The flybridge version with a retractable roof offers enough space for a dining area with a small lounge and a dedicated helm station. For owners who do not need the additional space of the 62 3-deck configurations, the flybridge version offers enough space and outstanding 360° visibility.

An additional open deck instead of the flybridge combines the benefits of larger catamarans with the compact dimensions of the 60 Series. The open sky lounge is a fantastic outdoor community space, equipped with a full dining area including a panoramic view and a superyacht atmosphere.

The closed version of the 62 3-Deck further develops her character as a compact superyacht. Providing additional indoor space, the closed third deck is available in two options: a choice between a sky lounge or an exclusive owner’s deck makes sure it can be tailored towards individual needs.

The Master cabin is located below the bow in the front of the main deck. This replaces the additional exit in the front of the salon.

Kite sail system

Adding the option of a fully automatic towing kite gives the 60 Series the opportunity to make use of the wind without shading the panels. The either 9m² or 12 m² sized kite flies at heights where winds are much stronger, thus being able to create up to 10x more pulling power compared to a conventional sail.

The SoelCat 12 solar electric catamaran is integrally designed for electric propulsion right from the first line drawing to the matched propeller. Every aspect of this vessel contributes towards its highly efficiency for solar electric sailing. MOBILE POWER STATION

Screens for sun shading can be applied on good days, while transparent rain screens protect your guests in bad weather conditions. With both the Okeanos Foundation and Soel Yachts sharing a vision of sustainable sea transport and striving for a healthier planet, we are honoured that our partner, the Okeanos Foundation has funded and supported the development of the SoelCat 12. With greater awareness about pollution, sustainable and emission reduction practices have become increasingly salient in the maritime industry. The International Maritime Organization envisions a reduction in CO2 emissions by 40 percent by 2030 across international shipping to combat climate change.

The nautical sector has found a promising solution with the invention of electric catamarans. These vessels are powered by electrical energy, offering a more ecological, energy efficient, and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional cruising.

Making The Switch to Electric Catamarans

Electric catamarans are propelled by electric motors that draw power stored in lithium-ion batteries. These massive batteries are replenished by solar panels, wind turbines, hydrogenators, or a combination of all, allowing electric catamarans to ply oceans with an extended range.

What Makes Electric Catamarans Convenient?

Did you know that one litre of oil is capable of polluting one million litres of water ? What is more is that catastrophic oil spills only account for five percent of the total water pollution, the rest of the major chunk is avowed against engine emissions, oil leaks, and refueling from waterborne vessels. This oil contains hydrocarbons and heavy metals that damage the aquatic environment and adversely affects human health.

To avoid contamination, eco-conscious yacht builders and manufacturers, like Sunreef Yachts Eco, have launched electric catamarans that are less likely to harm wildlife or water users. With electric catamarans, there are no risks associated with spilling fuel as they need not make their way to an oil pump for replenishing.

The Batteries on Sunreef’s Electric Catamarans

Sunreef Yachts Eco fully electric catamarans are equipped with custom engineered marine battery banks that offer prolonged battery life and more power despite compact size and optimized weight. With a density below 5.2kgs per kWh, these lithium-ion battery packs are recognized as 30 percent lighter than standard battery systems used worldwide. The reduced weight of the battery accounts for lesser drag, which translates to reduced energy being consumed by propulsion.

Additionally, the battery size is also smaller, leaving more room in the hulls to expand on living space. The ability to charge the batteries of this electric catamaran in harbors across the world, regardless of the voltage, adds a unique level of versatility and convenience for cruising.

It is important to note that Sunreef Yachts Eco equips each model within its range with custom marine lithium battery banks, scaling between 400 to 700V with pack sizes extending up to 1MW. Their capacity allows for nearly two days of air conditioning and house appliances use. These are fast charging, long-lasting batteries with a lifespan of up to 10 years; but even after years of service, 80 percent of the original capacity is maintained.

The Utilization of Renewable Energy on Yachts

Energy regeneration onboard an electric catamaran allows them to have an unlimited range without relying on external fuel sources, making them fully self-sustaining. Installing a clean green energy production to the catamaran’s existing battery pack makes it far easier to run the essential electric components onboard.

