I love the appliance! However, I’m not so sure that “unlike most girls” is correct as lots of girls and women I’ve known have like the nautical theme. Maybe it’s where you grow up? I grew up on the coast so it was a given…my G-ma even had the ubiquitous fishing net decor in her bathroom and utility room.

' src=

I’m pleased you like my pattern!

What I really meant was contrary to what the general public might think, where every little boy outfit has a nautical-themed and every little girl outfit has a princess-themed. I didn’t mean any discrimination. Sorry if I offended.

You in no way offended! I was forced to wear pastel pink as a child and it’s scarred me for life! 🙂 I have red hair and a peachy complexion and pink makes me look like I just recovered from a long illness. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and that’s yours. Thanks for the clarification. Happy day!

BTW, auto correct somehow changed applique pattern to appliance. Go figure!

crochet sailboat applique pattern free

Free crochet boat pattern

Try this fun and easy free crochet boat pattern! It works fantastic as sailboat wall decor and can also be used as a crochet boat applique. To add dimension and texture, you can stuff the boat with poly-fil. The sailboat consists of two parts: the boat and the sail. The sail is worked back and forth in rows, increasing on the sides and at the top of the triangle. Then, you assemble the sail to the boat while working the bottom of the sail. Use 100% cotton yarn for better blocking results, as the boat tends to curve. A 4.0mm crochet hook will give you a boat approximately 1.75 inches high and 4 inches wide.

11+ Amazing Ocean Animal Crochet Appliqué Free Patterns

  • Posted by by Julia
  • June 5, 2023

The ocean is teeming with a myriad of enchanting sea creatures, and it’s no surprise that these delightful beings have captured the hearts of many! As a crochet enthusiast, you and I are lucky enough to have the ability to bring these animals into our homes—in the form of appliques!

Crochet appliques are a fun way to bring in your personality to your crochet projects. You can add them to a beanie, a cardigan, a pouch, a bag—your choices are limitless! A collection of marine wonders stitched on a blanket would be a beautiful addition to your home decor!

Appliques use a very small amount of yarn, so they’re the perfect stash buster! They also primarily use simple stitches, so they are completely accessible to beginners. Don’t forget that you can also resize appliques to suit your needs by going up or down in yarn weight and hook size!

Without further ado, let’s dive into the marine world of adorable ocean animal crochet appliques!

Table of Contents

1. Ocean Friends

This pattern post comes with not one, but four wonderful patterns for our delightful ocean friends: a whimsical seahorse, a playful octopus, a cute starfish, and a delightful turtle. Together, they make for the perfect inhabitants for a marine playground!

The pattern includes clear and concise written instructions and step-by-step video tutorials for each applique. All of them only require knowing basic stitches—no fancy shenanigans required!

2. Octopus and Jellyfish

In this free pattern, you get to make cute smiley octopuses and jellyfish! Whichever you pick to crochet—or both, if you wish!—these happy octopuses and jellyfish will surely brighten your space up and bring happiness into your home!

The distinctions between them lie in the bell decoration on the jellyfish, the rounder head of the jellyfish, as well as the shorter tentacles in the octopus. The stitches used in this pattern are basic, except for front loop only (FLO) and back loop only (BLO) stitches. Here’s a quick video tutorial for those stitches!

3. Little Fishies

These colorful fish will look right at home in a bunting, decorating the sides of a tissue box, or stitched on to a cardigan. What’s wonderful is they’re super simple to make and will take you only 10 minutes to make. Crocheting a bunch will be a breeze!

The pattern writer recommends using cotton yarn so you can block them at the end for a crisp and neat look!

These cute and happy whales come with an adorable spout of water! The spout is created by simply tying a knot of yarn on the top of the whale’s head.

It starts with a simple round of doubles, after which you can start crocheting its tail. The pattern provides two sizes; small and large. Additionally, you can choose whether to add the white underbelly or to let your whale be one solid color.

5. Starfish

Colorful starfish are guaranteed to add a playful and light-hearted touch to anywhere you put them on!

