Transatlantic Race 2025

The start date for the next edition of sailing's greatest Corinthian challenge has been set. The Transatlantic Race 2025 will depart Newport, RI on Wednesday, June 18, 2025 headed for the southern coast of England. A virtual gate off Lizard Point will enable teams to challenge the course record for this historic passage, but the official finish will take place off the Royal Yacht Squadron's waterfront castle in Cowes, England.

The Transatlantic Race 2025, is a direct descendant of the first great transatlantic ocean race, which started from New York Harbor on December 11, 1866. In the years since, this course has been plied with less frequency than other, shorter offshore race tracks; the 2025 edition will be just the 32nd transatlantic race organized by the New York Yacht Club. Because of that, and the fact that a race from the United States to Europe (or the return) is virtually guaranteed at least one significant storm, simply finishing a transatlantic race remains one of sailing's most coveted accomplishments.

The Organizing Authority of the TR2025 is comprised of the New York Yacht Club Regatta Association, Inc and the Royal Ocean Racing Club. Together with the support of their partners, the Royal Yacht Squadron and Storm Trysail Club, these renowned sailing established will ensure this edition of the Transatlantic Race will be a memorable one.

2024 RORC Transatlantic Race – 24 Teams and Counting

Calero Marinas – Marina Lanzarote, Arrecife, Canary Islands to Camper & Nicholsons Port Louis Marina, Grenada

The Royal Ocean Racing Club’s 10th anniversary edition of the RORC Transatlantic Race will start from Lanzarote on the 7th January 2024. Supported by Calero Marinas and the International Maxi Association, along with Yacht Club de France. The RORC fleet will set off from Marina Lanzarote to race across the Atlantic Ocean, bound for Camper & Nicholsons Port Louis Marina in Grenada, West Indies.

Two months before the start of the RORC Transatlantic Race, 24 teams from 10 countries have responded to the challenge for the 3,000-mile oceanic race. An estimated six Maxi yachts will be vying for the overall win under IRC, as well as the IMA Transatlantic Trophy awarded to the first Maxi yacht to complete the race. Six Multihulls are expected in the MOCRA class, including an unprecedented four 70ft trimarans vying for Multihull Line Honours.

2024 Entries & Expressions of Interest (LINK)  https://rorctransatlantic.rorc.org/entri es

Farr 100 Leopard 3 (MON), skippered by Chris Sherlock is expected to line up against five former round the world racing yachts in IRC Super Zero. Roy P. Disney’s Pyewacket 70 (USA) is making its race debut and is the biggest threat to Leopard. The big boat entries feature all-carbon boats with canting keels; two Volvo 70 entries from Johannes Schwarz in Ocean Breeze (NED) and Green Dragon (AUT). Jens Lindner’s Volvo 70 HYPR (ESP), and Farr 65 Sisi (AUT), skippered by Gerwin Jansen, are ramping up for the battle.

In 2016, Leopard 3 with Mike Slade at the helm, won the IMA Transatlantic Trophy. Now under new ownership, she has undergone a major refit, including a new rig. Leopard 3 was in fine form in October, taking Monohull Line Honours in the 2023 Rolex Middle Sea Race. After the RORC Transatlantic Race, Leopard 3 plans to take part in their sixth RORC Caribbean 600, having taken Line Honours in two editions and will also compete in the RORC Nelson’s Cup Series.

“The new owners have been involved with the boat for three years and they are very analytical and want the best out of the boat,” explained skipper, Chris Sherlock. “After the major refit and several 600-milers, the owners are ready to enjoy a longer race with the Leopard crew. The RORC Transatlantic is a fantastic race track, especially as in modern times the dynamic has changed as the boats have got so much faster. Now it is rare to go the traditional southern route, often you are pushing north to get into more breeze to go faster.”

For the 2024 RORC Transatlantic Race, the turbo-charged Leopard 3 will have one eye on the Monohull Race Record set by Comanche in 2022 of 07 Days 22 hrs 01 min 04 secs at an average speed of 16 knots.

“I am not saying Leopard is quicker than Comanche, but in its previous heavier configuration, Leopard averaged over 18 knots for a very similar course (Tenerife – Virgin Gorda) in the 2012 IMA Transatlantic Race. Breaking race records is heavily dependent on the weather at the given time of the race,” continued Chris Sherlock. “Leopard is now beautifully set up. If we get relatively flat water and 25 knots from the right direction, we could break the record for the RORC Transatlantic Race, that is what we are going to try to do.”

