Going ashore can be a wet affair. Yachting Monthly went in search of rucksacks built to carry your essentials and keep them dry

best-dry-bags-group-test

A dependable rucksack that’s comfortable, big enough to hold the essentials and waterproof enough to keep them dry is invaluable for anyone cruising, so we put several to the test to bring you our guide to best dry bags in the market.

Sailing is a wonderful activity to access parts of the world others find difficult to reach. However, the ride ashore in the tender, can be an adventure in itself, and sometimes a very soggy one.

Dinghies leak, wind can pick up while ashore and invariably, in the scrabble to get in the dinghy, a bag will get placed on the floor and will be soaking wet by the end of the trip.

It may be cheap but this bag is waterproof and solid all round

Decathlon Itiwit 20L waterproof backpack

Best budget dry bag on test

Reasons to buy:  A great bag for the price, Very positive watertight seal

Reasons to avoid:  Quite basic, Design feels a little cheap

This rucksack from French company Decathlon is easily the cheapest on test. Initially, the design struck us as feeling a little cheap, which of course it is. However, the bag’s folding mechanism was easily the most reassuring we tested, giving a very positive seal and neat closure.

Big enough to take the basics ashore, its padded straps are more suitable for lighter loads. The most surprising thing? It was the only bag to survive our rigorous test completely dry inside.

Specifications • Size: 20 litres • External pockets: No • Internal pockets: Yes • YM waterproof rating: 10/10

waterproof-backpack-group-test-overboard

The bag is light and has an air-flow back panel and two-way sealing system

Overboard Pro-Light Waterproof Backpack 30L

Reasons to buy: Great for use on the water and ashore – a real multipurpose pack,

Reasons to avoid: Lightweight built may affect longevity

Unlike most on test, the Pro-Light sports several non-waterproof outer pockets, making it a practical everyday rucksack. The electronically welded construction is on the light side, keeping the bag weight down, but we thought it might not last as long as others.

The back is well-padded and the rucksack has both chest and waist straps, though both on the light side. It has reflective strips on the shoulder straps, and an air-flow back panel. It can be sealed at the back or the side.

Specifications • Size: 30 litres • External pockets: Yes • Internal pockets: Yes • YM waterproof rating: 9/10

All the pockets are external, including space for a water bottle

Aquapac 28L Heavyweight Waterproof Backpack

Reasons to buy: Stands up on its own for easy loading, Carry handle makes it easy to pass on or off a boat

Reasons to avoid:  Not much padding on the back or straps, No internal pockets

British brand Aquapac’s Toccoa stands up on its own due to a shaped base, a simple feature that made it easier to fill, while a carry handle on the top helped for passing it aboard.

There are no internal pockets, but the outside of the bag has water bottle pockets and the roll-top closure keeps the pack neat. Padding on the back and straps is limited, so not so well suited for heavier loads.

The highly adjustable strap system is ideal for heavy loads

Ortlieb Gear 40L Pack

Reasons to buy: Great for heavier loads, Comes with detachable water bottle

Reasons to avoid:  It isn’t cheap, A touch over engineered for day-to-day use

Industrial design and construction are the chief appeal of this heavyweight rucksack from German outdoor brand Ortlieb. We can see it lasting a very long time, though the seal didn’t work as well as we expected and it isn’t cheap.

A highly adjustable back system incorporates a well-padded waist strap, making it ideal for carrying heavier loads. It also has a detachable water bottle

Specifications • Size: 40 litres • External pockets: Yes • Internal pockets: No • YM waterproof rating: 7/10

The neoprene pocket on the outside of the Zhik dry bag can hold a 1-litre bottle

Zhik Dry Backpack 35L

Best dry bag on test

Reasons to buy: Well padded back, Thick base makes it hard wearing

Reasons to avoid: On the pricier side for its size

The Zhik proved a great balance of solid construction, functional design and low weight. Made to last, it uses thicker waterproof plastic for the base and has a well-padded back.

Internal storage is separated with an iPad pocket, while a zipped external pocket is ideal for keys or other essentials that don’t need to be kept dry.

Two neoprene pockets on the outside were big enough for a 1-litre water bottle. We liked the bag’s design, including the reflective details that ensure it is visible in the dark.

Specifications • Size: 35 litres • External pockets: Yes • Internal pockets: Yes • YM waterproof rating: 8/10

best-dry-bags-group-test-gill-race

The adjustable cord lets you tuck a jumper or lifejacket to the outside

Gill Race Team Backpack 35L

Reasons to buy:

– Internal pockets make separating luggage easy – Comfortable shoulder straps

Reasons to avoid:

– Although it did keep water out, the seal was not the best on test – No chest strap

The Gill Race Team backpack was a good balance of size and comfort, big enough to carry a moderate shopping load. Internal pockets mean the inside of the waterproof compartment is separated. There is no waist or chest strap, but the two straps are adequately padded and ergonomically shaped.

The fold-over design and side buckles keeps the closure out of the way, unlike some designs. The seal wasn’t the best on test.

Specifications • Size: 35 litres • External pockets: Yes • Internal pockets: Yes • YM waterproof rating: 6/10

The bag is compact and has a handy front mesh pocket

Henri Lloyd 25L dri pac rucksack

Reasons to buy: Not too bulky, Robust build should ensure longevity

Reasons to avoid: Very small internal volume, Outer pocket is all but useless

Henri Lloyd’s latest dry rucksack design is one of the smallest we tested and has a simple design aimed at those wanting to take the essentials ashore. There are no internal pockets and the small mesh pocket on the outside has no zip, rendering it not very useful.

A tough PVC fabric means this bag should stand the test of time while it’s low profile means it will also pack away into a locker easily as it is not very bulky.

Specifications • Size: 25 litres • External pockets: Yes • Internal pockets: No • YM waterproof rating: 7/10

Which were the best dry bags?

What quickly became clear with this test is that dry bag rucksacks are a compromise. They must be highly water resistant while also functioning well as an everyday rucksack. Getting this right is a challenge for each of the bag’s designers.

As a long-term investment that will last many years and many runs ashore, we were very impressed by the truly industrial construction of the Ortlieb . Its highly adjustable and well-padded back system makes it perfect for hauling heavy loads to and from your boat.

best-dry-bags-group-test-how-we-tested

An excellent balance of form and function was delivered by the Zhik , some smart design features combined with quality construction make this the choice for someone that’s going to use a dry bag ashore as well.

However, while lacking the heavier feel of its brand name rivals, the Decathlon Itiwit proved itself the most waterproof on test. This, coupled with its low price, means it is excellent value for money.

It is certainly worth considering if you want to keep expensive electronics safe. In bright orange, you won’t miss it in a crowded anchorage!

What to look for in a good dry bag

But how waterproof does such a piece of kit need to be? Opinion varied between members of the YM team but we all agreed that were you to carry a phone or camera ashore in what was said to be a dry bag and fall in with it or drop it into a wet dinghy, you would be far from pleased to find its contents wet or water damaged.

Trips ashore often entail a degree of exploration and usually involved a bit of a walk, so the dry bag must be comfy to carry on your back. It also needs the ability to hold a reasonably heavy load, such as bring provisions back from the shop.

The design of waterproof rucksacks tends to be simple but there were still an array of different features on each dry bag. For example, external pockets are handy for water bottles, and internal pockets good for small items like your phone and keys.

Above all, we paid attention to quality of manufacture, looking for something that could be kept on board for years to come and provide solid reliable service.

The best dry bags should be able to stand up to a proper soaking

How we tested the best dry bags

As each manufacturer made different promises regarding water resistance of its dry bags, we felt it was important to test thoroughly what the bags could be subjected to beyond what it and its contents would be regularly exposed to. This is because waterproof rucksacks compromise heavily on features when compared to their non-waterproof counterparts.

We chose sizes of 20L-40L as a good size for a day ashore. The fabric of all of the dry bags could handle spray, being hit by waves or general sloshing in a tender, so to help distinguish the best, we submerged each rucksack with a piece of dry cardboard inside, as if you had fallen in to see how they coped, even if this is well beyond what they are designed for.

Each dry bag was used on a daily basis by the YM team, on and off the water, to test comfort, design and quality. The team looked carefully at all of the individual features.

The 13 Best Sailing Bags 2024: Waterproof And Rugged Bags For Sailboats

Looking for the best sailing bags.

Waterproof sailing bags are an essential item for life out on the water. Before we moved aboard our 38ft sailboat I didn’t realise quite how much I would use one (or many!) while living on a sailboat.

Sure, I assumed I’d use a bag for trips to shore when carrying items that couldn’t get wet, but I had no idea how often I would use it as an essential piece of equipment actually on the sailboat.

If you’re looking for the best bag for your next sailing adventure then you’ve come to the right place. We’ve reviewed the top waterproof and rugged bags designed especially for sailing, to help you make the right decision for your needs.

Waterproof Sailing Bags For Sailing

🏆 Our top pick – Helly Hansen Ocean Dry Bag 🏆

If you’re using your waterproof bag while you’re out sailing then you’ll want it to be big enough to hold essential items but small enough to fit comfortably in the cockpit.

We’d also recommend getting one in a bright colour and having in mind some way of attaching it to something on deck so it can’t fall overboard.

yachting bags

#1 Tortuga Day Bag

The Tortuga range of bags is something travelers of all descriptions lust over. These bags come at a price, but the quality is second to none and they should last forever.

We’ve put this bag straight to the top of the pile as it’s perfect for the cockpit and as an adventure on-shore bag because it’s comfortable to wear and looks great.

This day bag is waterproof and lightweight. It’s made from sail material so it’s super durable too. You can use it for anything (and you’ll want to too!

Top Features

✔ Lightweight ✔ Rugged ✔ Comfortable

#2 Helly Hansen Ocean Dry Bag

This is Helly Hansen’s most rugged dry bag and the perfect bag for ocean sailing.

It’s made from super durable, waterproof materials and can withstand a good dunking (though we guess this hasn’t been properly tested as they say it’s not waterproof when fully submerged!)

It has a removable shoulder strap which makes it easier to carry for long distances if you need to. The only slightly annoying thing about this dry bag is that it opens from the top, so it’s hard to find things at the bottom.

✔ Durable ✔ Rugged ✔ Comfortable

#3 Earth Pak

Earth Pak are top sellers when it comes to dry bags. They come in a range of colours and sizes, and they’re 100% waterproof and rugged too.

The great thing about this design of a dry bag is that it will float because it’s full of air. So you don’t need to worry as much about it going for a swim!

They come with a shoulder strap, which we don’t love for everyday use, but they are the perfect bag to have on board and stow in the cockpit or use as a grab bag (we attach the strap to the binnacle so it can’t go anywhere!

If you’re using them for this then get one in a bright colour so they’re easy to find in a hurry.

✔ Floats ✔ Rugged ✔ Bright

#4 Skog Å Kust DrySåk

If you’re after something a little more fun then these are a great choice . They come in a range of cool designs and, for a cheaper dry bag, they have some thoughtful features too.

This is a rugged and waterproof bag designed to be used outdoors. It has an outer zip pocket for quick access to things like your mobile phone which is really handy.

It also has a reflective trim which is great for night sails! It comes in a range of sizes too, so you can decide what’s right for your needs.

