Since before Spanish times, Manila Bay has been a place where boats and ships lay at anchor, waiting to disgorge passengers and cargo from as far away as the Middle East and Japan. Manila Bay may be your first stop South from Subic Bay but most cruising yachts will pass it by. Mostly because, the 23 or so miles from the mouth of the bay to the Metropolis of Metro Manila are mostly featureless and frequently windless (especially at night during the northeast monsoon: November to May). However, mostly by virtue of Metro Manila's prominence as the capitol city of the Philippines, and the fact that the northeast monsoon breezes do blow for most of each day from sunrise to sunset, in 1927 Manila Bay became the original centre for the sport of sailing in the Philippines.
Marinas In Manila Bay
Manila yacht club.
The Manila Yacht Club is located along the waterfront of Manila City, South of the Port of Manila. It features pontoon berths and fore-and-aft moorings for members' yachts but it is almost always full to capacity. Most visiting yachts will have to be satisfied with anchoring just outside the yacht club marina breakwater to the North of the marina.
Visitors are made welcome if they come from reciprocal yacht clubs but otherwise, unless you know a member who is actually visiting the yacht club when you arrive, or you are declaring an emergency, then the yacht club will typically exercise its right to refuse entry. N.B bare feet and flip-flops are no longer acceptable footwear for men within the club – sandals with an ankle strap are the minimum requirement.
If you do need haul-out assistance for some reason then the Manila Yacht Club has a travel-lift and slipway available for a fee. The yacht club has workshops and staff on hand who know where to obtain necessary parts and materials from sources within Metro Manila.
The Manila Yacht Club was once an active, competitive sailing club but since the mid-2000s its enthusiasm for organizing sailing events has largely evaporated. Currently, the Manila Yacht Club only organizes a round-the-cans race on the first Saturday of each month.
Visit the Manila Yacht Club website: www.myc.org.ph
Caylabne Bay Resort Marina
For those with historic charts or Pilot for Manila Bay you may see reference to a marina at Caylabne, fronting the Caylabne Bay Resort, close to the southern entry to Manila Bay, slightly less then two miles southeast of El Fraile 'Drum' Island. This marina previously featured a dozen or so Mediterranean-style, stern-too moorings and an anchorage within the breakwater. The Caylabne Bay Resort Hotel has changed hands and the new owners now offer marina services to suit most casual visitors. Mediterranean-style, stern-too moorings plus swing moorings are offered with space for 50 yachts. The recommended Manila Bay alternative to the Manila Yacht Club.
Visit the Caylabne Bay Resort & Marina website: www.caylabne.com.ph
Anchoring In Manila Bay
Anchoring within Manila Bay is possible almost everywhere except close to the Port of Manila (you would not want to get mixed up with the big ships anyway) and immediately outside the U.S. Embassy – about a mile North of the Manila Yacht Club.
Corregidor Island
One place you may wish to anchor for a day is in the little bay on the North shore of Corregidor Island, where access to the Corregidor war museum and tourist areas are to be found. Corregidor Island was the place of surrender for U.S. Troops during World War II, when the Imperial Japanese Forces invaded the Philippines in 1942. It was from Corregidor that Gen. Douglas MacArthur fled by submarine to Cagayan de Oro, Mindanao; it was in Cagayan de Oro, before boarding a aeroplane for Darwin, Australia, that MacArthur made his famous "I shall return" speech, which of course he did . . . three years later.
Immediately west-northwest of Corregidor is the town of Mariveles. Although largely an industrial town, supporting the filthy oil refineries that lay to the East, it is also an active port for: fishing, shipbuilding and luxury yacht refurbishing. Although there is little to attract a cruising yacht, Mariveles Bay is quite sheltered, except from the southeast, and can make a good bolt-hole if there is some unpleasant weather in the vicinity.
N.B. There are some nasty little rocks immediatley to the southwest of the entrance to Mariveles Bay that are not immediately visible near high tide during poor visibility.
Manila Bay Tourist Attractions
Manila Bay is known for the metropolis of Metro Manila. The metropolis has many historical sites from Spanish times plus of course, it is a modern city with everything you could possibly wish for in terms of museums, entertainment and facilities. As a cruising yacht you may wish to visit the metropolis because almost every nation on Earth has a Consular facility somewhere within Metro Manila.
The list of tourist attractions is too expansive to list here. However, one item of note for sailors: about half a mile due West of the Manila Yacht Club is the home of the Philippine Sailing Association, where the youth of the nation is inspired and motivated to win gold at international sailing events.
Transport Around Manila Bay
There are buses, taxis and hire cars that can take you around the metropolis; outside the metropolis there are usually taxis, jeepneys and tricycles to most popular destinations.
The Manila International Airport ("NAIA") is located to the South of Metro Manila, with scheduled flights to all corners of the planet.