Renewable energy produces no GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions despite powering the world’s growing fleet of electric catamarans. To protect the oceans, here are the three major renewable energy types that can be harnessed onboard an electric catamaran:

1.  Solar Power 

The utilization of solar energy on electric catamarans has proven to be a significant step in decreasing the consumption of environmentally damaging fossil fuels such as gasoline. Sunreef Yachts Eco has successfully produced its in-house engineered, patent pending technology, solar panels that can be fully integrated into the composite bodywork of the electric catamaran. The energy produced is stored in lithium-ion batteries.

These are the industry’s lightest solar panels, that can be mounted on the superstructure, hull, or mast, for maximum power generation. In general, multihulls offer a more stable platform for accommodating a large solar array in comparison to monohulls.

2.  Marine Wind Turbines

Marine wind turbines (also known as wind generators or wind chargers) are mounted atop catamarans to maximize the conversion of kinetic energy of air in motion to electricity. This in turn keeps the battery banks charged in the absence of solar power; hence playing a vital role in the energy mix of electric catamarans.

It is generally a stable source of power throughout the day, regardless of whether the vessel is docked or under navigation. That being the case, the more wind pressure the catamaran encounters, the more power the turbines produce. Overall, wind turbines significantly reduce operational costs by minimizing fuel consumption.

3.  Hydro Generation 

Hydro generation allows you to create power whilst sailing in an electric catamaran. Simply put, harvesting the momentum of waves converts kinetic energy into electrical energy, which can later be fed into batteries to supply electricity to the ship.

Sunreef Yachts Eco redesigned their sailing catamarans to draw power from the energy of waves rather than fossil fuels. Because regeneration can even come from the free spinning of propellers when the boat is under sail, it proves to be a viable method for procuring clean, green energy. Additionally, it has proven to be highly efficient on electric catamarans produced by the shipyard as the electric power can be recovered from two engines.

Air Conditioning

For starters, electric catamarans from Sunreef Yachts Eco are the only ones to boast an energy-saving, gas-based air conditioning system, providing notable energy efficiency for a sustainable yachting experience.

This system consumes 70 percent less energy than the standard air conditioning system. Not only is it capable of running on batteries throughout the night to guarantee a peaceful sleep onboard, but also provides top-notch humidity control in tropical regions.

Another ongoing project by the research and development team at Sunreef Yachts Eco is the Zero Cat , a 90 feet catamaran with unique clean, green power generation capabilities.  This superyacht ’s fuel cell system will convert methanol to hydrogen onboard for zero-emissions cruising.

Sunreef Yachts Eco also aims to be the first shipyard to incorporate hydrogen on its electric catamarans as a substitute to conventional energy. Combining hydrogen power with electric propulsion would enable the 80 feet sailing catamaran to achieve unrivalled autonomy for eco-conscious cruising as it powers both onboard appliances and engines.

Revolutionary All Electric Perfomance Catamaran

The most exciting performance-focused catamaran to hit the sailing world, the Open Waters 40 is an all-electric catamaran that leverages the latest in yacht construction technologies designed to maximize the thrill of sailing yet still provide the creature comforts of a multihull.

Great handling and speed

The ESC40 is a 40-ft catamaran designed to be two to three times faster than the typical cruising cat – using carbon fibre to reduce weight and provide increased hull strength.

The twin helm stations are covered by a solar cell-covered roof and come with a 59m2 main sail in addition to three headsails: Jib 26 m ² , FRO 65 m ² and Asail 121 m ² .

The hull is rated to handle boat speeds in excess of 20 knots. With curved retractable daggerboards providing better upwind handling and performance at speed.

The retractable rudders, together with the low draft of 2 ft, allow the boat to cruise in shallow waters and to be beached on the bow or stern.

Using 10 kW motors, the close-quarter power and handling is unrivalled. The folding propeller generates electricity while sailing together with the roof-mounted solar cells, recharging the battery while in operation.

The integrated drives, battery and battery management systems are intelligently inter-connected and provide real-time and predictive insights on power consumption, generation and operational range.

The boat comfortably accommodates four adults and two children, and is sure to bring you all modern comforts such as a 400L water reserve shower and an electric stove.

The hull interior boasts 6’4” of head room with the coach offering even more generous space with 6’8” of head room up to 7 at the aft dinette. The wet deck, spacious with 300 ft ² between hulls features the main stateroom.

