Riva 50 Race

Riva – 50 Metre Race

SY65-Spring-2020

Riva 50 Race

“Race”, is the name the owner chose. This jewel is the latest from the Riva boat yard which was founded by Carlo Riva . Today’s 50 metre is built in steel and aluminium at Riva’s Superyachts Division in Ancona which the yard’s in house engineering team drew up with input from Ferretti Group and Officina Italiana Design which has an exclusive design contract applicable to all Riva yachts. The owner contributed during the initial phases and requested custom built decor to the interior layout according to his personal tastes and chose free standing furniture for the exteriors. The exterior design work by Mauro Micheli and Sergio Beretta offers timeless classic styling so as to avoid falling for what is currently labelled as trendy one moment, and is gone the very next. Long lasting traits instead like the aquamarine used for the waterline, embellishing steel elements applied to some of the structural parts with mahogany strips lining the bulwarks and the toe and grab rails.

Original video by the shipyard

Liberal use of this precious essence is also found below decks where this wood’s dark colour prevails over other components in polished steel, leather and some of the furniture’s diverse grey hues as well as several other details such as precious carpets that are deployed to protect Apuan white marble flooring. The same stone essentially but of the statuarietto variety, enriches coffee table tops and lines bathroom walls with darker streaks which highlight the contrast with the furniture’s mahogany lining and lacquered grey finishes. This styling is repeated along each of this 50 metres Riva yacht’s five decks which sports something just below 500 GRT in spite of the numerous liveable areas the owner and his guests can enjoy. The passage ways installed enhance an already enviable sense of privacy where separate corridors for crew and guests are the norm.

Riva 50 Race

Stepping on board from the stern into a large cockpit with Nomex® , free standing furniture which is light in terms of weight and is practically insensitive to heat and cold and highly durable through time. It is generally used at best in the aerospace industry. A large shoe basket, an icemaker and a pop-up 55” television set complete the picture. The interiors, engine room or beach area can be accessed from here as well. The beach area comprises two platforms one on port side the other on starboard side resulting in a larger surface area engendering greater contact with the surrounding waters normally accessed by using the sets of carbon steps on each side, which can be also deployed to launch and recover a Williams Dieseljet 625 tender. Crossing the threshold leading into the interiors, visiting guests are confronted with an ample bright open space featuring large window like ports where there’s plenty of room for a living area equipped with a leather sofa seating up to eight, a television cabinet, and a dining area with a cut glass table and a seating capacity of up to ten adjacent to a pair of lateral doors opening out towards the exteriors. Enormous cut glass sliding doors seem to effectively reduce the dividing line between the surroundings and the numerous mirrored surface areas creating en ever growing play of bounding light which seems to increase the volume of the interiors further.

The bow area along the main deck reserved for the owner’s quarters covers a surface area of 70 square metres. The layout comprises three separate spots; a foyer with private study, a lounge with media room and the master cabin with bathroom en suite. Special care has been taken to dampen noise levels in the master cabin. At cruising speeds noise levels are never more than 40 Decibel. All of the four guest cabins, three of which are doubles and one is a twin, are situated along the lower deck as the crew quarters are. Obviously access to each is separate from the other. The crew’s quarters are inclusive of dinette, galley, cold cellar and storage facility. The captain’s cabin is situated adjacent to the helm controls station along the main deck which also hosts a covered living area, with sofa, armchairs, wine cellar and thanks to a dumb waiter this area can double as a place in which to enjoy evening drinks and exquisite dishes in the exterior dining area featuring a corian table for 14 and a pair of electric windscreens on each side.

Astern of this but separated by a 180° swivel and pop up television there’s a furnished area featuring custom built sofas and armchairs. To enjoy even greater privacy when tied up in a port, the bow lounge can be deployed instead. Beneath this there’s a hangar in which to stow a rescue craft and several water toys. The sundeck covers an area of 120 square metres, 90 of these are shaded by a hardtop. A sun bathing spot, a pool with an incorporated hydro massage, a dining zone with BBQ and a rotating pop up television set complete the picture. Every interior and exterior section sports Lutron domotic technology through which you can also exploit diversely lit scenarios accordingly. With a pair of 1,000KW MTU 8V4000M63 engines, Riva “Race” can reach a top speed of 15.5 knots and at 11.0 knots it can cover 3,500 nautical miles without having to refuel.

