Unraveling the Mystery of the Kaz II: The Vanishing Crew of a Ghost Ship

Unraveling the Mystery of the Kaz II: The Vanishing Crew of a Ghost Ship

Table of Contents

The discovery of the ghost ship, the investigation: clues and theories, coronial inquest and findings, the impact on maritime safety, the legacy of the kaz ii.

In April 2007, the Kaz II, a seemingly ordinary catamaran, set sail from Airlie Beach, Australia, manned by a three-person crew: skipper Derek Batten, and brothers Peter and James Tunstead. Their plan was a leisurely journey to Townsville and Cairns, but what unfolded turned the Kaz II into one of the most baffling maritime mysteries of the 21st century.

On April 20, 2007, the Kaz II was spotted adrift in the Coral Sea, near the Great Barrier Reef. The Coast Guard's approach revealed a scene that would perplex investigators: the yacht was in perfect condition with its engine still running. A laptop was found powered on, a table was set with food and utensils, and personal belongings were undisturbed. Strikingly, there was no sign of the crew.

The initial investigation ruled out foul play; there were no signs of a struggle or outside interference. The weather reports indicated mild conditions, and the boat was well-maintained, discounting a major accident. This led to various theories:

  • Man Overboard Incident : One speculation is that one crew member fell overboard while trying to free a tangled fishing line or a sail. The others, attempting a rescue, might have also ended up in the water, leading to a tragic chain of events.
  • The Rogue Wave Theory : Some suggest a sudden, powerful rogue wave could have swept the men overboard. However, the lack of disarray on the boat makes this unlikely.
  • Murder-Suicide Pact or Foul Play : While the investigation didn't indicate foul play, some theorized a darker turn of events given the complete absence of bodies or distress signals.
  • Planned Disappearance : Another theory posits that the men staged their disappearance, though their families strongly refuted this, citing their strong ties to home.
  • Maritime Phenomenon or Pirate Activity : The Coral Sea, known for its unpredictable nature, may hold natural explanations, though none have been substantiated. Likewise, there was no evidence of piracy.

In 2008, a coronial inquest was held to determine the fate of the crew. The coroner, Michael Barnes, concluded that the men had likely fallen overboard in calm seas. He suggested that one crew member might have been trying to free a tangled line and accidentally fell overboard, with the others losing their lives in a failed rescue attempt. However, this conclusion, while plausible, remains unproven and speculative.

The Kaz II incident prompted discussions on maritime safety, particularly focusing on the importance of personal locator beacons and the risks of man-overboard situations. It highlighted the need for rigorous safety protocols, even in seemingly calm sea conditions.

The Kaz II has since become a symbol of the sea's unpredictability and the mysteries it harbors. Documentaries, books, and articles continue to analyze this incident, drawing parallels with other maritime mysteries like the Mary Celeste. The lack of definitive answers has left the door open to endless speculation and has cemented the Kaz II's place in the annals of nautical lore.

The Kaz II's story remains a haunting reminder of the sea's enigmatic nature. Despite modern technology and advanced maritime practices, the ocean still holds secrets and mysteries that sometimes defy explanation. The disappearance of the Kaz II's crew is a poignant testament to this, leaving a lingering question that may never be fully answered: what really happened aboard the Kaz II?

The SLCG Magazine

the ghost yacht australia

The Queensland Emergency Management Office revealed that the boat was in serviceable condition and was laid out as if the crew were still on board. Food and flatware were set out on the table, a laptop computer was set up and turned on, and the engine was still running. Officials also confirmed that the boat’s emergency systems, including its radio and GPS, were fully functional, and that it still had its full complement of life jackets. There was even a small boat still hoisted on the stern of the boat, and the anchor was up. The only signs that were out of the ordinary, other than the disappearance of the crew, was one of the boat’s sails had been badly shredded, and that there was no life raft on board (it is unknown whether there ever was one aboard).

Search and rescue efforts began on Wednesday, 18 April, and Australian search and rescue AusSAR sent a Navy aircraft to search in the vicinity of the vessel in an effort to locate the missing men. At the same time, Bowen Voluntary Marine Rescue launched a coastal and island search. At night, an aircraft with infrared capability was used to search the reefs and cays. The next day, a full scale search-and-rescue effort was launched involving Volunteer Rescue Units from several towns as well as the Townville’s coast guard, two rescue helicopters, nine airplanes, and two commercial vessels. Data from Kaz II’s GPS system was also retrieved and analyzed in order to help narrow the search area.