Each hull features three deck hatches and six portlights for excellent ventilation while the trampoline across the beam is 305 ft ² of play, relaxation and dolphin viewing.

Vacuum Resin Infusion

Vacuum resin infusion is the process at the heart of our technology and is used for all parts.

The vacuum resin process removes all of the air between the fibres of a part prior to the introduction of the resin.

After the process, our parts are meticulously sanded with variable grit — allowing for maximum paint adhesion on surfaces and smooth, stylish edges.

Core Materials

Core materials are introduced into the part to increase stiffness without increasing weight.

The core is a structural-grade foam with a high shear strength characteristic: if the part is of a complex shape, we cut the foam into sections, thermoforming it to the required shape.

We use five different sizes and densities of foam on the boat, optimized for local strength requirements.

We purchase carbon fiber by the roll and over 35 rolls are used in each boat. We have engineered the laminate schedule to be most efficient in the various areas of the boat maximising strength and reducing weight.

Each meant to be the most efficient for their respective areas. The fabrics are stitched, instead of weaved.

Stitched fabrics do not need to bend over or under other fibre and lay flat, making a stronger part.

At Open Waters, it is our mission to make catamaran cruising more exciting and environmentally sustainable. We’ve set out to create a performance cruising catamaran that will be a joy to sail and that will raise the bar in environmental sustainability.

We have developed a unique  design and manufacturing process, selected high performance  materials that enable us to build a boat that uses less materials and is 50% lighter. As a result it is a lot faster and as a result it is able to generate and store the energy needed to propel it electrically for hours and provide enough energy for on board equipment.

We use high performance carbon fibre and a vacuum infusion process to maximize strength and reduce the use of resin and eliminate resin vapour emissions. We use 100% recycled PET foam core wherever possible and we see the opportunity for incremental use of bio-based epoxy and natural fibres in our future.

As we continue to develop our sustainability roadmap for our boats we will perform a full lifecycle analysis to identify other opportunities to minimize our carbon footprint. 

The unique processes and skills we have developed can be applied and licensed to other marine and recreational vehicles businesses.

Simon Angus

Simon Angus P.Eng is a professional mechanical engineer with a background in project management and a passion for sailing.

He spent his university summers travelling around Europe searching for the best combination of wind and waves in addition to teaching both sailing and windsurfing.

After moving to Canada in 2004, Simon bought a Catalina 27 in Kitimat BC and enjoyed sailing in the Douglas channel with his young family. A career move to Alberta paused his sailing career until he found the joys of chartering sailboats in the Caribbean.

After a 20 year career in industrial engineering and project management he decided to make a change and combined his passion and profession to launch Open Waters Design and Manufacturing in 2016.

He designed and manufactured an 18ft canoe and developed a plug and mold and his proprietary vacuum resin infusion process.  After the successful build of the canoe, Simon built a high performance 18ft A class foiling sailing catamaran out of  a Carbon fibre and refined the mold construction and vacuum resin infusion process.

After researching the various build steps, Simon started with CNC shaping of a plug, hand finishing and building the hull molds. He also built the mast, Z foils and the Tee foil rudders. After successful trials in Vancouver BC, Simon then set out on his next ambitious project, to design and build the boat he had dreamt about for years.

A boat that could be shipped anywhere in the world, sail on with his family and returned to Vancouver for summer cruising and would be electrically sustainable.

Simon was introduced to Hal Whitacre in 2019 which started a design relationship that has resulted in the creation of the Open Waters ESC40.

Hal Whitacre, owner of Whitacre yacht design since 1984 and is responsible for some of the fastest and most luxurious boats ever built.

Hal is Open Waters Chief Naval Architect and has worked closely with Simon over the past 2 years to produce the detailed designs that make up the Open Waters ESC 40.

Hal has a distinguished career in Naval Architecture graduating from the University of Michigan with a degree in Naval architecture and Marine Engineering.

Throughout his career he has pushed the boundaries of naval architecture notably designing the Open Class 60 “Imagine”; breaking ground with the largest rig ever put on an Open 60.

Hal also owns and operates Bruce Roberts USA and in that capacity, he has designed over 100 steel and aluminium boat kits in addition to many fiberglass and  wood sail and power boats. Most recently, Hal was the chief Naval Architect for Gunboat Catamarans when they were built in the USA.

