Nirvana: On board the 88.5m floating paradise island by Oceanco

A family’s active lifestyle at sea was the driving force behind the inspired design of Oceanco’s fabulous 88.5 metre Nirvana . Now available for charter with Y.CO , BOAT remembers her build...

Built under the code name Y707 , Nirvana just edged out Seven Seas as the largest Oceanco constructed under the builder’s generation of Y-coded yachts when she was delivered in 2012. Of course, the Dutch shipyard has continued to up its game with bigger builds in the nine years since she hit the water, but it doesn't stop yacht spotters gawking at this floating private island even today. Revealed to the nautical press in June 2011 as an unpainted steel hull and shiny aluminium superstructure, within 12 months she blossomed into a yacht that lives up to her name.

Nirvana was styled inside and out by Sam Sorgiovanni to support an active lifestyle. Her majestic hull sports a distinctive slightly flared bow and swooping curve that begins aft of amidships. She is bound to be recognisable in any port due, in part, to Sorgiovanni’s signature brightwork on the transom and the strip of mahogany look that outlines the cap rail and extends, visibly, the length of the yacht. Sorgiovanni employed a similar effect on another Oceanco he designed in 2008, the 75.5 metre Anastasia (now Wheels). This nostalgic gesture provides a contrast to the modernity and whimsy that dominates the interior design of the boat.

‘Unique, individual and stylistically different are all words that come to mind when describing my objectives in the creation of the design,’ says Sorgiovanni. ‘ Anastasia had a beach house theme but the inspiration for Nirvana ’s design moves from the sandy shore into a tropical island rainforest.’ Steering clear of creating a Disney-esque kitsch environment, the yacht’s interior appointments are refined with a sophisticated contemporary feel, albeit with a twist, because there are Balinese and Indonesian design accents and other surprises.

Nearly 200 materials were used to create a jungle ambience. There are 10 different wood veneers, including eucalyptus, teak, oak and palm wood in various finishes. The bamboo flooring used throughout is finely detailed to resemble ripples of sand, yet the sensation underfoot is smooth as silk. Black mother-of-pearl, white onyx and limestone are blended with a host of natural materials and fabrics. The colour palette for the furnishings logically tends toward earth tones, and everywhere is a splash of green in shades ranging from Coke bottle to chartreuse. These green accents appear in upholstered chairs, leafy-design carpets, silk throw pillows and objets d’art .

Nirvana has six decks, all connected by the main stairwell and an extraordinary six-person glass lift that is entwined in a striking stainless-steel woven art piece resembling a bubbling whirlpool. This captivating sculptural feature is a focal point on all levels.

Sliding glass doors from the aft main deck lead into the convivial main saloon, replete with textural artistic elements such as back-lit bamboo-design wall panels, a layered wire Balinese sculpture, an imposing Brazilian fossil and a metal sculpture inspired by cumulus clouds.

Also on the main deck are the dining area and a cosy separate sitting room, which converts into a massage room. To preserve openness and flow, the rooms are only partially separated, but instead of the 2,700 litre aquarium that splits the dining and lounge areas on Anastasia , these areas are divided by two vivariums alive with water dragons, bearded lizards, turtles, a (usually green) chameleon and exotic frogs.

On yachts of this size it is almost expected that the guest cabins will be on the main deck. It is not only convenient for guests but also allows the suites to have large windows.  Nirvana  can accommodate up to 12 guests in a full-beam VIP suite forward and four other double cabins. All have en suites equipped with rain showers and bathtubs. Bucking the iPad trend, each cabin has a Crestron panel that includes a crew call button, gives guests access to the internet, allows them to follow the yacht’s itinerary by GPS, operate the blinds, adjust the lights and select films.

The main aft deck features an immense oval-shaped 7.5 metre pool with a depth of 1.4 metres. It was, at the time, the largest pool aboard any Oceanco and the first the yard made in fibreglass. It’s depth-adjustable and can be filled with either fresh or seawater.

One deck above is the owner’s exclusive domain. Here, Sorgiovanni chose an asymmetrical layout for the 150 square metre master suite to create more privacy and easier circulation on the starboard side. A large skylight set into the oak overhead allows natural light to flood the bedroom, while the his-and-hers facilities in white Iranian onyx include a large shower and bathtub with dressing rooms decorated in black onyx and zebrano wood. A private sitting room and a separate office complete the suite, while a vast exterior terrace forward has a whirlpool tub and several sunbathing options.

