AEGEAN 600 Open for Entry

AEGEAN 600 Open for Entry

Lavrion, Greece - December 11, 2023 -   Organizers at the Hellenic Offshore Racing Club (HORC) are pleased to announce the 2024 edition of the AEGEAN 600 is now open for entry. The event is being held from 5-13 July 2024 and is co-organized by the host venue at Olympic Marine .

Now, in its fourth annual edition, the race has grown in interest and popularity every year, with last year’s third edition attracting 500 sailors racing on 45 yachts from 16 nations. What attracts them is this race’s unique format: a scenic offshore journey of 605 miles that starts and finishes under the watchful gaze of the Ancient Temple of Poseidon poised on the sea cliff above Attica’s Cape Sounio.

AEGEAN 600 Course Map

Besides this amazing and historic start and finish venue, the course itself is a spectacular tour that passes 13 iconic Greek islands , including a lap around the volcanic caldera of Santorini in the first part of the race and later towards the end of the race through a gap at the islands of Delos and Mykonos .

The ever-present northerly Meltemi winds that can peak to over 30 knots propel the fleet around this course, challenging their seamanship and navigation skills, yet delivering clear sunny skies, starry nights and warm waters throughout.

Maxi boats on the starting line

Seaworthy monohulls of minimum length of 9.00 m and seaworthy multihulls of length 9.15 m and larger are welcome to enter with ORC and/or IRC certificates.

Recognized offshore class yachts such as Dehler 30 One Designs, Class 40’s, Mini 6.5’s, Figaro 2’s and Figaro 3’s are also welcome to enter. The event will also welcome Maxi yachts as a race on the 2024 International Maxi Class (IMA’s) calendar of events.

Besides the race itself, the AEGEAN 600 welcomes all entries to a heaping dose of Greek hospitality at the full-service Olympic Marine  venue, with social events planned both before and after the race. The marina is a world-class facility featuring modern docks, a boatyard with full-service facilities for repairs and maintenance, chandleries and markets, and restaurants and cafes.

Aegean 600

The Aegean is one of the best places in the world to stage an offshore race – as the Aegean 600 has shown.

It’s not easy getting new offshore races organised, established and popularised in the racing community – particularly when they are held every year. Yet in only three editions since the first race was run in 2021, the Hellenic Offshore Racing Club (HORC) has done just that with the Aegean 600… prompting referral to this event as “the perfect 600- mile race.”

The race itself was conceived as a vision to attract the international racing community to what Greek offshore sailors already know: the islands and waters of the Aegean Sea are some of the best in the world for testing one’s offshore sailing skills. The conditions are idyllic: bright sun, cloudless skies and warm air and water make sunscreen and hats the most important equipment to pack.

Aegean 600

More than just an island tour HORC has had decades of experience organising popular annual events – like the annual Aegean Rally – that the Greek fleet has enjoyed throughout the years and given them intimate knowledge of the Aegean islands and the conditions of wind and sea throughout the region. This is the basis of their claim that the Aegean 600 is a race “designed by sailors for sailors.”

Accordingly, the racecourse they have designed is nothing less than stunning in every regard. The Aegean islands are legendary for their beauty, history and culture, and have been attracting sailors and visitors for countless generations. The Aegean 600 racecourse has thus been designed to take full advantage of this as a 605-mile anti-clockwise tour of these islands, using no less than 13 of them as official marks of the course.

Perhaps the most spectacular of these is in the first third of the race where, after leaving the Attican coast from the start off Cape Sunio and sailing past the islands at Milos (birthplace of Aphrodite and discovery of Venus de Milo), the fleet transits through the worldrenowned caldera of Santorini, where the whitewashed buildings of the island’s village lie perched hundreds of metres above the water in a spectacular natural amphitheatre.

The fleet has to enter this confined enclosed space from the northwest, transit around the eroded volcanic plug that lies in its middle, and exit out the south passage en-route to the next mark of the course, the island of Kassos.

This is just one of numerous navigational challenges that face the Aegean 600 fleet: the islands on the course that need to be rounded give challenges on how to find a balance between safety, shorter distance and avoiding the windless lees from the ever-present Meltemi. Navigators have to be at the top of their game.