I lived ‘below deck’ on a luxury yacht — here’s what you need to know.
Tahiti, St. Thomas and the French Riviera — I’ve yachted in all of these exotic locales, albeit from the comfort of my couch. And, millions of Americans are in the same boat.
In 2013, “Below Deck,” introduced the masses to the most glamorous mode of traveling: yachting. Since then, it’s become a Bravo mainstay with Season 9 of “Below Deck Mediterranean’’ premiering in June.
But how real is the reality show? I spent five nights on a yacht in Croatia to find out.
A tip on tipping
My suitcase wasn’t bursting with Benjamins. An agency at your final destination provides cash for the crew’s tip money. While you’re expected to tip $30,000 for a two-night cruise on “Below Deck,” in real life you only have to tip 10% to 15% of your charter fee. That’s about $10,000 for a two-night cruise on a 180-foot charter yacht like Mustique (from $250,000 a week), which stars in the new season.
According to Zvonimir Androić, president of the yacht charter company Via Croatia, more often than not, the tip comes from what’s left over after provisioning.
So, shun the Dom Pérignon and skip the beluga caviar, and you’ll have money to spare.
What’s up, dock?
In real life, “Below Deck’s” favorite commercial-break cliff-hanger isn’t nearly as dramatic. Docking in our yacht, Via Croatia’s five-cabin, 100-foot Adriatic Escape (from $52,800 a week), was breezy.
I asked the crew if they hated setting up the slide — a tortuous, Herculean task if you believe what you see on TV.
“It’s not that bad,” a twentysomething Croatian deckhand, as cute as his on-screen counterparts, told me. “That said, we’re definitely not sad if you don’t ask for it.”
Play it cool
Despite being served meat on more than one occasion, my vegetarian co-guests on board weren’t divas when it came to cuisine — a major source of chef-related stress on the show.
Tantrums aren’t the norm Barbie Pascual, the “Below Deck” stewardess famous for putting up with former “RHONY” star Jill Zarin’s demands for the perfect Diet Coke in the “Real Housewives of Grenada” episode, tells me. “Guests know they are being filmed so their reactions are more extreme than they’d be if the cameras weren’t around,” she says.
Pascual’s biggest tip for first-time yachters? Don’t go skinny dipping, like they do on the show, after dark.
“People forget about currents, sharks, etc.,” she says. “Jumping in the water should always be with the captain’s consent!”
Our humorless Croatian yacht captain was a far cry from “Below Deck Mediterranean’s” affable Captain Sandy Yawn. I think we only saw him twice over the course of four days, and he definitely didn’t join us for dinner.
That was fine by us because the stews and deckhands were always handy with anything we needed — including at chat.
Asking for it
“No” is a word you’ll never hear on a yacht, unless there is a safety issue, Pascual says.
While we didn’t ask our crew to do a striptease or decorate for ‘70s night (two recurring requests on the show), out-there demands aren’t out of the question, as long as you’re willing to pay for it.
For example, Via Croatia is currently retrofitting one of its multimillion-dollar superyachts for an upcoming charter booked by a multigenerational Jewish family from Florida.
“In addition to paying the charter fee, the client is literally buying everything new: pots, pans, silverware, et cetera,” said Androić. “They’re even spending $30,000 on a new tender for the elderly mother-in-law.”
Now, I’m no reality show producer, but a picky primary trying to keep his wife, her elderly mom and their kosher kids happy at sea has the makings of an Emmy Award-winning episode.
Yachting on a budget
Charters are cheapest at the beginning and end of a destination’s season. Via Croatia’s yuppiest yacht, the 160-foot, 12-cabin Agape Rose , fetches $200,000 a week in July and August. But it’s just $164,000 a week in April and October. Divide that by 24 of your closest friends and family and it’s just $6,800 a person.
If that’s still too much, consider booking a yacht club suite on one of MSC Cruises ’ Mediterranean voyages.
Sure, you’ll be on a cruise liner, but for $1,659 a person you’ll be treated to seven nights of private butler service with a private pool and restaurant that the pleb passengers don’t even know exists.

Missing revealed as divers search superyacht that sank in storm off Sicily
ROME — Rescue teams and divers were searching Tuesday for six missing people, including a British tech magnate and a Morgan Stanley boss, after a luxury superyacht sank in a storm off Sicily .
The identity of those still missing emerged after an initial search of the 184-foot sailboat, named the Bayesian, was unsuccessful Monday. The British-flagged tourist vessel had 22 people aboard when it sank because of “a violent storm” off Sicily’s main city, Palermo, around 5 a.m. local time (11 p.m. ET) on Monday, the local coast guard said.
Newly released video shows the moment the vessel suddenly sank after being battered by the storm. In the video, the 250-foot mast, which was lit up and lashed by the storm, appears to bend to one side before it disappears and is replaced by darkness.