✔ Unique and fun ✔ Reflective trim ✔ Handy zipper pocket

#5 Ronstan Waterproof Sailing Backpack

The bright red  Ronstan Dry Sailing Bag  features leak-proof welded seams and includes sturdy side carrying handles and removable backpack straps.

This is a great option for a sailing backpack to store in the cockpit because it’s bright red, meaning it will be easy to get your hands on, and easy to locate if it takes a little dip!

It’s pretty big though, so you might want something smaller depending on the size of your boat!

✔ Useful straps ✔ Brightly coloured ✔ Rugged

#6 Gill Waterproof Sailing Bag

Gill has a great reputation amongst sailors (we love their sailing jackets ). You can’t really go wrong with the quality of these bags, and they come in three different sizes to suit your needs.

Personally, we wouldn’t choose the bright orange colour for trips ashore but it’s perfect for use as a grab bag or for storing things in the cockpit, as it’s easy to see if it goes overboard by accident.

✔ High quality ✔ Brightly coloured ✔ Rugged

Dry Bags For Adventures

the view of an island in greece on an onshore adventure with a waterproof sailing bag

Dry bags don’t have to look like dry bags anymore!

We love the fact you can now buy waterproof sailing backpacks that look like normal rucksacks – they’re perfect for trips to shore where you don’t necessarily want to be lugging around a bright red shiny duffle bag.

Your cockpit bag can probably double up as a day bag for shore, but if you live on board or sail regularly then it’s much easier to have a bag that all your sailing stuff just lives in so you can grab and go.

#7 Outlander Bag

Outlander bags are our top pick for budget-friendly adventure day bags.

The Outlander Backpack is made from highly rip and waterproof nylon fabric that provides strength and long-lasting performance with minimal weight, making it a great option for trekking or hiking.

We do find the zips a little annoying, as they’re a breakpoint that isn’t really necessary in a dry bag (but at this price who cares right!?)

One of the great things about these bags is that they can literally fold down into your pocket, so they’re perfect for things like grocery runs – fitting into a larger bag so that you have two when you get to the checkout.

They also have a load of pockets including a safety pocket which is great for travel. These are our favourite budget option as they’re cheap enough to have a few on board just in case.

Key Features

✔ Super rugged ✔ Lightweight ✔ Budget

#8 Mier Waterproof Dry Bag

The Mier dry bag is a great option for a sailing day bag. They have a roll-top closure so you don’t have to worry about metal zips and salt water and they’re 100% waterproof.

They have a compartment for a laptop or tablet which is really handy if you work from the shore. They also have several outer pockets which we find perfect for a water bottle. You can even carry extra things in the bungee cords on the front making this bag bigger than it seems.

This is one of the more comfortable waterproof bags for sailing we’ve reviewed here, with padded straps and the option to hand carry with the fold-down rubber strap at the top.

We also love the look of this waterproof rucksack – there’s a lot to love!

✔ No fastenings to worry about ✔ Laptop compartment ✔ Comfortable

#9 Geckobrands

Geckobrands have a nice backpack for sailing day adventures on shore. It’s super lightweight but still pretty tough, and it’s waterproof of course! It has a water-resistant pocket to store smaller items, and 2 D rings to attach things like water bottles if you need.

The straps aren’t as comfortable as other bags on this list but we like the way it looks, and it’s useful that it’s so lightweight!

✔ Water-resistant pocket for small items ✔ Lightweight ✔ D rings for extra storage

#10 Waterproof Bags For Smaller Items

a girl with a small waterproof sailing bag in her pocket looking at her sailboat

There’s always something that you want to protect from the sea and rain that’s a little smaller – usually your mobile phone.

  • Waterproof bag for your phone

Having lost a mobile phone to the damp of the sailboat I thoroughly recommend regularly storing your phone in a waterproof case. They’re very cheap and they work brilliantly, so it’s a win-win really.

They’re also really handy if you want to swim to shore or you can even take photos in the sea (though the quality doesn’t come out great through the plastic!) There are a million different ones to choose from and I’m sure most work great, but we love this one .

  • Waterproof box

The other option you have which is especially useful for electronics is a waterproof box . We’d recommend having a few of these onboard for longer-term storage of things like hard drives and memory cards.

  • Cheap waterproof bags for small things

You should also consider getting some smaller, cheaper waterproof bags for other random things like items from a medical kit (the clear ones are great for this as you can write on them in permanent marker and see the contents too).

  • Lightweight waterproof bags

You can fill these with air before you roll them up – great for carrying things like keys and shoes to shore when you want to swim there and head off on a short hike.

I managed to stuff in a summer dress, my phone, keys, and wallet, then I swam to shore with my flip flops on my hands, dried off on the beach, and had a lovely day exploring the town!

Luggage Bags For Sailing

a sailboat in crystal clear water

Larger waterproof bags for sailing are perfect for getting luggage on and off a sailboat. They’re also really handy as grab bags if you have a larger sailboat. They have to be able to store easily, and be easily moved on and off the boat.

#11 Peak Design Duffel

yachting bags

We are massive fans of Peak Design and especially their duffel bag . It’s the perfect luggage bag for sailing and feels as though it’s been designed for life on the water.

We’ll get stuck straight into the features that make this bag so well suited to sailing. Firstly, the weatherproof nylon canvas shell does a great job of keeping the splashes out. It might not be fully waterproof like some of the bags on this list but unless you’re going swimming with it, it’s going to do the job. It’s 100% recycled nylon too so no feeling guilty about the environment.

The bottom liner is waterproof, so it will be fine on leaky dinghy floors. But what we really love is the weatherproof ultrazip which is probably the most rugged zip we’ve ever come across. It won’t fail in days due to the saltwater, and it’s super rugged. It’s possibly the best feature of the bag (though that’s a tough one to decide when it has so many great features!)

The duffel comes in two sizes, 35l or 65l, so you can pick your poison depending on how long your trip is. The 35l is a great size for a weekend away or a week or two if you pack light. It folds small so will fit easily in little cabins, and it’s easy to carry too.

We also love the look of these bags. Perfect for sailing or a city break. A brilliant all-rounder.

Tortuga Outbreaker Bag For Sailing

This isn’t a dedicated bag for sailing adventures but it’s perfect for sailors and any crew they might have onboard.

It’s a waterproof backpack that opens like a suitcase, so it’s easy to stow away but you can also use it like a drawer if there’s no space in your cabin to unpack. You just flip it open and grab what you need.

These bags are made from sail cloth material so they’re super strong and durable. You’ll have no worries shoving this at the bottom of the dinghy on your way to the boat!

Plus they have some other great features like a padded laptop holder and lockable zippers, meaning they’ll happily double up as travel bags too.

They’re a great choice of bag for sailing and travel alike.

✔ Opens flat ✔ Durable sail cloth material ✔ Padded laptop holder

#12 Helly Hansen Dry Bag

The Helly Hansen waterproof sailing bag has been designed with sailors in mind and is perfect for days out at sea. It’s a great size for packing for a week sailing holiday or for a weekend on board but it’s also a useful bag to have on board for storage and land trips as it can fold down pretty flat.

It has adjustable back straps and grab handles on the side to make it easy to get on and off the boat and it has a useful outer pocket too. This is a very well-designed bag.

✔ Adjustable back straps ✔ Perfect size ✔ Rugged design

#13 Columbia 60l Bag

The Columbia waterproof sailing bag is a truly rugged waterproof bag with a water-resistant zipper and reinforced seams. It has multiple haul handles and lash-down points and removable padded shoulder straps that convert into a single haul handle.

One of the really great features of this waterproof bag is that it packs into a removable interior accessory pocket for easy storage on board.

✔ Reinforced seams ✔ Removable shoulder straps ✔ Easy storage on board

What Is A Bag Designed For Sailing?

the best waterproof sailing bags

A bag for sailing is exactly what it sounds like. Any bag suitable for days out sailing – something practical, waterproof, and lightweight that you can protect your belongings in when sailing.

What you use it for exactly will be pretty personal, but here are a few things we use a bag for onboard Hot Chocolate.

Before we head off sailing I always grab our designated bag to keep up in the cockpit. It’s specifically for sailing days and I store in there things like binoculars, a horn, sun cream, water, and snacks.

Basically anything I think I might need if the weather gets rough and I don’t want to keep heading down below. It’s been amazing to have to hand in a number of situations.

I also have a sailing bag for day trips to the shore, to take in the dinghy. I learned quickly never to jump in the dinghy with anything less than a waterproof bag when the weather turned choppy and all my electronics got soaked on one of our first dinghy rides back!

If you’re working from the sailboat (and also local cafes and co-working spaces), then you’re going to need a decent waterproof backpack for digital nomads that has protection for your laptop and other key features.

sailing dry bag on a sailboat

The other things we use a waterproof bag for are our grab bag should we ever have to abandon ship, and our medical kit so that things like plasters and bandages don’t suffer from dampness.

We’ve even needed a waterproof bag to run a phone up the mast for an internet signal on a rainy workday!

Waterproof bags really are an essential item to have on a sailboat, and we’ve narrowed down the best out there to make like a little easier for you!

How To Choose The Best Bag For Your Sailing Trip

Our top tips on choosing the best bag for your next sailing adventure.

You want your sailing bag to make from a material that’s super durable, especially if you’re using it for something like your grab bag. It’s no good having a bag that gets a rip in it after a few months and becomes un-waterproof.

Look for decent quality brands, like the ones listed above, that have a great reputation for producing quality sailing products made from durable material and put together well. Your bag should last you many years to come.

The waterproof bags on this list are all waterproof for a reason. Sailing is pretty well-known for being a wet sport (you are surrounded by water after all!) You need a bag that can stand up to getting frequently splashed and even submerged if you plan on swimming to shore a lot.

If you’re using your bag while you’re out sailing then you’ll want it to be big enough to hold essential items but small enough to fit comfortably in the cockpit.

If it’s a luggage bag then it will need to be big enough to hold all your clothes and equipment while on passage. Make sure you research how much space you’ll need before you buy one that’s not suitable for your needs.

Other Features

Dry bags come with all sorts of extra features that you might find important (or not!) Things like extra pockets for things you want to reach easily, extra straps, reflective strips, or inside pockets can make all the difference.

Best Sailing Duffle Bags: Top Picks For Boat Travel

Best Sailing Duffle Bags: Top Picks For Boat Travel | Life of Sailing

‍ Key Takeaways

  • Sailing bags will vary in price, size, and features that will accommodate your sailing goals
  • Most sailing duffel bags have shoulder straps and are waterproof to some extent
  • A lot of these options can be used as one bag for everything you need outdoors
  • Consider your sailing goals prior to purchase to help narrow down size and price

‍ The best sailing duffle bag will vary based on your individual needs and preferences. But what sailing bags are the best?

The Lomo 30L, Helly Hansen 50L, and Typhoon 60L are good starts for duffel bags that you can take while sailing. Some of these have removable shoulder straps or are touted as waterproof bags that should offer a reliable dry bag for your trip and be comfortable to carry.

In my experience, the best duffel bags have durable construction, are completely waterproof, and have either removable padded shoulder straps or removable backpack straps to make it convenient to carry. The duffel bag that you consider must meet your specific sailing goals.

Table of contents

‍ Top 13 Best Sailing Duffel Bags

The best sailing bag should cover a lot of bases in terms of its usefulness at sea, meaning it has to at least be waterproof. Having a waterproof sailing bag seems like a no-brainer, especially with ocean spray or inclement weather.

