PORTICELLO, Sicily -- Specialist cave divers working in 12-minute underwater shifts were searching Tuesday for six missing passengers and crew, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, believed to be in the submerged wreck of a luxury yacht that was slammed by a powerful storm and swiftly sank off Sicily.

The sleek yacht, named the Bayesian, was carrying a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers when it suddenly sank near the Mediterranean island that is part of Italy at about 4 a.m. on Monday. One body has been recovered and 15 people survived.

Fire rescue officials have said the six believed to remain in the sailboat's hull will be considered missing until they are located in the wreckage.

Here's what we know so far about the sinking and those who were on board.

Italian civil protection officials believe a sudden and fierce storm that battered the coast of Sicily in the early hours of Monday whipped up a waterspout in the exact spot where the 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian was moored.

Karsten Borner, the captain of another yacht moored nearby, said he saw the Bayesian during the storm but when the wild weather passed it was gone and he saw only a red flare lighting the night sky, the Italian news agency ANSA and the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported.

Borner and one of his crew boarded their tender and found a lifeboat carrying 15 people, some of them injured. They took them aboard their yacht and alerted the coast guard.

Rescue authorities said the wreck was resting at a depth of 50 meters (163 feet) about a half mile offshore of the picturesque fishing village of Porticello.

Among the missing is 59-year-old tech tycoon Mike Lynch , sometimes described as the British Bill Gates. Lynch was acquitted in June of all charges in a U.S. fraud trial linked to the $11 billion sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011.

Lynch still faced a potentially huge bill stemming from a civil case in London that HP mostly won during 2022. Damages haven’t been determined in that case, but HP is seeking $4 billion. Lynch made more than $800 million from the Autonomy sale.

A Cambridge-educated mathematician, Lynch made his name running Autonomy, which made a search engine that could pore through emails and other internal business documents to help companies find vital information more quickly.

Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter Hannah was reportedly among the missing. His wife, Angela Bacares, and 14 other people survived.

Among others still missing Tuesday, according to the civil protection agency, were one of Lynch’s U.S. lawyers, Christopher Morvillo of Clifford Chance, and Morvillo’s wife, Neda. Morvillo was regarded as an elite defense lawyer and was also a federal prosecutor in New York after 9/11.

Also missing was Jonathan Bloomer, the non-executive chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife, Judy. He is the former head of the Autonomy audit committee and testified for the defense at Lynch’s trial.

Bloomer was also chair of the Hiscox Group, an insurer that does business on the Lloyd’s of London market.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event,” Hiscox CEO Aki Hussain said in a statement.

Among the survivors was Charlotte Golunski, who said she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to grab her and hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, ANSA reported. The father, identified by ANSA as James Emslie, also survived.

The Dutch foreign ministry said a Dutch man survived. The ministry, citing privacy, did not release his identity.

One body was recovered on Monday, identified as the on-board chef.

The Bayesian was a luxury yacht built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Nav. It was known for its single 75-meter (246-feet) aluminum mast — one of the world’s tallest. Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week.

Its registered owner is listed as Revtom Ltd., based on the Isle of Man, according to online maritime database Equasis. Lynch’s wife is listed as Revtom’s sole owner, according to corporate registration documents from the Isle of Man.

The yacht's name is an apparent reference to “Bayesian inference,” one of the two main approaches to statistical machine learning and the one that was used by Autonomy.

Waterspouts are tornadoes that form over water and can happen when a storm moves across warm water.

According to the U.S. National Ocean Service, there are two types of waterspouts — fair-weather and tornadic.

Tornadic waterspouts “have the same characteristics as a land tornado. They are associated with severe thunderstorms, and are often accompanied by high winds and seas, large hail, and frequent dangerous lightning,” the service says on its website.

While scientists haven’t attributed the specific event to climate change, average monthly surface temperatures have been at record highs for months . Hotter air can hold more moisture, making heavier storms more likely.

