HanseYachts AG establishes the Balticdesign Institute in Poland

December 15 2020

Written by Yachting Art English Edition

HanseYachts AG, one of the leading leisure boat yards in the world (Hanse, Dehler, Privilège, Sealine, Fjord) with factories in Poland, Germany and France and its subsidiary Technologie Tworzyw Sztucznych Sp. z. o.o., a production unit dedicated to composite, located near Szczecin, Poland, are establishing a new development unit in Szczecin, the BalticDesign Institute.

HanseYachts AG establishes the Balticdesign Institute in Poland

The leading European country in terms of the number of boats built, with shipyards such as Groupe Bénéteau, Sunreef Yachts, Galeon, HanseYachts, and numerous production units, notably working for Quicksilver and Bayliner, Poland is further strengthening its attractiveness in the nautical industries, with the creation of the BalticDesign Institute.

At the origin of this institute, the German group HanseYachts decided to locate this design center in Szczecin,, created in partnership with its Polish subsidiary Technologie Tworzyw Sztucznych (specializing in composites), itself located in this Hanseatic city.

The BalticDesign Institute will present itself as a kind of creative campus, housing specialists in naval architecture, structural calculation, designers and creative people.

With this creation, HanseYachts, wishes to strengthen its engineering pole, to accelerate in the long term the time to market of its new units.

This division, which will welcome professionals from around the world, will also allow the German group to strengthen the identity of its different brands and its industrial efficiency, which is among the highest in Europe.

The BalticDesign Institute will open its doors in January and will launch a vast recruitment plan throughout Europe, with 20 people expected to work there within 3 years.

Decryption - not having closed its production plants during the first European containment, following the example of groups such as Bavaria or Grand Large Yachting in France, the German group HanseYachts is showing a fine dynamic, which should next year result in fairly substantial market share gains, following the example of its compatriot Bavaria. In this context, the Group is seeking to reduce its time to market and the differentiation of its different ranges. The creation of a creative campus is intended to respond to this strategy.

The Hanse Group opens a joint design centre for its boats in Poland

The Hanse Nautical Group opens a design division with its subcontractor TTS

Germany's leading yachting company, the Hanse Group, has announced the opening of the Baltic Design Institute, a centre for naval architecture and development common to all its sail and powerboat brands. Recruitments and developments are announced.

Hanse opens a development centre for yachting

The German nautical group Hanse, also owner of the Dehler and Moody sailing yacht brands, the Privilège Marine multihulls and the Fjord and Sealine motor boats, has announced the creation of the Baltic Design Institute in Szczecin, Poland. Founded in partnership with its subcontractor Technologie Tworzyw Sztucznych Sp. z. o.o. (TTS), a specialist in composite materials for pleasure boats based nearby, the new institute will be the development centre of the German group, whose production is divided between Germany, Poland and France. It will house naval architects, designers and structural engineers working for all the group's brands.

Close cooperation with shipyards in Europe

The integration of design support functions in the major yachting groups is already a trend. The Bénéteau Group, with its subsidiary BJT, or the Brunswick Group has shared R&D and design centres for all their brands. In parallel with its announcement, the management of the Hanse Group is nevertheless seeking to reassure the members of the design offices of the various brands. Raoul Bajorat, the group's development director, underlines "the remarkable and close integration of the designers, engineers, technicians and production sites of the HanseYachts AG family throughout Europe" The location, close to the factories in Greifswald and Goleniow should facilitate exchanges.

The centre is scheduled to open in January 2021. Recruitment is expected to bring the staff to 20 by the end of 2023.

Made in Goleniów - Hanse 460 named "European Yacht of the Year 2022" - MarinePoland.com

The Hanse 460 yacht, which is largely built at the Technologie Tworzyw Sztucznych factory in the Goleniów Industrial Park, was recognized by the international jury as the "European Yacht of the Year 2022" in the Family Cruiser category. The Hanse 460 outperformed renowned competitors such as Dufour 470 or Oceanis 34 and thus won the world's most important award in the sailing industry.

The winners were decided by the votes of a 12-person jury consisting of the editors of the most important European sailing magazines.

- Hanse 460 convinces with attractive aesthetics, offers pleasant sailing - justifies the choice of one of the jurors, Toby Hodges from Yachting World (Great Britain).

Particularly noteworthy is the ratio of high quality to attractive price. This makes the world delight with the vessel, which is perfect for joint, family sailing trips.

As Andreas Unger, Hanse Product Manager comments: - We are extremely proud to receive the Sailing Industry Oscar. The whole team worked passionately on this boat and fought for success. Our decision to work with designers from Berret-Racoupeau turned out to be right.

Maciej Twardowski, Managing Director at Technologie Tworzyw Sztucznych is not hiding his satisfaction with the award, it is here that many elements of the winning unit are created.

- This is not the first award received by a yacht built in our Goleniów plant - says Maciej Twardowski. - We are pleased with these awards because they prove that we are able to create great units and that the quality of the products leaving our plant is the highest possible. This award motivates us and we will undoubtedly continue to strive for excellence to surprise sailors with new solutions that will make sailing around the world even more fun - he adds.

The Hanse 460 combines innovative design with traditional Hanse values such as fast cruise and easy sailing. The newly developed hydrodynamic hull provides a balance between the narrow waterline for better hull speed, and the wide hull above the waterline for the greatest possible space inside the yacht. The new deck design has 14 opening hatches and eight opening windows to ensure maximum lighting and ventilation below the deck.

The large sail area (114 m2 windward and 234 m2 downwind) demonstrates the great potential of the Hanse 460. The standard bowsprit with integrated anchor arm serves as a forward tack point for headsails and gennaker and can be used as an attachment point for a second genoa or reacher stay.

