Exactly a month after the $500 million Koru megayacht was delivered to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, the stunning luxury vessel was spotted for the very first time with its sails unfurled – it’s a sight to behold. The record-breaking megayacht left for her maiden voyage to Gibraltar on April 6 and is currently undergoing sailing sea trials off the coast of Palma de Mallorca, as confirmed by its AIS data. Reportedly, Koru has been joined by its shadow vessel named Abeona . Built by Damen Yachting, the 75-meter superyacht has been designed to function as a support vessel for Koru. Named after the Roman goddess of voyages and departures, the vessel will carry all the toys and tenders that aren’t carried on board the mothership along with accommodating the additional crew. It also features a helipad and hangar for a D14-type helicopter.

Previously known as Y721, Koru was commissioned by Bezos in 2018 after he fell in love with Oceanco’s Black Pearl. Measuring 127 meters in length, it’s the world’s second-largest sailing yacht, with Russian oligarch Andrey Melnichenko’s Sailing Yacht A currently holding the record. Nevertheless, Bezos’ majestic sailing yacht is the largest vessel built in the Netherlands.

Jeff Bezos’ Superyacht Spotted After Maiden Voyage

The vessel rumoured to be Jeff Bezos' superyacht, the 127-metre Oceanco schooner Koru, has been delivered to its owner.

The 127-metre sailing superyacht Koru , widely reported to have been commissioned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has been delivered to its owner.

The Oceanco-built sailing superyacht made its maiden voyage between the Netherlands and Gibraltar on 6 April, following successful sea trials in February in the North Sea.

Oceanco is an industry pioneer known for its advanced projects, including 106.7m Black Pearl , the world’s largest Dynarig sailing yacht.

In recent days, keen yacht spotters have snapped the imposing vessel moored off the coast of Mallorca, one of Spain’s Balearic Islands.

Not a lot is known publically about the yacht, formerly known as Project Y721 , which began transmitting on AIS in January . The name Koru is taken from a Maori phrase meaning ‘new beginnings’, which refers to the spiral shapes seen inside fern fronds.

This post all but confirmed the rumours over its owner — after Bezos himself posted a picture of a koru leaf on his Instagram account to mark New Year. However, neither Bezos nor Oceanco has officially confirmed or denied the ownership rumours. 

The three-masted Oceanco schooner Koru is now the tallest and longest privately owned sailing yacht in the world, overtaking the 106.7-metre Black Pearl . ( Sailing Yacht A measures 142.81- metres but is considered a ‘sail-assisted motor yacht’.)

The yacht, it is claimed, does not have a helipad due to its large sails. However, it is said to have an accompanying support yacht that has been “expressly commissioned and designed to include” a helipad. Jeff Bezos’ partner Lauren Sanchez is a certified helicopter pilot.

It’s estimated the project to build Koru has cost around US$500m, and the yacht will have an upkeep of $25-50m per year.

Koru , the superyacht belonging to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is back in Mallorca after a month-long cruise around the Mediterranean. Bezos and his partner Lauren Sánchez arrived in Mallorca last month where they boarded the Koru, which had been anchored in the Bay of Palma. The couple later got engaged in the South of France.

In May the couple landed in Mallorca on a private plane and were transferred by helicopter to the Abeona, the businessman's support ship. Then they got on an auxiliary boat to get to the Koru . The businessman and the journalist spent the first night in the bay of Palma with the magnificent views of La Seu and during the weekend they toured the Balearic coast. After that they headed to the south of France, where the couple got engaged .

Bezos and Sánchez, born into a Mexican-American family in Albuquerque (New Mexico), made their relationship public for the first time in 2019. Last month the couple lavished gestures of affection in the Calvià area , more specifically on Illetes beach and in Son Caliu and on Wednesday they were photographed in Ibiza, where they disembarked to stroll through Cala Jondal.

Koru is a luxury custom superyacht. The vessel was built in the Netherlands by Oceanco starting in 2021, and delivered in April 2023. It is a three-masted sailing yacht 127 metres (417 ft) long and reported to have cost $500 million or more. When commissioned, the yacht was the second-largest sailing yacht in the world, after Andrey Melnichenko's Sailing Yacht A .

The main peculiarity of this yacht is it moves driven by the kinetic energy generated by its huge sails. This mechanism transforms the movement of the ship into energy, but if the wind does not blow, it has a powerful motor.

Did Bayesian superyacht’s 237ft mast cause it to sink?

