Scania introduces g38 to team up with its 770 v8.
SĂDERTĂLJE, Sweden , Aug. 21, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- At the Elmia fair in Sweden , Scania is introducing its latest iteration of the G-series gearboxes for Scania Opticruise. The robust newcomer â named G38 â is specially developed for working together with Scania's most powerful V8, the 3,700 Nm, 16 litre 770 hp top-of-the-line legend. Together they offer everything from fuel and weight savings to a smooth ride and great startability.
G38 is explicitly developed for working in pair with Scania's 770 hp V8
Able to handle 3,800 Nm - without added weight or dimensions
Fuel savings from reduced friction, wider range and the opporÂtunity to select faster rear axle gearings while maintaining good startability
G38 is the latest and final iteration of the G-series gearboxes that was first introduced in 2019 (with the G33). It is tailor-made for handling the massive torque that Scania's 770 hp V8 is producing. Despite being able to handle up to 3,800 Nm of torque, it features exactly the same dimensions and weight as the G33. So, how is it made?
"It is basically about metallurgy, choosing more extreme steel qualities and applying technologies such as cog polishing and shot peening for increasing the hardening and the durability of certain vital components" says Mats Henriksson, Development Engineer at Scania R&D. "We have also added extra oil channels for the most crucial parts, but that is all - the basic design of the G-series is very sturdy in itself".
The G-series gearboxes are typically 60-70 kg lighter than the gearboxes they are replacing, mainly due to the all-alluminium housings and smaller overall dimensions . Another key achievement is lowered noise, a prerequisite for meeting future regulations. The gearshifts on these automated manual gearboxes are made by pneumatic actuators. By using shaft brakes, Scania's engineers have been able to reduce the number of synchronisations, space that is used for wider cogs instead.
"The G-series and its features was something of a revolution at the time of the introduction , and it still is if you ask me", says Bo Eriksson , Product Manager, Scania Trucks. "It offers all the customers values you can ask for while at the same time being flexible and fit for a broad palette of applications and operations of the kind where a lot of horsepower and torque are involved. Heavy-haulage tractors for instance will definitely benefit from the G38. It is the ultimate addition when it comes to well-balanced performance steps in the Scania modular system".
The G-series gearboxes can also be ordered as HD versions (Heavy Duty) and the G38 is no exception. As a G38CH, it will come with a wider planetary gear wheel for adding even more robustness. It increases the ability to handle high torque on the prop shaft also under the most demanding road conditions (typically where there are no "roads").
The G38 gearbox is shorter than the most common Scania gearbox for the same type of operation at present, GRSO926. A certain difference between them is that the G38 has only one built-in torque limitation: as little as 100 Nm of engine power is cut off at a certain gear & rpm point, something that the driver will hardly notice. The G38 offers 14 forward gears, including a super crawler and a direct gear, and the opportunity to specify up to 8 gears for going in reverse.

Scania has announced that a new Viking 48 convertible will be powered by twin Scania 1,150 hp DI16 engines. The vessel, Mack Attack , was commissioned by Mack Boring and Parts Co. to demonstrate the reliability and performance of Scaniaâs most powerful pleasure craft-certified V-8 engines.
âWe are thrilled to have the opportunity to feature our 16-liter, 1,150 hp Scania engines in another Viking demo platform,â said Patrick McGovern, president of Mack Boring and Parts. âOur previous vessel, Mack 900 , exceeded our expectations in performance when we introduced the Scania 900 hp engine to the market in 2021. We see this new project as the natural next step for the introduction of the more powerful Scania V-8.â
Built on a compacted graphite iron engine block and employing a simple waste gate turbocharger, the Scania DI16 engine delivers top-of-class performance without the need for additional turbos or superchargers. The resulting lighter weight, combined with Scaniaâs proprietary Engine Management System and common rail extra Âhigh-pressure injection system, optimizes fuel delivery for impressive torque, lower noise and exceptional fuel efficiency.