The technologies on the Riva Race

As a highly sophisticated yacht, Riva “Race” comes with the latest innovation in technologies, custom developed by two Italians highly specialized companies: Videoworks and Team Italia.

Videoworks ( www.videoworksgroup.com ) has designed the AV, IT, TV/Sat, CCTV, IP telephony and home automation system. The AV-IT system was designed according to the philosophy of a distributed system – every cabin/hall has a local rack containing the AV electronics. The audio system in the internal and external premium areas has the James Loudspeaker marine speakers. IP telephony is based on a Panasonic switchboard with fixed and cordless terminals.

The IT infrastructure (cabled and Wi-Fi) is made entirely with Cisco hardware, a world leader in terms of reliability and performance. IP telephony is based on a Panasonic switchboard with fixed and cordless terminals.

Thanks to its considerable experience and long-term partnership with Lutron (a world leading company in the production of light control systems), Videoworks has designed and built the on-board home automation system, i.e. the intelligent control of lights and blinds in the guest area, which makes time on board even more comfortable and pleasant.

The CCTV system is made up entirely of professional Panasonic products. It includes 5 high-resolution IP cameras and a network recorder for recording video flows and archiving them in encrypted form.

Additionally, the satellite TV receiving system has a double antenna with arbitrator, which guarantees optimal signal without blind spots.

Team Italia ( www.team-italia.it ) has designed the innovative I-Bridge® solution with multicontrol and 38” full HD stretched display.

Navigation is made easier by two integrated side flaps and by the exclusive TEAM Italia EMAS (Electronic Moving Assistant System), which processes the data from the 3D sensors and makes manoeuvring the yacht easier

New Riva 50Metri launched, a masterpiece of boundless beauty.

The third unit of this fantastic megayacht enters the water in Ancona at the Riva Superyachts Division.     Ancona, May 23rd, 2023 – A new Riva 50Metri shines bright with beauty and elegance, ready to ply the world’s oceans. The launch of the third unit of this ‘Made in Italy’ marvel in the yachting world took place over the weekend at the Riva Superyachts Division in Ancona . A magnificent heir to the famous ‘Caravelle’ and ‘Atlantic’ series motor yachts, Riva 50Metri combines the inborn majesty of a megayacht with Riva’s classic stylistic hallmarks, bringing together the finest craftsmanship with the most advanced technology.   Riva 50metri is the result of collaboration between Officina Italiana Design , the firm founded by Mauro Micheli and Sergio Beretta , the Strategic Product Committee led by Piero Ferrari , and the Ferretti Group Engineering Department.   With a steel displacement hull and an aluminium superstructure , Riva 50Metri extends across five decks , has a maximum beam of nine metres , and can accommodate 10 guests and 9 crew members . Her profile is defined by three horizontal bands running from stern to bow, which taken together with the hull's metallic silver livery give it a uniquely dynamic look. The clean, elegant lines are pointed up by the clever use of materials, that unmistakable mixture of steel, glass and mahogany which skilfully blends legendary hallmarks with an ultramodern design vision.   Everything on board Riva 50Metri is designed so that the owner and their guests can take every advantage of the settings and enjoy the water and outdoor areas to the fullest. The indoor-outdoor dialogue creates spacious areas for relaxing and entertaining whatever the occasion. One example is the main lounge , entered through a door that opens up completely to form a palatial open space with the cockpit, which flows in its turn into the lounge forward and a wide corridor to starboard. The 120 sq m sundeck , of which 90 sheltered by the hard top, offers guests the choice of relaxing in unparalleled comfort in the generous sunbathing area, or around the dining table with barbecue, in the relaxation area with sofas and pop-up TV, or in the gorgeous hydromassage pool . The generous interiors welcome guests with refined decor inspired by Riva’s unique story: polished steel components and chiaroscuro interplays between tones of grey and mahogany segue from stern to bow, creating a continuum across all the settings, with a design that perfectly incorporates function and aesthetics.   The launch of Riva 50Metri at the Riva Superyachts Division in Ancona was attended by the EMEA-based owner, who is a huge fan of the brand and already owns another Riva. Also under construction in the Riva Superyachts Division is Riva 54 Metri, the brand's largest and newest project, scheduled for delivery in 2025.