B ayesian’s 237ft metal mast may have played a part in the sinking of the superyacht off the coast of Sicily , experts have suggested.

The yacht, named after the mathematical theory Mike Lynch used to make his millions in the tech industry, foundered in the small hours of Monday morning.

Key among potential reasons for the loss of the vessel will be its most striking feature – the aluminium mast.

Four British personnel from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch are on their way to Palermo to carry out a preliminary assessment.

There are also theories that hot overnight temperatures of 27C (80C) could have prompted passengers to leave portholes and windows open – hastening the sinking when the high winds hit.

Launched in 2008 by Perini Navi, Bayesian is one of the 50 largest sailing yachts in the world and her mammoth mast supported a total sail area of almost 32,000 sq ft.

Bayesian had the tallest aluminium mast in the world when it first took to the seas under her former name Salute. The record was overtaken last year when Jeff Bezos, the Amazon billionaire launched his yacht, Koru.

Koru’s masts stretch to 278ft tall according to Boat International magazine.

Tom Sharpe, a former Royal Navy commander and warship captain, said initial reports from survivors and witnesses suggested “that the weather was sufficiently violent to cause her to capsize at anchor”.

Weather reports from Palermo airport, 12 miles west of the yacht, suggest that at about 4am, winds switched from a gentle south-westerly breeze to gusts of 40mph, with temperatures dropping.

Local newspapers have described the weather as a tornado and a waterspout, which is a tornado above water.

The pressure of high winds on the mast could have helped tip the boat over in rough seas, experts have suggested.

Mr Sharpe said capsizing seemed “unlikely” to him given the Bayesian’s size “and that boats like that are designed to survive poor weather – unless something failed at the same time like a valve that let water in and made the whole boat unstable”.

He said it was more likely that the Bayesian had “dragged anchor”. Anchors are designed to lodge on rocks on the seabed, but if the seabed is too soft, or weather is so bad that the anchor is dislodged, then a boat can drag its anchor and drift.

If a boat drifts into an obstruction such as a rock or another boat, this can damage the boat by tearing a hole in its side leading to sinking, Mr Sharpe suggested.

The sea bed off Porticello, the Silician harbour nearest to where Bayesian was moored for the night, consists of a mixture of rocky and muddy areas, according to nautical charts reviewed by The Telegraph.

This means the yacht could have dragged anchor if it had been lowered into a soft, muddy patch of seabed.

A captain of another boat anchored nearby said his vessel was hit by abnormally strong winds on Monday morning.

Karsten Borner said the Sir Robert BP was battered by strong gusts in the early hours of the morning but he managed to stabilise the vessel while anchored by using the engine.

He said as they were doing this, they noticed the Bayesian nearby and manoeuvred to avoid hitting it.

“We managed to keep the ship in position, and after the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone,” said Capt Borner.

Mr Sharpe said: “From a seamanship point of view, the other boat (Sir Robert BP) coming up on her main engines and using those to keep position around [her own] anchor is what you should do. Yacht anchors are often not that robust and that is the best way to avoid putting too much strain on it and/or dragging.”

An alternative theory is that the weight of the mast led the Bayesian to capsize.

A yacht industry source told The Times that the vessel sank after the weight of her mast took the hull beyond its “down-flooding angle” – the point at which a boat cannot right itself after swinging at a steep angle – meaning water rushed over the sides into the interior.

“The wind toppled the mast, which fell over the side, causing the boat to heel over and take on water, capsize and sink very quickly,” the source said.

This can occur whether the mast snapped off or not.

Sam Jefferson, editor of Sailing Today, told The Telegraph: “She has a very tall, aluminium mast – I believe it is the second tallest aluminium mast in the world – and that would not have helped.

“Many yachts with big masts have carbon masts instead of aluminium as these save on weight and improve stability and performance.

“Stability was obviously the problem in the extremely strong winds she was experiencing and I’d assume the boat was pinned on its side and could not right before it filled up with water.”

Another superyacht expert who asked not to be named told The Telegraph that the mast could have pulled the Bayesian over into capsizing, although he expressed some scepticism, saying sailing yachts are designed to prevent that from happening.

He said the anchor-dragging theory was also a plausible explanation for why the Bayesian sank.

Typically, crews try to anchor in safe spots that are sheltered away from the wind, they said.

The Bayesian was moored just off Porticello, a few miles east of Palermo. Prevailing winds from the north-east may have robbed the vessel of the shelter offered by the Sicilian coast, which lay to the west.

