Home Loans Made ClearSouthern Cross Yacht Club precinct closing for redevelopmentCanberra Southern Cross Club Yacht Club and Snapper & Co. Photo: Michelle Kroll. A new look Snapper & Co will debut this spring on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin at Yarralumla, opening the venue up to a broader range of dining experiences. The Southern Cross Yacht Club, Snapper and the MV Southern Cross will be closed from Monday 2 May to allow for redevelopment of the popular lakeside destination. Following the introduction of the Courtyard Bar last spring plus the opening of new facilities for the Canberra Yacht Club, this is stage two of the redevelopment program. The Canberra Southern Cross Club owns and operates Snapper & Co and CEO Ian Mackay said the refurbishments would not reduce the current offering but enhance it to cater for a wider audience. “Fresh fish and chips in a family-friendly environment at one of Canberra’s best locations; that’s our core promise, which we will absolutely continue to deliver,” he said. “While we will retain the magic of that casual experience in our courtyard and on the lawns of the lake, the refurbishment will deliver more opportunities for varied audiences, occasions and celebrations. I envision people coming for a long, lazy afternoon where they can sip an Aperol Spritz and listen to live music, while families can still picnic and kick a ball beside the lake. “The addition of indoor dining also means cold, windy or rainy weather doesn’t need to spoil plans.” READ ALSO ‘Surreal’ Red Hill home, The Nest, takes Canberra architecture to new heights Stage two will see the creation of a new indoor dining space and an upgrade to the existing courtyard. In addition, an extension of the kitchens will enable expanded menu options when Snapper & Co re-opens. The re-opening will also feature a new area called The Deck at Snapper & Co. Situated on the site of the old Lakeside Marquee, The Deck will offer an alfresco full-service dining space taking advantage of the beauty of the lakeside location. This space will be available for private functions and event bookings. The Club’s plans also include external pergolas to rear paved and decking areas and the installation of a new outdoor fireplace, outdoor furniture and shade umbrellas. Canberra Southern Cross Yacht Club. Photo: Canberra Southern Cross Club. A new deck will have an unimpeded view of the lake after a row of five melaleucas is removed and replaced with dryland grasses. The trees will be replaced by five new melaleucas planted nearby. New glazed concertina folding doors will secure an elevated dining area. “The Deck will offer full waiter service and the ability to book a table – it’s for those after a more enhanced dining experience than picnic-style on the lawns,” Mr Mackay said. READ ALSO Construction to begin this year on long-awaited permanent home for dragon boating Other plans include landscaping, new lighting, new waste and gas meter enclosures and minor alterations to the building facade. The proposal will expand the ground floor’s gross floor area by 73 sqm, but the upper level will be unchanged. The outside temporary marquee structure will be removed. The new design is a creative collaboration between local Canberra architects Munns Sly Moore and interior design company Pony Design Co. Canberra builders Projex will complete the project. The upstairs restaurant and bar at the Southern Cross Yacht Club Restaurant and MV Southern Cross will re-open on Sunday 31 July. Downstairs, the all-new Snapper & Co retail offer featuring The Deck, The Courtyard and, of course, takeaway fresh fish and chips enjoyed on the lakeside lawns is expected to open in mid-September. Select your rating Overall rating 1595 reviews So, my airline cancelled my flight and ended up putting us in the nearby Sheraton hotel as they worked to rebook us on the next possible flight out of San Diego. Well, the Sheraton hotel was pleasant and the staff was friendly. We were given a King bed and the space was pleasantly sized - the water pressure from the shower was amazing and it actually felt pretty clean inside. Staff was also very helpful. Once we found out our flight the next day was in the late afternoon, my fiancé called the front desk to ask about a late check out and we were allowed to stay in till 2pm at no cost. The market/cafe they have in the lobby was nice enough - we both grabbed a coffee in the morning with breakfast sandwiches and ate in the lobby of the restaurant/bar area. Overall, it wasn't our choice to spend the night in San Diego, but the hotel we were in was nice enough and we can't really complain with the free shuttle to the airport. The only downside I'd say is that there was some banging noises during late morning... not sure if it was the construction. Disappointing Stay at Sheraton Hotel and Marina Currently staying at the Sheraton Hotel and Marina, my experience has been underwhelming compared to the expected standards. The hotel layout is more akin to a motel, with guest rooms in separate buildings that require navigating outdoors lugging your luggage further than I have at large all inclusive resorts and more than a guest should. This setup led to confusion as I ran into two other guests, who were also lost. I tried to call the front several times with no answer, then finally someone picked up but had no idea where my room was located or how to help me find it, she suggested I walk back to the front desk. I and two other guests had to trek back to reception with our luggage for directions. This was due to poor logistics and service, not guest confusion . The shuttle service gives priority to airline staff, causing other guests to wait despite arriving earlier. Despite being the first to arrive after the first shuttle left, I decided to pay for a taxi when I saw more airline staff arriving knowing I would likely be bumped again. This was also disappointing as I'd not anticipated laying for transportation. Security concerns further marred my stay; the external room doors in the motel buildings feel unsafe and I've had personal security scares in rooms like this. When I requested a room change late at night for safety reasons, the staff advised me to wait until morning, which did not address my immediate discomfort. Despite updated rooms, they have not been used or "finished" as guest services said when I called to request a blow dryer and was told they only have one runner so it may be a bit, ultimately making me late for today's conferences, the overall service, management and layout do not meet the expected Sheraton standards, and I hope this review helps others set their expectations accordingly and elevate the experience standards in the future. Our two-night stay at Sheraton Marina left much to be desired. Despite reserving renovated rooms, the experience was marred by several disappointments. Parking was a nightmare, always full and inconvenient. The soundproofing in the rooms was inadequate, leading to disturbances from neighboring guests. Furthermore, the elevators