Review of Spider 22

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat equipped with a fractional rig. A fractional rig has smaller headsails which make tacking easier, which is an advantage for cruisers and racers, of course. The downside is that having the wind from behind often requires a genaker or a spinnaker for optimal speed.

DaggerBoard

The Spider 22 is equipped with a daggerboard keel. A daggerboard is a lifting keel that can be lowered and raised, allowing the boat to enter shallow waters as well.

The boat can sail close to the beach as the draft is just 0.10 - 0.20 meter (0.33 - 0.63 ft) dependent of the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Spider 22 is 2.86, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.1 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Spider 22 is about 103 kg/cm, alternatively 581 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 103 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 581 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 35.77

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 17m 2 (182 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

Jib sheet 6.8 m(22.3 feet)10 mm(3/8 inch)
Genoa sheet6.8 m(22.3 feet)10 mm(3/8 inch)

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Spider 22 Rig Setup

Re: Spider 22 Rig Setup

Leo Reid wrote: Hi all This is my first post here although I have read many others in my search for my first trailerable. I have at last found my first boat after sailing on other peoples keel boats for many years. I have just bought a Spider 22 and have a question about the rig set up. On the bow there is a two pulley system which I assume is the connection point for the forestay and headsail. The pulleys appear to be suitable for one wire rope although there are two wire strops through them. Both strops have an eyelet crimped on to the end. One of the strops has a block attached to the end but I cant see how it works the way it is attached - it may just have been attached there for some reason without a specific purpose ?!?!? The pulley may be for an assymetrical kite foot but given it didnt come with a kite this answer may be a long shot. I assume that one or both of these strops are then fed back to a winch to tension the forestay but it is not clear how and where to. I have attached a couple of photos and would appreciate any advice I can get on this. One other question - are there many other Spider 22's sailing in Victoria and do they race from a particular club or venue ?? I am keen to do a bit of fun/club racing and cruising so would be interested if any clubs race Spiders. I assume most clubs would race with the CBH handicap system so even if there are not any Spiders racing I could race on the handicap system. Thanks for any advice I can get. Leo

How to Get Rid of Spiders on Boats

Published on November 8, 2014 ; last updated on January 24, 2023 by Carolyn Shearlock

In some areas, spiders just love boats. How do you get rid of them? Here's a way one reader learned by accident.

I’ve been asked more than once if I know how to get rid of spiders on a boat. And I didn’t . . . but trust a TBG reader to share a great tip when they learn it!

I just got this in an email from Christian, a boater from Oregon. Since I don’t have any spiders here in southern Florida, I haven’t tested his method. But I’m guessing it would work.

In his own words:

Just by accident I discovered a trick that I think is quite useful.

Here in the northwest we have a large amount of spiders that find their way into the cabin spaces of our boats. When gone for a few days or many times in the dark of the night they build their webs that I always seem to find with my face.

Yesterday coming back to the boat I found nearly a dozen new webs but all of them unoccupied with the spiders hiding in the cracks and crevices. I had left the boat closed up and as I was expecting company later lit a stick of incense.

Much to my amazement as the smoke drifted up a hiding spider rapidly dropped to the cabin sole.   Armed with the stick of incense, I let the smoke go around all of the other web areas where smoked out of hiding I was able to capture all but one spider.

I am going to be a hero at the next dock meeting….

Yep, I think he will be. How to get rid of spiders is a pretty big deal. I HATE spider bites!

Was it any special type of incense? I’m wondering if that’s why people use sage smoke to “purify” a space? Great tip, thank you.

November 8, 2014 at 8:50 am

We put chestnuts on the floor in our basement and they keep the spiders away…might work on a boat. We put them near the door Sue

She “captured” the spiders? Not on my boat 🙂 a good spider is a dead one, even then, far fro me 🙂

I get a spray bottle, fill it with vinegar & spray in all corners & places where spiders hang out. GONE, spiders hate vinegar & will leave. I have no spiders in my home or boat.

September 13, 2018 at 4:42 pm

What kind of vinegar?

Carolyn Shearlock says

September 14, 2018 at 7:54 am

Since he didn’t say, I’d guess plain white vinegar will work. I buy it by the gallon for so much stuff on the boat.

