Atlanta’s Lil Yachty is a pure creation of the Internet. His cult hit "1 Night" found most of its audience through a viral sketch comedy video , and before that, he was being plugged on Twitter  by Ian Connor, a stylist and web curator known mostly for his connection to  A$AP Rocky . He’s indebted to Lil B , too, with free-form verses that mimic Based Freestyles and a carefree energy reminiscent of the Based God’s Myspace days. In short, Yachty thrives in Rocky’s post-regionalist rap universe, a space defined by digital platforms rather than geography. One of his producers goes by Digital Nas. He is definitive proof that modern rap has no gatekeepers, and Soundcloud rap’s laziest possible copy-and-paste job.

There isn’t a single thing Lil Yachty’s doing that someone else isn't doing better, and in richer details. On  Lil Boat , his debut mixtape, he makes a grating mess of these varying influences. The most obvious creative inspiration is iLoveMakonnen , which becomes especially clear on "Good Day," with its creaky falsetto and warbling melody. But Makonnen brings warmth and a feeling of ease to his tracks, while Yachty is constantly straining, as if just getting the words out of his mouth is a struggle. His rapping is jerky and his voice is so flat that Auto-Tune itself seems to buckle under the weight.

Yachty’s main selling point is "fun." This is all supposed to seem easy and unbothered, and it does on cheery tunes like “Wanna Be Us” and “Run/Running.” But everything feels unfinished or undercooked—a handful of songs are just a single verse and a hook, with no clear relationship between the two. So a song like "Not My Bro" opens with a bang and then shrinks back into nothing, a series of pitchy, singsongy whines. It's a lot of things —irritating, boring —but "fun" isn't one of them.

Yachty’s simplicity works in his favor when it comes to catchy hooks. On the better songs here, he sings/raps over bubbly, retro N64-sounding productions (mostly produced by Burberry Perry) that convey childlike wonder and amusement. But the hooks don’t do nearly enough to balance out Yachty’s painful shrieks, and many of his ideas aren’t just basic, they’re sloppily executed. Attempting to form a working model out of the flotsam of the moment is a fool’s errand. But what else is to be expected of a prisoner of shifting tides?

you need to stay up out them streets if you can't take the heat
As with many pop artists, Lil Yachty is greatly concerned with maintaining his image--which is as fleshed-out as his music. Lil Yachty's reaction to the fury of Joe Budden, who interviewed him for Complex, perfectly encapsulates this. As a response to Yachty's disregard for Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac (both of whom were killed before Yachty was born), Budden's tirade rebuked Yachty for ignoring the "roots" of the genre. Yachty flashed his signature goofy smile and told him to chill, with a little laugh. While it's true that Yachty and many of his contemporaries don't care about the artists typically heralded as rap royalty, they don't have to. Although hip-hop "conservatives" like Budden may wince at the success of the red-haired teenager and others, he has carved a niche in the pop/trap scene, and nowhere is his positivity and songwriting as infectious as on his debut mixtape.

While Lil Yachty's trademark sound is nothing wholly original--he owes, as he has stated himself, elements of his sound to artists like Soulja Boy and Lil B--his bubbly, optimistic persona sets him apart from other artists in the trap music scene today. Accompanying him are upbeat melodies, glossy synths, and often childlike melodies. The self-proclaimed "King of the Teens" eschews many of hip-hop's most ubiquitous traditions, and not only because of his indifference towards critics' favorite rappers. By doing so, Lil Yachty successfully appeals to a younger fanbase who are not as interested in seeking out the music of yesteryear. For the same reason, however, critics like Joe Budden see Yachty as the downfall of the genre. The idea that Yachty for some reason has to idolize hip-hop's forefathers is a vacuous one, and an example of the age-old adage that older generations will reject the cultural and artistic expressions of the younger ones.

It's easy to see why Lil Yachty has been catapulted into fame by : throughout its runtime, his charming character serves as an excellent vehicle for his exuberant Autotune-drenched songs. Yachty is best at his most playful, since that is what differentiates him most from artists like Lil Uzi Vert and Kodak Black. The intro to the album, starting with a "Finding Nemo" sample, exhibits his two personalities, Lil Yachty and Lil Boat. While it's maybe not the most thought-provoking duality, it does allow him to show off his rapping on the first half, and his heavily embellished vocals in the second half. The intro serves as an apt introduction to Lil Yachty--it is childish, somewhat ridiculous, and almost laughable at times--but if the listener decides to accept all of this as part of Yachty's allure, it's fun as hell.

