Hinckley Picnic Boat 40 day boat

Hinckley ’s new Picnic Boat 40, which will be launched next summer, is more than a refresh of the company’s Picnic Boat 37. It’s the latest chapter in a boating revolution that the Maine builder started in 1993 with the first Picnic Boat. The down-east-style cruiser with jet drives and joystick controls captured the imaginations of many yachties who wanted a high-end, highly maneuverable day boat . The Picnic Boat not only created a new category but also attracted admirers from yards as far as Italy and Turkey that created their own versions.

Instead of just upsizing the 37 by three feet, Hinckley took a long, hard look at the Picnic Boat’s design and build processes. “We spoke to customers and many wanted to have a boat they could run by themselves,” says Hinckley ’s Peter Saladino. “That prompted us to redesign the entire flow of the boat. We left the starboard side—from the aft part of the cockpit to the helm station—open so a single captain can use the joysticks to dock the boat himself or herself.”

The designers also included features like an electric sliding window beside the helm and hidden fender holders, so anyone coming to a dock won’t lose time  searching for lines and fenders. The opening door designed into the starboard hull side also operates remotely, a nice feature for times when there are no other hands on deck and the owner wants quick access to the dock. Having lounges on the port side, both in the cockpit and under the hardtop, is also a nice feng-shui solution to separating the social areas from the boat’s travel corridor. It’s a smart design that makes the boat seem larger, too.

The world’s largest Picnic Boat will have Hinckley’s impeccable fit and finish, including the hand-laid teak decks, oak table and bulkheads in the cabin, and wood trim along the exterior edges of the boat. The interior is designed for day boating, with a galley, enclosed bathroom, dining table, and surrounding lounges. It also converts to a weekend cruiser for a couple with the table lowering electrically to form a large V-berth.

One of the hidden innovations on the Picnic Boat 40 will be its construction. Hinckley will combine a Kevlar outer skin, lightweight foam core in the center, and carbon-fiber inner skin. An epoxy resin (as opposed to the vinylester used by most builders) will bond the different elements to create a hull that is lighter and stronger than other boats in its class. “It’s much closer to how a cutting-edge, racing sailboat is built than a traditional powerboat,” says Saladino.

Hinckley has also upgraded its Jetstick III controls by linking the system to GPS, allowing for tighter and more precise maneuvers around the docks. Standard power will be twin 480 hp Cummins diesel engines with Hamilton jet drives, for a top end of 34 knots. The optional 550 hp Cummins engines will push top speed to 38 knots.

Hinckley Yachts 35 Review

  • By Patrick Sciacca
  • March 4, 2022

Hinckley 35

There was a quick, short chop on Long Island Sound near Stamford, Connecticut, on the early fall day I ran the Hinckley 35. It was the kind of chop that could cause a trip to the dentist or possibly rearrange your internal organs—if your ride was not of the sea-slicing variety.

Fortunately, the Hinckley 35 I was aboard runs on a Michael Peters hull form with a fine entry to manage agitated sea states. A moderate transom deadrise, wider-than-average chines and running strakes help with overall stability and lift. And the 35 runs relatively level from its slow cruise to its top hop, aided in part by a longitudinal center of gravity that is right on the numbers set by Peters, according to Scott Bryant, Hinckley vice president of sales and marketing.

Hinckley 35

Additional support comes in the form the 35’s standard Zipwake, a trim system using interceptor blades that are flush-mounted to the hull. The parameters of the boat (such as length, beam and displacement) are entered into Zipwake’s system, and it automatically adjusts trim on the fly. Owners can manually adjust the interceptors too.

This 35-footer has notable speed, thanks in part to a pair of optional 350 hp Mercury outboards. The 35 I got aboard made 40 knots on the pins running at 6,000 rpm with a full load of fuel and a half-tank of water. This thoroughbred-level gallop burns 60 gallons per hour. At top speed—and considering a 10 percent fuel reserve—range is about 180 nautical miles. At 4,000 rpm and a 24-knot cruise speed, fuel burn plummets to 23.5 gph and range jumps to 276 nautical miles.

It’s admirable performance when you consider that those engines are pushing a boat displacing 13,174 pounds. Hinckley also offers Yamaha outboards, and the 35’s standard engines are twin 300s, from either Mercury or Yamaha. At press time, Hinckley had sold 15 hulls, and all the owners had picked the bigger engines, Bryant says.

Hinckley 35

I found the single-lever Mercury throttles smooth and the engines instantly responsive. The boat gets up and goes in a hurry. It’s an agile vessel that runs true with a moderate inboard heel on hard-over turns.

Sightlines are clear in all directions and made even better with the single-pane ClearView windshield. Sitting in the high-gloss teak ladder-back helm seat looking out to the water, I felt no barrier between inside and outside.