For Multihull Line Honours and potentially a new RORC Transatlantic Race Record, four boats are in contention. Giovanni Soldini’s Maserati Multi70 (ITA) set the Race Record last year, blasting across the Atlantic in 05 days 05 hrs 46 mins 26 secs. Maserati has just taken Line Honours in the Hong Kong – Vietnam Race. Sailing the boat via Cape Town, Maserati is expected in Lanzarote in December to prepare and then defend last year’s win. Stiff opposition is expected from three modified MOD70s; Erik Maris’ Zoulou (FRA), Jason Carroll’s Argo (USA), and Alexia Barrier’s Limosa (FRA).

At least 18 boats are expected to be racing under IRC for the overall win and the RORC Transatlantic Race Trophy. The latest entries include Dan Segalowicz’s Solaris 55 Team 42 (FRA), Club Swan 50 Pimu (MON) owned by Mikhail Malamud and skippered by Collin Mulry. Sebastian Dziwisch’s JPK 38 Orinoco (GER) will join Gavin Howe’s Sun Fast 3600 Tigris (GBR) in IRC Two-Handed. Richard Fromentin’s JPK 1180 Cocody (FRA) will have a match race with Ed Bell’s JPK 1180 Dawn Treader (GBR). Tom Kneen’s JPK 1180 Sunrise (GBR) is also available for charter with LV Yachting.

Racing across the Atlantic Ocean is on the bucket list of any offshore sailor. Predominantly fast downwind surfing, both day and night, and with the added thrill of serious competition both on the water and after IRC time correction.

Comanche sets new Transatlantic Race record

Related articles, superyacht directory.

The 30.48 metre sailing yacht Comanche has set a new monohull race record after taking Monohull Line Honours in the 2022 RORC Transatlantic Race.

Skippered by Mitch Booth, Comanche and its crew completed the 3,000 nautical mile race from Lanzarote to Grenada in seven days, 22 hours, 1 minute and 4 seconds (that's two days quicker than the previous record holder).

Constructed in carbon fibre by American builder Hodgdon to a design by VPLP/Verdier Maxi, the yacht was delivered in 2014 after being commissioned by software mogul Jim Clark.

This is not the first time Comanche has tasted success – since its launch the yacht has set several speed records, most notably sailing from New York’s Ambrose Lighthouse to the UK’s Lizard Point in five and a half days in 2016.

The sailing yacht also finished in second place during the 2014 Sydney Hobart race and broke a 24-hour record in the 2015 Transatlantic Race after covering 618 nautical miles in one day.

Described as a “Laser dinghy or 49er morphed with rocket ship” by BOAT’ International's own Marilyn Mower , Comanche ’s defining feature is its comparatively wide 7.6 metre beam which helps save weight, in turn increasing its speed.

Other notable features include its rig which rises 47 metres above the water and a solid stainless steel keel.

Comanche is the largest yacht entered in the 2022 RORC Transatlantic Race and the team must now wait until the remaining competitors have crossed the finish line, to see if any of the 21 teams performing can eclipse their corrected time.

2024 rorc transatlantic race: international fleet ready in lanzarote.

The Royal Ocean Racing Club starts the racing season for 2024 with the 10th anniversary edition of the RORC Transatlantic Race, starting from Lanzarote on the 7th January 2024.

The race is supported by Calero Marinas, the International Maxi Association, and the Yacht Club de France.

The RORC fleet will set off from Marina Lanzarote to race 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean, bound for Camper & Nicholsons Port Louis Marina in Grenada, West Indies.

The RORC Race Team have set up in Marina Lanzarote before the start, carrying out safety inspections and assisting all the teams with their preparations for the race.

“The RORC Transatlantic Race is a World Sailing Offshore Special Regulations Category One Race,” commented RORC Racing Manager Steve Cole. “All of the competing boats and crew will need to comply with the requirements of the race and the RORC Race Team will carry out pre-race inspections. Safety at sea always comes first in any RORC Race; we know the calibre of this fleet and we are not expecting any big issues. However, the checklists and the dialogue with the teams is a great way to pinpoint any matters that need to be addressed, and also gives the RORC valuable feedback about Special Regulations for the future.”

The official entry list boasts 22 teams flying the flags of eight different nations, crewed by sailors from 20 different countries. France has the most admissions with eight boats and 43 French nationals racing in the RORC fleet. Entries are also in from Austria, Great Britain, Germany, Monaco, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United States of America.

Four Multihulls will be in contention for race honours with three MOD70s as favourites for Multihull Line Honours. Erik Maris’ Zoulou (FRA), Jason Carroll’s Argo (USA), and Alexia Barrier’s Limosa (FRA) will fight for the accolade of being the first to finish the race. The trio of MOD70s will have one eye on the Multihull Race Record of 05 days 05 hrs 46 mins 26 secs, set last year by Giovanni Soldini’s Maserati Multi70 (ITA). Adrian Keller’s Nigel Irens-designed 84ft catamaran Allegra (SUI) is the largest multihull in the race and favourite for the MOCRA Class after time correction. Allegra has won the MOCRA Class for the last two editions of the Rolex Fastnet Race, and twice for the RORC Caribbean 600.

