On test. FIM 470 Regina: class, power and lots of light

  • Alessio Molla
  • November 3, 2022

I had been waiting a long time for testing the FIM 470 Regina , the latest addition to the magnificent collection of FIM – Fabbrica Italiana Motoscafi , and finally the day has come. I had already assimilated her beauty and innovations on paper, but when I saw her docked at the Marina di Varazze, I immediately realized that what I knew was just the tip of the iceberg. Indeed, you can only perceive certain things by getting on board, exploring the spaces, putting your hands on the control console and facing the sea.  Every corner of this open sports yacht designed by Paolo Ferragni is thought out in a modular manner. However, it is not enough to say that it is possible to modify the exterior and interior spaces as required, because this jewel is built to adapt to all needs, with the ultimate aim of providing the maximum living experience and leaving guests completely immersed in an elegant and refined atmosphere, where everything is intended to seduce and amaze.

And so it did. This yacht has completely enchanted me, and now I will tell you why.

fim 470 regina side view

The FIM 470 Regina in detail

I want to tell you about her as she appeared before my eyes. At 15.10 metres long and with a beam of 4.40 metres, her spaces are absolutely enviable. The stern cockpit is mechanized, raising and lowering as required: in one mode it is perfect for facilitating the launching or hauling of a tender or jet ski, revealing two retractable steps. But in an instant it lifts up to show its full extent, creating a single spacious central area that ensures maximum liveability.

Spaces are designed to be exploited to the full. The boat is designed to make the most of open air spaces, thanks to the moving stern and bow systems. The forward sundeck translates sideways to create a true beach area, a layout that the designers have dubbed “Bow Life”: by dividing the sun deck in half, a reinforced glass panel can be walked on, providing stunning light for one of the two owner’s cabins, a table can be added and turned into a dining area, and it can even be filled with water to create a small swimming pool… wonderful.

The aft cockpit can also be extended by means of a mechanism that divides the sundeck. This creates a spacious central area that is perfect for enjoying a relaxing day at sea, diving and lounging on the elegantly finished couches.

The helm station is spacious, modern, dominated by the black colour. I can’t wait to get my hands on the steering wheel, which is a piece of craftsmanship made especially for this boat, but I have to wait a little longer for that, first I want to get below deck.

fim-470-regina top view

The two owner’s cabins are to two junior suites filled with details of pure elegance, many of them designed by Liu Jo. In the main owner’s cabin, the double bed can be split in two and a reinforced glass on the bow opens up above your head, letting in plenty of natural light that joins that of the large side windows. We are talking about a four-metre room, so spacious that it feels like being in a 60-footer.

Both cabins have a ensuite head with shower, sanitary ware and elegant Nobili enamelled steel fittings. Every corner conceals a drawer, a hideaway wardrobe, and the look is never dull: the headboards of the beds are in hand-stitched Primo Fiore leather, the mattresses are of superlative quality and comfort, the lighting is all indirect LED, and each of the two rooms has its own climate control, as are the audio and video devices. All this is Full Domotics, meaning that everything is controllable from an app (but also with a classic interface): the icing on the cake of an open yacht that has definitely raised the bar.

If the look has literally seduced me, resting my hands on the steering wheel sends a shiver down my spine. It is obvious that having something so exclusive in your hands leads you to treat it with the utmost attention, but I quickly overcome this reverential fear because I feel very comfortable: it is time to start the test of the FIM 470 Regina.

The sea conditions are quite tricky, with waves of about a metre and a half and a lot of wind: there are 12 of us on board including me. As we leave the marina and get familiar with the instruments, I look up and realize that there are six of us on the bridge, four seated and two standing.

We attack the sea, it’s really rough, but the hull is perfectly designed, it slices the wave in half decisively, limiting the inevitable bounce by quite a bit, and it does it constantly, one wave after another, so much so that I’m tempted to keep putting the throttles down.

awning

The boat is revealing all its sportiness. The two Volvo Penta IPS 800 engines with 600 hp each are giving me a tremendous boost, the hull does the rest. I turn slightly to port, take in the sea, and turn for a moment to see how the others on board with me are: from their faces they are really enjoying it, and so I decide that we can give ourselves one last thrill.

