Lockley Newport 17 Sailboat Review, Modifications, and Parts Sources.

You found this page because you're considering a used newport 17 or searching for parts. .

Bill's Lockley Newport 17 Sailboat Buyers Guide Review, Modifications, and Parts Sources.

I started writing this page on 7/3/22. It will be updated periodically. Join my Lockley Newport sailboat Group for answers to your sailboat questions.

Bill's Buyer's Guide to used Newport 17 Sailboats.

The Newport 17 Sailboat was manufactured from 1974 to 1980. It weighs 800 pounds. Waterline length, 16.17 ft (0%), the closest to 15 ft ; Maximum draft, 4.75 ft ; Ballast, 235 lbs ; Hull speed, 5.39 knots.

The N17 is basically the Dodge Aries "K" car of sailboats. Just like Dodge, Lockley Newport made the N17 with the basic essentials to keep the retail price affordable. This is why they're cheap to buy used today, which is appealing to 1st time sailboat buyers. You learn why it was cheap after you've sailed on other boats. It lacks a lot of refinements, but it's a great sailboat for entering the hobby. I've had my Newport 17 for three years and learned a lot about it's best and worst attributes.

What's good about the Newport 17 sailboats?

• newport 17 hulls and decks are durable. .

The fiberglass hull and top cover is very strong. I'm 195 pounds and stand on the 48 year old top cover often without any cracking. I haven't met anyone in the Lockley / Newport Boats FB group who's had to repair a hole in their Newport 17 hull. My first sailboat was a Surprise by the same manufacturer. It had been dropped on concrete by accident without any damage. Lockley / Newport Boats are like tanks.

•  Newport 17 overnight cuddy fits two adults.

I'm 6ft 3' and can fully lay down on either starboard or port side in the Newport 17 cuddy. There is 13.25" diameter molded recess for portable toilet,  under the forward berth, but finding toilet that will fit can be challenging.

Newport 17 sailboat portable toilet size for cuddy

Newport 17 molded recess for Portable Toilet. Samuel Klein posted these photos on how he modified the recess to fit this HASSOCK Portable Toilet .

•  Newport 17 sailboats look great!

This is likely the reason why you're considering buying a Newport 17. It still looks good! The design has aged nicely over the past four decades. I'm often told my Newport 17 is beautiful and they're surprised when I tell them I paid only $600 for it with trailer.

•  Newport 17 is great for new Sailors.

Everything is simple on this sailboat with only the essential rigging. After you get more accustomed to sailing the Newport 17, you can add whatever refinements to the rigging you want. It's great blank canvas for DIYer's to add and tweak things.

The Bad Things about Newport 17 Sailboats.

• factory replacement parts don't exist anymore..

Lockley Newport Boats was a small family operated manufacturer. Rigging is Rigging. You can buy universal parts or adopt rigging from any other sailboats brands / models.  T he only factory specification replacement part you can buy for Newport 17 is the mast made and sold by DWYER MAST . You can buy aftermarket updated Newport 17 rudder design by Rudder Craft . The cuddy covers, deck rails, tiller, centerboard and any other mechanicals you'll have to fabricate yourself or repair.

•  Centerboard / Keel prone to getting stuck or line breaking.

The Newport 17 centerboard keel tucks inside the hull.  You raise and lower the centerboard with a line in the center of the deck. The line is held in place with a cleat. This line  attaches to a retracting reel under the deck.

Newport 17 centerboard line location

You can see the reel if you look under the floor from the cuddy.

Lockley Newport 17 sailboat centerboard reel and winch

Here's a photo by Richard Smith of the Winch and reel Assembly removed.

If your Lockley / Newport Boats Newport 17 centerboard line breaks, you need to either raise the boat or tip it on it's side to access the centerboard. You feed new centerboard line from the cabin attached to a wire (watch video) and attach new centerboard from the bottom of boat.

Fix and repair newport 17 centerboard line

If you get late 70's Newport 17, the centerboard has updated hank crank with access cover from the cabin for repairs. (Pictured above)

This video guide shows you   how to replace centerboard line on most sailboats   including the Newport 17.

Newport 17 Main Sheet Traveler Rigging Layout.