Sicily has been baking under intense heat this summer , and the United Nations’ panel of climate change experts notes the Mediterranean Sea is particularly vulnerable to climate change, with warming rates roughly 20% higher than the global average.

Experts say it is extraordinarily rare for a luxury sailboat of this size to capsize due to weather events.

“This just doesn’t happen. You know, boats sink because things like keels fall off, or they run aground and breach the hull ... whereas just from a weather angle, a boat that big being pushed over on its side is absolutely extraordinary,” said Skip Novak, a lifelong sailor who has taken part in multiple round the world yacht races and written books about sailing.

Novak said he believed that strong gusts likely pushed the yacht over 90 degrees to its side, and the vessel did not recover because of the weight of the huge mast and because it was anchored. He suggested that internal doors were likely not closed, and water quickly poured in to sink the vessel.

“When you’re at anchor, even if it’s blowing with a storm in the Mediterranean, you rarely shut the whole boat down because nobody expects something like this to happen," Novak told The Associated Press. “So if the boat wasn’t completely watertight at the deck, you’d have flooding going in. It would take a couple minutes and that would be it."

As the search for the missing continues, authorities already have begun trying to piece together exactly what happened.

Prosecutors from the Sicilian town of Termini Imerese have opened an investigation, as is normal in such events even when no suspects are identified. To date, they have not commented publicly.

The British Marine Accident Investigation Branch said four of its inspectors were being deployed to Palermo.

Deep-sea divers with Italy’s firefighter corps resumed their search on Tuesday for six missing passengers — including a British software mogul and his daughter — of a yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily the previous day.

Twenty-two people were on board the 180-foot British-flagged sailing yacht, the Bayesian, which was anchored near the port of Porticello, when it was hit by what witnesses described as a waterspout, a small tornado on water, during a sudden and violent storm.

Fifteen people who managed to get to a raft were rescued by the captain of a nearby sailing cruise ship. The body of the yacht’s cook, identified by news outlets as Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian Antiguan, was recovered on Monday. But several people are still unaccounted for, according to Salvatore Cocina, an official with Sicily’s civil protection agency.

Those still missing are Mike Lynch, a British technology entrepreneur; his daughter Hannah; Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Christopher J. Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford Chance; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

Mr. Lynch was acquitted of fraud in a U.S. trial in June, ending a high-profile, decadelong legal battle against accusations that he had defrauded Hewlett-Packard when he sold his company, Autonomy, to Hewlett for $11 billion.

Mr. Lynch and the others went missing days after Mr. Lynch’s co-defendant at the fraud trial, Stephen Chamberlain, a former vice president of finance at Autonomy, was fatally struck by a car on Saturday while out for a run, his lawyer, Gary S. Lincenberg, said in a statement.

Prosecutors in the Italian city of Termini Imerese, east of where the yacht sank, are opening a formal investigation into the yacht’s sinking. Reached by telephone, the chief prosecutor declined to comment.

The search for the missing passengers began on Monday but was suspended late that night as crews found themselves limited to the bridge deck and items like furnishings “obstructing passage,” the firefighters’ corps wrote on social media .

When divers resumed the search on Tuesday, ships trawled the waters near the site, the corps said in a statement. The Italian Coast Guard also said in a statement that search operations were “continuing unabated,” with the deployment of helicopters. There was no evidence that gasoline was leaking from the yacht, the Coast Guard said.

The yacht was lying on its right side in about 165 feet of water, meaning that divers, working in pairs, could stay underwater for only about 12 minutes at a time, said Luca Cari, a spokesman for the firefighters’ corps.

Divers were seeking a safe point of access to the vessel’s cabins. “Obviously, everything fell and the space is very tight,” Mr. Cari said, adding that the divers were having to remove obstacles, like furnishings and electrical wiring, that were “completely blocking passages.”

The firefighters’ corps said in a statement that it was impossible to verify whether people were inside the hull.

Mr. Cari said that several divers had been part of the search-and-rescue operations when the Costa Concordia, a cruise liner, capsized off the Tuscan island of Giglio in 2012, killing 32 people. It is considered one of the worst maritime disasters in modern Italian history.

