Raising the sails at the Yottie

noosa yacht club sailing lessons

Covid may have delayed the 25th anniversary of its current clubhouse by a couple of years, but the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club will have plenty to celebrate on its open day, coming up in August.

For starters, there’s the remarkable amount of $220,000 raised in financial year 2021 in support of the club’s YouthSail, Rowing and Sailability programs.

This was a massive boost to these valuable programs helping disabled people of all ages and schoolkids to learn to row and sail.

As a result of the funding, the Stratus 580 trailer sailor, a multi-purpose vehicle used for adult sailing lessons, Sailability and the schools’ programs, has been upgraded. Four new vagabond sailing dinghies for the schools’ learn to sail programs, and two new RIBs (rigid inflatable boats) were purchased to ensure maximum safety on the water, and a new motor has been upgraded to the Rescue 1 boat.

Safety being a priority, additional handheld radios were acquired for communication on the river, while to ensure ease of access for the Sailability program, the beach wheel chair has also been refurbished.

Back in the 1950s a small group of dedicated sailors were unknowingly laying the foundations for what is now the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club.

Then known as the Noosa River Sailing Club, their first clubhouse, near the existing tennis courts on Gympie Terrace, was opened in September 1961.

As numbers grew, the clubhouse was extended and the name changed to the Noosa Yacht Club. At the same time, rowers were becoming big users of the Noosa River, with their storage at Munna Point.

In 1981 the Noosa Rowing Club was formed and in 1984, agreement was reached and the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club was incorporated.

Don Reed, an original of the Noosa River Sailing Club, and Dr. Nick Kahl of Noosa Rowing Club, along with Simon Newcomb and Billy Griffiths, secured the river site which was to become the current club site.

On Easter Saturday 1994, the sailors and rowers sailed past the old clubhouse to the new clubhouse and, ever since, the club has grown in size and membership.

Seven local schools now participate in the Schools Program, with over 3000 attendances.

Hats off to the Year 7s at Noosa Pengari Steiner School as they also attend a learn to sail program each year which enables them to embark on a week-long self-catered sailing camp around Moreton Bay – the experience of a lifetime.

The Stratogen Accountants Sunshine Coast Inter-Schools Regatta is hosted every year with both primary and secondary divisions competing in a round robin format over two days. On average 18 teams compete for the trophy. The regatta is currently in its 12th year.

Four rescue craft and 37 training boats now make up the fleet in our sailing programs.

The holiday programs, including FunSail and Learn To Sail for seven–17 year-olds, provide vital first steps in the sailing journey. Participants gain valuable life skills and confidence on the water.

Many of these participants go on to compete in regional, state or national programs.

Sailability provides people with disability, young and old, the freedom of sailing the idyllic Noosa River. Instructors and volunteers crew the dinghies and safety boats to maintain a safe environment. The Sailability program is celebrating 10 years and is run every Thursday (excluding school holidays) during March to September.

With the rise of Covid cases in Queensland, rowing memberships noticeably increased, with people turning to the incredible health benefits that rowing provides.

The club boasts a thriving master rowers division, achieving state and national titles over the years.

Rowers can develop valuable life skills, goal setting and a sense of belonging while developing new friendships.

Whether you are looking for a social, competitive or accepting involvement in sport at all levels, The Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club is breeding success.

FOOTNOTE: Back in 2020 a group was trying to organise defibrillators to be placed all along the Noosa River for public use. This unfortunately never came to fruition, so the Yottie decided to go it alone and install one from its own funding. The defib is located outside the sailing office near the notice board, and it’s for public use.

Big bill for open day

Sneak peak delights crowds, funny-flick perfect choice for charity event, bar raised for top camp spot.

They managed the full trifecta -- AWFUL FOOD, AWFUL SERVICE and AWFUL STAFF. Been here several times as a member and it was fine. But this time my $47.50 eye fillet and mash was cold (hardly even warm) when it arrived at the table - one mouthful and that was it. So I took it back and the young lady was most polite and agreed to replace it with a curry. Next thing the chef comes out and starts abusing me saying that no way it was cold, he knew it was hot! Despite me protesting that my wife had tasted it and agreed it was totally cold. I then requested my money back which the young lady politely did. But then the belligerent barman came over and proceeded to demand what was going on and was threatening and completely unprofessional. Subsequently I heard from a local friend that this guy has a reputation for being obnoxious and unprofessional. Never again.

