Where to Charter in January : British Virgin Islands

January is one of the best times to sail the British Virgin Island (BVI) complex, it’s quieter and cheaper, the weather is perfect, with waters warm enough to swim comfortably, avoiding the often sweltering weather of high summer. The BVI attracts mainly tourists from the USA, who prefer the summer months. Moreover, the hurricane season, which can be tricky for sailors, ends in November. The British Virgin Islands (BVI) is an archipelago in the Caribbean, part of the British Overseas Territories, consisting of more than 60 islands, the largest of which is Tortola, where the state’s capital, Road Town, lies. It is considered one of the world’s best charter sailing destinations, as most of the islands are uninhabited and accessible by sea only. The climate is tropical rainforest all year round, with beaches of white sand and abundant greenery.

BVI – Best Yacht Charter Guide

Below are our best-recommended yacht charter itineraries, guides and web resources for your luxury yachts charter vacation in BVI.

Here’s a sample 7-day itinerary of your trip to the BVI on a chartered boat. From Tortola to Virgin Gorda, Anegada and beyond. Foxy’s, Soggy Dollar Bar, The Willy T, and all the great BVI places are included in this itinerary. Have a view and enjoy!

Colors, wildlife, 340 days of sunshine per annum, music, dance, the high life, or the secluded coves, they are there all year round but February is perhaps easiest due to trade winds being calmer and more infrequent.

Where to Charter in May : Greece

The main charter season in Greece is relatively long, spanning from April to September, with a peak in July and August. Tourism has not yet reached its peak in May, so this is perhaps the best time to visit some of the most well-known and frequented Greek islands, such as Mykonos and Santorini, ahead of the high summer crowds. Moreover, May is largely free from the trade winds that can make sailing demanding during July or August. Notice the interesting months of March and October, which offer a nice combination of “water warm enough to swim” and out-of-season prices for charter yachts.

Greece is a country with a rich history and vibrant culture. From ancient ruins and museums to traditional tavernas and folk dances, there’s always something new to discover. For a luxury yacht charter vacation, Greece has over 6,000 beautiful islands, and navigating them is an Odyssey of a lifetime.

Image:

At least one man was killed and six people were missing Monday after a luxury superyacht sank near the Sicilian capital of Palermo during a violent storm, Italian officials said.

The 184-ft sailboat with 22 people on board “suddenly sank” at around 5 a.m. local time (11 p.m. ET) “probably due to the terrible weather conditions,” the City Council of Bagheria said in a statement.

A strong storm and a tornado hit the area and the coast around an hour earlier, it added.

A baby, around a year old, was being treated at a children’s hospital, the statement said. It added that seven adults were taken to the emergency room but “it seems that none are in serious conditions.”

Another seven people were at the Port Authority in nearby Porticello, the statement said. Six were missing, the statement said. Volunteers from various organizations “are going there to help,” it added.

In a separate statement, Italy’s Fire Department said that “divers, a motorboat and a helicopter,” had been deployed to help with the search.

The wreck was at a depth of around 165-ft, the statement said.

Divers from the Sicilian city of Sassari and Naples, a city on the Italian mainland , were “arriving on site to search inside the sunken vessel,” it added.

Italy's coast guard named the yacht as the Bayesian, built by Italian shipbuilder Perini in 2008, according to The Associated Press, which reported that the luxury vessel has an aluminum hull and can carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. Online sites list it for charter for up to 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week, the AP reported.

The boat left the Sicilian port of Milazzo on Aug. 14 and was last tracked east of Palermo on Sunday evening, with a navigation status of “at anchor,” according to vessel tracking app Vesselfinder.

Fabio La Bianca, 40, took a picture of the boat at around 10 p.m. local time Sunday night shortly after he closed his bar in nearby Santa Flavia. “Absurd tragedy tonight. I am lost for words,” the 40-year-old said in a Facebook post Monday.