Dr Lynch was reportedly aboard the vessel. His wife, Angela Bacares, is among those rescued but six others, including four Britons, are still missing.

One person, reportedly the yacht’s chef, died in the incident and his body was recovered by rescuers.

The Bayesian’s last refit was in 2020.

The vessel was listed for rent for up to €195,000 (£166,000) a week, according to online charter websites.

The interior featured six cabins – one master, three doubles and two twin rooms – for up to a dozen guests, with the crew occupying separate quarters.

Fitted out in a Japanese style, the interior was styled by the Remi Tessler design house.

Under her former name Salute, the yacht won the Best Exterior prize at the World Superyacht Awards in 2009, and the Best Interior at the International Superyacht Society Awards in 2008.

A coastguard statement issued on Monday morning said the missing passengers were of “British, American and Canadian nationality”.

Camper & Nicholsons, managers of the Bayesian, confirmed the vessel sank at about 4.30am following “severe weather”.

The Italian Coast Guard is leading search and rescue operations, and said on Monday it had safely recovered 15 individuals.

The Amazon founder has hosted fellow billionaires , reality TV stars, and Academy-award winners on his 417-foot vessel.

Here are some of the big names who have enjoyed Koru alongside Bezos.

Leonardo DiCaprio

Hollywood hotshot Leonardo DiCaprio is a repeat sailor on Koru.

Bezos hosted an August 2023 party aboard the yacht to celebrate his engagement to Lauren Sánchez, and DiCaprio was in attendance, Page Six reported at the time.

DiCaprio was back on the big boat earlier this month, but this time, he was joined by his 26-year-old girlfriend, Vittoria Ceretti, according to the tabloid .

Representatives for DiCaprio did not respond to BI's request for comment.

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom enjoyed an Italian summer while sailing on Koru earlier this month.

The singer-actor couple were both in attendance at Sánchez's 50th birthday party in 2019, according to Page Six.

Perry and Bloom also joined Bezos and Sánchez in Croatia last year , as did Usher.

The "Woman's World" singer and her "The Lord of the Rings" partner were back on Koru with Bezos, Sánchez, DiCaprio, and Ceretti this month, Page Six reported.

Representatives for Perry and Bloom did not respond to BI's request for comment.

Microsoft founder and billionaire Bill Gates enjoyed Koru's amenities when he attended Bezos and Sánchez's August 2023 engagement party.

Gates was accompanied by his girlfriend, Paula Hurd. The couple was spotted in paparazzi photos lounging on the yacht's deck.

Representatives for Gates did not respond to BI's request for comment.

Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner

Multiple members of the famous reality TV family have hitched a ride aboard Koru.

Kim Kardashian spent time on the megayacht with Bezos and Sánchez earlier this summer as Koru traversed the Aegean Sea near Greece, People reported.

The SKIMS founder's mother, Kris Jenner, and her boyfriend, Cory Gamble, were also on board earlier this month, according to the outlet.

Jenner also attended Bezos and Sánchez's August 2023 engagement party on Koru. The Kardashian matriarch posted a photo of herself sitting next to Sánchez celebrating the engagement.

Representatives for Kardashian and Jenner did not respond to a request for comment from BI.

Wendi Murdoch

Entrepreneur and investor Wendi Murdoch snagged an invite to Bezos and Sánchez's 2023 engagement party aboard Koru, Page Six reported at the time.

Rupert Murdoch's ex-wife was photographed on the yacht in conversation with Gates.

BI reached out to Murdoch for comment.

Whitney Wolfe Herd

Bumble co-founder and billionaire Whitney Wolfe Herd was among Sánchez's female friends who helped celebrate her engagement on Koru last year, BI previously reported.

Herd appeared in photos on Sánchez's Instagram from August 2023.

BI reached out to Herd on Instagram for comment.

Ari Emanuel and Sarah Staudinger

Fashion designer Sarah Staudinger and her husband, Ari Emanuel , CEO of entertainment agency Endeavor, also attended the star-studded engagement party last year.

Staudinger appeared in photos on Sánchez's Instagram presumably taken on Koru from around that time.

Emanuel did not immediately respond to a request for comment. BI was unable to reach Staudinger for comment.

Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield

The two Spiderman actors reportedly attended Bezos and Sánchez's engagement party on Koru last August, Page Six reported at the time.

Representatives for Maguire and Garfield did not respond to BI's request for comment.