You also want a lightweight duffel that might potentially have a zippered pocket to help keep your goods in. In addition, shoulder straps or compression straps can make carrying a little easier when transporting.

Lomo Waterproof Bag 30L

Lomo Waterproof Bag 30L

The Lomo 30L waterproof dry bag offers a good value for the price and quality of the product you receive. It showcases welded seams and a closable wide mouth that allows you to fill with all your gear but keep it dry from the elements.

It may seem a little stiff when in colder elements due to the material used for waterproofing. IT also comes with one removable shoulder strap to help with carrying around.

  • Good value for the price
  • Solid waterproofing
  • Thick material becomes stiff in colder weather

Helly Hansen Sailing Bag 50L

Helly Hansen Sailing Bag 50L

The Helly Hansen offshore 50L bag is a good option for the best sailing bags on the market. These claim to also be capable of strapping to a cartop and remain waterproof, but you will likely need to test that out for yourself.

When sailing, they can withstand a ton of water thrown at it but do not fully submerge. The welded seams are great but will take on water if left for longer periods of time.

  • Plenty of room for storage inside
  • Easy to carry and store gear
  • Not fully submersible

Typhoon Dry Duffel 60L

Typhoon Dry Duffel 60L

The Typhoon 60L , referred to as the Osea Dry Duffel, is 100 percent waterproof due to the 500D tarp material that they used to construct it. The removable shoulder straps allow it to be used as a backpack or carry around hand.

The durable material is great but you will not see a lot of external pockets. However, you can save a lot of space when storing since you can close the bag and squeeze air out of it with the release from a valve.

  • 100 percent waterproof
  • Large bag to hold many gear or other items
  • Is not eye catching

Red Original Sailing Kit Bag

Red Original Sailing Kit Bag

The Red Original Kit Bag comes in various sizes to meet your storage needs. The waterproof capability is tested with welded seams and a waterproof zip rather than a roll top closure.

It features various straps to carry depending on the size you are considering. It remains as a bag suitable for those seeking a valuable option that does not break the bank.

  • Lighter and more compact options
  • Made with recycled materials
  • Waterproof zip might not be as appealing as the roll top closure

Lomo Dry Bag 60L

Lomo Dry Bag 60L

Lomo continues to offer appealing options for your sailing goals, such as their Dry Bag 60L offering. They do a great job at keeping your gear dry, with welded seams and a roll top closure that can be submerged for a short period of time.

While there are not any external pockets, you trade that in for a reliable waterproof bag for the event you are going to experience a wet ride or have to store your bag in a place where water is constantly hitting it. The bag might be a little stiff in colder weather, as the material stiffens when cold.

  • Great waterproof bag for your budget
  • Bright color for easy spotting
  • No external pockets

Helly Hansen Sailing Bag 90L

Helly Hansen Sailing Bag

The Helly Hansen 90L offers users versatility with different strap features to wear as a backpack or carry by hand. It is not fully waterproof since the seams are not welded, but still serves as a quality bag to fit all of your essentials.

While it has a lot of room to pack everything, keep in mind the weight. Your back will thank you later if you manage to keep things light.

  • Plenty of storage space with external pockets
  • Sleek design and easy to carry
  • Might become quite heavy and not waterproof

Zhik 45L Submersible

Zhik 45L Submersible

This Zhik 45L waterproof bag offers one of the best dry bags on the market. It is sporty and can handle a large amount of your gear to be safe from water.

It even has a section in the bag to separate wet and dry gear to keep them from all touching one another. It is built for longevity and is rugged to withstand harsh conditions at sea.

  • Can handle all elements and can survive being submerged
  • Might be too heavy for the larger bag option

How to Find the Best Sailing Bags

The best sailing bags will vary based on your sailing goals and what you plan to do on the trip. There are many questions to consider before purchasing the best sailing bag for you and it will play a role in how you use them.

Are you sailing for the weekend or longer? Do you need safety gear or other items for harsh conditions? Is this just a one day event and you need dry clothes?

All of those questions will lead to different bag types needed, as you do not need a heavy duty 130L dry bag for just one day of racing. Below you can see which bag might be best for you depending on your needs.

Waterproof Bags

A waterproof sailing bag is ideal when you are going to be stuck in the elements, have nowhere to place your bag except in direct water exposure, and is best for long periods of time near the water. It makes sense that if you are traveling on a body of water to have a bag that is going to resist getting wet.

Water resistant is the bare minimum, but having a waterproof bag is best. If your sailing goal is to go offshore for a few days, you may want waterproof bags, whereas one trip near the coast on a nice day might just need a water resistant bag.

In addition to waterproofing, you need to consider what sized bag you will need to handle your gear. Weekend trips will likely need a medium sized bag, while day sailing can require a smaller one.

If you are planning a trip that will last a week or longer, you may want to bring a 130L or several smaller ones to accommodate your traveling needs. This also makes sense if you are needing to pack extra gear for bad weather or need to pack safety essentials.

The price of each bag is going to vary widely depending on brand, materials, and their intended use. This is why it is important to narrow down your sailing goals to see which bag fits your daily activities.

Some bags hover near $60, while others can be over $400. The size of the bags usually make the most difference in price since more materials are used, but others in similar size might cost significantly more if one is waterproof and the other is not.

When you sail a boat of any kind, you understand the importance of a good sailing bag to hold all your belongings. You may be heading to the changerooms, relaxing in the club after a long day of sailing, or storing your sailing gear below deck while on the water. Protection for your valuables like your watch , wallet, smartphone, spare clothes, and perhaps even your laptop becomes crucial.

Sailing bags are important to keep your gear secure and dry. Nowadays, there are some fantastic sailing bags available, including duffel bags, dry bags, backpacks, pouches, and accessory bags.

In this article, we’ll break down each of these categories and review the top selections for the best sailing bags currently available.

Main Types Of Sailing Bags

Sailcloth bags.

My personal sailing kit bag is a sailcloth duffel bag. I bought a sailing jacket and pants years ago from a local sailmaker, and he shipped it to me in a bag made from old sails – well it wasn’t actually “old” sailcloth , I assume it was offcuts of new sailcloth from sails that he just made or repaired.

sailing sailcloth bag

I thought “ What a great idea! This is one of the best sailing bags I’ve seen… simple but effective. ”

Rather than throwing offcuts of the sailcloth into the trash, he stitched up these bags made from sails and offered them to local sailors. It’s a win for him, in that it cuts down on waste he has to get rid of, and it’s free advertising for him (he puts his logos on the bags and straps). After a day’s sailing, quite often you don’t take your sails back up into the club, but you almost always take your bag with you, so it’s advertising for him wherever you go.

They probably don’t take too long to make – they’re stitching 100’s of yards of sails every day, so a bag would be pretty quick and easy. He might have even got his apprentice to do it.

The bags are made out of sailcloth, so they are super strong. It also has long straps which makes it easy to carry. Mine has a really sturdy zipper and heavy-duty stitching as well, and the whole bag just feels like it will last a long time.

sailing bags made from sails

A few downsides – it’s not a waterproof sailing bag, and it doesn’t have any compartments, but for me, it’s not a massive deal. Having these features would be good sometimes though.

When I go sailing on yachts, I’m a bit paranoid about water getting into my car remote, phone, and wallet. Bags often end up all over the place when sailing in yachts – there’s often water in the bottom of the boat and you can get it coming in from rain, waves, or sail changes, so I just slip all of these important water-sensitive items into a zip-lock freezer bag and so far, it’s worked fine for me.

Why Choosing The Right Sailing Bag Is Important

I’ve been sailing for well over 10 years, and I’ve been storing my gear in a sailing bag for just as long. When I started sailing, I had no idea what a sailing bag was and whether or not I needed one. I was simply told to get one… so I did. I went to my local sailing store, bought the first model I saw, and then went on my merry way.

The sailing bag I got was adequate, but it wasn’t great. It just had enough room for all my sailing gear, but it was certainly not the best bag out there. As time went on, I started paying more attention to other sailors’ bags, and I quickly realized that mine was not the best option.

If you’ve ever been sailing, you know how important it is to have a good sailing bag. But you might not know why. There are a few reasons why a sailing bag is such an important tool… understandably many of them are about convenience and practicality, rather than fashion.

Things To Consider When Choosing The Right Sailing Bags

The right sailing bag is one that is versatile, durable, and easy to use.  Take your time choosing.

If you’re sailing, you want your bag to be able to hold all the things you need to get the job done. This means that the size you require may vary depending on the type of sailing you do and what you like to carry, but it also means that your bag will be quite big. You want a bag that is going to be durable and easy to carry.

A good sailing bag will not only keep your gear protected from the elements but will also be easy to carry. This is why some people choose waterproof bags, or if they carry a laptop, padded options are also available. Long, strong, comfortable carry straps or handles are a must, and a zipper that will not fail when exposed to saltwater and the sun is also critical.

With so many choices out there, how can you decide which sailing bag is the best one for you?

Best Sailing Bags… What’s Your Pick?

There are many types of sailing bags, but the best sailing bags all have the same basic requirements – lightweight, durable construction, and waterproof. Some come with a specially designed airtight seal while others have zippers.

Each has straps to allow you to carry the bag wherever you need it to be. A few styles will actually float on the water should they get knocked overboard. All contain compartments for added security when storing valuables.

Often when out on the water it’s a concern that your valuables and gear can get wet. If you share this concern, then you’ll want to invest in one of the best sailing bags you can afford to keep your essentials from getting damaged.

Before you go out to purchase a bag, you should know what to look for and what you want. There are many different things you need to be aware of before you purchase a sailing bag. If you enjoy sailing, you should definitely consider investing in a good quality sailing bag. A good sailing bag will last a long time and make your life a lot easier. Because it’s hard to know what to look for, we hope that our picks of the best sailing bags that we have provided above have helped to narrow down the options for you.

Sometimes, an expensive bag will not provide great waterproofness as an affordable bag will. So, what features make a backpack suitable for your sailing needs? Firstly, your backpack has to be waterproof so that you can store your items inside without being worried that they’ll get wet. Secondly, prefer a compact backpack that is easy to carry, fold, and can withstand different weather conditions. Thirdly, durable materials, additional storage for small items, and versatility are some other important features that a backpack/drybag/duffel bag should be equipped with. I hope that this list will facilitate your purchase and help you choose the best backpack tailored to your needs!

What Sailing Bag to Buy, and How to Pack It – A Week on the Water

June 12, 2021 by Travis Turgeon Leave a Comment

Sailing Bag and Sandals for a Week Long Holiday

The sun is shining, a light breeze is blowing through your hair, and the water resembles a never-ending sheet of rippled glass – this is paradise. Things don’t get much better than spending quality time with friends and family – unless, of course, you’re on a sailboat. No matter where your “paradise” lies, you’ll need to pack appropriately for the destination and experiences ahead. In this article, we fill you in on how to choose a sailing bag, and we break down our tried-and-true packing list to prepare you for a sun-soaked holiday on the water.

Choosing a Sailing Bag – Our Favorites

A North Face duffel bag packed for a sailing holiday

When it comes to choosing a sailing bag that gives you the most bang for your buck without lacking style, there are a few key things to keep in mind.

