamarans are cut from a different cloth. Light and fast, they are aimed at performance cruising with double-figure speeds, while still being comfortable to live aboard and without being extreme machines. They are serious blue-water cruising boats and are increasingly popular, albeit at a price that puts them on a par with the priciest top-end luxury monohulls.

French boat builder and owner of several mulithull brands, Grand Large Yachting has pooled serious knowledge, design and build experience to create what it deems to be an ideal family-sized fast catamaran for world voyaging. Outremer as a brand focuses on lightweight designs.

The Outremer 52 combines the proven features of the 51 (over 100 built) with the fresh looks and success of the recently launched 55, which won a European Yacht of the Year award last year.

Outremer is aiming for 10-12 knot average speeds for this new model: ‘250 miles a day is enough for comfort and performance,’ said Outremer CEO, Xavier Desmarest, at the unveiling at Cannes Yachting Festival.

Its sister company, Gunboat, was involved to help lighten the structures while increasing stiffness, including the use of carbon bulkheads. The weight saved in structure allows more volume with slightly wider upper parts of the hull, and openings and glass surfaces have been increased.

Wheel and tiller options are offered or, uniquely, a choice of both on either side, while mechanical steering delivers the sporty feel for which the brand is renowned. The layout sees three or four cabins and three different ‘moods’ or styles. And, in line with its larger sister, a utility cabin option is offered so owners can choose an office, workroom, laundry or kids’ cabin.

The first boat has now been launched, although there is a four-year wait for those ordering now.

If you’re after a serious round-the-world adventure and have the budget for a boat like this, you’ll cover the ground at serious speed and in real comfort.

Yacht review outremer 52, technical data outremer 52.

Outremer means overseas in French and is used specifically as a term for the parts of France outside Europe. These include, for example, Guadeloupe and Martinique in the Caribbean, New Caledonia in the South Pacific or La Réunion in the Indian Ocean, to name but a few. Places and areas that are on the bucket list of many long-distance sailors.

Outremer Catamarans builds ocean-going twin-hull boats that allow you to reach these destinations safely and reliably, but also comfortably and, above all, quickly. High performance potential thanks to sporty hull designs, powerful sailing plans and a consistently implemented lightweight construction are part of Outremer's DNA, as is a sophisticated cosiness for high demands and relaxed sea voyages. The shipyard in La Grande-Motte in the south of France has been building exclusive performance cruisers on two hulls since 1984, and more than 300 boats have been launched to date. The brand currently has three models on offer: the Outremer 45, the flagship 55 and the brand new Outremer 52.

High demand for the Outremer 52

Since 2007, Outremer Catamarans has been part of the Grand Large Yachting group, together with other blue water brands such as Allures Yachting, Garcia Yachts and RM Yachts. Gunboat, manufacturer of large and exclusive high-performance catamarans made of carbon fibre, is also part of the shipyard group and produces together with Outremer at the same shipyard site in La Grande-Motte. Naturally, both companies can benefit from each other in terms of purchasing and the exchange of technologies and expertise.

There are currently 72 orders. The shipyard must now further expand its production capacities

However, space on the site is now becoming scarce due to the very good order situation for both brands. With 72 boats of the new Outremer 52 type alone currently on order, capacity is more than exhausted. Grand Large Yachting therefore recently acquired Outremer's main competitor, Marsaudon Composites in Lorient on the Atlantic. Production of the small Outremer 45 is now being relocated there in order to create new production volumes for the 52 in La Grande-Motte and thus reduce delivery times to a sufficient level.

Slim catamaran hulls for good sailing performance

The three current Outremer models show great homogeneity in terms of concept, design and appearance. Typical of the brand are the rather short, dome-shaped deckhouses with large window fronts and a bimini roof that extends far aft. In addition, the hulls of Outremer boats are unusually slim compared to conventional cruising catamarans, with extremely long foredeck sections. And they are fitted with retractable centreboards for good sailing characteristics downwind. The designs for the newer Outremer 55 and 52 models now come from the renowned VPLP Design studio. Previously, catamaran experts Christophe Barreau and Frédéric Neumann collaborated on the designs, and the Outremer 45, the smallest boat, still bears their signature.

Another Outremer trademark is the two helm stations with seats, which are mounted aft on the hulls and are therefore largely free-standing. As a special feature, the shipyard can offer its multihulls with either wheel or tiller steering. Combinations are also possible, such as on the test ship, where a wheel is mounted on the starboard side and a tiller on the port side. This provides more variety for the helmsman, who can steer according to his mood. For a relaxed steering position, benches for two people are bolted to the deck on both sides. This is a great place to sit in the wind when the weather is nice and warm and also very comfortable.

The steering column can also be folded inwards into the cockpit. This allows different steering positions. The plotter swivels with

On the Outremer 55 and 52 models, the steering column on the starboard side can also be folded inwards. This allows the helmsman to steer from the sheltered cockpit in rough conditions and bad weather, while still maintaining a good view forwards through the large window fronts in the cabin superstructure. A very well-functioning system and possibly a pioneering idea from Outremer.