Side windows open to let in breezes on fair-weather days, and hatches over the helm and companion seat open as well. Those hatches also automatically close and lock into place.

Hinckley 35

In addition to the helm seats, there are two J-shaped settees abaft the helm for four or so guests and elements-free cruising. The cockpit seating includes two seats forward to port and starboard, as well as a settee along the transom to catch some rays underway. There is stowage under all the seating.

Supporting the vessel’s performance and helping to create comfort underway is robust, tech-savvy construction. The 35 is built end-to-end with vacuum-infused carbon-fiber composites and epoxy resin. An integrated interior structure is infused with the hull adding rigidity. The hull is then post-cured in an 80-foot oven, further strengthening the structure. Illustrating its faith in its build process, Hinckley offers a lifetime warranty on its hulls to the boat’s original owner.

The Hinckley 35’s powerplants and build materials may be throughly modern, but this vessel’s lines have a timelessness about them. The 35’s proud bow addresses the ocean, and the profile sweeps down and aft, gently carrying the freeboard lower as it descends toward the cockpit. The effect is one of flow. High-gloss teak toerails accent the lines and this transition—defining it.

Hinckley 35

A trunk cabin harks back to the days when Down East design was boatbuilding, yet it offers some rake forward, adding shape that follows the profile while adding headroom belowdecks. That single-pane windshield is also raked, enhancing the profile even more.

A mirrorlike blue hull quietly states sophistication, as do the high-gloss teak accents abovedecks and the additional gloss teak and satin finishes belowdecks. A teak-and-holly sole in the cabin puts a fine point on the ambience of tradition.

Hinckley has decided that its boat is so complete, the builder needs to offer 35 owners just three options: a Seakeeper gyrostabilizer, engine upgrades and teak decks.

Hinckley 35

Another piece of the ownership puzzle Hinckley has figured out is offering owners personalized, concierge-level service. Called YachtCare, the program lets owners tell Hinckley where they want their boat and when, and the company will have a captain deliver the boat to any dock an owner wishes. Additionally, the builder has 10 service locations along the East Coast, so if an owner is on a cruise and has an issue, there’s a service center not too far away. Owners also get a dedicated manager for their vessel; haul-out and climate-controlled offseason storage; a 24/7 hotline; preseason commissioning and launch; and more.

When you consider that the Hinckley 35 is a design that should stay in vogue for the long haul, has performance to satisfy anyone with a need for speed, and has finish work where you can see your reflection at every turn, it’s not surprising that the boat has found early fans. If past is prologue, this is only the beginning of the Hinckley 35’s story.

See Everything

Stepping aboard the Hinckley 35, the first thing I noticed was that I could see straight past the helm and across the water, as if there was no glass in the boat. It was like being outside. The house-spanning, single-pane windshield is called ClearView. Even looking deep into the upper and lower corners of the glass, I couldn’t find any distortion or warping.

Easier Docking

When it comes to close-quarters moves on the Hinckley 35, there are options. The boat comes with a Side-Power bow thruster, so a skipper could adjust the engines and thruster to maneuver into a slip like we did. There is also a joystick, offering the helmsman fingertip control if that is preferred.

Cozy Accommodations

While primarily a dayboat, the Hinckley 35 has a cabin with a V-berth forward. A filler cushion creates real estate for a couple for weekend voyages or longer cruises. Headroom belowdecks averages around 5 feet, 11 inches. A galley is abaft the berth to port and has a single-burner Kenyon electric cooktop, a sink and a GE microwave. The head is directly across from the galley. All in all, the Hinckley 35 is a perfect pocket cruiser .

2022 Hinckley 35

  • By Pete McDonald
  • January 12, 2022

Hinckley 35 at sunset

I’ve often heard musicians describe how they can immediately recognize other great musicians in a song. Guitarists can pick out someone by tone, and drummers can tell by feel, for example. And I get how that works because some boat brands are distinguishable by their lines, whether you’re staring at them at the fuel dock or gazing upon them from a considerable distance. Hinckley is one of those brands—you see one and you instantly know. At first glance, the new Hinckley 35 falls right into this; with its beautiful teak trim, immaculate paint job and transom tumblehome, it matches the classic Downeast Picnic Boat motif for which Hinckley is famous. But then, what to do about the outboards?