I turn sharply to starboard and put the throttles down a bit more, the Fim 470 Regina is touching 30 knots and the waves seem even higher than before: it’s almost a challenge, a fun challenge that gives everyone a thrill. Despite the wind and a few drops of rain, we are all amazed: no creaking, no vibration, no hesitation. What a beautiful boat!

Once ashore, I still have all the emotions of this dizzying hour at sea on me. I linger a moment longer to look at her, she is beautiful there is little to say. But that’s not all; she’s elegant and sporty at the same time, she’s gritty but attractive, she’s big, spacious without compromising her agility.

I realize that I have had a rare experience, from the front row moreover, and I think that next summer I would like to be nowhere else but on board this wonderful yacht.

FIM 470 Regina review: Cruising Queen

470 regina yacht

This innovative Italian cruiser is a sophisticated little yacht brimming with fresh ideas, boasting delightfully designed interiors

After the great success of their first cruiser – central console day cruiser Regina 340 – relatively new Italian yacht builder FIM debuted an even more ambitious model in Cannes . 470 Regina is a full fledged central console cruiser, with a tall hull and sides, but as slender and the smaller previous model, thanks to the dynamic profile rising slightly from the aft to the bow, and the black hull window line parallel with that rise.

FIM 470 regina motor yacht

Peeking above the sides, the central command console is shielded by a T-top and a tall windshield. Just like on the previous model, colors are important on this one, as well, and the new FIM 470 Regina is available with a golden hull, white superstructure and sofas, and black T-top.

The large aft platform is submersible, to allow easy access to water to swimmers, and make tender maneuvers easier. When in lower position, the platform allows access to the main deck.

On the main deck, right next to the platform lies a large sunpad, available as a single or two-mattress (option), and with folding backrests that allow transformation into deck chairs. The platform lies next to the cockpit, a step higher, and different in style.

The cockpit is furnished with an L-shaped sofa and a bar with an electric grill, a wine cooler and a sink, all adequately sized. In front of the bar, the central command post is served by three seats and protected by a T-top and w aide windshield, perfectly suitable for all weather conditions.

FIM motor yxcht exterior

The command console is meticulously designed, made in stylish black PVC and served by two multi-functional Raymarine touchscreen displays with a dedicated interface. Next to them, there is one smaller screen serving the Volvo engine system, as well as a compact steering wheel, two Volvo throttle levers and the IPS joystick. The bow looks simple enough, until you take a closer look and discover another innovative solution, Bow Life: the bow sunpad splits into two side pads, with a large skylight of the below deck VIP cabin between them.

Below deck, the designers have worked just as hard and demonstrated just as much genius as on the deck. The unit debuting in Cannes had light wood furnishing, dark wooden floors and white leather ceiling, but FIM offers full customization. Next to the command console, there are stairs leading below deck and into the small galley, which serves as a foyer of sorts, connecting the three cabins; the full-width mid-ship master, and two guest cabins.

470 regina yacht

The master boasts standing height, and has a double bed set at a 45-degree angle right, and a cozy sofa left. In addition to double-height side windows, the master has another glass panel, connecting it to the shower cabin (option). The bathrooms are stylish, with ceramic finish designer stainless steel sinks, and PVD-coated faucets and showers protected from scratches. The VIP cabin in the bow has one large bed in the very bow and a private head, as well as a large desk. This study corner is in the three-cabin version is replaced by a small guest cabin with Pullman beds.

In standard version, FIM 470 Regina is powered by 2 x IPS 650 (2 x 480 hp), while in Cannes we tested a unit powered by 2 x Volvo IPS 800 (2 x 600 hp). We reached planning speed at 17 knots (200 rpm, 112 liters of fuel per hour), and went 0 to 20 in 11 seconds. Optimal cruising speed is 26 knots (2500 rpm, 155 l/h), and fuel consumption goes up to 230 l/h at 33 knots of cruising speed. Top speed is 39 knots, with no load.

