How Much Do Superyachts Cost?

my escape yacht owner

When it comes to superyachts, the sky is the limit when it comes to cost.

These luxury vessels come with hefty price tags that can range from anywhere between $30 million to over $400 million.

So, if youre in the market for a superyacht, youre looking at an investment that could easily break the bank.

The cost of a superyacht is driven by a variety of factors, including size, amenities, and customization.

Generally, the larger the yacht, the more expensive it will be.

Superyachts typically range in size from 100 feet to over 200 feet, and they can be as wide as 40 feet.

The bigger the yacht, the more luxurious features and amenities it will have.

Amenities also play a significant role in the cost of a superyacht.

While some owners prefer to keep their yachts out of the public eye, others have made headlines with their extensive amenities.

From swimming pools and helicopter pads to on-board cinemas and spas, the sky is the limit when it comes to customizing a superyacht.

The more amenities a superyacht has, the more expensive it will be.

Finally, customization is another major factor that will drive up the cost of a superyacht.

Many luxury vessels have custom-designed interiors that are tailored to the owners tastes.

From custom furniture and artwork to lighting and audio systems, the cost of a superyacht can quickly escalate depending on the level of customization.

In short, the cost of a superyacht can vary widely depending on its size, amenities, and customization.

While some may be able to get away with spending a few million dollars, others may end up spending hundreds of millions of dollars on their dream yacht.

No matter what your budget is, its important to do your research and find out exactly what youre getting for your money before signing on the dotted line.

Keeping Superyachts Out of the Public Eye

When it comes to owning a superyacht, some owners prefer to keep their vessels out of the public eye.

Understandably, these individuals are concerned with privacy and discretion, and therefore tend to take measures to ensure their yachts are not visible to outsiders.

For instance, some superyacht owners opt to keep their vessels in private marinas, away from the public areas of larger ports.

Additionally, some yacht owners may choose to hire security guards to patrol and protect their vessels while they are moored or sailing.

In addition to physical security, some superyacht owners also use technology to keep their vessels out of the public eye.

For example, a yacht owner may choose to install a satellite-based communications system that allows them to keep their vessel completely off-radar.

This system works by bouncing signals off satellites rather than transmitting them, making it virtually impossible for anyone to track the yachts movements.

Finally, some superyacht owners also choose to limit the number of people who have access to their vessels.

For instance, the owner may only allow family members and close friends to board the yacht.

Additionally, the owner may choose to employ a limited number of staff to help maintain the vessel and keep it running smoothly.

These individuals may be required to sign non-disclosure agreements to ensure they do not disclose any information about the yacht or its owner.

Overall, while some superyacht owners may choose to keep their vessels out of the public eye, there are still plenty of other ways to show off the opulence associated with owning a superyacht.

From swimming pools and helicopter pads to on-board cinemas and spas, there are many luxurious amenities that can make a superyacht the envy of any jet setter.

Final Thoughts

Superyachts are a symbol of luxury and status, and the list of yacht owners reads like a who’s who of billionaires.

From the Emir of Qatar’s world-record breaking $400 million yacht to Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s vessel with a helicopter pad and on-board spa, the amenities of these luxury vessels are truly stunning.

With prices ranging from $30 million to over $400 million, owning a superyacht is an expensive endeavor.

Whether you’re looking to purchase one or just curious to learn more about the owners and their amenities, this guide will provide you with all the information you need to stay up to date with the superyacht scene.

Yacht docked in Dartmouth after German owners die in sailing accident

Volker frank and annemarie auer-frank were sailing bloggers who lived on their yacht.

A sailing yacht has been towed to Dartmouth Cove in Nova Scotia after its German owners were killed last month in an accident at sea.

Volker Frank and Annemarie Auer-Frank lived on their CNB 66 yacht, Escape, and blogged about their sailing experiences.

Last month, the couple picked up two American passengers somewhere in the Caribbean. Around June 9, they left Bermuda and headed for Nova Scotia.

On the morning of June 12, they ran into a bad storm off the coast of Massachusetts, said Lt.-Cmdr. Mason Wilcox of the U.S. Coast Guard.

my escape yacht owner

"There was some sort of rigging failure that had caused an injury to the lady on board, and when the gentleman went by to go help her, he sustained injuries as well," said Wilcox.