on the north side were out of service, making it difficult to access the main lobby. To top it off, the pool heater was malfunctioning, limiting our enjoyment of the amenities. On a brighter note, the hotel's proximity to SD Adventures was convenient, allowing us to easily rent jet skis for some fun on the water. However, these positives were overshadowed by the numerous drawbacks of our stay. Overall, while the location may be convenient for certain activities, improvements are needed to enhance the overall guest experience at Sheraton Marina. Our car was hit while parked here for a week. We unfortunately had the sentry off to save our battery. We contacted them to see if they by chance had video and never got a call back. Contacted again, no call. Obviously they couldn't care less. I attended a holiday party here last night for a company and it seemed like there was also another bigger party going on that same night as well. If you have 2 huge company parties and anticipating a big crowd, they should have been more prepared for parking and managed it better. It was a horrible mess that caused traffic on the street. There were also no signs for the smallest holiday party I attended which is horrible considering a company booked you for a venue for about 300-400 guests so we got lost looking for the room especially since the bigger party was in front and basically took over. We had a buffet style dinner and basically served ourselves when each table was called out to get in line. The food was your typical American buffet style food. My husband did not like it at all surprisingly especially since he actually likes American food but I honestly thought it was okay and not bad because I've had way worse before! The food actually had flavor and wasn't dry or anything so I kind of enjoyed it. Stunning waterfront views, close proximity to the airport, and available airport shuttle are some of the benefits at staying at this Sheraton property. I stayed here for 4 nights for a convention and experienced both the pluses and minuses of this location. The property location affords stunning views of the waterfront. The outdoor pool is the prime location to relax and soak up the California sun. There are fire pits located near the pool and ample seating to accommodate a decent sized crowd. There's a waterfront path perfect for early morning or evening walks. My room was quite comfortable. The room was very clean all countertops and surfaces were dust free. Theres an abundance of power and USB plugs. There was even has an adjustable work table. Other room features include motion sensor lights in the restroom, safe, Keurig, refrigerator, and a balcony. The downside of this location is the remoteness from other restaurants. Aside from the in property restaurants, one would require an Uber ride. The close proximity to the airport means aircraft sounds can still be heard despite the closed balcony door. Morning line for coffee at the lobby coffee shop can get long due to the limited options. Overall, this is a great alternative if staying near the airport is a priority. Accessibility to nightlife will required a rental car of ride share. See all photos from Karlo G. for SAN Airport parking at Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina Weekend trip with R. Last minute place to stay and we were lucky enough to get this hotel. I never thought I would say this BUT Duck Fries are a must! . We came back to our room with a leak but Clara at the front desk was so freakin amazing and she got everything squared away and added a few little perks that made our day. I Really it's a 4 star hotel but Clara made it's a 5 star experience! Weekend with the love of my life It was ok....didn't appreciate the construction, nor being awakened EARLY in the morning to a jack hammer...or hearing pounding through the walls in the lobby. But nothing that I controlled. The hotel was clean...they did the best they could I guess....but I have to say they weren't ready for the convention of almost 3,000 women! The new restaurant Rumorosa left much to be desired...San Diego being the food mecca it is...it just didn't hit the mark for me. Thank goodness for the cafe...it had some items that were more palatable in a crunch. Was grateful for Instacart and Doordash! Would I stay here again...probably not! But it was ok. There are so many other choices closer to transportation and activities. It's been said; A Great Day at a women's convention, always starts with a Great Breakfast! (I've always found this to be true!) I spent a day at a convention at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina. A couple of friends and I, started our morning with breakfast at Rumorosa's. The view was as breathtaking as I am under dive bar lights! (I don't frequent bars anymore, but I actually look like a Goddess, in dim lights. That's how I snagged my current favorite husband, Ray's attention. That's a fun juicy love story for another time!) Menu described their breakfasts so well, it made my mouth water! I ordered the Horchata Overnight Oats and was extremely happy! My tastebuds were doing the cha-cha! One of my friends ordered the Churro Pancakes. They were delicious...then she ran out of syrup, only a small amount of syrup came with the breakfast (about a tablespoon was provided for 3 pancakes). She kept trying to get any servers attention for more syrup. She asked one of the table runners for syrup, he never came with it. Finally our server came back to table to check on us, pancakes were cold by then. We asked if she could just warm them up in the microwave and if we could have more syrup. She came back to table and told us; her manager said "no, we can't warm them for you, but we are taking them off your bill." While that was really great customer service, taking only her pancakes off the bill but her whole breakfast. She really just wanted them heated (actually I did, too, because I was dying for a bite). It was very busy, so the manager and staff were busier than an Amazon driver during Christmas! They definitely deserve some grace. The presentation of food was not deceiving it was exactly as described! (Unlike the deceiving men, that I've met in my past) I can't wait to try another meal at Rumorosa's! So Sheraton said they could handle the amount of people for the convention that was going on this weekend. But there is still a lot of tables available. So I originally ordered the salmon with strawberry sauce and my cousin got tortilla soup with chorizo. After the brought the salmon out I was could not believe what they considered salmon and it was a for 21 dollars. It was only salmon shavings like slivers of it. The staff I could barely understand but when I told them I did not want the salmon because that I not what I expect it to be. They got upset but still brought me tortilla soup as well. And they made sure to take it off the bill. Honestly this hotel was not ready for this event we had going on at the Sheraton. I feel like all around the service we were provided by the whole hotel was poor.
