The shipyard that built the ‘titanic’ has filed for bankruptcy.
Other key features include a 2.8-tonne-capable helipad on the foredeck, side-opening tender garages, a professional DJ setup and an office/conference room with separate secretary facilities.
Armed with preliminary designs, the owner set about finding a builder. A combination of busy shipyards, long lead times and exorbitant prices saw the owner turn to Marco Chilena, an outpost of Seattle-based builder Marco Marine, with facilities in Chile’s Atacama Desert. “The yard specialized in commercial fishing vessels and hadn’t built a single yacht, but they were starting a 236-foot yacht project for a top Italian owner and quoted highly competitive prices,” says Freivokh.
Seizing the opportunity, the owner instructed Freivokh to complete designs for a total of three projects, sized at 236 feet, 256 feet and 328 feet. His aim was to repeat the success he’d had spearheading the build of five Benettis with a group of owners. Marco Chilena commenced work on two of the yachts, building the hull and part of the aluminum superstructure on the 236-footer and laying the keel for the 256-footer, before the yard had serious financial troubles. All work stopped, and the 236-foot hull was placed on a platform and towed thousands of miles along the West coast to Delta Marine in Seattle, where it sat untouched for the next seven years. Delta’s fee to correct and finish the build exceeded the original quote by $58 million. Incidentally, the other owner, who had started a new yacht in the Chilean shipyard, also had it towed away, first heading to New Zealand before being finished at a shipyard in Turkey. Now named Victorious , it made its world debut at Monaco alongside Project X .
With Project X temporarily shelved, the owner completed Meamina , a 195-foot Benetti that he used to cruise during the summers and winters, before Jonathan Beckett, CEO of Burgess Yachts, reignited his interest by recommending Greek shipyard Golden Yachts. It proved a good fit, and Project X ’s hull was sent across the Atlantic where it underwent a 28-month completion program.
More than 40 types of leather, woods, marbles and onyxes are featured on board, including leather ceilings, silk carpets, walls dressed in Amazonian fish skin and floor tiles made from black Sahara noir marble with gold and white veining. The bar on the upper deck has undulating cladding made from glass bottles filled with a whisky-colored liquid, for which Massari designed rubber-coated spring supports to keep the bottles sea-fastened. In the formal dining area, a 13-foot-long wine cellar inspired by a bank vault delivers ‘wow’ factor.
A key area is the beach club, an original part of the design that largely benefited from the decision to move the gym to the sun deck, leaving the beach club entirely devoted to relaxation. It includes two saunas, a massage/beauty room, a large sofa that rotates to face out to sea, and the attention-grabbing pool.
“The glass-sided pool allows the adults to keep an eye on the children as they are playing and brings additional light into the beach club, both of which were important elements for the owner,” Captain David Cherington told Robb Report . Though accessed from the main deck aft, the glass-encased bottom of the pool sits suspended in the center of the beach club, clad in silver Xs.
The ‘X’ symbol features prominently throughout the yacht, from the atrium to the stern area to the monogrammed cushions and even the yacht’s name. While Project X sounds cool, it was conceived by Freivokh to compensate for structural inconsistencies during the initial build.
The full-beam 1,400-square-foot owner’s suite, located aft of the bridge and atrium, enjoys 180-degree views and its own exterior deck, with a dining room and spa pool. Even when maintaining a commercially active lifestyle onboard, the yacht suits the needs of the owner’s family as well as proving a popular charter yacht. But, alas, it would seem the owner’s mind is always on the next project. Project X is available for sale “at the right price,” says Freivokh.