The legend enters a new dimension

" I'd like to try and cruise on her... ", was the wish Eng. Carlo Riva expressed when the renderings of the first Riva 50-meter mega yacht were shown to him. Since September 2014, when in Monaco Ferretti Group's Top Management announced the creation of the ' Superyachts Division ', the ideas and projects revolving around brand's new light alloy fleet have developed rapidly.

The dream of building light alloy, displacement Riva superyachts, entirely customizable by the Owner in terms of interior outfitting and decor, takes forward the ambition and ingenuity that between the 1960s and '70s pushed by Carlo Riva. Today this dream has turned into an increasingly tangible and exciting reality. Indeed, a Riva engineering and design team entirely devoted to the ' Superyachts Division ' settled down at the Group's Ancona shipyard. Riva's ' Superyachts Division ' offers its Owners two different lines, using the same naval platforms.

The first line will draw inspiration from the brand's legendary history, and from the class and perfection of true yachting masterpieces like the famous ' Caravelle ', conceived by Eng. Riva in 1964. The second sporty line will feature details reminding of the last generation of Riva coupe yachts, the one to which the recent 76' Perseo and 88' Domino Super belong. It will be just from these latter models' slender and modern look that the second line's more aggressive profile and lines will draw inspiration. Each of the two lines will be available in four different sizes: 50 meters, 60 meters, 70 meters and 90 meters in length.

Riva 50 Metri 'Fifty' launched

Riva 50 Metri 'Fifty' yacht launched

This is the magnificent new Riva 50 Metri M/Y 'Fifty' that has been launched.

Inspired by the legendary yacht designer Carl Riva's work on the celebrated Atlantic and Caravelle motor yachts of the 60s and 70s, the Fifty will now ride the waves in style.

She is the first 50 meters superyacht from Riva and was launched at their shipyard in Ancona, Italy, in a private ceremony.

The yacht has a maximum beam of nine meters to deliver an outstanding cruising experience.

She reflects Riva's aesthetic hallmarks and classy styling with lots of sophistication with an exterior consisting of steel, mahogany, and glass.

'Glorious page in Riva's history'

The chief executive of Ferretti Group, Alberto Galassi, said: "Once upon a time, the expression 'written on water' was used to describe actions that have a fleeting impact. But what we have written on the water is another unforgettable and glorious page in Riva's history.

"My recommendation for those in search of great emotions is to take a look at this new Riva and the breath-taking way she shines with style, legend, and innovation."

He added: "All thanks to the talent and expertise of the workers involved."

The Riva 50 Metri is the result of collaboration between Ferretti Group’s Strategic Product Committee and Officina Italiana Design - founded by Sergio Beretta and Mauro Micheli - and the exclusive designer of all Riva models.

She now reflects Riva Superyacht's vision to deliver an outstanding cruising experience that is defined by comfort and attention to detail.

Evolved vision of life at sea

The yacht also demonstrates an evolved vision of life at sea - the same values that made Riva a legendary name in international yachting for the last 179 years.

She has a steel displacement hull and aluminum superstructure and will comfortably accommodate up to 10 guests in four suites, and nine crew.

With a gross tonnage of 499, she offers the comfort and great living experience that comes with larger superyachts.

The onboard space has been optimized so the owner has maximum privacy, while allowing the crew the freedom to move around her five decks to perform everyday operations.

The Riva 50 Metri 'Fifty' has a cruising speed of 14 knots, and a top speed of 15.5 knots.

Cabin spans 70 square meters

The interior has been customized by the owner and their cabin spans 70 square meters with a study, private lounge, and a large bedroom.

