The story of the Phinisi

Phinisi Schooners are wooden two-mast vessels. Traditionally, these schooners are made from tropical “Iron Wood”. The term “Phinisi” technically refers to the rig itself. However, in reality, the word describes the gaff-ketch type of rig. Around Bira, in South Sulawesi, the crafting of Phinisi Schooners has been handed down for countless generations. This ship-building culture originates from a myth based on the creation of the first boat ever built by their ancestors. Mystical beliefs and the mythology surrounding the boat – building still permeate the crafting process. Today, these beautifully handcrafted vessels have blended luxury modern comforts with traditional craftsmanship birthing a truly unique experience. They can be seen sailing around Indonesia and other parts of the world, we would like to welcome you onboard Australia’s first luxury Phinisi voyage.

About Phinisi yachts

For centuries, the Phinisi yachts, also called Sulawesi Schooners or Palari, have been cruising throughout the Indonesian archipelago. The Phinisi reflects a rich maritime heritage that has been an integral part of Indonesia’s culture and history. In 2017, the Art of Boatbuilding in South Sulawesi was even inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (UNESCO).

What are Phinisis?

Historically, the design of Phinisi boats has evolved from single-masted sailing vessels to the more common two-masted vessels seen today. Phinisis are made from tropical ironwood (known locally as ‘ulin’) and teak. Their design includes a distinctive curved stern and prow. The two masts have seven sails, allowing them to maneuver effectively in the Indonesian seas. The term “pinisi” technically refers to the rig itself. However, in reality, the word describes the gaff-ketch type of rig.

Traditional Phinisi building

The traditional crafters of these vessels are, among other tribes, the Bugi people from South Sulawesi. In general, four distinct cultural sub-sets exist that are specialized in building the traditional boats; The Konjo , Mandar , Bugis and Makassarese .

Around Bira, in South Sulawesi, the crafting of Phinisis has been handed down for generations and is often carried out only with the most basic tools. The distinct shipbuilding culture originates from a myth based on the creation of the first boat ever built by their ancestors. Mystical beliefs and the mythology of boat building still permeate the entire crafting process. The building process still involves many rituals and ceremonies, highlighting the spiritual bond between the builders and the sea.

Traditional Boat Building in Bira

The Cultural Significance of Phinisi Boats

The cultural significance of Phinisi boat building runs deep in the Bugis and Makassar communities. It is closely tied to their seafaring heritage. For centuries, these communities have relied on Phinisi boats for trade, fishing, and transportation. Furthermore, the vessels have played an important role in their cultural and social practices. In addition to their practical uses, Phinisis are also highly valued for their aesthetic qualities. The boats are often adorned with intricate carvings and brightly painted motifs, which reflect the individual style and personality of the owner.

Century Old Craftsmanship in Sulawesi

Traditional Phinisi Yachts today

The  modern Phinisi is now crafted from Ironwood and Bangkirai, but retains the same unique design, that has been used to sail across the Indonesian Archipelago since the 17th century. Nowadays, the Phinisi boats are a mixture of ancient traditions, combined with modern-day design, amenities, and technology. Luxurious master cabins, beautiful interiors and fine dining are just a few highlights of today’s state of exploring Indonesia on a Phinisi.

However, the boats are more than just sailing vessels. They express the  spirit of Indonesian culture and the continuity of maritime tradition in the modern world of private yacht charters . Chartering a traditional wooden Phinisi in Indonesia is one of the most unique holiday experiences. The freedom you feel and the close connection to nature is indescribable. These yacht charters are suitable for families, honeymoons, and solo travelers.

LAMIMA Luxury Sailing Yacht Charter

Phinisi: A Symbol of Indonesia’s Seafaring Tradition

by LAMIMA | May 1, 2020 | Local Culture

Sailing through East Indonesia’s stunning islands on a grand Phinisi is a sweeping experience that one simply cannot miss. With its massive sails and intricate details, it is bound to transport anyone to a time in history where explorers take on epic adventures in pursuit of discoveries beyond their imagination. Built upon traditions handed down through generations, constructing the Phinisi blends the Indonesian boat builders’ exceptional craftsmanship and respect for nature. Today, this vessel continues to bring wonders to passengers who wish to experience the gallant and exciting lives of the Bugis people—the Phinisi’s original sailors.