LONDON:Â The British-flagged luxury yacht The Bayesian capsized early on Monday (Aug 19) off the coast of southern Sicily with 22 people aboard.
Here's what is known about the 12 passengers and 10 crew members, believed to have hailed from Canada, France, Ireland, Myanmar, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, the United Kingdom and the United States.
THE MISSING
British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch are among those unaccounted for, according to Italy's Civil Protection Agency.
Lynch, once dubbed the British "Bill Gates", founded software firm Autonomy in the 1990s but its US$11 billion sale to Hewlett-Packard in 2011 saw him face fraud charges in the US.
A jury in San Francisco acquitted the 59-year-old and a co-defendant of all charges in June.
It is understood he organised the yacht trip as a post-trial celebration for family, as well as some of his lawyers and employees.
His missing daughter was set to study English at Oxford University after finishing school this year, The Times reported.
Jonathan Bloomer, the 70-year-old British chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife Judy, a charity trustee, are also among those missing , UK insurer Hiscox said on Tuesday.
American lawyer Chris Morvillo - a partner at the high-profile Clifford Chance law firm, who worked on Lynch's recent US fraud trial - is also missing along with his wife Neda.
Confirming the pair were not accounted for in a statement on Tuesday, a Clifford Chance spokesperson said: "We are in shock and deeply saddened by this tragic incident."
ONE BODY FOUND
The body of one man was found in the sea a few hours after the disaster unfolded off Porticello, east of Palermo.
Officials have said he was the yacht's chef, with different media outlets naming him as either Ricardo or Recaldo Thomas.
He is reportedly Canadian-born and had been living in Antigua.
THE SURVIVORS
Lynch's 57-year-old wife, Angela Bacares, who is also Hannah's mother, was among the survivors, officials have confirmed.
She was seen in a wheelchair after suffering abrasions on her feet, according to the Italian newspaper La Repubblica.
The paper reported she had been taken to a regional hospital, where she told doctors the boat began to tilt at around 4am local time, waking Bacares and her husband.
She had then climbed up to the deck to assess the situation when the vessel suddenly started to capsize, the paper said.
Briton Charlotte Golunski, 35 - a partner at Lynch's investment firm Invoke Capital who previously worked at Autonomy - her partner James Emslie and her one-year-old daughter also survived.
Golunski told La Repubblica they made it out alive because they were on deck when the yacht sank, describing in dramatic detail holding her baby above the surface of the sea to save her.
She said a lifeboat then inflated and 11 people eventually climbed in, with all three family members unharmed.
Ayla Ronald, 36, a London-based lawyer for Clifford Chance originally from New Zealand who also worked on Lynch's fraud case, "thankfully survived the incident", the law firm confirmed.
It noted her partner, believed to be named Matthew Fletcher, also made it out alive.
Her father Lin Ronald told various media outlets that she had texted him that they were "very shocked at the moment".
Other media reports have said another New Zealander, James Caulfield, 51, survived.
Meanwhile, Irish citizen Sasha Murray, 29, injured her right foot in the tragedy, according to the Irish Times.
Frenchman Matthew Griffith, 22, is also said to have survived.
The boat's crew are believed to include Sri Lankans as well as a citizen of Myanmar named as 39-year-old Myin Htun Kyaw, according to reports.

Divers search Sicily yacht wreck with UK tech boss among missing
UK tycoonâs body found in sunken yacht, one woman still missing
Truce hopes fade as Gaza rocked by Israeli bombardment, battles