“It’s like the Costa Concordia, but much smaller,” Mr. Cari said in a telephone interview, comparing the search operations. “In the Costa Concordia, we came across many obstacles but we somehow were able to overcome them. Here, the obstacles block the passages and have to be removed.” He added, “This makes it more difficult.”

Crews were also trying to raise the yacht, which experts will examine to try to determine why it sank. Until then, experts can only hypothesize what happened.

Karsten Borner, the captain of a ship, the Sir Robert Baden Powell, which picked up the Bayesian’s 15 survivors, said in an interview that when the wind picked up around 4 a.m. Monday, the Bayesian was about 490 feet behind his vessel. Once the wind wound down, he said, he could not see the yacht anymore.

“My theory was that she was capsized first and then went down over the stern,” Mr. Borner said.

Dario Boote, a ship structures and naval architecture professor at the University of Genoa, said: “Now I imagine that a whole series of lawsuits will be triggered, obviously to ascertain whether there is any responsibility, as always happens very unpleasantly in these situations.” He said, however, that in this case, responsibility might be hard to determine. “Clearly, only once the wreck is raised will we know more,” he added.

Several fishermen told Italian news outlets that they had witnessed a waterspout. Peter Inness, a meteorologist at the University of Reading, said they were relatively common in the Mediterranean, though their occurrence and intensity are unpredictable.

“Until one actually forms, you can’t start telling people where it is,” Mr. Inness said, or “how to get out of the way.”

The inclement weather — with lightning intermittently streaking through the sky — made it hard to know exactly why the yacht sank. Col. Attilio Di Diodato, director of the Italian Air Force’s Center for Aerospace Meteorology and Climatology, said the agency had registered intense lightning activity and strong gusts of wind in the area at the time the boat sank.

The Bayesian had one of the tallest aluminum masts in the world, according to its builder, Perini Navi. “Having a tall aluminum mast would not make it the safest port to be in case of a storm,” said Andrea Ratti, associate professor of nautical design and architecture technology the Politecnico di Milano. The type of intensity unleashed by a violent lightning storm “could have created a significant shock wave,” he added.

He, too, cautioned that “a lot of questions will remain until we have other elements at our disposal.”

Modern yachts are built to withstand meteorological events of reasonable intensity, and all international naval registers suggest that new ships be designed for higher waves and more frequent and extreme weather events.

But “this seems a case of an unreasonable extreme event,” said Emilio Fortunato Campana, an expert in Naval Hydrodynamics at Italy’s National Research Council. “In that case, no ship is 100 percent safe,” he added. “I think the Titanic showed that nothing is unsinkable.”

A luxury superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily early Monday morning after the boat was reportedly caught in the middle of an unexpected and violent storm. The 183-foot boat, named the Bayesian, is estimated to be worth around $18 million .

At least one person was killed during the incident, with six others still missing, the Italian coast guard reported. Fifteen people were rescued when the yacht sank around 5 a.m. local time (11 p.m. ET). American, British and Canadian citizens are among those who remain missing.

The storm that caused the yacht to sink was a freak occurrence, with Salvo Cocina, the head of Sicily’s civil protection agency, telling reporters those on board were “in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

What happened?

The Bayesian capsized while about half a mile off the coast of Porticello, a small fishing village. There were 22 people on board — 12 passengers and 10 crew members.

According to the BBC , a heavy storm hit the coast of Sicily and created waterspouts , which are tornadoes that form over water. The waterspout winds were so powerful that they broke the boat’s mast in half, causing the ship, which was anchored, to lose its balance and sink.

The crew on a Dutch-flagged vessel nearby noticed the yacht had disappeared and saw flares being set off in the sea. They went to help survivors before the Italian coast guard could arrive.

One British passenger, Charlotte Golunski, told reporters she kept her 1-year-old daughter alive by holding her up above the water until they got on a lifeboat.

What to know about the Bayesian

Charter sites list the yacht’s weekly rent as $215,000, the Associated Press reported .