This is the direction 3/8" diameter line in your Newport 17 mainsheet halyard line. Notice end of the line is attached to block at top of photo. It has halyard line eye splice, but you can tie your own knot instead if necessary. I like this Double Braid Polyester Sailing Line Rope for my sailboats and will tie my own knot. Otherwise  Castobargains makes halyard lines with an eye splice for your Newport 17 Traveler.

Newport 17 Center Board / Swing Keel Dimensions.

Another common issue is over time Newport 17's centerboard develops corrosion causing it to stick inside the hull.  We moor our Newport 17 on a lake with seasonal algae that builds up on the keel causing it to stick.   If you've just launched your sailboat and the centerboard won't lower, let the boat sit in the water for a day or two and the water may break centerboard loose.  If soaking doesn't work, you need to get the boat raised so you can pull out the centerboard and clean it's surface. I've seen people raise their sailboats with jack stands and lumber beams, two engine lifts, or use a tractor with nylon tow straps tied to the shovel to raise the boat. If you don't have these options, take the boat to a Marina with a repair shop and boat lift.

•  No Navigation lights.

Under power of motor (sails down) or sleeping at night, You need one white light on the stern and one white light on top of your masthead and bi-color green and red light on your bow.

Under sail power at night, y ou need white light on the stern and tri-color white on top of masthead and bi-color green and red light on your bow.

See more details on   Navigation Light Rules .

•  Non-Reefing Mainsheet.

Newport 17's factory mainsheet doesn't allow reefing. This allows you to shorten the mainsheet in high winds. Getting caught in 16+ knots with 24+ wind gusts will get scary under a full sail. You can buy new mainsheet that allows reefing. I ordered my   mainsheet for the Newport 17 with reefing points   for $675.

•  No Boom Vang.

A Boom Vang pulls the boom downward and removes the slack from your mainsheet. I bought this   Boom Vang for my Newport 17 .

•  No Furling jib.

Not crucial, but very helpful for Solo sailing. Avoid your jib sail lines flopping around in the wind like two angry snakes on your deck.

•  No Outhaul rigging on the boom.

Only crucial if you're sailing with aftermarket loose foot mainsheet. It allows you to adjust the position of the mainsheet along the boom on low wind days. You can easily make your own Outhaul with one block and a cleat.

•  No Topping lift, ( see guide here )

Topping lift is a line that runs from the top of your mast to the end of your boom. Without a topping lift, your boom will drop onto the floor or your foot when lower your mainsheet. Not having one will become annoying and it's usually first thing people add. I recommend adding shackle to your boom, so you disconnect the Topping Lift while sailing, otherwise it may obstruct your mainsheet.

•  Wooden rudder ages and cracks.

Lockley Newport Boats saves money on using marine grade wood for their rudders. If you moor your sailboat on a lake, you need to preserve the life of your rudder and remove it or tip back out of the water when not sailing. People have used fiberglass to repair their cracked rudders.

•  Wood cuddy covers age and develop rain water leaking.

Over time the wood used for the three cuddy cover planks will warp, causing rain to leak inside the boat. Many people make rain shields.

Best Gas Outboard Motor for the Newport 17?

Suzuki's 2.5hp model DF2.5L2 outboard motor is popular choice in our Newport 17 Sailboat group. It's a perfect choice for any sailboat that is 22' and smaller. At only 31 lbs, it's the lightest 4-stroke Suzuki long shaft model outboard ever built.

best outboard for trailer sailboat suzuki 2-5hp df2 5l2 outboard motor

Best Electric Trolling Motor for the Newport 17?

You need a motor for several reasons on a sailboat. Maneuvering your boat to and from the boat launch. Back and forth to a mooring buoy and when you need to avoid catastrophes from happening like running into trees or rocks. Many people use gas outboard motors up to 5 hp. We sail our Newport 17 sailboat on a city lake that doesn't allow gas motors.

This  Minn Kota C2 30 lb Thrust Trolling Motor will get two adults back to shore with 16 knot head wind under full charge. If you predict sailing with four adults, invest in the Minn Kota 55-lb Thrust .

I use this Mighty Max 12 volt battery in this battery box & power center mounted to floor inside the cuddy. I'm using this  Trolling Motor Extension cable Kit that runs under crew bench seat.

Buy Lockley Newport 17 Sailboat Review, Modifications, and Parts Sources.