The grainy images obtained by NBC News and other outlets were recorded on closed-circuit television not far from where the Bayesian was anchored.
Fifteen people were rescued by a boat present in the immediate vicinity and then brought ashore by coast guard vessels, but six passengers, including American, British and Canadian citizens, remained missing, it said. They were believed to be trapped in the boat's hull, some 164 feet underwater, posing a challenge to divers who returned Tuesday to the site off Porticello, near Palermo.
Salvatore Cocina, director of Sicily’s Civil Protection Agency, told NBC News that the missing include British tech magnate Mike Lynch and his daughter, Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife.
Cocina did not specify the nationalities of the missing. He also did not identify Lynch's daughter or the wives of Bloomer and Morvillo.
A spokesperson for Clifford Chance, where Morvillo works as a lawyer, confirmed to NBC News on Tuesday that he and his wife, Neda, were among the missing.
Aki Hussain, chief executive officer of U.K. insurance company Hiscox, where Bloomer is a nonexecutive chairman, confirmed to NBC News on Tuesday that Bloomer and his wife, Judy, were missing.
Italy’s national fire department said that its divers were able to get inside the wreck during a late-night dive Monday, inspecting some cabins under the bridge, but were having trouble navigating because of obstructions and narrow access gates. One of those obstructions was reported to have been caused by furniture from the cabins that moved during the storm that struck the ship early Monday.
Rescuers said that there might be bodies inside the cabins, especially considering the timing of the storm, but that they had so far been unable to check through the ship’s portholes.
Divers were forced to work in 12-minute underwater search shifts because of the depth, while surface searches continued in the area of the shipwreck with a helicopter and a fire brigade boat, it added.
Mike Lynch, who was regularly described in U.K. media as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” was cleared of fraud charges in a blockbuster U.S. trial earlier this summer. Sources told CNBC on Monday that his wife, Angela Bacares, has been rescued. Italian news agency ANSA identified his daughter, missing alongside her father, as Hannah, 18.
Just days earlier, Lynch's co-defendant, Stephen Chamberlain, died after being “fatally struck by a car” while out running Saturday, his lawyer Gary Lincenberg said in an emailed statement.
The sailing vacation that ended in tragedy appeared to be something of a celebration after Lynch’s acquittal — Morvillo was one of Lynch’s U.S. lawyers and Bloomer testified in his defense.
“We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event. Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular our Chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy, who are among the missing,” Hussain, the Hiscox CEO, said in an emailed statement.
A Morgan Stanley spokesperson also said: “Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular the Bloomer family, as we all wait for further news from this terrible situation.”
The Eve Appeal, a British cancer charity, described Judy Bloomer in an emailed statement as “a brilliant champion for women’s health and medical research.”
Britain's Marine Accident Investigation Branch said it was deploying a team of four inspectors to Palermo to conduct a preliminary assessment.
The coast guard said in a statement Monday that the ship’s cook had died. It did not give his nationality. Reuters identified him as Antiguan citizen Ricardo Thomas.
One of the survivors, identified as Charlotte Emsley, 35, told the Italian news agency ANSA that she had momentarily lost hold of her year-old daughter, Sofia, in the water but managed to retrieve her and hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were pulled to safety.
Built by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered, Bayesian can carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist yacht sites.
The yacht’s nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters.
Luca Mercalli, an Italian climatologist and president of the country’s meteorological society, told Reuters that the storm could have involved a waterspout, essentially a tornado over water, or a downburst, a more frequent phenomenon that doesn’t involve the rotation of the air.
Storms and heavy rainfall have swept Italy in recent days after weeks of scorching heat.
“The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit), which is almost 3 degrees more than normal,” Mercalli said. “This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms.”
Claudio Lavanga reported from Rome and Yuliya Talmazan from London.

Is the Lake Erie alligator alive and well? Sighting reported during fourth week of search
Many people are starting to lose hope that the gator of Lake Erie will ever be captured or seen again.
However, others who frequent the lake, including one charter boat owner, still believe that the gator is floating around, alive and well.
Bert Campbell, the owner and operator of Reel Obsession Fishing Charters , claimed that those on the boat spotted the gator just off the point at Lake Erie near East Avenue on Saturday.
Campbell claimed on Facebook that boat occupants saw the gator Saturday just before sunrise as it was stalking a flock of cormorants, but when they got up close to it, the alligator dove under and swam away. A posted photo showed something floating on the water, but the object was too distant to clearly identify.
Campbell confirmed his posted claim to the Times-News on Thursday.
Other claims
Employees from Presque Isle Angler on Lake Front Drive said that they have heard multiple reports of boaters passing the gator out toward the area that Campbell claimed to have spotted it.
No one has been able to show any evidence of claims at this time.