Since their move to Europe, Hal has completed 2 gunboat 55’s along with a conversation of a gunboat 55 to a powercat ferry which has recently conducted successful sea trials.

Hal and his wife Tammy split their time between Annapolis, Md and Sister Bay, Wi.  Hal continues to race Lasers during the winter and windsurfs/foilsurfs as much as possible.

Sailing expert’s solar Boat review

Recently, one of the most popular sailing YouTube channels, Saliling La Vagabonde , published a very honest and interesting review of the solar powered yacht Silent 55. Here’s a summary of their experience:

  • 7 Days onboard (6 nights)
  • Travelled 145nm with an average speed of 7 knots
  • Generator used for about 12h (in total)
  • Fuel consumed: 208 liters

Here are some interesting observations they made:

  • While cruising it may feel less stable than a standard sailing boat because it doesn’t have a sail to stabilize it when hitting the waves.
  • For the Silent 55 it was possible to move at about 3 knots by using only the power generated by the solar panels (without using the batteries) on a sunny day. This means that if you are moving the solar yacht around quite frequently, you will end up using the generator quite a lot to produce the necessary power.
  • When the batteries are out of power, the Silent yacht is using a (diesel) generator to supply the necessary power to keep the boat moving and to power the appliances.
  • A great luxury yacht with all the comforts and going in the right direction for the future of the sector.
  • Overall, the Silent Yacht is a great eco-friendly alternative to a power boat , while if you are thinking about cruising around the world, you would be probably better off going for a standard sailboat (or for some of the hybrid alternatives mentioned in this article, like the HH44).

Why are solar yachts all catamarans?

Rossinavi's new 34-metre explorer yacht with hybrid electric propulsion

If there’s one shipyard cementing itself even further as a leading superyacht builder, it’s Rossinavi, with the recent launches of 59-metre explorer yacht Akula , 49.9-metre No Stress Two and 65.7-metre Alchemy , which took home the prestigious Motor Yacht of the Year at the World Superyacht Awards 2024.

Just when it seemed Rossinavi had reached its pinnacle, the shipyard stunned the global yachting industry by venturing into the catamaran market with the launch of what it calls its “most innovative project” to date. The 42.8-metre hybrid-electric catamaran named Seawolf X , previously known as Sea Cat, features cutting-edge innovations, such as solar panels and AI, a testament to Rossinavi's commitment to the environment through its BluE initiative, which launched in 2022.

BOAT sits down with Rossinavi’s COO, Federico Rossi, to unpack some of the superyacht’s standout features…

“This kind of propulsion philosophy works very well on multihull vessels,” Rossi explains. “Catamarans are very efficient when it comes to navigation as they can reach good speeds with little power. They are also very stable boats, so they rely less on stabilisation systems that use lots of battery power. The wider beam also allows more surface area for the solar panels.”

Nature-inspired design

The exterior of this "futuristic" catamaran is the work of Fulvio De Simoni Yacht Design , boasting a streamlined, low-profile silhouette reminiscent of a sports car. The design includes three distinct exterior living areas: a sociable cockpit centred around a pool, a spacious sundeck with areas for sunbathing and relaxation, and a bow area featuring a hidden pool that transforms into a home theatre.

The designer also incorporated solar panels, optimising surface area for energy recovery as part of the shipyard’s commitment to environmentally friendly features. The hull's efficiency was enhanced through lightweight solutions, including an anchor installation that met weight standards and improved the vessel's aesthetics.

Inside, the design draws inspiration from nature, evoking the sun, sea and sand. "We used natural materials and, when possible, natural colours, to achieve this," says Rossi.

Energy-efficient features

The model operates with three distinct “performance scenarios”. For one-day trips, the catamaran can cruise entirely in full electric mode. On multi-day voyages, she maintains electric mode for 90 per cent of the time. Even on transatlantic journeys, she manages to cruise in electric mode for 80 per cent of the time.

“When the owner is not on board, the vessel goes into ‘hibernation’ mode when only the fundamental systems on board are in use," Rossi notes. The hibernation mode activates when the catamaran is moored, minimising consumption and allowing the excess energy generated to be supplied back to the quay or a private property. Seawolf X produces enough energy to power an entire villa.