Before I tell you everything that myself and my Newport 17 friends hate about it, let's remind ourselves it was sold as an “entry level” sailboat. Reasonably priced to get families on the water without breaking the bank. This is why you see Newport 17's selling cheaper than same size sailboats. Unless the dealer or previous owners added aftermarket parts, it lacks a lot of features and rigging. Many Newport 17 owners are DIYers like myself that have added these refinements on low budgets.

Release Mainsheet before you capsize your Newport 17 Sailboat!

Lockley Newport 17 Hull floatation when capsized

Any sailboat can capsize with an inexperienced Captain.  You simply don't sail in wind speeds beyond your skill level on any sailboat. The  Newport 17 is 700 pounds with a small keel. It's sails like a Hippo on a Unicycle in high winds. The Newport 17 factory mainsheet doesn't allow reefing. Getting caught in 16+ knots with 24+ wind gusts in Newport 17 under full sail is scary. A high wind can push you over if you don't release your mainsheet!  The individual who owns the capsized Newport 17 in above photo was inexperienced. If they could have reefed their mainsheet, this accident may have been avoided.

How to recover Newport 17 sailboat if you capsize?

Add floatation device to the top of your mast. Two or three milk jugs will work. If you don't have mast floatation when you capsize, you can loop a children's bouncy ball around the mast and drag it to the top to lift the sunken last. Then pull up the centerboard and have somebody tow your boat to shore, so you can bail out the cuddy.

Craziest Internet Story I've found about the Newport 16 & 17 sailboats.

Captain Nasty aka Captain Robby Smith Jupiter, Fla

Mady August 29, 2022

It’s very sad that Captain Robby Smith passed away. It would have been so fun to have met him and heard his Sailing stories in person. It sounds like he had a real passion for Adventure!

Chris August 23, 2022

What a great story. I had read it a few years back when I first bought my NP17. Great site!

Congrats on your new boat! You are wise to be cautious on how far afield you venture in this boat, at least until you've gained more experience and put it to the test locally. A good friend just picked one up for free (actually, he traded a case of beer for it). It's not near as nice as yours, and needs work. If he ever gets it in the water (he's a collector, and is almost as happy to own it as to use it), I am goading him to sail it across Cape Cod Bay, say from Wellfleet to Plymouth. Since I am the instigator, I will probably have to join him, and under the right conditions with proper equipment, that would not worry me. I do not like the sound of theat piece of zinc on the leading edge of the centerboard. Close-up photos would be helpful, but my insinct is to remove it. Foils are tricky and should not be tampered with unless you really know what you're doing. But maybe it was applied by a pro...

Keep the zinc if you stay in salt water. It won't noticably affect the sailing ability but it will reduce the chances of the mild steel centerboard electrolysizing away. These were mediocre boats, meaning not as poorly built as the ventures for example but not as well built as some of the higher quality daysailers of the day. There is nothing robust about these boats, but, when new, they were not fragile either. They offered lackluster sailing ability at both ends of the wind range, poor performers in light air (too heavy and too much wetted surface) and were not meant for heravier conditions as well (too lightly ballasted). With regards to your chainplates, it is normal for the structural part of the chainplate (the tang) to pass through the deck and be bolted to the hull and to have an escutcheon plate that sits on the deck that acts as a trim piece and a place to caulk and keep water out. Jeff

My advice about the zinc was based on your first post where you said "Mine has a zinc strip added to the leading edge of the keel to limit corrosion." I interpreted that as some kind of jury rigged arrangement that would disturb flow over the foil. Based on your subsequent description, wherein you describe a pretty standard bolt-on tear-drop zinc located near the lower edge of the centerboard, I would agree with Jeff H. and suggest leaving it on. The tiny bit of extra draft shouldn't be a problem, except maybe when beaching, but even then probably not.

