Jutson Marine Design

Seas the day..

 • Story: Tim Pawsey

It has been about a decade since Scott Jutson decamped from his hometown of Sydney for Vancouver . Jutson, an award-winning yacht designer who had made a name for himself in the cut-throat, competitive Australian racing community, traded one continent for another and elected to settle on the West Coast with his family, where he now operates Jutson Marine Design.

He recalls those heady days Down Under in the 1980s and ‘90s. “It was a buoyant time,” he says. “Australia had just won the America’s Cup, and there was a can-do, world-beating attitude down there.” Jutson had started out by designing high-performance racing sailboats, including much celebrated 18-foot skiffs that catered to what he describes as “a mad boat racing culture, all wildly out of control in the harbour.” The vessels soon increased in size and stature, with projects ranging from the first carbon monocoque harbour skiff (Colorbond 21) to True Blue, the remarkable, record-shattering 50-foot yacht built with David Adams, whose 1994 to ‘95 voyage shattered the BOC solo round the world record by 10 days. Perhaps his most celebrated design, the 79-foot maxi-yacht Brindabella, was first across the line in the ultra-challenging Sydney-to-Hobart race of ‘97, before embarking on a string of record-breaking wins. She remains one of the fastest in her class.

By the end of the 1990s, the demand for that style of vessel was drying up, says Jutson, who began to apply the values of macro design learned in crafting racing vessels to other areas. First came sailing catamarans, but eventually the designer transitioned to powered vessels. “Power boats are relatively crude,” he says. “You dial in engine size and so on. But racing sailboats are very refined, where even a minute tweak might result in two seconds a mile.” It may not sound like much, Jutson explains, “however, when you multiply that over the 640 miles between Sydney and Hobart, that’s enough for a margin of victory.” He says he was looking for a new direction—“one that truly appealed and would offer some positive reasons to exist.”

Luxury powered vessels are notorious for their large wakes, grotesque fuel consumption, and severe rolling and discomfort in rough seas, says Jutson—all challenges that he found highly appealing, and which acted as fodder for his quest in developing the ideal, powered catamaran hull and platform. He frames the design process as one of problem solving. “I deal with ideas that people have,” he explains. “Often they’re very experienced clients who really know what’s involved in long-distance cruising. And they understand what it takes for your family to be comfortable. I have to resolve those issues. And every project is different.” Jutson’s state-of-the-art catamaran hull and platforms more than address those key issues of ride quality and low wave-making, and yield significant improvements of fuel economy—so much so that commercial demand is also on the rise, especially given fuel savings that can amount to 25 per cent over conventional monohull designs.

One current project close to Jutson’s heart is the development of a prototype 50-passenger electric ferry to link West Vancouver with downtown. A similar design is already underway in Juneau, Alaska. Jutson says it’s past time we addressed our chronic congestion problem, and cites our ocean-side setting as part of an obvious solution now being ignored. “Unlike cities like London, New York, San Francisco, and Auckland, Vancouver stands out in its lack of water utilization as a transport link,” says the designer, who notes that the SeaBus taps only a small part of the potential. “I’d love to see a ferry cutting across the harbour. Even more so if it’s clean and electric.”

Jutson estimates the cost of such a ferry to be around $1 million, which he notes, in mass transit terms, is not a lot of money. “We have docks everywhere: the city owns a dock in Harbour Green which is just sitting there unused,” he says. “These kinds of ferries are not a big deal. They can be a small but efficient part of the solution.” As for pursuing his passion for sailing in local waters? “It’s not really the same,” Jutson politely understates, noting: “In Sydney, it’s almost inevitable you’ll be on a sailboat a couple of days a week.” But he does get a big chuckle that one of his earliest successes, from 1987, the 40-foot catamaran Dragonfly, has also moved to the Pacific Northwest. In fact, she convincingly won the Swiftsure International Yacht Race in 2000 and 2001—and continues to hold the record.

If you haven't seen this Luxury cat on the water then you won't see any others as this is the only Australian built Scott Jutson design that made it to this side of the globe.. Designed to fulfill a clients wish list this boat was the beginnings of the Meridian Power Cat Line in Australia. Taking almost 19000 man hours to build this is one of the best documented custom Motor Cats under 50 feet. Drawings, construction notes and a complete picture documentary of the build were all saved with this boat. Design features and systems most people dream about are found throughout this cat and even though it is now 20 years old its easy to see she was well ahead of her time. The fiberglass, epoxy, kevlar, foam layup makes it a stout quiet cat that the Australians are known for. On the inside wood appointments throughout make this boat a big step above most other catamarans in her class. With 48000 BTUs of air conditioning coming from two units its pretty easy to stay as cool as the boat looks. Add the dual master stateroom lay out, one in each hull and you have a serious cruising machine where four adults can stretch out and get comfortable.

This yacht can be operated from three separate locations. Inside helm station, Fly bridge helm station with full controls, portable bow station with throttle and autopilot controls.

Every where you look there are features that you usually don't find :

Child/pet gates to keep them safely off the swim platforms while under way

Stainless steel drawer inserts

Removable laptop work station on passenger wheel house seat

Pompanette Patnium Series Captain's Chair and companion seats

Separate drinking faucet with filter at every sink

Walk in engine rooms with easy access on all sides of the main engines

Fuel primers for fuel filter changes

Storage every place there was room to put it

The list is long

The skinny 3'3" draft coupled to a low 16' 5" bridge clearance and a 780 gallon fuel capacity makes this a great boat for those who want to do the loop in Catamaran style and comfort.

