Adeel Khan: Charting an Unconventional Journey from LUMS to International Waters

  • News & Events

Sail4Kashmir

From the classrooms of LUMS to the open waters of international sailing, Adeel Khan (BSc 2002), a graduate of Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering, has charted an inspiring and unconventional journey marked by passion, resilience, and a steadfast commitment to making a difference. An accomplished sailor since the age of 12, Adeel has not only represented Pakistan on numerous prestigious platforms, including national championships and international competitions but has also harnessed his love for sailing to champion social causes close to his heart.

Adeel, a Kashmiri now based in London, teaches sailing on his boat, ‘Sail4Kashmir’, and supports Kashmiri community charities aimed at empowering underrepresented voices both in the UK and across Kashmir.

Reflecting on his journey, Adeel shared how he first got into sailing, “I lived in the city of lights, Karachi. While living closer to the sea, I had the opportunity to sail since the age of 12.” He joined the Pakistan national team at 13, won the Pakistani nationals at 15 in the junior league, and again at 18 in the senior league. He has also claimed victories at the British, Irish, and Middle East Opens. ‘Sail4Kashmir’ was initiated as a reaction to the Indian state's takeover of Jammu and Kashmir. Adeel explained, “I wanted to amplify the voices of my community through my sport and attempt to bring together people affected by the conflict in a mutual dialogue.” He has been professionally involved in this area as an international expert on interfaith dialogue since 2010, with work in Qatar and later in the UK in religious education.

Adeel attributes much of his success and the opportunities he has received to his experience at LUMS. “It gave me the confidence to pursue excellence in academics,” he noted, which led him to further his education at Cambridge University. He highlighted the value of lateral thinking, “Solving problems isn’t just about jugaar, but also a creative way of being a problem solver.” These skills, he says, have been crucial for his career in both sports and work.

When asked about his motivation to continue sailing and teaching, Adeel remarked, “I have been sailing for so long that it is truly second nature to me. Sometimes, I feel more comfortable on the water than on land.” Sailing has also helped him navigate his neurodivergent condition, providing a calmness to his inner world that he cherishes, “I am extremely lucky to have sailing in my life.”

His journey has had its ups and downs, but Adeel feels blessed to have reached the world championships, where he represents both Pakistan and Kashmir. “The organising committee at this event was inspired by the Olympics,“ he said, referring to the inclusion of athletes from non-recognised and refugee-status countries.

For current LUMS students and alumni considering unconventional career paths, Adeel offers this advice, “Always solve problems in life like you do in C++ code. There will be exceptions raised by your algorithm, but don't panic and keep trying to solve the problem or error. After all, it’s your own creation; it’s your own world.”

Recalling his experiences in world sports, Adeel emphasises the importance of ‘resilience, patience, precision, and taking caring of your well-being’. Looking ahead, he is focused on improving his world standing with his sailing partner, Roger Jeffs from Great Britain. They are working on a self-regulated training regime to climb the world rankings each year. Additionally, Adeel plans to enhance access to sailing for residents of Northwest London from diverse backgrounds. His journey serves as an inspiration to how perseverance and creativity can lead to extraordinary achievements, inspiring current and future LUMS students.

A dramatic rescue operation unfolded off the coast of Australia on Tuesday after two sailors were stranded on a yacht overnight in extreme weather conditions.

The sailors, a 60-year-old man and a 48-year-old woman, were rescued in a multi-agency operation after their 19m yacht, the Spirit of Mateship, starting taking on water due to a mechanical issue.

The rescue operation was initiated at 1pm on Monday after the Spirit of Mateship sent out a distress beacon, and it took several hours for helicopters to locate the vessel. In the meantime, the yacht lost power and communication capabilities, and was battered by strong winds of up to 90kmph.

Ben Flight, duty manager at the Australian Maritime Safety Authority Response Centre, said a helicopter was able to establish radio contact with the yacht and fly above it but was unable to retrieve the passengers due to the challenging conditions.

A subsequent rescue attempt was also abandoned due to rough seas, leaving the sailors on board to endure a "horrible" night at sea, Mr Flight said.

“They were sort of just at the mercy of the elements. They would have been moving around uncomfortably. It would have been particularly windy, noisy, probably quite wet as well.

“I don’t imagine they would have got any rest overnight, so I imagine they’d be quite tired and very relieved to be rescued,” he was quoted as saying by CNN.

The NSW Water Police vessel Nemesis was able to make contact with the sailors at 1am on Tuesday, arriving at the scene at 3am.

However, extreme weather conditions prevented the crew from rescuing them.