EDIT - Here is the web page: http://underwaymarine.com/capt_smith.htm I didn't make this up... OK, I got an email back from someone with experience with the Newport. What I read on his web page made me wonder. On one page, he played the story up so much I thought it was a farce, but on another page which gave his history because he does sailboat deliveries, he had elements of the same stories, so I emailed him and asked about whether the events actually occurred. Here is his reply: Andy, Back in the mid 70's I borrowed a Newport 17 from a young firefighter in Kittyhawk, NC. I trailered it down to the Florida Keys and sailed it to Bimini, Bahamas. I then headed south along the western coast of Andros when the wooden rudder snapped off and I had to learn how to maneuver it with just the sails 25 miles back to Bimini. Borrowing tools from a bahamian I shortened the rudder board and reinstalled it then sailed back to the Keys and took it back to Kittyhawk. Along the way I saw a Newport 16 which had much better design lines. Later that year I bought one from the Lockley-Newport plant in Gloucester, VA. I sailed that one from Jupiter, FL through the Bahamas and the windward passage to the north coast of Jamaica where I rolled it over in steep seas and it sank! It took me 3 hours to swim in to Discovery Bay where immigration officials housed me for a week in their police barracks. Finally a friend of mine in Jupiter sent me a plane ticket back to Miami on Air Jamaica. I then hitch hiked up to the lockley yard and confronted the manager Harry Sindel about the sinking. Obviously, they didn't put any floatation between the hull and liner. I worked out a deal with him where I could build another 16 in the corner of their warehouse at their material exspense. Five weeks later I completed the boat and Harry launched me at Mobjack bay and I headed back down the coast to Florida. I hadn't realized that as the boat only weighed 800 lbs. when I squiggled into the cabin to sleep my 180 lbs. dramatically changed the trim of the hull. It was like standing on the front of a surfboard hanging 10. As I approached Cape Romain, SC I became involved in a northeaster blowing about 25 to 30 and then fastened the tiller amidships, dropped all sails and crawled into my bunk just after dark. About 10 that evening I suddenly awoke as the boat planed down the face of a big steep wave and broached rolling upsidedown. It took me 3 days to right the boat, restep the mast and sail into Port Royal Sound where a shrimp trawler towed me to a marina on the north end of Hilton Head Island. It took me 3 months to repair the boat and myself and proceed toward Jupiter where I took off for the Abacos. I spent the next year in and around Marsh Harbor. Every decent day I would sail to the reef along Man O' War cay and Guana cay and spear grouper to give away back in the anchorage. Then I met David Crosby on his 60' Alden schooner named Mayan and he hired me to run his boat for the next 6 years. I've been delivering, racing, repairing and captaining sailboats ever since. I'm now 61 years old and still pumping the wind! Please tell me some of your history. I love to learn about others since I already know about me. Thanks for the inquiry, Capt. Robby

Abarnhart, what a great email, thanks for sharing.

BTW, I am not planning to try what he did (assuming his recollection of the aforementioned events is accurate). I had another good outing with the kids in it today, this time with all 4 kids on Kerr Lake, sailing across the state line into Virginia. A couple of times when we had decent wind I pulled a boogie board behind. A couple of times when the wind dided down I had the little 2 stroke I sweated over actually run for minutes at time and push us in actual planned directions.

To arbarnhart, I see that you are using an image for you photo of a Newport sailing in "unprotected waters". That is me in June 2006 sailing my Newport on Lake Erie, Ohio. I'd sometime trailer her "Whisper" to Pymatuning reservoir. I sailed her for 11 years singlehanded before selling in 2007 to someone in PA. Now I sea kayak for fun but miss Whisper. Have fun. Jeff

Abarnhart, we have the exact same boat. i purchased it in the fall for the scrap value of the galvanized trailer. it was sitting in the woods for the past 5 years. i am in the process of restoring it and i would love to see more pictures of yours. -Paul

priceless9192 and abarnhart I just purchased a Newport 17 a month ago and haven't had it on the water does need some minor work but is worthy of sailing. I purchased this boat for nearly nothing. Just curious if your still sailing yours being a couple years since postings. I have also read mixed reviews, pros and cons that doesn't bother me much as this is my first sailboat (other than a Snark which I enjoy sailing). I have one (of many) questions does the mast have a support post under it in the cuddy, my boat does not have the feature or at least did not come with the boat. I have a Lockley Newport 17 1981. Thank you for any help / information George