Hinckley 35 idling

That’s right. For its new 35, Hinckley eschewed its customary jet propulsion in favor of a pair of Mercury or Yamaha outboards on the transom. Even though it looks the same, in a way this changes everything. In fact, Hinckley prefers that you don’t even call it a Picnic Boat. The 35 has been designed by famed marine architect Michael Peters from the ground up to run with outboard power. It might look similar, but it’s a new class of Hinckley unto itself. To maximize the outboard power, Peters optimized the design of the chines and strakes to provide more lift for getting out of the hole, as well as more stability underway. The deadrise tapers to 19 degrees at the transom. On a sunny fall morning with calm seas, we put the Hinckley 35 through our battery of performance benchmarks, and the boat held up well, carving graceful, inboard-leaning turns with no propeller slippage as we cut the wheel at 30 mph. We hit a top speed of 47.4 mph at 6,000 rpm, a solid speed for a 35-foot dayboat. Though the seas were calm, we found some boat wakes to crisscross and simulate following, quartering and head seas, and we met each manufactured sea state with nary a shudder nor rattle. The standard Zipwake interceptor system automatically adjusts the boat to the optimal running attitude. Dial back to 4,000 rpm, and you can cruise at over 30 mph for over 400 statute miles (see our performance data). When you pull into the marina, the standard joystick system and bow thruster take away all the angst of docking and close-quarters handling.

Hinckley 35 salon

Part of the new 35’s seakeeping can be attributed to the construction techniques used aboard all Hinckley boats. Every Hinckley hull is built via the resin-infusion process that incorporates carbon and epoxy, and cures in an 80-foot-long oven in Maine. It’s just a solidly built boat. The Clearview single-pane glass windshield gives this boat incredible visibility from the pilothouse, whether you’re manning the helm or keeping watch from the matching passenger’s chair. The hardtop extends over the U-shaped seating in the cockpit. A centerline walk-through leads to the open aft cockpit, with rear-facing love seats to each side and aligned along the transom to port. Access to the swim steps and outboard well is through a starboard transom door. One of my favorite features on the boat resides below the cockpit sole: a massive stowage locker that can swallow up gear, cruising provisions, and even bikes to use at the overnight marina. The electric hatch lifts on beefy gas-assisted struts at the push of a button for easy access to all your stuff.

Hinckley 35 cockpit access

Interior and Accessories

At the helm, a louvered wood door with a hatch to port of the wheel leads belowdecks to a well-appointed cabin, with a full galley to port, an enclosed head to starboard, and a forward V-berth.

The list of amenities aboard the Hinckley 35 is a long one and, what’s more, almost every item is standard. In fact, the only options offered on this boat are a power upgrade from 300 to 350 hp outboards, a Seakeeper 3 gyrostabilizer, and the full teak decks. (If I were signing the check, I’d likely opt for all three.)

Hinckley 35 helm

Since it’s not really a Picnic Boat, I’ll avoid comparing the Hinckley 35 to the usual list of suspects in the New England lobster realm, with the exception of the MJM 35z (starting at $768,132 with twin Mercury 300s), another outboard-powered Downeast-style boat. I’d also suggest thinking outside the box and looking at the Chris-Craft Calypso 35 (starting at $644,633 with triple Mercury 300s), a center-console pilothouse design with an open bow. Neither is a perfect comparison.

Even though there are other boats out there that are worth a look, there is still no other boat that looks like this one on the water. To go back to the music analogy, the new Hinckley 35 is playing a tune all its own.

The History of Hinckley Yachts Chronicled in a Lush New Monograph

Image may contain Transportation Vehicle Boat Vessel Watercraft Sailboat and Yacht

Anybody who has sailed Eggemoggin Reach in Maine’s Penobscot Bay or sat at Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse to watch boats come into Portland Harbor knows the excitement of spotting a Hinckley yacht. It is a point of pride for native, as well as aspiring, Mainers that these beautiful crafts are still made in Southwest Harbor, where the company was founded in 1928. But Hinckley’s appeal reaches far wider than a single state. The boatbuilder’s exceptionally well designed and technically advanced vessels are sought after around the world by racers and recreational sailors alike.

Nick Voulgaris III, author of the new book Hinckley Yachts: An American Icon ( Rizzoli , $65), purchased a 1968 Hinckley Bermuda 40 yawl in 2006 and embarked on a stem-to-stern restoration. In the process of taking apart his boat, he became obsessed with the firm that designed it. Established by Henry R. Hinckley, whose family owned a summer house on Mt. Desert Island, the company started out making motorboats and then added sailing models in 1938.

Image may contain Vehicle Transportation Yacht and Boat

The Hinckley Co. expanded quickly during World War II, building various watercrafts for the war effort, and then resumed production of recreational vessels in the late 1940s. Voulgaris has unearthed many photographs and documents about the firm’s early years and used them to piece together an illuminating narrative about the evolution of an important American brand. For nautical newcomers, the volume offers a primer on the world of fine boatbuilding; for aficionados, it provides fascinating details about Hinckley’s many technological advances, races won, and extraordinary track record making new models that become instant sensations.