On a sailboat, hard-bodied luggage is far from ideal – and actually, it can become a real headache. Even boats on the larger end of the scale have limited space for luggage, which is why we always recommend soft-bodied, duffel-style baggage. You can unpack and consolidate these types of bags to fit in confined spaces without the risk of damaging the boat’s interior. Without caution, the hard plastic wheels and metal zippers that come standard on most luggage can wreak havoc on a boat’s woodwork and paint.

Further, while the crashing waves and salty summer air add excitement to the overall experience, wear-and-tear on your sailing bag and belongings is inevitable without suitable construction materials. Zippers quickly become corroded, your clothing may become damp and moldy, and your electronics can receive an epic blow to their functionality.

A good sailing duffel bag for sailing holidays should be lightweight, compactable, waterproof or water-resistant, and comfortable to carry over your shoulder. If the bag holds all of those qualities and still remains fashionable – you’re ready to rock.

Let’s take a look at our three favorite bags for sailing holidays.

Skog A Kust – DuffelSak Pro Dry Sailing Ba g

Man throws a yellow Skog A Kust Duffel bag from a boat

Coming in at our number one spot, DuffelSak Dry Bags are one of the coolest sailing bags on the market. The Swedish-based company, Skog A Kust, produces bags and other products for those with a passion for the outdoors. All of the products made by DuffelSak have a waterproof exterior and a roll-down top – ensuring that even if your bag takes a splash, your belongings remain dry. The following features come standard on this bag, ensuring you get the most out of your time on the water:

  • Two sturdy handles
  • Padded and adjustable shoulder straps
  • Soft and flexible material for maximum comfort
  • Metal D-rings for attachment to boats, bicycles, and more

To top it all off, Skog A Kust offers a 100% money-back guarantee to anyone who doesn’t find this bag suitable for their needs – for any reason, hassle-free.

North Face – Base Camp Duffel

North Face Base Camp Duffel Bag for sailing

The North Face is a world-renowned brand in the outdoor community, supplying its customers with outdoor products since 1968. Although originally founded to supply climbers with gear for mountain climbing, the company has since redeveloped the brand and expanded to nearly all outdoor markets – including sailing. A North Face sailing bag will stand up to most other high-quality “sailing only” brands.

The Base Camp duffel has become particularly popular in the sailing market due to its rugged, high-quality build that provides a ton of functionality in nearly any scenario. This bag sits so high on our list for its sailing compatibility, but it also has padded shoulder straps and flexible material that makes it one of the most comfortable carry-ons we’ve used. Not only is it comfortable, but its water-resistant construction keeps your belongings dry when living around the water. You can also wear it as a backpack, so if you need to walk through a busy airport or similar area – you won’t be taking up a ton of “side-to-side” space. Lastly, the compression straps are an excellent addition for limited-space scenarios, and the loops on the outside of the sailing bag make it incredibly easy to lash onto nearly any surface.

Musto – Waterproof Dry Carryall

Taking the third spot on our list is the Musto Waterproof Dry Carryall, a sailing bag meant for life around the water. With a bonded seam and roll-top construction, neither rain nor ocean water will make its way to your belongings – the perfect fit for boating in any capacity.

A common complaint with roll-down bags is that air gets trapped inside when rolling the top down – creating a void for your items to move around inside. To combat this, the Musto Carryall has a valve that lets you release the air after rolling down the top, making it easy to compact and stow during your journey. For added convenience, the transparent window in the front of the sailing bag enables you to quickly identify your things, reducing clutter and time spent looking for something specific. Finally, the 65-liter capacity is just about perfect for anyone taking a week-long sailing holiday, so this bag should be a top consideration.

Day-Bag Bonus: Skog A Kust – BackSak Pro

Man shakes water off of the Skog A Kust Backsak Pro Daybag in the ocean

Making yet another appearance on our list of the best sailing bags in the game, Skog A Kust delivers the BackSak Pro – a waterproof, airtight design that floats in the water. This sailing bag is truly the perfect companion for a day trip from a boat. The backpack-style sailing bag has a 35-liter main compartment, including a padded laptop space and a front zipping pouch for your paper valuables such as passports and cash. Its ripstop nylon construction provides maximum sturdiness, and the bag weighs only 2.3 pounds – a featherweight compared to other day-bags of the same quality. It even has an adjustable and removable waist strap for hiking or long walks. There really isn’t a better option for a small day-bag while at sea. As with all of Skog A Kust’s other products – they are 100% refundable with a satisfaction guarantee.

Pack Like a Pro – Only Take What You Need

Items being packed for a week long sailing vacation

The ultimate packing list is one that includes everything you need, from underwear to accessories, while remaining as minimalistic as possible. Trust us, leave your expensive jewelry and fancy leather shoes at home – you’ll spend most of your time barefoot and in your bathing suit. Below, we outline what you should bring and what to leave at home – you’ll be surprised to find out just how little we recommend.

Man and woman jump from a boat into the ocean

There’s an old rule of thumb to follow when packing for a trip – regardless of the destination. It says, “Pack your bag with what you think you’ll need. Then unpack, and take only half.” Nearly everyone overthinks about what’s necessary while away from home. They pack as if they’ll spill a glass of wine on every piece of clothing they own – like t-shirts and shorts aren’t sold everywhere around the world. You should prepare for numerous scenarios, though, and we’re here to help you find the right balance for your week on the water.

Consider the following for your trip:

(4-5) shirts.

These can be t-shirts, cutoffs, long-sleeved, or anything suitable for daytime in your chosen location. If you’re heading for tropical, sunny destinations, you should consider picking up a few moisture-wicking shirts. Not only will this help manage the smell of your sweat-soaked tops, but they will also dry incredibly fast in the sun. Perfect for re-use or quick hand-washed laundry.

(2) Pairs of Shorts :

You really won’t need more than two pairs of shorts, leggings, or whatever other bottoms you think you’ll spend your time in on the boat. In fact, you may not be wearing them at all beyond the transit to and from the dock. Remember, board shorts and bikinis will be the go-to nearly every day, and unless you find yourself out for a night in the city, shorts and pants won’t be necessary.

(5) Pairs of Underwear :

One of the few items we don’t like to skimp on is underwear. You should do yourself – and your boat mates – a favor and pack several pairs for your time onboard. You’ll spend most of your time in or near the water, though, so if you do need to re-use something, you can always give them a quick hand-wash with your travel detergent – which we cover below as a carry-on item.

(2-3) Swimsuits :

Depending on your style, you may want a few diverse sets of swimsuits, be it board shorts or bikinis. For men, board shorts can easily double as daytime walking shorts in less formal settings. It even helps to narrow down the list of items you carry with you on a day trip. Women can wear bikinis under their clothes, sure – but why not bring a couple of different swimwear styles for different occasions. Class up one of your suits for the beachside bars and restaurants, and get yourself something more simple for the days on the boat.

(1) Light Jacket or Sweatshirt :

If it’s your first time heading to the tropics on a boat, you may be surprised to know just how chilly it can get at night, especially when there’s a storm rolling in. We recommend taking a light jacket, preferably waterproof, to keep warm on a less-than-ideal evening. Further, boat cabins can get cold, and you may not have the option to change the temperature. Pack a light sweatshirt or pair of sweatpants to avoid an uncomfortable situation.

(2-3) Pairs of Shoes :

Having the proper footwear on a week-long boat trip is surprisingly important. We suggest bringing two pairs of shoes: one for day excursions, and the other for onboard the boat. Remember, you’ll likely be taking a few walks through town or going on short outings, so having a more rugged pair of shoes is ideal. We suggest a nice pair of hiking sandals such as Tevas or Chacos. The second pair of shoes will be used on the boat. Rubber-soled boat shoes offer the comfort you need without risking your personal safety. Rubber soles grip the boat’s deck tightly, dry fast, and are incredibly durable – an essential feature in salty and wet conditions. Sperry’s are the perfect boat companion.

Travel Sized Toiletries

Travel sized toiletries for a sailing holiday

As with any holiday, travel-sized toiletries can be a lifesaver – or they can be a total waste of space. Throughout our years spent on the water, we’ve realized that some things should stay on the store shelves.

Let’s take a look below at a few toiletries we always recommend bringing for first-time sailing holidays.

Hanging toiletry bag:.

For anyone who has traveled outside of the country before, you’ll probably understand just why this item is so important. A waterproof, hanging toiletry bag makes bathroom life incredibly convenient, eliminating the need to set your personal hygiene products down on shared spaces. Nearly every shower and bathroom will have a hanging hook, and these bags are the perfect match.

Toothpaste/Toothbrush :

Of the more apparent toiletries not to leave behind, oral care products take the first spot. Don’t wait until your sailing out of the marina to realize you left these essentials behind.

Reef-Safe Sunscreen :

Sailing holidays and coral reefs go hand-in-hand, and those of us that love spending time above these teeming underwater communities want to do everything in our power to protect them for years to come. Reef-safe sunscreens lack the chemicals present in standard sunscreens that destroy these living ecosystems from the inside out, making them the ideal choice for a sailing holiday.

Aloe Vera :

If you plan on spending a significant amount of time in the sun, aloe vera should be somewhere at the top of the list of essentials. Don’t let a little too much time in the sun or a lack of sunscreen ruin your entire holiday.

Necessities

Person holds a passport before a sailing holiday

You might not think you’d need a ton of different documents for a simple week-long vacation on the water, but there are certainly a few that are helpful if you’re heading out of the country or onward to new destinations.

Even if you’re only traveling domestically, you’ll need at least a couple of the following.

As expected, you’ll need to have your passport with you when leaving and re-entering the country. Customs and immigration officers will be checking you in and out of seaports just as they would in an airport, so be sure to check the passport eligibility requirements before leaving home. Some countries require a specific number of passport pages to be blank, while others simply want to know where you’ve been and where you’ll be heading.

Some countries require you to arrange a visa before entering through immigration, although most countries have some sort of “Visa on Arrival” service. Either way, check with your embassy in the country of intended travel, or simply visit the tourism website for different destinations. All information regarding immigration and customs will be available on government sites.

Secondary ID :

It’s always best to carry some form of secondary identification, such as a driver’s license or I.D. card. This allows officials to quickly verify your identity and can make for a much smoother traveling experience.  * Pro Tip : Copy, print, and laminate the I.D. page of your passport in color. Use this copy in place of your invaluable paper passport, something you want to avoid exposing to the salty, humid tropical air.

Cash and Cards :

This will depend entirely on the destination, but most places will allow access to at least a few ATM machines. Still, it’s a good idea to keep some cash on you for emergencies and to bring a backup card with you – stored in a separate location from your primary card. If anything happens while abroad, having a spare card or cash can be a life-saver.

* Make sure you notify your bank of your travel plans well before departure. If you try to use one of your cards outside your home country or even your home town – the fraud department may flag your card for fraud. If there’s a time difference or happens on the weekend, some banks can be difficult or impossible to reach quickly. Do yourself a favor, and make sure you register your plans with the bank – even if you only plan to use the card for emergencies.

Rental Documents :

Not everyone will have to carry rental documents for their trip, but some will. When chartering a boat, always take at least one copy of the rental agreement with you for requests from immigration authorities, police, or insurance agents. Our suggestion – if it’s not yours, keep the rental agreement with you during your entire trip.

Medications :

If you or anyone traveling with you has a medical condition that requires medication, this is a no-brainer. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist before leaving the country, and try to fill up your prescriptions in case you get stuck abroad for longer than expected. Some medications aren’t available in foreign countries, and some may be considered illegal.