Dinghy monohulls vary more than any other type of sailboat. The Newport 17 (and app the McGregor 26) has an unusual sailboat hull form. The chines have a very small radius, below much freeboard, and the bottom is nearly flat. It looks to have no more than 6 inches of rocker over its length of keel. This is not too far off a classic sharpie except that there is little or no tuck in the quarters. That is, the boat has a wide transom, 2/3 of the beam. My question: What are the advantages and disadvantages? It is not considered a fast hull but in its day was a reasonably popular design. HAILE

The wide stern keeps the boat from squatting under power. The new McGregors plane at something like 30MPH
More or less my own surmise, though I think the N17 has more grace, and I wondered if there could be a sailing advantage, such as stiffness, tracking, balance and a soft helm, gain in heeled waterline, or any consideration other than shipping an outboard. After all, the N17 comes from the days when trailer/sailers routinely carried a 5hp or less. What does a designer aim for with such a full hull? Plain roominess? I had just never seen a purely sailing hull like this and wondered what sort of coefficient was at work, that's all. HAILE
Wide stern boats have to be sailed flat or they drag the corner
Gonzo, Then a wide flat stern on this, or any, sailboat is purely for form stability to help it sail flat, right? I'm thinking of a Mobjack, which is a very fast boat without being extreme but does best flat. But the Mobjack differs from the N17 in having very round bilges amidships, making little beam at LWL when flat, but getting much harder towards the stern until there it looks like the N17. I just had a phone conversation with the N17 designer, Harry Sindle, who was short on numbers or specifics, but pointed to it and the N214 (a larger version of the same lines) as tough, fast boats, that were drawn for good form stability. There's no way either of them can be sailed flat, though. ED HAILE.

It is partially true that a wide transom may drag when heeled. Whether it does or not depends on rocker aft. How far above the normal waterline is the transom/bottom intersection? Does the transom/bottom have camber or deadrise? How does the boat trim, fore and aft, in normal sailing mode? What angle of heel is expected or tolerated by the crew? All that weighs into whether or not the transom drags. Indeed the heeled waterlines may become longer at certain heel angles and present little or no transom drag. That is of course, only if the boat was thoughtfully designed.... which we would hope for.

Hi Messabout, That's just the kind of talk I want to hear. Re the Newport 17, I had an option to buy one, so I gave the boat some thought and asked around. My comments are all theoretical. I have not sailed this boat. But I will try to answer the considerations you raise. The boat kind of made sense to me after a while. First of all, I decided to give Harry Sindle a call. He lives locally (in Virginia) and he designed the boat. Briefly, the boat is stiff, fast, and was popular. So he claims. The full bilges were designed for initial stability, and he didn’t have much to add more subtle than that. Needs no more hull ballast or keel/CB weight to do the job. Great for the Chesapeake, not for anything ambitious on the Atlantic. The high freeboard was to keep her dry. Did she have a hard spot when she heeled, I asked, or was she like a sharpie with initial stability, but little reserve? He couldn’t say, not familiar with sharpies. He acknowledged that the 17’s lines are a scaled down version of the Newport 214. The lines are unpublished, but there is a plan profile and overview on line at a Newport boats page. The photos at Texas Sailing tell the rest. How well does a boat sail with these proportions and a chine with an 8-inch radius carried 3/4 forward? When you look at the 6-in rocker, the shallow vee bottom, wide transom and absence of anything you could call tuck in her quarters (high Portsmouth number?), ultralight displacement at 800# on a 16-foot-plus, and small sail area, I think the conclusion is no too hard to draw. She illustrates the distinction between a ballasted CB (a mere 125#) versus a true swing-keel that here should weigh at least 300#. The brochure calls her a family sailer, cruiser/weekender, and for that function no doubt she fills the bill. She’s what I would call a Force 4 boat, and a very good example of the type. Plenty of initial stability through form, zero in reserve, too much wetted surface to be fast as a result. Though more daring souls might try to push her with more sail and more wind, she will not have a clean wake. An unusual feature is the forestay. It hits the deck 18 inches aft the stem. That must be in order to move the CE aft with the CLR and get the board trunk out of the cabin. But she has a long cockpit, so the cabin has to lose a sliding hatch. Good points to me are internal volume, the possibility of working the foredeck from a hatch to be cut in the cabin top, and the ease a masthead drifter can be tacked around that forestay. All in all, I have decided to go with her very different sister, Bill Lapworth’s Gloucester 16. ED HAILE

after and having done some sailing as teens years ago.