The Meltemi: nature’s engine for the race Just as the ancient Greek sailors did for thousands of years, sailing the Aegean in summer is often characterised by discovering how to handle the prevailing north to northwest Meltemi winds.

Created by the confluence of high pressure conditions over the Greek mainland and a thermal low pressure over the Turkish mainland, the dry winds of the Meltemi are both welcomed for its cooling effect but also respected for its intensity, particularly in the southern regions of the race area at Kassos, Karpathos and Rhodos.

Here these winds can reach 30 or even 40kts in strength in the passages between the islands, with four to six-metre seas to accompany this strong breeze. These are the conditions the fleet encountered in the 2023 edition of the race, where headsail reaching from Kassos to Rhodos was a high-speed ride but one where helmsmen and crews had to demonstrate their seamanship and abilities to safely and prudently handle these serious conditions.

Yet, just as the Meltemi can provide respectful high speed fun and produce record-breaking conditions as it did in 2023, its absence can also cause frustration when navigators and strategists get challenged on how far to deviate off rhumb line to avoid the windless zones in the lee of the islands.

And in some years, when the Meltemi is not at its full strength, playing the lee shore is actually beneficial to find local thermals that rivals further out do not enjoy. Many race leads have been lost in these areas of the course, only to be regained when teams successfully shift gears from light air Code Zeros to reefed sails once more to get around the next headland – this is a very dynamic racecourse full of challenges.

Preparation is key To handle the challenges of the weather condition, all teams must be well prepared and ideally also well practiced to have a successful race experience. There are several ways the Aegean 600 race organisation provides assistance with this, in every respect suitable for a challenging offshore race.

First is the event’s base venue at Olympic Marine in Lavrios, where full-service, modern, world class facilities await visiting race entries. Free berthing is provided to race entries, and Olympic Marine boasts plenty of space both on their wide floating docks and in the adjacent boatyard for storage of each team’s supporting equipment and supplies.

At Olympic Marine there is outstanding personnel and support facilities for every imaginable repair and service that may be needed, from electrical systems, engines and plumbing to rigging, sails and hull and deck repairs. Parts and hardware are readily available in the chandleries and the market shop on site can meet most provisioning needs.

The marina’s cafes and restaurants also provide some shade from the Greek summer sun and a break from the hard work of preparation.

Another feature of the venue is the ample space for both the prerace meetings held in preparation for the race. This includes not only the skipper’s briefing common to all races but an authorised safety at sea seminar to ensure these skills are explained and discussed in detail to help entered teams meet their compliance with these important rules and standards.

Aegon 600 course map Olympic Marine is also the site for another important feature of the Aegean 600: the numerous social events where competitors and their families and friends may enjoy a taste of the Greek culture’s famous reputation for extending outstanding hospitality to all who visit.

Aegean 600

There are even tours organised to local historical attractions, such as the 3,000-year-old ancient Temple of Poseidon that presides over the start and finish of the race from atop the spectacular sea cliffs at Cape Sounio. This unique ancient structure has tremendous significance for all who participate as a symbolic link to the past to all those countless mariners over the ages who have taken to the sea, met its challenges and returned safely.

Yet another preparation feature of the Aegean 600 is the Attica Warm-Up Race held in Stenon Makronisou, the waters immediately adjacent to Olympic Marine. This short windward-leeward race held two days prior to the start of the main event assists not only the race entries in coordinating their team work, but helps the race committee in their preparations as well.

Aegean 600

New for 2024 The HORC organisers of the Aegean 600 are constantly improving and innovating the features of this race to meet the needs and expectations of the race’s growing fleet of participants. This includes the growing list of maxi entries since the addition of this race to the International Maxi Association’s (IMA) Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge circuit of events last year.

The Farr 100 Leopard 3 met this challenge in 2023 by setting a new course record of 45 hours five minutes and 25 seconds, an impressive mark to tempt others to come and have a go. For 2024 Olympic Marine has expanded to accommodate these large yachts with berthing space available for drafts up to eight metres in depth.

The Class40 class has also expressed a strong interest in participating for this next edition, being a race that is ideally suited for this style of offshore design and included the Aegean 600 in its Mediterranean Trophy racing circuit.