"Because of those injuries, the two passengers … hit the emergency beacon on board to say, 'We need help.'"

The coast guard answered the call, and the German couple were taken to Massachusetts where they were pronounced dead.

The coast guard returned later that day to rescue the two American passengers who remained on board Escape, which was left adrift.

"We did not tow the sailboat back because we wanted to get them back to shore as quickly as possible. And unfortunately, towing a sailboat that far could probably cause more damage if we went fast," said Wilcox.

Philip Wash, an experienced sailor from Halifax, was hired by Leeway Marine in Dartmouth to retrieve the yacht.

He and a crew left from Pubnico a couple of weeks ago on a lobster fishing vessel. They spent days searching the Atlantic Ocean for Escape and finally found it in the middle of the night.

"We put all kinds of lights on it, and there it was, just sitting there, flopping back and forth," Wash said.

Before disturbing anything on board, Wash and his crew took pictures of the scene for the German insurance company and investigators.

It's unclear how long the yacht will remain at Dartmouth Cove.

The German investigation into the accident, with the help of the U.S. Coast Guard, is ongoing.

Island Escape yacht Review

Review of island escape yacht.

The 2021-built cruise yacht Island Escape is a 30-passenger ship owned by Seasons Shipping Co Ltd ((Jongno-gu/Seoul, South Korea-based, 2020-founded company registered in Hong Kong China ) and operated under demise/bareboat charter by the New Zealand-based company and travel brand Island Escape Cruises Ltd. Bareboat charter is an arrangement for hiring the ship without the crew or provisions included in the deal.

The luxury boat was constructed by VARD Vietnam (at Vung Tau Shipyard) and is also available for private charters. In 2022, the Island Escape yacht charter cost NZD 325000 (~USD 204K / ~GBP 169K).

IMPORTANT : On November 30, 2022, the superyacht was seized at Port Broome . In 2023, the boat was sold in an auction on January 13th and handed over to the new shipowner on February 22nd. The sale price announced was AUD 5,5M (USD 3,69M / EUR 3,43M).

The ship was sold to pay back the debtors (financiers and unpaid customers) of Island Escape Cruises NZ who owed them millions of dollars. According to shipping experts, the ultra-luxury vessel was sold for ~AUD 34,5M (USD 23,1M / EUR 21,5M) less than its estimated value.

Most of the money was owed to customers who prepaid in 2022 for several 12-day Kimberly voyages (scheduled for 2023) which were eventually canceled. On the date of the liquidation, Island Escape Cruises Ltd owed ~AUD 20,3M (USD 11,17M / EUR 10,38M) to its creditors, including ~AU$11,85M to Eksfin (Export Finance Norway) and ~AU$8,5M to BNZ (Bank of New Zealand). As of May 31, 2023, the company's accounts held ~AU$ 4,677M from pre-booked cruises.

Note: In August 2022, Island Escape Cruises Ltd (owned by Erik Helseth) went into a court-appointed receivership and shortly after started investigations into its finances, conducted by Chapman Atkins Ltd (liquidator). The yacht's sale was ordered by Hon Michael James Feutrill (Federal Court Judge).

Island Escape yacht (Island Escape Cruises NZ)

The vessel (IMO number 9903994) is currently France- flagged (MMSI 538009093) and registered in Majuro / Marshall Islands .

Note: Between 2002-2015, "MS Island Escape" was named the 1982-built cruise liner Scandinavia (IMO 8002597), Alang India -scrapped in 2018 as " MS Ocean Gala ".

History - construction and ownership

The shipowner Island Escape Cruises NZ (2006-founded by Peter Bissett) previously owned and operated the 2007-built catamaran Island Passage (IMO 8745216, 24-passenger boat) which was sold in 2018 to Maple Leaf Adventures (Canada) and renamed Cascadia.

The new superyacht Island Escape (VARD Vung Tau yard/hull number 915) was designed by Vard Design (Vard Marine Inc's naval architecture and marine engineering division) and originally planned for delivery in April (postponed for October) 2021. Due to the Coronavirus crisis, the construction process was hampered (lockdowns, restrictions, supply chain disruptions) and the yacht's delivery was delayed ~7 months.

The vessel was ordered to Vard Vung Tau Ltd in December 2019 (when the shipbuilding contract was signed) and its construction officially started in June 2020, with the keel-laying ceremony.