Good equipment, many options

The test of the new Outremer 52 takes place in front of the shipyard in La Grande-Motte, with a sea breeze of around 4 Beaufort and only a few waves. The catamaran reaches 7.7 knots on an angle of around 50 degrees to the true wind direction. With the gennaker set and a true wind angle of 100 to 120 degrees, the log quickly climbs into the double-digit range. The performance values are undoubtedly good for a cat of this size, but are also within the expected range, especially in view of the good equipment of the test boat with a significant upgrade of the sail wardrobe.

The basic version of the Outremer 52 is equipped with a self-tacking jib. The overlapping genoa is an option, but is particularly worthwhile for use in the light wind areas of the Mediterranean. However, the shipyard only mounts fixed hoisting points on the coachroof for this, not adjustable ones. Active, sporty sailors would want this. The lightweight carbon rig instead of the standard aluminium mast has the advantage that the boat pitches and lurches significantly less in the waves, which is generally an issue with catamarans. The shipyard can also rig the boat with a rotating carbon fibre profile wing mast on special request, which will undoubtedly provide a considerable increase in performance, but is also challenging to handle and costs around 150,000 euros more.

The shipyard does not cut corners when it comes to the equipment on deck and utilises the highest quality and most select components. In short: only the best is good enough here. Harken and Antal fittings, which appear to be oversized rather than undersized for their application, are part of Outremer's standard equipment ex shipyard. In addition, there are large 60 mm winches for the sheets and halyards with the option of operating them electrically at the touch of a button. The high quality of the attachments, their size and flawless positioning on deck ensure that manoeuvres run smoothly, even without much effort.

However, because the mainsheet and the important traveller on the aft beam are operated from the cockpit and the sheet and halyard winches on the cabin superstructure are not within direct reach of the helmsman, he often has to leave his position at the wheel or tiller when travelling with a small crew or alone.

Outremer favours lightweight construction despite many reinforcements

The centreboards in the hull replace the stub keels normally found on catamarans and limit drift downwind. If you want to utilise the full performance potential of the catamaran and sail actively, you can raise the centreboard fully or partially upwind to reduce drag. In practice, however, the centreboards usually stay down and are only raised to reduce the draft. Incidentally, the centreboards are very light and symmetrically profiled. In the event of damage due to a collision, they can be easily removed and reinstalled in the other hull.

Because the long, slender hulls protrude a long way and the structurally load-bearing platform in between is short in comparison, the construction is exposed to high torsional loads in wind and waves, which can only be absorbed by very robust and rigid structures. Outremer therefore reinforces the hulls built using the vacuum infusion process with solid, continuous longitudinal stringers and laminates strong, torsion-resistant bulkheads with carbon reinforcements. At the same time, the French emphasise a weight-saving design. The entire deck and the cabin superstructure with bimini roof are also manufactured using the vacuum infusion process. The interior is also focussed on weight and lightweight composite materials are used for the furniture.

The large windows provide light and transparency in the well-ventilated saloon. The all-round view from the navigation table and inside helm station is phenomenal

The sporty line costs space

The Outremer 52 can be fitted with either three or four double cabins. Variants are provided for the foredeck in the port hull. As an alternative to the double cabin, it is possible to set up a workshop, an office, a walk-in wardrobe or a cabin with bunk beds for the children. The toilet and washroom as well as the shower are installed in the port hull as two fully insulated bathrooms. This is particularly convenient when both double cabins are occupied.

Nevertheless, in terms of accommodation, the Outremer with its slim hulls cannot stand up to comparison with the very voluminous touring catamarans of the same size. The boats from Lagoon or Fountaine Pajot, for example, offer extended versions with three to six cabins, each with its own wet room, from a hull length of 50 feet.

Top equipment and workmanship

The Outremer 52 is praised for its good, solid build quality. The craftsmanship is impeccable, even down to the smallest detail. The technical installations for the water supply and electricity are also a pleasure. The components are very neatly and clearly installed and are easy to reach. The Outremer also offers excellent ventilation thanks to the numerous windows and hatches in all living areas. Only in the bathroom and especially in the shower room on the port side are the ventilation options limited.

All in all, the Outremer is unrivalled on the market

Buyers must be able to afford around 1.6 million euros for an Outremer 52 in the basic configuration. That's a lot of money, of course, but it's also a lot of money for a boat that is extremely high-quality, comprehensively equipped and almost ready to sail straight from the shipyard. There are also few comparable boats. Brands such as Catana, Dazcat or HH could be mentioned as possible competitors, but they build their boats on completely different foundations and standards. Seen in this light, Outremer serves a niche market, albeit for a demand that is evidently growing.

Sailing performance

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and why you chose Outremer for your next boat? Just a quick summary. You had a FP Saona 47 previously, right? A little about us… Holly is from the US and Stephane is from France. When we’re not cruising we live in the mountains ‘Lake Tahoe’, but for many years we lived and worked in the San Francisco Bay Area.