Anthony Brazzill of the New South Wales  police described the conditions as "terrible”. The sailors had to jump onto a rescue boat one at a time, with Mr Brazzill praising the experienced mariners who executed the rescue.

"It’s a matter of just basically timing it,” he said. “Get the person to jump, as they’re coming in, get them to jump and catch, doing one at a time, obviously making sure that people have the life jackets on.”

The yacht had drifted 70 nautical miles overnight and the passengers were unable to bring the sails down, Mr Brazzill said.

“The yacht was running away from us as we were chasing it down the coast which obviously made it a challenge.”

File. Spirit of Mateship in Sydney on 23 November 2013

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority said an emergency alert from the yacht was received on Monday, and a distress beacon was activated about 150km offshore from Nowra.

The sailors were rescued around 7.25am on Tuesday and were travelling to Sydney on board the Nemesis for medical assessment.

They were fatigued but uninjured and were expected to land at the NSW Police Marine Area Command late Tuesday night.

The Spirit of Mateship has taken part in several Sydney to Hobart races since 2013. The yacht was left in the ocean, with Mr Brazzill stating that their priority is to "save lives, not save boats”.

Land Yachting uses 3-wheeled vehicles attached to a sail which can reach speeds in excess of 40mph. The rider sits or lays down, close to the ground, using feet to control the front wheel for steering and hands to control the sail.

Land Yachts can travel at between 2 and 3 times the speed of the wind yet can be propelled by winds of less than 10mph.

  • Easy to learn
  • Power is free
  • Suitable for all ages
  • Wind and weather dependant
  • Need empty spaces to sail in safety

Training & Qualifications

Training is offered at BFSLYC registered training centres. There are three levels required before qualifying as a pilot.

Level One – Safety rules and basic practical sailing

Level Two – Rigging a yacht, pre-sailing safety checks and a wide range of sailing skills

Level Three – Sail competently and safely. Understand racing rules.

Pilot’s License – A written theory test is followed by a practical test. Once licenced you are opermitted to race.

Clubs and training schools provide yachts, goggles and helmets. Students often progress to purchase their own yacht. Common types includes class 3, class 5, leisure yachts and parakarts.

Land Yachting – Sailing for Those who prefer land

September 30, 2019 Rob Sayers Experience Days , Extreme Outdoor Activities , Fun Outdoor Activities , Land Activities , Outdoor Sports , Physical Challenges 0

land yachting uk

Blasting down the beach with your backside inches above the ground makes land yachting one of the most exhilarating sports I have tried. Powered purely by the wind in my sails, I joined a posse of stockbrokers who were intent on fulfilling their need for speed.

I tried land yachting as an outdoor activity gift from my wife through Red Letter Days . Activity gifts are one of the best ways to guarantee successful gift giving, at least for me.

What is Land Yachting?

The land yacht had three wheels for stability. In case you didn’t realise, it can be quite a challenge to get a four wheeled vehicle to have all four wheels evenly on the ground unless you put in some decent suspension. Land yachts don’t have suspension, and so you feel all of the bumps and bounces. Traction is provided through wind blowing in a large triangular sail attached to a mast mounted at the front of the land yacht. You sit in a very reclined position and hold onto a rope that pulls the sail in or releases it.

Do I need to be able to Sail to Control a Land Yacht?

Sailing a land yacht is far simpler than sailing a boat. There is no risk of waves, capsizing or falling overboard. Also, because you are lying down in the land yacht, there is no risk of being hit by the sail boom when you tack across the wind.

Your instructor will tell you the circuit for the day in relation to the wind and the technique for getting around corners to keep the wind. All you have to do is pull the sail rope and steer to avoid any of the other land yachts, dogs, people on the beach.

How to Control a Land Yacht

You steer a land yacht with two pedals, left and right. Some land yachts have hand levers for steering, but that only leaves one hand free for pulling the sail rope.

If you are facing the right way, all you need to do to get the land yacht moving is to pull the sail rope tight and keep it held tight. You musn’t loop the rope around your hands though, because if the rope pulls too much you could get rope burns or cuts. Land yacht racers usually wear gloves to protect their hands.

The tighter you pull the sail rope, the faster the land yacht will go, as long as you are not heading directly into the wind. As with any sailing sport, you have to work out which direction the wind is blowing to get the most speed. If you get it right, you find yourself hurtling down the beach with a rather huge grins on your face. Tight turns can lead to flying along on only two wheels, which is a bit hairy but awesome fun.