A Nautical Heritage

phinisi yachts

The magnificent Phinisi, a symbol of Indonesia’s seafaring heritage, has been sailing along the Southeast Asian archipelago since the 14th century. These enormous ships often made from tropical hardwood were utilized for both transportation and trade, with routes as far as Malacca, Burma, Vietnam, and Australia. The Bugis ethnic group of South Sulawesi, particularly the Konjo people of Ara were known as Phinisi master builders.

A two-masted sailing ship, a Phinisi is usually 20 to 35 meters long with masts towering up to 30 meters and weighs 350 tons. The term “Phinisi” refers to the ship’s gaff-ketch rig type, oftentimes called a seven-sail schooner, for its Dutch-inspired design, which was further adapted to asian building techniques. Its large mainsails and masts forming a tripod shape create a distinctive quality compared to other western boats. Presently, boatbuilding is primarily concentrated in the areas of Tana Beru and Bira, Bulukumba Regency in South Sulawesi.

Phinisi construction has long been a revered tradition that has been passed down from fathers to sons among the South Sulawesi generations. For the Konjo people, building a Phinisi is a process of combined precision, technique, and faithfulness to established ceremonies. The construction period commences with the ritual of identifying which tree they will use as lumber for the keel, the ship’s bottom-most part, which literally translates to “soul of the boat” in their language. This practice highlights the Konjo people’s respect towards nature as the ceremony involves communicating with the tree and asking its permission to be cut down.

Oceans of Wealth and Breakthroughs

As the world’s largest archipelago with over 17,500 islands, Indonesia has developed unique maritime traditions that have endured until now, influencing tourism and offering an incomparable nautical experience to travelers. Its open seas have witnessed the country’s development through acting as a thoroughfare for communication and commerce. Up to this day, one can still marvel at a Phinisi sailing to transport goods or anchoring by the Sunda Kelapa dock in Jakarta and Ujung wharf in Surabaya.

The world’s vast oceans have made great maritime civilizations rise, establish their own seafaring traditions, and set the tone for the modern world’s economic trading and navigational system. The Polynesians of Oceania are said to have been the open oceans’ first navigators. With the stars, sun, and ocean currents as their guide, they made it through Hawaii, Easter Island, and New Zealand.

In the 16 th century, the Dutch successfully reached Asia through Cape of Good Hope, the same route founded by the Portuguese, and began their spice trade in the East Indies that consists of what is now Indonesia. They established the Dutch East India Company to oversee their lucrative business in Asia, and by the 1700, the enterprise grew to be the greatest commercial company in the world. Built for warfare and trade, and weighing from five hundred to a thousand tons, the Dutch vessels were colossal and overpowered the combined Spanish and Portuguese fleets. With their growing naval and economic power, the Dutch expanded politically and eventually imposed their power by taking over Malacca and almost the whole of Java. Inevitably, the Dutch monopoly and maritime expertise heavily influenced the seafaring Indonesians and their marine ships, evident in the Phinisi’s complex build, combining western charm and eastern techniques. With its archipelagic features, the Indonesian islands has truly been a coveted destination for trading and discovery that up until today attracts explorers who dream of revisiting history through the Phinisi.

The Bugis and Konjos: Seafaring Masters and Boatbuilders

People from Ara building Lamima

The “Vikings of Southeast Asia.” The Bugis people of South Sulawesi earned such title for being major traders and courageous sailors since the 16th century. These fearless wanderers have journeyed into Indonesia, then from Singapore to New Guinea, and from the southern Philippines to northwestern Australia. Some identify the Bugis as pirates who were known to have traded spices and incense through sailing on their masterfully built Phinisi ships. They became legendary warriors and exporters in the region through their voyages in the Straits of Malacca.

At present, the Bugis people reside in coastal and lush lowlands and work as rice farmers, fishermen or traders. Most of them converted from Animism to Islam but kept their customary traditions such as upholding the Siri concept that represents dignity, honor, or courtesy. These values continue to stand at the center of the Bugis people’s daily lives today.