We bought a production boat (Fountaine Pajot Saona 47) back in 2020 and after two seasons cruising the Med we validated we were following the right dream but we also concluded we would need a different boat for our long term cruising plans of doing a circumnavigation.

We really liked what Outremer had done with the Outremer 55 so we reached out to them to find out about their plans for the next Outremer 51.

outremer 52 catamaran

Why did you choose the Outremer 52? Were you looking at other brands? Yes, we looked at Outremer first given their solid reputation, they are known to produce some of the  best catamarans  for blue water cruising. We established a baseline from all the information we gathered directly from Outremer and from Outremer owners we met while cruising and before the start of the GLYWO, and then looked at other performance catamaran manufacturers to see if anything could beat the Outremer package.

We did a  video  on our thought process. We essentially were looking for a performance catamaran that would keep all of its performance characteristics with a 3T loading capacity.

How are you expecting the performance of this boat compared to the Saona 47? Do you have different plans for your Outremer? We learned that we liked to sail a lot more and motor a lot less. We wanted a catamaran with a bigger range of sailing in various conditions: in light winds, upwind, in strong winds and in big sea sates. Being able to easily sail at double digit average speeds opens up quite a bit your cruising options. It was also important for us to experience the ‘joy’ of sailing while we cruise and those boats communicate with you.

In our  Saona 47 , we needed 8-9 knots of wind before we could think of sailing and way too often we would find ourselves putting one engine on to help the boat. On an Outremer, if there is a little breeze you just put the sails up and you start moving almost at wind speed. Our experience comes from sailing on Outremer 45, 4X, 51 and 55 during Outremer Academy weekends and Outremer Weeks.

Our cruising plan to keep sailing around the planet remains unchanged but now we feel confident we’re on the perfect platform to do just that.

outremer 52 catamaran

When will she launch? Congratulations by the way! Awen – Outremer 52 #4 will be splashed at the end of May 2023 and be delivered to us at then end of July 2023.

Which configuration did you go for and why? 3 Cabins, 4 Cabins etc. Did you go for the “My Free Space” modular concept? We opted for the 3 cabin version, same as our previous catamaran. On the starboard side will be the owner’s hull and on the port side we will have 2 cabins: a regular aft cabin and a custom forward cabin with a bunk bed, a wardrobe, a desk/workbench and a multitude of storage. Outremer gives you different options to choose from, like MFS Kids or MFS Desk/Bunkbed, to customize the forward cabin, they call it “My Free Space (MFS)”.

outremer 52 - My Free Space concept

Can you give us an idea of the options you prioritised on the gear? Eg electric winches, engine upgrade, carbon upgrades, tillers We focused on optimizing the sailing capabilities by selecting a carbon mast, a genoa with 3D sheeting and a staysail with a hook and furler.

We are still looking at different options for our downwind sail plan: Code 0, downwind gennaker, A2… We keep dreaming about the carbon crossbeam but it comes with a steep price tag so for now we keep on dreaming…

The Outremer comes standard with a canting wheel on the starboard side and we opted for the tiller option with the double seat on the port side.

We initially tried to keep the electric winches to a minimum to save weight and cost but we are now planning to add more electric winches to make the boat easy to sail with only one person.

outremer 52 catamaran

How about options for the living space? Telescopic table? Furnishings etc We opted to have a convertible table with a mattress both in the salon and in the cockpit. We chose those options primarily to have other sleeping options while the other person is on watch or to simply relax, but that also means we could have have up to 9 people sleeping on the boat if you include the three cabins.

We opted for the ‘sport’ interior design package as we think it’s more modern. The O52 comes with ample storage, lighting, etc.

What did you prioritise on the electrical equipment? Watermaker, extra fridge, freezer, washing machine, dishwasher, microwave, A/C, heating, electric heads (fresh/seawater) Induction stovetop and electric convection/microwave combo, 12V watermaker, fridge, freezer, A/C in salon and owners’ hull for the times we have to be in a marina or to dehumidify and cool off the boat before going to sleep, electric heads, water filter for drinking water between tanks and sink, and a small washing machine.

outremer 52 catamaran

How about the power system? Invertor, service battery upgrade, lithium upgrade? Solar, genset, lighting options, Nav Pack, radar. How much solar will you have on the boat, for example? Early on we decided to go with no generator for weight, maintenance and cost reasons. We also decided to go with no propane or butane so we chose all electric cooking appliances.

The Outremer 52 comes with 2,000 Watts of solar: 800 W on the davits and 1,200 W on the coach roof. We wished Outremer would increase the amount of solar on the davits but they have good reasons to keep the solar array all the way at the back of the boat light and small given these boats are also designed to sail in strong winds and big seas.

We maximized our energy storage with 2 big lithium batteries for a total of 12 kW or 920 Ah. We will have a  Watt&Sea hydrogenerator  to charge the batteries while sailing at night and during cloudy days. We opted for the racing version as it is equipped with a variable pitch propeller, which is important for boats with significant accelerations like Outremers.