Image may contain Human Person Water Nature and Outdoors

Voulgaris enlisted some well-known Hinckley owners to contribute essays to the book, including banker and philanthropist David Rockefeller (his most recent Hinckley is a Talaria 55), Condé Nast CEO Chuck Townsend (who owns a 36 Picnic Boat), and magazine publisher and TV personality Martha Stewart (who also has a 36 Picnic Boat). Each expresses admiration for Hinckley boats and for the skill and ingenuity of the craftspeople who make them. It’s a common refrain, writes Voulgaris. Even though the company has only produced around 2,500 vessels in its 85-year history, the boats attract outsize devotion. As he notes, “Hinckley owners often refer to themselves as ‘stewards’ of these fine craft, preserving them for the next individual to hold the proverbial keys.”

Smart Mode Selection®️ automatically selects between helm steering and JetStick modes, allowing you to focus on your surroundings and loved ones instead of buttons on a panel. Heading Hold®️ derives a linear course in a variety of conditions, at any speed, while Dock Hold maintains the position at a dock so you can leave the helm and secure lines.

With nine (9) service locations up and down the eastern seaboard, which offer concierge support and variety of services, Picnic Boat 39 customers will join an exclusive family of Hinckley owners that enjoy an ownership experience unlike any other. Hinckley's service locations are full-service operations for all makes and models of Hinckley and other manufacturers. This unique offering makes Hinckley the only boat manufacturer to offer service to other brands and, as a result, is the largest individual network of service by a boat company.

About The Hinckley Company:

Hinckley has been building and caring for America's finest yachts since 1928. Founded to build and care for the boats of the local lobstermen in Southwest Harbor, Maine, Hinckley quickly developed a reputation for unsurpassed quality and innovation. The years that followed saw the company building true classics of American yachting from the Bermuda 40 to the Picnic Boat. Today, Hinckley builds carbon/epoxy powerboats from 35 to 57 feet and supports its owners and other yachtsmen with its network of service yards from Maine to Florida. Somes Boats

Acadia mountain rises up from somes sound behind us, and we’re aboard a hinckley. these coveted yachts are still built by hand a few miles away, known for their iconic curves, polish, and posture..

W hat I know when I start driving toward Mount Desert Island on a sunny day earlier this summer is that Hinckley Yachts are beautiful, and prized. A boat captain friend back in South Carolina happens to call while I’m on the way, and  he actually gasps when I mention that I’ll  be visiting the Hinckley boatyard. “Wow, wow, wow,” he repeats. “To have one of those beauties would be my dream.”

I can remember hearing the buzz about Hinckley when Martha Stewart commissioned the Southwest Harbor- founded company to build one of its famous “picnic boats” for her, and she had them paint the hull an exclusive-to-her color that’s a heathery soft green. (The yacht’s name is Skylands II , after her cottage, up high in Seal Harbor.) But I’ve never gotten nearer to a Hinckley than to see the gleaming, million- dollar yachts in pictures or when passing through harbors. I’m ready.

HARBORSIDE START

Steam’s rising from the lobster pots at Lunt’s, and there’s a lineup of private planes at the Bar Harbor airport when I turn into the industrial park just across from the runways. Phil Bennett, one of the Hinckley Company’s vice presidents, is meeting me here, at the hangar-sized warehouses that make up Hinckley’s boatbuilding headquarters. The Hinckley Company got its start nearly 90 years ago on the shores of Southwest Harbor when engineer Henry Hinckley’s father bought a small boatyard facing directly into the mouth of Somes Sound. In the 1930s Hinckley built luxury pleasure boats with the swooping, curved features of the grand automobiles of the day, and by the 1950s the company was pioneering the use of fiberglass in boatbuilding for its powerboats and sailing yachts. Bennett compares Hinckley boatbuilding acumen to “something like watchmaking in Switzerland.”

On MDI, the Hinckley Company still operates a service yard at the original site of its founding in Southwest Harbor. (With the Hinckley Company’s acquisition of Morris Yachts in 2016, it added the sailboat builder’s service yard in Northeast Harbor, too.) But it’s the Trenton facility that’s home to the real “toy shop” now, Bennett explains as he shows me around the former woodland property near the bridge to MDI. “This is where every Hinckley begins.”

A dapper dresser in yachtsman style, Bennett is a longtimer at Hinckley and in the boat world generally. His grandfather was a boat maker, and Bennett himself decided to move to Maine and join Hinckley after first getting to know the company while visiting to sell Hood sails back in the 1970s. “Most people know that a Hinckley is expensive and shiny, but they may not fully know why,” Bennett says of the yachts that typically take a year or more to build and customize for each owner. “They haven’t yet seen what goes into making them.”

IN THE WORKSHOP

The smell of wet epoxy resin is like a wasabi jolt.

We’ve entered the fiberglass shop, a garage- style building arrayed with elephant-sized boat hulls inside even larger molds. Vacuum fans whir and rumble, and at least a dozen men are working among the raw boat shapes and spools of silken-looking fiberglass cloth.

From a lobstering family, Barry Archilles started at Hinckley about 40 years ago and figures he’s helped build about 1,000 boats. He’s seen the fiberglass processes develop and improve to be lighter, thinner, and stronger, he says. “It’s a lot more technical now.”

