On September 7 at the S.B. Yacht Club’s Charity Regatta for VNA Health, guests enjoyed a splendid, full day of socializing, dining, and watching the regatta at the S.B. Yacht Club (SBYC) and on spectator boats. This year marked the 20th anniversary of the event, which over the years has raised more than $2.5 million for the treasured nonprofit VNA Health (formerly Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care).

The day began with brunch at the club, where guests enjoyed ocean views, perfect weather, and steel drum music. In a short program, emcee David Moorman shared his gratitude to VNA for the care his mother received in her last days at Serenity House, remarking that in those darkest days, VNA staff had infinite amounts of strength, resolve, and resources to guide him and his family.

Throughout the day, I heard many words of praise and gratitude for the care that they and loved ones had received at VNA, a level of care that some noted far surpassed what they had experienced with for-profit institutions. Every year, more SBYC members experience in some regard VNA Health’s services, and, quite fittingly, every year VNA Health is again chosen as the event’s beneficiary.

Commodore Dennis Boneck recognized the event honorees: first responders from a multitude of agencies that serve the S.B. Harbor. Guests were introduced to Project Harmony, a program run by 9-1-1 At Ease International, a nonprofit that offers counseling and therapy to first responders and their families. In Project Harmony, healing is provided through songwriting and music. Two participants, Lois Mahalia and Hannah Griffin, beautifully performed a tribute to the first responders present.

Many guests then boarded one of the 16 spectator boats for a fun couple of hours. I boarded Torqua , Geoff and Alison Rusack’s 86-foot Ocean Alexander luxurious motor yacht, where we enjoyed cruising the harbor, watching the regatta, and socializing in the various deck and cabin lounge areas.

After guests returned to the club, the party continued with a buffet dinner and guests seated at tables on the sand, while Davitt Felder & Band provided great music. Awards were presented to the winners of the three race classes: Dr. Laura Schlessinger, Warrior ; Ole Eichhorn, Spot the 505 ; and Shawn Hughes, Picante .

Funds raised by the Regatta go to VNA Health’s charitable community programs and services.

VNA Health operates a multitude of programs, including home health, hospice (at Serenity House and in-home), and palliative care. Last year, the value of VNA’s charity care was $2.4 million, which included $1.7 million in services for uninsured and underinsured patients in these programs.

The other $700,000 went to programs it offers beyond the standard ones, such as its Loan Closet, bereavement care, and integrative therapies such as Reiki, pet therapy, and music services. Last year, VNA’s 380-plus employees and volunteers served more than 8,700 patients.

VNA Health always welcomes new volunteers, including for hospice (full training provided), music services (for those who play an instrument), Loan Closet (for those who like to tinker and fix equipment), pet therapy (owner/pet teams) and veterans’ program (for vet volunteers to connect with vet patients).

Perfect autumn conditions greeted the 10 boats that made up the fleet in the fifth annual X-Yachts regatta held on Sydney Harbour last weekend

Perfect autumn conditions greeted the 10 boats that made up the fleet in the fifth annual X-Yachts regatta held on Sydney Harbour last weekend. Ranging from 33 to 44ft in size the handicap fleet raced a windward/leeward course from Clifton Gardens to Rose Bay.

Defending champion and winner for the last two years, Howard De Torres skippering Nips ‘n Tux, returned from a successful Sydney to Mooloolaba race to compete in the event. De Torres has also taken out the CYCA’s Bluewater Point score for IMS, Cape Byron Series for IRC and Tasman Performance Series for PHS for the 03/04 season.

The fleet raced in a light easterly breezed that topped 12kts during the day’s racing. A ship heading out the harbour split the fleet in the first start and Sextant steered by new owner Denis Doyle took advantage of the situation to put some distance on the rest of the fleet who let the ship pass. ‘We had a fantastic regatta and were pleasantly surprised at the boat’s performance, to be able to beat the defending champion Howard De Torres was a thrill as well’ commented Doyle. ‘We plan to compete in the BMW Winter Series then the Sydney to Gold Coast race and hopefully the Gosford to Lord Howe and Rolex Sydney to Hobart races later this year.’

Two new yachts to the fleet, the X43s have had positive results with Great Xpectations skippered by Rod Wills finishing third in IRC class A in the Coffs Harbour Series earlier this year. White Satin owned by Bill and Nevine Neill won the CYCA’s Autumn SOPS series on IRC and PHS with North South Yachting’s Andrew Parkes onboard for the X Yacht regatta and the Autumn series.