Boat International , a superyacht and luxury yacht guide, reported that the Bayesian had the tallest aluminum mast in the world at over 240 feet, making it one of the 50 largest sailing yachts in the world.

The latest as of Tuesday afternoon

Six passengers remained missing on Tuesday afternoon, including tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, sometimes referred to as the “British Bill Gates.” Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter is also among those missing, while his wife, Angela Bacares, was one of the 15 people saved.

Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer, prominent American lawyer Chris Morvillo and their wives are also missing.

The City Council of Bagheria said in a statement that seven adults were taken to the emergency room following the rescue but “it seems that none are in serious conditions.”

The coast guard said that four patrol boats have been deployed along with a helicopter and a team of divers to complete the search and rescue mission. A specialized caving search and rescue team was also flown in from Rome.

The U.K.’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch also plans to send a team of four investigators to make a preliminary assessment of why the Bayesian sank and why people were still on board.

Who is Mike Lynch?

Lynch, 59, founded the software firm Autonomy and recently faced a legal battle with U.S.-based Hewlett-Packard after the tech company accused him of inflating Autonomy’s value in an $11 billion sale in 2011.

Lynch was acquitted of multiple fraud charges in June after a three-month trial, avoiding a potential 20-year jail sentence.

PORTICELLO, Sicily — Rescue teams and divers were returning to the site of a storm-sunken superyacht off Sicily on Tuesday to search for six people, including British tech magnate Mike Lynch, who are believed to be still trapped in the hull, 50 meters (164 feet) underwater.

Divers were loading a rescue dinghy at the port of Porticello, near Palermo, after a first search Monday ended unsuccessfully. Fire rescue crews reported that divers were unable to access the below-deck cabins because they were blocked by debris that had shifted during the violent storm that toppled the luxury sailboat early Monday.

“Access was limited to the bridge, due to the difficulty represented by the presence of furnishings obstructing the divers’ passage,” the fire crews said in a statement.

The search was made particularly difficult because the ship was resting on the seabed at a depth of 50 meters, which limits the amount of time divers can be underwater, said fire rescue spokesperson Luca Cari. As a result, the search is expected to take time, he told The Associated Press early Tuesday.

The 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian luxury yacht had been moored about a half-mile off Ponticello when a storm rolled in around 4 a.m. Monday. Civil protection officials said they believed the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, which had passed over the area.

Fifteen of the Bayesian’s 22 passengers and crew managed to escape, first onto a lifeboat and then by a nearby sailboat, the Sir Robert Baden Powell, that had also been moored offshore to ride out the storm, Karsten Borner, the captain of the Baden Powell, told reporters at the scene.

One body, belonging to the Bayesian’s chef, was recovered nearby.

Among those missing was Lynch , who was once hailed as Britain’s king of technology. He was cleared in June of fraud and conspiracy charges in a U.S. federal trial related to Hewlett Packard’s $11 billion takeover of his company, Autonomy Corp. His wife, Angela Bacares, survived.

The vacation appeared to be something of a celebration after Lynch's acquittal, with guests including some of the people who had stood by Lynch throughout the ordeal. Among those unaccounted for, according to the civil protection agency, were one of Lynch’s U.S. lawyers, Christopher Morvillo of Clifford Chance, and Morvillo’s wife. Also among the missing was Jonathan Bloomer, the former head of the Autonomy audit committee who testified at Lynch’s trial, and his wife.

Among the survivors was Charlotte Golunski, who said she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, Italian news agency ANSA reported. The father, identified by ANSA as James Emslie, also survived.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, was carrying 12 passengers and 10 crew. According to online charter companies, it has been available for charter for 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week and is notable for its massive 75-meter tall aluminum mast, one of the tallest in the world.

What we know about storm conditions related to the Sicily yacht sinking

If the storm that sank a yacht in Sicily was a waterspout, then it was probably a tornadic waterspout, which are often as strong as tornadoes over land.