Graeme Douglas, the previous owner of Kaz II, who had sold the boat to Batten stated the boat was in good condition when it was sold and that he had met the men on the night before they set sail. He also helped the men plan part of their route and was surprised to see that, according to the police, the men had deviated from their planned route that was programmed in their GPS system.

A less convincing theory was speculated about Alien abductions, which would explain the boat still being in tact, no signs of distress or struggle or damage, except the shredded sails which can be explained by being abandoned and adrift at sea.

Australian Federal Police raids 'dismantle' crime syndicate, see alleged creator of app for criminal underworld arrested and charged

Topic: Crime

An Australian man is alleged to have created an encrypted platform designed for the use of the criminal underworld.

Italian, Korean and Middle Eastern organised crime groups are said to have used the platform.

What's next?

A number of people will face court on related charges.

A series of Tuesday morning raids conducted by the Australian Federal Police has seen dozens of people charged with illicit drug trafficking, conspiracy, destruction of records and supporting a criminal organisation and firearm charges.

At the top of the list is a 32-year-old Sydney man Jay Je Yoon Jung, charged over allegedly creating and administering "Ghost", an encrypted messaging platform the AFP says has been specifically designed for use by the criminal underworld.

The Narwee man is the first Australian-based person accused of creating an app of this kind. It is alleged he launched it nine years ago when he was 23 years of age.

He was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday morning at the southern Sydney home where he lives with his parents.

His parents are not accused of any wrongdoing.

The 32-year-old faces charges of supporting a criminal organisation, benefiting from proceeds of crime and dealing in identification information.

The AFP alleges he collected hundreds of thousands of dollars from his dealings.

He is expected to appear in Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday morning.

His neighbour Jim says officers used his house to gain access to their target.

"They set off a couple of what do they call them … flashbangs, or something, those sort of grenades designed to disorientate you," he told 7.30.

"They seem to go in at the front and back entrance at the same time. And I know they went in through our yard because they'd taken a panel out of the fence."

Criminal syndicate 'dismantled'

The AFP also says the operation has dismantled a criminal syndicate that used the app to organise drug importations and manufacture a false terrorism plot to pervert the course of justice.

Six men were arrested and charged on Tuesday with a combined 43 offences following a joint investigation with NSW Police into the syndicate communicating via the encrypted mobile application.

The AFP will allege a North Rocks man, 31, was a senior member of the criminal syndicate and conspired to fabricate a terrorist plot involving high-powered weapons and explosive devices between March and April 2024.

It will be alleged messages captured on the encrypted device detailed conversations about accessing machine guns, bombs, hand grenades, rocket launchers and flags with terrorist insignia as part of the conspiracy.

They also allege the man attempted to import trafficable quantities of cocaine in shipping containers. They were seized by Australian Border Force agents in April.

The syndicate is alleged to have been involved in the trafficking of other illicit drugs, including methamphetamine, cannabis and MDMA.

It is alleged the criminal syndicate used "runners" to transport illicit drugs from Sydney to the northern NSW town of Inverell, and transport cash from the sale of the illicit drugs from Inverell to Sydney.

Murder threats and criminal activity

Commander Paula Hudson is head of Operation Kraken and spoke exclusively to 7.30 about the AFP's ability to infiltrate the Ghost app in March this year, which gave them access to 125,000 messages sent by users.

"We will be alleging that this platform is solely being used for criminality and serious organised crime, drug trafficking, drug importation, tobacco trafficking, firearms trafficking, money laundering," Commander Hudson told 7.30.

"Threatening to murder, threatening to harm, standover tactics and criminals seeking to do damage to people."

Up to 38 people have been arrested throughout the operation so far.

AFP officers seized 205kg of illicit drugs, 25 weapons and $1.2 million of cash during the raids.

On Tuesday 700 AFP members were mobilised to execute search warrants across four states.

The AFP has been aware of Ghost for seven years but did not realise the administrator was allegedly Australian until 2021.

It was the French Gendarmerie that the AFP will allege was able to trace the location of the creator to Australia and then raised this with the AFP to join forces and target the platform.

Operation Kraken was formalised in 2022 and has been conducted in tandem with Europol's Operation Taskforce (OTF) NEXT, which is targeting the global operations of Ghost.

More than 600 devices with Ghost installed were active, predominantly in Australia, but also Sweden, Ireland, Canada and Italy.

Commander Hudson confirmed the crime syndicates purchasing and using the app include Italian, Korean and Middle Eastern organised crime groups and outlaw motorcycle gangs The Hells Angels, Comancheros and Bandidos.