Berthing at Olympic Marine will be more centralised to create a congenial race village ambience, along with more pre-race social events included besides the opening and closing awards ceremonies. And in addition to the already extensive list of impressive awards offered, a new perpetual trophy has been created in honour of George Andreadis, a prominent HORC member, former Olympic athlete, offshore sailing champion, and a founding supporter of this race who passed in 2023.

Last year the fleet of IRC and ORC monohulls and multihulls grew by 25 per cent to include 45 yachts entered from 16 countries and over 500 sailors, and HORC expects similar growth for 2024. There are no better ambassadors for this growth than the participants themselves who span a wide variety of racer and cruiser/racer entries.

‘What an event,’ said Chris Sherlock, skipper of Leopard 3. ‘The hospitality was fantastic, the sailing was exceptional, and we look forward to coming back next year.’

‘I had imagined this to be a very good race with spectacular views,’ said IRC 3 and ORC 3 class winner and Olympic medallist Panagiotis Mantis from the Hanse 508 Pheadra, ‘But what I experienced was way beyond. I am thrilled and can’t wait for next year.’

Come and join the 2024 edition of the Aegean 600 and learn why this is the perfect 600-mile race and create your own legendary experience in Greek offshore sailing.

Chinese sailor Guo Chuan plans to set a record through the North East Passage – in a giant trimaran

  • Elaine Bunting

Chinese sailor Guo Chuan is planning to go through the North East Passage in the 97ft trimaran that Francis Joyon sailed round the world

Guo Chuan trimaran Qingdao

What’s the ideal yacht for attempting to set a record transiting the North East Passage?

You might think a steel yacht, or aluminium perhaps, something that resists crushing by ice, a sturdy craft equipped sensibly, if not beautifully, with a pilothouse or other shelter on deck.

You mightn’t think: the best yacht would be a round the world racing trimaran.

But Chinese sailor Guo Chuan did. He has just bought has bought Francis Joyon’s 97ft trimaran IDEC. Surprisingly, he didn’t buy it to better Joyon’s lone round the world record – or at least not for now – but to set a record, the first officially recognised speed record, for going through the North East Passage.

Guo Chuan and Francis Joyon

Guo Chuan and Francis Joyon

Guo Chuan, former Volvo Ocean Race crew and the first from his country to sail solo round the world, took over the Nigel Irens-designed trimaran in La Trinité sur Mer last month and will train with Joyon throughout April before renaming the yacht Qingdao.

The project follows nearly two years’ research on the feasibility of attempting the North East Passage from Murmansk to Providenya. The World Speed Sailing Record Council has agreed to adjudicate on the first attempt of this world record challenge, skippered by Guo Chuan with an international crew from the UK, France, Norway and Russia.

After attempting to set a North East Passage record, Guo plans to sail along the maritime silk road from China back to Europe. His team says: “Guo has no plan to sail round the world with this boat yet, but we do have plans for the next three years.”

But going through the North East Passage is not guaranteed in one year. The route can often be impeded by ice, with every possibility of having to spent two seasons making the long journey through the Bering Strait. The map below shows the remoteness and length of this most difficult ‘sea voyage’.

Who is Guo Chuan?

Guo, 50, is an aeronautical engineer who got the bug for sailing back in 2000 when he joined friends from the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club for a day on the water. In 2008 he was picked to be the media crewmember on the Irish-Chinese Volvo Ocean Race entry Green Dragon and in 2012/3 he set a record as the first Chinese person to sail solo round the world, sailing a Class 40.

North East Passage

North East Passage

The North East Passage

The passage from Novaya Zemlya or Franz Josef Land to the Bering Strait was first completed in 1878 by Swedish scientist Nils Adolf Nordenskjöld in the ship Vega.

The first modern yacht to do so was Apostle Andrew, skippered by Nicolai Litau from the Moscow Adventure Club in 1999, who sailed from Murmansk back to St Petersburg.

It is now commonly used by the people of Russia as the shortest water route between Russian ports in Europe and the Far East, and this passage offers a saving of 5,000 miles. It is, however, carefully guarded, and taking a Russian crew is often a precondition of gaining the necessary permissions.

Events schedule.

4-5 July - training

7-11 July - race

No comments, be the first one!

Can i participate in a regatta if i don’t have yachting experience.

Yes, of course. There will be an experienced skipper and team members on the yacht. They will give you a role and teach you everything you need to know to be a useful team member and feel comfortable.