A “violent storm” sank a luxury yacht off the northern coast of Sicily early Monday, according to local authorities, who said one person was dead and six people were missing. Divers had resumed searching for survivors on Tuesday, a day after the 183-foot yacht named Bayesian sank more than 160 feet below the surface of the Mediterranean Sea.

Fifteen out of 22 people aboard were rescued. Among the missing is British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch . Lynch’s wife was among those rescued, while his daughter remains missing.

The storm’s winds might have broken the boat’s aluminum mast, reportedly one of the world’s largest at 246 feet. It’s not clear exactly what type of storm struck the Bayesian, but weather data suggests it was probably a tornadic waterspout or severe thunderstorm.

What kind of storm appeared to sink the yacht?

Italian civil protection officials believe the yacht was hit by a waterspout, the Associated Press reported , which is defined as a tornado over water. Pieter Groenemeijer, director of the European Severe Storms Laboratory, said on X that it could have been a waterspout or a downburst, which is a strong gust of wind that comes from a thunderstorm.

No photographs or eyewitness accounts of the storm have emerged. Tornadoes and downbursts can look similar even during the light of day, let alone in the dark of night when the Bayesian was capsized.

What’s the difference between a tornado and a downburst?

A tornado is a narrow column of violently rotating cloud and wind that stretches from the base of a thunderstorm down to the ground, whereas a downburst comes directly from a thunderstorm that produces strong downward winds that hit the ground and spread out in all directions.

Both the rotating winds of tornadoes and the straight-line winds of downbursts can generate damaging wind gusts over 100 mph.

If the storm was a waterspout, then it was probably a tornadic waterspout, which are often as strong as tornadoes over land. There are also “fair weather” waterspouts, which don’t come from thunderstorms, but rather “develop at the surface of the water and … are usually small, relatively brief, and less dangerous,” according to the National Weather Service .

What were the conditions at the time of the sinking?

Weather model forecasts showed there would have been warm and unstable air overhead at the time of the storm, with low pressure centered to the northwest of Sicily. Such a weather pattern is conducive to the development of storms capable of producing damaging winds.

Satellite imagery and lightning data indicate there was an intense storm off the Sicily coast that was producing copious lightning at the time of the wreck. Private weather firm Meteologix said that “no weather radar data was available of the region.” News reports don’t indicate whether radar was available aboard the yacht.

In response to the sinking, journalist Andrew Revkin described his experience with a storm while at the helm of a 60-foot sailboat in 1980.

Revkin added, “it still horrifies me how serene things were for those aboard the sv Bayesian just hours before she sank in an insane squall” and posted what appears to be a photograph of the vessel in calm waters.

Did climate change play a role?

This particular storm can’t be attributed directly to climate change. But it did occur against a backdrop of record-warm ocean temperatures, which can increase the energy available to storms.

Mediterranean Sea waters are currently the hottest on record, according to London-based meteorologist Scott Duncan , who noted that “18 out of the 20 hottest days for the Mediterranean sea surface temperature have been observed in the last 13 months alone.”

British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer are presumed dead along with four others who were aboard a luxury superyacht that sank off the coast of Italy on Monday morning, according to a report.

Lynch and Bloomer were among the six people still missing, which include Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter Hannah, Bloomer’s wife Neda, and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Judy, Italian coast guard officials said on Tuesday, per the Wall Street Journal.

The Bayesian, a 184-foot British-flagged yacht, was moored about a half-mile offshore when a storm rolled in before 4 a.m. Monday. Civil protection officials said they believed the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly.

Grainy film from closed-circuit cameras from shore, broadcast on the website of the Giornale di Sicilia, showed the illuminated 246-foot mast of the Bayesian weathering the storm and then disappear over the course of a minute.

Powerful Attorney With CT Roots, Wife Missing After Luxury Yacht Capsizes In Italy: Reports

A New York attorney with Connecticut roots and his wife are among seven people missing after the yacht they were on capsized early this week in Italy, according to multiple reports.