X-Knox was skippered by Tony Kirby from North South Yachting in the first race then race two saw ‘TK’ venture forward to the bow with Bob Mulkearns from North South Yachting steering for the second race.

Neil Edwards steering his X 332 Xanthe, the smallest boat in the fleet, placed fifth in the overall placing’s. Edwards will be trading up to a Bavaria 44 in the next month.

Steering his X 442 Toy Box, the largest boat in the fleet, Ian Box is a regular on Sydney harbour during the year and is also a supporter of the Whitsundays racing. Box, the Commodore of Middle Harbour Yacht Club finished third overall after a second and third in the series. He also won the Line Honours trophy

Xr series : X-Yachts announces new model for regatta sailors

Jochen Rieker

 ·  11.08.2023

Long waterline, long bowsprit and, as always, three stripes above the waterline: the Xr is intended to be sporty, but not radical

Little can be seen from the first drawings. In fact, the construction phase is only just beginning in these weeks. However, the aim is clear and unambiguous: "Our top priority is to build a winning boat," Nielsen told YACHT.

With the first model in the new Xr series, which will probably be followed by a second, most likely smaller one, X-Yachts is continuing the history of the Haderslev shipyard. The early X-79 and X-99 were already successful regatta yachts; later came very fast one-tonne boats, the IMX series in the 90s and noughties and finally the X-35 and X-41, the Danes' youngest racer-cruisers to date.

Recently, however, little has been heard or seen in the segment that once characterised the success and reputation of the Scandinavian boat builders. The reason for this was the reorganisation of the brand, which was accompanied by an economic turnaround.

Several regatta sailors migrated from X-Yachts

Under the leadership of Kræn B. Nielsen and with Ib Kunøe as a partner, the shipyard, which had been operating close to the waterline financially for some time, found its way back onto the road to success, which was partly due to the good demand for the yachts of the so-called Xpure line (X 4.0 to 5.6), which were more orientated towards fast cruising. This went hand in hand with the thinning out of the sporty Xp series.

This created space and, to a certain extent, a need in the portfolio to demonstrate its own capabilities again - which was emphasised by the guest appearance at the ORC World Championship. Enquiries from committed dealers and owners also prompted the management team to take action. A number of them have since moved on to other brands, including such a loyal and enthusiastic, yet demanding X-Yachts supporter as Marc Lichte. The head of design at Audi is currently sailing a new build from J-Boats, but is still emotionally attached to the Danes and is said to have contributed to the fact that X is now developing a racer/cruiser again.

The positioning and structure chosen by the Danes is interesting. The 42 to 44-foot boat is deliberately not intended to be a one-design, unlike the new ClubSwan 43, which will debut next year. "We want to be able to continuously develop the Xr further," said CEO Nielsen.

New Xr series should be able to win its class at the ORC Worlds

To this end, he is building up a network of experts to support and drive this development. These include North Sails, for example, but also Max Gurgel as a clever expert in rating and performance optimisation. The Danes are already in talks with other high-calibre names on the regatta scene. They want to attack with two teams that are supported by the shipyard: one in Northern Europe and one in the Mediterranean, which has so far been the domain of Grand Soleil and Italia Yachts.

Despite its focus on success, the Xr series will not be an uncompromising racer, but a "dual-purpose design", as the shipyard boss emphasises. Plug-in modules are planned for the interior, which can be quickly removed when sailing around the tonnes. This improves marketability after several years of racing, says Nielsen.

In one respect, however, the claim remains unshakeable: Success. "The new Xr should be able to win its class at the ORC Worlds," he says. So it will be interesting to see.

Hundreds of Sailors Ready to Race in the 60th Edition of Rolex Big Boat Series

x yachts regatta

One of the best sailboat racing venues in the world, iconic San Francisco Bay, is ready to turn it on for the 60th edition of the Rolex Big Boat Series at St. Francis Yacht Club, September 11-15, 2024. The most prestigious regatta on the West Coast drew 71 boats and nearly 700 sailors to the docks of St. Francis Yacht Club, to hear what classes will race for Rolexes and perpetual trophies on Wednesday night, and to start preparing for the first race on Thursday, September 12. With a strong turnout in one design classes and ORC divisions, organizers are thrilled to welcome members and guests to be a part of the action on the water and shoreside.

“Having been involved in this epic West Coast regatta for some four decades, it is my honor and privilege as Commodore to welcome our members and guests to the 60th edition of the Rolex Big Boat Series,” said Chris Perkins, 2024 Commodore of St. Francis Yacht Club and a past winner of the event. “I wish the best of luck to our competitors who are here to compete in one of the world’s most spectacular racing venues. Sail fast and enjoy our outstanding hospitality.”

x yachts regatta

Rolex Big Boat Series’ extensive history of champions is a tribute to the depth of talent that graces the event and this year, a solid fleet stacked with talented and tough competition is expected.