Entertainment

Group plays water games near the beach on a sailing trip

We get it – a long, uneventful weekend on the water listening to waves roll in sounds like paradise. Who says that time isn’t also good for socializing or reading that book you’ve been trying to finish, though?

We have a small list of things we enjoy taking with us on holiday, so consider the following items for your trip – especially when traveling with kids.

If you like to read, there’s no better place to do it than on the water or lounging on the beach. The sun perfectly lights the pages, you’re warm and relaxed, and you’re surrounded by the sounds of bliss. Even if you only get a couple of hours of reading in, it’s worth the luggage space. Feeling like you may want to own a sailboat of your own someday? Take along some of the best books to prepare you for the cruising lifestyle – you’ll be reading them in the perfect setting to get you motivated.

We’re so used to having music at our fingertips that it might be hard to remember – there isn’t always wifi while at sea. What’s your next best bet? Download some of your favorites, or take advantage of the ship’s CD player if they have one (most do). It even gives you the chance to brush the dust off of some of your old favorite albums.

Classic card games are good fun, whether with friends or family. Kids love to play cards when camping, during sleepovers, or any time they aren’t bothered by modern technology – so why would a boat be any different? Just make sure you print out or screenshot the rules to a few games before setting sail. In any case, even if you don’t draw a single card from the deck, you won’t be taking up any space that will be missed.

Miscellaneous

Pair of sunglasses in the sand on a sailing vacation

The items on this list are not all-inclusive, but over the years, we’ve been able to make use of them a few times each.

Pick and choose as you wish – but remember, packing light is the name of the game for a week-long sailing holiday.

This goes right up at the top of our list – nearly everyone will want to document their trip somehow. In this day in age, there’s really no need to go out and buy yourself some extravagant camera just for a holiday, but if you have the desire for it and the cash to blow – by all means. An alternate consideration to make is buying an action camera that can be used underwater. If you’re headed for vibrant coral reefs, that’s one scenario that will make for some pretty epic memories. If you’re just starting out with underwater photography, be sure to study up some of the best underwater cameras, housings, and techniques to capture the perfect images under the waves.

Microfiber Towels :

To preface this, remember – there will be towels on board the boat. If you have a little extra space, though, consider using it to store a microfiber towel for day trips and excursions. These towels dry incredibly fast in the sun, and they don’t hold sand like most other towels, so if you’re headed for a day on the beach – it might be worth the space.

Polarized Sunglasses :

While polarized shades may not be necessary for everyone’s list, many would call them a requirement. Not all sunglasses are created equal, and polarized lenses make a world of difference – especially around the water. Apart from the added protection for your eyes, polarized lenses are a great way to cut through the glare and reflection on the water. In any case, make sure you protect your eyes with something during your days in the sun.

International Outlet Adapter :

Depending on where you’re headed, you may want to bring an international outlet adapter for your electronics.

Home Country Flag :

Many people in the sailing community like to bring their home country’s flag to fly during their journey. It’s just a fun way to represent where you’re coming from, and you’ll be sure to see plenty of other sailboats flying their flags as well.

All that time in the sun can take a toll on your skin, and if you’re not careful, your lips are in line to see the worst of it. SPF lip balms are your best bet for combatting chapped and sunburned lips while on holiday.

Travel Detergent :

This may be one of the most valuable items you can bring, depending on your style and how you pack. If you want to pack like a minimalist, bring detergent so that you can hand wash clothes in the sink. For drying, simply hang items on a hanger or attach them with a clip to the boat’s deck for quick dry times.

What Not to Pack – Leave the Valuables at Home

Jewelry on a woman's hand

Probably the most essential consideration to make is what NOT to bring on your sailing holiday. Too often, people bring valuables and items of sentiment that are lost or damaged forever.

Do yourself a favor, and leave the following items waiting safely at home for your return.

Valuable and jewelry :.

Valuables and jewelry only serve one purpose at sea – search and recovery missions. Trust us when we say you don’t need these things on the ocean. Even if you are heading inland for a night on the town, you can do without them. Don’t believe us? Ask around to see what others have to say about it. We wouldn’t steer you in the wrong direction.

Items Made of Iron :

For obvious reasons, anything made of iron should be left at home. The moist, salty air will rapidly degrade and corrode iron products.

Dress Shoes :

Who wears dress shoes on a boat? The only reason you’d need a nice pair of shoes, be it leather or fancy high heels, is for a night on the town. Let’s just say this – you won’t find many people walking beachside in stilettos. Keep them in the closet – they’ll be waiting for you when you get back.

Anything of Sentiment :

It should go without saying, the ocean can be unforgiving. If you have a ring, bracelet, or necklace that means the world to you, don’t risk bringing it near the water. Valuables that end up overboard often become permanent possessions of the sea.

8. YETI Panga 75

This bag stands out quite easily from its rivals. At 11 inches x 12 inches x 15.5 inches, it can hold a lot of gear, and the duffel design provides more versatile storage options. There are six lash points arranged in a line that you can use to secure the bag in any manner that suits you, not to mention two pairs of handles at the top and bottom, which simplify transportation, and the Hydrolok zipper that is designed to keep all moisture out of the bag.

With a dense nylon shell and rugged EVA-molded bottom, this bag doesn’t need coddling. You can expose it to all manner of savage conditions. It will hold its own

  • Extremely well built
  • 100% waterproof
  • Good looking bag
  • Excellent customer service
  • Hydrolok zipper and lots of straps
  • Expensive, but worth the price

9. Sea to Summit Hydraulic Pack

This bag features TPU Laminated rings top PVC fabric (600D) which, on its own, is quite impressive, especially when you consider the level of waterproofing and durability it brings to the table. But, for most people, the most impressive aspect of this item is the fact that it can switch between being a backpack and a dry bag.

The key to this transformation is the harness system which boasts aluminum buckles that are built to resist corrosion and damage even when exposed to water. The straps are thick, which speaks to their durability. But they are also unlikely to cause the user any discomfort.

Available in various sizes and colors, this bag is expensive, but the features it offers are worth the price tag.

10. NRS Bill’s Bag

This is a simple bag; Some people are a little negative about the roll tops. Yes, they are easy to use, but if you don’t know what you’re doing, mistakes can happen. And yet, that doesn’t really detract from the allure of this bag, which is just as durable as many of its competitors despite being so much cheaper.

It lets you keep your gear in place using four compression straps. The fasteners are aluminum, which makes them reliable, less likely to succumb to corrosion,

The item works as a day bag, though you are free to use it for overnight trips. It comes with an adjustable backpack harness. While the shoulder straps are padded for added comfort, you can remove the harness if it gets in the way. With this bag, you get great value for less money.

  • Removable padded backpack straps
  • Side straps for compression
  • Easy to carry thanks to its straps
  • Comes in two colors only

11. Big Agnes Pumphouse

This bag isn’t quite as impressive as other dry bags when it comes to waterproofing. It is still waterproof. But it doesn’t compare favorably against products that specialize in this area. However, that is a worthwhile trade-off for all the other functions it performs.

You can use it as a stuff sack, an inflatable pillow, and even a backcountry shower. Weighing just 2.9 ounces, this is as versatile as any boating and camping tool can get, made from light aviation-grade nylon and primarily designed to act as a pump. If you need a dry bag that also does everything else, you don’t need to look any further than the Big Agnes.

Average Rank: 4.4 out of 5

  • Heavy duty material
  • Can be used as an air pump
  • Come in one color only
  • Need to learn how to use it

12. Watershed Chattooga

This bag’s biggest draw, the ZipDry closure, is also the most annoying. Made from Armathane, which is an incredibly strong material, the closure is supposed to be bombproof. This is probably an exaggeration, but everyone who has encountered it agrees that it is infuriatingly difficult to open.

That being said, this closure is also the reason why the bag is water and dust-proof. Not even animals can get past the closure. So you can trust it to protect your most valuable gear. Besides the four lash points, which are guaranteed to secure the bag in place, there are compression straps to squeeze the load together, along with padded handles.

This bag will give you peace of mind regardless of the landscape awaiting you on your journey.

This is a very affordable dry bag Made of (0.6 mm) thick waterproof material suitable for any type of outdoor activity such as boating, kayaking, rafting, hiking, and you name it. The casting is a versatile dry bag built for any extreme outdoor adventure, such as kayaking, fishing, boating, rafting, hiking, or camping. It is made of durable 100% waterproof 500D PVC material fused with welded seams and reinforced with vinyl, making this bag extremely durable.

Like all dry bags, it has a roll-top closure system that enables you to fold it a few times and buckle it to seal the bag completely so that no water can get inside.

The mouth opening is wide, making it easy to fill the bag with clothes and other stuff that you need for your trip. It comes in 5, 10, 20, and 30 liters. Those bags are made of prograde waterproof polyester, a study and lightweight material that resists water and tears, providing maximum protection.

Plus, they are built using taped seams technology

to prevent water from penetrating through the bag and protect your content.

Another cool feature is the rectangular base at the bottom of the bag. This adds Extra protection to your belongings and helps you pack your pack more efficiently.

They also have a D ring attached to the clips, which comes in handy if you want to secure the bag to your boat.

Their solid roll-top closer system provides an exceptional watertight seal. Users found them very easy to use. Great dry bags, but they don’t have any shoulder straps, which can be a downside if you want to carry them long distances.

Other than that, the Frelaxy is a fantastic set of dry bags to use for boating, camping, fishing, and more.

Guide to Choose Your Waterproof Dry Bag

How can you identify the best dry bags for boating in a market that is saturated with dry bags? You have to keep the following factors in mind:

Most dry bags are made from either Vinyl or Nylon. Of the two, Nylon is more popular. Vinyl works for smaller bags used to carry personal items. But Nylon tends to dominate the market because it is so durable, especially when manufacturers coat it with siliconized CORDURA.

You can determine the durability of a nylon bag by looking at the denier, which is a unit that speaks to the density of the nylon.

You can get dry bags in numerous sizes. When selecting the size, you need to consider the space on your boat and the number of items you wish to store. There is no point in buying a bag so large that it can’t fit on your watercraft.

Electronics, toiletries, and other personal items can fit in a 5-liter bag. You don’t need anything larger than a 30-liter bag for your clothes. Find a balance between the contents you need to store and the available space on your craft.

D-rings are an essential requirement for dry bags. You use them to secure the bag to your boat. You can also string multiple bags together, making them easier to retrieve in an emergency. If a bag you like doesn’t have them, you can buy D-rings separately from a store.

Any dry bag you intend to carry requires straps. Choose bags with a strap style that appeals to you. Some bags, for instance, are meant to be thrown and held over the shoulder. If possible, prioritize straps with padding. This will make heavier bags more comfortable to carry.

Closure Type

The best closure type for a dry bag is a roll top. You can get waterproof zippers that will combat the rain. But the chances of zippers surviving extensive immersion are low. Roll-top closures are more reliable. They create an airtight seal.

You need to ensure that your dry bag can survive the punishment boating can sometimes deliver. You need assurance that the fabric can contend with blunt and sharp force without giving way. The same goes for the straps, handles, and lash points. If they fall apart at the wrong time, you could lose all your valuables. Make sure the bag you wish to buy has a reputation for durability. If it is nylon, consider the denier.