Will I be able to steer a yacht?

Yes, all team members will definitely try themselves in different roles to better understand each other. Standing at the helm is an integral part of training for beginners as well as setting sails, and helping the team during moorings.

Where will I live during the regatta?

As a rule, participants in the regatta live on the yacht. The boat has everything you need for a comfortable stay: nice beds, a kitchen, a shower with toilet. If you do not want to live on a yacht, then you can arrange to stay at the hotel onshore.

What will we eat?

The crew decides altogether what kind of food they prefer to eat and makes necessary purchases. Simple dishes can be cooked, usually taking turns. Some regattas offer daily meals and intensive evening program for all crews.

Do you help with a visa?

We can make an invitation for a visa, but you need to apply for a visa by yourself.

Will I have seasick? What should I do if I have sickness?

Most people tolerate some seasickness easily. If you feel that you are starting to feel sick, it is best to get at the steering wheel or tune the sails. Get yourself busy, show your body that you don’t have time to get sick, you have to fight for victory in the race. There are also many quite effective medicines from sickness. If you start taking them in advance, then the probability of seasickness is almost zero.

How and where will I meet the crew and the captain?

Before each trip, we organize an online meeting where participants get to know each other and the captain. The captain will answer all your questions. The crew will have a group chat so you can get to know each other before the start of the regatta. Then you will meet in the marina.

What clothes do I need?

The main rule is to dress comfortably and according to the weather. Clothing: • windbreaker and pants or shorts; • shirt/jacket with UV protection (thermal underwear and fleece); • adjustable hat/cap; • gloves. We recommend to purchase a long-sleeved jacket with UV protection in order to protect yourself from the sun and strong wind. Yachting shoes should be: • light, with non-slip white outsole; • with the fixed heel; • with a tightly closed nose. During the sailing without shoes, you can fall or injure your fingers and feet on the deck. There are many protruding parts on the boat that are easy to catch. Unfortunately, even experienced sailors are not protected from unpleasant injuries when they ignore this simple rule.

Super Yacht Charters    -   Corporate Entertainment    -    Superior Race Views   -  Hospitality Boats

One of the very best ways to experience the excitement of the race, either privately or corporately, is by chartering a luxury yacht and viewing the race from the aft deck. The bookings are advised to be as early as possible to get the closest spots and the choice of the best charter yachts in Monaco .

Contact us to book your yacht. We will provide the latest superyachts which have a berth in the harbour (Port Hercule) and will be offering Grand Prix accommodation and entertainment packages. You can also browse a selection of Grand Prix  yachts here .

- Larger groups (of 10-200) and 'all inclusive' events on private yachts with exceptional views of Monaco for special functions and events.

Based locally in the South of France , CharterWorld can offer you the best charter yachts in the region, at the very best rates, to suit all styles and budgets.

There are several ways to enjoy the event. You can watch the races from the stands, or from one of the many roof terraces or hotel balconies along the track but, by far the most glamorous option is to charter a superyacht.

Different ways to charter a yacht during the Monaco Grand Prix:

- Renting a charter yacht right in the Monaco port provides the perfect venue for Grand Prix race watching and receptions, whether private or corporate. At CharterWorld we can help organize all your catering requirements, either with the yacht’s Chef, or in conjunction with outside caterers for larger receptions.

- A crewed boat charter to host a special event is a popular choice during the Grand Prix. There are many beautiful yachts ideally suited for cocktail receptions and parties, having vast deck space and all the technical expertise for on-board entertainment. Some yachts can host up to 200 guests in port, while a few also have special licenses for larger groups at sea (above the usual maximum of 12 guests). For parties, we can also put you in touch with local DJs and professional acts for all your entertainment needs.

- Chartering a yacht for luxury accommodation offers a novel and practical alternative to finding a hotel. Monaco hotels typically fill up every year as early as six months prior to the Grand Prix, and rates can be very high. Commuting in and out of Monaco is also very difficult at this time, unless you can access the port by sea.