Police action is currently being undertaken overseas by partner agencies.

Cracking Ghost

While the tip-off on the alleged administrator being Australian came from France, one of the major moments came via the AFP.

The breakthrough in cracking Ghost came from a technical branch of the AFP affectionately referred to as "uber nerds".

Commander Rob Nelson is head of AFP's Covert and Technical team and he told 7.30 that the AFP will allege the Narwee-based man regularly pushing updates to devices with the encrypted app provided his team with the opportunity they needed.

A man wearing a police uniform sits at a desk.

Commander Rob Nelson says the AFP will now have to prove its methods in court. ( ABC News: Jerry Rickard )

The technical solution created by the AFP used to infiltrate the app is world-first and is a process that could not be replicated in countries like Sweden where the app Ghost is also used.

"Now we have to put what we've done before [an Australian] court and demonstrate to them the method which we've employed and give them confidence that was lawful," Commander Nelson said.

Evidence collected from raids is expected to be sent to AFP offices around the country to be analysed in what is known as the "forensic tail".

This could take months to complete depending on the volume and complexity of items seized.

Afp infiltrates encrypted messaging platform ghost allegedly used by criminal underworld.

Summer Woolley

The Australian Federal Police has made dozens of arrests after infiltrating an encrypted messaging platform allegedly used by the criminal underworld for large-scale drug trafficking, homicides and money laundering.

Among those arrested under Operation Kraken is Sydney man Jay Ye Yoon Jung, 32, who allegedly created the app, Ghost, nine years ago when he was just 23, the ABC reports.

He faces charges of supporting a criminal organisation, benefitting from proceeds of crime and dealing in identification information and is expected to appear before Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday.

Commander Paula Hudson told 7.30 that the AFP will allege the platform is “solely being used for criminality and serious organised crime, drug trafficking, drug importation, tobacco trafficking, firearms trafficking, money laundering, threatening to murder, threatening to harm, standover tactics and criminals seeking to do damage to people.”

AFP technical experts managed to infiltrate the “impenetrable” platform in March this year by modifying the administrator’s software updates, giving them access to 125,000 messages and 120 video calls.

The AFP will allege the platform is “solely being used for criminality and serious organised crime”.

Hudson said more than 600 devices were actively using Ghost, and while most were in Australia, organised crime gangs in the Middle East, Italy and Korea were also being investigated.

The AFP operation was conducted alongside a global task force established by Europol to dismantle the platform including the FBI, French National Gendarmerie, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Irish Garda Siochana.

In a statement to 7NEWS.com.au, an AFP spokesperson confirmed it is undertaking a “significant operation” across NSW, Victoria, Western Australia and South Australia.

Several arrests were made on Tuesday.

Six men were arrested and charged on Tuesday alone with a combined 43 offences. Up to 38 people have been arrested in total.

“AFP Operation Kraken is targeting alleged organised criminals accused of using a secret platform to import illicit drugs and plan other serious crimes in Australia and around the globe,” the spokesperson said.

“There is no current or impending threat to the community.”

The AFP is expected to hold a press conference on Wednesday morning.

Haunting moment ghost ship is spotted by sailors near the Bermuda Triangle

Haunting moment ghost ship is spotted by sailors near the Bermuda Triangle

The dangers of the area where the sailors discovered the 'ghost ship' have been explained.

Joshua Nair

Joshua Nair

The moment that two sailors spotted an abandoned vessel and boarded it in the middle of the Bermuda Triangle is quite haunting when you realise what has happened in the area over the past couple of centuries.

Also known as the 'Devil's Triangle', the conspiracy theories surrounding the Bermuda Triangle started on 5 December, 1945, when Flight 19 took off from Florida before disappearing.

The triangle's points are Bermuda (northern-most), Puerto Rico (southern-most) and the Florida coast, near Miami (western-most).

But what makes it so dangerous?

Well, Flight 19 went missing for starters, with no bodies or wreckage found and from 1945 to 2017, about 10 reported incidents have been reported of lost aircraft.

Add the maritime figures to that, with 14 ships vanishing from 1800 to 2015 in the same area, and it starts to look quite bizarre indeed, with several people blaming the disappearances on alien kidnapping, among other things.

However, Australian scientist Karl Kruszelnicki has gone against this notion, telling news.com.au that the number of planes going missing in the Triangle is the same as anywhere in the world 'on a percentage basis', according to Lloyds of London and the US coast guard.