We’re going to do some energy consumption simulations with Outremer’s design office but we feel pretty confident about our setup. Plus we also have 2 diesel engines with high output alternators as backups. Those calculations are also going to help use define what inverter(s) we need.

What sail options did you go for? Gennaker? Spinnaker? Genoa or self tacker? Hydranet? The sail selection is a big decision when you buy a performance boat. The first big decision is to decide between the self-tacking solent / code 0 or the genoa / staysail setup. There is no right or wrong decision as your Outremer will be plenty fast regardless.

We have decided to go with the genoa with 3D rigging and staysail setup because Stephane is a former racer and enjoys tweaking the sail trim, because we want to have options to improve our sail trim over the years to become better sailors but also because we expect to sail in stronger winds during our circumnavigation and wanted to have that staysail setup to have a well balanced boat in strong winds.

outremer 52 hull number 2

We also expect to use the staysail on some sailing angles with the downwind gennaker. We’re not racing but why not optimize your sail plan if it is an option, plus it makes for great pictures 😉

We have decided to go with North Sails for our flat sails as they have an awesome reputation for building great sails but also because we got to visit their Minden, Nevada (USA) facility as we happen to live only 30 minutes away. Who knew the biggest and baddest sails in the world were built in the middle of the Nevada desert?

We were truly impressed by the level of technology, plus it will be really cool to go see our sails being fabricated this winter. We have opted for  3Di Ocean  for the material as it has been developed for cruising projects like ours.

outremer 52 catamaran

We still have to make a decision about our downwind sail plan but what we know for sure is that we won’t have a symmetrical spinnaker on board when we leave La Grande Motte. We want to sail angles with this boat to optimize VMG and take advantage of wind shifts.

As we cruise around the world we intend on becoming better sailors. It makes sailing more interesting and knowing how to optimally sail our boat might become helpful if we ever have to escape some bad weather.

Are there any options you think are better to source yourself after the purchase? eg anchor, chain, dinghy, lithium upgrade, solar etc. What kind of anchor/chain set up will you go for? With our previous production boat it was definitely the case. We had a commissioning phase after the boat left the factory and even a post-commissioning phase as some of Fountaine Pajot options are not satisfactory for liveaboards: limited solar, no lithium batteries, low watermaker output, setup for downwind sails…

When you buy an Outremer you buy a semi-custom boat so you have a lot of leeway on how to customize your boat to your needs and desires. You could obviously decide to source and install some options yourself after the purchase and save some money but is it worth it in the end? What you would save in money you would lose in time and after-sales service.

There is one item we’re considering installing at a later time: cork flooring in the cockpit.

We still need to make a decision about our anchor setup. The 2 options offered by Outremer are:

  • 30 kg Spade anchor + 50 m galvanized chain 10 mm diameter + 50 m rope
  • 35 kg Ultramarine 316 stainless steel anchor + 50 m Force 7 chain 8 mm diameter + 50 m rope

On one side you want to keep the boat light, especially on the bow, but you also don’t want to compromise with your anchoring system so you can sleep better at night. Boat option selection is all about trade-offs.

[Anchor update….]

We ended up combining the 2 options suggested by Outremer into 1 ‘upgraded’ package: – 35 kg  Ultra Marine  anchor – 10 mm galvanized chain (instead of 8) – 70 m of chain + 50 m of line.

Now we need to select a secondary anchor. Standard is Fortress 16 kg but never been a fan of this type of anchor.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is outremer-52-9.jpg

What size dinghy will you carry? We really wanted to get another  OC Tender  with our Outremer but in the last couple years the shipping costs have really increased so we opted to buy an inflatable locally and probably get a new OC Tender when we get to New Zealand in a few years.

Outremer offers the Highfield 340 with a Honda 15 hp as an option but we opted for the  3D Tender UL 330  (Ultra Light) with a Honda 10 hp. That’s a total weight saving of 17kg (or 37.5 lbs) all the way at the back of the boat. It will also make dragging the dinghy up the beach a little easier.

We initially considered going electric with the outboard but finally decided to revisit this decision to when we will change dinghy.

How was your experience with Outremer? No dealer! That was a requirement to select our next boat. It is so refreshing to work direct with Outremer and meet the key individuals in the company face to face.

With Outremer you work with a technical project manager who follows your project from the beginning until delivery. We’ve been super happy working with Eloi.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is eloi-outremer.jpg

Anything else you would add to help people thinking of buying an Outremer 52 We would strongly advise people to figure out a way to test sail any boat they plan on buying. If Outremer is on your short list you should definitely plan on coming to La Grande Motte in the south of France for a test sail, to visit the factory and to meet some key individuals face to face.

It is truly amazing how a short sail on an Outremer, either in light air or strong winds, can tell you so much about those boats.

As an alternative, reach out online to some Outremer owners to get some answers to your questions. That’s kind of how we started, by talking to Outremer owners we met while cruising the Mediterranean Sea.