More About Monaco Grand Prix Yachts:

Every year in May, Monaco’s streets transform into the world’s best known racetrack in the Formula 1 Grand Prix circuit. As well as being a top sporting event, it is also one of Europe's premier social highlights, with many of the world’s top corporations and celebrities visiting the Principality to join in the glamour and excitement of this exclusive event. Many of those who come to stay with their group can also entertain and witness the racing action and excitement by organising accommodation on a Monaco Grand Prix luxury yacht charter.

The Monaco Grand Prix has been held annually since 1929 in the Principality of Monaco. It is a Formula One race which is considered to be one of the most important and prestigious races around the world.

The race consists of the actual city streets of Monte Carlo and La Condamine, which are specially prepared in advance. The cars race down right past the moored super yachts in Monaco harbour. The narrow course is made up of several tight corners, elevation shifts making it the most dangerous and demanding track still used for Formula One motor racing. Although the course makes it difficult for cars to pass, the amazing history and incredible spectacle continue to be considered the jewel of the maximum race category.

"...entertain and witness the racing action and excitement by organising accommodation on a Monaco Grand Prix yacht charter..."

Since it began in 1929, the Monaco Grand Prix has been considered as one of the most important and prestigious automobile races in the world, alongside the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 hour Le Mans, collectively the Triple Crown of Motorsport.

The Monaco event spans four days, beginning with practice runs in May, followed by support races and qualifying rounds, culminating in the main event in May. The race consists of 78 laps of a 3.3km circuit, around the narrow, winding streets of Monte Carlo and La Condamine, and the famous Port Hercule where the boats are moored. It is undoubtedly one of the most exciting tracks in the world, with little room for driver error.

Calm Island With Some Greed

It would be nice to find some treasure., amazing race china 3: moscow, russia.

Even with Zika, filthy swimming pools and really fragile security, the Brazil Olympics has officially started, and I couldn’t care less, cause I don’t really watch the Olympics for leisure.

After a celebratory video from the teams, they are now headed to the host of 1980 Summer Olympics location, Moscow, Russia (but in technical terms, it would be U.S.S.R at that time).

So, have a vodka from the sword in the morning (which, would net me a penalty cause I will avoid drinking alcohol whenever I can, and what is the name of that tradition?), and head on!

Route Info: Will Work For Bread (Physical)

Carrying 20 heavy loads of flour to the shop, nasty even with the distance being so near. Having to put it neatly, is diabolical for people that are not physically inclined.

The sadist in me says that they should finish the entire bread that was given before they can even check in.

(Kinda pity that the show can’t use the Moscow railway as their only destination, it would be a great break from the lack of self driving for this season after Infiniti toss them for another Amazing Race knockoff).

Fast Forward: Circus Acts (Skills)

Actually both of the acts are kinda meh. The plate spinning is actually easier than the one in Amazing Race US Season 17, and the acrobatic stunt is kinda basic for a Fast Forward.

For me, I would add an Accordion playing and doing a balancing act to make it more tougher.

Still having a battle between Team Returnees & Team Siblings are kind of nice, cause the format of Fast Forward right now should be abolished.

Fast Forward winner: Team Siblings.

And for the rest of the leg, they full on copying the tasks from both Russian legs from Amazing Race US Season 21, but no caviar or learning who Anastasia is? Boo.

Synchronized Swimming (Physical + Skills)

Good news is that the task is definitely difficult and fun. Bad news is that it is more difficult that the other task and not many people are able to swim effectively to finish the challenge.

Trepak Dance (Skills)

4 episode in and we already have 3 fun and difficult dancing challenges (which will add up to 5 in the next leg, and one of them include flamenco dancing), guess Tokyo dances is seen as boring for the producers, and with Team Returnees using the Express Pass, next.

Roadblock: Russian Time Zone Exam (Mental)

Fans of Amazing Race know what this challenge is, and sadly to say, the examiner here is too bland.

First Place: Team Siblings

Penalized: Team Actors for taking some kind of illegal transportation (which is like, huh?) & Team SHN48 for violating traffic rules (which is understandable, cause they are idols, and in the idol world, they want them to be as pure as possible). Both teams took 30 minute penalties, which I have to say, is extremely harsh, do you think that these are the reasons why the teams right now are scared of taking the penalty?

Still, eliminated for passing through the red light would be a moment by itself.

Non-Eliminated: Team Dancers, again.

Strangely, I felt that leg is too short, but that just me.

Lorem Ipsum  is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry.

Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book.

It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.

It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing

Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old.

Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance.

The first line of Lorem Ipsum, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..", comes from a line in section 1.10.32.

Could Trump’s AI-generated Taylor Swift endorsement be illegal?

Taylor Swift performs onstage during the 2018 American Music Awards at Microsoft Theater on October 9, 2018 in Los Angeles, California.

On Sunday, former President Donald Trump posted a collection of memes on Truth Social — the platform owned by his media company — that make it seem like Taylor Swift and her fans are coming out in support of his candidacy. But as new legislation takes effect, these images could have deeper implications about the use of AI-generated images in political campaigns, especially when those images misrepresent a celebrity’s likeness.

“One of the things I’m seeing a lot of in my practice right now is the rise of AI impersonators across the board for endorsements,” Noah Downs, an IP and entertainment lawyer, told TechCrunch, with the condition that his comments are not legal advice. These fake AI endorsements have become so widespread that even “Shark Tank” had to publish a PSA to warn fans about the prevalence of scams that impersonate the show’s investors.

In one of the images Trump posted, hordes of young women wear matching “Swifties for Trump” t-shirts. While there is indeed political diversity among the large population of Swift fans, these images appear to be AI-generated — in fact, these particular images come from a satirical post on X.

Another meme that Trump posted is a screenshot from X that depicts Taylor Swift as Uncle Sam, declaring, “Taylor wants you to vote for Donald Trump.”

aegean 600 yacht race

Though the pop icon has not yet commented on the 2024 U.S. presidential election, she came out in support of the Biden-Harris campaign in 2020 and publicly disparaged Trump at the time. Some fans speculated that Swift had subtly endorsed Harris in an Instagram post this month, though this was not the case .

As one of the most dominant figures in pop culture, Swift has been subject to her fair share of deepfakes . When non-consensual, explicit AI images depicting Swift went viral on X this year, some lawmakers responded by introducing new bills aiming to protect against deepfakes . Even White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre called on Congress to do something.

Eight months later, the landscape of legal protections against misleading synthetic media already looks different. In Tennessee, where Swift’s corporate representation is based, Governor Bill Lee in March signed the trailblazing ELVIS Act into law, which carves out explicit protections for artists against unauthorized AI imitations of their work.

“This legislation was passed with bipartisan support, because everyone appears to recognize the problems that AI and misuse of AI tools can present to the public,” Downs said.

But since the ELVIS Act is so new, there isn’t precedent for how it could be used to protect artists. Much of the legislation’s language focuses specifically on AI-generated audio that can mimic an artist’s voice, like the viral Drake song that turned out to be fake.

“I do think that this is going to be a long-term issue that the ELVIS Act is very prescient in taking care of, but we need to have more robust national legislation about it,” Downs said. The only reason why the ELVIS Act may even potentially be at play is because of Swift’s connections to the state, where she has business and real estate holdings.

Avi D. Kelin, a partner at PEM Law focusing on political law, is not optimistic that the ELVIS Act could apply, since the law appears more concerned with audio-based impersonation than imagery. Instead, he wonders if this could become a federal election integrity concern in the future.

“The larger question is whether the Federal Election Commission, which has jurisdiction over political communications, will get involved,” Kelin told TechCrunch. But he said that the FEC doesn’t seem likely to roll out new guidelines on AI-generated political communications this election cycle.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC), however, announced it is moving forward with plans to enact new AI transparency requirements on TV and radio advertisements. But that doesn’t apply to social media posts by politicians running for government office, and social media remains a key component of campaign communications. Meanwhile, research from the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), a British nonprofit focused on online extremism, showed that the volume of AI-generated disinformation increased an average of 130% per month on X over the last year.

These disingenuous endorsements matter so much because Swift’s support is perhaps the most coveted celebrity backing a politician can get. Her cultural influence is so vast that her support of a candidate could tip the scales in a tight race — according to Morning Consult , more than half of adults in the U.S. consider themselves fans of Taylor Swift, while 16% identify as avid fans. Those numbers are staggering given the context that only about two-thirds of eligible Americans cast their vote in the 2020 election.

“The [ELVIS Act] is brand new, and the exact parameters will need to be developed by the courts,” said Kelin. “This would certainly be an interesting test case!”
