$250M superyacht Liva O draws 'big' attention on Seattle's Lake Union

SEATTLE - The superyacht LIVA O, owned by billionaire Stephen Orenstein , has made a notable appearance on Seattle's Lake Union .

Measuring 387 feet, LIVA O is the largest superyacht ever built by the esteemed German shipbuilder Abeking & Rasmussen . For comparison, a Washington state Olympic Class ferry measures 362 feet.

Launched as the shipyard's latest masterpiece, LIVA O represents a significant achievement for Abeking & Rasmussen, which has been in operation for over 115 years. "We have once again succeeded in building an exceptional yacht," said Matthias Hellmann, CEO at Abeking & Rasmussen. "By upholding our values of innovation, quality, and client satisfaction, we have created a yacht that sets new industry standards."

Designed by Joseph Dirand Architecture in Paris, the yacht features a sleek black hull and offers luxurious amenities, including a Neptune Lounge with an underwater view, a swimming pool, a helicopter pad and a crow’s nest. The vessel also employs a diesel-electric propulsion system for quiet navigation and maneuvering.

So how much does a yacht of this size cost? According to Superyacht Fan , Orenstein bought the yacht in 2023 for $250 million and estimates its annual running cost to be $15 to $25 million.

According to Forbes , Stephen Orenstein is a German-American business executive with extensive commercial real estate holdings in Germany, Italy, the U.K. and the U.S., and holds a stake in the German soccer team Eintracht Frankfurt.

Formerly owning 75% of Supreme Group, a logistics firm that supplied food and water to the U.S. Army in Afghanistan, Orenstein took over the company in 1985 after his father's death.

Forbes estimates his net worth at $2 billion.

The yacht's presence in Lake Union is drawing attention from locals and yacht enthusiasts alike, marking a significant milestone in Seattle's maritime scene.

Dubai-based billionaire Stephen Orenstein boasts a net worth of $2 billion, according to Forbes. The 61-year-old owner of the logistics firm Supreme Group inherited his business, founded by his father. It played a significant role in supporting U.S. and NATO forces during military campaigns. Their numerous contracts with the U.S. Department of Defense catapulted their wealth into billions of dollars. The businessman cuts an important figure in the commercial real estate sector in countries such as Germany, Italy, the U.K., and the U.S. Real estate is also a passion and profession of his better half, Petra Orenstein, who owns Cara Investment, boasting massive real estate holdings and development projects in Europe and the United States. SEATTLE -- An incredible, 315-foot, $160-million super-yacht is docked in Seattle's Lake Union. It is believed to be one of the largest, if not the largest, yacht to ever enter Lake Union. According to the Puget Sound Business Journal, the Vava II is owned by Swiss-Italian multibillionaire Ernesto Bertarelli and his wife, Kristy. The PSBJ says the yacht has six decks, a swimming pool and rooms for 36 guests and almost that many crew. It costs a half-million dollars just to refuel this yacht. The PSBJ said the yacht is stopping at Seattle for repairs and provisions and may be headed to Alaska for the summer after having come from Hawaii.

A superyacht measuring 314 feet long and owned by billionaire Ernesto Bertarelli and his wife, a former Miss U.K., docked in Lake Union Friday.

The VAVA II, reportedly in Seattle to refuel, is the 34th-largest yacht in the world, according to Boat International, a media group that serves the superyacht industry.

VAVA II, the largest privately owned yacht to be built in the United Kingdom, cost $160 million, features a helicopter landing pad, a swimming pool and six decks. It can accommodate 36 guests.

A Washington comparison: The yacht is longer than seven of the 23 Washington State Ferries.

Bertarelli, 48, is a Swiss/Italian pharmaceutical entrepreneur who inherited the biotech company Serono after his father’s death in 1998.

His net worth is $12.2 billion, according to Forbes. His wife, Kirsty Bertarelli, 42, was crowned Miss U.K. in 1988 and is one of Britain’s richest women, according to the Daily Mail.

VAVA II’s recent ports of call were Honolulu and Port Townsend, according to Marine Traffic, a website that tracks maritime vessels’ locations and travels.

The VAVA II went through the Ballard Locks Friday afternoon without any issues, a Locks official said, though onlookers said it did almost hit the side of the chamber a few times.

Though it dwarfs the sailboats and dinghies often seen on Lake Union, the VAVA II isn’t the largest yacht to dock in Seattle waters. That prize likely goes to The Serene, a $330 million yacht owned by Russian vodka distributor Yuri Scheffler, which was moored in Elliott Bay in August 2013. The Serene is about 124 feet longer than the VAVA II.

It’s unclear how long the VAVA II will be in Seattle.

The yacht has a fuel capacity of 115,043 gallons, which provides a maximum range of 5,000 nautical miles at 14 knots.

According to the Daily Mail, refueling costs the billionaires $400,000.

Pocket change, really.

Calypso at 61m had a fast and short stop over at Elliot Bay Marine near downtown Seattle, this is per usual for a lot of superyachts when the run uphill to the Puget Sound, the jog up the Pacific west coast can be a grind, although this time of year late spring and early summer it can be majestic and amazing especially for offshore adventures, wildlife and fishing.

Man arrested for arson after large fire destroys dozens of boats near Ship Canal Bridge

by KOMO News Staff

SEATTLE — Seattle police arrested a man Wednesday afternoon in connection to a massive fire that involved dozens of boats at a boat storage facility near the Ship Canal Bridge and Lake Union early Wednesday morning.

Seattle Fire Department (SFD) Deputy Chief Tom Walsh said more than 100 firefighters responded to the Seattle Boat Company, located on the 700 block of Northeast Northlake Way after reports of the fire started coming in around 2 a.m. Wednesday. When crews arrived, Walsh said thick black smoke was coming from the fire and flames were estimated to be 50-70 feet in the air.

The SFD said crews found a man on one of the boats docked near the fire. The 32-year-old was taken to Harborview Medical Center in stable condition where he was questioned by police. According to the Seattle Police Department, detectives in the Arson Bomb Squad identified the man as a suspect in the fire. Police arrested him for investigation of arson and he will be booked into the King County jail once he is medically cleared.

James Baker, who is the general manager for the Seattle Boat Company, said, "We are very saddened to see this loss for all these families. Very thankful for our responders."

The fire was located just under the Ship Canal Bridge. The SFD tweeted that approximately 30 boats stacked in dry storage were involved in the fire. Walsh initially said at the scene that “up to 42 boats” may have been destroyed in the fire.

Walsh said one other building was involved in the two-alarm fire, but added that the building was able to be saved.

“A lot of challenges with this,” Walsh said. “Every boat has a gas tank, every boat has oil in it, every boat has fiberglass, and you can see that they’re stacked like wood. So, it’s just ripe to get a big fire out of it."

George Rockwell, who knows the family running the business, called the fire "devastating."

"It's just devastating, lucky no life lost, but when you put your heart and soul into a business, summer time around the corner, it's going to be very hard to replace what has happened," said Rockwell.

Crews were able to get the fire under control by 4:30 a.m. No injuries were reported. Northlake Way remained n closed for several hours Wednesday morning.

The SFD, Puget Sound Energy, Seattle City Light, the Department of Ecology and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Firefighters remained at the scene Wednesday monitoring hot spots.