Can you give people who are looking at a Outremer 52 a rough price range for a sensibly optioned boat?  The base price with carbon bulkheads is EUR 1.2M. Because they’re semi-custom boats the final price will vary quite a bit based on how much carbon you add (mast, boom, crossbeam) and what high-tech sail material you select. The rest of the option prices are fairly standard to the boating industry.

All Outremers we’ve sailed on have been plenty fast regardless of options selected but you definitely have ways to move the cursor along the performance spectrum. It’s really a personal decision in the end.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is outremer-52-saloon.jpg

Are there any key areas you are keeping a close eye on in terms of quality checks? We believe the Outremer team and their direct sales/service model is unprecedented in the boating industry. Their commitment to quality and customer satisfaction is beyond anything we have seen or heard from any other vendor.

That alone is worth its weight in gold. As part of your contract, you are asked to bring the boat back after you do a shakedown for a month or two so they can fix anything that comes up in the punch list.

They want you to ultimately leave with everything in order and fixed by the boatyard directly. They do a series of their own quality checks before they hand the boat over to you initially, but then they ask you to come back so they can address anything that comes up in the first couple months of use.

Is there anything else that attracted you to Outremer? eg After sales, training, resale value and so on. Outremer has a commitment to making its customers successful in their project so they offer training courses (for free if you purchase a boat), not only to learn how to sail these boats but for weather, navigation, maintenance, diesel mechanics, safety at sea, medical, etc.

We have gone to many of these and they are invaluable! It is a completely different experience from buying a production boat with a dealer in between you and the boat manufacturer.

Carbon bulkheads  laminated  to the hulls (not glued)

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is outremer-52-carbon_bulkheads.jpg

With Outremer you get all the training you are willing to take across all the topics you would want to prepare yourself for, plus, you get a week during the handover process to learn your boat and its systems and you get access to coaches and teachers for any questions you might have.

This is absolutely a game-changer for couples where one person has more experience than the other person, or where both people are new to sailing.

Outremer boats are also scarce to find used, therefore the resale value is quite good. Also, because of the quality of the boats, they can last decades so many different families can enjoy sailing the same boat around the world.

Outremer offers the same training and service to their second hand boat owners as their first-time owners if you purchase a used boat through them, a huge benefit!

I'm interested in buying this catamaran  but have questions

There are many ways to buy a catamaran and the procedure varies between manufacturers. It's a process that takes time and you should not be afraid of starting talks with the manufacturer.

Here are some common questions you might have:

Can I afford it?  Talk to the manufacturer and they can advise you on financing options.

Can I sail it?  Arrange a test sail with the manufacturer, or ask them directly what kind of support and education they offer for boat buyers.

If you need anything else, be it more details , an introduction to the manufacturer , a shipyard visit , a  test sail , or help with  customatization,  let us know on the Help  M e page after clicking below and we’ll help you take the next step.

Ultimate Cruising? Outremer 52

  • April 12th, 2024
  • Sailing Yacht

You may have read my previous article about the Outremer shipyard , which was very interesting. Now, that I´ve had a insight into how these boats are made, it was clear tome that the team of skilled craftsmen in La Grand Motte not only take pride in their work but as well manage to produce their boats with a very high emphasis on quality. Given the special circumstance and partially kind of worn-down facilities, an even bigger conclusion.

outremer 52 catamaran

A couple of hundred meters further down the road where the marina basin of La Grande Motte harbour was filled up to the maximum with all sorts of catamarans and trimarans for the big “Multicoque” boat show, Outremer had two of their current boats on display. A good chance to see the finished product, the very boat. On the fourth day I finally found some time to go over as for some reason this year we´ve had extraordinarily many visitors from Germany at our Excess catamarans display.

outremer 52 catamaran

The Outremer 55 and 52 were there to visit. Out of the two, the Outremer 52 was the more interesting boat for me. 55 feet in a catamaran is huge. This boat size in a monohull is even a big ass boat, but in a catamaran 55 feet is even much, much bigger. So I thought, the 52 is the more “realistic” boat. Which is in contrast to the sales figures: Out of the current product line of Outremer with the 45, 52 and 55, the most expensive and biggest one is the boat most sold. So let´s check out what the fuzz and all the awards is all about.

52 feet luxury

First of all, the Outremer 52 has won nearly all awards and prizes that can be won in the yachting journalism world. Correspondingly, YouTube and the well-known boat testers were full of praise for this yacht. She really is a beauty seen from outside at a first glance. Her lines clearly feature the Outremer signature whereas the current boat clearly offers much more visual detail and finesse in her appearance.

outremer 52 catamaran

Nearing the boat from abaft, I clearly notice her much wider hulls. I don´t know if its just an impression, but it seems to me that one of the emphasis in designing the 52 could have been to create more internal volume, which of course can only be achieved through wider hulls. The boat appears much more luxurious and comfort-oriented than the Outremer 45 which I´ve had the pleasure to test sail last year.

outremer 52 catamaran

Entering her cockpit area a large L-shaped settee forms the stern end of the boat. The settee is grouped around a versatile cockpit table. This can be transformed into a large dinner table, a small coffee table or put down. When put down, I suppose, extra cushion will transform the settee into a huge lounging area, which people will love at anchor for sure.

outremer 52 catamaran

Apart from the through-passage to the aft transom to portside, the whole cockpit is enclosed all around by a large “coaming” that creates a very “deep” and thus safe feeling here in this area. That is something I also noticed on the 45 and on other catamarans. This contributes to the general feeling of safety onboard a catamaran and should be one of the major points for this type of boat being the yacht of choice especially for families with (young) children.