Divers and an underwater drone searched Tuesday for six people, including a British tech tycoon and international banker, believed trapped when a luxury yacht sank off Sicily.
The 56-metre (185 feet) yacht "Bayesian" was anchored with 10 crew and 12 passengers on board when it was struck by a waterspout mini-tornado, before dawn on Monday.
Fifteen people, including a woman and her one-year-old baby, were rescued. The body of one man -- reported to be the yacht's chef -- was found.
Among the six missing were UK tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, and Jonathan Bloomer, the chair of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife Judy.
The passengers were guests of Lynch -- sometimes referred to as Britain's Bill Gates -- to celebrate his acquittal in a massive US fraud case.
While Italy's coastguard said the search continued without a break, Captain Vincenzo Zagarola said it was "difficult to imagine" it would end well.
Experts and officials have described the sinking as an "extroardinary" event.
The search was made difficult by the British-flagged yacht lying largely intact on the seabed some 50 metres down.
Divers take one minute to get down and another minute to get back. They are restricted to 12 minutes for each dive because of the water pressure, according to fire service spokesman Luca Cari.
Lynch's wife Angela Bacares was among those rescued, according to Salvo Cocina, head of Sicily's Civil Protection Agency.
As well as Bloomer, who testified for Lynch in the US case, the missing included Lynch's lawyer Christopher Morvillo, and his wife Neda, according to law firm Clifford Chance.
Lynch, 59, was acquitted on all charges in a San Francisco court in June after he was accused of an $11 billion fraud linked to the sale of his software firm Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard.
It emerged Tuesday that a co-defendant, former Autonomy executive Stephen Chamberlain, died after being hit by a car on Saturday in England.
- 'Tight spaces' -
Divers trained to work in tight spaces were flown in from Rome and Sardinia late Monday.
A first, nighttime search of the wreck failed, with firefighters saying early Tuesday that furniture was blocking their way.
Marco Tilotta, from the Palermo fire service divers' unit, told AFP search efforts were concentrated on getting inside the sleeping and living areas of the yacht.
"The spaces inside the boat are very tight and if you encounter an obstacle it is very complicated to move forward, just as it is very difficult to find alternative routes," said Cari, from the fire service.
The vessel was moored off Porticello, east of Palermo, when violent winds and rains suddenly swept up the coast.
"It was terrible. The boat was hit by really strong wind, and shortly after it went down," survivor Charlotte Golunski told ANSA news agency.
Golunski, board director at Luminance, a company founded by Lynch, lost hold of her one-year-old daughter in the waves "for two seconds", before grabbing her again.
"Lots of people were screaming" in the dark, said Golunski, who scrambled onto a life raft.
- Mast 'snapped' -
Reportedly owned by Lynch's family, "Bayesian" was built by Italian shipbuilding firm Perini Navi in 2008. Its 75-metre mast was the world's tallest aluminium sailing mast, according to the Charter World website.
A photograph posted on social media by the Baia Santa Nicolicchia bar in Porticello showed the yacht lit up, its towering mast shining in the darkness, just a few hours before the storm hit.
A waterspout is a column that descends from a cloud to form a rotating mixture of wind and water, often during severe thunderstorms.
Matthew Schanck, from the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told AFP it was an "extraordinary event".
"This is a large, luxurious superyacht that has founded quite quickly in a touristy, well-known sailing area off Sicily. It's pretty unprecedented."
Karsten Borner, captain of a yacht anchored nearby at the time of the storm, said there was a "very strong hurricane gust" and he battled to keep his vessel steady.
Borner saw the yacht's mast "bend and then snap", according to Italy's Corriere della Sera daily.
Italian authorities have opened a probe, while the UK's marine accident investigation branch sent four inspectors to Palermo.