Aft and amidship of the suite is a saloon-cum-cinema and a games area with stunning sea views through full-height windows and folding balconies. Finally, the exterior aft deck is the primary alfresco dining area. The table expands to seat 18 guests, and a built-in buffet bar can accommodate multiple hot and cold dishes. Windscreens and doors make this a multi-season space on board  Nirvana .

Moving up a level, aft of the bridge guests can work out in the 85 square metre gym, which includes an inset treadmill and free weights. The adjacent traditional sauna has a floor made from a special resin finished in a stone motif and a shower clad in Chinese black mother-of-pearl.

At the top of  Nirvana , the sundeck aft is also a touch-and-go helicopter pad that includes 14 inset lights and two foldable wings for extra safety space for the aircraft. Opposite is a whirlpool with generous sunbathing cushions all around. The deck is about 12 metres above the waterline so the outlook is breathtaking – a near 360-degree view is possible from foredeck to aft.

Other features of  Nirvana  support the water sports passions of the family. An enlarged sea terrace door opens onto the tender garage and storage, where four hydraulic cranes manage a pair of 11 metre Vikal tenders, an 8.5 metre ski boat, six Jet Skis and four WaveRunners. Another tender sits below the fully enclosed foredeck. A water-sports room holds diving equipment and a drying cabinet for wetsuits, and there is immediate access to the sea via the lower lobby, where a hull door opens flat onto the water to create a small beach club platform at which Jet Skiers can dock.

When sport is finished for the day, relaxing entertainment can be found in the lower deck cinema, which is equipped for showing 3D films and has a bar and popcorn machine. The tiered sofas are upholstered in suede and easy to sink into, and the effect of portholes appears on the walls, so no natural light interferes with the show. A vast library of 3,600 films is available through the Kaleidescape system.

Nirvana is not only ideal for her owner and guests , she is also a first-rate charter vessel with all her interior and exterior spaces designed for carefree luxury. She is a big yacht, too, capable of crossing oceans. The twin 4000 series MTU main engines can push her along at a maximum 20 knots, while at a cruise of 14 knots her range is well over 5,000 nautical miles.

The yacht’s active and sport-loving family know the ambience that suits their lifestyle. In Sam Sorgiovanni they found a designer who successfully interpreted their passion with great style, while Oceanco skilfully turned it into reality. Back in July 2008 OceAnco began the work on the stunning 88-meter superyacht Nirvana (ex-project Y707). She was launched in 2012. The yacht's naval architecture was projected by Oceanco and Azure Naval Architects. Nirvana yacht's keel was laid in Zwijnenburg hull-building facility and her finishing is taking place at OceAnco.

Motor Yacht Nirvana by OceAnco is an explorer style vessel with six decks. She was designed by Sam Sorgiovanni , and has beautiful sleek lines harmoniously flowing to her main deck, where there is a large 7.5 m pool with an infinity edge and a bar for her owners and their guests. A helicopter pad can be found on the superyacht's sun-deck, as well.

Super Yacht Nirvana's interior is very spacious, offering accommodation in one Master suite, featuring an office and a private exterior deck area with a whirlpool. Further accommodation is offered in one VIP suite with a lounge and his & hers bathroom, as well as in four double VIP cabins.

NIRVANA Specifications

Each of the six decks has their own private exterior space, giving her the flexibility of being used as a private yacht, charter yacht or if her Owner wishes, for corporate functions. All interior and exterior are expected to be stylishly designed with the utmost luxury in mind. The interior and exterior spaces on every deck are interconnected through large sliding doors. This concept opens up the interior area to the outside deck area, making it even longer and giving guests the possibility of being both inside and outside at the same time.

Oceanco's Nirvana is the shipyard's first yacht with the MTU 20V 4000- series engines, characterized by impressive power. Although powerful, they are with reduced noise and economic fuel use. She will be able to reach a maximum speed of approximately 18.5 knots.

Nirvana is a custom sailing yacht launched in 2007 by Vitters Shipyard.

Vitters Shipyard is a well established and respected custom yacht builder situated in Zwartsluis, The Netherlands. The facility opened in 1990 and has delivered an impressive list of yachts, working with top designers, up to 75 meter in length.