Speaking of the harmful weather that can take the area over as a possible factor, Channel 5 documentary, Secrets of the Bermuda Triangle , also shared these opinions.

Nick Hutchings, a mineral prospector, revealed: “Bermuda’s basically a sea mountain - it’s an underwater volcano. 30 million years ago, it was sticking up above sea level. It has now eroded away and we’re left with the top of a volcano.

“We have a few core samples, which have magnetite in them. It’s the most magnetic naturally occurring material on Earth.”

They made an odd discovery at sea (Ocean Research Project/YouTube)

So basically, people get lost - but that doesn't make the area any less scary, as a pair of sailors found out.

The members of the Ocean Research Project were exploring the Atlantic Ocean, making a chilling discovery in the Bermuda Triangle in 2013, as they came across an unmanned ship without a running motor or upright sail.

There was no sign of anyone on board, so they climbed aboard to see if there may be anyone on the vessel that might need medical attention.

One of the members, Matt Rutherford, filmed as he stepped on board the 'ghost ship', confirming: "This is one awfully abandoned sailboat. Wolfhound from the Irish Yacht Club.

"I have no idea what's inside, I'm going to go and search around and I hope I don't find any dead bodies or anything crazy like that."

He admitted that he was scared to open any doors in case he found something haunting, but he was relieved to have found no dead bodies.

"This is absolutely crazy by the way. 800 miles from Bermuda, 1,500 miles from the US, standing on a very nice Swan 48, in the middle of the ocean," he said.

They found nothing and nobody onboard the abandoned ship (Ocean Research Project/YouTube)

Rutherford then managed to get in touch with the boat's owner, who offered him a reward if he could tow it back to Bermuda - and they tried to.

By their second day, they hauled the boat about 50 miles, as he added: "It's kinda funny, (towing a) 48ft boat with a 42ft boat. We're doing our best trying to get her to Bermuda."

But after 47 days at sea, they were running low of fuel, and despite managing to get some fuel from a passing freight ship, the abandoned vessel had to be cut from the tow line after getting wrapped around their rudder, which was at risk of breaking off.

Online investigators reckoned that the vessel belonged to a skipper from the Royal Irish Yacht Club named Alan McGettigan, who was travelling with three crewmates and needed to be rescued by a Greek cargo ship 64 miles north of Bermuda.

The Wolfhound vessel was left damaged by 20ft waves and 50-knot (57mph), and Alan made the decision to abandon his shit for their safety, before it was found by these two nine weeks on.

Colin Jost Reveals How Scarlett Johansson Reacted When He And Pete Davidson Spent $280 Thousand On A Ferry (What He Calls ‘Absolutely The Dumbest’ Purchase)

I've made some weird purchases in the past, but...

Colin Jost and fellow SNL veteran Pete Davidson are incredibly close – so close that they made an interesting investment a few years ago. In a surprising move, the two comedians bought a ferry together for a whopping total of $280,000. (Yeah, you read that right.) Since then, there have not only been various accounts about why Davidson and Jost acquired the boat but also what they ultimately planned to do with it. Now, Jost is getting real about how Johansson reacted to what he now refers to as “absolutely the dumbest” purchase.

Let’s be real, many of us have surely made impulsive purchases in our time, whether they be on clothes, jewelry or electronics. However, I’d imagine that very few of us can say that we’ve bought a massive boat on a whim. Colin Jost recently recalled having done just that in 2022, and it sounds like he doesn’t think too highly of that decision. He told People that he now considers it the most “least-thought-through” buying decision he’s ever made. Additionally, the Weekend Update host explained how he justified it to himself at the time:

It is absolutely the dumbest and least thought-through purchase I've ever made in my life. The way I justified it is for the amount of money we were putting into buying it, on just a basic square-footage level, is if you found the right place for it to be, you were essentially buying a building on its side that's 65,000 square feet. So around New York, that is a very good price per square foot.

Pete Davidson previously claimed that he and Colin Jost were high when they bought the 60-year-old ferry. However, Jost later stated that he wasn’t high but found it more concerning that he made that transaction while “stone-cold sober.” What’s even wilder is that the boat was reportedly a major fixer-upper, which could’ve been viable had a shrewd business plan been in place right away. However, Jost and Davidson have apparently dragged their feet on that front.