On Aug. 9, Julie Slomski from the Erie-Western Pennsylvania Port Authority told the Erie Times-News: "We have seen no tracks, no trace of it, nothing. If it’s out there, we hope it’s safe and we find it. But we haven’t had any confirmed sightings of it. We haven’t seen it on any (surveillance) camera footage. We don’t have any facts yet to confirm this. But we’re taking it seriously.”
In a text exchange on Thursday, Slomski said the Port Authority is unaware of any confirmed sightings and the charter captain has not reached out to them.
What to do if you spot the gator on Lake Erie
The Daytona Beach News-Journal in Florida shared some tips for Erie as the Atlantic Coast city is in an area that is native to gators. Here is a rundown of their advice:
- Gators are most active between dusk and dawn.
- Keep your eyes peeled for moving shapes.
- Gators tend to hang out near marshy areas near the shore.
- If you see the gator, keep a 30 foot distance.
- Gators can move quickly and lunge.
- If you run from a gator, run in a straight line and do not zig zag.
- If you happen to be attacked, fight back by hitting, kicking, poking it in the eye, provide noise or jam objects in the back of the gator's mouth.
- Seek medical attention if attacked.
There also is still a no-swimming advisory posted on the shore of East Avenue.
Who do you call if the gator is spotted?
If you happen to spot the reptile, please call one of the following numbers, depending on the area it is spotted:
- Erie Port Authority: 814-456-1931
- Presque Isle Rangers: 814-833-7424
- Pennsylvania State Police: 814-898-1641
More: While search continues in Lake Erie for an alligator, could York County have one too?
What we know so far:
- Initial sighting was Aug. 4, but other witnesses claim to have seen signs of it on Aug. 6 and Aug. 24.
- The alligator's location is unknown, but it was possibly seen near the East Avenue boat launch and former Erie Coke Plant area.
- Based on claims, the alligator might be hanging around the marsh area near the point off of East Avenue.
- Multiple residents have claimed to have seen the gator in rocks or spotted signs of tracks, but there is no hard evidence to support the claims.
- A Pennsylvania Waterways Conservation officer was initially part of the search for the alleged gator.
- Erie Zoo Director of Development Scott Mitchell has said that gators can swim up to 20 miles per hour, so it could be anywhere along Lake Erie shoreline.

Crime and public safety | south florida man faces federal charges after passenger killed on scuba charter boat trip.
Dustin Sean McCabe, 49, was charged by indictment Aug. 22, which was unsealed Thursday, federal court records show. He owned and operated Florida Scuba Charters, Inc. while a resident of Palm Beach County and St. Lucie County, according to the indictment.
McCabe bought a 1988, 48-foot Ocean Yachts Cruiser in March 2020 that he named “Southern Comfort,” which was only approved as a recreational boat by the U.S. Coast Guard, according to the indictment. After purchasing the boat, McCabe allegedly had the boat modified so he “could use the vessel for paid scuba charters, with those modifications including removing the main deck engine controls so that the vessel could only be controlled from the bridge,” the indictment alleged.
He operated two commercial charter trips in late March 2020 on the boat. The indictment alleges that on March 29, 2020, McCabe’s negligence in operating the boat “caused the life of M.C.G.F. to be destroyed.” The indictment does not provide further information about the seaman’s manslaughter charge.
The woman is identified in court records in a separate federal wrongful death lawsuit as Mollie Catherine Ghiz-Flynn, of Melbourne. Ghiz-Flynn and her husband went on a dive trip aboard McCabe’s boat, where they stopped at an area known as Breaker’s Reef about a mile-and-a-half offshore southeast of the Palm Beach Inlet near Lake Worth Beach, according to the lawsuit complaint.
Ghiz-Flynn and her husband surfaced after their first dive and were attempting to get onto the back of the boat when McCabe reversed the gearshift of the boat, which sucked both Ghiz-Flynn and her husband underneath. Ghiz-Flynn was caught in the moving propeller, the lawsuit said.
Her husband watched as people tried to save his wife’s life. She was pronounced dead by the time the boat returned to the marina, the complaint said.
The Coast Guard suspended McCabe from operating the boat as a passenger boat in early April 2020 after the passenger’s death, according to the indictment. McCabe then allegedly then submitted fraudulent applications to receive money from the federal Paycheck Protection Program that launched during the pandemic.
After filing the fraudulent applications, McCabe received two separate loans that were both later forgiven, one for more than $18,000 and one for more than $20,000, the indictment alleged.
Federal prosecutors said in the news release that Coast Guard Investigative Service special agents arrested McCabe. He is facing charges one count of seaman’s manslaughter, one count of making false statements and three counts of wire fraud.
If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison for the manslaughter charge, up to five years for the making false statements charge and up to 20 years for the charges of wire fraud, prosecutors said.
McCabe’s first appearance is scheduled for Sept. 12 in West Palm Beach.