Dave Hagewood and Danielle Hill onboard Galaxy Like many ocean-obsessed-experience-seekers, Dave Hagewood and Danielle Hill became hooked on the superyacht lifestyle as soon as they started chartering yachts in the Mediterranean and Caribbean. But once they got a taste of the luxury, mobility, and the ability to enjoy exclusive adventures with their tight group of family and friends that large yachts provide, they soon realized that chartering would never be enough. They needed to own a yacht that would reflect their unique tastes and desires that they and their community could live an aboard for as long as they wanted. Superyacht Galaxy's night-club-inspired main salon is exactly what Hagewood and Hill wanted And lucky for them, design experts Marie Soliman- Berglund, Albin Berglund and Sarah Colbon of Njord by Bergman Design House did way more than just “refresh” the interior of the pretty conventional 184-foot-long, 2005 Benetti they found. In fact, Hagewood’s newly relaunched Galaxy is the ultra-luxe- Burning Man -inspired, superyacht spaceship the young, first-time superyacht owner always knew he wanted. Superyacht Galaxy “I was just magnetized to this,” says Hagewood when he talks about first stepping aboard. “We vibed with it even though it was an older boat with a dated interior because we’re good at imagining what could be changed. Galaxy's interior is inspired by space and Burning Man Sarah Colbon describes how she and the husband-and-wife team of Marie Soliman-Berglund and Albin Berglund were able to exceed Hagewood’s expectations. “The design concept was always about Dave and Danielle’s love of life, passion for creating their own community like they find at Burning Man and gifting everyone who steps onboard an energy that’s pure and unforgettable. Galaxy their very own spaceship.” “We want Galaxy be the creative focal point where everyone can be free to do what they want and just have a ton of fun and bring their own talents and energies to the boat and see what happens,” Hagewood adds. The forward area of the owners suite is designing for Hagewood and his friends to hang out under ... [+] the "stars." Hagewood’s background (he founded Psyonix LLC that developed the wildly successful video game Rocket League and was eventually sold to Epic Games in 2019) also brings some fresh perspective to superyacht ownership as well. “There are lot of yachts out there that are very private, very closed. And there are lots of people that are kind of just retired sailing off into the sunset,” he says. “But there are a few that are open to the energy and the vibe we're bringing.” The upper saloon onboard Galaxy “Their passion for outer space and that feeling of being in another world meant so much, Galaxy became this, but it’s also their home on the water,” Colbon adds. “It touches the senses from head to toe, especially in the main salon which can be their very own private members club, a super comfortable space to chill in the afternoon, a movie theater and then transform into a nightclub where Dave can play his latest music track.” The hot tub deck is forward of the owners suite. Other unique design features include the master suite that has a music studio and unique snuggle space in their private apartment in the bow. And the cosmic-inspired accents including the illuminated headboard with their own star signs is off-the-hook.  The human side of yacht ownershipHow would you characterise the typical yacht owner? Whatever you may have been led to believe, the truth is simple: for most, it’s about using their yachts for precious family time, and for many it’s also about using their yachts for good. There’s a theme that is repeated on countless yachts large and small the world over – superyachting, for most, is not about being seen but rather the opposite. It’s about yacht families and their friends enjoying precious, private moments away from the pressures of demanding business lives and the long hours running those businesses can entail. “I have an extended family, and when our schedules allow we all like to gather on the yacht and spend some quality time as a family,” Douglas Barrowman , owner of the yacht Turquoise , told Superyacht Life back in 2017. “There is no place like a yacht for family togetherness.”  Douglas Barrowman with family A love of the sea, adventure and technology Superyachts and yacht ownership are also a way to explore the world around us, and to interact with and grow to understand extraordinarily diverse communities from remote Pacific islands to the Scandinavian Arctic. It’s something that inspired tech entrepreneur Jasper Smith to combine his love of adventure and his love of the sea with an opportunity for owners to give back while indulging their passion. “I have always had a deep passion for the ocean,” Smith says. “I grew up watching Jacques Cousteau movies and being enthralled at the idea of being challenged by an endeavour.” When he set out to find his own perfect explorer yacht, however, he realised it didn’t yet exist. His answer was to create Arksen. “My aim with Arksen was to create the perfect machines to enable adventure,” he enthuses. “I also wanted to build sustainable boats which considered full life cycles, from material sourcing to recycling.” That’s not all – Arksen also asks owners of its yachts to sign up to a pledge it calls 10% for the Ocean, where they will donate 10% of their vessel’s time to philanthropic activities. “A lot of people who have the money feel a responsibility to try and make sure that the oceans are well looked after,” Smith explains. “The people that are attracted to Arksen are passionate about the ocean and want to go off on slightly more advanced expeditions and trips. With that audience, there is a tremendous buy-in to the boat being for more than just their own purposes.”  