Modern & cozy: Outremer 52 Salon

The whole backside window front of the salon can be opened by slide-away doors and windows. A simple but clever folding part connects the tabletop area or the galley to a kind of “bar”, creating a lofty, open and connected feeling from the inside to the outside parts of the salon. I also noticed that much less lines, winches and parts from the running rigging are actually inside the cockpit, which is another sign that the Outremer 52 has been re-thought very intensively with the focus on comfort.

outremer 52 catamaran

Entering the salon I was surprised that the designers did not “fill up” the available interior volume. In most catamarans the salon is fitted with a large table, settee, a nav station, large galley and many more “must-haves” so that even on bigger sized cats the available volume is eaten up very fast. Not so on this catamaran. The salon retains a light, open and surprisingly un-cramped appearance.

outremer 52 catamaran

There´s a nice little L-settee to starboard side which could host a full-sized dinner party but I guess since most of the owners are sailing couples with occasional guests and most of the fun takes place outside, the shipyard just skipped the idea of providing a full-fledged dinner area. This couch is just fine for the lone night watch or a great morning coffee – life takes place outside.

outremer 52 catamaran

I love the nav-station on the Outremer 52! The pivoting Captain´s chair is much more than just a makeshift alibi stool, a large chart plotter and secondary instruments make voyage planning, paper works and even standing a foul weather watch a delight here, I am sure. There´s a perfect almost 360-degree view through the large windows. These are non-darkened and non-angled so that rain may drain faster and no reflections may hinder a proper navigation.

An odd galley

The galley though … I don´t know, that was the one place where I do have some problems with. I mean, for a luxury high-quality upper brand 7-digit budget boat (and for sure she is worth the money!) this galley is not very thought through in my eyes. I know, the designers and engineers will of course have their reasons for putting things where they are, but, well, come on … this is the weak point of the Outremer 52.

outremer 52 catamaran

There is stowage and volume practically everywhere, sure. The fridges and freezers available are exemplary and the ship´s cook aboard the Outremer won´t have any hustle with stowing away the provisions for even long trips, I am sure. The problem will be the cooking itself. Since I am a passionate cook myself and fancy preparing food underway, I saw this the second I entered the room.

outremer 52 catamaran

Placing the stove at the one least practical place is just crazy. Cooking a meal that needs two or more pots will just be a nightmare. The position of the stove – although I understand that itt needs some fittings and installations underneath it – in the farthest corner of the tabletop just doesn´t work. That´s the worst place imaginable, even for me as a tall man. For smaller cooks, this will be an ordeal. Also, the oven is so much down it´s almost even with the floor. The ergonomics of this galley are a disappointment I must say – how much worse would have the alternatives been if this is the best solution the designers and engineers can come up with? I hope that owner´s and prospects´ feedback may lead to an improved version of this galley.

Daggerboard catamarans

But let´s leave it there and not focus on the bad things. Besides the galley, honestly, I haven´t found any more. In the catamaran cruising “community” – and that is also the impression I get when talking to our prospects – the brand Outremer stands primarily for performance. There is a sense of awe and respect for their “legendary” sailing capabilities which is partially a product of Outremer´s daggerboards.

outremer 52 catamaran

These are skipped for the sake of creating even more volume inside for most of the production catamarans and fully cruising oriented boats, but of course Outremer won´t cancel these even in their new more comfort-oriented boats. Since my own sailing experiences with cruising cats I know how much better the upwind performance of a catamaran becomes when it is fitted with daggerboards – but also, how much more skilled skipper and crew will have to be and how much volume is lost inside for the housings of those parts. Inside the Outremer 52 the volume lost does not seem all-too much. The designers managed to “hide” away the housings very elegantly in a visual way. In both hulls they don´t bother free passage and there´s lots of stowage anyway.

outremer 52 catamaran

I really liked the way it is done on the 52. Remembering the interior of the Outremer 45, it was much, much more cramped. Going from stern to bow in the hulls meant to perform a Zigzag to go by the daggerboard housings. Looking through from back to front was impossible. That´s a thing of the past on the 52: You can enjoy a perfect unblocked view which helps to create a lofty, light-suffused feeling down below.