All you need to know about the British luxury yacht âBayesianâ tragedy off Sicily
Divers are currently examining the wreck of the yacht, which lies at a depth of 49 meters..
One person died and six are still missing after a luxury yacht sank off the Italian coast on Monday (August 19), after being struck by a violent storm, the country's coast guard said. The incident took place in Sicily's Palermo.
Here's all you need to know about the tragedy :
What happened: The yacht, named Bayesian, departed from the Sicilian port of Milazzo on August 14. It was last tracked east of Palermo on Sunday (August 18) evening, listed as "at anchor" on vessel tracking app Vesselfinder. A coast guard official noted that while bad weather was anticipated, the storm's intensity was unexpected. Recent storms and heavy rainfall have affected Italy, causing significant damage from floods and landslides following a period of intense heat.
Eyewitness account: The captain of a nearby boat told Reuters that when the storm hit he turned the engine on to keep control of the vessel and avoid a collision with the Bayesian. "We managed to keep the ship in position and after the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone," Karsten Borner told journalists. The other boat "went flat on the water, and then down," he added. He said that his crew then found some of the survivors on a life raft - including three who were seriously injured and "a little baby and the wife of the owner" - and took them on board before the coast guard picked them up.
Missing individuals: The six missing persons include nationals from Britain, the US, and Canada. Among those missing is British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, who was recently acquitted of fraud charges in San Francisco related to the $11 billion sale of his software company, Autonomy, to Hewlett-Packard.
Rescue and medical status: Out of the 15 people rescued, eight were taken to local hospitals and are reported to be in stable condition.
Investigation and inspection: Divers are currently examining the wreck of the Bayesian, which lies at a depth of 49 meters. Prosecutors in Termini Imerese have launched an investigation into the circumstances leading to the sinking.
UK response: A UK foreign ministry spokesperson said British officials were in contact with local authorities over the incident and were ready to provide consular support for Britons who were affected.
About the yacht: The 56-metre-long (184-ft) sailboat was identified as the British-registered Bayesian and sank with 22 people on board shortly before sunrise, the coast guard said in a statement. The Bayesian was built by Italian shipbuilder Perini in 2008 and was last refitted in 2020, and was managed by yachting company Camper & Nicholsons. It won a string of awards for its design and can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites and a crew of 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. Formerly known as Salute, or health in Italian, its 75-metre mast is the tallest aluminum mast in the world, Perini said on its website.

Why Punjabâs Dalits are a divided house over SC sub-categorisation verdict
The Supreme Court's verdict allowing the sub-categorization of Scheduled Castes and Tribes has divided Dalit groups in Punjab, with the strike against the judgment receiving a partial response. The state's two main clusters of Dalits, the Ramdasias and Mazhabi Sikhs, have different opinions on the issue. While the former supports the sub-categorization, the latter fears it may affect Dalit unity.

Bayesian superyacht maker says his boats are âUNSINKABLEâ & slams crew for making key âmistakesâ before it sank in mins

THE boss of the firm that built the Bayesian superyacht has said it is "unsinkable" after it plunged to the bottom of the ocean on Monday killing at least six people.
Giovanni Costantino has slammed the crew onboard the vessel for making key "mistakes" before it sunk in just minutes.
Mr Costantino, who is CEO at The Italian Sea Group, accused the crew of making âmistakesâ and failing to âclose the doors and hatchesâ of the superyacht.
He said boats built by his firms are "safest in the most absolute sense".
Mr Costantino told The Sun: "Modern sailing ships, especially high-tech ones like the Perini, are designed to be extremely safe and stable.
âEven in very critical conditions, if procedures are followed, a sailing yacht like the Bayesian will return to an upright position.

"However, if the ship takes on water, this stability is compromised.
âWhere the water entered will be determined by the investigators.
"What is certain is that the ship took on hundreds of thousands of litres of water."
Mr Constantino disputed claims the tornado had not been forecast and came as a shock and said it was "widely predicted".

He emphasised that local fisherman didn't venture out due to the weather conditions and that it was expected that the ship would need to take safety precautions.
Mr Constantino also insisted guests should not have been in their cabins during the storm, adding: âIn an emergency situation, guests should have been in the common areas rather than in their cabins, as cabins become dangerous when the ship tilts.
"It is impossible to exit the cabins when the ship is tilted."
Mr Constantino also disputed widely reported claims that the ship sank in just 60 seconds - instead saying logs show it took 16 minutes to go down.
He told The Sun: âThe ship was anchored, and at one point it seems the anchor failed, causing it to drift 400 metres in four minutes.
"By this point, the ship had already taken on water, so yes, it took six minutes to sink. Letâs say 16 minutes to sink completely.
âFrom the papers everything started at 3.54am and ended at 4.10am.â
The Italian Sea Group CEO slammed the crew for making âmistakesâ and failing to âclose the doors and hatchesâ.
He added: âThe crew did not handle the adverse weather conditions properly and did not follow the correct procedures to ensure safety.
It comes as unearthed video of a similar boat tipping on its side in a storm shows exactly how a vessel like the Bayesian can withstand extreme weather.
Mr Constantino continued: âThe hull and deck should have been sealed by closing all doors and hatches.
âAfter placing the guests in the shipâs designated emergency assembly area, the engines should have been started, and the anchor should have been lifted or automatically released.
It comes as...