Christopher Morvillo, age 59, who attended the Canterbury School in Litchfield County, Connecticut, and later Fordham University, along with his wife, Neda Morvillo, age 57, are among six people who are unaccounted after the 184-foot luxury yacht overturned off the coast of Sicily on Monday morning, Aug. 19, according to ABC 7.

Twenty-two people were on board the ship at the time of the incident near Palermo, according to the report.

The couple's bodies may still be on the boat, which rescuers have had a difficult time reaching, ABC 7 reports.

According to the Financial Times , the yacht is owned by a client of Morvillo's, Mike Lynch.

Morvillo served as an assistant US Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 1999 to 2005, having helped in the criminal investigation stemming from the 9/11 attacks, according to his bio on his firm's website.

Two months ago, Morvillo wrote a post on LinkedIn following an exoneration in a client. After congratulating multiple colleagues and team members, Morvillo thanks his family.

"And, finally, a huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo. None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home," said Morvillo, closing on an eerie note.

12 arrested in Santa Clara mail theft and fraud ring

A dozen people were arrested in Santa Clara in a mail theft perpetrated by a fraud ring earlier this month, according to police.

The Santa Clara Police Department said that around 4:10 a.m. on Aug. 5, its officers were alerted to a reported mail theft in the 1900 block of Hillebrant Place in Santa Clara. Investigators later found surveillance footage of the crime which showed someone fleeing the scene in a black Lexus.

Detectives found and surveilled the vehicle, police said. Patrol officers then pulled it over and detained its driver.

"The investigation revealed the suspect was associated with a major fraud ring specializing in mail theft, operating in Santa Clara County. (Burglary Arson Major-Fraud) detectives identified two fraudulently rented apartments where the suspects conducted their operation. Detectives obtained arrest warrants and search warrants for the suspects and their locations to disrupt and dismantle the operation," police said.

Then on Wednesday morning, detectives served search warrants in Santa Clara and San Jose. Nine suspects were nabbed. Detectives then executed another search warrant in the 500 block of Moreland Avenue at the Moreland Apartment complex in Santa Clara, where three suspects were also detained.

"A search of the apartment revealed large amounts of stolen mail, U.S. Postal mail keys, a U.S. Postal mail uniform, U.S. Postal mail locks, narcotics packaged for sales, electronic gambling machines, narcotics paraphernalia, body armor, notebooks containing Personal Identifying Information (PII), and suspected stolen property. The suspected stolen property included identification cards, checkbooks, passports, license plates, credit cards, and documents belonging to dozens of victims. All 12 suspects were arrested for outstanding felony warrants and other charges related to the possession of stolen property, narcotics, fraud, and resisting arrest," police said.

The suspects were identified as Ngoai Nguyen, 42; Melizza Hufana, 43; Raquel Tendencia, 34; Lim Vo, 30; Sean Finn, 43; Paolo Bartido, 39; Glenn Nguyen, 32; Vu Thi, 38; Dary Pech, 41; Christie Entac, 33; Eun Chong, 34; and Tiffany Terada, 42.

Both hotel and yacht share the same name: The Wellesley . They also share a Roaring 20s design and feel: The cigar cabinet mirrors the selection in the hotel, as do the Hermès toiletries in the marbled Art Deco bathrooms. ‘Milos at Sea,’ Xenodocheio Milos, Greece

First came the restaurant: Montreal’s Estiatorio Milos  in 1976 (followed by New York, Athens, Las Vegas, Miami, London, and another New York address). Then came the hotel: Xenodocheio Milos in Athens in 2022, an opening that heralded a return to the roots of chef Costas Spiliadis. Now comes the yacht: Milos at Sea , the 113-foot Codecasa motoryacht that brings Spiliadis’s culinary philosophy to the water. On weekly charters for groups of up to 10 in the Greek Islands, local cuisine, and culture come to the fore, as does a carefully curated menu from this celebrity chef’s personal chef. Low season from $48,000 per week.