The Thrill of Land Yachting at High Speed

My Land Yachting Gift Experience

Whenever I get a gift experience I always open it with a sense of trepidation, wondering what experience I will be getting myself into. The Tiger Moth flight was a bit scary, mostly because people kept telling me that they had had dreams of me crashing and also because you didn’t get parachutes.

I was very excited when I opened the Red Letter Days envelope with a gift voucher for land yachting. It was something I had wanted to try for quite a while. I booked the two hour session on a beach near Rye in Kent and eagerly awaited that windy day.

It was easy to find, not least becuase of the big van plastered with signs for the land yachting company. The guys running the day were busy setting up the land yachts, which were left lying on their sides so that the wind didn’t blow them down the beach before time. There were quite a few rather nice cars parked at the side of the road, and talking to the other peope waiting most of them were stockbrokers. Land yachting must be one of those sports that attract people who have a need for that adrenalin rush. Engineering doesn’t necessarily give you such a buzz, but using some of the things you design certainly does.

We were given a brief training session on safety and how to control the land yacht. Then it was pretty much in you get and of you go. At first, it was a bit tricky getting around the first corner because you had to cross the head wind. If you didn’t turn quickly enough, you slowed down and stopped facing the wind. No amount of tugging on that sail rope would get you moving. the instructors stood on that corner to help get you moving again. After a few laps, I got the hang of it. At this point the instructors called me over to the centre to stop. I wondered what was up, and then they increased the height of the mast, which in turn unfurled more sail. This meant more speed! Awesome!

I was back out into the circuit and amazed by the increase of speed from increasing the sail size. One by one, the other bankers were pulled over to have a mast extension. Things then became quite competitive. Overtaking and racing ensued. I got such a thrill from overtaking others and a great sense of satisfaction if one of them lost the wind on a corner.

All in all, the two hours whizzed by and I was left wanting more.

How can I get to try Land Yachting?

You do need a licence to sail a land yacht on a public beach in the UK. The best way is to find a land yacht racing club.

If you want to buy your own land yacht, Blokarts are the most popular brand. The Potty is a UK land yacht design that will fit into the boot of your car.

If you want to try land yachting, you can buy land yachting gift vouchers from Red Letter Days. .

Where's best to land yacht?

Welcome to mini land yachts and land yachting.

This website will hopefully provide you with lots of useful information about Minilandyachts; provide answers to some of your questions, and inspire you to have a go at sailing on land.

Introduction

Sandyachting / Landyachting / Landsailing / Dirtboating are all words used to describe the same activity, the sailing of wheeled craft on land.

In the UK we tend to use the term Sandyachting, because that's what we do... sail on sand.

The sport has a long history, mainly because - wherever there is a beach suitable for sandyachting - ie flat, hard and preferably dry sand - someone will have sailed something on it, and they will invariably have been inspired by tales of someone else who sailed something similar, a decade or two earlier.

If you are interested in the History of Sandyachting and it's development in Britain, there is a hardback book with that title, 210 pictures and 201 pages, written in 1990, with copies still available at £20 including postage to mainland UK, direct from the author [email protected] .

The first Minilandyacht was the Windskate, in 1975. It was an immediate success, but the landyachting community are a competitive group of people, in that they generally like to sail faster than their friends, and - as a sweeping generalisation - the bigger the yacht, the faster it will go, so the little Windskate was quickly stretched - for racing purposes - and became Class 5.

The current wave of enthusiasm for Minilandyachts started at The Americas Landsailing Cup event at Ivanpah, USA, in 2000, when Jean-Philippe Krischer of Seagull (France) launched the Ludic.

If you would like to see a selection of other landyachts, visit the Seagull website seagull etc etc

The Ludic inspired numerous copies - of which the Potty Minilandyacht was but one - and, as with the Windskate, the little Minis were then stretched - for racing purposes - until the Sport's International Governing Body (FISLY) introduced a new Class for the Minilandyachts in 2012, with a specification that said the footprint of all 3 wheels must fit with a rope 5.60m long. The Minilandyachts Class was subdivided in 2017 into Sport - Mini Class 5s - and Spirit, the stretched original little Minis. The Sport Minis seem to have died out; the Spirit Minis are evolving quickly, and the original little Minis have been left behind.

The little Minis are much smaller than the yachts that now race in the Minilandyachts Class - and accordingly are hopelessly uncompetitive - but the vast majority of folk who show interest in the concept of the Minilandyachts are not interested in racing... they simply want to enjoy sailing on their local beach, for the sheer fun of it. If that includes you, then you're in luck, because this website is aimed at you.