Rania Al Abdullah (The Queen of Jordan)

Queen Rania of Jordan was also a reported guest at Bezos and Sánchez's 2023 engagement party, according to Page Six.

After yacht sinks, experts say Mediterranean growing more dangerous

ROME (Reuters) - The shipwreck of a luxury yacht moored off the coast of Sicily is the latest sign that the Mediterranean is becoming a more dangerous sea to sail in, climate experts and skippers say.

One man died and six people are still missing, including British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, after the Bayesian, a 56-metre-long (184-ft) sailboat, was hit by a ferocious storm on Monday, sinking in a matter of minutes.

Climatologists say global warming is making such violent and unexpected tempests more frequent in a sea used as a summer playground for millions of tourists, including a wealthy few sailing its waters on superyachts.

Luca Mercalli, president of Italy's meteorological society, said the sea surface temperature around Sicily in the days leading up to the shipwreck was about 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit), almost three degrees more than normal.

"This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms," he told Reuters.

The changes in "Mare Nostrum" (Our Sea), as the ancient Romans called the Mediterranean, are also being noticed by experienced skippers such as Massimo Aramu, who runs the Akua sailing school on the coast near the Italian capital.

Currently sailing around Greece, Aramu said he did not like navigating Italy's Tyrrhenian coast around Sicily or the Spanish Balearic islands because there are "often critical situations with little warning".

Last week, a storm similar to the one that sank the Bayesian hit the Balearic archipelago, which includes the islands of Ibiza and Mallorca, leaving several yachts washed up ashore.

Giuliano Gallo, a former skipper who crossed the Atlantic and has written several books on sailing, said the Mediterranean was becoming more like the Caribbean, which has areas that many boats steer clear of at certain times of the year.

"But things are less predictable in the Mediterranean," he said.

Another sign of the more erratic weather in the Mediterranean was seen a year ago when thousands of people were killed in Libya by flash floods triggered by a so-called medicane - a supercharged Mediterranean storm fuelled by warmer seas.

Karsten Borner, the captain of a boat that was moored alongside the Bayesian but escaped harm, said Monday's storm had been "very violent, very intense, a lot of water and I think a turning system like a tornado".

He also blamed more frequent episodes of intense heat during the summer months for playing a role in causing such storms.

"The water is ... way too hot for the Mediterranean and this causes for sure heavy storms, like we had one week ago on the Balearics, like we had two years ago in Corsica and so on," he said.

Global technology giants are pushing back against attempts by India's telecom networks to bring internet services under stricter regulation, rejecting arguments that such measures are necessary to create a "level playing field" and address national security concerns. The Asia Internet Coalition (AIC), a powerful industry body that represents Amazon, Apple, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Netflix and Spotify, has forcefully argued against inclusion of the so-called over-the-top (OTT) services in the proposed regulatory framework (PDF) for telecom operators. In a submission to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the AIC said there are fundamental differences in technology, operations and functionality between OTT services and traditional telecom operations.

Le curiosità più assurde di Koru

Koru è stato visto più volte nel Mediterraneo, come per esempio a Maiorca o a largo della Sardegna . Per i paparazzi è un obiettivo ideale: a bordo salgono personaggi illustri della politica e del business, quindi ogni foto ai ponti può catturare un vip eccezionalmente importante .

La curiosità più incredibile di questo veliero lungo ben 127 metri (più di un campo da calcio)? Che non si muove mai come imbarcazione singola. Mai. E di curiosità incredibili ce ne sono tante altre, come per esempio che Koru è l'unico yacht da miliardari di queste dimensioni che può navigare esclusivamente a vela .

La tecnologia degli alberi scelta da Bezos è tra le più lussuose e costose: si tratta di alberi "furler in-boom" capaci cioè di immagazzinare le grandi vele nella parte inferiore dell'albero. Il peso è enorme circa 900 chilogrammi , ma questa soluzione rende possibile tenere il ponte libero da cime. Così da godere di uno spazio esterno immenso .

Poche navi sono tanto lussuose come Koru. Ma nessun fotografo autorizzato è mai salito a bordo e per questo non sappiamo ogni dettagli degli interni. Ma sappiamo che il mega yacht di Jeff Bezos ha suite stupende , piscine con idromassaggio e spazi progettati per il relax all'aperto. A bordo lavorano 40 membri dell'equipaggio, ma il numero massimo di ospiti è 18 : il che significa che ci saranno almeno 2 membri dell'equipaggio a servire ogni ospite.