Residing similarly in South Sulawesi, mostly at the Bulukumba Regency, are the Konjos—the skillful Phinisi boatbuilders who have been dedicating their life in perfecting their craft. The process begins with them searching for the appropriate wood and staff to build the ship’s hull, then completed with the construction of caulking, mast, rigging and sail making. In building a Phinisi, the Konjos use wooden nails in connecting the planks forming the hull, exemplifying mastery of technique and a unique custom. Boatbuilding has been so entrenched in the Konjo people’s lives as its art, culture, and rituals have been preserved and passed down from one generation to another. Being devoted craftsmen, Konjos were customarily not allowed to cruise at sea on a Phinisi as elders feared that their tribesmen would sail off and not return, creating the possibility of losing their honored traditions.

Konjo’s Wooden Nails

Lamima was built by the Konjos tribe in Bira, South Sulawesi in 2011. At that time, Bira was a small coastal village 10 km away from Ara which is the home of the traditional boat builders. Dominique (the owner of Lamima) found this place talking with other boat builders, he went to Bira himself and decided to start his project there, he made a great choice. As always, the Konjos started the project by doing a keel-laying ceremony and planning everything to launch the hull 9 months later. For the people of Ara, the master-builder is the mother of the boat and the hull needs to go in the water 9 months after the keel-laying ceremony.

Lamima’s Keellaying Ceremony

Apart from their significant role as boatbuilders, the Konjos are also recognized for their music, more particularly for the ganrang Konjo, a set of musical instruments that often accompanies their wedding ceremony called pabbuntingang. It is composed of drums, gongs and a wind instrument, and played to produce what music experts would describe as funky rhythms. The playing of the ganrang Konjo is often associated with those of noble birth or coming from the karaeng or puang class of their caste system, which is continually practiced at present.

Sailing at The Forefront of Ecotourism

Today, the sight of a Phinisi still evokes a prehistoric charm amid its evolution from a cargo ship into a luxury sailing yacht with some models featuring diving provisions. Seafaring travelers may indulge in a modern-day ocean expedition aboard a Phinisi, as it combines excellent Konjo workmanship with the comforts and safety of high-end yachts. Currently, skilled craftsmen who learned from their forefathers are continuing the Phinisi boatbuilding tradition even outside of South Sulawesi. The Konjo builders have spread out and have reached the shores of Kalimantan in Borneo, where high-quality timbers can be found for assembling ships up to 50 meters in length.

Undeniably, sailing on a Phinisi presents more than just the thrill of a voyage far and beyond, but  inevitably forms a connection between the traveler and Indonesia’s great boat makers and their ancestors. The Phinisi remains to represent Indonesia’s rich maritime heritage and its steadfast commitment towards the conservation of earlier practices with the artistic and ecological use of natural resources at its core. Present-day Phinisi builders continue to stay true to their forefathers’ original mechanism. This method brings Phinisi sailing at the forefront of sustainability, contributing to the growing conscious traveling movement.

Phinisi traditional boat building stands as a captivating testament to Indonesia’s rich maritime heritage. It is particularly rooted in the Indonesian boat building in Sulawesi. The term “Phinisi” originates from the Bugis-Makassar language and refers to a distinct style of sailing vessel characterized by its towering masts and intricate rigging. What sets Phinisi boat building apart is the meticulous craftsmanship that combines age-old techniques with a profound understanding of the seas. Traditionally constructed without the use of blueprints, Phinisi boats are born from the skillful hands of master shipwrights who pass down their knowledge through generations. On top of that, the vessels are typically built from locally sourced hardwoods, and the construction process involves an intimate connection with nature and the elements.

Testimonials

My wife and I are traveling with friends and are currently aboard the Celestia. I have a bit of time to myself today and would like to share some feedback with you. While I have spent time scuba diving on a live aboard before, this is our first time on a charter boat such as the Celestia.

Before I mention the highlight of our experience, which is the crew, I do want to mention some other things that are also important. The vessel herself is both an adventure and a home away from home. It is a joy to be on the Celestia! This morning my wife and I woke up early and went up to the upper deck to look at the stars. The large cushions by the bow are a favorite with the children in our group. The dining area on the main deck provides our entire group – 13 of us – with beautiful views for each meal. Even simple things such as taking a nap and playing games seem too good to be true aboard the Celestia.

Of course the food has been amazing! Every meal has brought all sorts of praises. The menu is new and exotic, as well as familiar and comforting. This is true not only of the meals, but of all the snacks and beverages throughout the day, including every time we return aboard the ship after an adventure. Hot chocolate after our night dives!