And fun is what Lil Yachty thrives on. "Minnesota," perhaps the best individual cut on the mixtape, is even more absurd than the opening track, with its incredibly simple piano melody backed by throbbing bass, and a fuck ng hook to boot. The features are almost overkill since Yachty is the best-equipped artist for the beat, but the contrast between the "posse cut" aspect and the preposterous instrumental makes it all the more entertaining. It shows Lil Yachty doing what Lil Yachty does best--enjoying himself, singing in a dopey voice, laying down bars about eating pork and rinds with a bitch from New York Times. Of course, traditionally "good" lyricism is nowhere to be found on the mixtape, but most of the time his voice is simply used as another instrument to add another melody and another dimension. The criterion of lyricism is relatively obsolete in mainstream pop and trap music criticism since artists like Lil Yachty rarely exert themselves lyrically. This is yet another example of hip-hop straying from its progenitors, who valued lyricism greatly as a key component to their music. Much to the ire of hip-hop conservatives, lyricism is no longer valued like this to mainstream music listeners, and Lil Yachty's popularity shows this.

While "Minnesota" shows Yachty at his weirdest, there are a number of more low-key tracks, which often don't suit him as well. "I'm Sorry," for example, is Yachty's take at an introspective, emotional song, but it doesn't feel right. The sorrowful lyrics is a poor fit for Yachty's personality, not to mention the lazy vocal melody. The best "love song" is his hit song "One Night." It's cheesy as hell, but excellent for the same reasons as Minnesota--just a little toned down and more commercially viable. Lil Yachty's producer and close friend TheGoodPerry does an excellent job on the beat, exactly the sort of instrumental Yachty can use best--fun, a little wacky, but ultimately very memorable.

With his Sprite commercial with LeBron James, his collaboration with Carly Rae Jepsen for Target, and a new debut album featuring a hit single with Migos, it seems that Lil Yachty is here to stay. His musical style, dictated by his persona, is somewhat limiting and can only carry him so far. However, Lil Yachty will ride specific sound for as far as it will take him, and he should. Lil Yachty's brand is fascinating, and the way in which it manifests itself in his music is often very charming. There are, of course, a few hiccoughs--songs like "Good Day" and "We Did It" are a little overbearing--but is a joyous statement from a very young artist. He'll keep on being Lil Yachty, no matter what you think of him.

"I disagree that lyrics aren't important to the album, as rappers who use goofy lyrics use them as a tool for furthering the fun feel of the album."

in some instances perhaps, but i think overall the lyrics don't contribute so much to the vibe of the album and instead fall under the category of stuff like:

"What's poppin'? It's Lil Yachty, I'm in the party

I need three thotties to come suck on my posse"

"?"

yeah i pretty much feel the same way about verm's anger lol

so much friction over lyrics in this type of music

lyrics are only as important as you want them to be. they don't have any intrinsic value or role to play. if you are assessing trap based on how eloquent and lofty the wordsmithery is, then you are confused.

Lil Boat is back.

After taking the internet by storm with “Poland,” Lil Yachty keeps the momentum going with his first album in nearly three years, Let’s Start Here .

The trippy 14-track set is a departure from his rap-heavy projects of the past, with appearances from Daniel Caesar, Justine Skye, Fousheé, and Diana Gordon.

Surprisingly, “Poland” is not included on the tracklist. The viral sensation reached No. 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 in October and received co-signs from Drake and Wiz Khalifa.

“My new album is a non-rap album,” Yachty told Ice Box last year. “It’s alternative, it’s sick… It’s like a psychedelic, alternative project. It’s different. It’s all live instrumentation.”

Let’s Start Here marks the beginning of a new era for the 25-year-old MC. “I’ve changed my dynamic. This album and on, I’m creating music a whole lot differently.”

Yachty’s last album, Lil Boat 3 , debuted at No. 14 in May 2020 and spawned the single “Oprah’s Bank Account” with Drake and DaBaby.