In November 2020, Island Escape Cruises opened bookings and announced details of the new ship , including an aft helipad (helicopter landing platform), 2x tender boats (used as lifeboats and for disembarkation in ports without docking facilities), 2x Zodiacs (motorized RIBs/rigid inflatable boats used for close-to-shore and inland cruising). Watersports equipment (water toys/kayaks and paddle boards), snorkeling and fishing gear are also provided complimentary.

Island Escape yacht (Island Escape Cruises NZ)

As to marine technologies, the vessel is SOLAS-certified and fitted with the latest-model stabilizers, dynamic positioning system (allows the ship to be stationary without dropping the anchors thus preventing the seabed from damage), fuel-efficient diesel engines, diesel-electric propulsion system, modern HRV/waste-heat recovery system (using the engines' heat for heating the water used in cabin showers and in the galley/kitchen), catalytic converters (reducing NOx emissions to ~90%).

Decks and cabins

Island Escape's staterooms (17 total) are all outside and in suite categories (5 total) accommodating maximum 32 passengers. Cabin types include Owners Suite (1), Horizon Suites (6), Solo Suites (2), Ocean Suites (5) and Ocean Twin Suites (3).

Ocean and Solo cabins are on Lower Deck (Ocean Deck/deck 2), while the Owner's and Horizon cabins are on Upper Deck (Horizon Deck/deck 3). Ocean Suites are with either one King-size double bed, two single beds/twins or one single bed.

All passenger staterooms (designed by Tillberg Design of Sweden) are stylishly decorated, with premium bedding sets (Egyptian cotton linens, 6 pillows), bedside cabinets, wall-mounted reading lamps, writing desk (direct-dial phone, magnifying mirror, power outlets, USB charger), two armchairs, coffee table, wall-mounted HDTV, modern entertainment systems, large wardrobes, spacious bathrooms (WC-toilet, shower, single-sink vanity), individually/thermostat-controlled air conditioning.

All Horizon Deck cabins are with floor-ceiling glass doors opening to private step-out balconies.

The boat has 4 decks , of which 3 are passenger-accessible and 2 with cabins.

Shipboard facilities and amenities

The certified Helideck (deck 4's/topdeck's aft-positioned helipad) is used for landings of helicopters serving the company's heli-transfers between the yacht and homeport. The luxurious boat also features an outdoor spa pool/Jacuzzi. Midship on deck 4 is the Wheelhouse/Navigation Bridge.

At the stern (aft on deck 3) there is an Outdoor Lounge (alfresco dining area with two large tables plus couch seating) which is roof-protected by the Helideck above. An outdoor observation deck (forward on deck 3/at the bow) is furnished with bench seats and small coffee tables. Midship on deck 3 are positioned both tenders (starboard and portside) each feated with a davit crane.

The onboard meals are prepared by professional chefs using the freshest ingredients, including local seafood and the guests' daily catch.

How a dream turned into a reality: owner of 37m Dreams shares his love for Ocean Alexander models

“We love to go places, but we hate to pack our suitcases. And here our house travels with us,” says Mike Wingate, the owner of 37.1-metre Dreams . Spending more than half a year on board his boat, Wingate’s decision to upgrade from his Ocean Alexander 90R to the Ocean Alexander 37L wasn’t one he took lightly. Now after over a year on board, he is happy that his new yacht ticks all of the boxes and he is a passionate advocate of the Ocean Alexander brand.

Wingate says that none of the other boat brands he’s owned in the past compare to what Ocean Alexander can offer. He stepped on board the Ocean Alexander 37L at a boat show, and it was love at first sight for both him and his wife. “Ocean Alexander’s quality and design of boats just fits us really well,” he explains.

Because of Wingate’s experience with Ocean Alexander models, he felt confident signing the contract almost right there and then, even though it was the first hull of a new flagship series. “I’m not allowed to go to boat shows anymore,” he laughs.

It might sound like a spur-of-the-moment purchase based on infatuation and the “immediate gratification” of buying a new boat that could be used right away, but Wingate says that’s far from the truth. “We live on this boat, eight months out of the year,” he says. For that kind of purchase, Wingate had to be certain he was buying something that would keep him — and his friends and family — comfortable for long periods at sea.