Submersible

Mild waterproofing is perfectly acceptable for camping. But for boating purposes, your dry bag should keep your valuables sufficiently dry even when it is submerged, which could just as easily happen out on the water. The closure type has a role to play in this area.

Welded Seams

Most high-quality dry bags use seam welding to ensure that all stitches and folds of the bag are connected to create a perfect seal that doesn’t permit leaks. However, do not presume that every bag you encounter has welded seams. Look for this feature.

Level of Waterproofing

The level of waterproofing in a dry bag is measured using the hydrostatic head unit or the IPX System. Hydrostatic head refers to the quantity of water that can press down on a bag before it springs a leak. For instance, a hydrostatic head measurement of 10,000 millimeters means that you can safely immerse the bag in 10 meters of water.

The IPX system is a waterproof ranking system. Most dry bags fall somewhere between IPX6 and 8.

How to Maintain Dry Bags

If you want your dry bag to last for a long time, you need to clean it properly, especially if you often use it at the beach or in salt water. Thanks to their slick material, they are easy to clean—no need to use any brush or washing machine.

The only thing you need to do is to rinse your dry bag with clear water after each use and let it dry. Now your bag may smell for some reason; then, you would want to use a gentle soap with lukewarm water.

But that’s it. Just make sure that your bag is completely dry before you fill it up with clothes or material to prevent moisture.

How to Seal Your Dry Bag

This is an important part. If your dry bag is well secured, all your content will be safe and dry. The process is straightforward. Just make sure to follow these simple steps:

  • Fill up your bag to three-quarters.

2. Roll the top three times

3. Fold the edges of the top

4. Buckles with the clips, and you are good to go

-Dry bags come in many different colors, blue, yellow, black, green, and orange. But the brighter ones allow you to spot your bag from a distance, which can be very useful if you want to be seen in a crowded place.

-Dry bags are not only used for protecting content from the water. They also can serve as a pillow or as floatation devices. To turn it into a pillow, just fill your bag with clothes or towels. And if you want it to float on the water, leave a bit of air inside when you seal it.

-If you use mosquito repellent, try to store it in a plastic bag because if it pours into your dry bag, it will destroy it. It’s a real poison, and if it can damage a heavy-duty 500D PVC dry bag, think about what it does to your skin and your body. Try natural repellents such as citronella; mosquitos hate this smell, and it’s not harmful.

-Some dry bags have an external pocket, but the problem is that those pockets are usually not waterproof, only proof splash, which is not enough to protect your phone or other electronic items. So be careful!

-If you go on a long excursion, it’s always good to take some PVC patches and Aquaseal with you. Even though dry bags are thick and durable, you never know what can happen. A tiny hole can cause your bag to leak. So it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Final Words

At the end of the day, your choice of a dry bag for boating is going to depend on how much you are willing to pay. In an ideal situation, the waterproof dry bags for boating should feature the best nylon material, the highest level of waterproofing, welded seams, and the strongest roll-top closures, to mention but a few.

But the best bags with the strongest features are also the most expensive. You need to find a bag that has the right mix of features but which also fits your budget. That means knowing which features to sacrifice in favor of others.

Hello, I really want to appreciate your effort in putting together this website and writing this article. When traveling on the sea, there is every guarantee that there will be contact with water and we would not want some of our gears to get wet. The guidelines you have dropped here are very insightful and helpful. But are there any other site with different prices that may be lower?  I would like to know

I am glad you find the article useful, thank you!

Sure there are other sites, and you are free to compare prices with them. Bear in mind, though, that Amazon is one of the cheapest online markets in the world, and it’s challenging to compete with it.

However, it’s always good to look around and see if you can find better deals:)

Hello Daniella. These waterproof dry bags are not very common to me but they’re really good for several reasons especially rainfalls in my own case or when I fall out of a boat with my bag in my back (lol). All these bags you have recommended are definitely the best but I really fancy ZBRO Waterproof Dry Bag (especially as a result of the look).

All the best!

Hey there Daniella,

Thank you for this great and indepth article on waterproof dry bags. I am not a watersports fanatic, sailor or deep sea fisherman but I do enjoy that occassional kayaking and beach trips. My main concern was where do I put my valuables when enoying the water. These bags will be great to store my stuff and not worry about it getting wet. I really like Relentless Recreation Dry Bag Backpack, I prefer a backpack type bad and the adjustable chest strap makes it really convenient to carry around.

Hello Lawrence,

If you have any questions, please, don’t hesitate to ask. I am always happy to help

Thank you for the comment, and I wish you a lovely day.

I like sites like this as I love travelling on the water!  One of my best friends has a sailboat, but oddly enough doesn’t have any quality waterproof dry bags matching the level of quality you’ve mentioned in your article.  I will definitely be routing him your way so that he can see for himself!

(I did encounter some broken pics, but at least the links still work.)

That’s a great idea to share this article with your friend:) I am sure he will find a high-quality bag here.

Let me know if you need help with anything. I am always happy to assist.

These dry bags look very well constructed and like they would definitely keep your things dry out on the water. My question is about full submersion. Is there a time limit for how long a bag can be left underwater before it becomes compromised? Or could you just leave it there indefinitely without any water seeping inside?

Great question, thank you for asking. Dry bags are designed to protect from water, but not for being submerged. It’s written on any dry bag label. Now, if by accident the bag fall and submerge, and it’s well secured, chances are your stuff will stay intact, but it’s not 100% sure.

I hope this answered your question.

Let me know if you need more info. I am always willing to help.

Thank you again for the comment, and I wish you a lovely day.

This is actually an amazing product to have when you go sailing. Can I also use it for camping or is it specifically meant for when you go sailing? I will be sure to do more research on this product as I was not aware of it until today. Thank you for this lovely review.

Feel free to use a dry bag for any water activity; these bags are designed to keep all your content dry and safe. You can definitely use them for kayaking, hiking, camping, boating, and other outdoor activities.

I hope it helped.

Thank you for the comment, and I wish you a fantastic day.

Why do you have a passion for Cruising Sea? What inspired you to write this article? Do you have any recommendations for people who are new to sailing? Why did some of your options lower on your list rival your top pick and best rated?

Is there anything else you’d recommend for sailers? Could you provide an article for beginners, intermediate, and advanced? Do you think your advice is mutable or relatively consistent? Are there any other factors determining which waterproof dry bags are best? Thanks!

Great to see you again on my website.

I hope you enjoyed the article and, most importantly, you found it helpful.

Thank you for passing by and the comment.

I wish you a wonderful day.

Thanks for sharing this article about the best waterproof dry bags for sailing. I do not personally sail, but I am in the process of purchasing a gift for someone in my life who does enjoy sailing. These waterproof dry bags seem like they would come in very handy, but I wasn’t sure if the smaller ones would just be too small to be useful.

If budget was not a concern, which of the larger bags would you consider to be the “best” all around?

You are welcome; it’s a pleasure:)

Dry bags are quite affordable, especially the small ones. To answer your question, I would definitely pick the Vichelo dry bag. It’s spacious, and the quality is top-notch.I am sure you’ll love it.

I hope it helped. Please let me know if you need more help. I am always happy to assist:)

Although I do not spend as much time on the water as in previous years, I do appreciate this article on waterproof dry bags very much. You have provided a lot of quality information here, and we do spend a good amount of time at the beach certain times of the year. I also will consider these articles as gifts as I do have family and friends that love to fish and sail on the water. For the quality of these bags I find the prices very reasonable.

I am glad you found the article useful. I am sure your family and friends would appreciate dry bags very much as a gift. Thank you for passing by and the comment.

Starting with a Simms product is a great way to open this review. Simms is synonymous with quality, and their attention to detail and commitment to customer satisfaction have created a lot of brand loyalty to this company.

Their Dry Creek Duffel is no different and was designed for heavy use and travel. 600 D polyester Ripstop fabric is the epitome of ruggedness.

The fabric can resist abrasion and seam-ripping well, and the double-sided TPU lamination not only strengthens the sidewalls, but they also are super effective at keeping water out. The abrasion-resistant bottom keeps the bag open while upright for easy loading and 60 L gives you all the room you would need to keep what can’t get wet safe while buzzing around in your boat.

This bag was meant for travel and can be carried in multiple different ways, even on your back. Check out this Simms product, because it is most likely a great addition to your boating outfit.

  • Quality componentry. This is a tough piece of equipment that is reviewed well and will last a lifetime
  • Multiple carry options mean that hiking this bag in is easy and intuitive
  • Keeps what can’t get wet safe. Period

Gonex Large Waterproof Dry Bag

View on Amazon →

This dry bag from Gonex is warmly reviewed and affordable. The PVC material used in its construction is super durable and resistant to water, ice, and snow.

These bags come in two different capacities, 60 L and 80 L, and these are both big sizes, suitable for a ton of gear. The back nylon zip pocket is perfect for storing wet shoes , laundry, swimsuits, and whatever else you want to be organized but away from your dry gear. This bag is super versatile, even if you don’t have a boat.

It works just as well on a kayak , or the beach. Reviewers of this product were very happy with its ability to be used in a variety of different outdoor applications, and at a reasonable price, it’s less alarming to pull the trigger on this well-designed and functional dry bag.

  • Great price point for this quality piece of gear
  • The versatility of this bag is a great selling point, you can use it for a lot of different outdoor applications
  • Built for travel
  • None! This is a great dry bag that’s reviewed well, spacious, and functional. Highly recommended

Skog A Kust Duffel Sak Waterproof Duffle dry bag

The DuffelSak from Skog A Kust is a great dry bag. This works great on your drift boat or kayak, but reviewers of this bag use it for a lot more. From backpacking to long-distance motorcycle outings, this is a warmly reviewed dry bag.

Spacious and available in two sizes (40 L and 60 L), the roll-down top clips in place and allows this bag to stand up to extremely adverse conditions (heavy rain, snow, and frequent splashes on your watercraft).

I like products that are equally useful in a variety of conditions, and this bag fits that bill, and all at a reasonable price point. Check this bag out, it is great.

  • Superiorly designed with great componentry
  • Super versatile, can be used for multiple outdoor applications, and wherever it’s wet
  • Rugged and functional
  • I looked hard for negative reviews of this dry bag and outside of a few manufacturer’s errors, there’s nothing negative to report. Highly recommended

Best Boating Dry Bags For The Money

We felt necessary to provide a few highly recommended dry bags for boating with a more affordable price tag.

4. Simms Dry Creek Dry Bag (Medium)

  • 210 D Nylon Ripstop Material
  • 27 L Capacity
  • PU Coated and DWR Treated
  • Roll-Top Closure with TPU-Coated Webbing
  • Fully Taped Seams
  • Single D-Ring

These are the kind of dry bags that I am used to–simple, functional, and rugged. 210 D Nylon treated with DWR water-resistant coating, this bag keeps stuff dry and packs away tight.

The roll-top closure keeps water out and the fully taped seams add structural integrity to the bag. The single D-ring is perfect to lash this bag into your watercraft.

Simms uses great materials and makes great products, and this is a great bag from this company at a very affordable price.

  • Simple, functional, and durable, everything you want in a dry bag
  • Not submersible, so keep this lashed to your watercraft

5. Fishpond Thunderhead Rolldown Boat Bag

  • 1680 D TPU Coated Nylon CyclePond Fabric
  • 15 L Capacity
  • Welded Seams
  • Roll-Top Waterproof Closure
  • Attached D-Ring

Fishpond thunderhead roll-top dry bag

View on Trident Fly Fishing →

Fishpond is a great company with an awesome conservation mindset. This bag utilizes Fishpond’s proprietary CyclePond fabric, made from recycled polymers, and that’s just awesome.