So how exactly do you tell your spouse that you randomly bought a massive transport boat that’s not even sea-worthy? Well, as the Coming 2 America star explained during his interview it sparked an intriguing conversation. Scarlett Johansson, who married the SNL star in 2020, ended up asking a direct and “very fair” question upon learning the news. As for how she feels now, she’s apparently been emphaszing one specific point to her hubby and his buddy:

She was just like, 'Wait, so you own this boat now?' Very fair question. She now obviously sees the value in it, but also I think she's like, 'It's now become something that is a defining thing for you guys and an interesting thing for you guys. So you should take it seriously and figure out the best version of it, because for better or worse, it's going to reflect on you.' We don't care because we're comedians.

By all accounts, the two comics really don’t care, at this point. Earlier this year, it was reported that Colin Jost and Pete Davidson planned to make the ferry into an entertainment venue with plenty of offerings for visitors. However, the boat, which they humorously called “Titanic 2” hasn’t seen much activity, though a few renovations have been made. Locals in New York were also beginning to take issue with the boat, with one saying “it belongs in the scrap yard.” With that, Davidson and Jost may want to heed Scarlett Johansson ’s advice, though it’s hard to say if they actually will.

Check out Colin Jost when he returns to the Weekend Update desk amid the premiere of Saturday Night Live Season 50 on September 28 amid the 2024 TV schedule . You can also revisit his and Pete Davidson’s funniest bits in past episodes by streaming them with a Peacock subscription .

'Just a ghost': abuse victims speak out after decades

Phil and Joseph Wright, who were two of Allan Huggins' victims, have spoken at his sentence hearing. Photo: Flavio Brancaleone/AAP PHOTOS

Two brothers who suffered shocking acts of sexual abuse at the hands of their former school counsellor have revealed how it shattered their lives irrevocably, as they faced him in court.

Allan Keith Huggins was found guilty in August on 36 counts of molesting 10 young male patients in Armidale, in northern NSW, between 1977 and 1986.

On Tuesday, brothers Phil and Joseph Wright, who were among those the now 77-year-old was convicted of abusing, delivered victim statements at Sydney's Downing Centre District Court.

Phil Wright said his punishment for being a victim of Allan Huggins' crimes is never ending. (Flavio Brancaleone/AAP PHOTOS)

Phil Wright said that nearly 50 years after the abuse occurred, one unanswerable question still echoes in his head: "why?"

"Why you made the choices you made, why me?" he told the court.

"The punishment - and it does feel like a punishment - that I face simply for being a victim of the crimes of Allan Huggins is never ending."

Joseph Wright told the court he was sexually abused by Huggins every school week for roughly two years.

"I encountered this degradation on at least 70 occasions - a far cry from the indictment sheet," he said.

After uttering Huggins' name just once, Joseph Wright said he would not let it "degrade" his mouth again, telling the court his entire life had been stolen.

"I am just a ghost, an echo of who I was meant to be," he said.

"I wanted to be known as a survivor but this is not survival.

"I am his victim. I had my entire life stolen from me as a child."

Joseph Wright said his life was stolen from him as a child. (Flavio Brancaleone/AAP PHOTOS)

The victims of Huggins crimes in NSW were forced to wait more than a decade for him to finish a prison sentence in Western Australia, before he was extradited to NSW to face justice.

In 2015, a WA jury had found he had abused seven boys while working as an education officer in a school-to-work program in 1990 and 1991, and he was sentenced to nine years in jail.

Crown prosecutor David Patch told Tuesday's hearing, there was a "multiplicity of other offending, on other occasions" for which charges against Huggins have never been brought.

"Your Honour would accept ... there were in fact many other such events," Mr Patch said

The abuse in NSW took place at a youth centre for troubled boys, as well as at a school and at Huggins' own private practices.

Huggins used his position as a counsellor to gain access to victims he knew were vulnerable, including those with behavioural issues or from dysfunctional family backgrounds, Mr Patch told the court.

"They were almost always children in particular need of care," he said.

"Need of care from the offender."

Mr Patch told the court in one of the instances the victim was put under hypnosis and his clothing was removed, before being abused.

"He was naked and powerless," Mr Patch said.

In another instance in which Huggins penetrated his victim he told them it was painful to prepare them for a trip to the dentist the following day.

"The offender caused that pain deliberately," Mr Patch said.

Mr Patch told the court the impact on the victims of coming forward that they were abused is considerable, particularly given some were not believed.

"More than one tried and were not believed by the Catholic Church, by the school and by the police," he said.

Huggins listened silently from the dock taking notes on a pad as the parties discussed his fate.

The matter will return to court on Wednesday