The decor is dominated by grey tones with steel and mahogany trims that have been combined with marble and leather.

Second Riva 50m superyacht Fifty delivered

Riva’s second 50 metre superyacht Fifty has been delivered to its owner after first hitting the water at a private ceremony in March.

It comes as the Italian builder used the Cannes Yachting Festival to announce that the third hull in the series has been sold and is now under construction in Italy.

  • Race : Inside Riva's first 50 metre superyacht

Speaking about Fifty , Ferretti Group chief executive Alberto Galassi previously said: “ Fifty is the demonstration that we Italians know how to imagine and realise masterpieces like no one else in the world. And at this difficult time, my thanks goes to everyone whose skills and efforts have helped build this magnificent ship.”

Reminiscent of the classic Carlo Riva motor yachts, Riva’s 50 Metri flagship superyacht was designed by Officina Italiana Design in collaboration with Riva’s product strategy committee and developed by the Riva Superyacht Division.

With a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, the Riva 50 Metri’s exterior features materials including mahogany, steel and glass, as well as a “blue-tinged shark grey” colour. Spread across four decks, the Riva 50 Metri features accommodation for a total of 12 guests in five cabins, including a main deck master.

Other features include a sundeck with a Jacuzzi, stern tender garage and foredeck storage area suitable for a pair of Jet Skis. The galley is located on the lower deck, while a central dumb waiter services all four decks.

It comes after the first Riva 50 Metri superyacht, Race , first hit the water in 2019 .

Entrepreneur tied to missing tycoon mike lynch shares theory about why doomed yacht sank.

An entrepreneur who’s connected to missing British tech tycoon Mike Lynch theorized that the 160-foot superyacht Bayesian may have sunk because of its massive mast.

Scott Painter, who took over Lynch’s multi-billion dollar software company called Autonomy, founded in 1996, said Lynch’s yacht may have been more vulnerable during Monday morning’s tornado off the coast of Sicily because of its over 240-foot-tall mast.

The Bayesian, which capsized with 22 people on board had “an unusually large mast” for a single-masted ship, Painter told Daily Mail.

Scott Painter

“The mast was the ultimate sailor’s bragging right,” Painter told the outlet. “That mast must’ve been over 240 feet tall, which is either the tallest or second tallest in the world.”

Painter added: “That could certainly contribute to a capsize as it would destabilize the yacht. And if it were to lean over too far, it could absolutely capsize the yacht.”

Painter, who acquired the Autonomy brand in 2021 and developed it into an electric vehicle subscription company, says he received panicked calls from loved ones who heard of the sunken ship and feared he was on board.

Sunken yacht in Italy

“We are praying for positive news,” Painter said. “Mike is a legend and the loss of him and his daughter would truly be tragic.”

Painter also confirmed that Bauer, Autonomy’s chairman and president, was not on the luxury yacht when it went down.

“Mr. Bauer is safe in Munich and was not involved at all,” Painter said. ‘It’s pretty crazy news. That boat was exceptional. It doesn’t make much sense.”

ship

The 160-foot luxury sailboat with 22 people aboard sank off the port of Porticello when a violent storm struck at sunrise Monday, the Italian coast guard said.

Fifteen of the ship’s passengers and crew have survived, including a mother who was holding her 1-year-old daughter above her head to keep her from drowning.

Police dive teams were searching Monday and Tuesday for six of the passengers who have been missing since the ship capsized, though the search has been slow as the ship now sits 50 meters below the surface, where divers can only stay underwater for 12 minutes, officials said Tuesday.

What to know after a tornado sank the yacht Bayesian off the coast of Sicily, leaving one dead and six missing:

  • A superyacht capsized off the coast of Sicily after a tornado hit the area early Monday, killing one passenger and leaving five others missing — including Michael Lynch, a tech tycoon known as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” officials said.
  • Lynch had invited guests from the legal firm that represented him, Clifford Chance, and Invoke Capital, his own company, on the voyage,  according to the Telegraph .
  • Captain James Catfield, who piloted the 184-foot, British-flagged craft, was among the 15 crew members and passengers to survive after the tornado struck Monday before sunrise.
  • Security camera footage shot from 650 feet from where the  Bayesian sank Monday  shows it slowly disappearing.
  • Italian authorities have said the chances of the passengers surviving the disaster was very small, but “never say never.”