Illana Vickers says

I had heard that Horse Chestnuts (Aesculus hippocastanum) also keep spiders at bay. I thought it was an old wives tale but thought that I had nothing to loose but trying it, as I hate spiders (a good spider is a dead one 🙂 I was pleasently surprised to realise that they work like a charm 🙂 I placed them all aound our bed and after being away from the boat for a couple of months, there was not a single spider web insight 🙂 The Horse Chestnuts give off an odour that spiders dislike and keep them away.

Charles A Peavey says

November 8, 2014 at 4:40 pm

I’d be curious if it was the actual smoke and any smoke would do or ws it smoke from a specific scent of incense. One trick that I use which I learned from a local woman of knowledge of an Indian tribe is to use pepper tree leaves ion and around my boat, it has a nice smell and spiders and bugs avoid it completely. I change the pepper leaves annually.

The Boat Galley says

November 8, 2014 at 4:44 pm

Interesting. I might try that too. Where do you get the leaves?

November 8, 2014 at 5:50 pm

November 8, 2014 at 4:50 pm

Pepper trees are plentiful in our area in Northern California and I just pick them. The pepper is different than the normal black pepper found on the store shelves: it is much more pungent. I actually use the peppercorns for spicing it gives dishes a different flavor signature.

Gerald Hemming says

November 9, 2014 at 3:51 am

Spiders are carnivores and they eat other bugs. If you have spiders on your boat they are hunting the bugs that eat your boat. More to the point YOU HAVE BUGS, on your boat.

Tony Gariepy says

November 10, 2014 at 7:23 am

I have to agree with Gerald, there are usually no spiders where there is no food for them, i.e. other bugs…

Tom Geren says

November 13, 2014 at 8:17 am

What kind of bugs? I’ve seen nothing but largish DEAD roaches; far too big to get entangled. I’m not a fan of killing harmless spiders. I’ll try the incense.

Chris In Oregon says

November 13, 2014 at 10:23 am

Spiders build webs where THEY THINK they will have the best chance of sucess in catching Flying bugs. Black nats, no see-ums, common house flies, and mosquitoes all show up in our boats uninvited and often from smells our bodies put off. These bugs often follow two paths, they head to the light as in port holes, hatches and lamps or they follow a air current that has a smell in it. Spiders know this and build webs along the way to light or in the path of a air current. Having spiders in your boat does not guarantee that there are other bugs in your boat besides the spiders.

November 13, 2014 at 1:12 pm

Thanks, I’d much rather have the spiders than the noseeums, mossies, etc.

Robert Sayles says

September 2, 2018 at 1:22 pm

This is true. I spray full strength vinagar once a month & they are GONE.

Cat flea collars will drive them off and keep them away for months at a time, even small bits of them. We wrap them around rail and stanchion bases and pad eyes, and stuff the the bits you cut off there inside the dodger and bimini sleeves, speakers and turnbuckle covers, – anywhere we see a web. We buy them less expensively in bulk on the web, and using the ends maximizes their value. Like any pesticide, you need to evaluate any risks for yourself; since we don’t handle them after putting them out, I’m comfortable using them, at least above deck.

Janice R says

November 20, 2014 at 10:07 pm

Spiders do not like peppermint oil. Mix some with water in a spray bottle and spray around doors and hatches or anywhere you find them. Peppermint oil also keeps away rodents and other bugs. I had mice chewing the wiring and insulation out of my car. I started applying peppermint oil to a cotton pad and putting it under the hood and the problem stopped. When I actively used the peppermint oil in the house, I did not find spiders. But when I slacked off, they came back. Peppermint oil is common and found in stores, though I ordered mine from Amazon. One word of caution, wear gloves to protect your skin as the oil is very strong!

Watch out for peppermint oil if you have pets. It can eventually kill a cat. Something with their lungs can’t handle the odor. Nice to hear about flea collars. I think the dollar store has them. !!!

Peppermint oil works for us. We get tiny spiders here in southwest Florida. As soon as I see them I put peppermint oil on a makeup remover pad and wipe around doors and hatches…no more spiders!

Ortho Home Defense. You can get it at most big box stores and hardware stores. It comes in a gallon bottle with a sprayer and hose. You spray this on everything: rigging sail covers, lifelines and any areas inside that spiders line to build their webs. It has a long ( almost 4 months!) residual affect and we went from having to sweep spider webs away every time we went to the boat to not having seen a spider in months. It’s made for inside home usage so it’s safe ( as a chemical can be ) this was the first year we used it and it was only a partial season so I’m looking to see how long it’s residual is next season.