Lil Yachty's Label Concrete Boyz set to release their first collaboration project 'It's Us Volume 1' this April

A ccording to NFR Podcast, Lil Yachty's record label, Concrete Boys (also known as Concrete Boyz), is set to release their first collaboration project titled It's Us: Volume 1 on all streaming platforms this April.

NFR's official X account posted on March 25, confirming the release date of the Concrete Boyz project as April 5, 2024. The post also revealed the featured artists, including Lil Yachty, Karrahbooo, Draft Day, DC2Trill, and Camo. The tweet read:

"LIL YACHTY, KARRAHBOOO, DRAFT DAY, DC2TRILL, CAMO!"

The tracklist for the upcoming album is yet to be confirmed, but based on the artists involved in this project, it's likely to showcase a fusion of alternative rock, R&B, and rap.

Lil Yachty and Concrete Boys Discography

Yachty (Lil Boat), who is currently signed to Quality Control, incorporated his own Record Label Concrete Boyz, a few years ago in an attempt to bring upcoming artists in his genre to the spotlight.

Over the years, Yachty and his team have been slowly recruiting rappers and artists from across the music industry, from 31 Camo to Karahbooo, all of whose music appears to have been inspired by Boat's discography.

Lil Yachty has also collaborated with his signees on some of his previous work. Below are two songs officially released alongside Artist Draft Day:

  • Demon Time (Feat. Draft Day)
  • POPOVICH Freestyle (Feat. Draft Day)

On May 29, 2020, Yachty released his fourth studio album, titled Lil Boat 3 , across all DSPs (Digital Streaming Platforms) via Quality Control Music and Motown Records. The 19-track project included a track titled Concrete Boys .

This track acted as the official introduction to the "Concrete Crew" he was building with his record label. The song includes a shout-out to the Concrete Boys in the chorus when Yachty implies that when his "back is against the wall," he can always rely on his crew to come through for him.

Another notable bar from Lil Yachty's song has been listed below:

"I just woke up, dreamin' 'bout the rose (Oh my God) / They had ni**as 'round me who don't stand on toes (Hell nah) / Barely ever do I think about my foes / How much longer will I live? Only God knows."

On December 16, 2023, a song titled Mo Jams was released on the official YouTube channel for Concrete Boys, alongside a music video that featured most of the CB roster, except for 31 Camo. Mo Jams was produced by Rawbone and acts as the first official collaboration between the members of Concrete Boys.

This track, although not being released on DSPs, has garnered significant attention for an upcoming collaboration project by racking up almost 4 million views on YouTube.

As fans await a Concrete Boys collaboration album, Lil Yachty continues to impress fans by following up on his widely acclaimed 2023 project Let's Start Here, which found the rapper delving into a more experimental sound with his music.

Notably, Yachty has been releasing a string of singles, which include his collaboration with Fred Again.. on stayinit. The rapper was also featured on Lyrical Lemonade's debut studio album, All Is Yellow , which dropped two months ago in January 2024.

Maybe We Know a Little Too Much About Lil Yachty

Last year, I spoke with Lil Yachty about mystique. Our conversation about his Let’s Start Here album got awkward when he told me he didn’t want to reveal too much about its creation. I asked him about plans to release a documentary he recorded about the project, and he told me, “I doubt I’ll drop it. Just like me not wanting to do any of these interviews. I don’t really care to talk about it, [because] you give it all away [when] you pull the curtain back.”

When I asked him if he put a premium on artists with an allure of mystery when he was younger, he told me, “Coming up, you didn’t have all this social media. Even if [they] did an interview, you didn’t get every element of something. It’s the simple things you knew, but they left a lot of room for ‘Wow, how did he make this?’… Which is the beauty in art.”

Cash Cobain Strikes While His Sound Is Red Hot on 'Play Cash Cobain'

I came away from the interview feeling like Yachty was poised to transition into an enigmatic artist who would drop any kind of album without rhyme, reason, or explanation. We might even start calling him that ever-present buzzword: “reclusive.” He had the taste, peer respect, and industry connections to simply drop his music and go.

“I think Chapter One of my career is extremely oversaturated,” he told me. “I was thinking … I’m easily accessible. I’m on TikTok. I’m on YouTube. I’m on Twitter. I’m just everywhere. I didn’t like that.” But 18 months after our conversation, it feels like Yachty’s would-be triumphant next chapter is being marred by the same overexposure.