Greece Yacht Charter Guide

Go here for a list of Greece yacht charters in the Mediterranean . Eastern Mediterranean Greece yacht charter holiday offers charterers so much to explore around the various famous sunny Greek Islands, boasting remarkable ancient history, unique architecture and charming little waterfront villages tumbling down the island mountains. Greece yacht charter vacationers tend to revisit Greece year after year, as there are plenty of ancient ruins and ancient history to soak up. Anyone heard of Homer, Virgil, Ulysses, Socrates or Troy?

Greece Luxury Yacht Charter Hot Spots

As a Greece yacht charter covers so much territory. Let’s have a brief look at the main areas to charter your yacht. The first four are the main Greece charter areas: the Ionian Islands, the Aegean & Sporades, the Cyclades and last but not least the Dodecanese.

Each Ionian Island in Greece holds a different charisma and charm for sailing yacht charters vacations. The Islands that you can explore on your yacht charter include Eptanisa (The Seven Islands): Corfu, Kefalonia, Zakinthos, Lefkada, Ithaca, Paxi and Kythera. Some highlights include the busy touristy but beautiful Corfu as well as the Smugglers Cove. It can only be accessed by sea at Zakinthos and is one of the most famous and stunning beaches in Greece. The Blue Grotto is another spectacle of the ocean.

Greece’s Aegean Islands are less visited than the Cyclades, which makes them the perfect place for a less crowded yacht charter holiday, particularly if you’re interested in art, culture and history and also the fertile countryside is simply beautiful. Some of the islands include Samos, Lesvos and Samothraki. The Northern Sporades on the eastern side of Greece are also a very popular yacht charter area with some of the prettiest, thickly wooded, islands in the Mediterranean.

The Cyclades offer both culture and the offer of hedonistic pursuits. There are ancient sites, Byzantine castles, museums and lively nightlife, shopping, dining, and of course the famous beaches. Some hot spots in this area include Mykonos, Delos, Santorini, Sikinos, Paros and Naxos, and Serifos.

The Dodecanese is the most southerly group of islands in the Southern Sporades. The group includes the 14 larger islands of Lipsi, Patmos, Leros, Kalymnos, Kos, Astypalea, Nisyros, Symi, Tilos, Rhodes, Khalki, Karpathos and Kasos, together with some 40 smaller islets and rocks; plenty to see and explore on your yacht charter.

Corfu is by far the largest island of the Eptanisa ("Seven Islands") in the Ionian Sea, located on Greece's far western coast. It combines a populous east coast with plenty of beaches and a dramatic west coast where few tourists go to cliff-faced inlets and coastlines. Corfu is extremely busy in the 'high-season', best time to visit Corfu on your yacht charter is in May or June.

Athens, the capital of Greece, is a captivating destination to be visited on any Greece yacht charter itinerary, which boasts of important history spanning around 3,400 years. Athens yacht charter is a fantastic way to discover the numerous treasures of this city while enjoying the luxury and unparalleled comfort of your preferred Athens charter yacht. Over the years Athens was occupied by many conquerors who built the many impressive monuments gracing this fascinating city. For more information about Athens follow this link.

Cephalonia is the most mountainous of the Ionian Islands and a perfect place for hiking amidst breathtaking views. The tallest mountain, Mount Enose of 5,340 feet is covered with the Kefallonian fir trees. On your yacht charter in Cephalonia you could also visit the Gentilini winery or that of Calligas, or experience great nightlife at Assos, with its fantastic panoramic views.

Zakinthos' real fame today lies in the native nestling grounds of the endangered loggerhead turtle, however it has also caused clashes between the irate environmentalists and villagers bent on developing the turtles' beach-front nesting ground. The main beach at Laganas is to be avoided as one of the main turtle nesting grounds. However, visiting Zakinthos while chartering a yacht you could go and see the Byzantine Museum in town for examples of the Zakinthian school of icon painting. From here you could sail around to Volimes for a look at the beautiful Blue Grotto.

Visiting Ithaca or Ithaki on you charter yacht you will come across rich deep-blue bays and mountains of flowers and trees. This patriarchal home of Odysseus is filled with mythology of Odysseus from a castle named after him to a cave where he is said to have hidden the treasures of the Phaiakes.