These starfish involve constructing a magic circle, slip stitching into it, chaining then crocheting back to the center to create the arms.

Whether you’re a fan of Sebastian (and who isn’t?) or not, there is no question that this heart-shaped, googly-eyed crab is as charming as crabs come! The crab’s body is created by first crocheting a heart, before adding on its cute little legs and soulful eyes.

7. Seahorse

This beautifully intricate seahorse requires more attention to detail than the other patterns in this post! Its graceful curves and delicate features make it a centerpiece for any crochet project.

This pattern comes with thorough written instructions and contains photos for each step.

8. Heart Fish

Wouldn’t you agree that these heartfish are simply adorable? If you look closely, you’ll realize that these heartfish consist of just a small heart sewed on to its bigger counterpart!

With so many color choices, you can choose to add these heartfish as embellishments to any of your projects! Remember, you also have a choice in the sizes—simply increase or decrease your yarn weight and hook size!

Dolphins are charming and intelligent creatures, and it’s only natural to want to incorporate them into your projects! Which you can now, by adding this dolphin applique!

The pictures look deceptively simple—this pattern includes three special techniques you might not be familiar with: crocheting on the other side of a foundation chain, a half triple crochet, and a picot stitch. The pattern does explain how to do them though, so feel free to jump straight in!

Here we have a sweet family of turtles lining up, ready to explore the world! This pattern post provides not one, not two, but five different patterns for these turtles of varying sizes! A big turtle, a small turtle, a tiny turtle, a baby turtle, and a baby turtle still in its little white shell!

The pattern comes with concise written instructions and a series of photos for the sewing sections. I think we can all agree that these turtles are adorable, but be warned that there is a lot of sewing involved in this project!

11. Narwhal

There’s nothing that can portray the magic of the sea better than the unicorns of the sea, our beloved narwhals! These narwhals’ bodies were crocheted in one piece with no sewing, though there is some sewing required for its horn, facial features, and heart tummy spot.

12. Penguin

The one and only marine bird in this post, a classic favorite—the penguin! This penguin starts off with rounds of dcs, and its wings are attached to the main body. Its face is embroidered, and its happy little feet are sewed on to the bottom of the applique!

The use of crochet appliques brings several benefits, including the ability to customize and add flair to garments, accessories, and home décor items. Moreover, there’s a vast variety of crochet applique patterns for free available, catering to all skill levels and interests, from animals and flowers to seasonal themes and whimsical characters.

Tips and Tricks for Crochet Appliques

Choosing the right yarn and hook size for crocheting appliques.

The choice of yarn and hook size is crucial when creating crochet appliques. A smaller hook than the yarn recommends can create tighter stitches, providing a neater and more defined finish suitable for appliques. The yarn type can also impact the texture and appearance, with cotton yarns often preferred for their stiffness and durability.

How to properly attach crochet appliques to projects

Attaching crochet appliques to projects can be done through sewing or using fabric glue, depending on the item and the desired outcome. Sewing with a matching thread can offer a more secure attachment, while glue provides a quick and easy alternative for items that do not require washing.

Adding details and embellishments to crochet appliques

To further personalize crochet appliques, crafters can add details and embellishments such as beads, buttons, or embroidery. These additions can enhance the applique’s texture and appearance, making it even more special.

Take a look at the examples below to check the current trends and search for links to paid and free crochet patterns for appliques under the pictures.

What materials do i need to make a crochet applique?

To start making a crochet applique, you’ll need yarn, a crochet hook suitable for the yarn’s weight, a pair of scissors, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends. The type of yarn (cotton, acrylic, wool, etc.) can vary based on personal preference or the requirements of the specific applique pattern you’re following.

How do I attach a crochet applique to a project?

Crochet appliques can be attached to projects either by sewing them on with a yarn needle and matching yarn or using fabric glue for a no-sew option. Sewing ensures a secure attachment, while glue offers a quick and easy method for items not subjected to heavy use or frequent washing.

Can I use crochet appliques on clothing items?