Instead of rap fans raving about his improbable career arc from a polarizing face of “mumble rap” to an accomplished ghostwriter who can explore almost any sound, people are riffing off jokes like “Don’t let that nigga Lil Yachty give you a McChicken, that nigga gon tell errbody.” This latest round of polarizing press, after breaking with his former Concrete Boys artist Karrahbooo, came after he went on live and pledged to fall back from social media. While part of him vies to lurk in the shadows like his friend Drake, solely communicating through ambiguous Instagram stories, maybe an internet baby just doesn’t know how to be mysterious.

Yachty’s rap career is defined by a collage of viral moments. His first single, 2015’s “One Night,” went viral on SoundCloud. He came into public consciousness during the 2016 live stream of Yeezy Season 3. His “Minnesota” hit was the score to the hip-hop generational war being waged on rap Twitter, with his ignorance of Biggie and 2Pac’s catalog not helping things. And his Everyday Struggle admission that he didn’t know the full details of his QC contract made him fodder for anyone seeking to soapbox about naive rappers signing bad deals. Yachty saw all of the criticism, and he pushed back, arguably losing the musical charm that made him a distinct artist by trying to prove he could rap. He told me, that during that period, “I was trying to be the spokesman for the new generation because no one else wanted to talk. I felt, ‘I’m going to stand up. I’m going to speak.’”

Later in the conversation, he told me, “If I’m not doing anything, I’m just usually browsing the internet, deep diving.” It makes sense that he scoured the rap internet and made inroads with Detroit cult heroes, collaborating with them on 2021’s Michigan Boy Boat . His online savvy is also why we see him co-signing up-and-coming acts like Dave Blunts, U.K. drill act Nemzzz, and, to much dismay, Ian.

Let’s Start Here feels like the work of a terminally online artist pursuing the cutting edge. His yodel-esque vocals roam free over the psychedelic rock palette crafted by musicians such as Alex G ,  Mac DeMarco , SADPONY, and Patrick Wimberly. It’s the kind of sonic excursion any rapper would flex about making, especially when they were counted out like Yachty had been in the early 2020s. He followed the album with several standout rap tracks including “The Secret Recipe” with J. Cole, which made our 2023 Best Rap Songs list. Even Kendrick rapping, “Yachty can’t give you no swag either,” in his “Euphoria” Drake diss lent him credibility; who in 2016, would have predicted Yachty being seen as the biggest rapper in the world’s not-so-secret weapon? He had become rap’s latest, greatest comeback story.

But it never stays strictly about the music with Yachty. During a Let’s Start Here listening event, he told the crowd he “wanted to be taken seriously as an artist and not just a SoundCloud rapper, not just a mumble rapper, not just a guy that made one hit.” Some people felt his comments implied that being “just” a rapper was inferior, but he told me that was “absolutely not” what he was trying to say. Regardless of his clarification, the perception of elitism stuck, and was intensified when he surmised that “hip-hop is in a terrible place” during our November 2023 Musicians on Musicians l ive event .

The hits have continued throughout 2024: He suggested that rappers were turning on Drake “’cause he’s the guy. It’s also probably that he fucked everyone’s bitch,” which feels like a childishly reductive stance given Kendrick’s (and others’) criticism of Drake’s culture-vulture-ish ways. In August, he talked to Andrew Schulz about leaking a bootleg of “Super Soaker,” a song that sampled online creator Mr. Hot Spot, who didn’t want to clear the song because of his recent religious conversion. Yachty’s decision to bring up the discrepancy on a podcast caused his fanbase, and Drake’s, to harass Mr. Hot Spot on social media, which felt like an inconsiderate power play. And that moment came shortly after he got the Big Apple hot when he said Bronx residents “cannot dress” while dressed like someone living uptown in 2008.

In a vacuum, any one of his comments is harmless enough to shrug off. But one after the other, they collectively paint a portrait of an artist who’s not as respectful, or tapped in, to culture as he posits. Shortly after the New York fashion comments, Yachty took to Instagram Live to clarify that he loves New York and declare, “I’m getting the fuck off that — I’m not doing no more talking. I don’t get shit else to say. I’m gone off this internet shit, I think I’m gone for the rest of the year. I swear to god.” Maybe he temporarily forgot he had a podcast. Just a week later, a clip from his A Safe Space pod went viral where he told his co-host Mitch that he was lucky to know him in a condescending tone. And days later, he crashed all the way out after a tweet where a fan divulged that Karrahbooo told her that Yachty bullied her.