“Years ago, all you would do is build layers of fiberglass,” he says, and the result was rugged, heavy construction that was about 65 percent resin. Now Hinckley uses techniques similar to those used to build airplanes, Archilles says, so that a hull is about 65 percent fiber and only 35 percent resin. That’s where the technical know-how comes in—this is composite construction that makes use of super-strong materials like Kevlar and carbon fiber, lightweight core and resin infusion processes, and engineered laminates.

Archilles is explaining all of this in his downeast accent and with the fervor of  telling great sea stories. When an owner bumped a rock ledge recently while out on his new yacht, Archilles hurried down to  the boatyard to take a look. “That boat was  in the water for about two weeks afterward, because the man didn’t want to tell anyone at first.” Since Archilles had helped to build the yacht, he was curious to see how it had fared after the accident. “I was excited to see for myself and make the repair,” he says, “and do you know what? It never leaked in all that time. The rock had punctured all the way into the core, but the water didn’t migrate.”

That means the high-level finishes in the cabins and on deck were just fine. Hinckleys are known for well-varnished wood cabinetry and trim: teak with a  swirling grain, rich-toned mahogany, and American cherry, tulip, and red cedar. Bow-front drawers and other curved details are throughout, and even the toe rails are shaped into a tapered curve. We soon meet Ronnie Nelson, another Hinckley longtimer who started in the yard about four decades ago. Bennett says Nelson is known as a magician when it comes to carpentry. Quiet and busy, Nelson is sanding long, serpentine cherry rails when I stop by his workbench. Barry Buchanan is nearby, inspecting the woodwork of a finished console. He says he came to Mount Desert Island specifically  to build wooden boats, and notes that a Hinckley has so many wooden features, it’s often thought of as a wooden boat inside of fiberglass. “It’s one thing to build a table,” he says. “But it’s another to build a boat that goes somewhere. I like that movement.”

THE WOW FACTOR

To see more, we continue walking through the hive-like action and industry in all corners at Hinckley on this early summer’s  day when many of the tall bay doors are open. On an upper level above the carpentry floor, Carlando Grant is focused on one thing: carefully brushing on coats of varnish by hand—10 to 15 coats onto cabinet doors and other wooden pieces of each yacht’s interior. Born in Jamaica, Grant moved to Maine  to go to college to study engineering and to work. But first, he took a job with FedEx. One day he brought a delivery to Hinckley and saw the Talaria 55 Motoryacht being built here (the largest of Hinckley yachts), and he applied for a job immediately. That was over three years ago. He still daydreams about a Hinckley of his own, but for now he and his wife own a 21-foot Bayliner to which he’s been adding wooden touches. “I’m a perfectionist,” he says. “I want you to look at a piece that I’ve varnished and say, ‘Wow!’”

Close to 300 men and women work in the Hinckley Company’s boatbuilding yards here in Trenton and another 85 or so work at the service yards on MDI; that includes the crew at the sailboat-focused Morris Yachts across Route 3, another formidable yacht builder on MDI that was begun in the 1970s and that Hinckley acquired in 2016. Since the purchase by Hinckley, Morris Yachts is still operating much as it has, with its name on new boats and the boatyard at Northeast Harbor.

It’s Friday afternoon, and some of the Morris Yachts crew have left by the time we call out   a “hello” to someone on a narrow, deck-style platform built around a 42-foot sailing yacht that’s underway. Up there is Ian Ashley, a formal residential carpenter who invites us to climb the temporary stairs and take a look at the deck up close. Once up on  scaffolding, Ashley tells me he came to work  at Morris about four years ago and “fell  in love with building boats.” This one he’s  finishing has an extra-long keel for racing,  and it almost looks like the yacht’s in graceful  motion, even as it’s securely parked upright  and steady in a wooden frame.

Throughout the day of taking in all the sights and sounds, I keep noticing that the carpenters and craftspeople are working on different parts of the same boat at the same time —the hull might still be in the mold in  the fiberglass shop, while carpenters are already constructing the bunks and galley  spaces. Bennett explains that’s possible because everyone’s following precise design and engineering plans that were generated for each boat. In a small office of computers with big screens he introduces me to nautical engineer Peter Smith, who has also been with Hinckley for decades. Smith is part of the team that works out each boat’s design and engineering particulars, including figuring out how and where to incorporate features  that a boat buyer dreams up. Those options  have included pull-down cabinets for wine  storage, retractable deck awnings, bait wells,  Italian espresso makers, and disappearing screens. He says they even once designed a compartment lined with a mink pelt, creating a new use for the vintage mink from a client’s fur coat.

