Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Shoal draft version: draft = 3.83’/1.17m.

I am interested in the Hunter 306 as well as the Feeling 29 DI; I am really interested in the Hunter 306, for traveling between Maui and back to California. From what I have read regarding the Hunter 306, it’s a very good boat, but they fail to mention if it was sea worthy, and not just for cruising the coast. It’s defiantly big enough for a few friends and myself from time to time. Also I can’t find a price range for her, does anyone know what the basic price would be for a brand new Hunter 306?

To make trips like that in a production boat I would opt for a Pacific Seacraft or and Island Packet. Thw Hunter is a very nice inshore to inland cruser I have no opinion on the Feelings but freom the weight and the fact that it sounds like a swing keel I would look for a full keeled boat. I think you can still find afew Pacific Seacraft 31s But boats of this caliber aren''t cheep..

You can find base prices on the Hunter website. As to sailing a suh a price point, value boat to Hawaii, take a look at the story: http://www.equipped.org/0698rescue.htm (thanks to whomever put this link up a few months ago - it''s a great read...). I''d put my money on the Catalina 36 in a sec. Cobraman, I gotta say, that you suggest such a trip in either of these boats hints you might want to get some more daysailing in before you consider overnighting...

Cobraman and Sailingfool: (Surely, first names aren''t that risky or time consuming to use on these posts...) I think I''m the one who posted the URL on the Catalina that didn''t make it to Hawaii. I''m not terribly keen on that being a sole reference to the question of taking a high-volume ''factory boat'' like a Catalina to Hawaii as it was a very early C36 and even had a steering failure resulting from poor design which Catalina subsequently modified. A hatch that tore off was also underspec''d for that kind of passage, something I''m guessing (hoping, perhaps) Catalina''s CE rating process would now catch and not permit to happen (altho'' there is no guarantee of this when buying a Catalina on the American market). I guess what I''m saying is that, if we''re going to look at a failed C36 attempt to reach Hawaii when commenting on Cobraman''s plans, then we should also acknowledge the same boat model (C36) has won its class on the same passage (in the West Marine Pacific Cup) and also been singlehanded & multi-crewed multiple times in the same race over the last decade. (Remember: each of these boats must also be returned to the West Coast, a different kind of passage, once the race is completed). Having said all that, I think you (Cobraman) need to be especially careful as you move down in size and contemplate an ocean passage, as smaller boats (perhaps the Hunter 306 fits this caution perfectly) are even less intentionally designed and built to the strength needed for an ocean passage. E.g. there''s a Hunter 290 across from me right now and, as I inspected its marginal rig the other day (it''s sailed along the English Channel on occasion, which is what peeked my interest), I can say it must take a very brave or naive person to cross an ocean in this boat. Also, keep in mind there''s a lot of off-wind work going over and I keep hearing expressed regrets about using the B&R rig in downwind sailing because of mainsail chafe and not being able to boom out and vang down the sail appropriately for the course one needs to sail. (I will refrain from commenting on the absence of a backstay in such conditions - offshore, in a big sea, with convective weather common at times - except to remind potential Hunter shoppers that the B&R rig was chosen so that Hunter could REDUCE the mast cross section and strength (diameter) of the rigging wire, not to utilize its advantages to make it stronger). Re: Feeling centerboard boats, I would encourage you to try and find some BB''s in Western Europe, and also track down the UK distributor (who speaks English). Feeling yachts are much more common over here (tho'' not anywhere near the big brands) and you''d likely find useful information by inquiring about them among W Europeans. Good luck on the search! Jack

Wow, thanks for all of the info, I will be very careful in my research. I am surprised that a C36 did not make it to Hawaii. After talking to my girlfriend about this, we decided that we are going to look into a Hunter 466, but that is getting alittle out of our price range, but never the less, we still want to look into it. Does anyone now how the Hunter 466 handles on the sea? The info from their web site says that its sea worthy.

Cobraman, If you,ve got the means to consider a hunter 466 why then don,t you consider something like a pre-owned Swan or Sabre or somthing else with proven seaworthyness. To me (and alot of other sailors)I wouldn''t even take a hunter out of the bay! Why are you so surprised to hear that a Catalina didn''t make it to Hawaii?? Don''t forget thats it''s far more important to have the skill, experiance and knowlage to go open ocean voyaging than to just have a boat that is seaworthy. Dennis

306 Having been the owner of the 290 Hunter and loving it I don't see it as a ocean crossing boat. I would not try anything but coastal cruising with a 306,I like Hunters and now own a Hunter 36 and still would not cross a ocean only because I am not a ocean crossing kind of guy.