During an emotionally charged Instagram Live session, he claimed that he wrote all of Karrahbooo’s music and threw the remaining Concrete Boys under the bus by claiming he dressed all of them. He and Karrahbooo have since been taking to their stories to clap back at each other, making a bad situation worse. Yachty’s currently being lambasted as the kind of person who can’t wait to tell the world what they did for you — you never wanna be that guy.

Perhaps people are letting the jokes fly for the moment, and Yachty dropping the right song will shift all the attention away from his mic miscues. Maybe Yachty doesn’t care what the public thinks. But it’s interesting to watch someone who’s repeatedly referenced not wanting to be accessible, and wishing he hadn’t opened his mouth, seemingly be unable to help himself from speaking out — in frequently self-sabotaging ways. It feels like the same digital soil that fertilized Yachty’s career is also his quicksand.

Lil Yachty Crashes Out On Karrahbooo & Mitch In Explosive IG Live Rant: Unpacking The Beef

Lil Yachty Visits Somewhere Nowhere NYC

Lil Yachty ’s Concrete Boys crew might not be as solid as he thought. That's especially the case after the rapper hopped on Instagram Live on Thursday night to air out his associates and signees. Despite pledging to stay off the internet for the remainder of the year, Yachty is still keeping tabs on social media narratives, whether or not they are true.

In the late hours of Thursday night, Lil Yachty went on a full-blown rant on Instagram Live where he aired out Karrahbooo for alleged comments she made about her split from Concrete Boys to a Red Lobster employee. Sounds crazy, right? Unfortunately, it didn’t end there as Yachty shifted his fury toward his best friend and A Safe Space co-host Mitch for not defending him against a random Twitter user claiming that the Atlanta rapper is a bad friend. A lot unravelled over a few hours so here’s everything you need to know about the beef so far.

Karrahbooo’s Departure From Concrete Boys

Before we delve into last night’s shenanigans, it’s important to highlight the beginning of this issue. In late July, fans speculated that Karrahbooo left the crew after fans found that she unfollowed her labelmates. Though it was initially rumors, the “Poland” star confirmed that she was, in fact, not a part of the collective anymore. “I'ma say this sh*t one time," Yachty said on Instagram Live. "We have split ways with Karrah as far as this Concrete sh*t. I have nothing to say. Nothing bad to say, nothing negative to say about Karrah. I wish her the best in her career. That's that. ... I don't have anything really bad to say or anything good to say. We just split, you know?”

Friction On The Timeline

It turns out that Yachty had plenty of negative things to say that were weighing on his chest. He just needed something minor to trigger the emotions that had been bottled up. The issues with Karrahbooo seemingly took a turn for the worse after an alleged Red Lobster employee claimed that Karrah pulled up to the restaurant when she was asked about leaving Concrete.

“Bro she walked in my job (red lobster) to order biscuits and I asked her why she left and she immediately corrected me and said I didn’t leave they kicked me out,” user @C_Staxxz wrote . “Saying they were really mean to her and bullying her a lot.” The user then added her own speculation to the mix, writing, “She seemed really hurt behind ts tbh like they really did her dirty and i believe its because her name was the biggest behind yachty if we being real I only started listening to him again because of her. They’re haters and i told her she’ll do just fine without them. F*ck em.” She also added a photo with Karrahbooo to corroborate that the rapper did pull up to Red Lobster.

Mind you, Karrahbooo herself didn’t mention anything on the Internet, and much of the tweet was primarily speculation. Plus, no one can really verify whether Karrah said these things. Ultimately, there’s clearly tension between the two, and neither particularly wanted to spill into the public eye.

The Mitch Situation Unfolds

Just a day before this tweet regarding Karrah emerged, A Safe Space released a new episode alongside Key Glock who witnessed Yachty violating his co-host , Mitch. In a clip that circulated across X/Twitter, Yachty took credit for Mitch’s success, going as far as claiming his co-host wouldn’t have anything going in life it weren’t for him. Glock kept mum throughout the segment. However, a fan clipped that part of the episode and wrote, “Lil Yachty disrespecting his friend in front of Key Glock.” At the time of writing, the clip gained 9.7M views while a repost of the clip siding with Mitch garnered 901K.