A YACHT’S DAY

Finally, we’ll get out on the water. At the  shop earlier in the day, we’d seen a gorgeous blue-painted motor yacht with a Swedish  homeport painted on the stern. A Talaria 43,  the boat will be shipped to its owner soon,  so it’s going through another sea trial first  to check its systems and performance. In  mirrored sunglasses and a t-shirt, Shane  Dowsland is the man for the job. He must have the coolest gig in the harbor.

Dowsland is a licensed captain who was a  deckhand on a schooner based in Bar Harbor  and then worked in the boatyard for Morris  Yachts before landing the sea trial job. Now  he tests the new boats before delivery. Shoes  off and on-deck, we join him for a couple of  sea trials departing from Southwest Harbor.

It’s my first time on a boat that moves by  water-jet propulsion, and immediately I feel  the airplane-like stability—even at 30 knots  and higher. We’re in a smooth glide as we  cruise past Beal’s Lobster Pier and the Coast  Guard field office in Southwest Harbor. The  docks and moorings at the Hinckley yard  are flotillas of Hinckley and Morris yachts  this time of year. In a quick glance, I count  more than a dozen picnic boats that I’m  finding easily recognizable since seeing them  crafted up close—the highly varnished, teak- trimmed, well-upholstered takes on classic  lobster boats, often with million-dollar-plus prices.

We thread through the moorings and pass several lobster boats, too. It’s like an informal  water tour of Maine boating. At one point, Dowsland points out another classic boat, a 40-foot Friendship sloop, and mentions that he has one like it. Originally from upstate New York, he married a local woman and says he knows most of the local lobstermen. And the lobstering crowd doesn’t mind seeing a Hinckley pass near their trap buoys, he notes, because the jetboats don’t have exterior propellers that might damage the buoy lines. Plus, he says, “They know these aren’t just rich, plastic boats. They know the local craftsmanship that goes into every one.”

When we motor into Valley Cove, where the seaside mountains of Acadia National Park  create a vertical wall of rock and trees that rises straight from the deep water, I step  out from the comforts of this brand-new Hinckley yacht’s cabin that’s all windows and wood paneling and soft, couch-like seating— and I look across the teak and holly lines toward the bow and feel the rush and cool  of the early summer air. So, I think in those moments on the water, this is what yacht dreams are made of.

The Hinckley Company’s roots are deep in soil of Maine boatbuilding. The company, founded in 1928 to build and care for the boats of the local lobstermen, has been in continuous operation building such classics as the Bermuda 40 and the Picnic Boat. Henry Hinckley set the course with the Bermuda 40 in the early 1960s when he crafted her stunning lines out of a radical, new material, fiberglass. This combination of elegant form, material innovation and brilliant attention to finishing detail set the course Hinckley has been on ever since in the pleasure boat business.

Today, Hinckley builds Jetboats and sailboats from 29 to 55 feet and supports its owners and other yachtsmen with its network of service yards from Maine to Florida. Two other distinguished boat builders, Hunt Yachts and Morris Yachts, were acquired in 2013 and 2016 respectively.

Vicem Yachts Vintage Line is built using the cold-molding process. A construction technique which embodies all the construction methods of the Turkish historical marine tradition; a modern procedure different from traditional boat building. Based on engineered wood construction, cold-molding uses laminated mahogany and a specific formulated epoxy resin to create the hull, decks and principal superstructures. This results in a strong vessel with a smooth ride, and natural insulation from humidity and noise.

The largest yachts to have ever attended the Monaco Yacht Show

The Monaco Yacht Show is the most highly anticipated event of the Mediterranean season. But this year has generated even more excitement than usual, with a series of impressive milestones reached. The biggest superyacht in the show's history – the 122-metre Kismet – will be in attendance, alongside the largest number of 100-metre-plus yachts overall with the arrival of the 111.9-metre Renaissance and 105.3-metre H3 .

To honour this record-breaking edition, BOAT looks back at the Monaco Yacht Show's largest attendees...

Which show?

This year's Monaco Yacht Show will be a record-breaker with Lürssen 's mighty Kismet in attendance. An immense volume of 4,918GT houses a mosaic-line pool with a 40-tonne capacity, two spa pools, a certified helipad, fireplaces inside and out, a full-service spa, a lift and a gym. To say nothing of her intricate paint and marble detailing or the stainless-steel jaguar bow figure. It's no wonder Pascale Reymond, co-founder of Reymond Langton studio, has billed her a "cathedral of design".

Kismet also represents a first for the German shipyard with her underwater lounge and cinema, featuring extra-large windows (1.1 metres by 2.8 metres) that dip under the waterline. She follows a 95.2-metre World Superyacht Awards winner, now known as Whisper .

Another Lürssen, Ahpo was named after a term of endearment meaning grandmother. And her design certainly centres around the family, including two identical bedrooms with different colour schemes, designed for the original owner's twin girls. Wellness is another major focus, with a nature-themed spa, massage room, beauty salon and private owner's gym outfitted in red-lacquer furniture and custom dumbbells.