One body has been recovered  and identified as the on-board chef, officials said.

In addition to Lynch, the missing include Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter Hannah, as well as Johnathan Bloomer, a chairman at Morgan Stanley International, Bloomer’s wife, Judy, and a top New York City attorney Christopher Morvillo and his wife, jewelry designer Neda Morvillo.

Lynch, who is often referred to as the “British Bill Gates” and “British Steve Jobs,” was acquitted two months ago by a San Francisco jury of fraud charges linked to the sale of his software company, Autonomy, to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion in 2011.

The sale had cemented Lynch’s reputation as Britain’s answer to the Apple magnate — but it quickly turned sour after HP downgraded Autonomy’s value by $8.8 billion.

Several of the guests aboard his yacht were lawyers with the firm, Clifford Chance, who helped Lynch win his fraud trial.

The group was said to be celebrating Lynch’s acquittal following the three-month trial.

Another lawyer who represented Lynch, Ayla Ronald, survived the horrifying incident alongside her partner, their firm said in a statement.

Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, was rescued from the wreckage and is recovering from her injuries.

Why did the superyacht Bayesian sink?

Hatches and doors left open overnight on the superyacht may have caused it to capsize, a sailing expert has said.

Sam Jefferson, editor of magazine Sailing Today, said that such incidents are ‘incredibly rare’, describing the chances of a vessel being hit by a waterspout as ‘minuscule’.

It is believed the vessel was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout.

Weather records show temperatures reached around 33C the day before the sinking, which may have led to the people on board to leave the doors open.

Mr Jefferson said: ‘I would have said that the boat got hit very hard by the wind, it was pinned over on its side.

‘I imagine all the doors were open because it was hot, so there were enough hatches and doors open that it filled with water very quickly and sank like that.

‘The reason it got pinned over so hard was because the mast is huge. It acted almost like a sail. (It) pushed the boat hard over on its side.

‘(The boat) filled with water before it could right. This is all speculation, but that’s the only logical explanation.’

In pictures: Divers facing rescue challenge in Sicily

Specialist divers continued their search for six people who remain missing in the water.

Divers of the Vigili del Fuoco, the Italian Corps. of Firefighters, are pictured on a small boat in Porticello near Palermo, on August 20, 2024 a day after the British-flagged luxury yacht Bayesian sank. Specialist divers launched a fresh search for six people, including UK tech tycoon Mike Lynch and the chairman of Morgan Stanley International, missing since their yacht capsized off the Italian island of Sicily. The Bayesian, which had 22 people aboard including 10 crew, was anchored some 700 metres from port before dawn when it was struck by a waterspout, a sort of mini tornado. Divers ‘listening for timed banging noise, similar to Titan submarine’

METRO GRAPHICS Yacht Air Pocket Graphic

Divers could be listening out for a ‘timed banging noise’ as they continue to scour the wreck of the superyacht off Sicily’s coast to find six missing people.

Dr Jean-Baptiste Souppez, who teaches mechanical, biomedical and design engineering at Aston University, said: ‘A sign the rescuers may be looking for is a banging noise at regular intervals.

‘This is common practice on submarines, and was one of the signs the search mission for the Titan submarine was looking for after it went missing last year.’

Whatever is left of Bayesian is currently 164ft underwater, posing a challenge to rescue teams.

There is still slim possibility that air pockets exist within the sunken sailboat, and the trapped passengers are still alive.

But Dr Souppez said such possibility was ‘simply impossible to predict’.

Former school of Mike Lynch’s daughter ‘shocked’ by tragedy

The former school of Hannah Lynch, Mike Lynch’s daughter, said its ‘thoughts are with their family and everyone involved’ as the pair remain missing at sea.