Paros, located south of Mykonos, is another paradise for beautiful, fine-sand beaches. This charming little port is full of fishermen's houses and Athenian retreats. Like Mykonos, Paros is a centre of world famous windsurfing championships. Travel inland to the South for the Valley of the Butterflies which pulsates with thousands of fluttering wings in summer. For a quiet anchorage, stay at the sister island Antiparos, where there are many beaches, and an amazing cave called Spileon.

Approaching Santorini aboard your luxury yacht, you will be greeted by sheer, striated cliffs and white cubist villages perched at the summit. Enjoy a drink and a gorgeous Santorini sunset overlooking a seamless custard bay where the volcano lies dormant. Drop anchor on the easily accessible east coast for a swim at black volcanic-sand beaches and unbeatable deep-sea diving. Don't miss Santorini's superb archaeological sites, including Ancient Thira, a Doric city- fortress from the 9th century B.C. high on a southern coastal promontory, and farther south, fascinating on-going excavations at Akrotiri, which is an even earlier Minoan settlement.

Rhodes' main town Mandraki is full of shops, tourists and tourist paraphernalia. It is advisable to visit in early morning hours for its Medieval citadel built by the Knights of St. John, an order of Crusaders who ruled here for 213 years. In the old city, visit the memorable Byzantine Museum and the Mosque of Suleiman, subsequent conqueror of Rhodes. Inland, visit the lovely Valley of the Butterflies in summer, and Archangelos, the island's largest village, famous for soft leather goods and pottery.

Poros is well-known for its "loukoumades", deep-fried batter cakes served hot with ribbons of honey. But it's also known for charming small streets, a long, impressive quay and the verdant lemon tree forests on the mainland across the narrow channel that separates the two.

Hydra is a sea captains' island. It was mentioned in the writings of Herodotus as early as the 5th century B.C., but a relatively recent history as a boat-building center from the 17th century on made it an island of note. Since the 1960s, its winding, picturesque streets have attracted jet-setters and well-to-do international hippies. Take a walk up these charming streets, climbing far up to catch a glimpse of superbly renovated old Greek houses. Later, descend to the port for some of the best restaurants on any Greek island.

Spetses, a very small island, is likely the favourite site for affluent Athenians to build their modern weekend houses. But this island also has the distinguished good luck to be the birthplace of Bouboulina, fighting heroine of the 1822 War of Independence from the Ottoman Turks. Take a small trip from Dapia to the Bekiri cave on the west coast and to the south, sail past shipowner Stavros Niarchos' private islet Spetsopoula.

Kea is lovely, quiet and traditional. It is like going to the most remote islands in the Aegean. In the vilage of Ioulis you will come across a fantastic labyrinth of white Cycladic houses perched on the side of a mountain with a great main square.

Heading to Mykonos on you Greek yacht charter vacation you will encounter one of the most expensive Greek islands, with its countless resorts and its many, many good restaurants and bars. Mykonos is popular for the glamour of its nightlife which has been this barren island's chief attraction. Arriving here, anchor outside Mykonos Town's "Little Venice" with its row of waterfront cafes over-looking the water, and visit the Folklore Museum and the Archeological Museum at both ends of the quay. Shop by day or take in one of Mykonos' extravagant bars for a sunset drink.

A 'must' on any Cyclades Yacht Charter is the tiny, windswept Delos, also known as Apollo's birthplace. It was also the centre of the pan-Greek Delian League which the city-state of Athens grouped around itself for defence purposes. For 1000 years, the sacred island of Delos also hosted the Delian Festival, which until the 4th century B.C. was the greatest in Greece. During this period, Delos was a free port and nearly the entire Levant traded and probably banked here under the protection of shrines erected to their various deities and religions. The remains of this greatness are vast and impressive.

Greece also boasts magnificent natural beauty. The stunning aqua or dark blue waters and the faultless blue skies are a draw card for sailing yacht charter vacations as well as luxury motor yachts. Greece is still one of the most sought-after yacht charter areas in the Mediterranean, be it luxury crewed yacht charter or bare boat yacht charter, due to the huge number of things to see and do and the relative close proximity of everything by water.

