From the ferry landing, walk north (away from San Francisco).

Alternatively, there is a taxi stand at the corner of Bridgeway and Anchor st. Ride-sharing services like  UBER  and  Lyft  are helpful resources for traveling locally and to/from San Francisco without a personal car.

Driving from San Francisco/Golden Gate Bridge:  Exit Highway 101 north at the second exit after the Golden Gate Bridge onto Alexander Avenue. Follow signs for 1.6 miles into downtown Sausalito. The Schooner Freda B will be on the right in the Sausalito Yacht Harbor, slip 465. The best option for parking is  Municipal lots 3 and 4  Please do not park in the Spinnaker Restaurant’s parking lot.

Driving from San Rafael:   From Highway 101 south, exit at Sausalito/Marin City. At the first light, turn left and go under the freeway. Follow signs to downtown Sausalito via Bridgeway. The harbor is 2 miles south on the left. The best option for parking is  Municipal lots 3 and 4.  Please do not park in the Spinnaker Restaurant’s parking lot.

Bay Area Wildlife Sail Under the Golden Gate

WE WELCOME NEWCOMERS AND FIRST TIMERS AND WE HAVE EVERYTHING YOU NEED ON BOARD!

Location/parking.

We are located at 310 Harbor drive in Sausalito in Clipper Yacht Harbor, slip 106, and there is plenty of free parking. At the end of Harbor Dr there is a railroad crossing type of gate at the entrance to the “main” parking lot. This gate is usually closed early in the morning but often you can follow someone through or someone might open it for you… IF you use this lot please park in spots to the left as spots to the right must be left open for patrons of “Fish.” Restaurant later in the day. 

There is however, ANOTHER LOT !! Many seem to miss it but it is 100 feet before the gate - to the right. This is the preferred lot to park in but please do not park in any spot marked “reserved.” On busy days this smaller lot can get full, and if you can’t get into the big, “main” lot, call us at  (415)548-0150  and we can always come open the main lot gate for you. Our dock is basically straight across from that "RR crossing" type gate - next to the boat launch ramp - by a “Clipper Yacht Harbor” sign. We are 3/4 of the way down that dock on the left "Salty Lady" -  please buy your tickets in advance.

GEAR AND TACKLE

On most trips gear and tackle is provided and included at no charge. Rental rods are available for $20. We are stocked up on all appropriate gear and tackle, but you’re welcome to bring your own as well.

It is customary to tip your deckhand(s). Obviously not required by definition - but much like a waiter in a restaurant - deckhands work very hard for a very modest wage. 10-20 percent is a standard tip in a restaurant where your server waits on you for perhaps 5 minutes. Your deckhand will be there to help and serve you for 8-10 hours. If you think he did a good job… tip him well. If not, please let me know !!! We have a great crew on the Salty Lady...

FISHING LICENSE

Fishing licenses are required for all anglers age 16 and up. Kids 15 years old & younger do not need a Ca. fishing license.

Due to current regulations we cannot sell fishing licenses on board.  They can be purchased at your local sporting goods store or online at the Ca Dept of Fish and Wildlife website.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFO

Coffee and tea are provided and we do have a microwave but bring your own lunch and cold drinks. Beer & wine is permitted, but hard alcohol is not. Becoming inebriated is discouraged and not a great idea on any boat !!!

Dress appropriately… regardless of how hot it may be on land it can often be very cold on the water. It might be warm… but don’t count on it.   Layers !!!

Overall, seasickness is very rare… it happens to a very small percentage of people… but if it happens to you it can make for a very long day. Over the counter motion sickness medications do NOT work if you wait until you start feeling the symptoms !! They DO work well if you take one the night before and one in the morning before you leave to come down to the boat. Check with your health care provider about the Scopolamine patch… probably the most effective preventative measure I have seen in my experience !!

Insiders Tip: Why do we say, “The Real Locations?” The term “Sausalito Boardwalk” is used by various sources to refer to three different places in Sausalito, only two of which actually have wooden sidewalks!

• The  Bridgeway Promenade offers the most famous views in Sausalito and some of the best views of San Francisco anywhere, but its surface is concrete and (on the lower level) asphalt and rocks. No boards to walk on there!
• The boardwalk at the southern end of the Bridgeway Promenade , near the spot in Old Town where Sausalito was founded as a Mexican Rancho in 1838. This boardwalk functions as part of the Promenade, and was once used for a scene in a Rita Hayworth and Orson Welles film .
• The boardwalk north of the Sausalito Ferry pier (facing Sausalito Yacht Harbor and Pelican Yacht Harbor), spanning the border between Downtown Sausalito and the Caledonia St. area, starting at the (wonderful) Books by the Bay bookshop and ending just across from the Seafood Peddler restaurant.

For your humor file: A website owned by a wealthy financier in the Midwest has tried to say that a local pier and a bayside office building deck are also “boardwalks” because they’re made out of wood.