A spokesperson for Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith, in west London, said: ‘We are all incredibly shocked by the news that Hannah and her father are among those missing in this tragic incident.

‘Our thoughts are with their family and everyone involved as we await further updates.’

Crew survivor ‘spared by grace of God’

The mother of one of the rescued Bayesian crew members said she is ‘beyond relieved’ that her daughter’s life was spared.

Heidi Randall, the mother of Leah Randall, told Sky News: ‘I am beyond relieved that my daughter’s life was spared by the grace of God.

‘It does not make it any easier living with the heartache of those who have lost their lives or are missing.

‘My very deepest condolences to the chef’s family as they formed a great friendship.’

Haunting final Instagram post of chef before he died

This is Ricardo Thomas’ haunting post on Instagram – just 10 days before he died off the coast of Sicily after.

Mr Thomas had been working on the superyacht as a chef when the tornado struck. His body was recovered from the water near the site, more than 24 hours later.

His last picture on Instagram shows the sun setting over the sea near Santa Marina Salina, one of the main towns on Salina, one of the Aeolian Islands.

There is no caption accompanying the post, but since yesterday a number of people have commented, paying their tributes.

One wrote: ‘What a Last Photo Brotha RIP.’

Another survivor named

The Italian Coastguard has confirmed the name of another crew member of Bayesian who survived.

Spokesperson Vincenzo Zagarola said Leo Eppel was on board the sailboat that sank in the early hours of Monday.

Two more survivors named

Two more survivors of the Bayesian yacht disaster have been named as Leah Randall and Katja Chicken.

The two women are South African, Sky News reported, and they were members of the crew on the boat.

Captain of rescue ship says yacht sank in ‘two minutes’

Captain Karsten Borner, who brought survivors of the Bayesian disaster on board his own boat, has said he took precautions to save his own vessel in the storm.

Again speaking to news agency Reuters, he said he made an effort to keep his Dutch-flagged ship steady before noticing something was wrong with the yacht nearby.

He told the agency: ‘I don’t absolutely know what they did. I only know that they went flat with a mast on the water and that they sank in two minutes.’

Borner blamed unusually warm sea temperatures for the extreme weather on Monday morning, which he describes as ‘very violent, very intense, a lot of water and I think a turning system like a tornado’.

Hannah Lynch’s school releases statement

Hannah Lynch, the 18-year-old daughter of Mike Lynch, is one of the six missing passengers on the boat alongside her dad.

Her former school, Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith, west London, has just released a statement.

It said: ‘We are all incredibly shocked by the news that Hannah and her father are among those missing in this tragic incident and our thoughts are with their family and everyone involved as we await further updates.’

Divers carry out searches in 10 minute segments

Emergency rescuers have just 10 minutes to search for those missing in the wreckage of the Bayesian, responders have told Giornale Di Sicilia.

The divers have faced challenges when searching for those onboard, with Marco Tilotta, who is coordinating the search and rescue, describing it as a ‘prohibitive’ search.

Emergency responder Luca Cari told Italian daily Giornale Di Sicilia: ‘They can stay underwater for a maximum of 12 minutes, two of which are needed to go up and down.

‘So the real time to be able to carry out the search is 10 minutes per dive.’

Law firm Clifford Chance ‘deeply saddened’ by sinking

A spokesperson for law firm Clifford Chance said it is ‘deeply saddened’ by the sinking of superyacht Bayesian off he coast of Sicily.

A spokesperson said: ‘We are in shock and deeply saddened by this tragic incident.

‘Our thoughts are with our partner, Christopher Morvillo, and his wife, Neda, who are among the missing.

‘Our utmost priority is providing support to the family as well as our colleague Ayla Ronald, who together with her partner thankfully survived the incident.

‘Our thoughts extend to the other passengers and crew and all those affected.

‘We have no further comment at this time.

‘We, and the families, ask that their request for privacy is honoured during this period.’

Mike Lynch and five other passengers may be inside sunken yacht

The Italian Coastguard believes Mike Lynch and five other missing people may still be inside the sunken yacht, a spokesman said.