âThe bow should have been pointed into the wind, and the keel should have been lowered."
Mr Constantino said he has made himself available to speak with the public prosecutor and investigators.
Footage shows a similarly sized yacht, also with a long mast, tilting on its side during stormy weather in Auckland, New Zealand.
This boat however appears to right itself, moving back towards a sitting position as it counterbalances.
Questions have been raised about why the keel - a fin-like backbone underneath the boat which helps keep it balanced - was raised on the Bayesian.
Usually only lifted as a vessel steers into harbour, the keel can stop a boat from capsizing during storms when down.
Five bodies belonging to the six missing passengers have been recovered so far, with the yacht chef also found dead on Monday, as divers search today for the final person.
The Italian Sea Group owns the firm that built the Bayesian, Perini Navi, with Mr Costantino saying: "Being the manufacturer of Perini [boats], I know very well how the boats have always been designed and built.
"And as Perini is a sailing ship... sailing ships are renowned to be the safest ever."
He said the boats' structure and keel make them "unsinkable bodies".
Mr Costantino said news of the sinking "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other".
"This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact," he added.
He suggested the boat had been taking on water and "all it took was another guest" to turn her over.
"She then straightened very briefly before going down," he told Italian TV.
Divers set out from Porticello Harbour this morning for day four of the rescue efforts to recover the fifth and six passengers.
Pictures showed them taking the fifth body inland at around 8.45am local time after they were located on the wreck last night.
It was later confirmed to be Brit tycoon Mike Lynch, with the remaining four named as Jonathan and Judy Bloomer and Chris and Neda Morvillo, according to reports on the ground.
The final missing body awaiting to be recovered is thought to be Mr Lynch's teenage daughter Hannah.
Initial reports claimed the first two bodies found on Wednesday were that of Mike and Hannah, Sicilyâs civil protection chief Salvo Cocina told The Telegraph .
They were found trapped behind a mattress inside one of the cabins in the hull, local media reported.
But Italian outlet Giornale Di Sicilia  reported that the four bodies recovered were the two married couples.
The coast guard appeared to confirm these reports today, according to Sky and Reuters.
Italian authorities have yet to publicly confirm the identities of any of the bodies.
Rescuers spent days scouring the almost perfectly intact sunken boat , lying some 160ft underwater on the seabed, with little success.
Because of floating debris, narrow entrances and a 10-minute time limit per dive, rescuers struggled to reach the cabins where they believed the six people were trapped.
Officials held out hope there was a chance for rescue if those trapped in the yacht were surviving inside air pockets.
After sending down an underwater drone on Wednesday and using a hydraulic jack to prize open sliding glass doors in the lounge - they finally reached the suites.
Who is Mike Lynch?
FORMER billionaire entrepreneur Mike Lynch was reportedly confirmed dead on Thursday morning after a ÂŁ14m luxury yacht capsized in a tornado off the coast of Sicily on Monday morning.
He is thought to be among the five bodies recovered from the sunken boat alongside Morgan Stanley chief Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy, lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda.
The tech tycoon, dubbed "Britain's Bill Gates", was one of the 22 people sailing onboard the ÂŁ166,000 a week vessel.
Lynch, 59, was a serial entrepreneur having founded and sold tech and software companies with one of his biggest being Autonomy Corporation.
He was also been involved in Invoke Capital and cybersecurity company Darktrace.
As well as being awarded an OBE for his services to enterprise in 2006.
Born in Ilford, Lynch had a firefighter father from County Cork and a nurse mother from County Tipperary.
Away from work, Mike was happily married to wife Angela Bacares and the pair had two children together.
Angela is among those who have been rescued on the superyacht.
In 2023, the Sunday Times rich list set the couple's value at ÂŁ852m.
But Mike was extradited to the US on fraud charges back in 2023 with a judge setting his bail at ÂŁ79m.
Just weeks ago, Lynch was acquitted of criminal charges by a jury in San Francisco after a 12-year legal battle over the $11bn sale of his firm, Autonomy, to Hewlett-Packard in 2011.
The doomed yacht, named Bayesian, is also said to be owned by the Lynch family.
The ultra-luxurious yacht plunged beneath waves in the early hours of Monday after being hammered by a rare "Black Swan" waterspout  - a freak twister-like event.
Witnesses said the 246ft tall mast was hit by a tornado, toppling the boat and causing it to capsize before it sank to the seabed in just minutes.
Fifteen of the 22 people onboard were rescued when a smaller nearby boat saw them in distress, helping 11 people clinging to a life raft onboard.
Lynch's wife -Â Angela Bacares, 57 Â - was one of those who managed to escape in the tiny inflatable raft as the vessel capsized.
Italian officials have launched an investigation, as have the UK's Marine Accident Investigation Branch, into how the superyacht sank.
Four Brit specialists have been deployed to the site in Palermo to investigate.