Spacy owner´s hull and cabins

Catamaran sailing for most crews mean perfect weather, sunshine, warm temperatures and leisure time. Coconut route, Caribbean sailing or dropping the anchor at a nice bay. Sailing a catamaran for the most part is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. Thus: Most of the onboard life is taking place outside and up on deck.

outremer 52 catamaran

I personally think that boat testers too much focus on the size of a cabin down below. I mean, usually people are unconscious there (hence: They sleep) or they just spend some brief time down there to change the clothing. I´d say you spend less time in your cabin than in a hotel room during a weekend trip to a nice city. It is indeed important to have a nice hotel room – but how much of a big sized room do you really need?

outremer 52 catamaran

So, in the Outremer 52 the cabins are just as fine. The beds – thank God no island bed-stuff or other ridiculous “marketing”-souced installations – take the most area they can cover. There´s so much stowage down there. I loved the nice big hull windows which, also by my own experience, significantly boost the feeling of comfort, the perceived safety and overall the joy of enjoying a luxury view outside so much! By the way, not having any hull windows is the one and only real downside of my upcoming own new boat …

Room with a view …

Speaking of perceived luxury, I absolutely loved the owner´s bathroom setup on the Outremer 52! Which again is something that in my eyes is often over-stretched for boat tests. In the end, a bathroom should be practical and safe (more so in heavy weather) to guarantee that the occupants can co about their needs in a safe manner. That´s it.

outremer 52 catamaran

The normal usage for a boat´s bathroom is taking a pee or a dump , washing your hands and face, maybe occasionally enjoy a hot shower and of course have a place where wet clothing can be hung for drying. On the Outremer 52 they have taken this to a new level. The bathroom is just gorgeous! A nicely sized closed off shower cabin, a sink and the toilet.

outremer 52 catamaran

The toilet is just awesome. Although I like sitting down and having the “business” aligned with the ship´s longitudinal axis, this one is angled 90 degrees to face directly outwards. Sitting down here will have your eyes exactly matching the height of the large hull window. What a breathtaking view this must be underway! And how much more “fun” taking a dump any crew and guest aboard the Outremer will have. Well done!

outremer 52 catamaran

A nice detail in the guest´s hull shower was the emergency escape window, which on the Outremer 52 is featuring a hammer-free opening mechanism. Since I´ve tested smashing an escape hatch window myself last year with some depressing and really not very funny outcome, this is a very important detail worth noting on this catamaran.

Sailing performance – a true Outremer?

I´ve watched many videos on the sailing performance of this catamaran and for sure this boat will sail just as fine. Sadly, this year I couldn´t manage to attend a sea trial, the shipyard offered such ventures on their Outremer 55, but the bare numbers speak for themselves: 155 square meters upwind sails area (Genoa + main sail) and a displacement of 13/17 tons is as much power as you can imagine. For comparison, Lagoon´s top-seller 55 has some 180 square meters of sail area but hauls almost 30 tons through the water …

outremer 52 catamaran

Visually, the Outremer 52 is still easily recognizable. The large front windows are a signature feature of this brand and a nod to her various predecessors which have done so much to build up the amazing reputation and value of the brand Outremer. The windows, as you may have seen on the shots from inside, make for a perfect view from both outside and also a as much as possible unhindered through-view.

outremer 52 catamaran

Entering up on the coachroof is done by utilizing the steps of a simple lightweight steel ladder. This one is black so that it perfectly blends in visually and won´t destroy the clean looks. I also love the way Outremer has fitted the rail for the self-tacking jib on top of the coach roof so that the sail and the car won´t mingle as well. Well done!

Main helm station aboard Outremer 52

Another great feature and purposeful break with some old traditions is the helm station aboard the Outremer 52. Unless being a flybridge catamaran, a boat always features two helm stations for a good reason. Depending on the side of the tack, almost always one half of the front view is blocked by the sails – the leeward side of course. So, accordingly, the helmsman will change sides to windward to have a clear view. Not so much on the Outremer 52.

outremer 52 catamaran

There is only one main helm station with a steering wheel available. It´s situated on the starboard side, of course, the one and only location where our ancestral Viking predecessors wanted to have it placed. This is done because most of the time, as the shipyard says, the autopilot is steering anyway. For the other occasions, the helmsman will have a perfectly thought-through steering station on the Outremer 52´s starboard side. And there´s even more.

outremer 52 catamaran

The steering wheel is pivoting. A simple mechanism allows the wheel to be put into three positions. Down into the cockpit for bad weather handling or motoring, up (like shown in the picture) for the helmsman to stand up, leaning into a nice granny bar-like stand and active sailing and there´s even a third position. The wheel can be put leaning outward for leisure steering whilst sitting on the large steering bench. A nice, versatile concept.

outremer 52 catamaran

As mentioned before, I noticed that most of the lines of the running rigging have kind of “disappeared” from the cockpit. This was one thing that I found a bit odd when sailing the Outremer 45: I imagined being underway with kids. With all those loose ends and lines around in the cockpit area, that´s a recipe for trouble if not disaster. It seems that the designers have solved this for the 52.

outremer 52 catamaran

So, no more portside steering? Well, not at all! The shipyard has installed the same nice 2-seater bench on top of the rear deck as well and … a tiller ! This can be fun! When sailing fast and “actively”, maybe during a battle with a fellow co-sailing boat on the same course, standing here and enjoying the direct feel of a tiller can be lots of fun for sure. Although I doubt that this feature is used so much in reality.

outremer 52 catamaran

The view though from those steering benches is just awesome! I reclined, put up my feet and imagined myself sailing along leisurely with a 12 knot SOG, having a fresh hot coffee in my hands enjoying this breathtaking view … almost as perfect as it can be, I´d say! Even in this crowded basin of the boat show, this view is amazing.