Yes, crochet appliques are perfect for personalizing clothing items. They can be attached to hats, scarves, sweaters, and even jeans to add a unique touch. Ensure the yarn used is suitable for the item’s care instructions.

What are some popular designs for crochet appliques?

Popular designs for crochet appliques include flowers, animals, hearts, seasonal motifs like snowflakes or pumpkins, and characters or shapes related to hobbies and interests. These designs can range from simple to complex, catering to all skill levels. You can find free patterns for all at Pattern Center.

Are there any tips for making a crochet applique look more professional?

To make a crochet applique look more professional, use a smaller hook size to achieve tighter stitches, ensure consistent tension throughout the work, and neatly weave in all ends. Adding details with embroidery or beads can also enhance the applique’s appearance.

How do I increase or decrease the size of a crochet applique?

To adjust the size of a crochet applique, you can change the yarn weight and hook size. Using a thicker yarn and larger hook will increase the applique size, while a thinner yarn and smaller hook will decrease it. Adjusting the pattern by adding or removing rounds or rows can also alter the size.

Are there any special techniques for crocheting an applique?

Special techniques for crocheting an applique might include surface crochet for added detail, working in the back loop only for a ridged texture, or incorporating slip stitches for sharper edges. The choice of technique can greatly influence the final look of the applique.

Can I sell crochet appliques i make from these patterns?

Whether you can sell crochet appliques made from specific patterns depends on the copyright or usage rights specified by the pattern designer. Many designers allow items made from their patterns to be sold, provided credit is given, but it’s important to check each pattern’s terms.

Do I need to know advanced crochet stitches to make these appliques?

No, you do not need to know advanced crochet stitches to make most crochet appliques. Many patterns can be completed using basic stitches such as single crochet, double crochet, and slip stitch. However, some more detailed appliques may require intermediate techniques.

How do I choose the right yarn for a crochet applique?

Choose yarn based on the desired look and feel of the applique, as well as the project it will be attached to. Cotton yarn is often preferred for its stiffness and vivid colors, making it suitable for appliques that require definition. For softer appliques, wool or acrylic yarns can be used.

Are there any beginner-friendly crochet applique patterns?

Yes, there are plenty of beginner-friendly crochet applique patterns that focus on simple shapes and basic stitches, making them an excellent way for beginners to practice and build their skills. Find the free crochet patterns for appliques above, and check out the Beautiful Crochet Applique Patterns for Decorating Everything for more creative ideas.

Can I use these patterns to make multiple appliques for a project?

Absolutely! Crochet appliques can be made in multiples to create themes or patterns across a project, such as a blanket, garland, or themed clothing item.

Are there any alternative ways to use crochet appliques besides attaching them to a project?

Besides being sewn onto projects, crochet appliques can be used as embellishments for greeting cards, bookmarks, keychains, buntings, and even framed as art. They offer a creative way to add a personal touch to gifts and home decor.

How long does it typically take to make a crochet applique?

The time it takes to make a crochet applique varies based on the complexity of the design and the crocheter’s skill level. Simple appliques can take as little as 15 minutes, while more detailed ones may require several hours.

Do these patterns include instructions for different crochet hook sizes?

Many crochet applique patterns will suggest a hook size that works best with the recommended yarn weight. However, you may need to adjust the hook size based on your tension or if you are using a different yarn weight to achieve the desired size and appearance of the applique.

Crochet appliques are incredibly versatile. They can be incorporated into a wide range of projects, from adding a special touch to a plain sweater or hat to decorating bags, blankets, and even wall art. The possibilities are endless, and with a bit of creativity, crochet appliques can transform ordinary items into personalized treasures. And it’s so good that there are many applique crochet patterns for free.

Appliques offer a fantastic way to add character and style to various crochet projects. Their versatility and the broad spectrum of free crochet patterns for appliques available make them a favorite among crocheters. Whether you’re looking to add a personal touch to your work or seeking to experiment with new designs, crochet appliques are a worthwhile addition to your crochet repertoire.