Superyachts as a force for good It speaks to the heart of the matter, which is that the superyacht industry and yacht owners in particular have a heart – they care about preserving the environment they enjoy, and they care about the communities they interact with who make them feel so welcome when they visit. It’s reflected in the smallest of gestures, such as donating materials and books to local schools, to the largest – helping with last-mile delivery of critical disaster relief. It’s about superyachts giving back. It’s a positive-impact attitude toward humanity that is quietly typified by hundreds of superyacht owners, who often prefer to do their thing under the radar rather than take false glory for their philanthropic or humanitarian endeavours. For some it’s as straightforward as getting involved in projects with organisations like YachtAid Global . For others, their endeavours become a key reason for yachting. American superyacht owner Carl Allen is a prime example of these philanthropic yacht owners. After selling his company, and having enjoyed chartering and owning yachts as a family for years, Allen set up Allen Explorations to deliver a full programme of projects, ranging from historical shipwreck searches and environmental research to disaster relief. Indeed, Allen’s support yacht Axis played a vital role in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian – one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the Bahamas. “We had to drop everything and help after the hurricane,” says Allen. “ Axis delivered over £700,000 of supplies and made multiple trips to Little Grand island in the Bahamas. We’ve turned it into the epitome of how to organise hurricane relief.” The team helped get the local school back up and running, and organised for a group from Florida Power and Light to help restore power. “The island also lost their water tower,” he adds, “so we delivered four tanks on Axis .”  Jasper Smith Celebrating the good in the superyachting good life From family time to time spent embracing the global family, superyacht owners have a far greater positive impact than many assume from preconceived ideas about what a superyacht is and the sort of person who owns or charters one. It’s one of the reasons The Superyacht Life Foundation, in association with the Monaco Yacht Show , has unveiled The Honours, which is a way to celebrate the people of our industry rather than the yachts which so often get sole focus. It’s about recognising the extraordinary contributions that people make, the change they inspire, the opportunities they create, and the lives they change. On 26 September, the eve of the 2023 Monaco Yacht Show, three honourees – nominated by people from across the superyacht industry, and selected from a shortlist by an expert panel of industry judges – will be feted for their work and contribution to superyachting. These are industry professionals and yacht owners who epitomise what superyachting can do. These are people who highlight the good in the superyachting good life. Yacht owners, impactful journeys All around the globe, yacht owners are enjoying precious time on their yachts with family and friends, and many are also realising that their yachts can be a force for good and for change, tying in with their philanthropic works and humanitarian endeavours. “Our yacht is a platform for much of our life,” offers Joe Anderson , co-owner of the Benovia Winery in California with his wife, Mary Dewane. “For instance, we used it at a fundraiser for cystic fibrosis in Baltimore at the 200th anniversary of the Star-Spangled Banner event. The Blue Angels were flying overhead and used Bella Una [the couple’s yacht] as a GPS coordinate and performed flybys, tipping their wings at us. It was quite a thrill. Cause of Death Determined for 'One-of-a-Kind' Chef Aboard Luxury Yacht That Sank in Sicily, Sources SayRecaldo Thomas “was a one-of-a kind special human being," a friend said :max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():format(webp)/IMG_3727-8428c198b72943c1b50172df47a3847f.PNG "yacht x owner") The cause of death for chef Recaldo Thomas, the first person found dead after the Bayesian yacht sank off the coast of Sicily last month , has been determined, PEOPLE confirms. Thomas died of drowning after the 183-foot boat sank following a severe storm on Aug. 19 , according to sources close to the ongoing investigation. His body was recovered outside the vessel not long after the yacht went into the water, and sources say he had seawater in his lungs. The chef was one of seven victims in the sinking, Italian authorities have said. Twenty-two people were onboard the Bayesian — 12 passengers and 10 crew — at the time. Fifteen of them were subsequently rescued. The victims included Thomas as well as Chairman of Morgan Stanley International Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy Bloomer ; New York City-based lawyer Christopher Morvillo and his wife , jewelry designer Neda Morvillo; and British tech businessman Mike Lynch and his daughter Hannah . While Thomas drowned, testing is ongoing to determine if the six other victims, who were found inside the Bayesian after it sank, may have suffocated because an air bubble they were in ran out of oxygen and filled with carbon dioxide, PEOPLE previously reported. Recaldo Thomas/Facebook Thomas' friends have mourned him since the tragedy. One friend previously told The Independent that he “was a one-of-a kind special human being.” Eli Fuller, another friend, told the BBC that the chef was somebody young children from his native Antigua looked up to. "He was sought after," Fuller said. "The kids would see all these white people working on yachts. For them to see an Antiguan man traveling all over the world — it was important for our community." Gareth Williams, who had known Thomas for 30 years, said that Thomas lived in Antigua during the yachting off-season and worked in part to help his parents, the BBC reported. "He told me just the other day that he needed to work two more seasons to fix up his late parents' house," Williams said. "He loved yachting, but he was tired." A source close to the survivors previously confirmed to PEOPLE that Mike Lynch and the other passengers on the Bayesian had been celebrating with family and friends following Lynch's acquittal from a U.S. fraud trial in June. In the wake of the sinking, James Cutfield, the yacht's captain, and two crew members have been questioned by Italian authorities. Authorities also opened a manslaughter and negligent shipwreck investigation in connection with the sinking, but no one has been charged or accused of a crime.  