Nirvana measures 53.48 metres in length, with a max draft of 10.00 metres and a beam of 11.51 metres.

Our yacht operating cost calculator is now on it’s third major revision. We start with actual yacht expense data from our yacht management accountants and then generate formulas to extrapolate out the budget for a wide range of yachts. We have been providing accounting services to large yachts for the past 18 years.

Our operating cost calculator is tuned for yachts from 80 to 600 feet. We find operating variables create the largest variances for yachts smaller than 100 feet and larger than 250 feet. We have tested the numbers the most in the range from 100 to 250 feet.

Our budget calculator factors in the fuel burn for a range of engine sizes typically seen installed on yachts by length. By dragging the green “fuel dockage” slider to the right you will increase the projected fuel burn rate and therefore the budget cost for fuel. Our default position would be for a typical displacement fuel burn. Position the slider in the 60-80% range for fuel projections for planning hulls.

Our default values produce a budget number that we believe is generous to run a yacht to a high standard. Perfect is a very expensive word to use in the yachting industry where standards are already high. Moving the crew and maintenance sliders to 80% will provide an “industry best” quality of crew and give them the maintenance budget to operate to a very high standard. If you need to go over the 80% area then you may have unusually labor intensive equipment on the yacht.

Yes, our yacht operating cost calculator can output a budget suitable for this situation. Adjust the owner use to 2 (minimum value), owner slider to 0, crew slider to 10%, Administration to 10%, Fuel and Dockage to 0, Maintenance to 10% and then Capital Repairs to 0. This will remove all of the large charges associated with owner use and vessel movement but leave the essential base maintenance and insurance in place.

Lift on and float in yacht transport is a popular way to transport yachts across large ocean passage. The yachts that this service certainly applies to are ones that may not have the motoring range or structural integrity for blue ocean cruising. The cost of transporting a yacht twice per year is put into our budget once the “Fuel Dockage” slider hits 75%. If your yacht has the range we recommend self-sufficient ocean passages whenever possible. Whilst the transport companies sell their services based upon reportedly well oiled operated schedules the reality is that your yacht may stay waiting for pickup for a week or more with no compensation due. When factoring in all secondary factors of self-sufficient passages (increased fuel, maintenance, potential storm damage, crew time off, extra delivery crew) compared with transporting your yacht (insurance, potential loading / unloading damage, loss of schedule control, no work whilst underway, crew flights, crew accommodation) we believe that there is a 100% premium associated with float in transport and a 75% premium with lift on transport compared with self-powered.

Abandoned yachts crash in value. We recommend that even if you are trying to sell your yacht that you use the yacht for a minimum of two weeks per year so that systems are tested and working every six months. There is nothing worse for a yacht than not being used. If you truly are not going to use the yacht then you should sell it immediately for the first genuine offer as every dollar you put into maintenance will not be recovered at the time of the sale.

We did not build this version with sailing yachts in mind. Early in our development of this version we decided to exclude sailing yachts as a few of the major cost drivers scale very differently for sailing yachts compared with motor yachts. For example: To calculate paint costs we reviewed the surface area of over 100 large yachts and created a formula for painted surface area to length. Sailing yachts just don’t scale in a consistent way. Similarly crew numbers don’t scale in the same manner that they do for motor yachts. If there is sufficient demand we may build a sailing selector switch into a future version of this tool.

We hate to hear when yacht owners were told by their broker to factor in 10% of the purchase price to operate the yacht. This over used saying is sadly right occasionally (particularly for newer yachts in the $20-30M range)… but just because a broken watch tells the right time twice a day you shouldn’t rely upon it to tell the time. As yachts get older their capital value decreases but their maintenance costs increase. There is no way that a fixed 10% of purchase cost rule can be true… if your broker told you this rule then you need a new yacht broker… we know some good ones. 😊

A $1.4 million vacation? Take a look inside a yacht that costs that much per week

The 255-foot superyacht Malia sold in 2023 with a price tag of $120 million.

But she can be yours for a fraction of the cost: $930,000 per week.

But with many large yacht charters, surcharges — for fuel, food, drinks, marina fees, onshore activities and special requests — are usually an additional 35% of the base price. 