The 37L delivers this in spades. “It’s a floating condo on the water,” insists Wingate. He explains that he and his wife had a wish list while they were shopping around for their next yacht, and the 37L met all of their requirements.

One requirement was having a master stateroom on the main deck. On Dreams , tall glass windows encase the owner’s cabin in a full semi-circle, letting light pour in and offering uncompromising views whether the yacht is cruising or berthed. The cabin connects to an exterior deck seating area, where Wingate and his wife can enjoy some peace and privacy over a morning cup of coffee or an evening glass of chilled rosé. It’s a great space for a yacht which is regularly used for hosting large gatherings — a little slice of serenity for an owner to escape to whenever it’s needed.

Another key selling point was the galley. It is “a real galley and something that Americans are used to living in,” says Wingate. The galley is pride of place on the main deck, and it’s flooded with light thanks to large windows. This isn’t a galley that’s relegated to the bowels of the boat, designed for an invisible chef to cook meals in. This is like a galley on land, designed to be the heart of the yacht. As well as its good size and location, it’s also highly specced-out to ensure gourmet cuisine wherever Dreams cruises. “The galley could rival most luxury homes,” says Wingate.

Finally, Wingate was looking for an on-deck Jacuzzi, an attractive exterior and a high-volume interior, which he found on the Ocean Alexander 37L. He wanted the space for entertaining, as he has a lot of friends and family who love boating as much as he does. “The bridge deck is just massive,” says Wingate. It’s all one level, so Wingate says it’s perfect for gathering everyone in one place without anything feeling cut off or disconnected from the action.

But when it comes to privacy, Wingate says his Ocean Alexander can offer that as well. “This boat we love because all the crew are in the back of the boat,” he explains. “Where a lot of boats have the crew in the bow , and they have to enter in and out of the galley all the time. We like coming back to a boat where it’s private to us.”

One of the other things that has kept Wingate with the brand is the Ocean Alexander service centre in Fort Lauderdale, which he says is a huge peace of mind whenever Dreams sets off on an adventure. “They have been tremendous to work with on warranty work and getting items fixed quickly,” says Wingate.

Dreams cruises mostly around Miami, the Florida Keys the Bahamas. Although she is elegant at heart — with a classic profile that Wingate was instantly smitten with — she is still sturdy and Wingate feels like he’s in safe hands on board. For Wingate, she is the perfect home away from home that he had always dreamed of growing up in the Midwest.

Wingate says he doesn’t have any plans to go up another size anytime soon, but if he does, he is confident it will be within the Ocean Alexander family.

With new units already under construction, the Ocean Alexander 37L can offer the same levels of luxury and enjoyment to any other discerning yacht owners. For those who prefer to see it for themselves, arrangements can be made to visit the yacht in Florida today by contacting Ocean Alexander directly here.

Consumer Alert: Ford, Mazda Issue “Do Not Drive” Warnings for More Than 457,000 Vehicles with Recalled Takata Air Bags

Vehicle owners are urged not to drive affected vehicles until the free repair is completed

August 13, 2024 | Washington, DC

Ford Motor Co. and Mazda North American Operations today have issued urgent “Do Not Drive” warnings for more than 457,000 vehicles equipped with recalled, unrepaired Takata air bags. If you have one of these vehicles, do not drive it until the repair is completed and the defective air bag is replaced.

This “Do Not Drive” warning covers all unrepaired , recalled Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles, as well as all Mazda vehicles, that are equipped with non-desiccated Takata air bags.

Ford’s warning covers 374,290 model year 2004-2014 vehicles previously recalled under the following campaigns:

  • 2004-2006 Ranger
  • 2005-2006 GT
  • 2005-2014 Mustang
  • 2006-2012 Fusion
  • 2006-2012 Lincoln MKZ/Zephyr
  • 2006-2012 Mercury Milan
  • 2007-2010 Edge
  • 2007-2010 Lincoln MKX
  • 2007-2011 Ranger

Mazda’s warning covers 82,893 model year 2003-2015 vehicles previously recalled under the following campaigns:

  • 2004-2006 B-Series
  • 2007-2009 B-Series
  • 2003-2008 Mazda6
  • 2006-2007 MazdaSpeed6
  • 2004-2011 RX-8
  • 2004-2006 MPV
  • 2009-2013 Mazda6
  • 2007-2012 CX-7
  • 2007-2015 CX-9

Some of these vehicles are now more than 20 years old, which increases the risk of an air bag rupturing in a crash. If an explosion occurs, it can severely injure or kill vehicle occupants.