Is the Outremer 52 the ultimate cruising catamaran?

So, is the Outremer 52 the ultimate cruising catamaran? According to all the prizes won, the fuzz that is made online and the praise this catamaran receives unilaterally, she indeed might be. There aren´t all too many catamarans comparable to the Outremer 52 – offering this level of sailing performance whilst retaining such high levels of comfort. I really liked the craftsmanship and finishing of the build. My impression from visiting the shipyard was that the end product should be an almost perfectly build boat – and this expectation has been fulfilled.

outremer 52 catamaran

The Outremer 52 indeed offers a high level of comforts. She is a huge step up from the 45 which is much, much more sailing-oriented in my eyes. The Outremer 45 – which I fancy more since she is the more lively and performant boat – demands for an active skipper and very considerate and attentive crew. The Outremer 52 however seems to be much more relaxed.

outremer 52 catamaran

After visiting the 52 I go back to my own stand, taking a short detour to stroll around the Outremer 45 that is moored a bit outside of the show. As much as I like the modern, very appealing design of 52 and the 55, it is clearly the 45 that attracts me more. I don´t know (as I am not a cat-type) but she seems to be the much less “frills” boat, I like her simple yet classy design and the sailing aspect of the boat. But that´s the good thing about boating, right? Everybody gets to choose what fits him most.

Outremer 52

In MW184, we talked about the launch of the one-hundredth Outremer 51. This was the model that had become the yard's best-seller (originally out of the Outremer 49) having been first launched in 2009 and having undergone three major redesigns. The question of a successor obviously arouses interest... And the answer was provided by Xavier Desmarest himself, the CEO of Outremer: the new 52, already in build, is due to splash at the end of January 2023.

The shipyard was keen to work with naval architects VPLP, along with the big names in French design (Patrick Le Quément, Darnet Design, Saguez & Partners), and also with the expertise of the Gunboat shipyard (also a member of the Grand Large Yachting Group), making it possible to reduce the weight of the structure while retaining its ultimate strength. This has allowed for increased glass surfaces and openings in the catamaran. With the aim of easier control of the Outremer 52, sail handling and trimming maneuvers are led back to the cockpit. Like the Outremer 55, the wheel, positioned on the starboard side, guarantees perfect control of the multihull with exceptional visibility of the sailplan. It can also be placed in a low position in the cockpit to ensure protection from the sun or from bad weather - the helmsman is then sheltered by the rigid bimini. The two tillers remain a feature at the after end of the hulls. Inside, there’s to be a neat forward-facing bench seat, four openings at the front of the saloon and an XXL-sized bay window that opens onto the cockpit. On deck, for optimizing living comfort at anchor without compromising the safety of the crews when under way, direct access to the water now being made safer by the modular seat above the port side sugarscoop. The builder has always offered the possibility of customizing your catamaran, and the Outremer 52 is no exception, being available in three finishes - Life, Nomad and Sportline. Outremer has designed a modular space called My Free Space. Located in the forward port cabin, this space can be arranged in different ways - double cabin, office, workshop, dressing room, etc. The sail area/displacement ratio, comparable to that of the Outremer 51, guarantees excellent performance - even upwind thanks to the daggerboards. 6. First look: Outremer 52

  8. Boat Review by Multihulls World of: Catamaran Outremer 52

The wave-piercing bows, the chines above the waterline, the daggerboards and the generous sail wardrobe are all the ingredients required for a great time on the water. From the medium conditions upwards, averages of ten knots or more are the menu for the Outremer 52. The ease with which this is possible, will make long-distance sailing ...

  9. Outremer 52

  10. Genesis of the Outremer 52

To define this new model, we brought together the dream team that made the 55′ a success: VPLP, Patrick Le Quément and Darnet Design, and included a group of future owners in the process. Although inspired by the innovations of the Outremer 55, the Outremer 52 was the result of a thorough reflection, punctuated by a lot of customer feedback.

  14. Ultimate Cruising? Outremer 52

The Outremer 55 and 52 were there to visit. Out of the two, the Outremer 52 was the more interesting boat for me. 55 feet in a catamaran is huge. This boat size in a monohull is even a big ass boat, but in a catamaran 55 feet is even much, much bigger. So I thought, the 52 is the more "realistic" boat.

  15. Outremer 52