Cruising in Europe also attracts a value-added tax of around 20% of the base fee, but this can vary by country. Crew gratuities are also between 10% to 20% of the charter fee.

All in, a week cruising the French Riviera on Malia costs a whopping $1,441,500.

For the price, Malia takes guests on stunning tours of the Mediterranean, from Monaco to the Italian Riviera, island-hopping from Sardinia and the Maddalena islands with stops in iconic French hubs like Saint-Tropez.

Up to 12 guests can sleep in the yacht's eight state rooms, including a master VIP suite, all with luxury ensuite bathrooms.

"The bedrooms are comparable to hotel rooms. You don't feel like you're on a yacht," said Sacha Williams, global charter marketing director at Northrop & Johnson, Malia's broker. "It's like you're in a floating hotel."

The main deck has a saloon with a bar and dining area illuminated by full-length windows, as well as an upper deck lounge featuring a striking glass chandelier and an extensive audio-visual system.

The decks are connected by an elevator. 

Like a hotel, the yacht has a gym and spa, the latter with a massage room, sauna and Turkish hammam bath.

"On a yacht this size, it's increasingly popular to have a hammam, steam room or sauna," Williams said. "Wellness is definitely a strong trend on all yachts now. The onboard spa therapist does all manner of treatments, not just massage and facials, but all things beauty-related. You could spend an entire day in that space."

There's also a glass-edged infinity pool on the main deck and a glass-bottomed Jacuzzi on the sundeck, plus an outdoor theater. 

Tenders and toys

Travelers may pay seven figures for a week on this yacht, but few stay on it the whole time.

Malia comes with additional leisure vessels, including several tenders that guests can take to shore.

They can also take a deep-sea fishing trip on Malia's 46-foot-extreme sportfishing tender. Additionally, crew can take guests up to six feet underwater in a shark-shaped submersible made by Seabreacher, which seats one pilot and one passenger. 

"The fishing tender is quite unique, especially in the Mediterranean, as you tend to see these a lot more in the Caribbean and Bahamas, where sportfishing is no big deal. But imagine how cool that would be to just take the children out for the afternoon and go and catch some fish," said Williams. 

Crew members can also teach guests to use Fliteboard motorized surfboards and to explore underwater with Seabobs. Those who want to relax can sit back for towable joy rides in the sun.

Malia's "toy" inventory also includes jet and water skis, plus paddleboards, pedalboards , wakeboards, kayaks, and an inflatable climbing frame with a walkway.

"This particular owner is all about fun. He wanted to make sure that he had every possible guest request catered for" said Williams. "You don't see a Fliteboard on every yacht ... they are in high demand."

Captain and crew

A portion of the charter price goes to paying for the 21-member crew, which includes a captain, engineering and hospitality teams, and several chefs. Some crew members double as personal trainers and have musical skills to entertain in the evenings.

"Guests may never even see some of the crew members, like the engineering team," said Williams. "There are people working through the night to ensure the guests' safety. Some will be more involved with the navigation and planning, and arranging berths in ports. The more senior interior crew will also do the bookkeeping, as there's a lot of money being spent to ensure that everyone's having a great time."

"The best way I can describe them is like swans," said Williams. "They just glide around."

Malia's itineraries are "hyper detailed," Williams said. The yacht's broker and the captain agree on an itinerary that considers guest preferences, sea conditions and weather forecasts.

But the captain can also consider requests to modify the schedule mid-charter — for example, if guests are enjoying a particular location and want to stay longer, Williams said:

"That's the beauty of chartering a yacht."

Who books vacations like this

Malia's guests tend to be North American, European and Middle Eastern, Williams said. 

Typically, they have built their wealth in highly niche areas of business, she said. "I've always been surprised by some of the North American clients as to how they've generated this amount of wealth from selling items that can appear quite banal. But I guess the size of the country means that you can become very successful selling something as simple as eggs or screws," she said.

"Sometimes you'll see the principal — the person footing the bill — charter Malia for a few weeks, and invite different groups during that time. One week, they'll be with their friends, and then the friends will move on and then their family will join, then their parents."

But many guests book the yacht for family vacations and celebrations, she said.

"They may be celebrating a birthday or wedding anniversary, or just a family get-together. On a yacht the size of Malia, you can have the grandparents, the parents and the children."