The Thunderhead Rolldown has many features of more expensive dry bags, like welded seams, and of course,  the waterproof roll-top closure.

The attached D-Ring means you can lash this to your boat kayak, or backpack . It is an affordable, versatile dry bag, made with recycled materials at a great price. Highly recommended.

  • Rugged and durable whether you’ve got it tied to your watercraft or not. Versatile.
  • Simplistic and functional.
  • 15 L is a pretty modest capacity

6. Earthpak Waterproof Dry Bag

  • 500 D PVC Construction
  • Available in 10 L, 20 L, 30 L, 40 L, and 55 L Capacity
  • IPX8 Waterproof Phone Case Included
  • Shoulder Strap on Smaller Models, Backpack Straps on the Larger Capacity Bags
  • 5-Year Warranty

Earthpak Waterproof Dry bag

Earthpak’s waterproof dry bag is a solid offering from a good company. 500 D PVC construction and welded seams keep water out. These bags are available in a multitude of sizes to fit your needs.

The smaller models come with a single shoulder strap (10 and 20 L) and the larger models have backpack straps. Earthpak bags are high-viz and float, meaning that if disaster strikes, you can probably recover your dry bag if it gets in the water.

The IPX8 WAterproof phone case is a great feature, and you can operate your phone while it’s in the case. These bags are great and affordable. Check these out.

  • $19.99-$38.99 is a great price point, especially if you need multiple dry bags for your fly fishing endeavors
  • Durable and effective
  • Great customer service with this company
  • There are some instances of manufacturer’s errors in the construction of these bags, slightly more so than the other dry bags I have reviewed. However, at this price point, this bag is worth taking a chance on.

What to Look for in Dry Bag for Boating

One thing to look for in a dry bag for boating is a way to secure it to your watercraft. Many of the above-reviewed dry bags have D-rings that make this easy to do, but a few don’t. The ability to secure your dry bag to your watercraft is important because it usually contains electronics and other important items. Roll-top style closures work best to keep water out.

As far as size goes, only you will know how much space you’ll need for your boat-side dry bag. One thing to keep in mind here is that, if you purchase a large-capacity dry bag, you’ve got to keep it organized, or you will only multiply your headaches out on the water. Your dry bag should be easy to access quickly if need be.

Another thing to keep in mind when looking for a dry bag that’s right for you is how you can carry it. Backpack straps are great but often, you’ll already have a pack that you’re carrying and attaching to your watercraft.

Eric-Carter-Pyramid-Lake

Padded handles and shoulder straps are important features that make getting your stuff to where it needs to be easier and less of a hassle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I don’t have a boat. Do I need a big dry bag?

A: Some of the bigger capacity dry bags in this review aren’t really necessary if you’re bank fishing or wading. You don’t need a 60 L dry bag for a wading day trip. However, many of these bags come in smaller sizes and come in very handy when the weather turns sour.

They are just as effective when camping as they are on a boat, so consider looking at some of the size options available in the above-reviewed bags.

Q: How do I organize my dry bag?

A: While poring over reviews of the products listed here, most reviewers agree that effective organization and customization of your dry bag is key to making them work for you.

If you purchase a large capacity dry bag, keep it organized, or it will end up as a catch-all “black hole.”If what’s in your dry bag is disorganized and a pain to access, this will lead to frustration on the water. Some reviewers used Tupperware, Plano organizers, and other items to make their dry bags more functional and useful.

Reeling It In

Dry bags are super important for extended fly fishing trips, especially on a boat. Trips like this require a ton of gear, and sometimes a lot of electronics and fragile items.

Dry clothes are a must, not just for comfort, but for safety as well. Soaked clothes can quickly lead to hypothermia, especially in cold water. Phones and communication devices need to be protected and kept dry as well, for safety reasons.

The above-reviewed dry bags are great tools for those of us who fish off a boat and cover a lot of water, sometimes for days at a time. That being said, even if you don’t have a boat or kayak, the smaller capacity bags in this review are perfect for attaching to framed backpacks and a blessing to have when engaged in ultralight camping.

I hope that this review has shed some light on some great products. As always, stay safe, stay dry, and tight lines!

Our writers and editors have been using duffels for all the activities we practice and test for, making our experience one based on longer evidence and observation. Where to buy:

Where to buy the north face base camp:.

The North Face Base Camp Duffel is available in sizes ranging from a minimal 31L to a colossal 150L. The 31L is good for both rugged adventures or trips to the gym. The 50L is accepted as a carry-on by most airlines and from there, the larger sizes are great for just about anything you can throw them at.

I’ve got a lot of trust in these bags for some of the most demanding voyages sailing in open vessels and camping in rough terrain. The Base Camp design is also useful for organization–if you have packing cubes.

Its strength lies not in the availability of pockets, but rather in the simplicity. Two side pockets work for smaller items, but there’s no shoe compartment.

The main compartment is easily accessible and flexible, so you can pack your duffel to the brim.

Where to buy Stahlsac Abyss Duffel Bag:

If you’re on the hunt for a sturdy duffel bag that can protect your gear from Mother Nature’s worst, Stahlsac Abyss duffel bags can be quite compelling.

Backpack straps and a durable bottom with a squarish main compartment come in handy with larger gear items. But that will appeal to other travellers too.

Designed with divers in mind, this duffel bag is made with weatherproof ultra-durable TPU nylon that’ll protect your gear from all the elements and any inevitable boating mishaps.

Coming in a cabin-sized convenient 50L, a medium 75L, and a robust 100L, these Stahlsac Abyss duffel bags seem like they can endure any storm that comes their way.

STUBBLE & CO.

Stubble & Co The Weekender

stubble-and-co-the-weekender-on-bradley-shoulder

Where to buy Stubble & Co The Weekender:

Stubble & Co has been making some interesting bags defined by function and form. The Weekender is the company’s premium travel bag designed to accommodate overnight getaways and weekend-long business trips. Its dimensions make it a carry-on that will fit in the overhead compartment of a plane and its design will appeal to travelers that might want something a little more elegant.

This “Designed in London” duffel will immediately appeal to those traveling with a trolley bag. It has both a laptop sleeve and a trolley sleeve for a complete, carry-on-only setup.

But after getting to know this bag, it seems designed for something a little more too.

Its water-resistant canvas material with a hardened body extends the bag’s area of use as far as glamping. Depending on the gym or country club, it will also do well as a sports bag too.

There are some nice features on this 40-liter weekender bag–typical of the British company’s small, but adroit lineup of bags.

After using this bag for camping, sailing and a weekend trip to the lake, our review measures the success of this travel bags’ intention against our expectations and actual experience.

Peak Design

Peak Design 65L Travel Duffel

Peak Design 65l Travel Duffel

Where to buy Peak Design 65L Travel Duffel:

Peak Design has another product that will excite and please organization-obsessed travelers.

The Travel Duffel has a lot of pockets, specialized pockets for items like SD memory cards, power banks and notebooks. It took our two testers some time before they optimized their packing approach, but PD’s bags are similar to Apple products in that they are great when used the way they were designed.

Additionally, Peak Design packing cubes really take advantage of this bags organization strengths, but add another cost/benefit analysis that might scare casual travelers away.

As part of our duffel bag review guide, this bag passed our gauntlet of tests. So, the Peak Design Travel Duffel is also a capable bag in the face of abuse and rain. It’s just not ideal for any kind of hike.

  • Materials: 600D Nylon Canvas Shell with DWR Coating, 900D Nylon Base, #10 UltraZips, Hypalon Pulls
  • Capacity: 65 Liters
  • Dimension: 13.4” x 29.9” x 12.6”
  • Weight: 2.9 lbs.

Rains Texel Duffel Bag

Torben wearing the Rains Texel Duffel, a unisex multifunctional bag.

Where to buy Rains Texel Duffel Bag:

The waterproof, backpack capable Rains Texel Duffel Bag is as stylish as it is versatile. While the smaller 34L works really well as a gym bag for the yoga studio, the larger option makes for a great weekender, travel duffle. It can stay upright almost anywhere, making it easy to grab and carry with its multiple handles and design .

It features a reinforced bottom with Rains’ signature soft DWR PU material on the upper. Rains has done a good job of improving the sustainability profile of their production and sourcing too.

The Texel’s main compartment is large and it has several mesh pockets inside and out. It is a good multi-purpose solution at a lower price than one might expect from this company. Not much for organization, but it hits home on style and water protection.

  • Material: 100% polyester with polyurethane coating
  • Capacity: 56 liters / 14.8 gallons
  • Dimensions: H34 x W62 x D34cm / H13.4 x W24.4 x D13.4 inches
  • Weight: 1260 gr / 2.77 pounds
  • Waterproof rating: W3 – Waterproof protection from light rain

Jack Wolfskin

Jack Wolfskin 65L Expedition Trunk

Jack Wolfskin Expedition Trunk 65 Side View On Field

Where to buy Jack Wolfskin 65L Expedition Trunk:

We in continental America live in a bit of a vacuum of influence when it comes to our outdoor equipment. Occasionally, I’ll have the chance to take a look at gear from European manufacturers- in this case it’s Jack Wolfskin’s 65L Expedition Trunk, a sensibly priced alternative to “adventure duffles” employed by travelers and explorers alike.

This heavy-hitting German retailer has one foot in the outdoor sporting world and another in urban “athleisure” wear. A closer look at the trunk reveals it’s firmly rooted in this dichotomy- taking aim somewhere between an overbuilt gear bag and a versatile valise. For a weekend at the cabin or living out of it for weeks at a time, the duffle certainly merits further investigation.

  • Stowable padded shoulder straps
  • Large and lockable D-zip
  • Reinforced webbing carrying handles
  • External gear loops
  • 3 Meshed internal compartments
  • Water-resistant external pocket
  • 1680D fabric construction

Osprey Transporter 65L

osprey-transporter-65l-9

Where to buy Osprey Transporter 65L:

The Osprey Transporter duffel doesn’t have too many features that separate it from other options. The best features of this pack are easily the u-zip opening and the solid quality of the zippers and shoulder straps.

I tested the 65-liter variant on a 14-day sailing and camping voyage, plus other smaller weekend trips. It proved to be a robust bag that protects against some considerable abuse (read review) as well as rain.

It’s a moderately expensive bag that returns substantial returns in experience measured by potential days of use and protection.

  • Material: 840D Nylon TPU Double Coated
  • Volume: 65L
  • Dimensions: 23.6 X 14.2 X 12.6 inches
  • Weight: 3.1 pounds

Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler 60

eagle-creek-cargo-hauler-featured-image

Where to buy Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler 60:

A solid and practical duffel backpack is the Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler.

Tested against conditions that get it dirty, sat on and tossed about, the 60 liter Cargo Hauler we used several times did well. With a robust construction using Bi-Tech™ Armor Lite fabric, this duffel is water-resistant and can handle frequent travel.

The bag features versatile carrying options, including padded backpack straps, top handles, and side grab handles for easy maneuverability.