Vincenzo Zagarola told the PA news agency this was the working theory of officials on Sicily because it is believed the boat sank quickly and search and rescue efforts by sea and air have so far delivered no results.

He said: ‘We think they are still inside the boat, that is our very hard idea.

‘Our search and rescue activity by sea and air has gone on for around 36 hours.

‘Of course, we do not exclude that they are not inside the boat, but we know the boat sank quickly.

‘We suppose that the six people missing may not have had time to get out of the boat.’

Bayesian ‘practically intact’ on seabed, diver says

One dead, six missing after sailboat sinks off Palermo

The yacht which sank off the coast of Palermo yesterday morning remains largely undamaged at the bottom of the Mediterranean, a diver has said.

Speaking to Italian newspaper Il Messaggero , Marco Tilotta said the Bayesian was ‘practically intact’.

Mr Tilotta, who works for Palermo’s fire and rescue service, said: ‘It is resting on its side on the starboard side. It has no gashes, no signs of impact.’

Charlotte Golunski and her family pictured leaving hospital

Charlotte Golunski, who was one of the first Bayesian passengers to speak out after the sinking, has left hospital in Palermo.

She gave a memorable account of the terror she felt on Monday morning as a storm hit the boat in an interview with Italian newspaper La Repubblica.

Ms Golunski said: ‘It was all dark. In the water I couldn’t keep my eyes open. I screamed for help but all I could hear around me was the screams of others.’

She saved the life of her one-year-old daughter Sophia by holding her above the waves, and the pair ended up at Di Cristina paediatric hospital in Palermo together.

Her husband James Emslie also survived the sinking and was taken to a different hospital in the Sicilian city.

The family of three was pictured leaving Di Cristina hospital together.

Divers manage to crack open way into the Bayesian

A life boat is docked in Porticello near Palermo, on August 20, 2024 a day after the British-flagged luxury yacht Bayesian sank. Diving teams have managed to make a way to get inside the Bayesian, which has sunk some 50 metres.

Giornale De Sicilia , a Sicilian newspaper, says diverts from the fire department and port authority have opened a hole in the hull.

The rescue teams also now have a clearer idea of the condition of the Bayesian – including that the hull is still intact.

The yacht, La Repubblica reports, shows no sign of colliding with rocks or other ships. It has tilted 90° to the right and has sunk 50 metres.

The working theory is that the ship was flooded with water from the stern or bow in a short amount of time. Furniture and debris have swamped the cabins.

Divers are working in 35-minute ships, taking 12 minutes to go back up to the surface.

Missing Judy Bloomer ‘brilliant champion for women’s health’

Judy, the wife of Jonathan Bloomer, is among the six yacht passengers missing.

She’s been described by the CEO of Eve Appeal, a gynaecological cancer charity she was a trustee of, as a ‘brilliant champion for women’s health’.

Athena Lamniso was ‘deeply shocked to hear the news that our very dear friend and her husband Jonathan, are among those missing’, the BBC reported.

‘Our thoughts are with Judy and Jonathan’s family, as well as all those who are still waiting for news after this tragic event,’ she added.

Search continues for British tech magnate Mike Lynch and 5 others after luxury superyacht sinks off Sicily

Mike Lynch at federal court in San Francisco, Calif., on March 18.

PORTICELLO, Sicily — British tech magnate Mike Lynch and five other people were missing after their luxury superyacht sank during a freak storm off Sicily early Monday, Italy’s civil protection and authorities said. Lynch’s wife and 14 other people survived.

Lynch, who was acquitted in June in a big US fraud trial, was among six people who remain unaccounted for after their chartered sailboat sank off Porticello, near Palermo, sometime after 4 a.m. A tornado over the water known as a waterspout had struck the area overnight, said Salvo Cocina of Sicily’s civil protection agency.

One body was recovered, and police divers spent the day trying to reach the hull of the ship, which was resting at a depth of 50 meters (163 feet) off Porticello where it had been anchored, rescue authorities said. They returned to the site after 10 p.m. to see if it would be possible to search through the night, when weather conditions were expected to worsen, said Luca Cari, spokesman of the fire rescue service.

