And the buttstock?

It’s beautiful. Both it and the fore end are made of a classic, burled maple design, meaning this gun will fit right in with grandpa’s as you go out into the woods together.

4  Stevens 555 – Best Low Cost .410 Shotgun

I’m a fan of Savage Arms. If you’re looking for an economically-priced gun that can perform, I’ve found one that they fit the bill perfectly. You don’t have to have two months’ rent to drop on one of their firearms, meaning that they’re within the reach of the common man.

The Stevens 555 .410 is an example of this company trait. For less than a grand, this best affordable .410 over-under shotgun can be added to your gun cabinet as it awaits the next day of squirrel hunting. You get a 38” carbon steel barrel here (two of them. This is an over-under design), a 3” chamber, and five chokes when you pick up this gun.

Lots of options…

There are a couple of different versions of the 555 out there, but the baseline models feature extractors rather than ejectors. Personally, I prefer ejectors, but it is what it is. If you want a 555 with ejectors, you’re going to have to pick up a 555E for the ‘enhanced’ model.

This is still a great all-around gun, though. A simple, no-frills, over-under design that will allow you to hang out with your skeet-shooting buddies on the cheap.

• Rather light, meaning it can have a bit of recoil sometimes (depending on the load).

5  The Mossberg 500 .410 – Best Budget .410 Shotgun

Any discussion of shotguns would be remiss should it not mention the Mossberg 500. Having been around for decades, this time-tested design shows every indication of being around for much, much longer.

A number of chamberings are available for this very inexpensive gun (typically costing as much as an entry-level AR-15), but they are all superb. Proof of the reliability of this weapon is the fact that it has passed the Mil-Spec 3443E test , where the gun is required to shoot 3000 rounds of buckshot without more than three malfunctions, and no breakage.

Understandably, it has a few minor issues…

The .410 model is chambered specifically for 3” shells, relatively easy to come across. No gun is perfect, however, and the Remington 500 is no exception to the rule. The safety can be a bit stiff on some guns, and many shooters have noted that the trigger pull on this shotgun is a tad tighter than would be preferred. Due to the lightness of the gun, the recoil on this shotgun can be more than one would hope for as well.

That being said, it’s hard to beat the quality you get with such an inexpensive shotgun , and for those who are not a fan of the safety, trigger, or butt pad of the Mossberg 500, there are a wide host of aftermarket upgrades available for this particular gun.

UW-River Falls to celebrate its 150-year anniversary

Numerous events set throughout the academic year.

Aug. 26, 2024 - In 1897, 23 years after the founding of the University of Wisconsin-River Falls (known then as the State Normal School), the university’s one building was destroyed by fire. 

Remarkably, only a half day of classes was missed when local churches, lodge rooms and other meeting spaces were utilized to serve as classrooms.

School employees and River Falls residents then rallied to keep the Normal School in the location where it began, offsetting efforts to move it elsewhere. They were successful, and only nine months after the original building was destroyed, a new one, now known as South Hall, stood in its place. 

That determined mindset is symbolic of UWRF’s commitment to provide life-changing educational opportunities for students from the St. Croix River Valley and elsewhere since the university was established in 1874. To recognize that spirit and all that UWRF has meant to River Falls, the region, the state and beyond, the university will celebrate its 150th anniversary throughout the 2024-25 academic year. 

“UW-River Falls has a long track record of having a tremendous impact on this region, on Wisconsin and beyond,” Chancellor Maria Gallo said during Monday’s opening meeting that marks the beginning of the upcoming academic year. “One hundred and fifty years is an important milestone, and our university is excited to celebrate its important history throughout this year.”