FIM 470 Regina is a meticulously designed model showing vision and potential worthy of a much larger model by a much larger builder, and another proof that smaller builders can be more than competitive in the market.

Huntington Beach city clerk race heats up

Regina Blankenhorn, left, and Lisa Lane Barnes, right, are the two candidates for the office of Huntington Beach city clerk.

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

For the first time in more than eight years, Huntington Beach voters will seat a new city clerk when the general election is held in November.

Current City Clerk Robin Estanislau is retiring, and two candidates — Regina Blankenhorn and Lisa Lane Barnes — are vying for a four-year term.

The first couple of weeks of the campaign have already proven contentious.

Barnes hired an attorney to challenge Blankenhorn’s ballot designation of “city executive coordinator.” Her team argued that this was misleading, since Blankenhorn held that position in the city of Tustin — not in Huntington Beach.

“The ballot designation is very important, and when you use the word ‘city’ … it implies that you work in that city,” Barnes said. “Your ballot designation cannot be misleading, and that is misleading.”

The issue did not require litigation. On Monday, Estanislau agreed to reject Blankenhorn’s initial ballot designation and change it to her second alternative “municipal executive coordinator.”

Blankenhorn said she respected the decision.

“Executive coordinator is my job title, and I work for a city,” she said. “I thought it made sense. They said it was misleading, that people would think I was appointed to something or that I worked in Huntington Beach. I was like, everyone Googled me already and found out I worked for Tustin.”

Lisa Lane Barnes is currently a member of Huntington Beach's Community and Library Services Commission.

For the record, Barnes’ ballot designation lists her as “businesswoman/Huntington Beach commissioner.”

Blankenhorn has been an executive coordinator for Tustin for 11 years, providing support to its city manager and city council in their dealings with the public and outside agencies, including media, while ensuring that policies and procedures are adhered to by the council.

A 25-year resident of Huntington Beach, she was previously an instructor in the Coastline Regional Occupational Program. She’s currently the chairperson for the Enterprise Corp. for the Coast Community College District, a for-profit corporation that operates the swap meets at Orange Coast and Golden West colleges.

Blankenhorn, who said she was listed as No Party Preference for years before recently registering as a Democrat, believes her experience in municipal government sets her apart.

“I want to make sure that a person who’s in there is experienced, because that person is going to be a department head and they’re going to have to lead that department and staff,” she said. “It’s not just a matter of conducting city council meetings. The city clerk is the elections official, and they’re also the records keeper.”

Among Blankenhorn’s endorsements are the city clerk of Laguna Beach, Ann Marie McKay.

Blankenhorn said that when she found out that Barnes was the only one running at the time, she decided to throw her hat in the ring.

“I didn’t know her name,” Blankenhorn said. “I just knew someone was running that was a Realtor in town and had absolutely no municipal government experience. I thought that was wrong. As a resident myself, I would not want to have an inexperienced person in that position. So that’s why I decided to run.”

Regina Blankenhorn was an ROP teacher before landing her current position working for the city of Tustin.

Barnes countered that she directly serves the City Council in her current role as a Community and Library Services Commissioner , a position to which she was appointed by Councilman Tony Strickland in 2022.

Her background is is business. She said she previously worked for a global chemical manufacturing company before settling in as a local real estate agent two years ago.

“It’s always been one of my goals to be deeply involved with my community,” said Barnes, who has lived in Huntington Beach for a dozen years. “When I was working corporately, I did a lot of travel, and that really prohibited spending as much time as I would like to within our community. When that changed and I became a Realtor, it was a great opportunity for me to really anchor myself in the city and just become involved.”

She sees becoming the city clerk as an extension of that. As to Blankenhorn’s contention that she is unqualified, she noted that she’s proud to be on a commission that advises the City Council on what to do with Huntington Beach’s 78 parks, five libraries and one golf course.

Barnes said she has conservative values. She has endorsements from the Republican Party of Orange County, Mayor Gracey Van Der Mark, Mayor Pro Tem Pat Burns, City Atty. Michael Gates and state Sen. Janet Nguyen, whose District 36 includes Huntington Beach.