“We have 30 J/105s starting again this year, which is great to see, and the ORC fleet is diverse and deep in talent with past winners returning to defend their titles,” says Felix Weidling, Race Director of St. Francis Yacht Club. “We always have our competitors’ best interests in mind and after taking in sailors’ feedback from last year, we continue to improve this important event which is a cornerstone of West Coast sailboat racing.”

Perennial Rolex Big Boat winner in the J/105 class, Ryan Simmons and his well-seasoned team on Blackhawk are eager to see how the competition will play out in the competitive San Francisco-based J/105 fleet. Blackhawk took first in class in 2019, 2021 and 2023, and second in 2022. Simmons does not take for granted that his luck will bear out for another win, although he and his crew are talented enough—and hopeful.

x yachts regatta

“We’re lucky, we have low turnover on our team—we’ve been sailing together a long time and it’s the big difference,” says Simmons. “Our competitive edge this year will be consistency. In the first two days of the regatta, you can’t lock in the win, but you can definitely take yourself out of contention, so sailing smart the first couple of days is key, but Saturday and Sunday are really where the championship will be won.”

Hot to prevail against Blackhawk is NeNe , owned and skippered by Tim Russell who has played bridesmaid many times, often finishing in the top three. He’s currently leading the local J/105 fleet in the class championship series, making him a serious podium contender.

“A first place on NeNe is alluding me!” says Russell. “You have to take chances and I usually approach every regatta being super conservative. On my starts I’m trying to win one end or the other and let our boat speed take care of itself and minimize mistakes, but in Big Boat you have to gamble.”

Peter Wagner won last year’s ORC-C division on Skeleton Key, the J/111 he’s owned since 2015. Winner of the J/111 North Americans for two years in a row and St. Francis Yacht Club’s Sailor of the Year in 2023, Wagner is a tough act to follow. He’s been racing Rolex Big Boat Series for almost 25 years and is looking forward to the solid competition, great conditions and fun social gatherings.

“It’s always one of the highlights of our season and certainly the highlight of racing on San Francisco Bay,” says Wagner. “In this particular event we’ve raced in various one design classes as well as ORR and now ORC and we’re really excited about the momentum around ORC. I think it will be a really competitive event. Some of the best, most reliable and most fun sailing conditions in the world are this time of year at this venue, the race management is second to none and the social side is always spectacular. There is always a great group of sailors that convenes around RBBS.”

x yachts regatta

Other boats returning to defend their 2023 titles include the J/88 Pelagia owned and skippered by Christos Karamanolis, Cape 31 M2 owned and skippered by Marc McMorris, and J/109 Reverie, owned and skippered by John Arens. ADDITIONAL AWARDS

All three ORC divisions will also be contesting the West Coast Championship.

The Storm Trysail Team Trophy to the three-boat team who have entered and achieved the best score. The team must be comprised of one boat racing in an ORC class, one from a one-design class, and one from any other class.

“I’m excited to lead the Rolex Big Boat Series in its 60th anniversary year,” says Susan Ruhne, who chairs the regatta and is the 2024 Rear Commodore of St. Francis Yacht Club. “The event is such an important part of the StFYC’s history and a favorite for so many sailors and spectators to experience. There is nothing like watching 70-plus boats on three race courses duke it out on San Francisco Bay, including the classic downwind run from the Golden Gate Bridge back to the club. I am also very proud that we continue to maintain Rolex Big Boat Series’ status as a Clean Regatta, a foundation of the event.”

The 2024 Rolex Big Boat Series is targeting Platinum Level Clean Regatta status, the highest distinction from Sailors for the Sea. A pre-regatta volunteer event with the Parks Conservancy was held at Crissy Field on Wednesday morning. Organizers have taken efforts to remove all single-use plastic from the event, and competitors spectators are invited to meet local non-profits who serve as Sustainability Partners for the event. Sail to Shelter will be collecting old sails on site to recycle into shelter for humanitarian aid.

Quantum Sails will be hosting Daily Weather Briefings every race day at 0730. All sailors are invited to tune in for the forecast from experts at Sailflow Weather and to hear local knowledge about San Francisco Bay conditions and currents.

Racing is set to begin tomorrow, September 12, at 1100 local time for most classes and 1300 for the Classics.