Perhaps it’s the sexy sophistication of Mykonos, the music and dance of Zorba and the timeless romance of Santorini that attracts Greece’s shores. The Greek Islands are an intense blend of past the present, old and new. The Greeks are strong in their traditions and beliefs. Widows dressed in black can stare accusingly at the scantily dressed tourists, yet moments later, invite you in as welcomed guests. Bustling taverns and modern discos entertain the young and young at heart.

The Greek hospitality is unchallenged. A sailing yacht vacation or a power boat charter is a great way to experience all the Greek Islands have to offer. There is also increasing demand for luxury yacht charter and superyacht charter in Greece. After the sunset you can relax in your charter yacht’s cockpit sipping on Greek wine, Dolmadakia (stuffed vine leaves) and Tzatziki whilst listening to the soothing sounds of Bouzouki music drifting from a little harbour village.

Greece Luxury Yacht Charter Tips

With its many amazing beaches, beautiful clear waters and fantastic bars, it’s not surprising many visitors head for Greece every year. Here’s some advice if you’re planning a yacht charter vacation this summer.

1. Choose the right time to visit Greece

Greece’s holiday season is quite long starting in May and finishing in mid-October. If you visit before or after these months, there aren’t so many people around especially on the more popular islands. Mykonos for example doesn’t have many visitors in May so the nightlife isn’t as vibrant than in July or August. If, however you love relaxing in the sun and prefer a quieter vacation, avoid these two months.

2. Take the weather into consideration when planning your holiday

Always check the weather when you decide to take a yacht charter holiday in Greece. It’s usually warm in the early and late season although the sea temperature is a little cooler in early summer. December brings colder weather and cold waters so swimming is out unless you don’t mind being a bit on the chilly side. This month late in the year on the other hand is a good time if you wish to see the culture and history of Greece as it’s fairly quiet. Most yacht owners and charterers prefer to visit the Greek Islands between May and early October, so expect busier times when choosing to sail during these two months.

3. Pack a large suitcase

With around 2,000 Greek islands to choose from it’s a good idea to do a little research about the island or islands you intend visiting - see above. There are historical islands, islands that are sophisticated and islands that are totally uninhabited. You won’t need a huge suitcase of clothes if you’re going to an island that’s underpopulated and you just plan to swim, sunbathe or eat on board your superyacht. All you will need are shorts, T-Shirts and swimming costumes.

However, if you decide to visit islands such as Rhodes, Paros or Mykonos you may need a large suitcase. Dining out in smart restaurants, dancing the night away in clubs or wanting to be part of the jet set means you will probably want many changes of wardrobe. Pack luggage accordingly, taking casual along with elegant clothes to suit all occasions.

4. Throw away the guide book

A guide book isn’t really that necessary if you’re heading to the Aegean Sea on a superyacht charter. Islands in this region are close together and there’s plenty of information elsewhere. With so much info on so many places, it’s an impossible task to read it all so maybe a short summary is the best bet about each place you intend to visit.

Get a general idea of accessibility to certain islands, make sure you can moor in the dock and find out the size of the port. Do a little homework about the nightlife, attractions and the types of beaches to expect. You can then work out an itinerary of the island you prefer to spend time on and where to go, as well as what to see once you’re there.

How about reading some of the more notable books about Greece? The Story of Ulysses or Odysseus, the King of Itheca or Homer’s Odyssey make interesting subjects to get you into the swing of this beautiful country.

The Charter Season & Climate

Like most of the Mediterranean, the Greece yacht chartering season generally runs from April to the end of October. The summer season in July and August is the hottest and tends to have strong Meltemi winds blowing frequently. This is also the high season as far as numbers go. The best time to charter a yacht is probably either of the shoulder seasons (April-May and September-October), each side of the main summer season, as the temperatures are the most comfortable, the wind lighter (yet reliable) and the onshore tourists have yet to arrive or have just left in their largest numbers.