But as I mentioned, as wonderful as the vessel is, what is most impressive to us is the crew of the Celestia. We have a very active group! On most days we are scuba diving 3 times! We also hike a lot and do water sports. The crew, every one of them, is active in happily assisting us with whatever we do. It is apparent to all of us how hard they are working and the long hours that they put in each day. Our cruise director Jennifer has assisted my wife and I now for several weeks as we prepared for our trip. In addition to her many other duties she has accompanied us on each dive to educate us and help us have a great experience. She also oversees the entire team, and her leadership comes out in the exceptional services that they provide. Every deck hand, food server, engineer, the pilots, dive master, the kitchen staff, and the other staff members are skilled not only in what they do, but how they serve the guests. This is true in everything from the cleanliness of the Celestia, to the dives and everything that is required for each scuba event, meals, massages, and our daily activities. It is also true for the little things such as opening the doors for us, assisting us with our wetsuits, arranging the deck furniture for us and many other routine tasks. God is blessing us through this entire team and all that they are doing. For my wife and I we wish to extend our thanks not only to the crew, but to your entire organization that creates experiences like this. Thank you!

We have just enjoyed 9 days on Celestia in Raja Ampat, I can not recommend this yacht highly enough. We have been on other liveaboards and the crew on Celestia went above and beyond in their caring for us. Everyone from the deckhand to chef, the masseuse, the dive guides were amazing.

The yacht itself is perfection, generously sized cabins with the most beautiful decoration, the bathrooms are also gorgeous with the 3 main cabins even having Japanese style toilets!

The food was above and beyond with Chef Wayan from Home in Bali being the menu creator with 2 onboard chefs creating the most delicious multi course meals 3 times a day!

Seriously if you are thinking of chartering in Indonesia then look no further, you have found heaven on the high seas!

We couldn’t possibly ask for more! Jennifer and the entire crew has seared a magical core memory in all of us, from start to finish! We are so lucky to have chosen Celestia and this is the best trip we ever have in our lifetime up to date and likely nothing else could exceed this experience.

We are forever grateful for the dedication to details and genuine hospitality of the crew in making every single moment of this trip special.

Phinisi Yachts in Indonesia - UNESCO World Heritage

Written By: Sebastian Maier

The great age of sail, which ended in the west in the early twentieth century, never quite ended in Indonesia. Here, traditional wooden yachts, the phinisi schooners, still cruise the Indian Ocean like they did hundreds of years ago.

Phinisi Yachts Barefoot Yachts Indonesia 2 1200x800

However now they are equipped with modern safety equipment and high comfort standards, perfect for yacht charters in Indonesia .

The ancient art of Indonesian seafaring cemented its place as an intangible cultural heritage site with the humble phinisi schooner, and in south Sulawesi, the crafting of these yachts has been handed down for countless generations and now been declared an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO.

Sulawesi traditional boat building recognised as world cultural heritage

With just under 1,800 islands scattered large and small across the equator, Indonesia has long been revolutionising the art of seafaring and boat building. Within the last several centuries, as sea trade and ports became established and human and cultural connections were made, the sprawling Indonesian archipelago became known as a diverse cultural paradise, both on land and at sea. These seafarers not only played significant roles in the world’s spice trade of ancient times, but they knowingly developed, evolved and honed the craft of boat building.

Phinisi Senja 1200x800

If one visits Indonesia, it doesn’t take long to find evidence of a strong and resilient traditional maritime heritage spanning centuries, and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has noticed that. In December 2017, UNESCO formally recognized the  cultural significance of boat building  in Indonesia when a unanimous vote of the 12th session of its Unique Cultural Heritage Committee cemented the art of boatbuilding in south Sulawesi as a site not only worth preserving, but also worth world recognition.

Also known as the Sulawesi schooner, it was the latest addition to UNESCO’s list of unique Indonesian cultural establishments including the stunning textile, batik; the ancient form of storytelling, Wayang puppetry; the Saman dance of the Gayo people in Sumatra; and the asymmetrical Kris dagger, amongst select others.

Knowledge and skill were passed on through generations of craftsmen, who developed tight-knit communities around the Indonesian art of boat building. The phinisis they built featured a tall, powerful, topsail-ketch rig with unusual, permanently standing gaff booms, and they have traditionally been built on the beach, where fresh logs arrive from the forests of Kalimantan and Sulawesi.