The Northern Boardwalk

If you follow the shoreline north for two blocks from the Sausalito Ferry pier in Downtown Sausalito you’ll come to the foot of Bay St. and the Books by the Bay bookshop, the southern end of this boardwalk.

The Southern Boardwalk

The Boardwalk in  Old Town  (the violet bar on the map screenshot above) runs behind homes and the old Sally Stanford’s Valhalla Restaurant between the foot of the  Bridgeway Promenade  and the foot of Main St. It is famous for being the location of a scene with Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth in the 1947 film, The Lady from Shanghai .

The best Sausalito boardwalk parking spots in this area are the metered spots on Bridgeway, but it’s also a lovely walk down from the city parking lots near the ferry pier.

Terrible, short-tempered, dismissive attitude. The man (I will NOT say gentleman) who answered the phone categorically refused to pass along a short, simple message to a slip holder, claiming his tenants 'don't want to be bothered by such matters'. Well, la-tee-da. Clearly this person has no connection with sailing, or the usual sense of comradery of sailors helping other sailors. A POS attitude such as this is about as far away from the spirit of sailing as one can get.

Best marina in Marin. Clean facilities, well maintained. Great bookkeeping and admin staff. Nice fellow slip mates - helpful and friendly.

Best marina on the West Coast! Mike, Jim, and Elsa do a fantastic job running the marina. The facilities are clean, well maintained and if anything ever needs to be fixed it's done immediately. Everyone, from the management, office staff, and maintenance crew are friendly and do a great job keeping things running smoothly. Fellow boaters are friendly and look out for each other. Great marina!

Spectacular property, well maintained and just about as friendly and accommodating as I have ever come across in my travels around this country. Really went above and beyond to help a fellow sailor in need in a really weird and hard time for all of us. What what what???

This is a beautiful harbor with lots of interesting and expensive boats to look at and the location is smack downtown Sausalito. The owners have recently completed a major renovation of the docks on the parking lot side and the main walkway on the Bridgeway side. I have a few friends who live on boats here and they love the community, however it is very expensive to keep a boat here.

My bride and I lived aboard at SYH for 15 years (late 80s-early 2000s) on our big, classic, well-maintained and very active wooden motor yacht. We were right in the best location in the harbor; ie, downtown. It was a wonderful "golden" era of our lives -and for Sausalito, as well- and we'll never forget it. The community and characters we met there were unforgettable. Herb Madden and his family have run this run this place for many, many decades and were (are) terrific and very kind to us. There are strict and enforced rules which we adhered to carefully and respectfully. This is the finest marina in the SF Bay area and probably the most expensive....but its certainly the BEST by every metric!

Nice place just to walk look at boats and forget everything that is wrong with the world.

These are not nice people and not flexible at all. If you're not rich, they won't even talk to you and have NO interest in helping fellow boaters in anyway unless there is big money in it for them. The manager looks and acts like a used car salesmen, I'm sure that was his last job. These people are not sailors, just BAD businessmen. If you get a slip there, you're in for a rude awakening.

Kayaking Rentals & Tours in Sausalito

Just like sailing, kayaking in Sausalito is a popular activity for locals and tourists. It makes total sense as charming Sausalito sitting in a small harbor in Richardson Bay. If you’re new to the Sausalito kayaking scene, you might wonder where you can find rentals and tours. 

Most locals and websites recommend Sea Trek Sausalito . They were the first commercial sea kayaking business in California and have consolidated as a premier Kayaking and Stand Up Paddle Board Center in San Francisco and Marin. They offer sit-on-top sea kayaks or traditional sea kayaks for rent at an hourly rate. You can choose between single and double kayaks in both categories, with single kayaks costing $30/hour and double kayaks costing $50/hour. They pro-rate based on additional time every fifteen minutes.

Schoonmaker Beach 

Schoonmaker Beach is one of the prime Sausalito kayak launch spots. Located within a yacht harbor area, Schoonmaker Beach has an area of shallow water and easy bay access. You’ll have to unload your kayak first, carry it to the beach, and then find parking. On weekends, you can park at 30 Libertyship Way and on the far southern corner of this lot or Bridgeway street on weekdays.

Dunphy Park Beach

Dunphy Park is another popular launch spot to begin your Sausalito kayaking experience. It is adjacent to the Bay and runs along Bridgeway. You can launch your kayak from the park’s shoreline area along the Bay where there’s a small beach. Make sure you find a water point that’s shallow enough for you to stand in. You’ll find plenty of parking in Dunphy Park.

Turney Street Boat Ramp

Located between Joinery and Salito’s Crab House, Turney Street Boat Ramp is a public ramp that gives boaters and kayakers free access to Richardson’s Bay and San Francisco Bay. There’s also a dinghy ramp where most kayakers launch. This ramp is right next to Salito’s restaurant. You can find public parking a block north away on Bridgeway at Locust. The first three hours are free. 

Where to Go Kayaking in Sausalito 

You’ve rented your kayak and chosen your launching spot. Now, it’s time to set out on your watery adventure. Below you’ll find five gorgeous places to paddle in Sausalito. They all offer scenic views and routes you can choose depending on your kayaking skill set. 