Other highlights include a mosaic bathroom modelled after the work of Gustav Klimt, a 12-seat cinema and an aft deck winter garden. There are quarters for up to 53 crew, including two helicopter pilots.

Renaissance

Renaissance was built by Spanish yard Freire and created by the legendary Jon Bannenberg , though for 40 years the design never left the drawing board. The owners turned to his son at Bannenberg & Rowell Design when it came time to build it and provided a long list of non-negotiables, including a large gym, high ceilings, lots of places to eat and a very large beach club. The brief was certainly fulfilled with a double-height formal dining room, a sushi bar and a deck entirely dedicated to wellness, including the aforementioned gym, a sauna, a ballet bar and a dedicated hair and beauty salon.

Accommodation is across 19 cabins, including an owner's deck with a 60-square-metre suite, a media room and a lounge with bar and dining. A private terrace with sunloungers and a Jacuzzi for six can be found forward.

Alaiya (then Tis ) was styled inside and out by British studio  Winch Design  and was commissioned by a long-time (read: seven year) charter client of Moran Yacht & Ship . The superyacht houses two helicopter pads, a 12-metre swimming pool, a private owner's deck and a "resort-inspired" spa across her 4,699GT interiors. Her tender garage can also accommodate two 13-metre tenders and a variety of water toys.

Accommodation is for 18 guests across nine cabins, with further quarters for 38 crew. Alaiya was sold following her appearance at the show and then underwent an extensive, seven-month refit with Blohm & Voss .

Kaos (then Jubilee ) is one of the most recognisable yachts on the water with a long, lean, metallic blue exterior by Igor Lobanov . The Oceanco looks surprisingly lithe for her immense size, attributed to the clever troupe l'oil effect design that gives the appearance of additional decks and so conceals her actual height. Interior details have been kept largely under wraps but at the time of her delivery, it was said that Kaos had the most marble and stone outfitted within the interior than any other superyacht.

The yacht is also known for her swimming pool, positioned on the largest of the four decks and peering into an aquarium in the beach club below. She was one of the most travelled superyachts of 2023 thanks to a mammoth transatlantic passage that began in St Barths for the New Year's celebrations and ended in the River Thames, London.

A Benetti creation, IJE is the flagship of the Italian shipyard's fleet and a full-custom project to boot. British studio RWD is responsible for the exterior and interior design, which is meant to capture "the soul of an explorer" in a polished superyacht package.

As a result, IJE was kitted out with three large tenders, eight Jet Skis, comfortable guest and crew cabins for long stints in remote areas, as well as an owner's deck, a nightclub, a cinema, a gym and a beach club. She is also reportedly equipped with the largest single-point lift crane installed on a yacht. The superyacht edges out previous flagships Luminosity and Lana by only a few centimetres.

Amadea took just 31 months to complete from the first steel cutting, which was quite the feat for a vessel of her size. Exterior design is by Espen Øino International , while interiors were styled by Francois Zuretti . Her highlights include a 4D cinema with popcorn machine, a hand-painted Pleyel piano and a spa pool and sunpad set up that can convert into a live stage with built-in speakers, stage lights and laser beams. The owner’s cabin also has a private terrace complete with a mosaic-lined pool.

The superyacht was arrested in May 2022 after her UBO (ultimate beneficiary owner) was allegedly sanctioned following the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

She may not have the (literal) edge over Kismet this year, but H3 is a record-breaker in her own right as the current world's most expensive yacht for sale . The superyacht is asking an eye-watering €295,000,000 with Edmiston and earns the bill, outfitted with a piano previously owned by Elton John – the one on which he wrote the album Songs from the West Coast – a large pool with a waterfall feature, a huge spa and wellness area with a nail salon and a climate-controlled winter garden in the owner's suite.

Her three-year rebuild, beginning in 2020, won her international acclaim and a World Superyacht Award . Virtually nothing was left from her previous life as Indian Empress except the hull, which had also been extended a further 10 metres. BOAT International was provided an exclusive look inside her rebuild last year.

Monaco Yacht Show 2024: The Biggest, Boldest and Most Expensive Superyachts To See

Even in its 33rd year, Monaco Yacht Show continues to break its own milestones.

By Ellys Woodhouse and Toby Louch

The principality of Monaco has a calendar that’s filled with major events. While the financial benefits of this little tax haven ensure its population remains fairly well stocked with super-rich and socialites year-round, it’s these events that truly bring the masses. April calls for the tennis at The Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters; in May it’s time for the Formula One Grand Prix ; June brings the world-famous car show Top Marques ; and summer draws to a close with perhaps the most glam of the bunch, the Monaco Yacht Show, which this year falls on September 25 – 28.