Additionally, the catamaran is equipped with two diesel generators capable of quickly recharging the batteries. She also features fast charging, meaning she can fully recharge at shore power within just five hours.

Embracing the power of artificial intelligence

The catamaran features an onboard artificial intelligence system known as Rossinavi AI, designed to enhance comfort and maximise the yacht’s environmental efficiency. The AI constantly monitors the vessel’s operations, acting like a brain that learns from observation and anticipates the needs of guests.

Rossinavi AI maintains continuous communication with the crew, advising them on how to adopt lower-impact behaviours and promoting conscious cruising. “For example, if the chef is cooking in the galley and there is laundry in the washing machine and dryer at the same time, the system picks up a peak in consumption and informs the crew,” Rossi says.

The AI software also monitors the battery pack, ensuring it remains within the optimal range of 20-80 per cent to prolong its lifespan. Additionally, it supervises and interacts with the crew to maintain efficient operations.

Looking ahead, Rossi envisions advancing AI capabilities in future Rossinavi models, with the potential for the system to alert guests when dolphins or other wildlife are nearby, ensuring they don't miss the chance to enjoy such sightings.

Rossinavi Launches 140′ Hybrid-Electric Catamaran

Italian yacht builder Rossinavi announced the launch of the M/Y Seawolf X , a hybrid-electric power catamaran capable of cruising in full electric mode for 100 percent of the time on one-day trips.

In a press release from the company, Rossinavi announced the innovative yacht carries the BluE label designating the shipyard’s new sustainable philosophy. Seawolf X has a 140-foot length overall, 45-foot beam and is an all-aluminum vessel that combines sleek design with environmentally friendly solutions.

The press release notes that the catamaran can cruise in full-electric mode for 100 percent of the time on day trips and 90 percent of the time on multi-day trips. Rossinavi also states that the vessel is capable of making transatlantic trips while in electric mode 80 percent of the time. 

The Hibernation mode, kicking off when the power catamaran is moored, reduces consumption to a minimum and the energy generated can be given back to the dock or a private property. Rossinavi boasts that the Seawolf X supplies enough energy to charge up an entire villa. The ship’s two diesel generators can quickly recharge its batteries on shore power in five hours.

“After years of study and construction, it is now a source of satisfaction and pride for us to witness the launch of project Sea Cat, now Seawolf X , the first hybrid-electric multihull vessel,” said Rossinavi COO Federico Rossi in a press release. “This yacht showcases remarkable technological innovations in both power management and propulsion technologies, marking the beginning of a new chapter in next-generation vessels.”

Rossinavi’s BluE label hybrid-electric yachts are propelled by batteries and solar panels with the goal of reducing CO2 emissions. Energy collected by these solar panels during the day is stored in advanced batteries and released at night, creating a bioluminescent effect similar to glowing plankton.

On top of its environmental perks, Seawolf X also includes an onboard artificial intelligence system developed by Rossnavi. Rossinavi AI constantly analyzes the operation of the vessel and acts as a brain that can learn from observation and predict the needs of the guests on board. Rossinavi AI is able to talk with crew members and monitor the battery pack to keep it in a range of 20 to 80 percent –the ideal range to ensure better battery pack lifespan.

The boat’s exterior architecture is by Fulvio De Simoni Yacht Design , while New-York-based practice Meyer Davis Studio designed the interiors. The Fulvio De Simoni Yacht Design team came up with a sleek and low-profile silhouette, reminiscent of a sports car.

The yacht has three distinct spaces for outdoor living: a lively cockpit centered around a pool, a large sundeck with sunbathing and living spaces, and a bow area featuring a hidden pool and convertible home theater. The yacht design team accurately integrated solar panels into the vessel, ensuring plenty of surface space for energy recovery.

“We set out to envision the boat of the future, unbound by convention yet grounded in feasibility with cutting-edge technology for minimal environmental impact,” said Fulvio De Simoni, founder of Fulvio De Simoni Yacht Design, in a press release.

If you’re in the market for a small boat, there’s a whole ocean of choices out there for you.

1. Aquawatt 550 Elliniko

The Aquawatt 550 Elliniko isn’t the fastest boat on the planet, only reaching speeds up to 20 mph. This is the case with most electric boats, it seems, but it’s a small price to pay to save the environment (and your wallet, considering today’s gas prices).