Incidentally, incense sticks are also good to keep flies away, as long as you can stand the sickly smell of the perfume! For fruit flies we leave little dishes of cloves out.

Essential oil Tea Tree oil – cut with alcohol. Put in Dollar Store plastic spray bottle. Arachnids can’t stand the smell or buy a 12v diffuser on Amazon. No more spiders!

March 2, 2017 at 12:43 pm

Buy a Solo 417 Sprayer and use my product the Eliminator found at www,boatdockspray.com. The article up top about Ortho Home Defense sounds like a registered pesticide and is not legal to use above water so do not get caught using on your dock.

September 16, 2018 at 2:17 pm

Do you just apply the eliminator to the dock around the boat? Keep webs and spiders from boat?

July 25, 2018 at 8:06 pm

I sprayed grain alcohol with tea tree and lavender oil at spider nest openings and it had no effect. I vacuum individual spiders and egg sacs to reduce population and seal the vacuum hose with an old t-shirt as my first defense. Deep cleaning is #2 and burning incense daily seems like it may be helping.

January 8, 2019 at 8:15 am

Peppermint oil is what we use. I have a hard time with strong scents so the incense won’t work for us. I use a small pad with peppermint oil and wipe all hatches and the door.

January 8, 2019 at 5:09 pm

For incense, I love nag champur, not sickly but masks diesel well (very well). As for spiders – spiders eat flying bitey things. Flying bitey things eat me for fun, spiders only tend to bite if I accidently lie on them. I don’t love spiders on the boat but if they stay in their area, I’ll stay in mine. They’re beautiful, intelligent creatures that eat baddies – welcome(ish) on my boat.

The vinegar and peppermint oil solution/spray seems like a good idea, but I’m curious if it would stain our white gelcoat and/or the brightwork around the hatch that I would likely use it on? I am also going to start using incense as a preventive.

Here in upstate NY, spiders are a bid problem when the boat sits in the hoist all season. I have tried the commercial “Spider Away” preparations with little success Last thing I do before launch in the spring is to use Ortho Home defense. Spray on a rag (wear gloves) and wipe down railings, stanchions, corners, etc where they make their webs. Spiders do not like lemon, so I wipe the vinyl upholstery and surfaces with Lemon Pledge. . So far, so good!

Many years ago I read somewhere that an ozone generator will kill all the bugs and also mold and mildew. I bought one right away. I don’t have any webs or bugs. There is a caution here. Ozone does its magic by removing the oxygen from the air which kills everything so you can turn it up when you leave the boat to kill the above problems but you will need to turn it off and open the doors and windows when you come back. You can use it when you are on the boat but it needs to be turned way down and off if you are sleeping. The other plus is makes the boat smell fresh and clean like a thunder storm just went through. I have been using one on my boats for years with no problems. when someone comes on my boat they always comment on how fresh it smells.

Re: how to control spiders (on) your boat ??? All of that spider poop comes from the spiders eating bugs. If there were no bugs there would be no spider poop and probably very few spiders. Spiders are much like barn cats they are there because that is where the food is to be found.

Re: how to control spiders (on) your boat ??? I was just tied up in Chestertown (MD) for 2 nights. Back in the home slip, I saw two varieties of large spiders like I've never seen, and a cricket. Maybe I should have tied up centered in the slip, rather than beam-to.

Re: how to control spiders (on) your boat ??? Several times in the morning or late afternoon sun I have seen the gossamer of spider silk forming curtains on all of the standing rigging where the baby spiders have ballooned in and been snagged on the shrouds. Spiders are everywhere.

Spiders... Note to Ron: even boats out on our club moorings were plagued with spiders--apparently there is a variety that can fly or parachute! After dark, I would make the rounds on deck with a flashlight and a can of Raid insect spray. By the second night of a weekend, most within arms length were deceased. "Spider Away" and "Home Defense" are both chemical deterents used with varying success against the ones that inhabited the docks, but on a boat would become a sticky issue in the hot sun. I found that dryer cloths under the sail cover did little good--raising the main after not sailing the boat for more than two week resulted in a rain of 8-leggers of all sizes!