Six Maxi yachts will be vying for the overall win under IRC and the IMA Transatlantic Trophy for the first Maxi to finish the race. The Farr 100 Leopard 3 (MON), skippered by Chris Sherlock is the favourite to take Monohull Line Honours. Given the right conditions, Leopard 3 can threaten the Monohull Race Record set by Comanche in 2022 of 07 Days 22 hrs 01 min 04. Returning to the race is Jean-Pierre Dreau’s Mylius 60 Lady First III (FRA) which is the holder of the Yacht Club de France Trophy. The Bill Trip designed Swan 78 Valkyrie (FRA), sailed by Hubert Wargny will be competing for the second time, having completed the race in 2015 in an elapsed time of 12 days 07 hours 54 mins 03 secs.

Three round the world racing yachts will be competing this year, Johannes Schwarz has entered two former Volvo 70s. The Reichel Pugh 70 Green Dragon (NED) will be skippered by Benedikt Clauberg, and Johannes Schwarz will skipper his 70ft Farr design Ocean Breeze (NED). The trio of round the world racing yachts is completed by the VO65 Sisi (AUT) skippered by Oliver Kobale. All three boats have pro-am crews with a melting pot of sailors from all over the world.

From France and the USA, four yachts between 50 and 60ft (15.24m-18.29m) will be competing. The largest of this group is Bernard Giroux’s Cannes-based Solaris 55 TEAM 42 (FRA), co-skippered by Dan Segalowicz. The highest IRC rating of the group is Chris Sheehan’s PAC52 Warrior Won (USA), which was third overall in the 2023 Rolex Fastnet Race and won the 2022 RORC Caribbean 600. Collin Mulry will skipper Mikhail Malamud’s ClubSwan 50 Pimu (USA). Jean-Francois Guillon’s Solaris 50 Sea-Nergy (FRA) is from the Société Nautique de Marseille.

Two Class40s of similar performance will be racing to Grenada in a duel for the Class40 title. The Ker designed Concise 8 (FRA) is now under the ownership of Charles de Coquet, with Briton Guy Waites as co-skipper. Marc Lepesqueux’s Sensation Extreme (FRA) is designed by Sabrosa Rain and he has competed in two previous editions in an earlier design, including the very first race in 2014. Both Class40s intend to compete in the 2023 RORC Caribbean 600.

Six teams under 50ft (15.24m) will be racing, and while they have little or no chance of taking Line Honours, the overall winner of the RORC Transatlantic Race is decided by IRC time correction. All of the smaller entries have an equal chance of lifting the RORC Transatlantic Race Trophy and two boats under 50ft have won overall in the past. The largest of this group is Hanno Ziehm’s Marten 49 Moana (GER), the smallest is Gavin Howe’s Sun Fast 3600 Tigris (GBR), which will be raced double-handed with Maggie Adamson.

Andrew & Sam Hall’s Lombard 46 Pata Negra (GBR) won IRC One in 2023 and was second overall in 2019. New to the race is the J/122 Moana (NED) sailed by Michelle Witsenburg and Frans van Cappelle. The J/122 Moana was second in class in the 2023 Rolex Middle Sea Race. Two JPK 1180s will be in action; Ed Bell’s Dawn Treader (GBR) was the winner of IRC One for the 2023 RORC Season’s Points Championship, and the highly experienced Richard Fromentin will race his JPK 1180 Cocody (FRA).

A full programme of social events in Lanzarote starts on the 3rd of January with the Welcome Cocktail Party at Karma Rooftop, Marina Lanzarote. The 4th of January is the date for the ever popular Wine & Cheese Party held in Marina Lanzarote. A regular feature of the RORC Transatlantic Race is the Lanzarote Sailing School visit, where young local sailors can get on board the competing boats, experience the set-up of boats big and small, and meet the sailors. On the 5th of January, The RORC Transatlantic Race Gala Dinner will be held at the El Aljibe Del Obispo, a unique restaurant inside the Stratvus Winery located next to the Timanfaya National Park.

“The social events are an important part of the RORC Transatlantic Race experience; a great opportunity for all the sailors to meet each other before the race start and for the community in Lanzarote to benefit from the race,” commented RORC CEO Jeremy Wilton. “The Gala Dinner is generously provided by Calero Marinas and spectacular doesn’t do it justice; it’s the big get-together before the race, the food and the surroundings are always outstanding and every team is invited to have their team photograph before racing across the Atlantic. The Royal Ocean Racing Club wish all competitors a safe and fast RORC Transatlantic Race.”
