Puerto de Pollensa is a family oriented holiday town on the relatively quiet northern side of Majorca, around an hour from the airport by bus. Though it has an illustrious history, over the years it has become an important holiday resort with its beautiful beach, marina and port. Mallorca has a reputation for attracting the 18-30 crowd with wild nightlife and a 24/7 experience. Like its neighbour Alcudia to the east, Port de Pollenca doesn't try for that crowd. There are still lots some very good bars and restaurants you can relax and soak up the atmosphere.
The holiday resort is around 3km from the old town of Pollensa, a town that has been inhabited and dominated by a range of Mediterranean empires for close on 3,000 years. Both towns are administered by the local government here, and the culture vulture will love things like the 1900 year old bridge left by the Romans, the Arab-built irrigation systems that made farming possible and a range of Christian churches and monuments. For those who bring their walking boots, a trek up the 330m high Puig (mountain) is definitely to be recommended.

Explore Port de Pollenca By Renting A Yacht
On a Puerto Pollensa yacht charter you can explore the coastline of the biggest island in the Balearics or do a bit of island hopping. Around 60km south from Pollensa as a crow flies is the capital of the Balearics, Palma de Mallorca. This is a cosmopolitan city that many say is at least as good as Barcelona with its sophisticated style, great shopping and top end restaurants.
Less than a day's sail away to the west is the hippy island of Ibiza and neigbouring Formentera with your choice of secluded coves, riotous partying and beautiful beaches and an alternative culture that rivals Glastonbury or San Francisco. Out to the northeast from Puerto Pollensa you can explore Menorca that has much the same on offer as Majorca but in microcosm.

Palma Airport
With two million passengers passing through the airport every year, Palma Airport is one of the busiest on the Mediterranean Sea. This is an hour's bus ride from Port de Pollenca - much of the route being motorway, you may find a taxi doesn't take much less time.

The sailing season in the Balearic Islands is best from May to October. The major party towns heat up to full frenzy in June to August, and so do the prices. It is very much down to what you want from a sailing holiday in the islands - if partying all night is on the cards, the top DJs will hit the region in that time and you will have quite a memorable time. If the quiet life is what you seek, then do try to get out during term time - the sea is still warm in September and October, though the infamous Tramontana starts to be more frequent at this time of year, as it eases off in early May.

The NE breeze common to coastal Mediterranean France dominates Majorca, a cool relief from the summer heat. It never really gets above 17 knots or so so there will be some boisterous sailing but never more than is fun. You will see more precipitation towards the beginning and end of the sailing season (May and October) but the temperatures rarely stray below 15-17 degrees during those times. In the height of summer (July/August) it isn't as hot as mainland Spain, though you will see the odd few days in the 30+ C range. For Northern Europeans and those from other cooler climes this makes for fantastic sailing!

Full Day Sailing Tour
We depart the bay of Pollença heading towards Cala Bonaire. We drop anchor where you have time to swim, snorkel, paddleboard and we also set up our diving board (the only yacht with a diving board, and we call it the plank), and we even feed the fish. After, we head up the coast to sail across the bay arriving at the island off Formentor, to have a full lunch and chilled local wine. After lunch, while you soak up the sun, we head back along the coast to take our last stop outside the famous “Night Manager’s” house, to have a last swim before enjoying a glass of Cava heading back Port.

Sailing Qualifications
To skipper a bareboat charter or flotilla yacht, you need to hold a practical sailing certificate equivalent to RYA Day Skipper Practical qualification or RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC) . For charters in Greece, you must now have the ICC certificate . You must also be assisted by at least one competent crew member over the age of 18.
The port authorities in Greece are now insisting on one of the following practical certificates: RYA ICC (International Certificate of Competence), RYA Coastal, RYA Yachtmaster, ASA IPC (International Proficiency Certificate) or the IYT (International Yacht Training) Passport. If you hold an RYA Day Skipper or ASA104 it will no longer be accepted and you need to obtain either an ICC or IPC from the corresponding issuing body (RYA or ASA). If your RYA Coastal/Yachtmaster or ASA105/106 certificate is more than 12 years old and does not have a photo ID, then we would also strongly advise applying for an ICC or IPC. If you are a member of the RYA or ASA, you may qualify for a discount or free certificate, otherwise, you will have to pay. The approximate cost is £50. Please use this link - RYA application for the ICC or ASA application for the IPC.
For charters in Croatia, Malta and the Canaries , at least one member of the crew or the skipper will also need a VHF licence .
RYA qualifications can be obtained by RYA sailing schools in the UK or alternatively choose from one of our overseas centres in Gibraltar, Greece or Turkey .
For Seychelles, the local authorities require an ICC for the skipper of a bareboat or flotilla yacht charter.
For Caribbean and Tropical charters, formal qualifications are not compulsory, however, you should be Day Skipper standard and be assisted by at least one competent crew . A brief sailing resume should be provided to outline your experience.
For Thailand A Day Skipper qualification is required as a minimum and you must have at least 3 weeks of skippering experience prior to your charter. A VHF qualification is compulsory.

Sailing Levels
Winds force 2-3 (4-11 Knots)combined with generally shorter distances. Good for beginner or intermediate sailors. Line-of-sight navigation but basic knowledge of charts and ability to plot your position required.
Winds force 3-5 (7-21 Knots) with approximately 15-20nm per day. Intermediate experience required. Predominately line of sight navigation but an understanding of how to sail in open water.
Winds force 4-6 (11-27 Knots) with mileage of approximately 20nm+ per day. Ideal for experienced skippers looking to venture out to new destinations. Day skipper standard but with experienced crew would be recommended.

Mallorca has ideal conditions for a sailing holiday with steady afternoon breezes from the north Force 3-5. Stronger mistral winds can blow from the north-west for a few days. The passages between the Balearic islands are more exposed. Summer temperatures average 26-30ºC.
We have rated this destination a 'Level 2' (levels info) and you will need RYA Day Skipper or ICC qualification for bareboat charters in Mallorca. Level 1 sailors can stick to the south and east coasts where it is more sheltered, level 2 can circumnavigate the island whilst level 3 sailors may want to head to Ibiza and Fomentera or Menorca.