Waterfront Toward Downtown

I can’t deny that much of Sausalito’s charm stems from its fabulous waterfront. While most visitors explore it on foot, you’ll never experience the same gorgeous views as you do when kayaking. Sausalito’s historic waterfront makes for a fantastic kayaking trip.

It is also an excellent way to see the town from a different perspective. You can paddle from Dunphy Park Beach and glide through the waters towards downtown. As you meander, you’ll take in scenic views of Angel Island and Alcatraz , the San Francisco skyline, and Tiburon at a distance. You’ll also paddle along some of Sausalito’s best waterfront restaurants. 

Paddling along the waterfront is an excellent opportunity to see Sausalito’s wildlife. You’ll spot Harbor seals and sea lions, as well as pelicans and cormorants.

Along/In Sausalito Marinas

Speaking of Sausalito’s seaside charm, marinas are powerful contributors to the waterfront’s picturesque and quaint vibes. Sausalito has thirteen marinas located along the waterfront. Each one is unique and has developed its personality throughout the years, with some harboring luxurious boats and others being home to traditional houseboats. While all marinas have that lovely je ne sais quoi, there are two unbeatable ones when it comes to kayaking trips. 

A privately owned marina, Sausalito Yacht Harbor is the most central and one of the most extensive marinas in Sausalito. People who walk along its docks quickly name Sausalito Yacht Harbor as their favorite spot in the city. You’ll do the same once you kayak it. Despite being a densely moored area, Sausalito Yacht Harbor remains peaceful, and the scenery is fascinating, with fancy yachts and the backdrop of SF’s skyline.

Waldo Point Floating Homes

One of the more beloved communities in Marin Country, Sausalito’s Waldo Point Harbor is an excellent kayaking destination for novice paddlers. The houseboat community started in the late 1940s after the end of World War II. Today, you’ll find over 245 floating homes on the five docks of Sausalito’s Waldo Point Harbor. Similar to Sausalito’s waterfront, the view from the kayak is unbeatable.

Kayaking along Sausalito’s Waldo Point Harbor is a historic and scenic experience. You’ll see the most varied and exotic architecture. I mean it when I say each house you look at is unique. Some homes are straightforward, whereas some are eccentric. Other homes pose a linguistic dilemma to visitors who try to find a way to describe them. 

Richardson Bay

Richardson Bay is one of the best places to start your kayaking adventure in Sausalito. The area offers paddling trips for all kayakers, either for beginner or experienced kayakers seeking challenging waters.

If this is your first time in a kayak, you might want to stay closer to the shoreline. The further you get from the piers and docks, the wilder the tides and currents get, which can be grueling for newbies.  Also, the wind might be choppy depending on the weather. You’ll enjoy sweeping vistas of the San Francisco skyline and glimpses of Harbor seals resting on rocks. You can also paddle to Sausalito’s marinas or Waldo Point Floating Homes.

Veteran kayakers can paddle up to the tip of Belvedere or the Mill Valley along Pickleweed Inlet in Richardson Bay. Some even dare to reach Golden Gate Bridge!

Angel Island

Angel Island is a popular Sausalito kayaking trip. However, it is an open-water crossing, so I suggest it for advanced paddlers, who can handle a challenging and long journey.

Many paddlers begin their Angel Island trip in Turney Street Boat Ramp put-in and end it in Ayala Cove, where they allow landing. Those who venture to Angel Island will encounter rougher waters and powerful currents leading outside the Golden Gate. Paddling the current through Raccoon Straight (the strongest currents are here) might be the hardest part. Sometimes, the current is strong, and you’ll get large standing waves, especially where the strait is the narrowest.

If you’d like to hone your surfing skills or just play a little, set out to the northernmost end of Angel Island or between the island and Belvedere. You’ll find a large tidal range with plenty of exciting standing waves!

Excellent information and I especially enjoyed the photos. I was interested to see your description of the paddle from Sausalito to Angel Island. I used to whitewater kayak, even ran the Grand Canyon a couple of times, but get me 50 feet from a visible shore in calm water and I start getting anxious. The scariest paddle I ever did was the 2.5 miles from Sausalito to Angel Island, on a calm day with swells less than 2 feet. Never happier to land my little boat! I think it was just my open water anxiety kicking in, but now I can point to your article to give myself a bit more credibility. 😉

Hi Folks… Thanks for your great info…. Can you please explain why google maps labels Schoonmaker Beach as “Permanently Closed?” Is it? I would like to launch my kayak from there? Are there any kayak launch places closer to Downtown Sausalito? How about anywhere near Tiburon / Belvedere closer to Peninsula Point?

Hi, Andrew! It’s definitely not closed – and I’m not sure why it says that. (When I check on Google, it *doesn’t* say closed, so I’m even more confused!)

In any case, you should be able to put in there. You could also put in at Turney Street, which is closer to Old Town.