This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Nathan Marx, a deckhand for a superyacht. It has been edited for length and clarity. From 2020 to the end of 2023, I was a quality controller at an engineering company that made mining machinery in South Africa, I managed 132 employees and earned 3,000 euros, around $3,333 a month. My future was pretty secure at the company, but I lacked that sense of adventure and felt like there was more to life than working away every day and not seeing the world as I would like. I knew some friends who had entered the yachting industry since leaving school, and it looked very intriguing and adventurous. My previous job had long hours and was hard work, which made me comfortable stepping into the yachting industry. When I started working on deckhand certification courses in January this year, I was told about these massive yachting hubs where it'd be easier to find work opportunities because they were saturated with boats. Related stories One of those was Antibes, France. I moved there in May this year and traveled the entire coastline of the south of France, dock walking daily, exploring the vessels, and putting myself out there to catch the right opportunity. I started documenting my job search on TikTok on the day I left for France. I was very nervous that I didn't have a job yet, and I wanted to stand out and get a step ahead in my job search. I love expressing myself through video creation, so the two went hand in hand. I met this girl who works on this vessel docked in Monaco for the season. She saw my videos, and we got to know each other. I was the first person she contacted when they needed a deckhand. So it's all about getting in front of the right people's eyes. My role on the yacht is to ensure the boat's exterior is pristine. Everything regarding the exterior, from the hull to the deck, to any furniture outside, is my responsibility to ensure that it is presentable for guests. I also help with basic watchkeeping when the yacht is out at sea. Now, three months in, I'm at the bottom of the food chain and I'm earning 1,000 euros less every month than I did back in South Africa. But this career has room for growth and will keep me above the ceiling that I reached in South Africa in my management job. One thing I realized working on yachts is that you live in the same space as your coworkers. If something bothers you about a person and you keep quiet, it builds within you and just sours the relationship on board. You have to foster a relationship with them that is a lot more fruitful than a normal employee would. I think I also value that because not only am I getting to travel or experience all these crazy things that normal people in a 9-to-5 usually won't, but I'm also meeting people and creating connections with them that'll last a lifetime instead. That real connection with people also gives me satisfaction. Having a life outside this industry might be challenging because anything can happen at the last minute. You might have time to spare one moment, but you're expecting guests the next, and you're suddenly back to work for a week. So whatever you have planned just needs to fall on the back burner. But the maritime industry here sets out work-life balance very well, and I think that's also one of the things that drew me to the yachting industry because my previous job did not value my personal life. So, after the hard work, I get a lot of off time, and I have time to go and experience things and step off. One of my favorite places I visited was a beautiful little town on a hill with an absurd history called Bonifacio, on the island of Corsica, France. We also had the privilege of hiking up into the old city, an amazing experience I don't think I would've had otherwise if I wasn't into the yachting industry. I once spoke to a person who's been in the industry for around nine years. He told me about chartering Will Smith and all these big A-list star names, which sounded so enticing. I haven't had any of those or any experiences like that, but the individuals we meet on this boat are very high-net-worth because renting the vessel I work on costs about 78,000 euros a week. We once had a client with 3.2 million Instagram followers on board and had a normal conversation with her. It was humbling to me because you always think these people will be different or special in some way, but at the end of the day, they're just normal people. She never mentioned anything about her success once. It was so normal that I was surprised. It's very motivating to be surrounded by individuals like that because they make you feel that their success is possible for you, too. The superyacht industry is unlike other luxury sectors. The places people visit are so unique that not everyone gets to see them. The cost involved is also quite exorbitant, with some yachts going for 500,000 euros a week. So, the client has a level of expectation of luxury they want to receive, and you have to live up to very high standards that no other luxury industry has. My career can progress from here in many ways, and I'm trying to explore all those avenues. But the yachting industry is a tight-knit community that's made me very happy over the past few months, so I'll stay for as long as possible. A jury found Skylar Strickland not guilty of battery after a daylong trial in Clearwater on Wednesday. Strickland, the 35-year-old owner of St. Petersburg vape shop Tubular Tokes, stood accused of battering Madison Hayward, 22, in the parking lot behind his Central Avenue store. “I’m just really glad that this is done,” Strickland said Thursday by phone. “You know, seven years, I’ve never had an incident like this, and I never want to have another.” The verdict came after 9 p.m. in Pinellas County court, following around 25 minutes of deliberation by a jury comprised of five men and one woman. Several times on Wednesday, jurors were shown a late-night video captured by a witness in an upstairs apartment showing Strickland hitting and kicking Hayward while she was on the ground last November. Photographs presented to the jury showed Hayward covered in bruises and cuts the following morning. Strickland never denied that he was the person in the video but testified that he was acting in self-defense after Hayward trespassed in a fenced-off area and tried to force her way into his shop. Stickland’s attorney argued that because Hayward had blacked out and could not remember leaving the Lost & Found bar next door, there was no proof that she had not sustained her injuries before encountering Strickland. “That’s ridiculous, but that wasn’t the question we were in court to answer, anyway,” Hayward said by phone Thursday. “The question was did he batter me.
