Smooth sailing as Sailability resumes
The Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club was delighted to witness the remarkable turnout marking the commencement of the Sailability season last week.
Sailability aims to provide individuals with disabilities the opportunity to experience the joy of sailing, mirroring the enjoyment many others regularly experience. The Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club boasts qualified instructors, seasoned volunteers, and top-notch equipment to facilitate sailing for individuals of all abilities.
Under the guidance of qualified sailing instructors, each participant sets sail on a 12-foot Vagabond sailing dinghy, a widely used vessel for sailing training across Queensland. Carers are encouraged to accompany participants aboard to ensure a smooth transition, if needed. Safety is paramount, with a dedicated safety boat constantly monitoring the activity. Additionally, a new mobility transfer device has been acquired to assist individuals with mobility challenges, simplifying the transfer to the boat.
Sailability, a non-profit international program, was introduced to Australia in the 1990s and has been offered at the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club since 2010.
Its success relies heavily on volunteer and community support. Donations are warmly welcomed, and sponsorship opportunities are available. Community events like the Noosa Come Together Festival and Noosa Gaff Rig Regatta, held on June 8 and 9, contribute crucial funds to this esteemed program.
The Sailability program runs annually from March, every Thursday morning, except during school holidays, spanning 24 weeks. The season culminates in a Regatta and BBQ celebration in September. Participants can access support through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) via their NDIS Plan Manager. Contact the Noosa Yacht & Rowing Club on 5449 8602 to register your interest.

2024 Double Handed World Offshore Championship Sets Sail This Week
Two American Teams to Compete
Starting this week, September 24, two teams from the U . S . will take to the waters of the coast of Brittany, France for the RORC 2024 Double Handed World Offshore Championship. Co-Hosted by Lorient Grand Large, RORC (Royal Ocean Racing Club) and Yacht Club de France, the championship will take place on a fleet of Sun Fast 30 One Design boats and consist of an elimination series and final race.
The two American teams are Erica Lush and Tim Kent, and Barbara (Basia) Karpinska and Kevin Morgan. Both teams have extensive doublehanded offshore experience. Read their full team biographies here: https://www.ussailing.org/news/two-american-teams-invited-to-inaugural-offshore-double-handed-world-championship-in-lorient-france/ . Morgan will take the place of Vladimir (Kuli) Kulinichenko, who was formerly entered with Basia Karpinska.
22 teams from 16 countries – Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, India, Ireland, Japan, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain, Sweden, Turkey and the USA – will battle it out for the title on a course area north of Lorient, along the rugged Atlantic Coast of France.
Lorient, France has been a center of excellence for competitive sailing for decades. It is home to elite level teams in the Ultim and IMOCA Classes, as well as the Mini 6.50, Figaro and Class40. The venue has hosted major events in recent years, including The Ocean Race, Solitaire du Figaro, and the Retour à La Base.
The westerly winds and strong ocean currents that prevail this time of year are expected to produce complex and thrilling conditions for the Offshore Double Handed World Championship.
All teams in the championship will take part in an Elimination Series consisting of two groups. Each team will take part in one overnight race. The first five boats of each group will qualify for the Final Race. The winner of the Final will be the 2024 Offshore Double Handed World Champion.

International sailing races began in 1851 when members of the New York Yacht Club decided to take part in a competition in England. To compete, they built a 101‑foot schooner named America, sailed to England and won a trophy called the Hundred Guineas Cup. The trophy was then renamed The America’s Cup in memory of this first international sailing competition.
Brief overview of the rules
Sailing involves moving a boat solely by harnessing the power of the wind. Mastery over ever‑changing conditions requires both great skill and experience on the part of the athletes. In Olympic events, the rules of the international sailing federation, World Sailing, apply. Competitions are made up of fleet racing, where two equally-matched boats race around the same varied course.
There were ten events at the Tokyo Games, including windsurfing, mixed Nacra 17 Foiling, 49ers and the 470. The various sailing disciplines are constantly changing, and boats are designed to be increasingly small and lightweight, placing ever greater demands on both the athletic and technical capacities of the sailors. Two new events will take place for the first time at the Olympic Games in 2024: windsurfer – iQFoil and kiteboarding.
Olympic history
Sailing has featured on the programme at every edition of the Olympic Games of the modern era. They could not take place on 1 st April 1896 in Athens, however, as bad weather conditions forced the organisers to cancel the events. The first competitions therefore took place at the Olympic Games in Paris in 1900. Since then, the categories included in the competition have constantly evolved. The different events are organised by monotype classes—i.e. their size and weight.