Greece Yacht Charter Enquiry

Dear Josh, I was just about to write you one word "WOW!!!"Thank you very very much! Your recommendation is now becoming a brand :-) I can now blindly trust your advice :-) I loved the boat. It is in excellent condition. It is rather big, but cozy. We had all the chances for interactive sailing and for the discreet leisure time. We hardly ever went anywhere out of the upper deck, because it was so lovely! The master bedroom was perfect. The idea with two bathrooms is great! I loved the crew. Everyone was welcoming, ready to help and in general they were very pleasant people! Especially the captain and his senior assistant Tasos. We felt as if we were hosted by the family of old friends. Despite the short trip, they shown us lovely places to swim, advised on the island hiking, entertained us with the tender/toys. Food. Majestic! It was the first try for the new chef on Gitana. And he exceeded any expectation! Quality, quantity, the table service ...were impeccable. Your wines arrangement worked very well too! Sailing. We had just two chances to open full sails. But it was great! Otherwise the motor was perfectly sufficient. The boat was remarkably stable while on the go. So, our last minute booking turned out to be a fantastic adventure! Thank you very much! I am glad that you were there to help with this difficult booking. Really appreciated! S/Y GITANA / Athens, Greece / Oct 2

Inside the Maldives’ first superyacht marina, the newest playground of the super rich

Y ou’d be forgiven for assuming the Maldives, a country that is 99 per cent water and a playground for the uber wealthy, comfortably caters for the yachting elite. The archipelago’s 172 luxury resorts, many of which are built on private islands, offer every conceivable amenity, from sublime underwater spas to incongruous snow rooms. Yet a purpose-built superyacht marina is a glaring omission from the list, an anomaly that Atoll Estates is looking to change.

The UAE-based company has revealed plans for a five-star development set within 500 hectares of a natural lagoon in the South Malé Atoll. Located just 21 miles from Malé International airport (which completes a large expansion in 2025 to cater for the estimated 4.3 million travellers passing through each year), Zamani Islands will comprise three individual resorts spread across eight islands. Designed in partnership with Dubai-based architects Killa Design, it promises to host the island chain’s first dedicated superyacht marina.

“By providing state-of-the-art facilities for superyachts , the marina will attract more high-net-worth individuals and yachting enthusiasts to the region,” says Amit Majumder, co-founder and managing partner of Atoll Estates, who believes the influx will boost local tourism. “The increased yachting traffic will foster the development of related services and infrastructure, further establishing the Maldives as a premier yachting destination on the global stage.”

The initial phase of the development, set to open in 2026, will include the first of three distinct resorts made up of a collection of private residences, each with a private pier for yacht tenders. Lifelong berthing at the marina (once complete) will also be included. The second “multi-experiential” resort is aimed at families and couples with a private island beach club for over 21s, while the third “lifestyle” resort will have a total of 300 keys, a yacht and sailing club and the largest events and entertainment venue in the country.

Spanning a whopping 60,000 square metres, Zamani Islands marina’s full-service facilities are pitched to include crew amenities, provisioning, maintenance and access to a yacht club. Of the 120 yacht berths, 60 will be dedicated to superyachts upwards of 30m in length, with a single dockside mooring of up to 200m. Other resort amenities include the first medical spa in the country (though Soneva’s two wellness complexes may have pipped them to the post), personal butler service, and 28 food and beverage venues, including an underwater restaurant.

It’s no secret that the Maldives’ wide-open waters, vibrant coral reefs and diving hot spots make it a yachting haven. Around 70 to 100 large motor and sailing yachts arrive in Maldivian waters each year (per 2021-2023 Maldivian Coast Guard cruising permit applications). The country’s strategic location in the Indian Ocean also makes it a convenient stopover for yachts travelling between the Middle East, southeast Asia, and the Indian subcontinent. According to tracking data compiled by Bloomberg, the Maldives saw more visiting yachts than Hong Kong and Singapore combined in 2023, slightly outpacing Thailand. So why has there not been a superyacht marina in the pipeline before now?

“For the past 20 years, the Maldives’ private resort tourism model has proven highly profitable and pretty low risk,” says Splinter Fangman, a yacht and berth broker at Edmiston. “With a superyacht marina, it’s still a gamble whether the yachts will actually use it.”