‘Major Affair,’ Anantara Layan Residences, Thailand

The Man with the Golden Gun was the last James Bond novel Ian Fleming penned, but the story lives on at Anantara Layan Residences in Thailand. As part of its “Golden Gun” experience, guests fly from Bangkok to Phuket by private jet before transferring to a chauffeur-driven limo for the final stretch to the resort. Martinis (shaken, not stirred, of course) are offered up by a private butler on arrival, as is the actual golden gun from the 1974 Bond movie of the same name. It’s all designed to whet your appetite for the main course: a cruise around Phang Nga Bay, where the movie was filmed, on board the property’s sleek Sunseeker 90 Major Affair. If 007 isn’t to your taste, the yacht is available to guests for day charters and comes fully stocked with wakeboards, inflatables, and water skis to recreate your own superhero adventure. $10,000 for 8 hours.

‘Bella,’ Hurawalhi Maldives & Kudadoo Maldives Private Island, Maldives

Plenty of yachts flock to Hurawalhi Maldives to drop guests at 5:8 Undersea Restaurant, an all-glass fine-dining room resting on the seafloor. But only one calls the resort home: Bella , a Princess F55 Flybridge shared between Hurawalhi and Kudadoo Maldives Private Island, the ultra-luxe sister resort next door. Captain Nasri hails from the Indian Ocean nation and, when the captain and crew aren’t ferrying guests on sunset trips to the restaurant, they are showing them the best local dive sites, searching for manta rays, or setting up desert-island picnics on day excursions. $3,000 for 2 hours.

‘Revolution,’ Puente Romano Beach Resort, Spain

Puente Romano Beach Resort in Marbella already has a Six Senses spa and a two-star Michelin restaurant, so the arrival of a sleek sailing yacht to enhance the guest experience was the logical next step. Built in 1990 and restored in 2020, Revolution is a 53-foot vessel fully crewed for half- and full-day excursions off the southern Spanish coast. Guests can learn sailing and navigation basics or make a splash with paddleboards in the water while catching glimpses of the Rock of Gibraltar or Africa’s coastline. “For guests, it is a wonderful way to experience the area in the intimacy of their own private space,” says general manager Gonzalo Rodriquez. $2,000 for 4 hours.

‘Star of the Sea,’ Bequia Beach Hotel, St. Vincent and the Grenadines

Bengt Mortstedt stumbled upon Bequia, a castaway island in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, by chance as he explored the Caribbean on his sailing ketch in the early 1990s. He never left, founding the Bequia Beach Hotel. From just 10 rooms and a rum shack on the beach, the hotel has grown into the definition of barefoot luxury, offering suites and private villas across 10 waterfront acres. The sailing yacht has also been traded up for a classic 114-foot Benetti motoryacht, Star of the Sea . Up to 12 guests can soak up the yacht’s vintage styling on day trips or multi-day charters to chic neighboring islands Mustique and Canouan.

‘Escape,’ W Maldives, Maldives

From its home base, the heart-shaped W Maldives resort island, Escape roams the crystalline waters of the North Ari Atoll. Styled like a traditional two-masted gullet, the 78-foot motorsailor first set sail in the Indian Ocean in 2022. Leisurely top speeds of eight knots keep the pace perfect for snorkeling and diving day trips, relaxed afternoons resting on the expansive sundeck, or even a romantic proposal. Two cabins make longer sailings a reality. Keeping to the W brand, the vessel comes equipped with a Bose sound system, flat-screen TVs and W’s signature beds and amenities. Overnight for $3,800

‘Vision,’ Rosewood Little Dix Bay, British Virgin Islands

The island hideaway built by Laurance Rockefeller in the 1960s, Little Dix Bay in Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands, has hosted royalty and celebrities over the years. Now part of the Rosewood Hotels & Resorts family, the resort has lost none of its secluded allure with suites and villas concealed from prying eyes by a canopy of breezy palm trees. Vision is its 57-foot catamaran, tailor-made for dipping in and out of the BVI’s aquamarine bays. On private day sailings for just four people, you can launch onboard toys that include seabobs, kayaks, and inflatables. Larger groups can opt for an extended stay: Vision can sleep up to eight guests in four en-suite cabins. $1,500 for a half-day sail.