We have been here pre-Covid but lots has changed. Met parents here for a Sunday lunch and had a great time. When I booked online,(everywhere should do online bookings!) I requested a table near the water. Had a lovely quiet spot near the water with good views of the river. The staff were helpful, the food was fairly quick and delicious. I ordered the pork belly poke bowl and was beautiful. My dad ordered the spaghetti marinara and said it was the best he has had. Thoroughly enjoyed the meal and the service. Couldn't quite commit to 5 stars as it wasn't a 5 star place but well worth it. Good prices too!

Had quite an unsatisfactory experience here today. Hubby and I went out for a belated, casual anniversary lunch by the Noosa River. Perfect time to enjoy an Aperol Spritz? You'd think so but no. Hubby ordered drinks but mine wasn"t good (weak on Aperol and way too much soda) so naturally I popped back up to the bar and was friendly in my approach. "I'm pretty fussy about my Aperol Spritz. This isn't quite right. You can see that it's a bit weak. Could you put a little more Aperol in it for me please?" Bar Manager frowns and says "Well we have our own recipe." I say "Well then it's not an Aperol Spritz which is what was ordered." "It our own recipe. This will cost you more," he says. "In that case you can just give me my money back." Anyway he reluctantly gave me an extra half nip. The Aperol Spritz recipe has been the same since 1919. Don't mess with perfection! And certainly don't create a problem for a customer by doing so. The food was disappointing and over priced. (It is Noosa though so higher prices to be expected). These guys are trying way too hard to deliver a fancy menu but they missed the mark. They should not rely on having a great view and focus more on friendly quality customer service and really good food.

Friendly staff, moderate prices for drinks, but there was no view even at night. They allowed my friend to charge her phone on a plug. There's tons of seating, so it's a good place to get a single cocktail. There was a claw machine for kids to play with and maybe win some candy. It's not a very social place, particularly for the Saturday evening we went. Expected a bit more from this place, go somewhere else if you want a more social experience.

Noosa Heads, Queensland

25 July 2016

Words / Images: Sandra Tinari

The enticingly named Sunshine Coast is a meandering stretch of relaxed beachside town an hour’s drive from Brisbane International Airport, with Noosa Heads and its chic seafront, Hastings Street, the jewel in its sandy crown. Once just home to surfers, backpackers and creative types, Noosa Heads has been transformed with an influx of urbanites from Auckland, Melbourne and Sydney. It’s now known for its cosmopolitan cafe culture, fresh and varied produce, exclusive shopping and rolling surf (think Australia’s version of Montauk in the Hamptons). Butting on to one of Australia’s most renowned surf beaches and most-visited coastal national park, Noosa Heads derives its name from the breathtaking headlands of Noosa National Park on its southern border, the walking trails of which begin at the top of Hastings Street and lead to secluded seaside bays. To the north, the town is bounded by the Noosa River. Listed as an official Biosphere Reserve by Unesco, Noosa is home to a range of pristine natural environments, including rocky outposts where you can watch whales swim by and forested reserves that are home to koalas. Combining natural beauty with award-winning restaurants, cafes, shopping, as the next few pages will show you, Noosa has plenty to offer.

NOOSE LONGBOARDS

You simply can’t go to Noosa Heads without getting wet in its famous point break waves, which are very beginner friendly on calm days. This place sells classic longboard surfboards and offers board hire and lessons, as well as selling all the gear needed for the beach. The shop, which has graced the town for more than 20 years, is popular for its collection of retro surf items, from mini dancing luau girls for your car, to photography books and Elvis Presley records. 55 Hastings Street Noosa Heads noosalongboards.com Also in the area... ROCOCO BISTRO NOOSA

Rococo Bistro Noosa claims prime position on Hastings Street. Opposite the beach and on the shopping strip’s only intersection, the upmarket bistro and bar is the ideal location for people watching. Buzzing year-round with locals and tourists in search of great coffee and its European-infused modern Australian menu, the restaurant opens onto a large, shaded outdoor terrace, a mini oasis amid the hustle and bustle of Noosa Heads. 42 Hastings Street Noosa Heads rococonoosa.com.au Also in the area... El CAPITANO

For good food and quirky cool head to Hastings Street’s newest restaurant, El Capitano. From the team behind Noosa’s famous Cafe Le Monde, the nautical-style specialist pizza bar entices guests to its first floor location via a port-inspired entrance and leafy, tropical walkway. Don’t let El Capitano’s light-hearted approach fool you – this restaurant is serious about food and serves 72-hour fermented sourdough pizza bases. Enjoy a tropical-inspired drink perched on its peppermint bar stools, or soak up the balmy Sunshine Coast evenings while dining outdoors. 52 Hastings Street Noosa Heads elcapitano.com.au Also in the area...