The ship had a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers, the Italian coast guard said. A sudden fierce storm had battered the area overnight, and a waterspout struck precisely where the 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian had been moored.

“They were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Cocina, noting that another big ship nearby, the Sir Robert Baden Powell, wasn’t as badly damaged and helped rescue the 15 survivors — including Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares.

Emergency services at the scene of the search for a missing boat, in Porticello Santa Flavia, Italy, on Aug. 19. British tech giant Mike Lynch, his lawyer, and four other people are among those missing after their luxury superyacht sank during a freak storm off Sicily, Italy’s civil protection and authorities said. Lynch’s wife and 14 other people survived.

The Bayesian was notable for its single 75-meter (246-feet) mast — one of the world’s tallest made of aluminum and which was lit up at night, just hours before it sank. Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week.

One of the survivors, identified as Charlotte Golunski, said she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, Italian news agency ANSA reported. The father, identified by ANSA as James Emslie, also survived, said Cocina.

Karsten Borner, the captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, said he had noticed the Bayesian nearby during the storm but after it calmed he saw a red flare and realized the ship had simply disappeared, ANSA and the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported. Borner said he and a crew member boarded their tender and found a lifeboat with 15 people, some of them injured, who they then took aboard and alerted the coast guard.

Eight of those rescued were hospitalized while the others were taken to a hotel. One body believed to be the cook was found near the wreck, but six others were unaccounted for and believed inside the hull, said Cari, the fire rescue spokesperson. The rescue operations, which were visible from shore, involved helicopters and rescue boats from the coast guard, fire rescue and civil protection service.

Emergency services at the scene of the search for a missing boat, in Porticello Santa Flavia, Italy, on Aug. 19.

Fisherman Fabio Cefalù said he had seen a flare from shore at around 4:30 a.m. and immediately set out to the site but by the time he got there, the Bayesian had already sunk, with only cushions, wood and other items from the superyacht floating in the water.

“But for the rest, we didn’t find anyone,” he said from the port hours later. He said that he immediately alerted the coast guard and stayed on-site for three hours, but didn’t find any survivors. “I think they are inside, all the missing people.”

He said he had been up early to check the weather to see if he could go fishing, and surmised that a sudden waterspout had struck the yacht.

“It could be that the mast broke, or the anchor at the prow pulled it, I don’t know,” he said.

Cocina said the crew and passengers hailed from a variety of countries: In addition to Britain and the United States, passengers and crew were from Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain, he said.

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Italy to conduct a preliminary assessment. The Foreign Commonwealth and Development office said it was “providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families.”

Dutch foreign ministry spokesperson Casper Soetekouw said the lone Dutch citizen on board, a man, had been rescued and was not in life-threatening condition.

Lynch, once hailed as Britain’s king of technology, was cleared in June of fraud and conspiracy charges related to Hewlett Packard’s $11 billion takeover of his company, Autonomy Corp.

The not guilty verdicts followed an 11-week criminal trial in San Francisco that delved into the history of HP’s 2011 acquisition of Autonomy, a business software firm founded by Lynch.

The fraud accusations represented a dramatic turn in the fortunes of an entrepreneur once described as the Bill Gates of Britain — a title he seemed to live up to when he netted an $800 million from the Autonomy sale.

The acquittal vindicated Lynch, who had vehemently denied wrong doing and portrayed HP as a technological train wreck.

“I’m looking forward to returning the UK and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field,” Lynch said in a statement released after the verdict.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, can accommodate 12 passengers in four double cabins, a triple and the master suite, plus crew accommodations, according to Charter World and Yacht Charters.

The vessel, which previously was named Salute when it flew under a Dutch flag, featured a sleek, minimalist interior of light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions and photos on the charter sites.

Winfield reported from Rome. AP writers Danica Kirka and Sylvia Hui contributed from London.

This story has been corrected to reflect that the fisherman’s name is Fabio Cefalù, not Francesco Cefalu’.