While traveling from Fla. last spring I was raising the main and had to unzip the sail-pack. Somewhere while climbing around I had been bitten by one of these bugs but didn't notice anything until my wife had pointed it out. By then we were off-shore headed for Charleston. The welt was 3" round, red, and a raised spot in the center, no bite mark. Two days later the spot was still there so I stopped in at a Charleston hospital (near City Marina) to get it checked out. They could only advise me to come back if it got worse. We kept moving with the good weather and the spot faded away after two more days. I kept an eye out for spiders the rest of the trip home. All U Get

I have used Simple Green with a lot of success to remove the spider tracks.

I use a product called Suspend SC on the boat and at home. It kills spiders and most insects and is very safe for pets and people after it has dried. It leaves no odor, even when first applied. It comes as a concentrate that you add water too. In its concentrated form, i can detect a slight latex paint kind of smell, but that required putting my nose almost in the bottle. If you spray the cabin, nobody would be able to tell by odor. It's very effective against spiders, roaches, & ants. It has a long list of bugs that it can be used against, but those are the biggest pests around here. I live on the edge of a large swamp in south La. When I first moved in, 16 years ago, we had a problem with spiders in the house. I never saw any brown recluse or black widows, but being the only male with 2 young daughters, they may have well as been all brown recluses and black widows. We also would get ants inside. Suspend SC was recommended by the local do it yourself pest control store. I have been using it ever since, and have had zero problems with ants, rarely see a spider inside, and never really had problem with cockroaches, which is unusual for south La. My neighborhood is full of live oaks where they supposedly live, but we also have a pretty large population of anoles, gecko's, skinks, snakes, etc. that possibly keep the larger insects in check. I spray all the higher bilge areas that never get wet, the nooks and crannies where I would stay if I was a spider, the bilge ventilation openings, and the dock lines. Supposedly this stuff dries to a crystalline form that bugs pick up and ingest when cleaning themselves. Spiders are supposedly like cats and will clean themselves all the time. I've read on the package that it can be used to treat human bedding and pillows for bed bugs and lice. Luckily, we had no lice outbreaks at any of the schools my kids went to and never used it, but is supposedly safe after it dries.

Look at the positives. The spiders silk is about the best wind direction indicator there is and on my boat, when the light is right, these wind indicators are spaced from the deck to the top of the mast and all over the sails so you really get a great amount of information. Saves a fortune in tell tales. As for the poop, I use LA's Totally Awesome cleaner. It is available from one of the Dollar store type chains and really melts spider and bird poop stains away with no scrubbing. It works great on many tough stains and is cheap. Just spray it on, let stand for a minute or two and hose it off

zeehag

hose the boat down irregularly and open stuff irregularly and watch as they webs appear in your shrouding..... awesome pretty in morning hours, pita in rest of day... they bite nasty, but they also donot walk your lines.. they make their own and they LOVE bugs, which are many in tropics...... as much as i do not like spidey, there is a reason for em.. i like gekkos better, but they are harder to get on the boat .....

shemandr

As long as we're on the subject, I have a little problem with the little buggers which is well known to my sailing friends after I published the attached article in our newsletter. Or at least I tried to attach it.

Prevent spiders on your boat There is a product called Home Defense it is to be sprayed around your home perimeter, doors etc. can be used inside or outside and lasts for months. I spray it on a rag and wipe it on railings, lifelines and anywhere spiders might land. They will avoid it at all costs. Works for all bugs including ants. Let me know how it works for you. Granted I'm not in a high volume bug zone. You may need to use it a bit more often. Spiders can fly on the wind. I've seen spider threads in open water!

These sprays all seem to contain some type of pyrethroid insecticide. If you read up on them they are all very toxic to fish and some are very toxic to humans. I think I'll stick with hosing off the boat, cleaning up the spots and removing the spiders I see.

bshock

I too can recommend Ortho Home Defense. Last year it was a constant battle with the spiders on the western part of Lake Erie. I would go at them once they came out of their hidey holes at dusk with Raid, but they'd always be back the next weekend. Since I started using Ortho Home Defense, once application would last weeks. I've only applied it twice this year with excellent results. I spray the bimini and the other places I've seen the spiders use as a refuge, such as the nooks and crannies of the steering wheel column.

I use Ortho Home Defense spray inside and out. I also epoxied window screen over my vent holes on the aft of the cockpit so now I get airflow but no bugs. I also had bees coming in those vents so I HAD to do something. It's either that or get a few pet geckos...they eat bugs like it's going out of style!

NotCook

Spiders seem to come out and start weaving new webs about dusk. To dispatch them, use a shotgun with about #9 buckshot, or a machete for the close ones.