Multiple events will commemorate the university’s founding, among them:

• A UWRF employee medallion hunt where participants follow clues to locate the medallion on campus. Thanks to a UWRF donor, the winner will receive River Falls Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Bureau “Chamber Bucks” valued at $250, money intended to support the River Falls community. Chamber Bucks are honored at any Chamber-member business.
• Following the annual homecoming parade on Saturday, Oct. 5, UWRF will host a 150th anniversary tailgate party at David Smith Stadium at Ramer Field. The event begins at 11:30 a.m. and features a performance by UWRF student Hailey James, an award-winning singer, songwriter and recording artist. 
• Next spring, as part of the closing ceremony for the sesquicentennial celebration, university officials will open a time capsule buried in 1975 and originally located near the former Hagestad Student Center. The time capsule was excavated and preserved in fall 2022 when Hagestad was demolished to make way for the Science and Technology Innovation Center (SciTech) now under construction.

Nizhny Novgorod Oblast is a federal subject of Russia located in the central part of European Russia, in the Volga Federal District. Nizhny Novgorod is the capital city of the region.

The population of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast is about 3,144,000 (2022), the area - 76,624 sq. km.

Nizhny Novgorod Oblast - Features

Nizhny Novgorod Oblast is one of the largest regions of Central Russia. The length of the region from north to south is about 400 km, from west to east - about 300 km. The largest rivers in the European part of Russia flow through the region - the Volga and the Oka.

The largest cities are Nizhny Novgorod (1,234,000), Dzerzhinsk (225,500), Arzamas (102,600), Sarov (96,100), Bor (76,300), Kstovo (66,500), Pavlovo (55,300), Vyksa (52,500), Balakhna (47,200).

The climate of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast is temperate continental climate. The average temperature in January is minus 12 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 19 degrees Celsius. Winter lasts from early November to late March.

There are deposits of peat, phosphorites, iron ores. There is a large deposit of titanium and zirconium ores in the basin of the Pyana River, one of the five largest deposits of titanium and zirconium in Russia. Forests cover about 53% of the territory.

The main industries are engineering, metalworking, chemical and petrochemical industries, forestry, woodworking and paper industries. Machine-building and metal working industries produce trucks and cars, buses, automobile parts, river and sea ships, automobile and ship motors, planes, tools, gadgets, instruments, equipment for chemical, light, food industries, TV-sets etc. Art handicrafts are developed (Khokhloma and Gorodets painting).

The following crops are grown: rye, oats, barley, wheat, buckwheat, sugar beets. Potatoes and onions are grown too. Meat and milk cattle-, pig- and poultry-breeding are developed. Gorky Railway passes through the territory of the region. The rivers of Volga, Oka, Vetluga, Sura are navigable.

Attractions of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast

A lot of architectural monuments can be found in the capital city of the region - Nizhny Novgorod (Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Stroganov Church, Staroyarmarochny Cathedral, and others).

Nizhny Novgorod Oblast has several unique natural objects : Kerzhensky reserve, Ichalkovsky reserve, Vadskoe Lake and Lake Svetloyar (according to legend, the mythical town of Kitezh is situated at the bottom of this lake).

Boldino State Literary-Memorial and Natural Museum-Reserve of A.S. Pushkin is located in the village of Bolshoye Boldino. A.S.Pushkin, the most famous Russian poet, lived and worked there.

On the left bank of the Oka River, near the city of Dzerzhinsk, a unique architectural monument is located: 128 meter steel hyperboloid tower constructed by the engineer V.G.Shukhov in 1929. This tower was used as a power support across the river.

In the town of Vyksa , on the territory of the Vyksa Metallurgical Plant, you can find unique monuments of industrial architecture and technical art. They were also constructed by V.G.Shukhov at the end of the 19th century.

The city of Arzamas is rich in architectural monuments. The Cathedral of the Resurrection (1814-1842), located on Cathedral Square, is the most famous one.

In Gorodets , one of the oldest Russian settlement in the Middle Volga, founded in the 2nd half of the 12th century, there are museums dedicated to handicrafts and craftsmanship, life and history of the peoples of the Volga region.

Holy Trinity-Makarievo-Zheltovodsky Convent is located on the left bank of the Volga, in Lyskovsky district, near the village of Makarievo. It was founded in the first half of the 15th century. Diveyevo Convent , located near the town of Sarov, is a place of pilgrimage for the Orthodox. The relics of St. Seraphim of Sarov are placed in the Trinity Cathedral of the convent.