“I’m embedded in the fabric of this community,” Barnes said. “I’ve never met [Blankenhorn], I’ve never seen her at a City Council meeting. I’ve never seen her at a city event in Huntington Beach, because she’s in Tustin.”

Huntington Beach City Clerk Robin Estanislau is retiring after eight years in her role.

As the conductor of municipal elections, the city clerk could see increased importance in Surf City in future years.

In March, Huntington Beach voters approved Measure A , which means the city could require voter identification, provide more in-person voting locations and monitor ballot drop-boxes starting in 2026. Weeks later, California Atty. General Rob Bonta and Secretary of State Shirley Weber filed a lawsuit in Orange County Superior Court , arguing that Measure A was illegal and preempted by state law.

Blankenhorn said she’d be ready to go on day one if elected.

“When I don’t know something, I’m going to have my staff to help me, guide me and direct me,” she said. “And I’ll have other city clerks that I can turn to. I know city clerks.”

Barnes also believes she is qualified, adding that the livelihood and well-being of the community were important to her.

“When I became involved, I loved it,” she said. “I absolutely loved it, and I wanted to do more for our community … I believe I am the best candidate.”

Life, upturned by a dream – Meet Smart Girl Regina Petra Meyer

M eet Regina Petra Meyer – emerging author, a lover of life, an adventurer, a spiritual seeker, and a passionate humanitarian. Thank you Regina for sharing your story! -Hannah

All I wanted when I stepped aboard a plane bound for the Caribbean, was to have a three-month sailing adventure. Nothing more, nothing less.

My travels started with a duffel bag stuffed with a small number of personal items, a few jars of vegemite and packs of nuts to augment the boat's pantry and, most importantly, with the high hopes of someone that is reaching for their dream but has no real inkling of what they just let themselves in for.

I did not plan to fall in love abroad. But life, and love, took me by surprise and had me refocus on a future on distant shores, worlds away from my secure reality in Australia. I was in for a turbulent ride, onshore as much as out at sea. Instead of navigating the width of the Pacific on a cruising yacht, I ended up setting sail for new horizons, quite literally.

HI Everyone! Hannah here – Please check out Chapter One of Change of Course – Regina’s incredible memoir – here on Smart Girl Stories.

She’s pretty amazing!

The untainted freshness of adventure made my tastebuds tingle in anticipation and, in my mid 30s and feeling disenchanted with my current life, I decided that it was time to take decisive action. Sailing across a major ocean was one of those items on my bucket list and it required ticking off. The sooner the better. It turned out that for years I had mistakenly assumed that sailing a yacht around the world was exclusive to affluent people and had resigned myself to the fact that this was the type of adventure forever outside my financial grasp.

I am an emerging author, a lover of life, an adventurer, a spiritual seeker, and a passionate humanitarian. I love philosophical and honest conversations in stimulating company, best enjoyed over a mouthwatering meal and a glass of wine. Then again, I equally adore curling up quietly with a book and a cup of tea. I am excited to have launched my memoir  Change of Course  and continue writing on my second book. Regina Petra Meyer Author and Presenter

An avid reader, the only ailment to somewhat dull my sailing itch was to devour any boating books from the local library. Indeed, while reading Jesse Martin's Lionheart I came across a passage that forever changed my thinking. He described crewing on other people's yachts to gain skills and experience. My heart skipped a few beats while my brain processed the perception-shattering message: I didn't need to be wealthy to sail across oceans! Instantly, the book was flung aside, and my attention latched onto the laptop screen. I found several reputable-looking websites that connected potential crew with boats of all shapes and sizes, cruising among exotic islands, along rugged coastlines and even in the most far-flung corners of the globe. At the time I was living in New Zealand, and it was a particularly frosty winter's day that found me scrolling through lists of yachts offering to host willing crew. In awe about such abundance of adventures, I quickly put up my profile. Who knew that vagabonding the oceans had been hovering at my fingertips all along?