Needs/wants:

- for the first year we will be almost entirely trailering to lakes near our camp in upstate NY while continuing nearby locally.

is a plus - we live on a creek in jersey, after this year we will be storing the near backyard . high tide = 6 ft everywhere in the creek, but there are some surprises and that's only at high tide. Coming in at anything less than high tide and it would be really nice to know we're not going to run aground.

- the lake we want to learn on and our own backyard access have low bridges. Our plan is to (after 1-2 years mainly trailering) out of the creek with the down, and then put it up. A hinged design or tabernacle system would make this much easier.

Our dog loves to ride on but will definitely want a shady place to chill. And it would be nice to have the space!

. So we need to be able to less than/close to that number!

. We're beginners! haha. We're ready for some good laughs/dumb but we also don't want to set ourselves up for failure!

In our area, within our , we have found a Com-pac 16 and a 17. (Also a Siren 17 and a Vagabond 17 that we are still somewhat considering)

Pros:
lots of information online for
low rating (compared to the others anyway) of 2.33
= 1.5 ft
Was used often in the last year
Listed as a "trailerable design"

Cons:
Fixed , not beachable
1100 pounds, WITHOUT weight. Is this too close to our towing max for our small SUV?
Does not have a tabernacle , we would need to install it

Pros:
800 pounds, nowhere near our towing max
retractable , saw pictures of it beached (?)
4.75 ft cb down, .75 ft cb up -- clearly trailerable
comes with a hinged mast

Cons:
rare-ish boat. Finding it v hard to find information online.
wasn't used at all in the last 2 years according to owner
rating = 2.7

Quick notes:
siren 17- swing , beachable, draft = 4.75 ft -.67 ft, 2.94 capsize rating
vagabond 17- swing keel, listed as beachable (?), draft = 4.17ft - 1.67 ft, 2.95 capsize rating, doesn't come with a and already near top of .

?). HOWEVER, that 1100 pound weight is killing me! With our SUV listed at 1500 pound towing max, is that just too close for comfort?

Thanks! Any and all opinions, no matter how biased or arrogant would be appreciated. We're so new to this and want to make a smart decision!

in my as you try to get the boat out of the at the . Maybe some folks here accomplished a similar task with a Subaru; I'd love to learn from their experiences. I trailered other things than boats back in time, and I had always made my calculations conservatively. If you want a Compac, maybe a new car, or a truck, shall also be an essential consideration.

Newport 17 has lighter ballast. It might possibly , but... Let's see if a Subaru owner will step in and enlighten us both.

I'm new to sailing too, and a very helpful moderator here introduced me to the world of Day Sailers. Being centerboard dinghies and having the crew as the only ballast, they are light enough for the purpose. They have no cabins, but you can be creative with them in the name of arranging a shady spot for the dog. The problem is if they are pushed hard enough, they can capsize. Although, I was told that to capsize a Day Sailer, you've got to push it's limits real hard. Still, capsizing might not be a good option for the puppy, so maybe it's time to shop for a car with more towing capacity.

Note: Second thought, even with a Day Sailer, I would only feel comfortable if I had more towing capacity. I don't know how heavy a safe enough trailer would be considering the distances that you are planning to drive...

on both and a number of lakes. You're right that it is a stubby, little fixed keel, but we ran it right up to the beach in the shallows. I didn't get too wet walking the last distance.

She was sturdy.

, but the apparent . If you want experience, then go for a lighter, faster, sailboat, that you will actually “sail” more of the time. If you want to be checking out the local area and have a degree of comfort, go for the Compac. Either way, have fun.

What are you looking to do? Add an interior? Refinish the fiberglass? What's there now? On my N17 the interior is all fiberglass. The underside of the deck looks to have been sprayed white and the other surfaces are finished fiberglass. All mine needs is a good buffing but I only use it as an equipment locker so that's not happening. If you are going to actually use the cabin, based on mine, I would buff up the fiberglass surfaces, add cushions and enjoy. I like the blue sails!

Thank you for the reply. First thing I need to get some natural light in cabin as well as Some air flow. I want to make family friendly and right now it's like looking in a cave. As for the sails they are homemade momma won't let me spend any money on the sailboat

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