Maritime experts agreed the yacht may have been sunk by a freak "Black Swan" waterspout which would have appeared without warning.
Captain of the doomed yacht James Cutfield, 51, was grilled by cops  for over two hours after divers discovered the boat's keel was raised - a structural backbone of the boat which could have affected its stability during the storm.

Scania’s 900 hp Diesels Hit Stride
- By Patrick Sciacca
- December 1, 2021
I looked at the GPS on the Viking Yachtsâ 46 Billfish Mack 900 . The speed showed 41.5 knots as twin 900 hp Scania diesels spun at their rated 2,300 rpm. According to the Scania staff on board, the boat ran like this from day one. These motors represent the first step in the Swedish companyâs commitment to the US pleasure-craft sector.
Scania is a household name in Europe, known for building all things on- and off-highway, including buses, trucks and diesel engines. Its marine diesels are most noted for their use in commercial applications, ranging from patrol boats to lobster boats to passenger ferries.
During the pandemic, the company, working with its US distributor Mack Boring, decided it was time to show American yachtsmen what its diesels could do.
To that end, the 46 Billfish I got aboard made an easy cruise speed of 31 knots at just 1,750 rpm and 70 percent engine load with 12 people aboard. This is equivalent to a light jog for the inline six-cylinder engines. Fuel burn was 48 gph. Considering a 10 percent reserve on the vesselâs 709-gallon fuel capacity, Mack 900âs range is 412 nautical miles at this cruise speed. Pick it up to 2,000 rpm, and the speed jumps to 36 knots with a 68 gph burn and 337 nm range. At 41.5 knots, fuel burn is 89 gph and range is 297 nm.
On servicing US clients, Mack Boring has an ever-growing support network. Customers call an 800 number, and within 15 minutes, the issue is assigned and the customer is contacted. The parts are located and a technician is appointed. The company is graded on its response times.
The Mack 900 with the new Scania engines will be on display at boat shows up and down the East Coast this fall.ââ
The Middleweight: Scania 900 HP DieselÂ
The 900 hp Scania DI13 diesel is an inline, six-cylinder common-rail engine aimed at midsize pleasure-craft applications. The motor is built on a lightweight compacted-graphite-iron engine block. It comes in at 2,832 pounds, sans coolant and oil. The companyâs marine-engine range currently runs from 700 to 1,100 horsepower, which also includes a 16-liter diesel model. Scaniaâs diesel range is also Tier III-compliant.

Scania drops a pair of 900-hp diesels in a Viking 46 Billfish as its first foray into recreational boating. Jeff Moser. Oct 19, 2021. Power & Technology: Scania Enters the Recreational Boating Market. Known stateside for powering commercial craft and trawlers, Scania enters the recreational market with a bang via a collaboration with Viking Yachts.
Not only was the top end impressive, the cruising efficiency of the Scania engines was not to be denied. At 32.5 knots, the total fuel burn was a modest 56 gallons per hour with full fuel and water tanks, gear and a load of people. The engines were not as loud as expected and at trolling speeds they were downright mellow.