Traditionally, the process of crafting a phinisi, from log to maiden voyage, involved several ceremonies and rituals, starting with the choosing of the right tree for the right element of the boat. The various ceremonies were critical to continuing and celebrating the building process, particularly the laying of the keel.

The phinisi as a craft

Historically, phinisis were traded and sailed in the 19 th and 20 th centuries by the mariners of south Sulawesi. Nicknamed The Vikings of Southeast Asia , the Bugis and Makassan people are largely responsible for the powerful rigs.

Phinisi Yachts Indonesia 1200x800

Then and now

In previous years, teakwood, a once plentiful tropical hardwood, may have been favoured because of its high oil content, tensile strength and tight grain. However, because teak is no longer plentiful and considered quite soft and inferior by boat builders, these days, ironwood and bankirai are the preferred tree species for boat building material.

Because of its durability and high strength, bankirai is not difficult to work with. Ironwood, locally called kayu ulin, is also one of the hardest and heaviest woods in Indonesia, and despite its weight, is a favored material because it is not susceptible to tropical termites and fungus.

As early as the 1970s, the addition of small engine morphed the sailing phinisi into a well-known vessel used commercially around Indonesia, for tourism and transportation. Unique, time-defying construction and continued rituals surrounding the existence of these revered vessels are part of what UNESCO looks for when nominating a cultural and traditional artifact for UNESCO Unique Cultural Heritage.

Cruising on a phinisi

Cruising on a phinisi is different from yacht charters anywhere else in the world. Not only does the Indonesian Archipelago offer a beauty and diversity that can not be found anywhere else in the world, but also the unique yachts used to explore these stunning islands are different from anywhere else.

Many phinisi yachts have been adapted for the comfort and and adventure of divers, snorkellers, groups of friends and small families who intend on making a memorable journey into the lesser known parts of Southeast Asia. With sundecks, open kitchens, beautiful saloons and open design floor plans, both adventure and luxury are fast becoming one of the most interesting ways to explore Indonesia in a unique way.

Exploring Indonesia on a phinisi yacht is like travelling back in time: a return to classical sailing, giving one a feeling of real adventure and discovery.

Unveiling the Magic of Wooden Ships: The Ultimate Guide to Phinisi Construction

  • June 4, 2024

Wooden ships hold a special place in maritime history, representing craftsmanship, tradition, and a connection to the sea that’s hard to replicate. In recent years, there’s been a resurgence of interest in wooden ships, particularly the majestic Indonesian Phinisi. If you’re captivated by wooden boats or considering a unique yacht project, understanding Phinisi construction is a journey worth taking.

A Legacy of Seafaring Excellence

Originating from South Sulawesi, Indonesia, the Phinisi is a two-masted sailing ship known for its graceful lines, impressive sails, and sturdy wooden hull. Originally used for trade and fishing, Phinisis have evolved into luxurious liveaboard yachts and charter vessels, sought after for their beauty and historical significance.

Key Features of Phinisi Ships

  • Distinctive Hull Design: The hull’s shape, often compared to a bird in flight, combines stability with speed, allowing Phinisis to navigate both open ocean and shallow waters.
  • Elegant Sails: The large gaff-rigged sails, often made of canvas or synthetic materials, harness the wind’s power with a timeless grace.
  • Intricate Woodwork: The craftsmanship displayed in the interior and exterior woodwork is a hallmark of Phinisi construction, showcasing intricate carvings and attention to detail.

The Art of Phinisi Construction

Building a Phinisi is a meticulous process that blends centuries-old techniques with modern shipbuilding practices. Master craftsmen, often from generations of shipbuilders, guide each stage of construction.

  • Selecting the Wood: Choosing the right type of wood is crucial. Teak, ironwood, and other hardwoods known for their durability and resistance to saltwater are preferred.
  • Crafting the Hull: The hull is the backbone of the ship. Planks are carefully cut, shaped, and joined using traditional methods like mortise and tenon joints, ensuring a strong and watertight structure.
  • Raising the Masts and Rigging: The masts, often made of ironwood, are raised and secured. The rigging, a complex network of ropes and pulleys, is meticulously installed to control the sails.
  • Interior Fit-Out: The interior is transformed into luxurious living spaces, cabins, and common areas. The finest woods, fabrics, and finishes are used to create an ambiance of comfort and elegance.