For vessels upwards of 70m that can sustain themselves at anchor for weeks at a time, the Maldives’ current lack of infrastructure isn’t an issue. Yachts like 134m Serene and 97m Faith are self-sufficient floating resorts equipped with their own high-end amenities, even the aforementioned snow room. Provisioning and fuel bunkering is done ship to ship using a large barge that caters for private island resorts. Though the opportunity to dock at a marina to use shore power, turn off systems and generators, and allow the crew to go ashore is appealing, it’s not a requisite, says Fangman, especially for owners who prize privacy above all else.

For smaller yachts that depend on the services of a marina, making the crossing to the Indian Ocean can be challenging. That said, the Maldives is well placed to capture substantial traffic in the burgeoning Asia-Pacific yachts, while vessels based in the Middle East regard it as an attractive alternative to the crowded anchorages of the Caribbean.

“A marina in the Maldives will pull through huge numbers of yachts from the Red Sea and Persian Gulf,” says Donovan Chong, an independent marina entrepreneur. He cites the 146m Lürssen-built Opera, owned by Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the deputy prime minister of the United Arab Emirates, which typically berths in Dubai, as a frequent visitor to the Maldivian archipelago.

Demand for a marina that caters to the super rich is now a strategic focus for the Maldives, adds Chong, who notes there are several additional imminent marina projects in the pipeline. “The Maldivian government has made it a top priority to explore new tourism verticals beyond hotels and resorts and to establish the Maldives as the ‘eastern terminus’ of the yachting world.”

He believes a dedicated marina will unlock the untapped potential of the Maldives as a charter (yacht rental) hot spot, and that future resorts need to be built around the marina, rather than treating it as an amenity. Majumder agrees. “Zamani Islands is more than just a residence; it is a lifestyle — one that seamlessly blends the opulence of land and sea, providing a haven for those who appreciate the finer things in life.” In other words, build it and the yachts will come.

Update: family of victim killed in Titan submersible disaster sues OceanGate for $50M

The family of French diver Paul-Henri Nargeolet, one of the passengers who died in the fatal Titan disaster, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit seeking more than $50,000,000 against American tourism and expeditions company OceanGate.

Accusing the submarine operator of gross negligence, the lawsuit claims the waiver and release "failed to disclose many key, relevant risk factors, [...] regarding the design and operation of Titan or the materials used in its construction." In particular, it mentioned the submarine's carbon fibre hull, which was reportedly "not properly tested for integrity".

The complaint goes on to suggest the distressing conditions the passengers on board may have experienced in their final moments: "The crew may well have heard the carbon fibre’s crackling noise grow more intense as the weight of the water pressed on Titan’s hull. The crew lost communications and perhaps power as well. By experts’ reckoning, they would have continued to descend, in full knowledge of the vessel’s irreversible failures, experiencing terror and mental anguish prior to the Titan ultimately imploding."

OceanGate has so far declined to comment on the lawsuit, which was filed last week in King County, Washington.

What happened during the Titan submersible disaster?

On 18 June 2023, the 6.7-metre submersible Titan imploded during a descent to the Titanic wreck at 3,800 metres below sea level. Operated by OceanGate, Titan had five passengers on board who subsequently all died from the sub's violent inwards collapse.

Pakistani investor Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman, British businessman Hamish Harding, French diver Paul-Henri Nargeolet and OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush were the victims aboard the deep-water vessel when the incident occurred.

Titan was expected to take around two and a half hours to reach the wreckage but soon lost contact with its mothership, Polar Prince, kickstarting a search operation for the missing submarine. The news grabbed the attention of media outlets across the globe and updates trickled out across the week, rocking the yachting and submersible industry.

The US Coast Guard convened a Marine Board of Investigation (MBI) into the loss of the Titan submersible and the investigation is ongoing. While many theories and studies have circulated as to the cause of the Titan submarine tragedy – including microscopic imperfections in the carbon fibre hull – no conclusion has been reached as of yet.

Earlier this year (2024), a purported transcript of communications between the sub and mothership that went viral last year was declared to be fake. “I’m confident it’s a false transcript,” said the chairman of the MBI, Captain Jason D. Neubauer. “It was made up.”

Titan disaster timeline:

Sunday 18 june 2023.