NHTSA is urging all vehicle owners to immediately check to see if their vehicle has an open Takata air bag recall. If it does, owners should contact their dealership to schedule a free repair as soon as possible and follow any warnings from the vehicle manufacturer. Ford and Mazda are offering free towing, mobile repair and, if necessary, loaner vehicles.

Ford customers with questions or concerns can visit the automaker’s recalls website and check to see if their vehicle is affected. Mazda customers can visit its recalls website for more information and to check for recalls.

To date, NHTSA has confirmed 27 people in the U.S. have been killed by defective Takata air bags that exploded. In addition, at least 400 people in the U.S. reportedly have been injured by exploding Takata air bag inflators. Even minor crashes can result in exploding Takata air bags that can kill or produce life-altering, gruesome injuries. Older model year vehicles put their occupants at higher risk, as the age of the air bag is one of the contributing factors.

For Takata information for specific vehicle manufacturers, please click here . For more information from NHTSA on the Takata air bag safety recall, please click here .

How to Check for Recalls

  • Use NHTSA’s Recalls Lookup Tool to enter your license plate number or vehicle identification number to search for any open safety recalls, including the urgent Takata recall.
  • Download our SaferCar app and let it check automatically for you.
  • If your vehicle does have a safety recall, call your automaker’s local dealer to schedule the free recall repair.
  • Sign up at NHTSA.gov/Alerts to be notified by email if your vehicle is affected by a future recall.

If you think your vehicle may have a safety defect that isn’t part of a current recall, contact NHTSA online or by calling the agency’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 , Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern time. For more information, visit NHTSA.gov/Recalls.

Steve Jobs’ visionary superyacht collided with a Mexican billionaire’s boat

Mexican billionaire Ricardo Salinas Pliego bought the superyacht Lady Moura for $125 million.

Steve Jobs’ $130 million former yacht, Venus, was accidentally involved in a billionaire boat collision off the coast of Italy. The Apple cofounder, a legendary tech inventor and CEO, passed away in 2011 at the age of 56.

The 256-foot-long vessel, now owned by Jobs’ widow, businesswoman Laurene Powell Jobs, was anchored off the coast of Naples when a change in the wind caused it to drift, Business Insider reported , citing a spokesperson from Powell Jobs’ Emerson Collective.

Venus collided with another superyacht, Lady Moura , owned by the third-richest man in Mexico, Ricardo Salinas Pliego . Only crew members were aboard the Venus , according to the spokesperson.

In a video posted by Salinas Pliego on social media, those aboard the Lady Moura could be seen shouting to get the attention of the crew aboard Venus, to no avail. In a post on X Wednesday, a clearly irritated Salinas Pliego said in Spanish that Venus left “a big scratch that is going to cost a lot to fix.”

“I’d like to know what the captain and crew were doing that they didn’t notice a yacht as big as mine in front of them,” the cofounder and chairman of conglomerate Grupo Salinas wrote on X.

There was no shortage of idiots in the world, he added.

The multibillionaire, who owns a chain of stores in Latin America called Elektra that offers everything from motorcycles to electronics with financing, joked that his social media followers should buy Apple products from his stores so Powell Jobs could afford to pay for the repairs to his boat.

Jobs’ yacht launched in 2012, just a year after the Apple founder’s death from pancreatic cancer. Jobs collaborated with French designer Philippe Starck over four years to create a ship that matched the minimalist aesthetic of an Apple product. Although he never set foot on deck, the ship ended up being one of Jobs’ final passion projects, according to Vanity Fair .

“It was not a yacht that Steve and I were constructing, we were embarked on a philosophical action, implemented according to a quasi-religious process. We formed a single brain with four lobes,” Starck told Vanity Fair.

The damages to Lady Moura will likely be covered by insurance, which can range from 5% to 6% of the vessel’s total value. Salinas Pliego reportedly bought the superyacht for $125 million in 2022 . The two ship captains apparently met immediately to discuss the “minor repairs needed,” Boat International reported , citing a source close to the matter.

Although bothered by the crash, Salinas Pliego seemed to want to cast off from the subject.

“Oh well, we’re going to continue enjoying our vacation,” he wrote on X.