For those interested in gazing upon some of the finest yachts that can be found anywhere in the world, Monaco ’s Port Hercules is a pretty good spot year-round, but for the weekend of the Monaco Yacht Show, things enter a different league.

The Monaco Yacht Show is essentially a gathering of the global superyacht community. From owners to innovators, manufacturers and brokers, all head to the principality. Each year, builders and brokers present around 120 superyachts and 60 luxury tenders , with many of these reflecting current industry trends and revealing the potential future direction of the industry. These vessels boast an average length of around 160 ft, with a sprinkling of superyachts that top the 320 ft mark – with this year’s headliner clocking in at 400 ft.

Aside from the yachts themselves, visitors can expect countless designers improving yacht interiors and engineers working to ensure the industry becomes more sustainable. There’s sure to be a lot going on.

So ahead of this year’s event, Elite Traveler has looked into which yachts will be on display at Port Hercules and curated a list of some of the show’s unmissable vessels. So blow the dust off your Panama hat and add a few zeros to your credit card limit, because these are some of the biggest, boldest and most expensive boats attending the 2024 Monaco Yacht Show.

The undisputed biggest headline of this year’s show – in every sense of the word – Lürssen’s Kismet will be the largest yacht to go on display in Port Hercules. While the previous title holder was another from Lürssen, the 377.6-ft Ahpo, the Kismet takes its victory by a considerable mile, clocking in at 400 ft. Previously known as Project Jag, the Kisamet was handed over to owner Shahid Khan in May 2024, making it one of the show’s newest deliveries, too.

With exterior design by Nuvolari Lenard and naval architecture by Lürssen Yachts along with Reymond Langton Design working on the yacht’s interiors , Kismet is decked out with a helipad, beauty salon, indoor and outdoor cinema, dance floor and gym. Perhaps unsurprising, but all this makes Kisamet one of the most expensive yachts to charter , too, asking for €3m (approx. $3.4m) per week with Cecil Wright & Partners.

Delivered in 2019 by SilverYachts and refitted in 2024, the almost 280-ft, self-described ‘sports activity vessel’ Bold takes center stage at Monaco Yacht Show 2024. Designers Espen Øino created the superyacht’s striking, military-inspired exterior, creating a unique glass-enclosed loft on the upper deck that covers over 3,200 sq-ft of interior space. Meanwhile, Vain Interiors has created an opulent, New York-style loft, which is built to accommodate up to 12 overnight guests in eight luxurious staterooms and can carry up to 96 passengers while cruising.

With a a huge selection of water toys, a vast outdoor entertaining area with a bar and Teppanyaki grill, a cinema, an eight-person hot tub and a lounge surrounding a firepit, it’s no surprise that the Bold is a popular charter yacht, with Holl Robinson asking €875,000 ($972, 800) per week.

Following an extensive, three-year rebuild, the most expensive superyacht on the market has returned to Port Hercules for 2024, complete with a new look – and price tag, too, asking for €295m ($328m). The 344.5-ft Oceanco H3 superyacht has already picked up a handful of international awards for the new look and is expected to impress many fans at Monaco Yacht Show 2024.

In addition to the extra 10 meters that were added to the H3 ’s hull, the rebuild – from the likes of Reymond Langton Design, which worked on both the exterior and interior redesign, and the collaboration between Lateral Naval Architects and Oceanco on its naval architecture – also saw a pool deck, huge spa and wellness area and climate-controlled winter garden added to H3 ’s numerous amenities.

With its distinctive, shark-like exterior design, the 295-ft superyacht DAR will be hard not to miss at Monaco Yacht Show 2024. Built by Oceanco with exteriors designed by Luiz de Basto Design, the glossy black silhouette was inspired by the look of the hammerhead shark, with sinuous lines, wide set wing stations and a mast modeled after a dorsal fin.

Meanwhile, renowned Italy-based studio Nuvolari & Lenard has crafted swooping, contemporary interiors. DAR’s impressive features include a complete owner’s deck, complete with a private salon and jacuzzi, a wellness area, an impressive beach club, and two helipads for private use. Offering grandeur and complete privacy in equal doses, DAR can accommodate up to 14 guests in overnight accommodation, with separate living quarters to host as many as 31 crew members.

Despite only hitting the waters in June this year, the first wallywind110, Galma , is set to make its global debut at Monaco Yacht Show 2024. Measuring almost 110 ft, Galma ’s naval architecture comes from German studio judel/vrolijk & co while interior and exterior lines are designed by Wally in collaboration with Santa Maria Magnolfi. With a design that offers the comfort of a cruising yacht while maintaining the performance of a racing boat, Galma is characterized by the 22.6-ft telescopic keel and an all-carbon hull that has been painted in light metallic blue.

Other highlights of Galma include an 860-sq-ft full-beam cockpit with seating and dining for up to 15 people, as well as an open-plan raised saloon. Galma can accommodate up to eight guests overnight, with five crew members.