Despite the slower speeds as compared with combustible motors, the Aquawatt 550 Elliniko is as reliable as a gasoline-powered vessel.

It’s an excellent choice for those looking for a day of leisure on the water.

The Elliniko also has plenty of storage and passenger space. The navigation cockpit boasts of a large center console for the captain and there’s a removable mattress in the bow area. There’s a self-draining anchor locker in this area as well. There are also four watertight lockers available for extra sleeping bags, first aid, or other provisions.

Considering Speed

Twenty miles per hour isn’t actually all that slow when compared to most electric boats on the market today, to be fair. Is it a lot slower than traditional combustible engines that use gasoline? Absolutely.

But the Elliniko is one of the fastest electric boats available to the public at the moment.

The fastest electric boat in the world right now is the SAY29E Runabout Carbon with a top speed of a full 50 knots (93 miles per hour). They are preparing to start building for series production now, but it isn’t available for purchase yet.

2. Aquawatt RIB

If you want to go a little faster than the last model’s 20 miles per hour, then take the Aquawatt RIB for a 30 miles per hour spin. It’s an inflatable electric boat with a stylish and durable fiberglass bottom. This means that transporting this boat from your home to the dock should be a lot easier on your back than a tradition non-inflatable vessel.

The Aquawatt RIB is an amazing electric boat for recreational days on the water, especially if you’re trying to reduce your carbon footprint! It can handle four to six adult passengers, so it’s perfect for family outings. There’s nothing quite like a picnic on the water to create some great memories with your children or spouse.

Of course, this is also a wonderful option for someone who likes to have the occasional cocktail party with friends or coworkers out on the harbor.

This boat could quickly be a great opportunity to network with colleagues or clients, helping you to build working relationships steeped in fun memories!

There are three different models of the electric Aquawatt RIB.

You can buy them in 12-foot hulls, 14-foot hulls, or 16-foot hulls. Choose the model that best suits your needs. Are you thinking you might need less room, as it will usually only be you and/or your family on the boat? Or do you think you might want to bring a family friend or two?

3. Duffy 18’ Snug Harbor

This electric-powered boat can seat a full eleven passengers, which means this is the electric boat you want to take out for a nice party on the water.

Its top speed is only 6 mph, however, so make sure if you go far, you allow yourself enough time to get back to shore if you have other appointments that day.

At cruising speed, this vessel’s battery will last a full seven and a half hours! At top speed, it dips to three and a half hours, however. Keep this in mind while you’re on the water and make sure to conserve your battery.

The total distance that you can travel on this battery power is about 17 miles.

Considering the battery life and the speed, this electric boat would probably be best used on a small lake or large pond on your property. Even using it in a harbor where the coast is never far from view would be advisable. This isn’t a boat you want to take on long, harrowing journeys to discover new worlds, but a boat to enjoy the sun reflecting off the water as you laugh and joke with friends and family.

It’s called “Snug Harbor” for more than one reason.

This vessel has a full enclosure of windows and a very small deck, so don’t think you’ll be using this for a lot of sunbathing (unless you want to try sunbathing through the windows). The good thing about this is that it makes it easy to enjoy your boat in the warmer or colder months, during rainy days or windy ways, because the elements can’t reach you with their full force anymore.

This is truly an all-seasons kind of vessel!

4. Duffy 22’ Bay Island

This model from Duffy has the most interior space than any of its other models, which means that it would be excellent for overnight camping trips on the water! Wonder why it’s called the Bay Island? Because it’s got a full window enclosure big enough for twelve people! This keeps you shielded from the weather while also giving you a full 360-degree visibility.

It’s exactly like having your very own island out on the water.

Unlike the previous Duffy model we discussed, the Bay Island has an even greater battery life! You not only get to take an extra passenger along for the ride if you like, but you also get almost double the battery life at cruising and top speeds!

You’ll be able to take this model out of view of the coastline without as many reservations or wariness as you had with the Snug Harbor.

Having a greater battery life also means you can go a little further from the coast without needing to worry too much about being stranded with a dead battery (although all Duffy models have a gauge at the navigation station to inform you of your fuel life).

So now you can take your party a step further – literally!