08:00: The Titan submersible was launched from its mothership, Polar Prince (previously CCGS Sir Humphrey Gilbert). 09:45: Contact between the mothership and the submersible was lost. The U.S. Navy also noticed “an anomaly consistent with an implosion or explosion”. 15:00: Titan was scheduled to resurface but did not. 17:40: The U.S. Coast Guard was notified.

Monday 19 June

The search for Titan began.

Tuesday 20 June

Speculation began surrounding sonar detecting “banging” noises in the search area. These are later determined to be natural ocean sounds.

Thursday 22 June

Debris and remains of the sub were found around 500 metres from the bow of the Titanic. Citing this, the Coast Guard announced that the submersible had suffered a “catastrophic implosion.”

Sunday 25 June

The Coast Guard arranged a Marine Board of Investigation (MBI) to determine what happened to the Titan.

Wednesday 28 June

Wreckage of the Titan was brought to St. John's, a city on Newfoundland island off Canada's Atlantic coast.

Sunday July 2

OceanGate announced it is ceasing operations.

Has there been an inquiry?

An investigation into the incident was launched by the US Coast Guard in June last year, which convened a Marine Board of Investigation (MBI) into the loss of the Titan submersible. The MBI examined "whether there is need for new laws or regulations, or amendment or repeal of existing laws or regulations, to prevent the recurrence of the casualty".

The Coast Guard received debris and evidence recovered from the seafloor at the site of the Titan submersible (28 June 2023). Later in the year, marine safety engineers with the MBI launched a follow-up salvage mission which recovered additional presumed human remains that were carefully recovered from within Titan’s debris. The evidence was transported for analysis by US medical professionals (4 October 2023).

A couple of months on, the US Coast Guard, National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) and the French Marine Casualty Investigation Authority (BEAmer) conducted an evidence review of recovered Titan submersible debris in Newport, Rhode Island (8 November 2023).

Jason Neubauer, Coast Guard chair for the Titan Marine Board of Investigation (MBI), said:  "This effort underscores the importance of international and interagency coordination in marine casualty investigations. Our partnerships with NTSB, TSB and the French Marine Casualty Investigation Authority enabled a thorough examination of the international incident, promoting safety and transparency."

A public hearing that will address the tragedy is scheduled to take place in September 2024. Until then, the MBI will continue its evidence analysis and witness interviews as part of the ongoing investigation.

Did Titan have warnings from experts?

Speaking on a special episode of the Big BOAT Interview alongside Rob McCallum, co-founder of EYOS Expeditions , Triton Submarines' co-founder Patrick Lahey shared his first public comments on the Titan submarine disaster. He said the disaster was an "experimental monstrosity that should never have carried people".

Lahey recalls pleading with his long-time friend and Titanic expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet, who was killed in the incident, not to dive with OceanGate. "I tried to do everything I could to discourage him from going out there. I know many people that knew him did the same thing."

McCallum also discusses his now well-publicised email exchange with OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, who also died on the dive, warning him that he was courting disaster by taking the uncertified Titan submersible to such extreme depths.

"He was completely dismissive," McCallum says. "The minute I found out it was going to be an unclassed vehicle, that's when the alarm bells rang. But perhaps the biggest red flag of all was when a senior member of the OceanGate team wrote a report laying out the 26 or 27 things wrong with the sub and suggested solutions to those problems and he was silenced."

McCallum also relates the final time he met Rush, at a dinner, when, "I told him in no uncertain terms that he was doing the wrong thing".

Lahey also met Rush, and toured the OceanGate submersible while it was being tested in the Bahamas. "There were glaring defects. I made this list of things for them to address. But when I looked at it, I thought I didn't have to worry too much as there was no way it was ever going to see the light of day."

Both Lahey and McCallum underline the point that to prevent similar incidents, all submersibles should be subject to third-party certification.

"It's essential," says Lahey. "If people insist on [accreditation] you can be assured that the craft that you're getting in has been reviewed independently by a group of professionals and according to a set of rules, it will be safe. If you look at the track record of certified craft, it is without peer – 50-plus years of absolute safety."