Hunter 306 New Owner Questions

  • Ask A Hunter Owner

Hi, first post on this forum! After years of trailer yachts we've recently imported a 2004 (MY2005) H306 from the US to Australia and while the boat has arrived in great shape, I thought I'd consult the brains trust here on a few things. We don't get as many Hunters as Catalinas in Australia, not sure why - the cruisy comfort, fractional B&R rig, in-mast furling and arch made it a no-contest for our daysailing/weekender tastes. We stumbled across a very tired and mouldy H290 here (while looking at a Catalina) and while we didn't want a "project" boat, we fell in love with the design. Must say the thorough manual, this forum and available parts were also very comforting factors in our decision. The internal teak is generally in good shape but showing a few areas of wear that seem common in many Hunters of this vintage. Have you followed the manual's recommendation for re-finishing (spray) or gone a different way with something like a brushed polyurethane finish? The head has a large splodge of DIY silicone just above floor level between the sink cabinet base and toilet (near the corner). Before I go digging in there to find out, is there anything under there that might have made the previous owner go hunting in that area? Are there any notorious leak areas or weak spots on these boats we should be aware of and fix before we re-launch? Thanks for any guidance, we are extremely excited to get the boat in the water once we put it back together. It really ticks all the boxes for our needs. Robert Melbourne, Australia

Congratulations! Regarding the interior Teak we had some fading from UV in some areas. We looked into it and found the supplier of the finish materials - Mohawk. We actually found a distributor and bought some. We tried a small patch and didn't really like the results and I'm sorry I don't remember why. At my wife's suggestion we used liquid gold which produced a nice tone and finish. Yes, we had to re-apply but it was easy to do. Don't sand it. How was the boat delivered to Australia?

Sorry, one more question - where will I find the emergency tiller? I see where it fits if I ever need to use it, but no mention of where it is stored in the manual that I can see. Thanks again.

the splodge is in a spot that is a common moulding defect in the glass - you end up with a thin layer of gelcoat on the mold, a void, and then the underlying glass in the corner. the thin gelcoat breaks leaving an open "wound", cosmetic but a dirt collector. normally just an easy gelcoat repair but who knows what the PO did...

Arbee said: Thanks for the welcome! I should add the boat had an out of the water survey before we purchased her and these are just nit picky issues. The boat reports to be otherwise in very good shape. Here are a couple of pics: a) the DIY silicon "splodge" on the edge of the head floor, top right of photo. It didn't get a mention in the survey report, probably just cosmetic damage but thought I should check here first in case there is some awareness of what might lurk within. View attachment 171811 and b) the typical aging teak finish issues (this is not our boat but provides an exaggeration of our issue). View attachment 171812 Thanks for any input at all, much appreciated. Robert Click to expand

Congratulations on your purchase. The interior looks very similar to my H335.paper I have refinished most of the interior wood. Everybody has their own recipe but this is what I have done and it looks good 2 years later. For the nav table surface, I sanded it with 400 paper with a vibrating sander. Based on your picture, I think it will still look a bit mottled (light and dark) when you are finished. The I used wipe on TUNG oil (not teak) from Min Wax. I applied 2 - 3 coats depending on the desired color. I let it sit longer on the light parts before wiping off. Then on the flat surface like the nav table I use the Minwax wipe on poly. 3 coats. For the sides, I sand if needed and use Tung oil only. For the sole, I removed any varnish with a varnish remover. You need to clean with soap really well. The "gray color" is dirt. Then I sanded with perhaps 200 then 400 and again used 3 coats of Tung oil. For the floors I found the most success with the brush on polyurethane. Best of luck. PS. if I could take the wood off the boat and do it at my house, it was much easier and faster. Although it could take a few days to coat everything.

Paul at Triton’s is a good friend whom we respected each other

I'm back; finally! The boat arrived too close to Christmas for the trades to finish the main hull and rigging refurb but all done now and we have the boat happily in its long term berth (attached). The three blade prop gave me a good introduction to prop walk while trying to reverse in (only outboard trailer yacht experience previously) but we made some amused but very experienced new friends and helpers in the process. We live and learn! The space and layout of this boat in a compact 29 foot hull length is truly remarkable, we love it. I'm about to tackle the "silicon splodge" and will report back on that. I also have a can of Mohawk spray lacquer on its way to patch the teak cabin trim and galley fiddles. The hull liner is in great condition but a little yellowed and "grubby" in places, especially around the cushion edges. We've carefully tried a few household products with modest success but please do let me know if you've discoverd the magic product. The next step is to find a gentle day to try out the sails and make sure the furling main and headsail operate as expected. We've only motored her so far but we're more sailors at heart so keen to get acquainted with how the boat handles. We also have a cruising assym spinnaker that we're looking forward to on the right day. Anyway, just dropped back to say hi in the midst of this virus madness and look forward to become one of the more experienced Hunter forum members. Cheers, Robert

Thanks @Arbee for sharing your story. Congrats on the boat. Keep us in the loop with tour refit projects. fair winds.

Robert, We have exactly the same model year of the 306 (purchased in October 2004, MY2005), so if you have any questions, I'd be glad to try to help. For the past couple of weeks, and probably for the next month or so, I'm out working on the boat most days, so it's easy for me to take pictures or whatever. Jay

Arbee said: Thanks Jay, I really appreciate the offer. Stepping up from a trailer yacht, there are many systems to fully learn and understand. I've noticed already that the owner's manual is not always accurate (e.g. the thru-hulls are in different places to the diagram). Click to expand
