Seacart 30'

The 60-footers have opened Pandora’s Box, but is it acceptable that only a handful of professionals are able to experience the excitement of sailing a trimaran on one hull? Seacart’s answer is no!

The end of a run in the channel leading to La Trinité!

You need to learn how to use the Seacart…

Starting to bear away: the rubber marks can be seen behind!

This trimaran literally fixes a smile on its crew’s lips!

Is all this really reasonable?

The Seacart 30' costs as much as a second-hand 40 to 45’ cruising catamaran, demands a progressive apprenticeship and good physical condition, and, although it has a double berth (on an inflatable mattress) and 3 additional singles, the Spartan character of its accommodation deliberately orientates the crew towards a hotel booking at stopovers. However, it is the only cruising (racing?) boat in the world to propel the leisure sailor to the Valhalla of the sailing world and to establish restricted relativity connections between time and distance! Which other machine could take us from Quiberon to La Rochelle in an afternoon (or from Antibes to Calvi, for those in the Mediterranean)?

Test Seacart 30

Finally a trimaran which offers excitement close to that aboard a racing trimaran…

Genesis of the "black bomb"

The Nokia Oops Cup brings together in the Baltic the old 60-footers from the ORMA circuit. The overpowered displays by these machines electrified the Viking racers, and in 2004, Calle Hennix (a Volvo Race veteran) suggested to the prestigious Swedish builder, Marström, that they launch a series of ultra high-performance 30-footers, which could be use...

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

SEACART 30′ (VENDU)

seacart trimaran

THE truly maneuverable and usable exceptional sports machine. Outstanding construction by Marström Composite. Scandinavian presentation and interview (excellent). Extremely neat example, more comfortable than the original version (more ergonomic and practical interior making high-speed cruising pleasant). The SEACART 30 is probably one of the world’s most exciting machines (even the production machine!) of the “Multihull”, the first “production” trimaran to sail constantly on a float (in good conditions) thanks to a quality of construction of exception in prepreg carbon post-cured at 120°. The bar sensations are fantastic. Inside a double berth and two possible bunks for quick “coastal camping” use! This optimized example (interior, cockpit, etc.) is undoubtedly the most versatile Seacart for mixed use (racing-fast cruising). Perfect tuning trailer included for transport in Europe

History of the Seacart30 nr 6 BY OWNER: The boat took part in many successful races before becoming mine. I wanted a more race oriented boat and looked at the Seacart30 but thought it lacked a proper cockpit and wanted another interior. Many users had complained about the lack of cockpit protection (in the original version, the cockpit is almost non-existent). A real opportunity arose, a partially damaged boat came on the market on which we were able to create a new cockpit and a nicer interior. The boat has been modified by a team of very experienced carbon fiber specialists. (Experience building Volvo Ocean Race boats and America’s Cup catamarans.) Every detail of the construction process has been evaluated (weight and resistance). Some weak points that were spotted on Seacart have been avoided. All efforts resulted in a lighter boat than other Seacart30s. It weighs 948 kg sailready. (After some membrane gennaker changes and a bigger battery, the boat is now registered in the Swedish SRS system for 966 kg.) After the refit and modification, the boat took part in both offshore races and coastal regattas, appearing in places of honor (Gotland runt, one of the largest offshore races in Europe, Fyn runt in Denmark as a racing crew or as a reduced crew). The boat never gave up and had no problems despite sometimes very harsh conditions. The focus has really been on navigation and reliability with this boat. Everything has been kept simple and functional. There is a code 0 which is 50m2 instead of 30 originally. It really is a great solution upwind in light winds as well as in strong downwind conditions. There are 2 genackers, one of which is hardly used. Although used in regattas and races, the family used it for a week-long holiday. There is a CE legal trailer, 80kmh,

The special attention paid to stability in the foil design allows the Catri to be a single sailor vessel, even at foiling speed, with no special physical abilities. Best known for its use in camp cruising excursions, the   Sea Pearl   offers a roomy main hull and particular ability to sail in very shallow waters, making beaching and launching a breeze. The lightweight Sea Pearl trimaran is easy to tow, and the larger-than-expected cabin opens this vessel up for overnight adventures with plenty of storage space. The simple design makes the Sea Pearl notoriously low maintenance, and the ease it takes to rig and sail it add to the overall delight of owning this boat.

Quick, lightweight, roomy, and trailerable,   Farrier trimarans   are made for versatility to fit every sailor’s needs. Different Farrier models are available in plan or kit boat form for those who appreciate building their boat themselves, but of course, also as the full production sail-away boat for the rest of us. Single-handed rigging and launching takes under 10 minutes from start to finish, minimizing hassle and getting you on the water fast. LENGTH: Traditionally, LOA (length over all) equaled hull length. Today, many builders use LOA to include rail overhangs, bowsprits, etc. and LOD (length on deck) for hull length. That said, LOA may still mean LOD if the builder is being honest and using accepted industry standards developed by groups like the ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council).