This model will also allow you to use a double battery system, which would enable you to achieve greater speeds. A single battery takes a full twelve hours to recharge, so a twin system would take double that. Keep this in mind when deciding what kind of battery system you’d like with this model.

5. Duffy 22’ Sun Cruiser

At first glance, this Sun Cruiser might look the same on paper to the Bay Island. It has almost all of the same features as the Bay Island, after all, right down to the hand-polished mahogany steering wheel!

However, this model actually gives you more of a deck! It’s like choosing a giant house with no yard or choosing a slightly smaller house with a patio area.

And just like when choosing a house, you have to ask yourself whether the patio is all that important to you or not. Would you rather have more house instead? Only you can answer that question.

This is a great choice for those boaters who would like to sun themselves while out on the water. Or for those who want to feel the cool sea breeze on their faces while toasting their beloved under the night stars.

Having a deck on your boat is a more pressing question than when you’re deliberating on whether to have an outdoor area in a house. After all, on land, you could just go to your local park to enjoy the open sky.

But on a boat, the only land you have is what you’ve brought along with you!

There’s also seating out on the deck, so you can move away from the rest of the party to have a private conversation if you desire. The Sun Cruiser is the place to be for romantic getaways or a full-on party. It’s all up to you!

Aquanima 40 series

Azura marine, this $500,000 electric yacht can cross oceans on just battery and solar power.

Singapore-based Azura Marine unveiled a new $500,000 electric yacht that they claim can complete “non-stop ocean voyages powered only by sunlight.”

The electrification of transport is slowly spreading into maritime transport.

While the focus has been commercial vehicles like ferries, it is also reaching leisure and personal vessels.

Azura Marine is the latest to enter the space with its first solar-powered catamaran yacht, the Aquanima 40 series, unveiled earlier this month in Bali, Indonesia.

The company describes the electric vessel:

“She is a unique 4 cabin, 8 guest yacht designed for extended cruising without any need for fossil fuels or refuelling stops of any nature. The Aquanima 40 solar-powered catamarans are also equipped with a 56 m2 rain catchment system, water maker and air conditioning water recovery – rendering water supply stops unnecessary too.”

Azura Marine claims that the vessel can continuously cruise thanks to its large 10 kW solar power system and 60 kWh battery pack.

Onboard Solar Eclipse, all water is self-produced, including fresh and drinking water, thanks to the yacht’s water-maker, air conditioning water recovery system and gigantic rain water collecting solar roof.  She features a high quality marine sound system and all round WIFI connectivity.”

Azura Marine Co-Founder and CEO Julien Mélot commented on the launch of the new electric vessel:

“it was an enormous thrill to launch the yacht last week and undertake her first few miles at sea.  The yacht met all our expectations and while the design makes for near silent operation with exceptional responsiveness, it was incredible to actually experience it  – and all in the knowledge that we were not producing any harmful pollution or emissions.  With some strong winds and a very tight to enter marina berth, we were delighted by how easy the yacht was to manoeuvre.  We simply cannot wait to take her out on her maiden voyage.”

“I will revenge this world with love”

This project is about love and obstacles in its path. The dress serves as the screen for wedding rituals, love’s romantic and dramatic moments taken from Parajanov’s films. The projection is accompanied by the audio mix made of film music and dialogue pieces.

Audio-visual installation

This project is based on the tragic story of Sergei Parajanov’s love to Nigyar, his first wife, who became a victim of traditions. Nigyar, a Muslim girl, born in the family of Moldovan Tatars, was killed by her own family soon after the wedding, because of the religious differences. Parajanov was too poor to ‘buy out’ Nigyar’s life. Such ‘honor killings’ are still widespread among many nations today.

Nigyar’s image stayed with Parajanov forever – as his tragedy, pain, inspiration and shadow. In his films, he repeatedly pictured wedding rituals of various ethnicities, as well as obstacles set by traditional families for beloved ones (‘Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors’, ‘Ashik-Kerib’).

Bride’s white dress is the core element of the installation – a symbol of Parajanov’s love to Nigyar, of the first love in general as well as a ritual element of a girl’s initiation – her symbolic ‘death’ as virgin bride and rebirth as wife.

The dress serves as the screen for wedding rituals, love’s romantic and dramatic moments taken from Parajanov’s films. The projection is accompanied by the audio mix made of film music and dialogue pieces.