  • Best Suited For: Hiking, Day Trips, Camping, Weekend trips
  • Material: 600D TPU, 1000D Helix™ Poly Twill
  • Volume: 60L
  • Dimensions: 26.75 x 10.25 x 13.5 inches
  • Weight: 2.3 pounds

Stubble & Co

Stubble & Co. The Kit Bag Duffel

stubble-and-co-kit-bag-back-profile

Where to buy Stubble & Co. The Kit Bag Duffel:

This bag stays true to the Stubble & Co signature phrase ‘go anywhere, do everything.’

The Kit by Stubble & Co comes at 38L and is not a typical gym bag .

Its versatile hybrid character is its top-selling point. It can be carried as a backpack and by removing the shoulder straps, you are left with a sleek, stylish duffel for a weekend escape or a carry-on , all in one.

For an above-average but more than reasonable price, you get multiple pockets, a padded laptop sleeve and a separate shoe compartment protected by Stubble’s durable and sustainable fabrics.

  • Material: Recycled 200D & 900D PET & TPU fabrics, water-resistant zips, vegan-friendly
  • Capacity: 10 gallons / 38L
  • Dimensions: 21.26 x 8.66 x 13.77 inches / 54 x 22 x 35 cm
  • Weight: 3.3 lbs / 1.5 kg
  • Waterproof rating: Waterproof, suitable for light rain

Why Trust This Guide

The primary reviewer of this guide, yours truly, has extensive experience with duffel bags. I used to spell it “duffle” while I was canoe tripping and sailing. Not until I started systematically testing bags 5 years ago, did I understand what Dernier means and how to value some of the more subtle features of these bags.

As is revealed in the image below, I sail two weeks on an open 72-foot viking ship with 30-40 others, each bringing along one or more duffle bags. During these 14 days, I prod and pry at their bags and at the owners, peppering them with questions about their experience.

Lately, I’ve found it helpful for this guide to lend them duffel bags and enlist their views. The authority of this guide is, therefore, based on a community of research and plenty of data. Most of them are survivalists.

the-north-face-base-camp-duffel-bags

Building on the foundation of testing at sea (saltwater) and camping on land, the duffels have been tested for water protection and features quantitatively and qualitatively respectively.

To measure water protection, the bags were placed outside in the rain for 30 minutes and measured for how much water seeped in.

duffel-bag-water-protection-test-results

Continuing some of our stress-testing and probing for any weak points in construction, we took turns with different packs in the shower, pointing the water at the closed zippers to see how well those seams protected the contents from splashes or rain.

This simulates a bag that’s been put on its side, something that I’ve experienced a lot during camping and sailing trips.

Additional testing for any weakness in water protection at the seams and zippers

Choosing the Right Size Duffel for the Price

Duffel bags come in various sizes, from compact 30L models ideal for gym use to spacious 100L options perfect for extended trips.

Popular choices include the 71L North Face Base Camp and the 60L Gregory Alpaca. Consider your needs and budget, as prices vary from stylish options like the Rains Texel at $170 to premium models like the Peak Design 65L at $169.

Evaluate your gear requirements to select the best duffel bag that offers optimal capacity and value for your investment.

duffel-bags-by-price-capacity

What is a Duffel Bag

Duffel bags were originally designed to give you the possibility to carry your gym gear and travel-related items in one safe and secure place. They were also used utilized for storing the same pieces in a dust-free and moisture-free place. As more and more brands started releasing their versions of duffel bags, their purpose became more diverse than ever.

Rock-climbing amateurs along with avid world travelers and extreme sports fanatics started purchasing duffel packs that would meet their particular needs. Nowadays they are the go-to accessory that every other person has in their wardrobe regardless of the leisure activity he or she dives in every now and again. This means that you will certainly find the right model of the duffel bag from the 20 items we reviewed in this guide.

Take into consideration factors like purpose, size, features, and price, and you will be able to narrow down your list to just one model that fits your requirements the best.

Backpack Duffel Designs

Backpack duffel designs combine the convenience of a backpack with the spaciousness of a duffel bag, making them a versatile choice for travelers and adventurers. These hybrid bags are designed to offer the best of both worlds, with features that cater to a variety of needs.

One of the primary advantages of backpack duffels is their versatility. They can be carried on the back, allowing for hands-free movement, or by their handles, like a traditional duffel. This makes them ideal for situations where you need to switch between carrying styles, such as navigating through airports or hiking to a campsite.

Dernier Explained

The numbers standing next to the word ‘Denier’ are commonly used to showcase the durability of the item from the material’s point of view. Always expressed by a number with a “D” at the end. The higher the number is, the more long-lasting the duffel bag (in our case) is.

It is essential to remember that deniers of the same value may still vary in quality depending on the type of used fabric. But that is a good measure to look out for when choosing one bag from the big crowd of bags. Don’t be alarmed by the two values the denier some manufacturers can mention for some particular bags. Usually, the higher one refers to the bottom part of the bag’s fabric, whereas the lower one refers to the top part of the bag’s fabric.

What should you keep in your grab bag or panic bag on a long voyage?

  • Elaine Bunting
  • September 23, 2015

If you’re planning a long cruise or an ocean crossing, it is essential that you consider your grab bag. What goes in, and what to leave out? Elaine Bunting investigates

yachting bags

Panic bags, or grab bags if you prefer, are the collection of essentials that we all ardently hope will languish unused in a locker. Nonetheless, they are an essential part of voyage preparation.

Curious to know what exactly skippers store in their grab bag, particularly for transocean voyages where rescue could be days or more away, we conducted a straw poll of long-term skippers. Most were able to give a complete and immediate account of the contents.

Typically, contents divide into roughly five areas: equipment for basic survival; items that could help bring about rescue or for when you get rescued; navigation aids; first aid and medicines; food and water; and what could loosely be termed ‘entertainment’. Each crew’s kit is individual and although all had common denominators there was a fair degree of personalisation.

When itemising grab bag contents most of those we asked started with equipment that would help them get rescued. An EPIRB, handheld VHF radio , flares, dye markers, signalling mirror, whistle and flashlight were included and, in two cases, a strobe light.

In addition, some listed an inflatable radar reflector, although ISAF-approved liferafts include a reflector.

A good idea from Robert Flane is to include a spare battery for an Iridium phone, if you have one. His phone lives at the navstation, he says, and is high up on the list of things to grab if ever he has to abandon his yacht.

No less important, particularly for those in coastal waters, is equipment to take in case you are rescued. Photocopies of ship’s documents, visas and passports were recommended, for example, or the originals themselves, and a few said they added cash and credit cards to a container.

When you take to the liferaft you will not have time to rummage around for what you need

When you take to the liferaft you will not have time to rummage around for what you need

The basic requirement of food and water obviously varied depending on how far from land crews were going to be and how many were on board, but in general quantities were generous.

“Our grab bag does not contain any food or water. They go in separate bags,” says Robert Flane. Mark and Anne Jones, who are doing a similar extended cruise, replied: “Our second grab bag contains food, including tins of fruit, corn beef, rice pudding, milk, sardines, can opener, tortillas and sweets.”

Most have plenty of water ready to go from a supply of jerrycans or bottles stashed separately. A number suggested a manually operated watermaker. These are hard work for a small quantity, however, and I was surprised nobody mentioned a solar still, which does the work for no effort.

Besides food and water, the lists included thermal blankets, hats, survival suits, a bailer and puncture repair kit for the liferaft, and some people also added a survival manual.

First-hand accounts of survival, such as Maurice and Marilyn Bailey’s 117 Days Adrift or Steve Callahan’s Adrift , are shockingly instructive: they would never have survived without the fish and turtles they caught. You definitely should include fishing kit sufficient to give you repeated success, with enough lures and line to allow for losses.

Grab_bag_contents

Robert Flane recommends a wire leader and box of lures. Two other skippers add a ‘square of timber’ or ‘a small chopping board’ for gutting fish. And you need a knife, of course.

A couple of people noted they would take a spear gun for fishing. If you happened to have one aboard – bearing in mind that spear gun fishing is prohibited in many places – it would certainly be worth its weight, provided you could devise a safe way of transporting and stowing it in a liferaft. Steve Callahan, who survived for 76 days before being rescued, said he owed his life to his. He had taken it simply because it was lying close to his grab bag.

Top of everyone’s list, not surprisingly, is a handheld GPS and spare batteries. Robert Flane says his is stored in a biscuit tin, a precautionary Faraday cage in case his boat is hit by lightning.

Besides this, a basic chart can be included as well as a pencil and paper and a simple plastic compass.

Medical supplies

Most people pack a few basics from the first aid kit, with the addition of seasickness tablets, antibiotics, painkillers, sunblock and lip salve, plus petroleum jelly for anointing saltwater boils.

Crewmembers’ personal medication needs to come along as well. One unusual suggestion was an enema – ‘the body can take in moisture in more ways than one’.

Ready to go

Most grab bags are redundant flare containers, which are ideal in that they are light, watertight and easily portable. So long as you don’t overfill each one, they should also float, but check before you make any assumptions!

An ‘ocean’ inventory of kit probably won’t fit into one container. In that case, it may be a good idea to split it up, with items suitable for coastal in one and kit for longer voyages in another. That way, you wouldn’t have to lug a big container into a liferaft if you were only passagemaking.

Several people we consulted also kept food and water separate so they could be renewed and reviewed regularly.

To avoid confusion, mark them clearly. Mark Jones recommends listing on the container extra items to pack.

Packing a liferaft and grab bag

“During the course of the last ten years people’s thought processes have definitely changed with regard to what they get when they purchase/hire a liferaft,” says Alistair Hackett of Southampton-based company Ocean Safety.

Alistair Hackett

“The international introduction of the ISO9650 liferaft standard has helped standardise the pack contents and therefore people have a better understanding of what is inside the pack and its limitations.

“At Ocean Safety we actively offer owners/skippers and crews the opportunity to come and look at their liferafts when they are serviced so they get the chance to look at its contents and make informed decisions what extra kit they may wish to add into the raft or into a grab bag.”

He adds: “Grab bags are becoming more and more popular because there is no restriction on size and quantity and they are also easier to manage. As liferaft service periods get extended it is becoming easier to manage expiry dates of products when in a grab bag than in the raft. They can clearly also be personalised and apart from the obvious survival items we are seeing more people asking for items such as these:”

  • Spare glasses
  • Copies of passports and credit cards
  • Personal medicines
  • Condoms (to be used for water collection!)
  • Hand-operated watermakers
  • Emergency VHF radios (these units have special batteries which don’t require to be kept charged)

Hackett says it is important to make sure a grab bag is readily to hand, that all the crew know where it is, and that that you know what is in it: “Have a plan how you would use what is in it and make sure your crew know what the plan is!”

Miscellaneous kit

There were lots of ideas from our poll for miscellaneous useful items to pack, and most of them were cheap and lightweight. Here is a list of items suggested:

  • Lengths of line or string
  • Waterproof torch(es)
  • Needles and twine
  • Ziploc plastic bags
  • Chemical heat packs
  • Rubber gloves
  • Swimming goggles
  • Pack of cards

The above are all self-explanatory, with the possible exception of the pack of cards. Again, this is not as daft as it may sound. The Baileys kept up their morale and fortitude – one of the main reasons they survived so long – by inventing games to keep their minds occupied, and to take them off near-starvation. Marilyn Bailey kept inventories; Maurice Bailey sketched ideas for the design of his new boat, and both kept diaries.