After careful selection, I picked a boat in the Caribbean. We planned to sail the 46-foot cruiser/racer, a rustic wooden yacht built in the 70s, from its base in Antigua all the way back to Australia. The passage was planned via the Panama Canal, the Galapagos islands and countless stopovers in dazzling anchorages in the South Pacific along our way.

Little did I know that the Caribbean was going to feature much more prominently in my future than purely marking the starting chapter of my sailing adventure. I had yet to learn that boat plans are about as dependable as impassioned promises proclaimed during a stirring first date. Our skipper turned out to be an old-school, cantankerous man in his 70s and was impossible to please. After several weeks of free labour aboard, tension boiled over, and the trip suddenly fell apart. My dreams foundered like an old ship heaving its last breath in a storm. Suddenly, I was stranded in Antigua and considered catching a plane home.

It was due to the encouraging words of fellow crew that had me gather my breath, evaluate my situation and adjust my focus on new goals. A few days later, I was accepted on another yacht and instead of crossing the Pacific, sailed across the Atlantic in the company of a young and cheerful crew.

This would have been a straightforward story. We all know, however, that life is never quite as smooth or clear cut. Neither was my situation. Not long before departing Antigua I had met and inevitably become smitten with an attractive local man. Spending two weeks at sea was the perfect remedy for my conflicted heart, the irresistible pull of the new and exotic, versus the stable but somewhat stale relationship that was waiting for me in Australia. After the first days of inner turmoil I cast my worries overboard and let the freedom of the open ocean embrace my soul. The infinite seascape surrounding our yacht was mesmerising and was matched by an equally limitless sky. Before I set off, I thought that being at sea for days, or weeks, on end might be boring. I was wrong.

I adored waking up each day to a different hue of the ocean. To calm days with lazy swell rolling underneath the boat's hull. Rough and grey hours that had me braving spray of cold water splashing into my face and body from the bow during my solitary watches. I was dazzled by bioluminescence turning our wake into a glowing and swirling artwork. And for a few days we sat mid-ocean in eery stillness while completely becalmed, the yacht resting atop a mirrorlike sea and enveloped by dense wafting fog. It was magic and peaceful and thrilling and precisely how I had mapped out my dreams.

It was this outer calm that allowed for a slow internal clarity to take hold. I realised that the relationship with my long-term partner in Australia had run its course. With no desire to resume my old life, I was clueless on where and how to forge my new existence. Although uncomfortable, this void was my opportunity to savour the freedom I had been yearning for. Should I stay in Switzerland, my home country, and nurture the relationship with my folks? Or should I return to Australia, my adopted country, and establish myself and put down roots in a new town? Maybe I could travel a bit more and allow my life to unfold as I journey?

I loved sailing and had no desire to settle down just yet. There was nothing holding me back. And, of course, I did have a pending romance in the Caribbean. What greater adventure could there be than pursuing a fresh love while attempting to establish myself in a new country? It was on a whim that I decided to make Antigua my new home base and give life in the Caribbean a proper shot. Once on island, I shacked up with my lover and busied myself with job searches and assimilating into my new circumstances.

Was it hard? Yes!

Was it exciting? Very much so .

Would I do it again? Yes, in a heartbeat!

Did it work out? Not how I expected . Better than I could have anticipated. More exciting and fulfilling.

Let me tell you this: Life has a way of working itself out. I love a good challenge, and living in completely new circumstances in Antigua delivered precisely that. It was a thrilling and stimulating period, but at times I also felt bitterly lonely, overwhelmed and completely out of my depth. Over time I learned to adapt, to stand up for myself and to grasp chances when they presented themselves. I became more courageous, learned to trust in myself and my resilience. I accepted that setting out on an adventure is an important first step. Letting go of plans, embracing countless deviations, and diving headfirst into unknown waters and territories was what shaped this extraordinary path.

So, what is my message to you? Don't be afraid to try something new. My life is so much richer for all the people I met, the amazing adventures I experienced, and the challenging moments I mastered. Feel encouraged to move toward your dreams because living life and embracing all its turbulences is truly worth it!