Hanse 460 is another of the models offered by Hanse Yachts, which will fulfill the dreams of customers and allow you to enjoy the freedom and endlessness of water.

This year's "Sailing Oscar" is not the first award for the unit produced in Goleniów. Yachts manufactured in TTS almost every year win the most prestigious awards of the sailing world. Last year, the Dehler 30 One Design was named the best vessel in the US Sail Best Boat competition in the 30-foot boat category. Sailors and jurors decided that the yacht produced near Szczecin is an ideal for sports sailing! Award-winning yachts in recent years have also been Moody DS 41, Hanse 315, Hanse 348, and Dehler 34.

TTS employs nearly 800 people in its plant, and annually produces over 600 yachts and motor boats. Last year, he was awarded the "Made in Szczecin" award, he also won the title of the Enterprise of the Year 2021 in the competition of the Northern Chamber of Commerce.

Hanse yacht in production

Profile of HanseYachts AG

Developed by sailors. Tested on the Baltic Sea. Sold across the world. Since its founding in 1990, HanseYachts AG – which now encompasses six  yacht brands – has become one of the biggest manufacturers of seagoing, series-produced sailing yachts and motor yachts . HanseYachts AG went public in 2007 (General Standard); around 23.23% of its current shares are freely traded. In 2011, Munich-based Aurelius AG became the majority shareholder and currently holds around 76.77% of issued shares.

Second-biggest yacht-builder in the world

Second-biggest yacht-builder in the world

In terms of the number of yachts sold worldwide, HanseYachts AG is the second-biggest manufacturer of seagoing sailing yachts  in the world. In the market for recreational motor yachts, the company is now among the top 10 providers worldwide. Production takes place at the two locations in Greifswald (Germany) and Goleniów (Poland).

Direct access to the Baltic Sea

Direct access to the Baltic Sea and allows HanseYachts AG to test its range of sailing yachts  and  motor yachts  under real-life conditions. Each new product undergoes thorough testing before being placed on the market, and the test results are instantly and directly incorporated in ongoing product development. New materials and components get tested on the water, not just under laboratory conditions.

Some customers travel to the shipyard itself in order to sail their new yacht  to its new home, wherever that may be in the world. A crane enables the sailing yachts and motor yachts to be launched immediately after leaving the production halls. The setting of the mast and the rigging of sailing yachts is carried out on site.

Own production sites

In-house production sites enable fast response times and highly efficient manufacturing. The entire GRP production gets carried out using the meticulous hands-on skills of experienced specialists. The production process ranges from the lamination of small parts and the construction of hulls using the laid-by-hand technique to weight-optimized vacuum infusion for the production of specialized yacht types.

At HanseYachts AG's headquarters in Greifswald (Germany), all wood and interior components get manufactured on the premises. State-of-the-art equipment with CNC milling machines ensures millimeter precise cutting. Highly trained artisans assemble each piece of furniture by hand. The final assembly of all sailboats and motorboats gets carried out in a highly cost-efficient manner on our production lines.

The production site in Poland The beginnings of the Polish branch date back to 1995 - initially under the name Technologie Tworzyw Sztucznych (TTS) . Since then, yacht construction elements such as hulls, decks and floors have been manufactured here. In 2006, the company joined the HanseYachts capital group. The steadily increasing demand for the products led to the factory being moved to a new location in the Goleniów Industrial Park in Łozienica in 2008. A specially adapted, modern production hall for the manufacture of laminates was built there. As a result, our employees work under safe conditions and at the same time protect the environment.  The last few years of our work have been characterized by continuous development. Two warehouses were built in Łozienica, a laboratory and a design studio were expanded.

In 2015 and 2021, we also built two more production halls, where the assembly work for the final finishing of the yachts ready for sale is carried out.  Currently, we offer lamination, yacht fittings as well as the assembly of water, electrical and gas installations, engines, navigation and steering equipment and other equipment required for a yacht. Currently, six yacht models of the Dehler, SEALINE and RYCK brands are manufactured entirely in Łozienica. This means that they can be delivered directly from there to the customer or dealer. The dynamic development and the great interest in the products lead, among other things, to a significant increase in jobs.

The year 2022 marks another milestone: as a long-standing member of HanseYachts AG, the company name was changed to HanseYachts Sp. z o. o. to underline its affiliation to the group.

Qualified employee

A highly skilled workforce

HanseYachts AG employs an annual average of around 1,500 people. Of these, almost 20% are salaried employees and more than 80% are industrial workers. In the Greifswald region (Germany), HanseYachts AG is one of the largest employers.

Own development locations

One of the great strengths of HanseYachts AG is its in-house development department, as well as its dedicated model and mold making department at the main location. The team consists of 40 designers, engineers and technicians, all of whom are top level experts in their fields with many years of experience. In collaboration with renowned yacht designers, they design and construct sailboats  and  motorboats  down to the smallest detail, from interior fittings to deck design, from propulsion engines to air conditioning systems. Two in-house 5-axis CNC milling machines transfer the virtual model into reality up to a component size of 6 by 16 meters. Quality in yacht building starts with the quality of the tool.

As a new design and development center, the Baltic Design Institute in Szczecin complements the development department at HanseYachts AG's headquarters and offers additional expertise in the sectors of yacht design and structural dimensioning. The team of highly qualified employees has many years of international professional experience in yacht design as well as in the marine industry. The close cooperation of all development instances enables the creation of new, forward-looking products.

Premium suppliers

In addition to the components that we produce in-house, we also enlist the services of premium suppliers. We use engines from Volvo, Yanmar and Mercury; navigation electronics from B&G, Garmin and Raymarine; sails from Elvström and Quantum; heating systems from Eberspächer and Webasto; masts from Seldén and Z Spars; fittings from Harken and Lewmar; and running rigging from Liros.