Incredible Fuel economy and range:

1800 RPMs = 5 gph @ 8.2 knots = 1280 nm range

2000 RPMs = 7 gph @ 9.0 knots = 1003 nm range

2500 RPMs = 12.4 gph @ 10.4 knots = 652 nm range

3000 RPMs = 18.2 gph @ 15.8 knots = 674 nm range

3300 RPMs = 28 gph @ 18.8 knots = 524 nm range

With a complete top side and hull paint in 2017 she shows well above average both on the exterior and iinterior.

Bottom paint was completed at the Endeavour yard in St Pete in January of 2019

Completely serviced with detailed engine rooms and all systems working makes this cat ready to go anywhere.

Many service records and major receipts back to new along with the complete documentation of her build

You really have to step aboard to appreciate the layout and roominess this cat provides for her 46 foot length and under 20' beam. If you don't mind getting noticed there is nothing else like this design.

Shipbuilder Metal Shark said it has delivered a new excursion vessel to Southwest Florida tour and charter boat operator Pure Florida.

Sea Flight is a custom 40’ x 14’ welded aluminum foil-assisted catamaran designed and built to USCG Subchapter “T” standards and configured to carry up to 33 passengers.

Designed by Jutson Marine Design, the vessel features a foil-assisted catamaran hull delivering unsurpassed performance, economy, and ride comfort, the builder said. Specially engineered forward and aft transverse hydrofoils elevate the hull at planing speeds to substantially reduce drag, resulting in significantly increased performance and fuel economy with modest power requirements.

Powered by twin 440-horsepower Yanmar 6LY440 diesel engines coupled to Hamilton HJ292 water jets via ZF Marine 280-1 transmissions, Sea Flight cruises at speeds in excess of 30 knots, and boasts a top speed of 40+ knots.

The second Jutson-designed vessel of its type to be built by Metal Shark, Sea Flight’s layout has been optimized to accommodate a range of Pure Florida’s eco tours, dolphin watching cruises and offshore fishing trips..

The vessel has been equipped with bench seating for up to 33 passengers beneath a large aluminum-skinned canopy with roll-up curtain package for weather protection, along with well-placed grab rails, rod holders, beverage holders, tackle storage, live wells, fish boxes and coolers. For night trips, white/red LED lighting has been provided throughout. The vessel has also been equipped with an enclosed head with fresh water sink.

A forward-positioned elevated helm station enclosed within a hybrid pilothouse offers full weather protection and a birds-eye view for the captain while still facilitating access to the passenger deck.

VESSEL REVIEW | Ybor – Foil-equipped catamaran pilot boat to serve Tampa Bay

Best Catamaran Pilot Boat – Ybor (Photo: ACI Boats)

The Tampa Bay Pilots Association has begun operating a new pilot boat to serve clients in nearshore waters off Florida's Gulf Coast.

Designed by Jutson Marine Design of British Columbia in compliance to US Coast Guard Sub-Chapter T regulations, the all-aluminium newbuild has been named Ybor after Ybor City, a popular immigrant neighbourhood located just outside of downtown Tampa.

The boat has an LOA of 35 feet (10.79 metres), a beam of 11 feet (3.35 metres), a draught of 1.9 feet (0.6 metres), and a displacement of 7.8 tons (7.1 tonnes) at full load. The main cabin has individual Bentley Patriot suspension seats for one coxswain and four pilots/passengers while Awlgrip marine paint was used for the interior. D-type rubber in two courses was used for the fendering on the hull for added safety when manoeuvring alongside larger vessels.

Photo: ACI Boats

The boat is notable for being a catamaran, a design that is becoming more widespread among newer vessels being built to perform pilot transfer duties.

"The boat was built as a fast foil assist catamaran," Jutson Marine told Baird Maritime . "It has the ability to maintain speed in a seaway due to reduced vertical acceleration as well as to present a low wake wash when operating near shore or in the vicinity of recreational craft."

The foil assist configuration, which is composed of two hull-mounted hydrofoil "wings," is designed to generate lift to raise the hull higher above the surface. This helps reduce the overall hull resistance, and one effect is the low wake wash generated by the hull as mentioned by the designer. The foil assisted catamaran design is also best optimised around a certain speed range, thereby making it suitable for longer runs on the open water and top speeds of between 30 and 45 knots.

Jutson Marine added that the boat was intended to help the owner address the problems that typically come with operating larger pilot boats.

"Larger vessels require more effort, manning and general cost to operate, so they present a limitation in what the association can do. This vessel overcomes those problems."

Photo: ACI Boats

Ybor is powered by a pair of Yamaha outboard engines that each produce 300 hp (223 kW) with steering assistance provided by a SeaStar Optimus system consisting of pumps and outboard steering cylinders. The outboards drive a pair of stainless steel propellers to enable the boat to reach a maximum speed of 40 knots and cruising speeds of between 28 and 35 knots.

The boat has two fuel tanks, each with capacity for 145 gallons (550 litres) of petrol. The foil assist catamaran design also contributes to fuel efficiency, with a consumption figure of 3.3 litres per nautical mile possible at an economical cruising speed of 30 knots. This then enables the boat to sail for up to 280 nautical miles and still have a 10 per cent fuel reserve.

"We also incorporated interceptor style trim tabs so the engine trim remains at a constant zero degrees to maximise propulsion efficiency," Jutson Marine told Baird Maritime .

The boat's electronics suite includes a Furuno NXT radar, an Icom M596 VHF radio, a SeaStar autopilot, and an Airmar transducer. LED lighting was used for the interior and the Rigid D Series deck floodlights. Power for these systems is supplied by a Northern Lights 5kW generator.

Most of our boat owners might also like to test your boating skills before you take your bareboat charter out on the water. When you charter a yacht with a captain included or add the captain and/or crew as an extra to your sailing adventure, then a certified skipper will be provided.