Private Paradise Villa, Cozumel, Mexico

Private Paradise Villa in Cozumel, with its luxury villas, 25-foot waterfalls, four theaters, and heated pools, not to mention butlers and private chefs, does not have its own yacht. But it does offer something more exceptional on the sailing catamaran that transports guests into the gin-clear waters of the adjoining Marine Park. As guests soak in the water after a snorkel or swim, a butler carries a tray of drinks and refreshments from the boat, displaying the ultimate in customized service. The resort is family-friendly, with resident actors, singers, and entertainers adding to the fun vibe, but it’s also secluded enough to allow guests the privacy that is part of the resort’s name.

Four Seasons ‘Explorer,’ Palau

The 11-passenger Four Seasons Explorer , which was recently based in the Maldives between two resorts, will move next month to the even more pristine island nation of Palau, with 340 volcanic and coral islands. Rather than being connected to a Four Seasons resort, Explorer is the resort, offering spa services on board, or kayaking, paddle-boarding and surfing, and of course, exceptional cuisine. It’s also a Five-Star PADI dive center that offers exceptional diving and snorkeling. Sites like German Channel offer manta rays and reef shark as well as healthy coral reefs, while the Peleliu Wall has caves and canyons, with marine life like pygmy killer whales and silvertip sharks. Onland activities like visiting cave paintings or learning traditional Palauan music are part of the charter. Explorer is available on a per-stateroom basis, or can be chartered whole.

‘Marina di Principe,’ Principe Forte dei Marmi, Italy

From his rooftop restaurant Lux Lucis, atop the Hotel Principe Forte dei Marmi , chef Valentino Cassanelli’s Michelin-starred Italian fare comes with a side of sweeping Tyrrhenian Sea views. Cassanelli also plates up his cuisine at sea, with a carefully prepared menu designed for guests who charter the five-star hotel’s yacht, Marina di Principe , for the day. As the 78-foot Mazarin yacht speeds between the Tuscan coast and Portofino or Cinque Terre, you can feast on dishes such as Risotto with fresh sea urchins and Tuscan black truffle, and Grilled turbot with bbq aubergine and rhubarb. Splash some extra cash and Cassanelli can even come onboard to cook for you. From $4,300 per day.

La Guérite Restaurant, Cannes, France

La Guérite Cannes on the island of Sainte-Marguerite is like a private sanctuary that provides a nice respite from the bustling city on the French Riviera. Diners can choose to look back at Cannes or out to the pristine blue Med. Accessible only by boat, La Guerite boasts one of the most authentic Mediterranean menus in the region, courtesy of Greek chef Yiannis Kioroglou. Chargrilled seafood, aromatic meats, and an impressive wine cellar are complemented by musicians who serenade diners. As a bonus, its private beach club offers true waterfront solitude.

Crime and Public Safety

Detectives seized stolen mail, usps keys and notebooks containing personal identifying information.

The criminal probe started on Aug. 5 when officers went to the 1900 block of Hillebrant Place for a mail theft investigation, the Santa Clara Police Department said Monday.

Surveillance footage showed a suspect leaving the scene in a Lexus. Detectives later stopped and identified the suspect, who was linked to a “major fraud ring specializing in mail theft,” according to police.

After identifying two apartments related to the suspected ring, detectives served two search warrants on Aug. 14 in Santa Clara and San Jose. Nine suspects were detained in San Jose and three were detained in Santa Clara.

A search of an apartment in the 500 block of Moreland Avenue in Santa Clara turned up stolen mail, USPS keys, USPS locks and a USPS uniform, according to police.

Detectives also found drugs packaged for sale, body armor, notebooks containing personal identifying information, electronic gambling machines and other stolen property, police said.

The stolen property included IDs, passports, checkbooks, credit cards and license plates.

The suspects were arrested for outstanding warrants and other charges related to the possession of stolen property, drugs, fraud and resisting arrest, according to police.