“Mitch. Lil Yachty is not your homie. There’s a time and place to have these conversations. Not on a podcast in front of millions of people to dissect and observe. This is lame as f*ck,” the tweet read. “Don’t do favors for people and then hold it over their head. That’s foul as f*ck.”

Lil Yachty Pulls Receipts On Karrahbooo

Yachty laid it all out during his Instagram Live last night, beginning with Karrahbooo, who he claimed was verbally abusive, entitled, and lacked any rap skills His explosive rant initially denied claims that she was bullied before pivoting over to her catalog of music, which he said he wrote entirely and even provided receipts. “I slowed the beat down, I put 808s specifically on your verse so when it got to your part and the beat dropped, everyone would be like, ‘this girl is the craziest one,” he said in reference to her debut freestyle on On The Radar . He later shared the reference track to back his claim.

“I wrote every f*cking verse you've done… I dressed you. I dressed all five of y'all n***as bro. I dressed five n***as every time we stepped out the house. I put an outfit on everybody. I put eight carats of earrings on everybody ear. I put three chains on all y'all neck,” he continued. “I changed your mother f*cking life and you are here lying, talking about some: 'We bully you'... That shit got me f*cked up, bro. You got me f*cked up, bro. You disrespectful, bro. You talk to people crazy. You tell people that they are nothing. You tell people you're going to spit on them. You tell people they poor and you talk to my f*cking label crazy. You claim I was stealing money.” He also alleged that she put Concrete $900K in the hole and he never recouped on his investment.

Mitch Catches Strays

Quite frankly, this aspect of the entire rant didn’t paint Yachty in the best light. Once again, the powers of social media broke Yachty completely as he bashed Mitch for failing to address random social media users criticizing him. In fact, Yachty’s emotions completely took control of him to the point where he decided to cancel their podcast abruptly. First, he explained that Mitch approached him to do a podcast, which Yachty obliged, in order to help his co-host and friend build a platform.

“I ain't want to do no motherf*cking podcast n***a, I'm a f*cking rapper... I put $400,000 in Mitch pocket,” he said. “I ain’t f*ckin’ with Mitch, bro. I been sleep all day, I wake up to this crazy sh*t. I say, ‘Mitch, how the f*ck you ain’t go on the internet and tell these folks that we playin’, bruh?’” According to Boat, Mitch downplayed the situation, allegedly claiming, “It’s Twitter, bruh. You know how they is.” Yachty then cussed out Mitch for not defending him on the Internet against strangers and subsequently decided to cancel the podcast. “All I do is help people, bruh. I don’t get nothing from none of this sh*t,” Yachty added.

Mitch Clears The Air

In a series of tweets, Mitch finally addressed the narrative surrounding his relationship with Boat. “please don’t let that clip misguide you it doesn’t represent me and yachty’s friendship at all we joke around pretty harsh sometimes too much fr sometimes but irl it’s nothing but respect and love i can’t even get on here and act like it’s not,” he said.

Later, he made it clear that he has always had his own thing going on, even before meeting Lil Yachty. “i ain’t nobody lil bro never been check my history i had stats before i met bro and got even more now, all i ever wanted to do was just focus on the music and being involved in the culture in a positive way i hope none of this hinders that,” he wrote.

Lil Yachty Clashes With Mitch’s Ex/Cousin?

Though it seemed like the dust had settled, a new party entered the chat: Mitch’s supposed ex, Camille. Sharing a voice note to social media, she slammed Yachty for his alleged treatment of Mitch over the years. “Like, I been telllin’ Mitch you’re a bogus ass n***a. I been sayin’ that sh*t ‘cause you are. You are a bogus ass n***a,” she said. Then, she threatened to pull out receipts backing up everything she said.

In response, Yachty quickly tweeted and deleted a voice note refuting her claims . While Camille claimed that Mitch took on a managerial role for Yachty and often had to be in meetings, Yachty said that his co-host had been lying to her the whole time. He went on to say that Mitch only used Camille for a place to stay before revealing that she was, in fact, the cousin that Mitch claimed to have slept with during an episode of A Safe Space podcast. She later fired back on Twitter Spaces.
